Mary Treder Lang President

Regina Alumnae,

It has been an amazing start of an academic school year for Regina High School's family. One of the largest student bodies in over ten years and we even had a waitlist for the incoming freshman class. This past year we have invested in the creation of a STEM Lab Workspace, upgraded classrooms with the latest technology, and invested into our facility infrastructure (including air conditioning in the classrooms and gymnasium). This would not have been possible without the support of YOU, our engaged alumnae. Thank you! Please continue to be our Regina Ambassadors and help us spread the exciting things happening here. Thank you for all your support!

Shelby Bobowski

Alumnae RelationsDirector

My Fellow Reginites,

To say I am excited to be back at Regina is an understatement. Like every student that has walked through these halls, whether you walked the Harper Woods halls, or the halls in Warren Regina is home. My family has a rich history of being Saddlelites, as my mother graduated in 1991, my sister in 2019, along with my youngest sister who is a senior this year. My aunts also graduated in 1986 and 1989. Regina has always been home to us! I am blessed to have received an education that has flourished my confidence and leadership skills. When I was asked to come back, how could I refuse?

Whether you are a graduate from the sixties, or a recent graduate, our experiences have always been one in the same. We share in an unique sisterhood where the Harper Woods campus, has helped transform into our beautiful Warren campus. The same traditions still apply: uniforms, retreats, student council, Showboat, The Spector (now named The Regina Report), athletics, saddle shoes, and so much more! One of my favorite things I recently discovered is the same pews that sit in our chapel, are the exact pews from Harper Woods!

Thank you to all who have, and who will donate this year. Your contribution goes a long way, and it is greatly appreciated by the staff and students. I have had the best experience thus far working with classes on their reunions, and I am looking forward to connecting with many more alumna in the coming year!

Shelby

The Scepter is Back & Better Than Ever!

Regina High School first published a student-led newspaper in 1958 by the juniors of the Class of 1960 under the name The Scepter. The tradition of student journalism was kept alive until the students published their last issue in 2017.

New Alumnae Faces Roaming Regina Halls!

Lisa Avery '00 - School Social Worker

During COVID, Lisa Avery, Class of 2000, was working at a nursing home and realized she was burnt out. She knew she wanted to stay in social work, because as soon as she hears the words social work, she gets excited! So, Lisa decided to go back to school to get her school social work license. She knew she wanted to be in a school setting to help the adolescents of our future. Lisa felt she would be able to make the most difference in a school setting, which led her back to Regina home. Regina is home to many alumna, and even though she graduated from the Harper Woods campus, she is happy to be back at the school who gave her everything.

Lisa hopes to return the same positive impact to her students, just as she received while attending Regina. She mentions that even though the classes and academics are slightly different, the teachers and staffs care for the students is still just as strong as it was before. Regina taught Lisa that anything is possible, and how to be a leader. Everywhere you look in Regina, there are leadership roles being offered for all students. Between

holding club executive boards positions, to sports team captains, to student council, the students are the lead in everything they do here. Lisa credits Regina for giving her the best group of friends that she still is friends with to this day!

Lisa's favorite part about working with the girls is learning about their experiences and helping them overcome their greatest obstacles. She also stated, "The girls have me to just listen. Sometimes all kids need is for someone to listen,

continue to do for them." She gets to reassure girls that they are doing well in school and in life. She is happy to be back and hopes to make positive impacts to the student body, and we are so excited to have her in the building full time.

"Everywhere you go, you run into someone from the Regina community! Regina is truly a community for life and we will always come together when needed."
-Lisa Avery '00

and that is exactly what I am going to

Julie Cash Sharp '76 - Forensics Club Moderator

Julie Cash Sharp, Class of 1976, is excited to start the Forensics Club again after learning the team dissolved with the retirement of Vivian Sawicki. Sawicki was the English Department head, who formerly moderated and coached Forensics for Regina. Julie is hoping this team can make a major impact on the students like it did for her and her family. "Forensics is my passion! From the time I was young, poetry, theatre and performing arts were my lifeline. Whether through genetics or exposure, my children became lovers of theatre arts as well, and participated competitively in Forensics during both middle school and high school. It was then, I became involved as a Forensics coach and judge for the Eastside Catholic Forensics League (middle school) and later, the Detroit Catholic Forensics League (high school)" Julie stated. The benefits of public speaking and performance are limitless. It is essential in preparation for the working world, students learn and practice speech and research skills to inform or persuade an audience as well as, overcome the anxiety that so often accompanies public speaking.

Even though Julie walked through the Harper Woods halls, she is comforted knowing Regina’s rich history and tradition remain untouched and sacred in events like, the Big/Little Sister program, Powderpuff, Sophomore Day and Junior Ring Ceremony. One of her favorite Regina memories is from Sophomore Day. The class of ’76 voted the song which Julie had suggested, Sometimes, by The Carpenters as their class song. To her, the lyrics say it best – Sometimes, not often enough, we reflect upon the good things. And our thoughts always center around those we love. And I think about those people, who mean so much to me. And for so many years have made me so very happy. And I count the times I have forgotten to say thank you and just how much I love them.

By day, Julie is a pharmacist at Henry Ford Cottage Medical Center in Grosse Pointe Farms. She specializes in emergency room pharmacy, as well as ambulatory surgery and cancer care. We are so excited to have her back at Regina working with our students!

"My Regina experience prepared me for university life and beyond. I was given the academic and spiritual building blocks for both a successful career and fulfilling personal life."

Stephanie Bahorski '10 - Garden Club Moderator

In August 2022, Stephanie Bahorski, Class of 2010, became a certified Master Gardener through Michigan State University's Extension program. The course focuses on many gardening topics from growing veggies, to soil health, to composting, and narrowing in on your interests with volunteer projects. There is a 14-week class, exam, and a specific number of volunteer hours that are needed to become certified. She was interested in getting her required volunteer hours at Regina, so she reached out to Mary Treder Lang. Mary pitched the Garden Club idea, and Stephanie was really excited! So, they spent the summer planning and kicked it off for this school year. There are 12 girls in garden club! For additional background, she has been a beekeeper for five years. Stephanie initially decided to become a Master Gardener so she could learn more about creating pollinator habitats for her honeybees, but to her surprise it has opened the doors for so many other interests, including native plants, backyard fruits, and ecological design. By day, Stephanie is a project manager currently doing research for a government project on tobacco regulatory. This project looks at tobacco use and its effects on people's health over time. This research informs the FDA's regulatory policies around various tobacco and nicotine products.

When asked how Regina impacted her life, she mentioned the education she received at Regina provided a strong foundation for her success in college, grad school, and her career. Regina gave Stephanie the critical thinking skills and work ethic to achieve both, her personal and professional goals. When the Garden Club launched, Stephanie did not realize seeing the girls would be the highlight of her week! The Garden Club has only been around for a few months, and the members have already put in so much work to improve the indoor greenhouses with new plants and beautifying the school grounds with tulips and other bulbs that will bloom in the spring. Their hard work really demonstrates their commitment to nature, the school, and the student body.

"The students are so passionate and excited about gardening, and it's nice to share that excitement with them. They are very hardworking, and their enthusiasm makes my day."

-Stephanie Bahorski '10

Classroom Updates

All classrooms were updated this year with new IFP Smart Boards. A special thank you to the Regina Mothers Guild, the Regina Dads Club, the Thibault family and Basile family for the investment in our students. Investments such as this ensure our students have the latest technology available! Additionally, three of our classrooms received an uplift with brand new STEM furniture! We hope to add more classroom updates next year.

Sister Lucinda Visit

We were honored to have Sister Lucinda back at Regina for our St. Francis Mass in October! Sister Lucinda used to work in the cafeteria at the Harper Woods location. She was gifted an iPad from the school to allow her to stay in contact with her Michigan friends as she moves out of state into a motherhouse. She was joined by alumna Stefanie McNally ’02, Mark Hrabovsky - proud alumnae dad of Julie ‘07 & Tracy ’09, and Regina staff members. We wish her nothing but the best!

Crown Legacy League

The Crown Legacy League is open to all Regina High School Seniors. In our second year as a club, we have 22 girls from the Class of 2023. As the journey as a Regina student ends, the journey as a Regina Alumna just begins. The Crown Legacy League will be hosting workshops throughout the year led by select Regina alumnae and their colleagues. These workshops will cover life skills pertaining to networking, financial planning, public speaking, and transitioning skills for success!
