It was my distinct honor to serve as an assistant to Diane on the Regina softball team from 1986 through 2014. What I observed prior to 1986 when our daughter attended Regina (and since 2015) remained consistent with my tenure as one of Diane’s assistants; her quite measured leadership of the athletic program and in particular softball at Regina. But that doesn’t mean Diane was quiet during a game. Far from it, Diane was thoroughly engaged in every minute of every inning of every game. She was always shouting out encouragement and support to her players. The record speaks for itself. The coach stays positive; the team generally turns out on top. Diane always gave credit to her players for wins. There was never a hint in any news report about a softball win where she took credit based on a coaching strategy. Under her direction, Regina's softball teams were prepared and respected every opponent. Unlike the fun teasing cheer the players call out to Diane when an opposing batter hits a foul ball near her 3rd base coaching box (sometimes too close for anyone’s comfort); Diane you will NEVER ever have to, “get out of the way ‘Laff’ get out of the way” of anything relating to Regina High School. Humble in all respects…team oriented…a deep appreciation and belief in her players that is the Diane Laffey legacy that will always be in my heart and mind when I think back or hear her name in years to come. Thank you for trusting me and allowing me to be part of the Regina family. God bless you, Diane Laffey. You have been a credit to your parents and an example of God’s presence to the young women of the Regina High School Family.

Coach Laffey the 2019 softball season was so memorable for us! Division 1 State Champs with the win coming in extra innings with a walk-off. My favorite hashtag from all the posts was #Sendmethebill. Enough said. You are an inspiration to so many. Thank you for all the memories!

No matter a person's talent level, Coach Laffey treated each player with interest, patience, and kindness. When I came back to teach at Regina in my early 20s, one of the hardest things I had to learn was to address Coach Laffey as Diane!

Kathy Scharl Grozenski

I want to thank you for your friendship and mentoring during high school and beyond. You were the educator that I tried to model in my own teaching career. You impacted thousands of lives. CONGRATS! Enjoy!

I graduated from Regina 4 years before Ms. Laffey began her illustrious coaching career at Regina. However, over the last 50 years, I followed her career, her accolades, and her championships with true Regina pride. I congratulate her and wish her nothing but good things in her retirement!

Kathy Catania Bartus '66

During freshman year I was cut from softball! Thank you, Ms. Laffey!! Because of that “setback”, the Regina Golf Team was started!! Your dedication, motivation, and support for the young women of the Regina community over the years can never be replaced. I wish you all the best in your retirement!! Thank you for all you do!!

Congratulations Diane on a remarkable career! May you be blessed with all the joys of retirement! My first meeting with you was at school conferences when my daughter started at Regina as a transfer student and was taking your Phys Ed class. Her interests were much more academic than athletic, and you kindly put us at ease regarding her Phys Ed grade when you explained that if she showed up dressed and ready for gym class, she would succeed. Thank you for all the positive confidence and guidance you have provided for so many Regina students!

Terese Pauken

Thanks for making every student-athlete feel special!! No matter how many games or athletes you’ve coached we knew you cared like it was your first. Being involved with sports at Regina made my high school experience and that’s because of you!

Kayla Rice Lofay '10

First, let me say that it was an absolute honor to both play for you as a student athlete and coach with you as one of your many assistant coaches through the years. Additionally, I cherish the friendship we have grown over the last nearly 30 years. Honestly, I am not sure that I can narrow this down to ONE moment that is my favorite "Laffey Story". --I do have very fond memories of our conversations while you taped both of my ankles before every practice and game. It makes me chuckle every time I think of the methodical way you had to pack the equipment into your trunk each day. I enjoyed our "on a whim" vacation to Las Vegas that was planned literally overnight. I loved being part of the "bracelet club" that all started from some silly bracelets from Major Magics. I still can't believe the time I was given permission to leave school during Shakespeare class to get all of us National Coney Island. --And then there are some "adventures" that I still will not put in writing. But truly looking back, I think one of all the years I have known you, the fondest memory I have of you was when you pulled me out of Mrs. Brinker's class in May of my freshman year to ask me if I was willing to move up to the varsity team for playoffs. I still remember that moment like it was yesterday! That was a great honor for a young kid who had just picked up playing the sport a year before. Seriously, I couldn't even believe that the legend, Diane Laffey, knew who I was! THANK YOU for giving me a shot and for always believing in me. Furthermore, I would be remiss if I didn't thank you for always surrounding yourself with the most amazing assistant coaches. Not only were you influential in my life, but so too were Jack the Real Man, The Banana, and Minnie. You were all influential in my life during my formative years. No matter what, I always knew that you all had my back, supported me, and wanted the best for me. All of you were a big part of what made me want to be a teacher and a coach; I wanted to make sure that I had the opportunity to give to young kids, what all of you gave to me. With all of that said, I hope that your retirement is the best years ahead of you. May they be filled with good friends, good times, and good health for both you and Julie. Thank you for being the strong woman that you are, and thank you for your wisdom and kindness through the years.

Mugs (Lisa Muglia Kucinski '96)

Of course, our favorite memory is the ENTIRE 2019 softball season ending with a state championship win. But, Laff, you are so special to our family and we are so happy that Kiley was under your wing for her high school experience, on and off the field. You're a special person and congrats to a legacy that will forever be etched in our hearts! Good luck. And congrats!!!! Xo

Congratulations Coach Laffey on a career well lived and well loved! You have dedicated your life to helping our girls develop to their fullest potential on and off the field. There is no one more deserving than you to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. We are so grateful for all the time and energy you so freely gave to all your students, and especially to our daughter, Lauren! Enjoy your retirement, Coach! With love,

When Maria and I were reminiscing about our time at Regina and with Laffey, we found ourselves smiling and laughing most of the time! But in this reflection, we found the most important thing that Laffey provided us was a sense of belonging. More so than anyone event, we were grateful for the way she made us feel. For four years (and beyond), Laffey made us feel...important. She had been mentoring hundreds of Regina students for decades, and yet, each interaction made us feel, at that moment, that we were important to the team, to Regina, to her. That feeling, that our simple existence mattered, was more impactful than anything. Still, to this day when we see Diane Laffey, she reminds us that our time at Regina and with her was fun and meaningful in some way. This demonstration of love, of Christian living, has impacted the way we live our lives today. We try to make every interaction with the people we see each day our coworkers, families, friends, and strangers on the street feel that same way. If we should do anything in this life, we should strive to always make the people around us feel...important.

Like many, I met Miss Laffey when I was a teenager. What I didn’t know then was that I would have the honor of knowing her for decades to come and along the way she would become more than my guidance counselor and later my colleague as she transformed from Miss Laffey into Diane when I returned to RHS to teach. Most importantly, she became a treasured friend. What puts a smile on my face is thinking about the times that Miss Laffey would leave her teaching and coaching duties behind and enjoy some well deserved downtime. It was great to see her lean into a ketchup bottle that was transformed into an “air microphone” at the Flying Machine and sing along to the likes of “on the Road Again” by Willie Nelson. Or extending the fun on to a trip to Las Vegas where Diane and I along with fellow RHS colleagues Julie Aemisegger and Ann (Belloli) Starinsky bumped into Stevie Wonder and had a blast getting our picture with him. Ok, so it wasn’t really Stevie Wonder in the flesh, rather it was at Madame Tussauds wax museum but that didn’t stop us from finding a way to have a few laughs. Among the many things, I treasure about Diane is not only is she an iconic coach, fierce competitor, and educator but her commitment and dedication to her craft and the people she encounters are unparalleled. I’m pretty certain that this tribute ceremony is making Diane’s skin crawl with all of the attention that is being showered upon her due to the volume of humility that courses through her veins. Yet it’s because of her humility and incredible skill at bringing out the best in others that she has made a difference in the lives of so many. I am forever grateful to have been in one of those lives where she made a difference in. From helping me navigate some turbulent waters as a teenager, to being an outstanding role model and mentor as a teacher and coach as well as a friend, I extend my deepest thanks. Congratulations and best wishes as your next chapter begins. May you experience all of the joy and happiness that you so richly deserve.

Thank you, Miss Laffey, for the influence and impact you had on our daughter, Meghann (Class of 1999). Meg was fortunate to play softball, volleyball, and basketball all four years while at Regina. She learned so much from you not just about sports but about life as well. Her experience at Regina was so very enhanced by her participation in sports and your mentoring. We thank you so much and wish you all the best in your retirement. Regina and all its students were blessed to have you for all these years.

I am honored to have been coached by this wonderful lady. My fondest high school memory was that beautiful June day in 1989 when, after 3 1/2 hours and 17 innings, we won Regina’s first (of many) Softball State Championship led by a legend. I learned from the best….having been coached by Laff is something that I cherish and will always be thankful for. The memory of that thrilling victory will always bring a smile to my face, and it was her leadership that made it possible. It is a memory I will always cherish. She will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thank you, Laff, for giving me an amazing high school experience and for all of your dedication to thousands of female athletes. You deserve this night!! Forever grateful,

Stacy Kelly Charrette

It’s hard to pinpoint my favorite story with Laff after 4 years with her at Regina, but what sticks out to me most would have to be Laff calling me out for turning on the fans during basketball practice while she was in her office, my visits with Laff in her office where she let me raid her candy jar, and joking around with Laff during lunch. I wish nothing but the absolute best for one of the greatest people I have been blessed to know as she enters retirement! I’ll always be a call away to walk over and plow your snow for you, Laff :)

'90

I will always remember leaving my classes every day and coming to visit Laff just to hang out with her and steal all her candy, as well as planning a tandem bike ride with my sister, Laff, and me. Some days she limited me on my candy, but I know deep down she misses me bothering her haha. I wish her the absolute best and congratulate her on her career and retirement!

You amaze me! When I got the message about celebrating your 51 years of coaching, it stopped me in my tracks. In fact, I messaged Shawn immediately, and neither of us could believe it until we did the math and found it has been over 20 years since we wore Regina uniforms. It really feels like not long ago that she and I were posing together for our senior softball photo that we asked you to keep on your desk. We both still have a copy and hope you do too! (If not, we will recreate it :) )

Despite how much time has passed, I still feel like a kid at heart, and because of you, every time I play softball, basketball, or any sport, I try to play like a kid too. I leave it all on the field, court, or pitch (even when the average age of the opposing team is 7!) You taught me how to push hard (and take a charge), take calculated risks (stealing a base), and never give up.

I have carried the values that you taught me from sports into my work life too. I coach my teams with similar grit and try to strike that same balance of pushing for excellence and knowing when to celebrate a job well done. When something does not go to plan, I often think of the ‘99 softball season my senior season. We were so sure that we were going to win the state championship but got knocked out in the quarterfinal. We were so shocked and sad. You could have come down on us or showed your disappointment. Instead, you told us how proud you were to have coached us and lifted us up. We walked away with our heads held high and as a team.

Thank you for shaping the woman that I have become. The impact that you have created these 51 years has improved many lives. And the ripple effect of that has touched more people than I think any of us will ever truly know.

Congratulations and thank you, Meghann

Wishing you the best in your retirement! Hope it’s full of happiness and relaxation! I’ll never forget gym class, Sara Doyle and I would scream at 11:11 and make a wish to you every day at 11:11. You were always one of my favorites!

I am so appreciative of Ms. Laffey and all that she has done for me over the years!

The athletic program was one of my deciding factors in choosing to attend Regina, and going to high school here was one of the best decisions I have ever made. All of my family told me, "Go to Regina and play for a Legend (Ms. Laffey)”, and what an honor it was to play basketball for her and be a captain my senior year. I have so much respect for Ms. Laffey and what she has done for the entire school community during her time at Regina. She makes everyone around her a better person. I believe that her influence helped me to go down a path of coaching high school girls sports, and this eventually led me back here to Regina to coach the Varsity lacrosse team. I have loved being back around campus these past two years, and Ms. Laffey has been there to support me and the lacrosse program every step of the way. She even went out of her way to drive all the way out to Country Day last season for our playoff game (knowing that it wasn’t going to be a close game against the top team in the state!!). It meant so much to me to see her there after the game waiting to give me a hug and say she was proud of me and the season that we had. I will truly miss her good luck texts and our chats before or after our practices and games. It was always so fun to talk about life, high school sports, and everything in between! Ms. Laffey, you have truly been such an inspiration to me. I am blessed to have been able to call you not only my coach but my good friend! Wishing you nothing but the best and much health, happiness, and blessings. I am so excited for you and this next chapter in your life! Congratulations, Laff! Go Saddlelites!

Just wanted to say Congratulations on your retirement & the 52 years of coaching the game you love! While I was growing up and becoming a student athlete I always looked forward to playing Regina in Softball even though Regina always beat GP North, while we might of beat you once in my career while playing there. I always knew I wanted to be a softball coach after my career as an athlete was over. I saw many coaches while growing up and through my career but 1 always stood out and that was you Laff! I always had on my bucket list to coach at Regina Softball and you gave me that opportunity several years ago. It has been an amazing experience and I am so very blessed to be on your coaching staff! You have taught me so much and I am honored to be a part of this program and 2 STATE Championship teams. I always wanted to WIN a championship as a player, but that never happen but to get 2 Rings as a coach has been AWESOME. Thank you for that. You have touched so many people’s lives in so many ways, not only did you coach to teach about our sport but life lessons like leadership, teamwork, accountability, punctuality, and success. These lessons will stay with all of us for life. Thank you for being you and for all you do each & every day… Memories to be you LAFF!!”

I worked with Laffey from 2006 until 2010 when I was Regina's Advancement Director. Coming from outside the Regina family I needed introductions to the influential and helpful Saddlelites; Laffey did the job. Laff helped with every fundraising effort. She found volunteers, made calls, edited letters and papers, and spent time in the office offering encouragement. She joined fundraising committees and even helped draft a grant proposal to the Detroit Tiger's to rehab the softball fields at our new home in Warren. She is one of the kindest women I've ever known. We worked hard and we accomplished many things and most of all we supported one another and had fun. I wish you the best in retirement Diane. With every good wish for God's blessings.

Ms. Laffey was a great friend and teacher to all of her students! She stood behind each and every girl! She was always strong and kind. At one point my daughter was almost not able to be on sports teams because of parenting issues. She went above and beyond to help my daughter achieve her wish to play on Regina teams. My daughter has excelled in every area due to her excellent education and friendships, many of which she met through sports. Thank You for being there for all of our Daughters! We love you!

Despite all of her success, Coach Laffey was always humble and unassuming, deferring credit to the kids. She was such a great example for the young ladies. We were fortunate to have her coach all three of our girls. We hope Coach Laffey enjoys the next chapter of her journey and may God's blessings continue to shine upon her.

Ms. Laffey was one of the kindest and most thoughtful people I have ever had the pleasure to know. High school years can be difficult as well as transformative. When I didn't make the basketball team, my disappointment was evident. Ms. Laffey offered me the chance to be a student manager. She was a great teacher with high expectations. My family had one car and my mom didn't drive. When the bus route times changed, and I didn't have a way to get home, Ms. Laffey offered to drive me home after games and practices. Sometimes she even picked me up. We had great talks during those drives. I learned a lot about life and leadership from her. I carry those lessons with me to this day. Wishing you the very best in retirement and many blessings. I will always be grateful to you for what you did for me in high school that made a tremendous impact on the woman I became.

I remember crying after another defeat to Dominican and telling Sister Blandine n Sister Berchmans we need a coach like St. Anthony has. Oh, the excitement we felt when it was announced Ms. LAFFEY would be coming to Regina. Though she was with our class for just one year, she was impactful. Always willing to listen, show understanding, and truly cared. We did beat Dominican but lost championships in basketball and softball by one point and one run. Have a fun filled retirement. You deserve the best.

Congratulations on such an amazing career! You continue to set such a wonderful example for young women on how to be dedicated, passionate, and positive every day. I remember days when I was at RHS during the school morning working on something for the Fashion Show and then back at night for a volleyball match you were there the whole time! Your commitment is admirable and we sincerely hope you enjoy retirement!

When I was going to Regina, I naturally had gym class and did pretty good. We had to learn to do a backward somersault and played some basketball. It was a requirement but I did pretty well. I wish Miss Laffey good luck with her retirement.

Congratulations Miss Laffey! You have influenced the lives of so many young women and in more places than just sports. I'll never forget being lectured by Vice Principal Sister Hyacinth about registering my motorcycle on campus one morning. Even after proving I had my motorcycle endorsement, she still refused to approve the parking permit because it was not "lady like" LOL! And I'm not sure if she believed me when I answered that "yes" my parents not only knew I was riding it to school but that my Dad encouraged it. Shocker right? The truth of the matter was that we were down a vehicle in the family for that week and the only thing available to drive was a motorcycle, but Sister Hyacinth wasn't accepting that either. To my surprise, you pulled me out of 2nd hour and handed me my parking permit. I don't know how you pulled it off, but I will be forever grateful that you championed that cause for me. Hope you enjoy your retirement!

PS: I still have my motorcycle endorsement ;) Colleen Donahue '88

In 2015, the softball team started with a record of 3 11. We ended up winning Catholic League Championship and the State Championship. My time with Laffey during this season, all of the hard times and best times, will never fade in my memory.

I served as the basketball announcer for Regina Basketball for 1995 thru 1998 seasons (2 state final fours). I used a rather bombastic style that included nicknames for introductions, halftime gimmicks, and a taped parody song by a local band sung to Blue Suede Shoes; Don't step on my SADDLE SHOES. When I introduced Diane I paused and graveled out the following "Regina is coached, in her 25th year, by the LEGENDARY Diannnnne LAFFEY". Laff didn't like the legendary moniker as it was in direct conflict with her humble nature. She implored me not to use it but I had the mic! Around this time a local TV station was doing a story on her high school win milestone and sure enough, and much to her dismay, the reporter led the piece with the LEGENDARY Diane Laffey! I still remember the scowl she gave me. My wife and I along with '98 graduate Christa will be attending and I imagine your program plans are set. However, if you need someone to introduce Coach Laffey, one last time, don't hesitate to ask. P.S. Say hello to Tom Judd for me.

Just wanted to give a big shoutout and thank you to the greatest legend at our school: Laff. You will always be loved, missed, appreciated, and remembered by all girls at Regina High School. You've helped organized so much for every sport at the school. Not only great support, but GREAT encouragement by showing up at various sports game. You've always been our biggest cheerleader and we will all want to dedicate this to you and cheer you on toward the bigger things in your future. I wish you the best of luck with everything and remember you will always have a home here at Regina. Much love for you always, Laff.

Everyday when I walk into her office I know that she will be there to make me laugh or to listen to my stories. When I feel like I don’t know where to go I know her office will be there as my safe place. That is the kind of person she is, she makes others feel safe and welcomed. Love you Laff!

I think my favorite memories have been since after I graduated. I know there are so many alumni that Ms. Laff has impacted but she can make you feel like you're just as vital to the Regina community no matter what year you graduated. I also can't thank her enough for the career opportunities afforded to me throughout my professional life because "I knew Diane Laffey". Thank you, Ms. Laff!!! You are loved and you will be missed!! I hope you get to enjoy the retired life!!!

Love always,

I will always be grateful to Ms. Laffey for giving me the opportunity to be part of Regina high school basketball program. I remember trying buddy's pizza for the first time as part of a team celebration. The thrill of making it to the state championship game lives on and the support and positive energy of a dedicated coaching staff provided an example that I strive to emulate to this day. Thank you for your years of dedication to making lives of young women brighter and more prepared to face life's challenges. Wishing you all the best as you venture onward.

Little did I know that 43 years ago when I walked into the Regina gym for a basketball camp, I would meet someone that would leave a lasting imprint on my heart and guide me through life’s journey. Other than my parents/siblings, Diane is the person I credit for setting me on a pathway of success providing a front row seat to witness firsthand what a once in a lifetime teacher/coach and role model can do for young women. Diane’s superpower is that everything she does comes from a place of integrity and I’m honored to call her teacher, coach, mentor, and most importantly, my friend! Diane instills a sense of passion as she works to cultivate the skill sets her students/athletes need to develop. She always shows up, has ever present attention to the smallest detail, and holds unyielding expectations that students and staff work hard and give their best effort while having a bit of fun. Diane inspires people to be their best because we see her giving it her all each and every day. Diane is quick to take the heat for things when they go wrong (even when it wasn’t her responsibility) and give all credit to others for success. Diane has a true gift for making everyone feel like they are the most important conversation of the day! Over the years, there are countless memories that come to mind from the myriad lessons on the basketball court and softball field, to ‘no time for water’, construction signs, bulging veins, and cans on the front porch! Diane made it clear that the games/competitions are so much more than wins and losses we were being taught life lessons that would be part of the fabric of our lives moving forward! I was lucky to coach with Diane when I was in college and amazingly had an opportunity to teach with her since a science position opened up the year I graduated from college (to this day, I think Diane had a hand in that). Working with Diane as an ‘adult’ galvanized the lessons I learned as a teenager. This was a priceless gift as I watched someone navigate difficult situations with grace and honor while maintaining her laser focus on what was best for students, no matter the personal cost!

Diane, never doubt the lasting imprint you’ve left on the hearts and minds of colleagues, students, families, and the entire Regina community simply by being you. You’ve heard me say this before, but it needs to be said again - in SO many ways, YOU are Regina High School and should forever be celebrated for all that you’ve done, and ALL that you ARE! Thank you for being the shining light of how I want to always approach life - with love, compassion, and integrity! I’m forever grateful that you are my friend :)

Ms. Laff was my basketball and softball coach, and we won the State Championship in softball my senior year (2004). I have too many wonderful memories of Ms. Laff to list here, particularly because she has remained a dear friend for nearly 20 years since I graduated from Regina. There are many specific funny and special memories that I associate with Ms. Laff: She’s Slapping, The Posse, Who’s Jack Dailey, driving the old blue van to games, Rosie getting caught on the back lawn at the old school, Ms. Laff accidentally arbitrating a stupid teenage fight about bread between my mom and me, going to her house for Air Shows, her saving the Fall Out Shelter sign from the old school for me, skipping Spanish to come to the batting cages, her surprise birthday party at my parents’ house, seeing her at ND games…the list goes on and on. But I will perhaps most fondly remember the times spent before or after practice or games, just hanging out on the old stage in Harper Woods, where Ms. Laff took the time to know what was happening in each of our lives. She also was always willing to sign a slip for NHS hours where she had us vacuum the old workout room, or let us get out of study hall periods to use the batting cages upstairs in the old gym when we would get extra time to talk to her. She took a great interest in our college decisions and got to know our families and significant others (and now children). She is a treasure and has had a positive impact on each young woman who has been blessed to call her coach or teacher. God bless you, Ms. Laff. I can never express in words how much you mean to me and my family. Thank you for being such an important part of my life. I pray my daughters will have a role model and friend like you someday.

First, let me say that it was an absolute honor to both play for you as a student athlete, a coach with you as one of your many assistants coaches through the years, and also to build a friendship with you over the last nearly 30 years that I have cherished. I am not sure that I can narrow it down to one moment that is my favorite Laffey story. I do have fond memories of our conversations while you taped both of my ankles before every practice and game, I enjoyed our on a whim vacation to Las Vegas that was planned literally overnight, the bracelet club, the time I left school to get all of us National Coney Island, and many fun adventures that should NOT be published with this note. But looking back on my years, I think one of the fondest memories I have of you was when you pulled me out of Mrs. Brinker's class at the end of my freshman year to ask me if I was willing to move up to the varsity team for playoffs. That was a great honor for a young kid who had just picked up playing the sport a year before. Furthermore, I would be remiss if I didn't thank you for always surrounding yourself with the most amazing assistant coaches, as well. Not only you, but Jack the Real Man and Minnie had a profound influence on my life when much of my home life was a bit upside and confusing in my early high school years. No matter what, I always knew that the three of you had my back, supported me, and wanted the best for me. This was a big part of what made me want to be a teacher and a coach; I wanted to make sure that I had the opportunity to give back to young kids, but you had the ability to help navigate me through. I hope that in your retirement, you know that I will do the same for you. I am always happy to support you and have your back, and I am hoping for the best in the years ahead and that they are filled with happiness and good health for both you and Julie. You have been a role model for thousands of you women through the years, and I am happy to say that I certainly benefited from your mentorship, kind spirit, and moral compass, which always helped guide me in the right direction. There are undoubtedly some other great memories that I have had with you, but I am not sure they are the smartest thing to put in this book

It's hard to narrow down one story or memory in particular, but when I think back on my high school years, basketball and softball practices, games, and summer camps were by far the best moments and the highlights of my time at Regina. There's nothing better than playing sports you love with your best friends. I loved playing for Laffey and thank her for providing me with some of my most treasured memories. Best wishes!

I knew Miss Laffey Long before I came to Regina when I coached high school softball at Divine Child. We would always have competitive games against each other and she was a fantastic coach back in the 1980s and still is an awesome coach to this day. We always knew when we were going to play a Diane Laffey-coached team we would be facing a real challenge in every phase of the game. All of the coaches in the Catholic League respected her and knew she was the best at what she did. She was very supportive of me when I went to coach softball at the University of Detroit College. She even sent us some very good players that helped us win some championship games there. She is a true legend in the state and the high school sports world. She is dedicated, well respected, and a fierce competitor. I respect her a great deal for what she did in promoting women’s equality in sports in the state of Michigan. Many young women benefited a great deal from the hard work and effort that Miss Laffey put forth in support of women’s rights in the sports arena. I am thankful to have known her not only as a fellow coach but also as a Regina staff member for over 30 years. She will always be remembered in my heart and mind. She loved the girls at school deep down in her heart, she loved her teams, the school she represented, and that little blue Regina bus. A classic on and off the field and in the halls of Regina high school. Long live the Laffy legend.

Wishing you all the best in this next chapter of your life. Thank you for leading me and our 1989 softball team to the State title! 17 thrilling innings for us 17 teammates!

I cannot put together enough words to describe the impact that you had on my life. Your dedication and passion for the game of basketball or any sport were evident. You truly loved what you did for girls' athletics and made sure that whether we were in practice, in a game, or school we worked hard and represented ourselves with dignity. You set the bar high for me and I will always remember that! Congratulations on your well deserved retirement.

I can’t imagine the number of women that are stronger, kinder, more resilient, more focused, just better people because of their time with you. Congratulations on a life’s work well accomplished!

All memories of those three years playing for St. Anthony and then East Catholic are wonderful. I thank God He put you in the people you appreciate along the way.

The one word that describes Coach Laffey the best is gracious. Win or lose, she always demonstrated class. Diane always represented Regina High School in the highest manner. My daughter Rhoda and my granddaughter played basketball for Coach Laffey, one thing is for sure she always got the most out of her players. Her players loved her. No greater compliment to a Hall of Fame Coach. Well done Coach Laffey.

My one word description of Miss Laffey is “Admirable.” She embodies everything a great coach, mentor, and role model should be… and she was!

Rochelle Shelly Gillette Athletic Colleague Former Regina Staff Athletic Colleague

The one thing about Diane that stayed with me since it happened originated from the tragic death of Diane’s former student, player, and subsequent Regin JV coach in the mid nineties, Christina Comito.

As a Regina parent back then, I only knew Diane through my two daughters, Sarah and Katie, sophomore and freshman, respectively. From the beginning o knowing who she was, Diane always seemed to have a deadpan expression on her face. I say that because whether her teams were winning or losing, that wa my impression from the spectator side of things same expression, no emotion. You knew when she was mad only by her vocals from the sideline; when things were going good, it was the encouraging pat or hand slap was pleased. Even before my daughters attended Regina, see Diane watching CYO games at the Notre Dame gym ne Same look on her face.

I was at Ladywood High School after work on a day Regin arrived to watch some of the freshman games since I kne and friends of my JV daughter, Katie. JV players typically through the freshman game, as did their coach, Chris Com of the freshman game, Diane approached me in the stand the JV scorebook person if the freshman coach had to fill she arrived When Christina did not arrive by game time, scorer’s table and the freshman coach prepared to coach

At halftime of the JV game, Diane came to the scorer’s tab Christina was killed in a crash while heading to Regina to teammate. She requested I accompany her into the locker game, to avoid being in the locker room by herself when s about Christina She asked me not to say anything to anyo to get both teams into the locker room. So concerned was would slip out, Diane did not let the freshman coach on th happened. She wanted to tell the girls herself.

Some of the Varsity players had previously played under Christina, coming to love and respect her, as did that JV team. With both teams sitting around her in the locker room on benches and on the floor, Diane began relaying the tragic news The first words I remember out of her mouth as she faced the girls with tears in her eyes were, “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. I don’t know how I’m going to be able to say this, but I have to tell you that Christina was killed in a vehicle crash on her way to the game today”. Diane did her best to console and comfort those anguished, tearful girls, not only in the locker room that night, but for a long, long time after, as every game that follo ed that season became a reminder of the loss of Christina Comit rest of that season and beyond being a comforter and a co of those student athletes.

From then on, I knew that Diane was not some expressionles coach, but a true leader who loved the students she taught an the years, after becoming one of her Regina co workers, I bec more aware of how much Diane truly loved her work. She inv Regina students, wanting the best for them while continuing competitor. Without a doubt, she has more than done her par out of students with whom she has come in contact and they An expression sometimes used when a valuable employee dep one is irreplaceable.” In Diane Laffey’s case, she easily is a pe would view as the antithesis of that. Her moving on will be fe long time and her impact on people will be remembered by m legend should be.
