Dear Boarding Community, Another packed newsletter means there is little space for me to ramble on. So, with half-term upon us and with it, the passing of the half-way point in the academic year, I borrow the words of Janet Rand to highlight an important aspect of learning and growing in our boarding community:

The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, and is nothing. They may avoid suffering and sorrow, but they cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love, live. Chained by their attitudes, they are a slave, they forfeited their freedom. Only the person who risks can be free.

Our community continues to grow as we involve ourselves in all corners of the School, seizing the opportunities that are afforded to us. In order to do this, we sometime expose our weaknesses and our fears.

Let us look back on the first half of this year’s journey with gratitude and a sense of achievement but more importantly let’s look forward with the determination and courage to dream big and to take the necessary risks that may be the start of something very special.

Thank you for another wonderful half-term. Enjoy the well deserved break with friends and family and we look forward to seeing you back soon.

Describe your home town: My hometown is called the Gold Coast. It is a very popular tourist destination in Australia. The theme parks are on the Gold Coast and there is beach everywhere.

We get to know some of our boarding community and their home countries in 60 seconds!

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

The language barrier, especially with the taxi drivers and the heat, it’s a very different heat to home.

My favourite thing is the people and the atmosphere. It feels like one big family.

What do you miss the most about home?

Home cooked meals and how the beach was just 5 minutes away from my house.

What do you love that is unique to Bangkok/Thailand?

The people. Everyone is so friendly and majority of the people here go out of there way to help you.

Brazil

by Boys House Parent Mr. Leorato from Brazil Describe your home town: Joaçaba is a very small town in the middle of the beautiful state of Santa Catarina; it’s one of the best cities in quality of life and life expectation in Brazil.

Most of my life I have lived in Florianópolis city, capital city of Santa Catarina, it is a beautiful island surrounded by stunning beaches. Florianópolis life style is very mixed with busy modern life and very traditional quiet life. Yet where ever you look you can see the influence of Portuguese settlers.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

My biggest challenge so far has been learning Thai language; it took me a couple of months to grasp the basics. Moving from Brazil, the culture of Thailand was a severe shock, yet the beauty and the cultural richness played an important role on my decision in settling here.

What is your favourite thing about your boarding house?

My favorite thing about our Boarding environment is the cultural diversity; sometimes it can be challenging for the children to accept the culture of their

Actually I have been away from home for a long time.

I do miss my family and friends; however I have learnt to adapt and to keep my heart where I am settled.

It was difficult to settle down, but the time helped me filter the vital things in my life and I moved on.

Now the feeling of nostalgia only returns when I think about the important people and things from my past.

What do you love that is unique to Bangkok/Thailand?

I do love Thailand, it’s an amazing place to live and the Thai people are really welcoming and generous.

One of the things that I really like, especially in Bangkok, is the mixed styles of the modern and the traditional and quiet life which some people live.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

My biggest challenge for now is to improve to the next level.

What is your favourite thing about your boarding house?

My favorite thing at boarding house is the people; the boarding parents, the boarding assistants and friends. I also love the basketball court! All of this makes me so happy about the boarding house.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

My toe was frozen while climbing a mountain during winter, that’s my biggest challenge for now.

What is your favourite thing about your boarding house?

I really like the new furniture and living with my friends.

What do you miss the most about home?

I really miss my family and friends in Korea.

What do you love that is unique to Bangkok/Thailand?

People here are nice and the food here is AWESOME!!!!!

CYPRUS

Describe your home town: Having lived in over 20 different ‘homes’ in 8 different countries I consider myself a bit of a nomad.

However, the longest period I have spent anywhere was my childhood years from 6-16 years and these were spent in Cyprus. It is a very special country with a warm climate, friendly people, amazing beaches and yummy ‘Cyprus sandwiches’. I hope to create an upbringing for my children like my own.

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

Where to start.. he he! Without a doubt it was surviving taxi rides with my three energetic children in the Thai heat minus seatbelts and door locks. We now own a car! iWhat is your favourite thing about your boarding house?

My lovely ladies. I so often feel like the ‘nagging

mother’; checking homework, meal attendance, ‘yes you can’, ‘no you can’t’, and it is no secret that teenagers would prefer a life without rules so there will always be challenges and compromises.

However, I am aware of how special these girls are and as I watched them perform at the Christmas Concert I felt extremely proud and emotional – just like a mother would and it is moments like this that make it all worth while.

What do you miss the most about home?

My immediate family are spread far and wide in Gibraltar, Cyprus, Germany, UK, Ecuador and Morocco so family gatherings are few and far between, however, I do miss catching up on Skype as the time differences and intermittent internet here make it really difficult to do that at the moment.

What do you love that is unique to Bangkok/Thailand?

Aside from 3 metre snakes in my garden and the craziest roads in the world, I love the warmth of the Thai people and the fact I feel really safe living here.

the ancient city

by Chimmi Namda from Bhutan The ancient city in Bangkok is a place which embraces all of Thailand’s rich culture, art and heritage. One Saturday morning, our boarding community visited The Ancient City. It was a very peaceful area, full of trees, lakes and traditional Thai temples. When we arrived, we were split into groups and assigned bicycles; this was how we explored the massive area. It was a wonderful ride; we saw several cultural ruins, Buddha’s footprint and even the Dusit Maha Prasat palace. My favourite part was the palace, for it had a unique interior made of glass, gold silver hues and gigantic murals on the wall. All in all, it was an amazing day!

SPIN THE WHEEL

Amongst a few exciting games and perks of being in boarding is our oh-so popular wheel of fortune. It serves as an incentive for the children to go the extra mile-do more. On the wheel are a variety of rewards and prizes to be won however one may only get a chance to spin the wheel when they have gone above and beyond what is expected in the boarding community. To everyone’s delight we have many children who get a chance to spin the wheel and reap the rewards, whether it is house ice cream or a romantic dinner for two in the canteen. It adds an energetic, enthusiastic element to the boarding where the kids can come together and have a laugh as a whole.

A simple touch that is enough to turn around anyone’s day or week even if they are not spinning!

Training to beat the Staff

Our big volleyball competition between staff and boarders is not far away and already all our boarding community is training hard for the victory. Our last training was full of fun and difficult exercises combined.

We are so lucky to have amazing members of the GAP Staff supporting and cheering us up the whole time.

Usually a volleyball session lasts for an hour but all of our sessions are very intense and our improvement starts to show. In my opinion we are in our best shape and could beat the Staff easily. Expectations are high and all of the girls are looking forward to the challenge in March.

On the 1st February our boarding community had the opportunity to spend a fun and relaxing day away from the city life. We headed to the Green Lung of Bangkok, a huge park full of wild life by the Praphadaeng River. There we rented bicycles and just enjoyed the fresh air and beautiful scenery. We also cycled to the near-by floating market, where we had our well-deserved break and a little snack. Then it was already time to head back to the starting point. It was a fun and memorable day definitely worth repeating!

rot fai park - butterfly garden

On Saturday, the boarding community headed to Rot Fai Park, one of the most beautiful and well-known parks in Bangkok. We could decide whether we want to explore the place on foot or on a pink, Hello Kitty bike – since the park was quite large, most people opted for the latter option. There really was a lot to see –the breath-taking butterfly garden in particular attracted many curious boarders, as well as other exciting activities such as kayaking and painting. If you got tired after the long day in the sun, you could just lie down on the grass and relax by reading a book, listening to some good music or chatting to your friends.

Thailand’s largest indoor climbing wall opened its doors recently and 8 young rope guns visited the Rock Domain Centre as part of the Weekend Enrichment Programme to put their climbing skills to the test.

The 3 hour session was split into 4 parts.

Firstly – Safety. Learning very simple procedures was key to a safe and enjoyable day. The group learnt quickly.

Secondly - Movement. Since climbing is largely about technique, it was important to point out that strength, although important, would fade quickly if relied upon from the word GO! Thirdly – Top Roping and Belaying. The core to indoor climbing. Pick a route, follow the coloured holds and hold on. It’s harder than it looks. Good teamwork is required to get each pair to the top and back down safely.

Fourthly – The Bouldering Wall. This is where power (and footwork) are everything. Pulling your own body weight up on steep overhanging walls is hard work but also great fun with exhausted bodies crashing into the thick pads below. Boyka and Mr Anurag proved to be the most powerful, completing the upside down traverse in style.

THE BAKING BOARDERS

by claudia kiitsak from estonia On every Wednesday we have Spin-The-Wheel in the girl’s boarding house. That means that 2 people who have done something well or remarkable get to spin a wheel with prizes varying from breakfast in bed to free pizza or a house ice-cream.

I was lucky enough to win a candlelit dinner for being so positive and I decided to spend it with one of my best friends Florence. The dinner took place in the canteen where the usual dinner was served to us at a VIP table that was decorated appropriately. The evening went nice and I am very pleased with my prize.

Our Support Staff are remarkable and work hard every day to support the boarding routine. That said, one of our younger boarders would rather do things his own way. Watch this space, when KP passes his test, he vows to drive us to school....to help us out!

It is one of those nights again; the ovens are being tested to the max, there is icing everywhere, the mixers are on full blast and the boarding house is filled with delicious aromas of chocolate cake. It is baking time in Queen Mary’s boarding house and it is quite simply one impressive, slick operation with not any of the usual baking rewards of consumption afterwards!

I have girls with energy, enthusiasm and recipes in this house that work relentlessly all in the aid of charity to make our bake sales something ‘special’ and more importantly successful. At least every few weeks the girls return from Prep in the evening and set to work on their creations. Challenges posed by ‘oven overload’ that results in power cuts or special ingredients not available in Thailand are all overcome as they work harmoniously to get the job done. A few hours later and ‘Voila’ trays of cupcakes, biscuits and sometimes unidentified objects are prepared ready to make their way downstairs and onto the school buses to be sold at school the following day.

These bake sales are a mammoth task from start to finish and the dedication starts well before they attack the kitchen. It is often a team effort as we plan ways of getting the girls to shops to buy the ingredients around a busy school schedule. There is also the ‘clean up’ afterwards which is no small undertaking as they put the kitchen back together and every now and then there is a little mishap; for instance, the panic stricken phone call to Mrs Wadsworth to rescue the two trays of ‘Estonian Delight’ forgotten on the top shelf of the fridge that had to be rushed in an emergency to school in time!

The girls have baked endless times to raise money for Habitat for Humanity, a project to raise money for building a house in Rayong and they have baked for World Peace and HIV days, on every occasion raising a significant amount of money for the charities. Their dedication is impressive and selfless and they make me proud to be part of their team. Embracing the ‘Service’ element of the Round Square IDEALS they certainly set the standard and make us all realise that there is ‘more in us than we know’.

a great football match

We went to play football against AFA on Saturday the 8th. The entertainment began when we first entered the mysterious gates of Ascot Football Academy. The Ascot players were very kind and respectful towards us. The start of the game was promising and our passing skills did not let ourselves down but in the end we lost 8 - 1, which indicated that we should step up our game. We all truly enjoyed the match and the experience of playing with professional players. We all are hoping to have a rematch in the near future to come back with better results.

On the 5th of Feb 2014 I left South Africa to start the adventure of a lifetime. I had no idea what to expect, no idea what it looked like or the kind of people I would meet, the only thing I knew was that I was going to an international school called The Regents in Bangkok for two months. The minute I got here I was welcomed

by Mr. Green and a bustling city, this was also the first time I had ever been in a taxi. Ingot to the boarding house and my adventure began. I met the most diverse, bubbly and friendly group of people who welcomed me with no trouble and I am so incredibly grateful for that.

I haven’t even been here a week and yet my days have been jam packed with the newest and craziest things I cannot wait to see what the remaining two months have in store for me!

We are boarders at the Regent’s School Bangkok. Every week we enjoy going home but this weekend was very special because we went ice-skating. Although we were the only girls we loved going there, we really enjoy ice-skating. It was a memorable experience for us and we were able to make some friends. After skating for an hour we did some shopping and had something to eat. If there is another trip like this we are sure that we will go. It was a very good weekend at the boarding house.

Living in a multicultural environment

Building a community is demanding and we need to be present to others, attentive to them, able to listen and give our time. Living together we support each other, facing the challenges that life presents to us. In our community a sense of humor is indispensable and it is a wonderful gift which helps us to bear with ourselves and companions lightly and to face the ups and downs of the life together with joyful spirit. Being part of our community we have the responsibility of make people happy, not in the sense of hilarity, but in the deep feeling of contentment experienced by people who have meaning and purpose in their life and good companions with whom to share that life.

It is also true that whenever different people live together richness and struggles will appear, however the Round Square way of life keeps our community united. We develop meaningful relationships and assure our consistent presence within our community, thus the experience respecting and being respected become part of our ordinary moments of our daily life.

Communication is Crucial by mrs. wadsworth from the uk

All the boarders in The Regents Boarding community attend Prep 4 times a week. For those who don’t know, Prep is a compulsory activity in which the students are given the time, support and space to do their set homework. Prep is very useful because we only concentrate on our work for an hour, if you are a Junior, or two if you are a Senior; you have a set amount of time to do your homework which helps you develop time management skills and prioritizing your tasks. Overall I enjoy Prep because usually I would not push myself to do my homework as much as I do it here. Prep has helped me a lot and I feel like my time management and prioritizing skills have improved immensely.

As most of you know, I come from a military background and this training has been perfect for my current role. Raising my voice on a morning to ensure that everyone makes the departing bus on time or coping with sleep deprivation as I battle being a mother of three young children, whilst living with over twenty teenage girls, all come quite naturally. However, I think the lessons that Army taught me about the importance of communication were perhaps the most valuable.

Communication is so crucial to boarding as there are so many different parties working to together to help things run smoothly. House Parents also work closely with the school staff to monitor the progress of students and weekly checks of homework dairies allows us to achieve this and identify problems early on. It is an important relationship between the staff and us and we liaise with Mentor Tutors to make sure we are both aware of any challenges from either an academic or pastoral perspective. We have a school councellor too who is always on hand to offer additional support should we require it.

Whilst there are obvious hurdles to communicating with parents when you do not speak the same language, I believe that ‘where there is a will there is a way’! That said, we do adhere to Walt Disney’s belief that “Of all of our intentions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language” and hope that our newsletters speak for themselves. Communicating with the girls that live locally is far easier and I try to interact with the parents as much as possible when they collect and drop them off.

Having not actually met many of my boarder’s parents we have to rely on email and often the linguistic skills of the girls themselves. Parents have such valuable information about how their child is feeling that I urge any parents reading this to get in touch and do not ever hesitate to get in contact with any concerns, no matter how small they may seem. Clear, open lines of communication are beneficial to everyone. Let’s keep talking!
