Which topics should fashion brands be paying close attention to?

The retail market continues to be challenging and volatile. Fashion brands need, more than ever, to be adaptable and prepared for the next potential crisis. In this article I will answer the key questions the industry is currently asking fashion brands.

As a fashion consultant at Unzipped I have extensive links with global fashion and eCommerce which gives me an informed perspective on what fashion brands should be paying close attention to in these challenging times. I hope that my advice will support you when facing these new demands.

Post-COVID country recovery. What is your entry or exit strategy?

Now is the time to make data-driven decisions to either exit or enter a country. To make these decisions, I advise fashion brands to stay informed through reports published by McKinsey as well as daily reading of the global news.

When deciding your entry or exit strategy, questions you should be asking about a country are: - How is their economy recovering?

- Do they have a stable health care system?

- Have their eCommerce sales increased?

Across the globe eCommerce sales are booming so do the research, take action and enter these potentially strong new markets. Once you have answered these questions the final step is to focus on the right message for your launch. Create a campaign that has maximum impact and tells the story of your brand.

What should I (brand) be designing in my next collection?

Most brands have a choice to pivot and listen to consumer needs or remain focused on their existing USP. COVID has taught the industry that comfort matters. Because more individuals are working from home; sportswear, leisurewear, lingerie and nightwear are key trending categories and this looks set to stay.

At Unzipped, we are encouraging brands to react to demand while ensuring they stamp their DNA on each collection. For example, if you are a ‘going-out’ party brand, you could adapt your range to offer a larger mix of the jersey, stretch fabrications along with glamorous basics.

Sustainability and ethics, what does your brand say about you?

The message could not be clearer. Fashion brands must be, in some way, sustainable by 2021. It is a standard expectation of both the consumer and wholesale customer to see this as an offer. It will no longer set you above the rest.

How you achieve this is your decision, but what you do need to be is 100% transparent and honest. Gen Z, along with major editorials, are watching fashion brands very closely. They will confirm any claims of sustainability as well as checking how suppliers were paid during COVID How a brand is supporting #BLM will also be a key issue ?

This is a constantly evolving situation and you need to decide your brand’s take on it to succeed in 2021.

Which sales channel is right for my fashion brand? Is eCommerce really the future for the fashion industry?

The answer is a definite yes; eCommerce is the future of retail. The threat of Covid and no immediately available vaccine means customers are anxious about shopping on the high street. On line shopping is the safer option so eCommerce is here to stay.

Unzipped believes that DTC channels should remain fashion brands’ focus for the rest of 2020. Why? DTC enables the fashion brand to collect consumer data and learn from it. This channel will help build a trusting relationship with your customers, which post-COVID is more important than ever when making a sale. Your brand’s CX is yours to nurture and grow with DTC. However at Unzipped we believe global wholesale will stabilise by AW21 buying season, and this will again present greater opportunities for new brands in the fashion industry and nurture global growth.

But, this did not restrict the fashion industry from organizing elaborate fashion shows like there was no tomorrow. Not only did the year 2020 see virtual birthday and festival celebrations, it also saw the never-seen-before virtual front rows for the Spring/Summer 2021 collection! Pampering us with an array of colours, the top designers such as Dolce & Gabbana, have made sure that styles make us welcome 2021 with a bang. On the other hand we also watched Lila Moss make her debut for Miu Miu in a beautiful embroidery weaved pink top and orange skirt.

Donatella didn’t fail to impress us either with her mesmerising collection in Versacepolis. From this year’s ready to wear runway pieces, check out which ones made it to our top 5 of 5!

BALMAIN Making to the first of our list, Balmain’s collection of Men and Women Spring - Summer 2021 sure did impress all with their innovative angled shoulders showcasing power-glam suits. The eye-catching lapels and the play with fabrics to offer clean-cut suits give the ready-to-wear runway a very classy-chic sartorial elegance.

The navy men suits displayed an essence of casual yet debonair looks. These are the top 5 looks from the Balmain runway that we couldn’t resist to boast about.

The jacket – trouser dominated collection was seen designed in a well-chosen set of fuchsia lime and pink, Balmain signature graphic weave and crystal em-bellished, grey linen effect, grey slim vertical stripes, solid blacks, black leather, navy, solid whites, denims and mixed sartorial. Not to forget the metallic dress-es that the models walked barefoot in, complimented the rest of the collection. Olivier won the fashion show prize when two toddlers surprised everyone by walking the ramp and turning off the virtual front row screens.

With the hashtag #DGSicilianPatchwork, the Dolce & Gabbana Spring – Summer 2021 fashion show was the epitome of Sicilian colors. From the set back drop to the ramp, the jackets, waistcoats, trousers, shorts, bustier dresses, jacket dresses, flowy dresses, short dresses, long dresses, bra tops, shirts, skirts, headwear, boots, pumps, ballerina shoes, canvas shoes, totes, sling bags, accessories were all patch work designed (with merely a few exceptions). The designers did not seem to show any partiality towards any kind of fabric or print in the market when patching them together to create this beautiful treat-for-the-eyes collection. Not only did the duo create a fabulous array of apparel but also became an inspiration to all those diversifying in the field of reusablity and waste prevention.

Taking us on a tour to the underwater submerged city of Versacepolis, Donatella doesn’t cease to enchant her audience with her runway collections. The Versace Men and Women Spring – Summer 2021 showcased underwater inspired colours, prints, patterns, constructed coral and reef textures and embellishments. The collection embraced different body types and sizes and made it inclusive for one and all. Bright colours and crystal embellished star-fishes marked the highlight of show.

We can’t express how much we missed the red carpet season this year with celebrities from around the world walking in their most extravagant and over-the-top outfits.

Although the Emmy’s did happen this year in a completely safe environment with Schitt’s Creek swooping the majority of the awards (and ‘creating a branded immersive experience’ in our hearts), we longed to see our favorite celebrities posing for thousands of photographer sparkling their flashes.

But, among all this there were a few celebs like Ariana Grande, Zendaya, Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift who quenched our thirst to see them sway in ball gowns.

1. How did it feel receiving the Men’s Complication Watch Prize by the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève for Hand Made 1?

Of course for Robert and l this award is really significant. It’s also a very much deserved and sound encouragement that the mission we set ourselves to safeguard skills has been recognised by the Jury of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. But, above all it’s recognition for our Hand Made team or “family” who worked so tirelessly through the 6’000 hours to make the Hand Made 1. Thanks to their dedication and passion the adventure could take form and become a reality.

2. What inspired you to create Hand Made 1?

Greubel Forsey represents a unique vision from the very beginning when Robert and l set ourselves the goal to bring back the highest possible level of hand finishing in pursuit of excellence. Today this still requires an average of 4-5 months man-hours for each individual Greubel Forsey timepiece.

When Robert and l started Greubel Forsey we couldn’t find enough artisans with the necessary skills or even the traditional machines to be able to hand make all the parts by the hand-operated methods we had learnt, so we used more modern machines to rough out the unfinished parts. That meant we could focus more energy on saving the skills and expertise of “out and out” hand-finishing, skills which were already seriously endangered by industrialisation even then.

Hand Made 1 had to carry that spirit to the absolute, from the first piece of raw metal. Thanks to collectors who have supported Greubel Forsey -and our vision since the first timepiece was completed in 2004-, we have finally been able to bring together the Hand Made “family” of artisans and skilled craftsmen and women to make the dream and vision of Hand Made 1 happen.

3. What kind of R&D was required to marvel such a design?

This was very intense and new for the Hand Made 1, because we couldn’t develop the way that modern production methods and machines allow. Each and every component had to be analysed and thought through in the smallest detail given the constraints imposed by traditional machines which are entirely hand operated. Some parts had to be redrawn or completely rethought numerous times while working closely with the different team members from the micromechanic to the hand finisher and the watchmaker.

4. What are the exquisite qualities that Hand Made 1 has over other timepieces?

Quite honestly, it’s the whole timepiece. There’s no comparison in horology for such a timepiece as it’s certainly never been done before to such a level of finish and precision. We have therefore identified four essential criteria to define the project. First, any part in the timepiece that we call handmade can only be made using traditional hand operated tools and machines, so without any CNC machining, even right from the raw billet of metal.

Second, only hand finishing is allowed for any handmade part. Third, each Hand Made 1 is built just by one watchmaker. And lastly, the handmade proportion must be over 90 per cent. Everything in Hand Made 1 meets these criteria except for the main spring, the jewels, the sapphire crystal, the bracelet spring bars and case gaskets.

5. To bring this design into existence, a team of skilled craftsmen was built. What were these skills and external talents that were required?

As Hand Made 1 uses such a vast array, there are too many to list. The film of the Hand Made 1 adventure is an excellent way for you to hear directly from the team members themselves, but we can highlight a few examples. Using traditional methods to be truly handmade, we had to rediscover many different techniques.

308 components, over 150 different types, the very diversity of which goes all the way from a simple pin to the balance and hairspring. It includes over 80 handmade screws of which there are more than 20 different types. A seemingly simple gear wheel can be made in perhaps twenty hours of intense concentration where hopefully nothing goes wrong, but as everything is hand guided, it really can at any moment rendering many hours of work wasted unless you can immediately start again on making a new part, slowly building the human expertise to get to the finished component to the required criteria.

6. What made you go back to the traditional tools in the times of modern technology?

It was definitely the worrying realisation that many critical traditional hand watchmaking skills were no longer being taught even in the Swiss watch schools. The industry didn’t seem worried about this with the rapid progress of industrial manufacturing, so Robert and l decided that as someone had to take the responsibility for preserving these priceless and irreplaceable skills, Greubel Forsey with the unique skills of the team was the only way to take up that challenge and also to draw attention to the loss of skills, We have also actively encouraged the safeguarding and transmission of those traditional skills because watch collectors will need watchmakers in the future who know how to restore and maintain their watches and collections, to make that one-off replacement part. The skills we are practising in Hand Made 1 are at the very backbone of that culture and know how.

7. We read that it took 6000 hours to make one of this watch, what were the major challenges did you face?

Literally they were at every stage, but to choose one, it would certainly be the artisanal making of the balance “hair” spring.

Normally these springs are only made industrially in their 1000’s or 10’000’s, but we only needed just a few and to safeguard the expertise. We started out with a large billet of the special alloy we needed. Then we had to rediscover the many different processes. Some of which we knew the theoretical principles of already, while we were able to learn some others from a retired technician but then we had to apply these for ourselves to get to first base;- a wire of just 0.5mm diameter which was then several hundred kilometres in length!

Next we needed to get this wire drawn and fashioned down to the final almost rectangular-section spring wire for a single hairspring. This is about 0.07 x 0.03mm (just half a human hair thick) and only 10 centimetres long. All this took an enormous amount of energy, resource and about six years to achieve. We had to make a lot of specific equipment and then to master the necessary techniques. Incredibly through all these stages we still didn’t know if the wire was still good or if it had been spoiled in any of the different processes along the way. Next the wire had to be very carefully wound into a drum, where it could be heat treated to fix it into the perfect spiral shape. Now the spring could be mounted onto the balance wheel, adjusted and timed by hand and finally mounted into the tourbillon cage. The cage was built into the movement where we could finally get it ticking. Further adjusting of the timing again by hand and finally we could see if we had succeeded! We were delighted and perhaps relieved that after all this work the timing results and performance were exceptionally good and in fact well within our Greubel Forsey criteria. 8. To obtain the 308 components of the Hand Made 1 respecting Greubel Forsey criteria, over 800 parts had to be produced. What were these criteria?

We imposed on ourselves the same tolerances that we use for a Greubel Forsey timepiece in order to ensure precision, performance and reliability, it was necessary to aim for the 800 parts to try to be sure that there would be one of each part which fulfilled the final criteria to build the timepiece with. As mentioned earlier, the making process can go wrong at any moment until the part was completed so this was really the strict minimum.

9. What are some of the ancestral arts of watchmaking would you like to bring back to existence for the future generations?

The list is very long, with five hundred years of mechanical watches and clocks already in existence, many ancestral techniques have been lost over the years, we have begun the mammoth task to safeguard and transmit these for future generations, but we hope to dedicate more resource and energy, to this as each commissioned Hand Made 1 piece enables us to broaden the skills within our team.

10. What aspects must a watch embrace to qualify for a true Greubel Forsey style?

Quite simply put the Greubel Forsey style can be found in our logo “Art of Invention”. The visible artistic side is really at one with the invention technical side of each individual timepiece. Of course there are many other qualities required too, for example, the creation must be timeless, original, rare and exceptionally well hand finished. This is a long and exhausting process to master.

11. You did mention that hand making a watch was your childhood dream, what had happened that influenced you to do so?

Robert’s father was a watchmaker and at a young age, the fascination of the miniature world of the mechanical watch captured his imagination and so the dream to one day hand-make a watch was born. For me, the fascination and beauty of the antique mechanisms of clocks and watches in Museums planted the seed and gave me the motivation to study Horology, When Robert and l started working together over 20 years ago now, we realised that we wanted to understand how such fantastic scientific time measuring instruments were made with such skill even several hundreds of years ago. So the dream was a shared vision to learn those techniques and be able to one day create a Hand Made watch to show that it could still be done and add to the extraordinary history of mechanical Horology.

12. Are there any dreams that you feel that you and Robert have accomplished in terms of watchmaking?

We have certainly been able to bring back real invention to mechanical watchmaking. The combination in a Greubel Forsey timepiece is unique. An artistic and creative approach (which Robert leads) when viewed with the technical inventions, means that all of the 30 new, original and different calibres created since 2004, from the first invention of the Double Tourbillon 30° right up to the ground-breaking Grand Sonnerie or the Art Pieces, speak for themselves as an important part of our dream. Perhaps almost as important is that they are a lasting testimony to the skills and passion of the team at our Atelier here in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

13. Which Greubel Forsey timepiece, according to you, is an award worthy timepiece and why?

All of them are of course very special and worthy of attention, because they make up part of an adventure to rediscover and practice excellence in mechanical watchmaking. At the same time striving to add to the long history with new inventions and mechanisms rather than taking an easier path to focus only on different versions of the same watch movement which would have been a more commercial approach.

14. We adore your timepieces and we are sure that there are a lot more Greubel Forsey fans out there. Could you drop us a hint of new surprises that Greubel Forsey has in stock for us?

We communicate as much as we can about upcoming projects through our EWT platform which gives insight into the research and development going on, but the process can be long when you are breaking into unknown territory and so we cannot plan that an invention will be complete and able to launch on a specific date. This makes it difficult to give too much away in advance.

However, we can give your readers a glimpse into a truly original and exciting area which is Greubel Forsey’s Mechanical Nano. We have been working on this for over 10 years now. We have delved right into the very fundamentals of mechanical watchmaking, quite simply put, space and energy. These have governed the miniaturisation of horology through the years and are both extremely limited in the micromechanical universe of a wristwatch, but these are the very boundaries we can break through with Mechanical Nano.

Here, we have taken a very original and completely different approach to that of the mainstream watch industry which has focused on miniaturising the same existing mechanisms. We have identified and are now really working with Nano quantities of energy!

This has never been done before but for us as a ground-breaking project it opens the field for the next 2030 years of inventions and developments, not only for the mechanical watch, but also to be able to use our horological expertise to invent and contribute to other areas of application with this unique approach in the wider scientific domain.

Geneva, November 12, 2020 – The 2020 prize list of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) was unveiled on Thursday November 12 at the 20th GPHG awards ceremony, a poetic digital show masterfully hosted by actor Edouard Baer.

Watchmaking excellence and vitality were saluted by the Jury and the new GPHG Academy, which handed out 19 prizes and awarded the “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix to Piaget for the Altiplano Ultimate Concept watch.

The Bovet 1822, Bulgari, Breitling, Charles Girardier, Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud, H. Moser & Cie, Greubel Forsey, Parmigiani Fleurier, Petermann Bédat, Tudor, Van Cleef & Arpels, Vacheron Constantin and Voutilainen brands were also rewarded for their expertise and creativity with one of the prestigious awards.

The Special Jury Prize, which honours an influential player on the watchmaking scene, was awarded to Antoine Simonin, watchmaker, teacher, editor as well as former director of the WOSTEP Foundation.

Introducing Phena London: Sustainable candles made from transformed waste Cooking Oil

In an increasingly finite world, we must rethink the meaning of luxury and get creative by reusing what we already have When you think of waste, what is the first word that comes to mind? It certainly won’t be luxury. In fact, waste is considered quite the opposite. We want to dispose of it never to be seen again, and we don’t even want to think twice about where it ends up. But whether we like it or not, we can’t escape waste. In fact, London alone produces 7m tonnes of it. While some of it is recycled and reintroduced into the economy, too much of which goes to landfill and incineration, contributing to global warming and the climate crisis.

Rethinking how we use waste is increasingly important as we start to understand that natural resources are finite and that are current disposal systems are unsustainable. It’s up to everyone to be more mindful of how much waste we create, but it’s especially important for governments to create incentives to reduce waste, and for businesses to create innovative products from transformed or upcycled waste that consumers would want to use.

This is where circularity comes in: an economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. In stark contrast to linear systems that take, make and dispose, circular systems are made up of reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing and recycling to create a close-loop system, minimising the use of natural resources and limiting the creation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions.

Circularity is what inspired our candles to be made from transformed waste cooking oil. WHY PEOPLE ARE T-OAT-ALLY IN LOVE WITH OAT MILK Last year oat milk sales in the US surged by a whopping 686 percent and Australia isn’t far behind with consistent reports showing that dairy is on the decline while plant-based alternatives continue to increase (in 2018 the plant milk category grew by 82%). Of all the dairy-free drops out there though, oat milk is fast becoming the favourite that people are asking for at their local café. So why is it so popular? And what actually is it?

Despite being a culture that over the centuries has heavily incorporated cow’s milk into our diets, surprisingly only one third of people produce the lactase enzyme which enables them to digest it during adulthood. An intolerance or allergy to dairy has therefore been one of the main drivers in the plant milk category; however, as more people have become aware of the ethical and environmental issues associated in dairy production, this has led to even more demand.

Milk alternatives such as soy and almond have been around for a while, but one of the newest options for people wanting to avoid dairy is oat milk. It’s fast become the popular choice because unlike a lot of other plant milks, not only does it taste and performs closely to cow’s milk, but it’s also one of the most sustainable and nutritional dairy-free milks available requiring very little water to produce while being full of good fats, protein and fibre.

Why You Must know Isaiah Frizzelle?

He is a talented individual wearing lots of hats. As an Actor, Podcaster, Writer, and Personal trainer, Isaiah has his hands and heart in several mediums without missing a step.

A NASM certified Personal Trainer with Fitness & Nutrition, as well as Behavioral Specialization certifications, Isaiah is very busy these days. The world has been on pause since the beginning of March, when Covid-19 hit us hard. With the gyms closed, (and almost every other non essential business), we live a very different lifestyle. Support your team’s Wellbeing with fun in person events that can be done remotely

Lockdown has been a longer haul than most imagined when it started but look at what you and your team have achieved! The practical and emotional adjustments for working from home, juggling home-working and home-schooling, facilitating online meetings and keeping everyone connected when they are remote all seems rather old hat now!

And now some non-essential workers are gradually returning to work, with social distancing provisions in place and others are continuing to work from home.

Your team could almost certainly do with an injection of fun, as you would have done before lockdown, to thank them for their hard work and dedication. However, although they deserve a summer party or team away day, that isn’t likely to happen any time soon.

So, if you want to host an event to acknowledge your team and boost wellbeing and morale, here are a few ideas for fun things you usually do in person that can be done remotely: Remote Workouts: While some gyms have opened for outside classes and others are putting in measures to reopen safely, this is another activity team members can get together to do remotely. Perhaps you could find an activity you think most of the group will enjoy, such as yoga, body balance or a HiiT workout and hire an appropriate instructor to take the team from the basics and progress them on, perhaps weekly, until they can all see an improvement. Alternatively, if you have fitness bunnies on your staff maybe they can share their expertise, perhaps taking it in turns to share their tips on stretches, sit-ups, planks and so on. If a plan can be designed for those looking for that extra push to do exercise, this will be much easier when collectively engaged.

Zoom Arts: If a gym workshop is not the thing, many celebrities have made dance classes available over lockdown and they are ones that we can all get involved in. Why not set up a team dance. Perhaps you could all learn a routine to do together when you are finally reunited. The exercise will boost endorphins and could cause lots of laughter. Perhaps it could start a new hobby for some people. If you’re stuck for dance teachers, get in touch, we have some great teachers available who can bring their own music, routines and fun.

Comedy could also be a great team activity. Perhaps you could all vote on a classic comedy sketch, a live stand up performance or an episode of a series. Share it with the group and watch together or separately and then chat online to discuss the best bits.

Music is also a great way to destress and connect with others. Perhaps start a remote choir where you can all sing the same song together. It doesn’t matter if you’re not the next Taylor Swift or Shawn Mendes, singing also makes you feel good and relieves stress. Perhaps there are a few musicians in your company? A Zoom session to show and share their talents with others is another great way to build connections and talk about something other than work. Or just get each team member to share their all-time favourite track or the one song that always cheers them up. Whatever you choose, music is powerful.

Remote Wine Tasting: If all that talk of activity is making you thirsty, why not try some remote wine tasting. Get the team to buy a bottle or two of the same wine and chat online about what they think of it. When that’s over, some small talk as you might have at an in-person event, is bound to lead to some giggles, especially if they “forget to spit the wine out”! And it means partners and housemates can also join in the fun. The latest models allow us to play interactively with each other. Is it F1, Tennis, Football, Minecraft, Chess, Scrabble? The list goes on and a league leader board can even be set up to motivate those joining in the fun.

Golf and Cycle: Of course, not all activities have to be remote. As the lockdown restrictions continue to be eased, there are options for us to get together in twos and later in smaller groups. Now is a great time to build teams that logistically can meet with bikes or a set of clubs and enjoy timeless banter and exercise either on the golf course or checking out cycle routes close to homes. As long as social distancing is maintained, this is a great way to improve skills and fitness levels until bigger teams can enjoy an organised company away day.

Not all these options will be right for every team member. If one of them isn’t sporty or doesn’t drink, for example, try encouraging them to join in a way that is comfortable for them. However, there is little point forcing them if they really don’t want to. Try to mix and match your activities and ask your team for their feedback. Have fun!

What does all this have to do with raising capital?

Facilitated by the lockdown, the once slow adoption of digital by the industry has been spurred on at a rapid pace. And just like online dating, online investing will be the new normal.

The investment industry is now having its ‘Tinder’ moment.

Just as online dating took off because technology made it easier to find that special someone, the same is true for online investing.

Invite-only pitching events, closed networks and a reliance on personal connections all mean a limited exposure to investors, who have to work really hard to find out about deals. Now, with technology, they too can have access to the entire pool of investment opportunities from their phone. For entrepreneurs, that means a greater chance that you’ll catch their eye, get that first date and, if all goes well, seal the deal.

Tinder for early-stage investing Like Tinder, online investment platforms, like Envestors, allow fundraising companies to have a deal profile.

Not dissimilar to a dating profile, this is the place where you tell potential investors all about your investment opportunity. Unlike Tinder, the balance here is on words over photos. A good profile will include a deal summary with videos, team profiles and market information – effectively everything an investor will need to decide if you’re the one.

How to find your perfect match 1. A profile with impact A top tip for your dating profile is to describe yourself in a way that provokes a question. But for your investment profile, you ideally want to leave no questions unanswered. Having a robust profile is key. If you want a potential investor move things to the next stage, full disclosure is an imperative.

Use video to capture attention. A succinct video overview of your investment opportunity (not your business and definitely not your life story!) will do wonders for arousing interest. Beyond that, ensure you have all your assets on display. At a minimum, you’ll need: o A market overview: What problem are you solving and how big is the addressable market? o Explanation of your product or service o Revenue model: how do you make money? o Traction: How many clients do you have, what shape is your pipeline in? o Introduction to the management team: track record, sector knowledge & previous exits o Competition: How are you different (and better!) to your competitors o Financial projections: How much money are you going to make over what time period? o Investment Offer: How much investment are you seeking? What is your valuation? What will the money be used for? o Exit strategy: What is it and what are some examples of recent exits in your market.

A good investment platform will allow you to control access to your documents so you can share your most intimate secrets with select suitors whilst keeping your details out of the hands of your competitors.

2. Keeping up to date In the same way that a savvy online dater will ensure their photos are current, you need to keep your profile up to date and fresh as investors may be keeping an eye on you from a distance. Add regular (weekly is good) updates on new customer wins, new hires, new partnerships, and sales results. Keep giving investors reasons to come back and take another look. Maybe they weren’t sure the first time, so keep showing them you deserve a second look.

3. Do your pre-date research Once you’ve that first date in the diary, get ready to wow them. First meetings are as crucial as first dates.

Chemistry is always at play, so you need to ensure you’re prepared so you can relax and be yourself when you finally meet.

We always recommending researching your ‘date’ before you meet them. Find out what else they’ve invested in or what boards they sit on. Ensure you can show them you’ve taken the time to learn a bit about them.

This will make it easier to break the ice and also to find out why they decided to make previous investments, so that you can tailor your pitch to them.

Dress to impress You also need to dress the part – we’re all getting so comfortable with video calls that it’s becoming the norm to be at least half clad in your pjs, but some studies show that your clothing choice can affect your performance, so take a bit of time to put on your Sunday best – it might just be the difference between a good pitch and a great pitch.

5. Have the numbers at your fingertips The final preparation point is to know your numbers. Don’t just rely on your charm, make sure you know your numbers because you’re very likely to be asked about them and, in many cases, to justify them. It’s worth ensuring they roll off the tip of your tongue and are justifiable.

Our last tip is to try walking in your date’s shoes. The point is to consider the investor’s perspective. Your business might be the greatest thing in the world – to you, but they are still deciding. Keep in mind their goal is to get their money back, so they need to believe you are capable of delivering the growth you are promising and that your exit strategy — the bit where they get their money back — is sound. Like savvy singles who have friends at the ready to make an ‘emergency get out of date phone call’ investors walk into a room backwards, they are looking for reasons not to invest. So, listen well, respond clearly and transparently, and you just might get that important second date.

This self portrait was born out of the pandemic. I was struggling to find balance and certainty after losing a business of 20yrs and not knowing what the future holds.

I started to use photography as a way of expressing in ways I have never done before. The original image didn’t represent how I was feeling and how I needed to feel hopeful about the future. I started to add layers to it, different colours and effects and loved the way it turned out.

Some people have told me it is very sensual, and perhaps that is because it feels like an authentic representation of me. I call it Walking Into The Light and its one of my favourite ever images because of what it means to me.

I founded Cat Hamilton Photography because of my love of being creative. Photography is my favourite way of expressing. I class myself as an abstract photo artist because it’s not obvious that my images are created from photo’s.

My work is grounded in my meditation practice and synesthesia where I can interpret sounds and movement visually.

A lot of my personal work is self portraits where i interpret the feelings I want to convey in colour, motion and shapes. I like to think of it as capturing my spirit. I also do this for others. It feels more expressive for me rather than a literal representation of what is in front of me or what someone looks like, especially since my world is so vivid and experienced in different ways than most.

Lockdown gave me time to explore my photography in more expressive ways. I was able to transform my self portraits and give them depth and meaning through my synesthetic vision and evolving them through an editing software. When I saw the effects I knew I had found my authentic expression.

I add layers and different effects until I get my images to the place that feels right and gives me an accurate interpretation of what I was feeling at the time ; even if it is not obvious to the observer. My work is deeply personal and the true meaning in not know unless I share it. My next project is to do a series of my favourite songs.

During my time as a photographer I have worked behind the scenes on a couple of indie films, a music video and theatre. I’ve covered several events, plus I love to engage in my own self led projects.
