graced our shores since the reopening of the industry. This underscores the fact that we are more than capable of staging events with large numbers of people with enough controls in place to prevent a recurrence of the wide scale spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The return of Reggae Sumfest, after a pandemic-induced hiatus, has created quite a buzz and is widely anticipated by the growing cadre of reggae lovers across the globe. So, we must commend the current powerhouse behind Reggae Sumfest, Joe Bogdanovich, for his resilience, because without his persistence this return would not be possible, and we have every reason to believe that Reggae Sumfest 2022 will be a major success.

As a destination we remain very optimistic that given the rate of recovery of the tourism sector, where we are now closer to the pre-COVID-19 numbers of 2019 than expected, by the end of 2023, the number of visitors to Jamaica should reach 4.1 million, with 1.6 million cruise passengers, 2.5 million stopover arrivals, and US$4.2 billion in Catherine Hall is being prepared revenue. with an expanded space to ensure Crucial to the recovery of enjoyment and comfort, while being the tourism industry is the mindful of health precautions, and the resurgence of the entertaindigitization of tickets adds another ment sector. The successful staging of Reggae Sumfest will be one of the indicators of Jamaica’s commitment to ensuring that tourism is being rebuilt stronger. This entails offering excellent service and experiences as well as Jamaica’s promise to deliver to visitors a safe, secure, and seamless experience, which will encourage them to return and recommend our destination to others. The Ministry of Tourism’s commitment to the development of the entertainment sector is clearly demonstrated in the continued support provided by our public bodies, including the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) and the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB), for signature events such as Sumfest. This year patrons will have the opportunity of supporting Jamaica’s artisans and their best products in the special TEF-Sumfest Mall. There will be a delightful array of fascinating pieces of art, craft, jewellery, clothing and a myriad other products from merchants who have been carefully selected to ensure top-class items. So, I applaud Downsound Entertainment, on staging this year’s event and wish you great success. This festival has added enormous value to the travel and hospitality industry, and the Ministry of Tourism, through the TEF and JTB, is pleased to be a flagship partner for this important event.

This year Jamaica celebrates its 60th Anniversary of Independence under the theme, “Re-igniting a Nation for Greatness”, and the return of Reggae Sumfest – the Greatest Reggae Show on earth – is a clear signal that the entertainment sector is re-ignited and ready to re-assert itself towards the national agenda of prosperity for all. The phenomenal growth of Reggae Sumfest over the years has triggered the rise of many similar events in all corners of the world but Reggae Sumfest continues to stand out as the most authentic Jamaican Reggae festival, showcasing our music and culture to the world. Reggae Sumfest will give us a chance to see our superstars LIVE once again while providing that platform for sound systems and emerging bands as well as established acts and rising artistes. We look forward to the usual interactive performances for which the show has become known.

We anticipate the music and associated activities, including an artisan marketplace where the best of local arts and craft will be on display. I also note that the festival will be going completely digital with tickets, in keeping with global trends towards digital access to large events. The pandemic and the associated lockdowns hit our industry very hard but Entertainment is once again putting food on tables and continuing to provide avenues for therapy and release as we navigate these challenging times. As Minister with responsibility for Culture and Entertainment, I commend the organisers and say welcome back to Reggae Sumfest. In this the year of our Diamond Jubilee, I know that Joe Bogdanovich and team have a special celebration in store for us that will make it truly memorable.

We l c o m e b a c k t o R e g g a e Sumfest….The Greatest Reggae Show on Earth! It is an honour for me, as the Mayor of Montego Bay, to extend a warm welcome to Reggae Sumfest to our city after a two-year absence due to the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The return of Reggae Sumfest to several venues across the city of Montego Bay between July 18 and 23 will satisfy the cravings of music lovers who have been starving for quality live entertainment. Reggae Sumfest has, over the years, provided Jamaica in general and Montego Bay in particular with top-class entertainment and this year’s show is expected to be nothing less as the festival continues to unearth and showcase the nation’s best reggae talents under the guidance of DownSound Entertainment.

he COVID-19 Pandemic stole so much from us. For many, it stole loved ones, it stole our feeling of security, our children’s education, our livelihoods, our ability to be with each other and to enjoy ourselves. For us in the entertainment industry it was an unmitigated disaster, as all our opportunities for earning were prohibited.

JULY 18-23, 2022 MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

Ours was the first industry to be locked down and the last to be partially opened up. This return is an amazing blessing. It has been made possible because of the waning of the threat of COVID and thus an indication that things are finally returning to some level of normality.

The Return Team

FROM LEFT: Dwight “Bub” James, Worrell King, Martin Lewis, Claudia Artwell, Maxine McDonnough, Dealo “Jordan” Gordon, Michelle Lewis, Joey Bogdanovich, Leemour Palmer, and Marcia McDonnough.

When Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced the withdrawal of the Disaster Risk Management Act in late March, the Reggae Sumfest Team flew out of the blocks after marking time for a year and a half. We had just under four months to plan and execute a programme that we usually did in at least eight months. The constraint of time we were facing meant we had to be strategic and deliberate in our approach, there would be no time for do overs. Let me say straight up that this has only been possible because

of the enthusiasm and dedication of the members of the team and the unwavering support of our long-time sponsors who quickly committed their support. We also attracted the attention of new sponsors eager to share the Reggae Sumfest experience. The artistes were also ready to get back to live performances, so they signed on very quickly allowing us to announce our lineup in short order. One of the major challenges was the preparation of the venue.

After two years of absolutely no occupation the Catherine Hall Property was, understandably, considerably overgrown with a variety of vegetation and the grounds required a massive cleaning. It took a lot of hard work to get it to the state where we could begin the preparations for the layout of the venue for the two festival nights. As we do for every festival, we are adjusting the layout of the venue to garner more space for the comfort of our patrons and to improve the overall experience we offer.

From the entrance at the gate to the check-in and entry into the main venue, patrons will enjoy expanded spaces, with many more check-in lanes and service personnel to assist with questions and directions. All changes have been designed to ensure a smooth and seamless entry. Once again, we will have two ULTRA VIP PLATFORMS which, for the first time, will offer reserved seating. Patrons now have the ability to select their seats and pay in advance online. In addition, we will offer an exclusive Luxe Lounge, located in a raised area behind the Ultra VIP platforms which will include an array of exotic

and a mouth-watering menu of items, as well as butler services. Our GENERAL FOOD AREA has been extended to comprise three food courts, the main one being the Grace Food Court and then two smaller ones at the top left and right of the venue. This will allow a more efficient flow for patrons and reduce crowding in these areas. THE SUMFEST MALL will, again, showcase the products of a fine selection of artisans and they will be spread along the periphery of the viewing area to provide patrons with easy and direct access to booths. We will also host the TEF ARTISAN VILLAGE which will be close to the entrance of the venue and will showcase several more artisans and craftsmen with truly exceptional Jamaican products.

A word on the

l a u t r i V S how 2020

When it became clear that a live festival would not have been possible in 2020, the Sumfest team pivoted to present Festival Nights 1 and 2 to a global audience of millions on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 July. The two two-hour showcases of talent featured a medley of dancehall and reggae stars and legends including Gyptian, Freddie McGregor, Tarrus Riley, Maxi Priest, Sizzla, Koffee, Sevanna, Chaka Demus and Pliers, Teejay, Shenseea, Ding Dong, Agent Sasco, Ishawna and Daddy I among many others. They all rehearsed assiduously to guarantee their A-game at the show. Care was taken with the physical presentation. Outstanding sets were created as the backdrop for the performances and Jamaica’s top production personnel were brought on board to deliver a world-class event. Our technical and creative personnel are among the best in the world and we curated a show guaranteed to generate excitement and capture unwaning interest from start to finish.

JULY 18-23, 2022 MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

The response to the two nights’ performances that were streamed on TVJ, Youtube, Instagram and Facebook was overwhelming. We had an audience of over three million, most on the nights of the show and then many who continued to watch for weeks after. This virtual festival was facilitated through the support of a dedicated team of people and loyal sponsors including the Jamaica Tourist Board, Mastercard, Flow, Grace Foods, H & L True Value, Phase 3, Martin Lewis, Pepsi, Wray & Nephew White Rum, Magnum, National Commercial Bank, The Gleaner & Star, Barcode, and Pure Country along with newcomers such as Catherine’s Peak, Younis Investments and Zoukie Trucking. The festival aimed to keep reggae and dancehall music top of mind across the globe even as the COVID 19 Pandemic attempted to isolate us.

Welcome to Reggae Sumfest as we celebrate our music, our culture, our Festival at The Return 2022!

green Reggae Sumfest made a commitment to Go Green in 2019. At the time there was a global call for reducing waste and the recycling of plastic. There was also an awareness that large festivals created major waste. The team believed that as the largest festival in Jamaica, it was important to help in spreading the word about protecting our environment.

We realised that this process of going green would be a work in progress over several years and so our objective is that each year we would introduce activities that would move us closer to our goal. Our first action was to introduce a recycling initiative at all festival events with the separation and collection of plastic in 2019. We partnered on this initiative with Recycling Partners of Jamaica (RPJ) who provided invaluable guidance and education. We separated waste and collecting plastic for recycling at the festival events – the Street Dance; All White Party, Blitz, Global Sound Clash and Festival. Patrons are also being encouraged to bring their re-usable cups to the festival which will help to cut down on the use of plastic. Food vendors have been sensitised to ensure that the containers that they use are environmentally friendly. In addition, we hosted our first beach cleanup at the Catherine Hall Beach, the home of Reggae Sumfest in 2019. If everyone does their part, we can help to make sure our island is protected for the future.

We encourage everyone to GO GREEN with Reggae Sumfest.

D O FExOperience

THE REGGAE SUMFEST FOOD EXPERIENCE PRESENTS A FOOD FESTIVAL WITHIN A MUSIC FESTIVAL. Detailed planning goes into providing culinary diversity, good taste, and good service in a pleasant, clean environment. Our Music, our Culture, Our Festival is Reggae Sumfest’s motto and it speaks to the fact the festival creates an ideal platform to showcase Jamaica’s food culture. To ensure the diversity that now symbolises the Jamaican food experience, we pay keen attention to the menus being offered. Each vendor presents their menu for each night and these are vetted before selection and approval for the event. This ensures a variety in the offering with not too much repetition of items. To ensure good taste we engage in tastings for those establishments that are not yet known to us; however, many of our vendors have been part of the Sumfest family for years so we know what they have to offer. A few have even been with the festival from its inception in 1993 and loyal patrons who attend Reggae Sumfest from year to year seek them out to ensure that they get their bite of Jamaican homestyle cooking. There are others that are popular restaurants whose reputation and service precede them, so we have no reason to worry. Overall, our vendors are a mix of traditional, fusion and international cuisine.

JULY 18-23, 2022 MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

A peek at the menus will show Jamaican fare such as curry goat, oxtail, escovietched fish, reindeer, jerk of all types and more. While seafood lovers can look out for lobster, crayfish, roast fish and perhaps conch, among others. For those who just need a snack there will be hot dogs, burgers, sub sandwiches and of course pizza, plus a variety of Indian and other international dishes. Our sweet tooth patrons will not be left out as there will be cakes and other pastries and of course we will provide for vegetarians and vegans. And, of course, soup, soup and more soup. This year three distinct food court areas have been placed around the venue. This increases accessibility for patrons and reduces overcrowding in any one area, which assists in complying with COVID protocols. The Reggae Sumfest food experience will not only delight your palates but will also provide a friendly and welcoming lyming spot, to gather with friends as you take a bite to get ready for the rest of the show.

Come out to Catherine Hall on JULY 23rd to see the MADHOUSE TRIBUTE to DAVE KELLY live and direct! On Saturday 23 July Reggae Sumfest 2022 will pay tribute to the iconic Dave Kelly of Madhouse Records with performances by Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Cham, Wayne Wonder, Spragga Benz, Mr Easy and Frisco Kid and a mystery guest artiste. Kelly is, unarguably, one of the greatest dancehall producers of all time, known for legendary riddims such as Bogle, Arab Attack, Heartbeat, Return, Haunted, Heartbeat, Backyard, Fiesta, 85, Pepperseed, Joyride, Showtime, Fiesta Stink and Rae Rae. Some of the biggest hits on the label were “Action” by Terror Fabulous & Nadine Sutherland, “Sycamore Tree” by Lady Saw, “Dude” by Beenie Man & Ms. Thing, “Slam” by Beenie Man, and “Ghetto Story” by Cham. R e g g a e S u m f e s t p r o d u c e r, J o e Bogdanovich, noted that “the influence of reggae and dancehall music has impacted popular culture worldwide. However, while we consistently showcase our performers, who are the faces of the music, we sometimes overlook the creators of the rhythms and lyrics, the genius behind the stars. Dave Kelly is a giant in dancehall music and it is fitting that we celebrate his greatness and the massive contribution he has made to global popular music culture”.

Tonight is a celebration as we signal to Jamaica and the rest of the world [that] we are ready to welcome our loyal fans, all reggae and dancehall enthusiasts to Montego Bay between July 18 and 23”, Bogdanovich said.
