Flick through the pages that follow and you will see a community in full flow, balancing wide ranging experiences, challenges, events and initiatives. This term we have continued the theme of experiences for life and you can see by the smiles on the faces of those brave enough to be captured, we had a lot of fun in the process.

Highlights for me include our Boarding Sleepover and our Service Initiatives. These were important events because they pulled us together as a community and allowed us to experience a number of emotions in a short space of time. These will be the memories that stay with us for quite some time.

As is always the case at this time of year, we say farewell to our IB leavers and others who will not return in August. We were very sad to see them leave but know that their journey would have been enriched by spending some time here and that as one door closes, another opens. We will miss them all enormously and wish them all the very best with their future endeavours.

The time has also come for me to say farewell. Kerri and I return to the UK to be reunited with family and friends. We are of course excited at what lies ahead but will always look back on the past two years with great fondness and with a smile. We are both very grateful for the support and kindness that has been given to us by so many people, boarders, staff and parents and our door is always open should anyone be passing through England’s Lake District. Just remember to bring a raincoat and an umbrella!

Thank you to everyone who contributes to our Boarding community and I hope everyone enjoys a peaceful and safe summer holiday in the sun.

BOARDING LIFE THE BIG BOARDING SLEEPOVER

Just recently, the Regent’s boarding community opened its doors and welcomed day students from Year 5 to Year 8 to come and spend a night with us to find out how much fun boarding can be. Expecting a small turnout we were overjoyed to have over 40 students join us for an afternoon of activities and a barbecue in the evening.

Boarding students were ‘buddied up’ with the visitors and they served as excellent hosts, taking care of their students until they returned home the next morning.

The programme was action packed and everyone played water games, water volleyball and football before enjoying an ‘al fresco’ barbeque on the sports field.

BOARDING LIFE

It was a surprisingly early night for everyone. The boys enjoyed using the pool table and table football facilities in a kind of pyjama party style and the girls enjoyed an evening chatting with their friends and telling Mrs Wadsworth all sorts of stories! What was even more surprising was the early start the next day. The Boarding house was ‘alive’ by 6 am as there were groups on the football field and badminton matches underway.

Breakfast was followed by a series of games played in mixed teams such as a quiz, ‘minute to win it’ challenges and paper plane throwing. Day students were then collected by their families and we was confronted by many a student ‘asking when can we do this again!’ as they left. The behaviour of everyone involved was impeccable and it was such a rewarding experience for both staff and students and a great way to integrate our communities, meaning that everyone will be looking forward to doing all over again next year.

I will have a gap year in Bhutan, and then go to university. Not sure where yet!

What will you be doing in 10 years?

In 10 years - I hope to be satisfied and content with whatever I decide to pursue.

Hopefully helping to better things. I want to be in a job I love, with a family and be happy!

I will miss the people, the wonderful and confusing people I have come across the culture variety and varying perspectives…and boarding!

Travel around Thailand and Indonesia, and then take a Gap year in Australia.

People I came to know, the atmosphere of it and the overall feeling of looking forward to new experiences and attaining knowledge.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson What advice do you have for younger boarders?

Start studying NOW because that makes it easier in the future and it helps to keep you busy and overcome homesickness. Also don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

What are you going to do during your first year after Regent’s?

Taking a gap year in Thailand, Nepal and Afghanistan mainly based on working with communities.

What do you think you’ll be doing in 10 years?

I don’t know.

What is your personal motto?

Practice makes perfect but then again ... nobody is perfect so why practice?

What are you going to miss about school?

People at school and in the boarding house most.

Someone famous who you admire most?

From school Mr. Curran: I‘ve never met such an outstanding chemistry teacher before in my entire life.

What advice do you have to younger boarders?

Have a diary or any other neat schedule of your choice to keep you on track. It makes your personal and particularly school life easier.

MICHELLE

What next after Regents?

I want to relax and travel around Thailand; visit Indonesia for a couple weeks and enjoy what Thailand has to offer before further study.

What will you be doing in 10 years?

Hopefully I’ll have a job that I enjoy (and that pays well!) Honestly I have no plan, I think I’ll just wing it :) Favourite movie?

Definitely Cloud Atlas. 5 plots intertwining accompanied by breath-taking music... must watch!

What is your personal motto?

Hakuna Matata What are you going to miss about school?

Might sound ironic, I think I’ll actually miss studying and the atmosphere Regent’s has. Teachers are encouraging and you know they’re there for you and your classmates are like a family. I’ll miss them dearly, along with the boarders.

Someone famous you admire most?

Probably Ed Sheeran - he is the personification of ‘started from the bottom now we’re here.’ He had a big dream and made it come true despite the odds. Very talented yet very humble.

What advice do you have for younger boarders?

Make the most out of the opportunities boarding provides. Although it might sometimes feel a bit restraining, you have your friends around you all the time.

You are surrounded by a new family that loves you and cares for you. Make the most out of it!

“It was a fun night that went very late.

The food was really tasty and there was lots of socialising and chatting. It was sad because it was some of the IB’s last day and I didn’t like saying goodbye to them”.

A TIME OF CHANGE I have to admit that I promised the girls who were not here last year, when we started this term that the time would ‘fly’ by, and whilst some weeks have happened before we have known it, the exams have seen them all work really hard so I do have a lot of tired boarders on my hands who are very much looking forward to their holidays and long lieins! Sadly, our Year 13s have long since departed. Having survived the IB, they set off in their separate ways and the house certainly feels different (and quiet!) without them. Fortunately, we were able to organise a final farewell BBQ after their exams and it was nice to see them relaxed and smiling again!

The Senior Social was also a wonderful night, with over half of the girls’ boarding house able to attend this year. Preparation commenced weeks in advance with the purchase of dresses and hairstyle planning. We even had high heel walking practices led by the more experienced girls – despite my efforts to convince them that flat shoes are the way forward!

Having endured their month long exam timetable, our lovely Year 11 girls have also left, and they too are already terribly missed. However, we have had some super new additions to the girl’s house since April; namely Lita from Cambodia, Shanshan from China and Chompu from Thailand and our Year 12 boarders have already risen to the occasion and taken on the ‘big sister role’.

Sadly we say a few more farewells next week as some of our boarders head off to ‘pastures new’ and we wish Eva the best of luck in Canada and hope that Meeri enjoys Hong Kong. Our amazing Boarding Assistant, Odyssa Gavino has also decided to return to her native Philippines, to be closer to her new niece. She has been an extraordinary colleague, friend, mother figure, hairdresser, nurse, demon badminton player to name but a few, to all of us in the house and we just hope she comes back and visits soon.

As many of you are aware, it is also time for me to move on and return to UK to be closer to family whilst my children are still young. I have been privileged to do a lot of travelling in my life, so I am well practiced at saying ‘Hello’ and waving ‘Goodbye’, but unfortunately it does not get any easier. I have met some exceptional people and have spent two magnificent years of my life in a wonderful country. My mother always tries to ease the pain at each move for me by quoting Dr Seuss ‘Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it has happened’. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making our stay here so special, I will treasure the memories forever.

Every cloud has a silver lining and I am delighted to tell you that Mrs Tamsin Harrison, from the UK, will be replacing me in the summer, moving in with her husband and two children. I am confident that they will move the house forward to bigger and better things and that there are exciting times ahead for my super girls.

HOUSE COMMITTEE

The Boarding house committee is composed of Kim, Jeong Woo, Crystal, Eva, Lhaki, Ugyen and Phoom. The Boarding committee represents boarder’s opinions, and we try to help them to have a better boarding life. Our first task was asking about food to have better meals. We made a questionnaire and gave it out to boarders. We gathered some useful information. Some of ideas are already performed, and also we’ll suggest ideas to boarding House Parents. -Jeong Jeongwoo This term I joined the house committee and I think we’ve made a big difference. We have tried to change the food. I think being in the house committee will make me more responsible and make me take charge of things.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT ACTIVITIES On a weekly basis the boarders are given the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities, where they can interact either creatively or through sports. This is essential in both breaking up the week, allowing them to interact with each other and have a really fun time. This term we’ve had games of Ultimate Frisbee, the ever popular Dodgeball, clay making, UNO and puzzles.

It’s good in making everyone try things that they haven’t before and either get sweaty or get creative!

SINGING WORKSHOP

We had the singing workshop, where we tried out a lot of fun things. First we were just singing our names in different notes. Then we chose songs really popular and well known. We started harmonizing them and adding bits in, which was really interesting and fun. It was really nice to hear to its recording in the end, and I had a really good day.

NEWS IN A NEW LOOK Recently, the Boarders found something different on the canteen tables. Little newsstands inform about what happened lately, updates on school and Boarding activities and lots of fun and interesting things like the Boarder’s “Playlist of the week”, movie and book reviews or pictures and quotes to think about. We hope these spice up the breakfast experience a bit for those who like to read while eating or want to catch up with the latest news.

LIFE`S JOURNEY 2015 It has been a pleasure to work with the Regent`s Boarding Community during this year. We all have much to be thankful for during this successful year as we reach the final week. Particular thanks goes to those who have left or will leave this community in the next 2 weeks or so. We have had great challenges but have had the pleasure of forging even greater companions who have supported each other in the course of the year. The many events we have organised and worked through are reality of the community work and the unlimited efforts everyone has put together. Our Year 13 and 11 who have done a great job during their exam period deserve a special mention and we wish them the very best of luck as they take on the brave new world, we will be always here for you, please stay in touch.

I wish everyone a great summer holiday and a safe trip home, enjoy the your families warm presence and next year come back ready for more great adventures.

SENIOR SOCIAL

The Senior Social, which was held on the 23rd of May, was a wonderful way to say farewell to the Year 13s and a nice opportunity for everyone to dress to impress! The food, the videos that were put together by the Year 13s and the wonderful dances by the teachers all made the night such a success. The overall atmosphere of the night was really fun and it was clear that everyone had a great time.

ENRICHMENT SPONSORING A CHILD AS A BOARDING COMMUNITY As a part of the Roundsquare Ideal “Service” the Boarding community decided to take action and change the life of an underprivileged Thai child. Through the charity organization “Thai Childdren’s Trust” it’s possible to ensure a poor, HIVaffected or orphaned child’s food, education and health care for one year with around 11.000 Thai Baht.

This means a yearly contribution of up to 300 Baht for every member of the Boarding community, because everyone decided to participate in the sponsorship and take the great opportunity to make a huge difference in a child’s life. The sponsored child is being looked after in an orphanage or day care centre in Thailand and it would be great to welcome it to our Boarding house one day.

A NIGHT OF REMEMBRANCE

On 14th April 2015, the Armenian students from the boarding house were kindly invited to honour the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide. A solemn and respectful dinner was held in order to pay tribute to their heritage and to honour those that lost their lives in tragic circumstances, helping to shape Armenia into the country that it is today. Due to the magnitude that this impact had on the remaining Armenian population this event holds a great deal of importance to Armenians worldwide, even a century later.

Despite the somber reason for the event, the atmosphere was welcoming and it was a wonderful opportunity for our boarders to meet fellow Armenians living in Thailand and to enjoy some Armenian taste bud sensations!

BOARDERS EXPLORE THE ANCIENT CITY

OF BOARDERS AND SUPERHEROES

At the 2nd of May an exited group of Superhero-fans left the boarding house, keen to see the brand-new and action filled movie “Avengers, Age of Ultron” at Esplanade Movie Theatre. Arriving at the cinema, everybody equipped himself or herself with loads of popcorn, snacks and cola (of course in Avenger themed, limited edition Cups) and headed into the showroom that was packed with eager Marvel fans.

“I would recommend this awesome movie to everybody. It was absolutely amazing” commented Kim, a real marvel expert from year 10.

To round up a great evening the group later debated the movie while enjoying some excellent seafood at a nearby restaurant.

SERVICE WEEKEND

The weekend of the 15th of May was certainly filled with loads of activity and action. Not only due to the great Boarding sleepover organised on Friday but also because of the arrival of a group of toddlers from the Sanuk Nursery in Asok the following day.

On this Saturday the boarders took responsibility for the children and supervised their activities. A swim and play session in the pool was followed by some creative work, in which both boarders and toddlers were fully engaged in. After that fun packed day ended, everybody happily used the afternoon to relax in the coffee shop nearby boarding.

THE WIZARD OF OZ

Uygen- “We didn’t actually expect a lot of people to turn up, but there was a good turn up. It was a very fun experience and it was fun being the wicked witch even though it didn’t suit me.”

Lani- “It was a learning experience, and my confidence really shot up. It was a good production and it went awesome!”

Kuenze- “It was really fun. I played the visiting witch and I liked it. I’m glad I participated because I think it was worthwhile.”

CHELSEA COME TO BANGKOK

Regent`s boarding boys and girls went to see Thailand and Chelsea on 30th of May with Mr. Leorato.

It was a wonderful experience as we all got a chance to see the professional football players play football. For some it was their first time seeing football superstars in person.

The match ended 1-0 as Chelsea scored the only goal. It was thoroughly entertaining and uplifting.

At the end we enjoyed the night and we hope to get more of these experiences.

TRIP TO LUMPINI

We had a great fun, exciting and great adventure outdoor day. It was fun being out in fresh air eating food outdoor (picnic.) If there is another trip I would definitely go again. It was fun walking along the sidewalk seeing beautiful birds and big lizards walking along too. There was a big pond in the center and a stall to rent a boat to paddle across the pond.

SPORTS NINE WEEK CHALLENGE

One of the new initiatives this term in the girls’ boarding house was the nine week fitness challenge. Despite the various areas of studies and school commitments that the girls had, a large number of them dedicated themselves to exercising for twenty minutes, three times week for nine weeks. This enthusiasm to remaining healthy and active is a wonderful example of the dedication and resilience that our boarders persistently show. It was especially encouraging to see how eager the students were - even if they had exams! - with following through with this challenge. The girls overall positivity and them striving for their own personal best was a commendation to themselves!

TENNIS

Tennis was a very fun and exciting activity in which students were able to get active on their weekend. This weekend activity was very enjoyable and all students who attended were able to laugh and get in involved. Lita, new student from Cambodia commented, “It was great fun learning something new during my first week here. I had a great time with everyone.”

THE BOARDING BADMINTON TOURNAMENT It was a spontaneous, yet well-organised competition which brought all of us together. The air was full of excitement and loud cheers! It was a passionate and heated event, and at the same time, very fulfilling. Though my team didn’t win, it was worth every moment!

THE KHUN TU CUP Chad: “It was great experience that I played with different nationality people and it was awesome time i enjoyed a lot.”

Woo: “Khun Tu’s Cup is always fun experience for me. I want to have this kind of match again.”

Mitsu: “I am so grateful that I played last football with amazing people in Regents and i will never forget the time that we played football together.”
