CELEBRATING 99 YEARS OF HBCU GRIDIRON GREATNESS

The State Fair Classic - A Legacy Like No Other

W W

hen you think about college football, you might picture large crowds, roaring fans, and hair-raising plays. Yet there’s a special

kind of magic in HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) football that goes beyond the game For almost a century, the State Fair Classic has become a high-spirited tapestry of culture, passion, and community at “The World’s Largest State Fair” in Dallas, TX.

In 1925, the State Fair of Texas hosted the inaugural State Fair Classic at the Cotton Bowl that featured the Wiley College Wildcats and the Langston University Lions The annual match-up would happen on "Negro Achievement Day," which was the only day that African Americans were permitted entry to the State Fair until desegregation in 1967.

Over the course of 99 years, other HBCUs, such as Tennessee State University, Prairie View A&M University, Texas Southern University, Bishop College, Grambling State University, Elizabeth City State University, and North Carolina A&T State University have participated in the State Fair Classic Through ALW Entertainment, the present rivalry between the Prairie View A&M Panthers and the Grambling State University Tigers dates back to 1985.

Mitchell Glieber, President of the State Fair of Texas, stated, “The State Fair Classic is a long-standing tradition at the State Fair of Texas, dating back nearly a century. It’s more than just a football game; it’s a celebration of culture and community. Since its first kickoff in 1925, the State Fair Classic has brought fairgoers, fans, and alumni together to create memories that have spanned across generations We are proud to host this historic game at the Cotton Bowl Stadium each year, honoring the deep roots it has in Texas history.”

ALW Entertainment's founder, Al Wash, has continued to successfully champion the State Fair Classic for 49 years, making it the third most attended HBCU football rivalry in the nation.

“This [State Fair Classic] is a homecoming and family event in the heart of the community of South Dallas,” commented Wash. “It is the largest Black event in the State of Texas under one roof with 60,000 people at one time.”

Mr Wash is a well-respected promoter and consultant and has worked with Prince, Tyler Perry, Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond, Fantasia, Lyfe Jennings, Gladys Knight, Dave Koz, Boys II Men, KEM, Brian Culbertson, Warren Hill, Chante Moore, and countless others.

Along with the football game, spectators and fans attend for the pre-, mid-, and post-event concerts as well as “The Best Halftime Show in the Country ” For $35 per ticket, spectators get admission into the State Fair of Texas, the State Fair Classic, access to the Chevy Main Stage Concerts, and halftime show

For ALW Entertainment, it's the overall experience that draws visitors each year from all around the DFW Metroplex and the entire country. Continual improvement of the experience makes it more worthwhile and enjoyable for every ticket buyer

“We sell tickets from Alaska to Utah and all over the country,” said Wash “We market the event experience, not just the game. It’s not about each game, but about the event as a whole. And we are still improving upon everything every year. ”

Mitchell Glieber President, State Fair of Texas
Al Wash Founder, ALW Entertainment

One of the biggest additions to the classic has been Bay Bay’s Block Party featuring Bay Bay from K104FM's The Afternoon Turn Up. Throughout the game in the south end zone, Bay Bay brings local and national celebrities to perform. Celebrities in the past have included Erica Banks, Trapboy Freddy, Yung Nation, Big X, Beat King, and more. It's anticipated to be even bigger this year!

Additionally, ALW Entertainment presents concert events both before and after the game to complement the celebrity

appearances throughout the game. This year, Big Daddy Kane will perform immediately after the game, and Deitrick Haddon will headline the pre-game event.

And of course, one would be remiss to not mention “The Best Halftime Show in the Country” featuring Grambling State University’s World Famed Tiger Marching Band and The Orchesis versus Prairie View A&M’s The Marching Storm and The Black Foxes. Combining the energy of live music and dance with the excitement of competitive spirit, the halftime show has always created an unforgettable experience to dazzle the audience.

If you are looking for even more things to do, the State Fair offers an abundance of activities for everyone, including midway games, shopping, food aplenty, family-friendly entertainment, rodeo activities, and more!

“It is something there for everyone – from a 3-year-old to a 90-year-old. You can come for a week and still not cover everything offered at the State Fair There is a lot of ground to cover and exhibits to see, ” said Wash

Fans and spectators alike plan their year around the State Fair and State Fair Classic football game, knowing they’re about to witness something special.

“The State Fair Classic embodies the spirit of competition, unity, and culture,” remarked Glieber “From the game itself to the Battle of the Bands at halftime, the energy and excitement that fills the Cotton Bowl on game day reflects the importance of this event to the State Fair and to all who attend. The State Fair of Texas is proud to continue hosting this historic matchup year after year. Fairgoers and fans alike can enjoy everything that the Most Texan Place on Earth has to offer through entertainment, food, and activities that can last all day long. Their attendance at the game brings them to the fairgrounds, but their interest keeps them here to enjoy all the Lone Star State has to offer Ultimately, the support of Grambling State and Prairie View A&M fans

allows us to fulfill our mission of community involvement by attending this treasured tradition during our largest fundraiser of the year ”

In essence, the State Fair Classic isn’t merely a game; it’s a celebration of culture, community, and resilience. As we celebrate nearly a century of thrilling plays, unforgettable entertainment, and cherished traditions, let’s remember that this journey is about more than just winning. It’s about coming together, creating memories, and inspiring future generations

The 2024 State Fair Classic will be held at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, September 28th at 6:00 PM.

Tickets are $35 each. Tickets can be purchased online or through a verified ticket outlet. For more information, please visit: www statefairclassicfootball com

CELEBRATING HERITAGE, HONORING LEGENDS

An Introduction to the National

Multicultural Western Heritage Museum and Hall of Fame

IIn Fort Worth, Texas, where the spirit of the American West is alive and thriving, the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum and Hall of Fame stands as a beacon of history, culture, and education. Founded by my husband, Jim Austin, and me, this

museum was born from a deep passion for preserving and sharing the often-overlooked stories of diverse communities that shaped the American West

AVISIONREALIZED

When Jim and I envisioned this museum, we saw a place where the rich tapestry of multicultural contributions to the Western frontier would be celebrated and preserved. From the bravery of Black cowboys and cowgirls to the ingenuity of Native American tribes, the resilience of Hispanic vaqueros, and the contributions of Asian and European settlers, the museum serves as a testament to the true diversity of the American West.

HONORINGLEGENDS:THEHALLOFFAME

Our Hall of Fame is a cornerstone of the museum, where we honor the lives and legacies of remarkable individuals who made significant contributions to Western heritage. Each year, we induct new members men and women whose stories have inspired generations. These inductees include rodeo stars, ranchers, lawmen, musicians, and others who broke barriers and left an indelible mark on history Their stories are not just part of our past but a vital part of the narrative we continue to tell today

GETINVOLVED:VOLUNTEEROPPORTUNITIESANDDOCENTPROGRAMS

The success of our museum relies heavily on the support and dedication of our community. We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities for those who share our passion for history and culture. Whether you ’ re interested in greeting visitors, assisting with special events, or helping with educational programs, there’s a place for you in our family.

Our Docent Program is perfect for those who want to dive deeper into the museum ’ s exhibits and share their knowledge with others. As a docent, you’ll receive specialized training to guide tours and educate visitors, enriching their experience and broadening their understanding of the multicultural history of the West.

SHAPINGTHEFUTURE:YOUTHCULTURALHERITAGEWORKSHOP&MUSEUM TOURPROGRAM

Education is at the heart of our mission, and we are thrilled to offer the Youth Cultural Heritage Workshop, a dynamic program designed for students of all backgrounds. This workshop, available to public, charter, private, and home schools, provides a unique opportunity for young people to explore their cultural heritage and understand its connection to the broader history of the American West.

Teachers and school administrators can now sign up for the 2024-2025 school year. The workshops are available Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and we encourage early registration to secure your preferred dates. THE JUGGLE IS REAL

SSmall businesses everywhere have to juggle thousands of tasks daily Whether it’s juggling children, a spouse, family, payroll, profit margins,

traffic, appointments, health, finances, and personal time. The mind of a business-owner is racing on all-cylinders at any given moment. Where do find the time? When do we find the time? Wow! Does time fly?

In so many words….yes and no. Being able to juggle so may responsibilities and being good at it takes skills, patience, and for others, a good bottle of wine!

Here are three tips that will help you JUGGLE: DON’TWASTEMYTIME

Time management is your friend. Keeping a great calendar system is important. Many entrepreneurs attempt to separate their personal self from their business self That’s great; however, how are you showing up for important meetings. Creating a great calendar and/or appointment system works great. Allow your customers (both internally and externally) to schedule appointments through an on-line or digital calendar system Don’t forget to block out moments on your calendar for coffee breaks, lunch, and travel time to/from appointments.

PINCH-HITTERS

Duplicity How do you carbon-copy yourself? You can’t be everywhere all the time Train others on various tasks and allow them to be held accountable as well as great note-takers. Record your ZOOM meetings and allow your assistant or even virtual assistant to take notes and provide you with cliff-notes and action items Send a representative in your stead Not every event involves your presence. Sometimes the thought really does count.

JUSTSAYNO

Supporting others who support you can be overwhelming Attending every PTA meeting, public meeting, appointment, or training is exhaustive. Saying no will not get you “black-listed”. It means “not yet” or “just not this time”. Ask for another date and time or if it’s a revolving event, confirm for the next one

GOOD MANNERS ARE STILL IN STYLE

oodmannerswillopendoorsthatthebesteducationcannot,”saidSupremeCourt Justice Clarence Thomas. Good manners will get you farther in life than a million dollars.

Good manners never go out of style. Times may change, but social graces and etiquette remain the same When people display good manners, they express compassion and respect You are in charge of how others perceive you. How do you want to be perceived?

Having good manners and using them will help you develop good communication skills, interact with people better and build a good rapport. Good manners are the key to success. Good manners, etiquette and protocol are also the key to a healthy society.

What would happen if we lived in a society without good manners? It would be a mess, and I cannot emphasize enough the importance of having good manners

Good Manners Good manners = success.

INTRODUCING WORKHERO

A NEW TYPE OF HR CONSULTING COMPANY

IIntroducing WORKHERO: A new type of HR consulting company designed for ANYONE who is struggling at work in the trenches and needs a way out (Without rage quitting your job!)

Hello JAO Readers,

My name is Trisha DuVivier and I am the Founder and CEO of WORKHERO, Inc , an HR consulting company that was formed by employees and leaders, for employees and leaders stuck in workplace trenches that are making them unhappy. The workplace can often look and feel like a war zone: Office politics, HR appearing as the adversary, organizational failures, miscommunication, petty gossip, anxiety and stress, unfair workloads…the list goes on. What we discovered is that it doesn’t matter who you are in an organization, everyone has a workplace trench With Master’s Degrees in HR Management and Clinical Psychology and years of experience helping companies all over the world, WORKHERO is a team of established experts who get employees and leaders out of the trenches and keep them out. In this issue of JAO magazine, we want to highlight one of those trenches, Professional Health and “Unwellness,” and give you a few tips on how to stay sane when a common workplace occurrence rears its ugly head: Breaches of Trust in the Workplace

Work is work. It’s a place we show up to, do things, and get paid. But, we often forget about how much trust (or lack thereof) can impact the workplace experience. We tend to find out who we can trust, either through direct experience, observation, or workplace gossip. Breaches of trust in the workplace can really harm our Professional Health and Wellness and make us professionally unwell by creating feelings of shame, awkwardness, and downright paranoia (We can’t be the only people who have ever avoided an ex-work-wife or work-husband in the elevator ) Maybe you confided in your co-worker that your marriage is falling apart and the next thing you know, the janitor knows about it. Or perhaps you ’ re a mid-level HR manager, and you told your peer that you were a little stressed with the number of employees you had on your team, and in a few

days, the Senior HR manager wants to do a “check-in” meeting with you No matter who you are in an organization, the feeling that someone breached your trust is unpleasant

Here’s how you can cope and avoid an emotional outburst or a passive-aggressive response that will surely make the matter worse:

Assess the Breach of Trust: Try and do this step after you ’ ve taken some time to calm down. How bad was the breach of trust? What’s the damage? Is the damage shortterm or long-term? Assessing the breach helps you put in perspective what is important to you and will put you on a path to developing a plan of action to manage any fallout (either perceived or real)

Ask Yourself the If and Why: After you ’ ve assessed, ask yourself if you even want to be bothered repairing the relationship and why (or why not). Maybe it’s not that important to you to repair the relationship because you ’ ve assessed the damage to your promotion prospects to be nonexistent and you ’ re totally fine eating lunch solo Perhaps you do need to somewhat repair the relationship in a way that makes it functional since you ’ re going to be working on a project together for the next 6 weeks Or maybe the relationship is one that is extremely important to you and one you don’t want to give up on. Either way, determining if the relationship is worth salvaging and why (or why not) is hugely important in maintaining an optimal level of professional health and wellness for yourself

How: How are you going to do whatever it is that you decided to do with the person who breached your trust? Will you limit your interactions to exchanging pleasantries every morning and small talk? Will you schedule time and ask the person to meet and then calmly express your concerns? Perhaps you engage a conflict resolution professional at your company to guide you Your how is based on your workplace personality and other factors you deem important

Sometimes, these steps can be difficult to execute, and the steps differ when the breach of trust is between supervisor and employee No matter the scenario, take a deep breath and a few days to think it through. In these types of situations, time is your friend.

WORKHERO™ believes that it does not matter who you are within an organization: Everyone has at least one workplace trench that overwhelms them When organizations get stuck in workplace trenches, they cannot effectively respond to inevitable change and challenges Our goal is to pull organizations out of workplace trenches and equip them with WORKHERO tools to effectively respond to change while increasing their bottom line.
