Dear Friends,

For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. Luke 12:34

ith great pride, we are pleased to send you this first edition of VERITAS, a magazine celebrating Regina Dominican High School. Each section of this publication highlights one aspect of life at Regina. As you read the articles written by our students, parents, staff and alumnae, you will learn of the many programs and activities that continue to mark our school as Catholic, Dominican, female-centered and college-preparatory. This first edition of VERITAS includes the Annual Report for 2009-2010. With deep gratitude I thank each of you who generously contributed to the Regina Fund. Jesus tells us in the Gospel of Luke, “Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” Thank you for keeping the heritage and good work of this school in your hearts and blessing us with the gift of your treasure. Your generosity supports innovations in our academic programs and enables us to offer tuition assistance to almost 50% of our young women. In the past year our advancement program was gifted with a matching grant. The spring solicitation of the Regina Fund focused on securing funds to match this grant. Your response to this appeal was outstanding. Thank you so very much. May special blessings be showered upon the donor of this generous grant. I want to acknowledge and offer my sincere appreciation to Kerrigan McNulty, Director of Advancement, and the Regina Fund Advisory Committee for their careful stewardship of this program. Some exciting changes have taken place in our advancement efforts over the past year. The Regina Fund and the Veritas Society were established. The President’s Brunch was moved to the fall and the Black and White Ball now takes place in late February. Our Alumnae Office has hosted innovative events and activities for our alums of all ages. The school’s redesigned and inviting website provides up-to-date information on all that is happening in the school. New links make it easy for alumnae to connect with the school and for donors to make contributions at any time. Our good and gracious God continues to bless our school community in so many ways. Please join me in offering honor and praise to God for the blessings we have received. Sincerely,

S. Mary Margaret Pachucki, OP President

The Thorrens Family:

a Tradition of Dominican Education

E

very year at gradution, a handful of Regina seniors are given the honor of receiving their diplomas from their alumnae mothers. 2010 marked the first year a graduate was given her diploma by her mother and grandmother. Kerry Thorrens ’10 graduated with honors on May 30th, and joining her on the Regina Dominican stage were her mother, Sarah O’Malley Thorrens ’82, and her grandmother, Jane Doyle O’Malley, Aquinas Dominican High School ’55. The O’Malley/Thorrens family is very active at Regina. During one of the many events that the O’Malley family was supporting, Jane mentioned to S. Mary Margaret Pachucki, OP that she attended Aquinas Dominican High School in Chicago. Aquinas Dominican opened in 1915 as an all-girls school and was sponsored by the Adrian Dominican Sisters. Jane graduated from an Adrian Dominican all-girls school in 1955 and now, 55 years later, her granddaughter was also graduating from an Adrian Dominican all-girls school. It made perfect sense that Jane would join her daughter, Sarah, in presenting Kerry with her diploma. How is today’s Regina different from when you were a student? Sarah: The brown tweed uniforms are gone! The school is smaller now, too. My class had 220 girls in it and I think it was almost a little bit too big then. The student-teacher ratio and interaction is much better now. Another difference is the diversity of the student body. Today Regina draws women from a much broader geographic range, pushing further into the city and farther out in the suburban areas. The cultural diversity of the school is more in line with overall demographic changes in the Chicago area over the last 25+ years since I was there. This is a great thing! How did Regina shape who you are today? Sarah: Regina was a place where every student could find and develop her voice. It was a place of leaders, true friendships, teamwork and collaboration. At Regina, every leader of every organization, every class president, every valedictorian, every captain of every team, was a woman! We saw women standing up for what was right, leading, and achieving. I took those lessons with me as I moved on to a very large public university, and into the work world, where I’ve now been in Human Resources and Talent Management for almost 25 years. The experiences I had at Regina – hard work, commitment, fun, friendship, caring and community - have influenced me every day in my work and personal life.

coaches and teammates pushed me to be a good athlete and especially a strong teammate and leader.

Jane Doyle O’Malley ’55

Do you have a favorite memory from the past four years? Kerry: Every year, Regina has an event called Gnimocemoh. It is our homecoming week. What I love about this week is that each class unites to take on the other three grades in friendly competition to be the most creative and spirited. During my junior year, my class was successful in banding together to beat the senior class (the seniors were not too pleased). This experience helped bring us closer together, and I believe that was the reason we were such a strong, spirited class during our days at Regina.

You were obviously somewhat familiar with Regina before entering as a student your freshman year. Did any of your opinions about single-sex education for girls change over the last four years? Kerry: I can’t help but laugh at this question. Yes, yes, yes, they did! My parents decided that Regina was the best school for me. I was worried about things like meeting boys and having to ask them to dances, and not knowing a lot of other girls. To get to know the school and meet Kerry Thorrens ’10 people, I went to basketball and volleyball camp at Regina the summer after 8th grade. I had the best time, and met tons of girls. Dear Regina Friends and Family,

M

y name is Emily Griffith and I have been elected the Student Council President for the 2010-2011 school year. I have been involved in Student Council for three years, spending last year as corresponding secretary. During the upcoming school year, I hope to invigorate the Regina community. One exciting event that took place on October 7th of this year was the annual Junior High Leadership Conference co-sponsored by Notre Dame College Prep. The conference is an exciting day when student leaders from surrounding grammar schools are invited to join us to experience high school student and class councils in action. The guest speaker for the Leadership Conference this year was George H. McCaskey, Vice Chairman for the Chicago Bears. Our theme for the conference was Strive for the Drive, and we will be participating in the Bears Coat Drive. I am excited about my new leadership role at Regina Dominican High School and for the start of the new school year. There are always so many exciting things happening around our halls. This fall, don’t forget that alumnae and friends are always welcome back to see what’s going on at Regina! Sincerely, Emily Griffith ‘11 Student Council President

Computer Programming Makes its Way to Regina

F

our Regina Dominican sophomores spent part of their summer at Regina’s first-ever Basic Computer Programming course. The five week course introduced students to the importance of programming and taught them the fundamentals behind creating successful programs. The new offering focused on Algorithmic thinking and logic and the math skills necessary for understanding theories behind programming directives. Through the use of Alice software, a teaching tool for introductory computing, students gained a basic understanding of programming language and concepts and used those new skills to create 5-6 minute animations. Alice is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or designing a video to share on the web. It uses 3D graphics and a drag-and-drop interface to facilitate a more engaging, less frustrating first programming experience. Co-developed by Math teacher Christy Bowman and Regina Technology Director Jane Washburne, the course set a foundation for students to program in various computer languages, which will hopefully lead to future courses. Ms. Washburne anticipates offering more opportunities throughout the school year and notes that there are a lot of scholarships available for women in programming. She would like to create a solid programming foundation at Regina for students to draw from should they choose to pursue a future in computer science. Technology Director, Jane Washburne, and “Currently there’s a tremendous lack the Computer Programming students at their of women in computer programming. final presentation. Some of that is due to the fact that it is a male-dominated field and it’s incredibly easy to get intimidated,” said Ms. Washburne. “Being at an all-girls school, you’re not going to have that influence so the girls can rise to the top. During our course, the students relied on each other when they needed help and they learned by doing.” At the end of the course, students gave college-level presentations where they premiered their animations, discussed some of the problems they encountered throughout the programming process and how they were resolved, and took questions from the audience. Students not only learned the basics of programming, but they also gained one half of a math credit. This was just the first step in what Ms. Washburne hopes will be the future of programming at Regina. 

ver the weekend of June 13th, Nicole Jaconetty ‘10, competed in National History Day at the University of Maryland at College Park. Nicole qualified for the event after participating in the Chicago Metro History Fair and advancing to the State Exposition with a ten minute dramatic performance based on the creation of the juvenile court system. For thirty years the Chicago Metro History Education Project has sponsored the Chicago Metro History Fair. The fair inspires junior high and high school students to generate significant research by writing papers, producing documentaries or creating individual or group performances which can culminate in being chosen as a member of the Illinois National History Day Delegation (NHD). Statewide, the program included over 20,000 students. At the Chicago Metro History Fair, Nicole became a Metro Regional Finalist and advanced to the State Exposition (sponsored by the Illinois Historical Society) on May 6th in Springfield. There she received a superior award and was one of two qualifiers from the State of Illinois in the individual performance category. Katherine Kinnaird ’08 is the only other student in Regina history who has made it to Nationals. “Nicole’s passion is history,” said Sister Marion O’Connor, OP, Social Studies department chair at Regina Dominican. Mike Small, Social Studies teacher at Regina noted, “she is interested in government and politics and seizes the opportunities to get involved in these types of events.” Nicole has travelled with Mr. Small and his history students to Youth Government Day at the State Capital in Springfield. Celebrating Sister Marion

pril 28th, 2010, was designated Sister Marion Day at Regina Dominican High School. The entire Regina Dominican community celebrated Sister Marion O’Connor, OP, and honored her receipt of the National Catholic Educational Association’s (NCEA) Secondary Schools Department Award for 2010. The day began with an introduction and prayer of thanks read by English teacher Verna Allworth ‘77. At the beginning of each period, a Regina alumna and current faculty or staff member read a fun fact about Sister Marion. In addition, students, faculty and staff were given a button that read, “I ♥ Sister Marion.” Sister Marion O’Connor, OP began her tenure at Regina Dominican High School in 1964 as a Theology and Social Studies teacher and in 1987 was named Social Studies department chair. Throughout her years at Regina, Sister Marion has remained enthusiastic about her varied roles as a teacher, class moderator and department chair. She especially finds great joy in maintaining alumnae relations. For 60 years, Sister Marion has served in the ministry of Catholic education and for the past 45 years at Regina Dominican, where she has had an extraordinary influence on thousands of young women. The NCEA Secondary Schools Department award honors significant leadership and service contributions to Catholic high school education. The award brings national recognition to the achievements of six outstanding educators who reflect the richness and diversity of American Catholic education. Sister Marion received the national award during the Secondary Schools Department’s annual convocation and awards ceremony on April 7th, at the NCEA Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul. 

Dear Regina Dominican Families,

A

s Athletic Director I would like to welcome the class of 2014 and welcome back the students of the classes of 2013, 2012 and 2011. I am looking forward to another great sports season. During the 2009-2010 school year, 306 of our athletes competed in 24 different levels of 13 various competitive sports. It was a very successful and exciting year. The Regina track team placed second at Sectionals (12 athletes competed downstate in the IHSA State Championship), our soccer team won a Regional title, Panthers volleyball advanced to the Regional Championship, our basketball team advanced to the Sectional Championship and cross country won a Regional Championship (one athlete advanced to the IHSA State Championship). These are just a few of our student athlete accomplishments. Over 90% of our Varsity athletes were on the academic honor roll which is quite an impressive feat. Please read on to see how some of our teams finished out the 2009-2010 season and remember, you are always welcome to come cheer on our Panthers! Sincerely, Bob Carlson Athletic Director

Coach’s Corner Cross Country and Track Highlights from the 2009-2010 Season by Coach Mark Szczepkowski

The Panther cross country team saw a tremendous amount of success in the 2009-2010 season. Highlights of the season were the 4th place finish at the GCAC Championship meet and taking home their second consecutive IHSA Regional title. Regina’s cross country team won back-to-back Regional titles for the first time in school history and secured the fourth IHSA Regional title in school history. Amber Seo ’10 and Ellie Heinrich ‘11 both finished in the top five at the Regional meet to earn All-Region individual distinction. Heinrich advanced to the IHSA State meet as an individual by taking 18th out of a field of 145 to earn the last individual qualifying berth. Heinrich competed admirably downstate and finished in 99th place in the Class 2A State meet. Academically, the

Panther cross country team excelled in the classroom and was given an IHSA Team Academic Achievement Award by holding a 3.58 team GPA on a converted 4.0 scale. The 2010 season looks quite promising for Regina’s cross country team, with six out of its top seven runners from the IHSA Sectional meet from last year. The team’s strengths will be its strong senior and sophomore class runners. The Panthers look to crack the top three of the GCAC, to earn a school-record third consecutive IHSA Regional title, and to advance to the IHSA State meet as a team for just the third time in school history. The 2010 Panther Track and Field team had one of the best postseasons in school history. At the IHSA Class 2A

athletics

Chicago (Lake View) Sectional, the Panthers scored 131 points and finished in 2nd place to Walter Payton College Prep. The Panthers had a historic meet and racked up six Sectional titles and sent 12 girls to the IHSA Class 2A State Championships in eight different events. The Panthers set school records for most team points at a Sectional meet, most Individual Sectional Champions, and total State Qualifiers. The track team was also extremely proud of one of its captains, Jacqueline Ave Maria ‘10, who was named the Senior Athlete of the Year at Convocation. Ave Maria excelled in cross country and track, and advanced to the State Championship in both sports. She was also named team MVP in both sports. Ave Maria left Regina as one of its most accomplished runners, both athletically and academically. Looking ahead to the 2011 season, Regina’s track and field team should compete for an IHSA Sectional title and send plenty of athletes to the IHSA State meet. The team will be returning a great distance running corps along with some experienced field event competitors and sprinters. 

From the Sidelines...

W

ell, the lazy days of summer are drawing to a close, and now we’re all busy--with work, family commitments, kids’ activities--the fall routine. But one of the nicest things about getting back into the school year is the opportunity to take a break in the action and attend a Regina sporting event. Our girls work hard in a wide range of sports, and for a small school, they have some impressive accomplishments Here are three good reasons to get out to the track meet or the soccer field or the swimming pool: 1. Do it for your daughter. Whether she admits it or not, your daughter feels good when you’re in the stands, watching her team perform. I can tell you from experience that these high school years go by quickly...so don’t let this opportunity to support your daughter slip by. 2. Do it for Regina. The more parents, alumnae and friends we have at a sports event cheering for our girls, the more energy we generate for the team. And it’s a great way to show our commitment to our school. 3. Do it for yourself. Attending a Regina sports event is a wonderful way to meet the parents of your daughters’ Regina friends. Some of my closest connections with other Regina parents have been forged while watching a soccer game or a track meet (I think the worst weather brings out the warmest friendships!). Hope to see you at the game, John Reilly RDHS Board member, Father of Kristine ’09, Meghan ’11, and Caroline ’14

Bass Fishing

Last year Regina’s bass fisherwomen had several opportunities to fish in tournaments against other schools in late September and October and again in April. In March of 2010, the club attended the Bass Pro Sports High School Bass event and the Cabela’s High School Bass event. Panthers bass fishing also participated in the 2nd annual Illinois State Regional Bass Fishing Tournament and had eight competitors. The largest bass caught by one of our team members was in practice for the State Regional Event at Skokie Lagoons by Vicki The 2009-2010 Bass Fishing Club Stancy ’13.

Golf

In 2009, the Regina Dominican golf team consisted of 14 dedicated athletes who all improved throughout the season. After a slow start, the Varsity team finished with a 5-7 record, and the Junior Varsity team finished with a 3-2 record. The most exciting team performance came after two consecutive losses. In the third meet of the season both the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams beat Trinity High School. Beating Trinity was the spark the team needed, and the trend for Varsity scores was lower over the subsequent meets. The 2009-2010 Golf Team The experience gained and improvement achieved by players in 2009 positions the Regina Dominican golf team for a potentially much better record for the 2010 season.

Lacrosse

The Panthers lacrosse team spent the early spring months practicing for the opportunity to play some of the best teams in the country. Regina ended the season with a 2-10 record, but by the playoffs the Panther defense was working well together. Goalie Ann Marie Gast ’11 worked hard to help all the newcomers and her performance earned her a top goalie ranking. Gast is sure to be a top player going into the new season. Look for Regina Dominican lacrosse to make a big splash in 2011.

Bowling

Panthers Varsity bowling consisted of seven bowlers and finished 7th in the conference. Our highest game was bowled by Maggie Grossbart ’10 with a score of 202 and five strikes in a row. Personal highs included Holly Hoenig ’11 and Krystal Hernandez ‘10 who also bowled five strikes in a row. Junior Varsity consisted of six bowlers and finished 6th in the conference. High games were shot by Gracy Dolan ’13 and Mercedes Munoz ’13 both with scores of 172. The JV Panthers also bowled in the IMSA tournament and finished 5th out of 11 teams. Soccer

Regina won its first Regional soccer title in 15 years this past spring, beating Amundsen 5-0 in the Regional final with all five goals scored by Teri Valenzuela ’10. Regina advanced to the final after beating CISC/Northtown 6-0 in the semi-final. The season ended with a defeat to Lakes in the Sectional semi-final. MVP Kelly Kulinski ’11 made All-Conference and AllSectional, narrowly missing out on All-State honors. The 2009-2010 Varsity Soccer Team She was also voted on to the Pioneer Press North Stars All-Area soccer second team. Teri Valenzuela ’10 was AllConference while she and Sarah Monick ’11 both earned Pioneer Press honorable mentions.

Softball

The JV team had a .500 season and surprised some teams in the playoffs. Their highlight was beating the always tough Loyola Academy Ramblers on their field to advance in the playoffs. A few highlights from the Varsity team included a 12 strikeout pitching performance and a no-hitter by Jennie Frake ’10, a 12 strikeout performance by Holly Hoening ’11, and Kati Herberg ’12 was named to the All-Conference team. We will be looking to return with a strong nucleus for 2010-2011 spring season.

Tennis

Panthers tennis weathered a tough 2009 season with three wins and four losses in the GCAC and a 1-3 record out of conference. Moira Doman ‘10 earned the Most Valuable Player award and Eileen Judlowski’s ‘10 hard work secured the Most Improved Player for 2009. The women’s tennis season runs from mid-August through midOctober with the Illinois State Tournaments.

Volleyball

The 2009-2010 volleyball season had it shares of ups and downs but as a program the year was successful. After a summer of workouts and preparation the Varsity team was poised to make an impact in the GCAC. A team composed mainly of seniors and sophomores started their season with a bang by defeating Maine South. That match foreshadowed the pace of the season as the Panthers continued to build more success. The program hit a milestone as the team finally entered into the top division of the GCAC and were ranked fifth going into the conference tournament. Panthers volleyball entered into the top division of the GCAC, and competed well with one of the toughest schedules yet. Come support our Regina Panthers as they strive to find even more success this year. 

Swimming

The JV and Varsity swim teams made huge strides in 2009, each winning two dual meets. The Varsity team placed 7th at the Elk Grove Invitational and 5th at the Latin Invitational, both improvements over their 2008 results. The JV swim team competed at the MCAC JV Conference Championships for the first time in school history and finished 11th out of 12 teams. The Varsity swim team finished 12th out of 14 teams at the Varsity MCAC Championships, which featured three of the top 10 teams in Illinois. They also finished 10th out of 12 teams at the IHSA Sectional meet, which also featured some of Illinois’ top teams. The 2009 swim team was ranked 23rd Nationally in the NISCA Dual Meet Team Rankings, for independent schools with enrollments under 900. This was the second time in two years that they were ranked in the top 25 nationally. Captains Nicole Jaconetty ’10 and Kate Kurgan ’10 along with nine other swimmers were named to the MCAC All-Academic team. Kate Kurgan was also named a NISCA Academic All-American, which is the 2nd time in two years a Panther has qualified for this award.

The Trip of a Lifetime By Pat McDonell, Academic Dean

F

or three wonderful weeks this past summer, I had the pleasure of accompanying Regina students and sisters, Alexis ’10 and Krista ’12 Interrante, and my nephew, Kevin McDonell, to Uganda. For me, it was a return trip to a place I had come to love after a journey there in 2007. I had gone to visit Fr. Stan Atipoupou who is a dear friend and Comboni missionary in Alenga, Uganda. Interest in our recent trip began in early August of 2009 when Fr. Stan returned to the U.S. for a visit and spent a day at Regina. He had the pleasure of meeting with some of our students as they gave him the grand tour of their school. Alexis and Krista were two of those students and when they returned to school a few weeks later, Alexis asked me, “So when are we going to Uganda?” Initially I wasn’t sure if she was serious, but it quickly became evident that she was passionate about taking this trip before going off to college.

Her enthusiasm was contagious. Krista and Kevin, also a recent high school graduate, were soon on board. Christie Billups, a professor at Lewis University, and my earlier travel companion to Uganda was also excited to accompany us. Needless to say, Fr. Stan thought it was a great idea and anxiously awaited our arrival. Thanks to the students’ very supportive parents, the trip was on! On June 18th, after a 26 hour trip through Toronto and Brussels, we arrived tired but excited in the capital city of Kampala. Fr. Stan welcomed us with open arms. Before traveling to Alenga, we spent a couple of days in Kampala, where we visited the equator and gathered needed food and supplies. Alenga is “in the bush” about five hours north of Kampala and our journey there involved crossing the Nile by ferry boat. Quite an experience! Our time at the Catholic mission was truly memorable. The people of Alenga were so welcoming and grateful that we

had come to visit them. Alexis, Krista and Kevin totally immersed themselves in service projects and getting to know the people. Our group loved teaching English to 15 teenage girls who attended the tailoring school at the mission. Friendships quickly developed and time was also spent having the girls teach us the local language, Lango. We helped to host a retreat for 300 local youth where a

“To see people our age so happy to be going to school made us realize how much we had in life and how happy they were with how little they had.” — Alexis Interrante ‘10 “Ugandan Idol” competition was organized by our students and was a highlight of the weekend. We experienced a baptism ceremony for 14 infants in a nearby village and also accompanied Fr. Stan to a wedding and reception that he presided over for three couples. Our students became adept at their public speaking skills as it was expected that as a guest you would “present yourself” in each village or area that we visited. We also experienced first hand a project that is ongoing in the Alenga area: the drilling of bore holes for fresh water. It was not uncommon to see women and children walking for miles to fill large jugs with water at the closest well.

faith and community

Through fundraising efforts in the past year, Regina students have sponsored the education of two girls in the Alenga Parish. There are many girls who are being helped through this project and they are known as the Little Flowers. We were fortunate to be able to visit many of the Little Flowers at their schools and also to meet their parents when they came to personally thank us at the mission. Many families brought us live chickens or goats as gifts of appreciation and thoroughly enjoyed watching us as we rather squeamishly accepted them. No trip to Uganda would be complete without a safari. We treasured the three days we spent at Murchison Falls National Park where we saw an array of animals, took a boat trip down the Nile, and hiked to the top of the falls. Giraffes, elephants, hippos, monkeys and baboons were spotted quite often and we were one of the few groups to see a leopard. Our time in Uganda seemed to go so quickly. Before leaving Alenga and Fr. Stan to return home, we enjoyed a wonderful farewell party and were

overwhelmed by the hospitality of our new friends. We vowed to continue to share their story, to pray for them, and to remember their needs. Education is first and foremost on their minds and we hope to be able to continue to support their efforts in this area. The Interrante sisters were wonderful representatives of Regina Dominican High School. I was blessed to share this experience with three amazing young adults. 

Glass Slipper Project

t eight at night, there is a knock at the convent door. Who or what could it be? A lost package finally arrived? When the door opens, in steps an alum, looking to donate a dress to the Glass Slipper Project. This was just one in a trickle that led to a flood of 237 dresses by the project’s end. The Glass Slipper Project is a non-forprofit organization that collects new and used dresses and accessories for underprivileged teens in the Chicago area. These dresses are given to teens free of charge for their prom. The Senior Leadership Board organized the project. They aimed to call to mind a spirit of generosity. “With prom season coming up, I wanted to remind the girls of how fortunate they are that they can go out and buy a dress,” said moderator Verna Allworth ’77. “We never want a girl to say she can’t go to prom because she can’t afford it,” Allworth said. For the cause, one dress rack stood in

he offices of Admissions and Alumnae are pleased to introduce to you Regina’s “A Team.” Our mission is to provide service opportunities that will allow alumnae to work with our student ambassadors while donating their time at local non-profit organizations. We have chosen to launch the program this fall by committing to three dates for the “Food for Folks” program at the Ronald McDonald House Chicago near Children’s

the second floor hallway. By March 5th, the last day of collection, the rack was exploding with dresses, shoes and accessories. Students, faculty and alumnae had donated generously to the cause. “I had three dresses that I wasn’t going to wear anymore that underprivileged teenage girls would really appreciate. They deserve to feel special at their prom just like we do,” Erica Acosta ‘11 said. Other donors had given dresses, some still with the tags on them. “The project was definitely a success,” Allworth said. When Senior Board members Moira Doman ’10 and Deirdre McNally ’10 dropped off the dresses at Zengeler’s Cleaners in Northfield, the employees were shocked. “When we brought in the first box, the man was impressed. Six boxes later, he was speechless,” Doman said. But the clock did not strike midnight when Regina stopped collecting dresses. The Project accepts donations all year round. “Dresses collected after prom season will be used next year,” Allworth said. 

OLPH Gathering

Dear Alumnae and Friends,

A

s the 53rd academic year at Regina Dominican begins, I continue to be amazed by the dedication and achievements of our alumnae, who currently number over 9,000. Many of our alumnae hold positions of prestige, with doctors, lawyers, and CEO’s among the mix. Equally impressive is the number of Regina Dominican alumnae who give so much of themselves for very little pay, working in social services and the non-profit sector. This past spring, I put out a request for alumnae willing to donate their time by sharing their professional experiences with our students for Wellness Day. The response was truly overwhelming, and we hope to welcome many more of you back for Career Day this fall. In the coming months, you will be hearing from us via a new electronic version of our alumnae newsletter in Black & White. The switch to electronic transmittal of the newsletter will allow us to communicate to you school news and information about alumnae events on a more frequent basis. This fall, I will be working with Pattie Fuentes, our Admissions Director, to bring you a series of service opportunities that will also give each of you the chance to meet some of our current students. Regina’s “A Team” (consisting of alumnae and student ambassadors) will be volunteering at a variety of local non-profit organizations, and I would like to personally invite each of you to join us. We are also in the process of increasing membership in Regina’s Alumnae Council. This group works to bring successful social and fundraising events to our alumnae. We meet every other month (excluding the summer), and becoming a member is a great way to give thanks for your own Regina Dominican experience. Finally, I would like to congratulate our alumnae on a fantastic response to the Alumnae Participation Challenge. Over the course of the last several months, alumnae participation in the Regina Dominican Fund has more than doubled! Special thanks to everyone who donated; we are so grateful for your support. I wish each of you all the best for the coming school year, and I look forward to hearing from you. Warm regards, Molly Nelson Harris ‘97 Alumnae Coordinator

“Spotlight On…”

I

n the spring of 2010, a new feature was added to the Alumnae section of Regina’s website: “Spotlight On….” This most recent addition will give us the opportunity to showcase the many incredible accomplishments of our alumnae community. The series has been kicked off with a feature on Maggie Cushing Burke ’75. An excerpt from the feature appears below. Regina Dominican is proud to announce that on March 21, 2010, Maggie Cushing Burke ’75 was inducted into the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC) Hall of Fame for basketball, volleyball, and softball. “It is a tremendous accomplishment for Maggie to be recognized for three separate sports,” said Bob Carlson, Athletic Director of Regina Dominican. “I am sure that she is particularly honored to be recognized by her peers in the GCAC.” Though participating in three sports at a college preparatory high school is daunting by any standard, Burke (whose daughter, Emily, graduated from Regina in 2009) maintains that athletics motivated her to do well in her classes. A self-described “average student” who worked hard for her grades, Burke feels fortunate to have had the support of her parents and teachers. “There were, and still appears to be, teachers at Regina who take an interest in you as a student and are very willing to do whatever it takes to help you do well in school,” she states. To read the entire article, please visit “Spotlight On” in the Alumnae section of our website (www.rdhs.org). If you would like to nominate an alumna to be featured, please email mharris@rdhs.org. 

Legacy Families of Regina Dominican High School

T

he fact that so many alumnae of Regina Dominican have chosen to send their daughters to their alma mater is a testament to the fact that the community of Regina Dominican really is a family. We are so grateful to these women, each of whom valued their experience at Regina Dominican so much that they would settle for nothing less for their daughters and nieces. This past summer, we asked families with multiple alumnae to send us a description of the role that Regina has played in their lives. Thank you to everyone who submitted stories!

RDHS has taught my entire family how to become independent women who aren’t afraid of being intelligent and strong. My mother was adamant that my sisters and I attend Regina because she knew first-hand what the RDHS education would do for us: provide a solid education and the tools we would need to be successful in life. I owe a lot of my personal accomplishments to the education I received at Regina, which led me to realize that I wanted to become a leader, thus shaping my future. RDHS truly empowered us to believe that women can achieve anything they set their mind to, and, they were right. - Kristen Fligelman Licciardi ’96 The Walter sisters (Patricia Walter, OP ’62, Rita Walter ‘67, Margaret Walter ’76, Veronica Walter ’77, and Eileen Walter ‘78) all attended Regina, as did Rita’s daughters (Sarah Fligelman ‘94, Kristen Fligelman Licciardi ‘96, Rebecca Fligelman ‘99). Patricia Walter, OP ’62 also taught at Regina. To this day, I strongly value the close friendships that were fostered at Regina which have shaped my life both during and after high school. Each time I pull into the parking lot I have so many wonderful memories of persons and events of my younger years! It has truly been a joy to go back to Regina and really appreciate what it has to offer through the eyes of a mother. Witnessing the spiritual, intellectual, and emotional growth of my daughter underscores the importance of positive role models and the supportive and nurturing environment of RDHS. I am so VERY grateful for the comfort and peace of mind in knowing that my daughters will receive the same level of care and concern that so positively affected my life. Buffy McNabola Rock ’74 Buffy graduated Regina in 1974, second daughter Madeline is the class of 2011 and youngest daughter Kathleen will be the class of 2015.

Susan is a bookkeeper for TCI Construction. She is also a mother of three and grandmother of nine. Her sister, Beverly Wink Long, attended Regina her freshman year. Their cousins Joanne Ghiselli Blake ‘69 and Myra Ghiselli Schrup ’75 both graduated from Regina. Joanne’s daughter, Heather Blake, graduated from Regina in 2004 and now lives in Wilmette. After earning a B.A. from Marquette University and a Masters in Library and Information Science from Dominican University, Heather currently works in a public library. Heather’s cousin, Michelle Ghiselli, graduated from Regina in 2010 and will be attending Western Illinois University in the fall. - Joann Ghiselli Blake ’69 All of us in the Berrafato family feel that Regina gave us the educational foundation necessary to pursue our individual careers while developing into mature and independent young women in the workplace. I loved my courses, and I loved the support and camaraderie—from both the students and teachers—that I felt as being part of the RDHS community. Perhaps one day, my daughter Isabella Grace (2027) will also sport her plaid uniform skirt in the halls of Regina Dominican and sing in the Regina Benefit! I am a graduate of Regina (1965) and my daughter Kaylee also attended Regina Dominican (1992). Although the rest of my children are boys, Regina was also a part of their lives, as they participated in Regina theatre when they were at Loyola Academy. I can assure you that Regina has made Kaylee and I develop into very secure and strong women. In addition to being an elementary school teacher and full-time mom, I have developed my own business . My daughter Kaylee is a full-time mom who dedicated two years of her life teaching the underprivileged. Two generations of women have attended Regina Dominican High School from the Tsoumas and Schnitzius families. Deborah R. Tsoumas (Dawson) graduated in 1972. She had four children with Thomas E. Schnitzius: Jennifer M. Schnitzius (Duringer) ‘94, Sarah C. Schnitzius ’96, Christine E. Schnitzius ’99, and Matthew E. Schnitzius. Jennifer, Sarah and Christine all played soccer on Regina’s Varsity team. In fact, Sarah and Christine played on the same team together in 1996, a fact the local paper did a story on because they were one of FOUR sister pairs playing that year! Both mother and daughters were taught history by Sister Marion O’Connor; all four women remember the great expectations Sister Marion placed on them in class, which served them well in molding study and learning habits for college. These women also formed lasting friendships while at Regina. Debbie has been friends with Jodi Farinella Fahrenbach ‘72 since freshman year-a friendship which is 42 years strong! They raised their children together in Park Ridge and now share in the joy of being grandmothers. - Jennifer Schnitzius Duringer ’94

Both my daughter, Amanda (2008) and I graduated from Regina. Each of us had wonderful experiences that left us well prepared for our futures! One of the biggest thrills of my life was presenting her with her diploma at graduation. - Kathleen Riley ’78 Regina Dominican High School served the five O’Reilly girls quite well. The English Department gave us a competitive advantage in college because we had years of experience in essay writing and class presentations. Organizing and running school events like Mardi Gras provided great training as well. Class songs, loafers with brown knee socks, Ring Day Mass, singing with star performers at the annual benefit, non-uniform days and locating extra tickets for graduation were all part of our Regina days. It started with my mother, who graduated in 1969 as the valedictorian of her class at Regina Dominican High School. A generation later, I followed in her footsteps and graduated in 1998. And again, a few years later, my younger sister graduated from Regina in 2003. At Regina we received a solid foundation for our future, not only intellectually, but emotionally as well. We made memories and formed friendships that will last our lifetimes. We are Jan (Leibold)’69, Shannon ‘98 and Amanda ‘03 Zorn, and we are proud to be Reginites. – Shannon Zorn ‘98 One family with strong ties to Regina is the Endre/Freund family. Barb Endre Freund is a 1980 graduate and her daughter, Molly Freund, is a 2009 graduate. Her mother, Sue Endre, has been the Assistant to the Principal at Regina for nine years. Molly enjoyed all aspects of her Regina years. She commented , “Even though Regina is smaller than many other high schools in the area, it still offers a wide variety of extracurricular and athletic activities.” As a student, Barb felt that there was a good balance between learning and fun. As parents, the Freunds were glad that there was a strong, single-sex, Catholic high school option among wellrespected area high schools. They felt it was important to get involved. “Volunteer time in a wide variety of aspects allowed us to gain a greater appreciation of Regina.” Sue and LeRoy Endre were active in the Regina community as parents and enjoyed it again as grandparents with Molly. Sue said “I’ve loved my time at Regina, in every capacity.” - Barb Endre Freund ‘80 Regina inspires girls to thrive as individuals and challenges each girl to be their best. The academics are outstanding and we have an impressive faculty who truly care about each and every girl. Also, our graduates leave here accomplished young women who know the value of service. I love that Regina Girls are exposed to Adrian Dominican spirituality, reverence for life and emphasis on social justice.

We are delighted to be a part of this wonderful Regina community. - Joanie Schulte Reynolds ’72 Joanie’s sisters, Sally Schulte Staff ’65, Kathleen Schulte Kenefick ’67, and Dorie Schulte Westmeyer ’75, all attended Regina, as did her niece Megan Staff ’99 and daughter Laurie Reynolds ’03. Daughter Ellie Reynolds ’11 is graduating this year. I couldn’t have been happier when my daughter, Annie Kielian ’11, chose Regina for high school. For both of us, our years at Regina represent a time of learning, growth, and forming life-long friendships. Our family looks forward to Annie’s sister, Teresa Kielian, enjoying the same experience as a member of the class of 2016! – Jacky Walther ’72 

Annual Report

Dearest Friends,

T

his year marked the beginning of Regina’s second half-century. What a golden past and brilliant future—made possible by your loyal and generous support. On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our deepest thanks for your time, your expertise and your financial support. You are a vital part of the Regina community, which now boasts more than 9,000 alumnae. These are challenging times, and yet your commitment to support femalecentered education remains steadfast. Together, our financial support for Regina was greater than the prior year. Take pride in the fact that you helped defy a trend in which charitable giving across the US declined within the last year. We thank the Adrian Dominican Sisters for their commitment to Regina and the dedicated faculty and staff, and parents who entrust their daughters to Regina during a special time of their life. Together we ensure that young women have access to a curriculum that prepares them for college in an environment that promotes leadership, strong character and sound values, and a setting that strengthens faith and spirituality. My term as Chair of the Board is now complete, so this is my last letter to you, my fellow supporters of Regina. I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to the institution that made an impact on my career, my faith and my person. I look forward to serving Regina in other ways and working alongside you to support a school that means so much to all of us. With gratitude,

Carol Macur Rizzie ‘68 Chair of the Board

Regina Fund Beats Goal

T

he 2009-2010 Regina Fund beat its goal of $200,000. Thanks to very generous alumnae, parents and friends, the Regina Fund raised $207,000. In addition, the alumnae participation in the Regina Fund jumped from 3.5% to 8%. This year, we received a wonderful surprise by way of a matching gift. Through the spring appeal, the Regina Fund raised $53,000 that was matched by a very generous donor. This $53,000 matching gift was designated for the Endowment Fund to ensure the future of the school and generations of women to come. Every year, the Regina Fund raises money to support the school’s operating expenses, financial aid and capital improvements. The cost of running Regina Dominican is over $13,000 per student. However, tuition is only $10,500. This gap of $2,500 per student is covered through our fundraising efforts, including the events program, the major gift program and the Regina Fund. The Regina Fund also provides much needed financial aid for 52% of our students. Through the Regina Fund, donations can be made to the Alumnae Scholarship Fund or to the Sponsor a Student program. Both of these programs enable Regina to provide over $400,000 in tuition assistance that over half our students need. 

The 2009-2010 Regina Dominican Fund has concluded and we have succeeded in our goal to increase alumnae participation in the Fund. Alumnae participation increased from 3.5% to 8%. That is a massive 4.5% jump. The highest reported rate for alumnae participation in Annual Giving at a high school is 30%. We are well on our way! Every donation, big or small, is important. Many people, foundations and corporations view the percentage of graduates giving back to their school as an indicator of how satisfied they were with their education and experience. Participating in the Regina Dominican Fund is a tangible way to show your support of your alma matter. Thank you for your amazing support of the Regina Dominican Fund!

Scholarships at Regina Dominican

A

t the 2010 Black and White Ball, our first scholarship auction was held and raised over $40,000 for tuition assistance. This helped support the nearly $400,000 we offered in financial aid to 167 deserving students during the 2009-2010 school year. This year, our families need even more financial assistance. We can see the effects of the economy through the eyes of our families. Those who were once able to pay their tuition suddenly find themselves struggling to make ends meet. It is our goal to ensure that no student is turned away or has to leave Regina because of financial constraints. In this tough economic time, the best investment you can make is in the future of a Regina Girl. Every family at Regina pays something toward their tuition commitment; financial assistance only funds a portion of the tuition costs. Tuition assistance is funded through the Regina Dominican Fund, the Alumnae Scholarship Fund, the Sponsor a Student program and numerous endowed scholarships.

Alumnae Scholarship Fund

The Alumnae Scholarship Fund was established to provide tuition assistance for those students who demonstrate financial need and are in good academic standing. The Alumnae Scholarship Fund is supported through gifts made by generous donors and through the Scholarship Auction held at the annual Black and White Ball. Gifts can be made in honor of, or in memory of, a loved one.

Sponsor a Student

Through the Sponsor a Student program, donors can invest in a student who is need of financial aid. With the gift of $2,500 or more, a sponsor will be matched up with a student and encouraged to build a connection. Students in need of scholarship are in all grade levels and for that reason we encourage sponsors to consider making a multi-year commitment to a student.

Named Endowed Scholarships

Named scholarships are endowed so that the corpus is invested and the annual distributions are used to fund scholarships for deserving students. Currently, the minimum amount needed to be considered fully –funded is $50,000 within a five year period. Endowed scholarships may be named in the donor family name or in honor or memory of a loved one. Donations can also be made to an already established named scholarship. Please contact Kerrigan McNulty at kmcnulty@rdhs.org or 847-256-7660 for more information on investing in the future of Regina Dominican women. 

The Four Pillars Society

A

s part of the Order of Preachers, the Adrian Dominican Sisters strive to live out and preach the Gospel through the Dominican pillars of prayer, ministry, community and study. These four pillars are central to the Dominican tradition and ingrained in the mission of Regina Dominican High School. Joining the Four Pillars society with a planned gift to Regina Dominican High School is a powerful expression of your faith in the future of the school and the young women it educates. A planned gift provides significant future support for Regina Dominican and may provide a considerable tax benefit to your estate. Planned gifts are ideal for those supporters who may not be able to make a large cash gift today but would like to leave a lasting legacy that will help support the school for years to come. Some examples of these lasting legacies are bequests, gifts of life insurance or charitable remainder trusts. For a more detailed explanation of these and many other types of planned gifts please see our website, www.rdhs.org , or contact Kerrigan McNulty at 847-256-7660 or kmcnulty@rdhs.org. If you have already included Regina Dominican in your estate plans, please let us know so that we may properly acknowledge your commitment to Regina. 

2009-2010 Regina Dominican Fund

T

he Regina Dominican Fund is the cornerstone of our fundraising efforts and the key to Regina Dominican’s financial stability. The cost of tuition at Regina is considerably less than the cost to educate a student. Regina Dominican has a budget shortfall that needs to be made up through fundraising efforts every year. In addition to aiding the operating budget, the Regina Fund supports technology upgrades, faculty development, building and grounds improvements and scholarship and tuition assistance. The 2010

R

egina’s 20th Black and White Ball was held on February 20th, 2010 at the Westin Chicago North Shore. The evening included live and silent auctions and dinner and dancing. The 2010 Black and White Ball raised over $160,000. Regina Dominican High School would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our many sponsors and underwriters.

Joanie 72’ and Bob Reynolds, recipients of the 2010 Caeli Award

Two highlights at the Black and White Ball this year were the introductions of the Scholarship Auction and the Teacher’s Wish List. The Scholarship Auction raised over $40,000 for the Alumnae Scholarship Fund. Regina Dominican thanks those donors for their overwhelming response to the evening’s premiere auction. Donors to the Scholarship Auction are included in the Regina Fund list. The Teacher’s Wish List gave attendees an opportunity to fulfill a “wish” for creative and useful items requested by our dedicated teachers to enhance their classrooms. Attendees at the Black and White Ball responded with enthusiasm, rewarding and impressing Regina Dominican faculty with their generosity. We would like to thank those who made this first time endeavor a success.
