Director: Rupert Everett Starring: Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, Colin Morgan, Edwin Thomas, Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson Release:Â October 5, 2018 In a few words: contemplative, thought provoking

As Oscar Wilde lies on his death bed in a cheap, Parisian hotel room, thoughts of his past transport him to other times and places. Was he once the most famous man in London? The artist crucified by a society that once worshipped him? The lover imprisoned and freed, yet still running toward ruin in the final chapter of his life? Under the microscope of death, he reviews the failed attempt to reconcile with his long-suffering wife Constance, the ensuing reprisal of his fatal love affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, and the warmth and devotion of Robbie Ross, who tried and failed to save him from himself. From Dieppe to Naples to Paris, freedom is elusive. Oscar is a penniless, sharp-witted vagabond, always moving on, shunned by his old acquaintances, but revered by a strange group of outlaws and urchins to whom he tells the old stories. This film is a portrait of the dark side of a genius, who lived and died for love in the last days of the 19th century.

From the creative mind of Oscar® nominee Steven Knight comes a daringly original, sexy, stylized thriller. Baker Dill (Academy Award® winner Matthew McConaughey) is a fishing boat captain leading tours off a tranquil, tropical enclave called Plymouth Island. His quiet life is shattered, however, when his ex-wife Karen (Academy Award® winner Anne Hathaway) tracks him down with a desperate plea for help. She begs Dill to save her and their young son from her new, violent husband (Jason Clarke) by taking him out to sea on a fishing excursion to throw him to the sharks and leave him for dead. Karen’s appearance thrusts Dill back into a life he’d tried to forget, and as he struggles between right and wrong, his world is plunged into a new reality that may not be all that it seems.

BASED ON A TRUE STORY

Director: Matthew Heineman

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR:

Starring: Rosamund Pike, Jamie Dornan, Stanley Tucci

We seem to be living in a post-truth era, where facts are often traded for blatant falsehoods as dictators, terrorists and politicians alike utilize propaganda for personal gain. The devastating result is that people often don’t know who or what to believe. Facts seem to be malleable. Journalism is under attack and becoming increasingly polarized with fabricated “news” masquerading as real journalism.

Release: November 2, 2018 In a few words: highly anticipated awards contender

Deeply concerned by the threats this poses to society, I became inspired to make A Private War about legendary, war correspondent Marie Colvin. One of the most-celebrated journalists of our time, Colvin was an utterly fearless and rebellious spirit, prepared to take enormous risks to get a story.

She was steely under fire, but what truly set her apart, more than anything else, was her deep desire to bear witness, to show the true human suffering caused by war. Her mission, in her own words, was to “speak truth to power.” She wanted the world to care about unspeakable atrocities, that are so often kept at arms length, as much as she did. But in doing so, she was deeply affected by the horrors that she documented, and her personal life slowly began to spiral out of control. Some say war reporters become addicted to war, she was no exception. It was a drug that she couldn’t escape. War, paradoxically, was often her sanctuary. A Private War is my first narrative film. To this point, I have made documentaries on a variety of topics, ranging from a group of vigilantes who rose up to fight against the Mexican drug cartels to citizen-journalists documenting the horrors that ISIS was committing in their home town in Syria. To a far lesser degree than Colvin, I have felt that same bizarre thrill that war brings and the dark thoughts that accompany it. For me, A Private War is a love letter to journalism and an homage to Colvin, who risked her life time and time again fighting to tell hard truths—and hoping the world would care. 2018 Cannes Film Festival Written by: Derek Sante & Aleex Conner

For more than 70 years, the French Riviera has been filled to the brim at the Festival de Cannes as cinema enthusiasts display intense curiosity about what’s new in the film industry’s competition between box office sales and cinema d’art. This event originally started in the 1930s with the vision of a European festival that welcomed all, including Hollywood, but plans were stopped short by the German army’s invasion of Poland and Europe. Finding its footing again at the end of the 1940s, the festival established a new artistic voice that accepted art over politics, religion and cinematic preconceptions about what made a film notable. Hollywood’s presence didn’t strongly emerge until the 1970s, when directors like Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola made their voices heard with the landmark films MASH, Taxi Driver and Apocalypse Now, respectively. Examples of other names that impacted the film industry include Steven Soderbergh’s Sex, Lies and Videotape and Quentin Tarantino’s unforgettable Pulp Fiction. Viewers experienced great anticipation to see what boundaries might be broken as this year’s Festival de Cannes unveiled films from around the world. Of particular concern was making sure that Netflix and other streaming cinema were excluded from competing in the festival. The influence of the #MeToo and Time’s Up Movement, which elevated global consciousness about the personal and professional obstacles women encounter, is clearly seen as many films feature strong-willed women portrayed by actors such as Cate Blanchett, Ava DuVernay, Kristin Stewart and Khadja Nin.

The true stars of the Festival de Cannes were the films themselves, each with a uniqueness of their own and many with direct, unexpected messages. Under the Silver Lake is one of these films, surreal and mysterious with a hint of passion. Andrew Garfield leads the film as Sam, a nerd thriving on pop culture, alcohol and a lack of ambition. East Los Angeles becomes a dark and magical rabbit hole for him as he unravels a mystery while chasing the girl.

Walking away from the festival with critical praise and the Grand Prix award was Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. Set in the 1970s, this film follows AfricanAmerican police detective Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) as he launches an undercover operation to investigate the Ku Klux Klan and its Grand Wizard David Duke (Topher Grace). Assisting in the investigation is Stallworth’s Jewish partner Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), who is recruited to go undercover and be the face needed to make inroads. Viewers can expect both subtle and blaring messages from excellent performances by the cast and a jump at the end of the film to the 2017 deadly, white-nationalists’ riot in Charlottesville, VA. The story is well-timed with current racial issues as Spike Lee ties the inequality of the past to present-day mistakes and current situations.

Everybody Knows (Todos lo saben), directed by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi and shot in Spanish, follows Laura (Penelope Cruz) after she returns to Spain for a wedding. Bringing her daughter and son with her strengthens familial bonds, while the question of why she left her husband behind looms in the background. Family friend Paco (Javier Bardem) enters as a successful, married winemaker with a smile on his face and eyes for Laura. Unresolved feelings, that have laid dormant for many years, resurface and generate great angst. Drama unfolds as rebellious youth enter the scene causing great distress for Laura when her daughter mysteriously vanishes. Coupled with suspense as tension ebbs and flows is the realization that everyone does not have the best interests of all involved as a priority. As the title suggests, everybody knows, but who is trustworthy and how do you decide if what you are told is really true? Always a star-studded and exciting event, the Festival de Cannes generates lively discussion about how new films will be received, which ones will have the best shock value and what new stars will be unveiled. The festival regularly captures headlines with statements made by celebrities and directors from around the world regarding their beliefs, gender issues or other current topics of interest. Through this world stage for film premieres, many are hoping for films that stir their emotions or reveal new insights that will have a positive impact on their lives.

Director: Ethan Hawke Starring: Benjamin Dickey, Alia Shawkat, Josh Hamilton, Charlie Sexton Release: August 17, 2018 In a few words: music, love, challenges, life’s lasting impact

Fourteen-year-old Joe is the only child of Jeanette and Jerry, a housewife and a golf pro, in a small town in 1960s Montana. Nearby, an uncontrolled forest fire rages close to the Canadian border, and when Jerry loses his job and his sense of purpose, he decides to join the cause of fighting the fire, leaving his wife and son to fend for themselves. Suddenly forced into the role of an adult, Joe witnesses his mother’s struggle as she tries to keep her head above water.

This film is inspired by the life of Blaze Foley, the unsung songwriting legend of the Texas-outlaw music movement that spawned the likes of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. The film weaves together three different periods of time, braiding re-imagined versions of Blaze’s past, present and future. The different strands explore his love affair with Sybil Rosen, his last, dark night on earth and the impact his songs and death had on his fans, friends and foes. The intertwined storyline terminates in a bittersweet ending that acknowledges Blaze’s profound highs and lows as well as the impressions he made on the people who shared his journey.

Maria by Callas Directed by: Tom Volf Starring: Maria Callas, Aristotle Onassis, Joyce DiDonato Release: October 26, 2018 In a few words: remarkable, riveting, glorious music

Tom Volf’s Maria by Callas is the first film to tell the life story of the legendary, Greek/American opera singer completely in her own words. Told through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs, nearly all of which have never been shown to the public, this film reveals the essence of an extraordinary woman, who rose from humble beginnings in New York City to become a glamorous, international superstar and one of the greatest artists of all time. It took four years of painstaking research for Volf to assemble the materials for this film. He personally contacted dozens of Callas’s closest friends and associates, who allowed him to share their personal memorabilia in the film. When recordings of Callas’s voice aren’t available, Joyce DiDonato, one of contemporary opera’s biggest stars, reads her words.

26

Regal Film Guide

Callas believed that two different women lived in her: Maria, the woman who longed for a normal life, and Callas, the public figure and icon, from whom an adoring public expected a transcendent experience every time she stepped onstage and could quickly become outraged when they felt she had given them anything less. Through Volf’s intimate portrait of Callas, we see that some commonly held beliefs about Callas, notably her reputation as a “tempestuous” diva, have no basis in fact. Maria by Callas revisits many of the most notable controversies of Callas’s life, from the “Rome Cancellation” to her conflict with the Metropolitan Opera’s Rudolf Bing, and demonstrates that while Callas was a demanding perfectionist, she was neither capricious nor someone who made trouble for its own sake. The film also sheds new light on Callas’s relationship with Aristotle Onassis, the supreme love of her life.

Instead of trying to sum up her vast, musical repertoire through countless clips, Volf presents some of her most important arias in their entirety. Each aria is chosen for its significance during the period of her life when Callas sang them. These arias include “Casta Diva” (“Norma”), “Love is a Rebellious Bird” (“Carmen”) and “I Lived for Art, I Lived for Love” (“Tosca”). Through hearing these full versions of Callas’s performances, the audience is able to experience a direct, unmediated response to her music.

Inside perspective from director Tom Volf Because there are no opera experts in the film to explain Callas’s unique gifts as a singer, each member of the audience must make his/her own judgment by listening to her. “You don’t need, and this is my deep belief, any expert, or so-called expert or music critic to tell you she was great,” says Volf. “I thought that if I would be able to make the film in a way that the audience understands from their own feelings and their own minds and hearts how great she was, then I would have fulfilled my mission.” As Callas told Frost: “If someone really tries to listen to me, he will find all of myself there.” The idea that Maria’s truth as a human being is revealed through her art is what prompted Volf to call the film Maria by Callas rather than Callas By Maria.

Felicity Jones is a brilliant actress who has the ability to go deep into a person’s world with great authenticity. Her character work is profound. I knew she was right for the role because she possesses an honesty, strength and power not unlike Justice Ginsburg. She is also a feminist and therefore had a deep understanding of what it felt like to step into those shoes. Can you tell us about the transformation you witnessed in the United Kingdom-born Felicity and her process in finding the Brooklyn-born Ruth?

AN INTERVIEW WITH DIRECTOR MIMI LEDER Before starting production, were you familiar with the life and career of Ruth Bader Ginsburg? I was familiar with Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s brilliant and groundbreaking work that changed the landscape of women’s rights and equal opportunities under the law. RBG has been a hero to us all, but I never knew much about who she was as a person. It wasn’t until I began working on the film that I discovered what she valued most—the truth, what is worth standing up for, and Marty Ginsburg, her loving husband or as she called him, “her life partner.” Family was something RBG cherished deeply, inspiring much of her work as an educator, lawyer and Supreme Court Justice fighting against gender discrimination. What was it about Felicity Jones that made you know she was right for the role?

28

Regal Film Guide

The sound of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s voice was something Felicity and I discussed at great length. We weren’t making a documentary, and we certainly did not want to insert a lifetime of experience into the body of a young woman. Until we began our research, none of us knew who the 23-year-old RBG was, let alone what she sounded like. So it was important that Felicity bring her own voice and vulnerabilities to the role to make RBG accessible. What we can glean from pictures is one thing, but in talking to RBG about her memories, we were able to piece together the moments that defined her. A woman who, when her husband got cancer, not only took her own law classes at Harvard, but took his classes as well, all while raising her one-year-old daughter. Finding the essence of RBG at this critical point in her life was key, the way she carried herself, the way she sat and the way she expressed herself. With gender discrimination and movements at the forefront of today’s culture, how important is this story to people living in the echoes of its history? I think it’s safe to say that the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the ultimate example of how change happens. The civil rights movements of today champion the same principle that she fought (and fights) for so tirelessly: all people are entitled to equal status and protection under the law. In 1956, RBG was one of nine women in her law school class of over 500. In 2016, the number of women enrolled in law school surpassed the number of men in the United States. She taught us that representation matters, and there is no doubt that our society benefits from the inclusion of all our voices in our justice system. Remembering her story not only keeps us from forgetting

rights movement in the early 1920s. I wanted the Griswold character to possess the qualities of a man who held deep beliefs in what he felt America stood for. Sam Waterston filled those shoes beautifully. He brought compassion to a role that could have otherwise become a one-dimensional stereotype. I’ve always loved Jack Reynor since I saw him in Sing Street, and he just had to be in the movie.

our past, but also reminds us of our responsibility to each other in the present. Many audiences may only see the people in this story as robed figures on a pedestal. How does this film give heart and history to those that give definition to our laws? We are a nation of laws, but we are also a nation of individuals. On the Basis of Sex gives us a rare look into the strategic course Ruth Bader Ginsburg charted, taking aim at specific discriminatory statutes and choosing her plaintiffs carefully, demonstrating that gender discrimination was harmful to women and men. It reveals not just the skills and legal expertise RBG possessed, but the passion she applied to finding a path forward to change the prevalent notion that women needed to be dependent on men. As director of the ACLU’s Women’s Rights Project, RBG ultimately argued six, gender discrimination cases before the Supreme Court between 1973 and 1976, winning five. But her stance on equality was also a direct reflection of how she lived her life in her equal partnership and loving marriage with Marty Ginsburg. In seeing the young RBG undaunted and determined, we are reminded that our justices are ultimately citizens with dogged determination to follow a higher purpose. This original story reveals the history— personal and professional—that molded RBG into the revered and respected Supreme Court leader we see today.

When filling out the supporting cast around Felicity, what kind of aspects or qualities were you looking for? Everyone we cast in this film really wanted to be a part of the project, and to begin with that as a director is an extremely fortunate thing, especially when tackling the life of a national treasure. And I can say confidently that the entire cast each had a personal reason to be a part of this project. It was a magical cast. The first step was to find our Marty Ginsburg, who became one of the preeminent tax attorneys in the country. Marty had a great sense of humor, was full of life, incredibly charming and he could cook. He was the love of her life and her greatest supporter. The person I felt who possessed those qualities most was the one and only Armie Hammer. Armie brought a reality and great depth to the role. In getting to know him, I saw that Armie had a great connectivity to the kind of man Marty was. He’s a great actor. For the Mel Wulf character, the only person I thought of was the exceptional, extraordinary and brilliant Justin Theroux. He filled the shoes of the real-life Mel Wulf with unapologetic swagger and honesty. Kathy Bates is an actor I’ve wanted to work with for a long time. I have such great respect for her body of work. She brought a strength, power and a supreme reality to Dorothy Kenyon, who was at the forefront of the women’s

I had a lot of fear about not finding the right person to play Jane, RBG’s daughter. I wanted to find a young woman who embodied her mother’s DNA but someone who came of age in the protest movements of the ’60s and early ’70s. Jane learned from her mother. She needed to represent the next generation of women, who stood up for what was right. Vickie Thomas, our casting director, went on the hunt and found Cailee Spaeny. We were blown away. She was our Jane. If there’s one thing (emotionally or as a thought) you want the audience to leave with after seeing the film, what would it be? JUSTICE is worth fighting for and that WORDS MATTER. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave a speech at the National Cathedral on March 31, 1968. He said, in part, “We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” Ruth Bader Ginsburg has always known this to be true. Her passion for the law and its ability to right the wrongs that plague our society demonstrates how one woman’s intellect and strength changed the moral compass of a nation. My hope is that girls and young women in particular will see the film and find inspiration to realize their own unlimited potential. Was there one moment during shooting that stands out for you in this experience? There are really too many moments to mention. But there is one in particular. However, you’ll just have to go see the film, and you will know exactly what it is. I felt a huge pressure to do justice to our beloved Justice RBG. TRAILER

Where Joe Castleman (Jonathan Pryce) is brash, his wife of almost 40 years, Joan (Glenn Close) is shy. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as Great American Novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm and diplomacy into the private role of Great Man’s Wife. It’s 1993, and Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work. Joe’s literary star has blazed since he and Joan first met in the late 1950s. The Wife interweaves the midcentury story of the couple’s youthful passion and ambition with a portrait of a marriage, 30-plus years later—a lifetime’s shared compromises, secrets, betrayals and genuine, mutual love. En route to Stockholm for the Nobel Prize ceremonies, Joan and Joe are accompanied by their son David (Max Irons), an aspiring writer in his 20s. Sulky and resentful, David wears his wounded heart on his sleeve. There’s another writer on board, Nathaniel Bone (Christian Slater), a journalist who plans to write the definitive biography of Joseph Castleman. To crusty, arrogant Joe, Nathaniel’s just a pest to be brushed off, but to Joan, making an enemy of Nathaniel is a risky matter. Amid the nonstop round of ceremonial festivities in Stockholm, Joan and Joe are swept into familiar, long-worn roles: Joe is flattered and schmoozed, while Joan stands by his side wearing her quiet smile. Another familiar dynamic plays out in Stockholm as Joe is trailed by an attractive, young woman photographer assigned to document Joe’s every public moment. Joan recognizes the predictable progression of flirtation and indiscretion that she has stoically overlooked through so many years of Joe’s serial infidelities. This time, Joan’s had enough.
