SPRING 2022

In the opening words of Psalm 115 the writer rightly seeks exclusive and inexhaustive glory for God, the only one worthy of worship—because of the mercy and steadfast love shown, and because of truth and faithfulness experienced. This stands true both then and now, and all times in between. It also stands true in things both large and small—from the whole plan of redemption through Christ, to the very breath we breathe. From the salvation of an individual, to the growth of a ministry in His kind providence. All things must stir our hearts in praise and should result in humility, thanksgiving, and obedience to our maker and sustainer.
Our experience at Reformation Heritage Books over recent months has only affirmed this once again. We have witnessed much blessing and growth and have been used as a means of spreading the glorious gospel, and of promoting the truth of God all over the world, even in spite of restrictions upon us during this extraordinary time. But we attribute none of this to ourselves, but rather give all glory to the one and only true and living God. Yes, we are so thankful for our partners (you), and our donors, who enable us to produce and promote important and life-changing resources, but ultimately it is all from Him, and He will share His glory with no one as He inevitably continues to build His church.
Commenting on this verse, Charles Spurgeon reminds his listener of how the Israelites, and more specifically, their God put fear and dread into the nations all around who stood in their way as they proceeded from Egypt to the Promised Land. He goes on to interpret the intended meaning saying, “So the psalmist’s prayer here is practically, ‘Lord, do the same again—not for our sakes but for your own name’s sake—that once again the heathen all around may know there is a God in the midst of Israel and that they may be caused again to tremble as they did before and no longer blaspheme or defy the God of Jacob.’”
Our prayer then is that God will be in the midst of His people and will continue to strengthen us and use us as a ministry, and make us more effective in the battle, all the while keeping us faithful. That we may be a mighty weapon in His hands.
Again, thank you so much for your support. There is much still to do, and we covet your prayers, and God’s continued blessing, all to His glory.

Petrus van Mastricht’s Theoretical-Practical Theology presents one of the most comprehensive methods of treating Christian doctrine. In it, Mastricht treats every theological topic according to a four-part approach: exegetical, dogmatic, elenctic, and practical. As a body of divinity, it combines a rigorous, scholastic treatment of doctrine with the pastoral aim of preparing people to live for God through Christ. Students and pastors will find it a valuable model for moving from the text of Scripture to doctrinal formulation that will edify the people of God.
Volume 3, The Works of God and the Fall of Man, is a book of origins—origins of the created order and of sin. Mastricht begins with a discussion of the decrees of God and how they establish His eternal purpose for everything. He then shows how the decrees are carried out in creation and in God’s continual providence. The volume concludes with Mastricht’s treatment of the apostasy of Adam from his original estate and the devastating effects of sin that followed. This is an important volume for learning how God governs all things, even the rebellious actions of those good things He created.
Take Mastricht for divinity in general, doctrine, practice and controversy, or as an universal system of divinity; and it is much better than any other book in the world, excepting the Bible, in my opinion.
JONATHAN EDWARDS

The very title of this work, Theoretical-Practical Theology, indicates why, three centuries ago, Petrus van Mastricht’s work appealed to Scottish ministers who studied under him or read his theology. Not least of these was his student James Hog, who would later famously republish The Marrow of Modern Divinity. In making van Mastricht’s classic available in English for a new generation of students, pastors, and scholars, the Dutch Reformed Translation Society and Reformation Heritage Books are giving a great gift to the Christian church as a whole, and to students, pastors, and scholars in particular.

Discover boldness and joy in prayer. Author Sarah Ivill contends, “As we study prayer through the lens of the unfolding story of Scripture, it will teach us how to pray, but more importantly it will reveal the Covenant God to whom we pray.” Studying God’s people in prayer from Genesis to Revelation provides the foundation and motivation necessary to enrich your prayer life.
If we didn’t believe that God hears our prayers and that our prayers really do make a difference, why would we even bother to pray? But who is the God who hears our prayers? What moves Him? What kinds of things does He want us to talk to Him about? In this book, Sarah Ivill works her way through the story of the Bible, showing that a mark of God’s people has always been pouring out our hearts to God in prayer. Along the way, she encourages us to become people who increasingly find prayer to be a resource and refuge. author of What

Beeke and William Boekestein help children understand the struggle for reformation in England and how the Westminster Assembly sought to further the Reformation in that land. In A Biblical Case against Theistic Evolution, Wayne Grudem and other leading scholars challenge the belief that Genesis is mostly symbolic, rather than a true, historical narrative. Grudem examines 12 specific events in Genesis 1–3 and explains why acknowledging their historicity is critical to understanding the rest of Scripture. He also emphasizes several foundational doctrines, including God’s ongoing involvement in creation, the beginnings of mankind, and the origin of sin and death, to show readers how the theory of theistic evolution undermines essential truths throughout the Old and New Testaments.
A Biblical Case against Theistic Evolution is content taken from the last five chapters of Theistic Evolution that has been condensed and adapted.

Many prominent Christians insist that the church must yield to contemporary evolutionary theory and therefore modify traditional biblical ideas about the creation of life. They argue that God used—albeit in an undetectable way—evolutionary mechanisms to produce all forms of life. Featuring two dozen highly credentialed scientists, philosophers, and theologians from Europe and North America, this volume contests this proposal, documenting evidential, logical, and theological problems with theistic evolution—making it the most comprehensive critique of theistic evolution yet produced.

The aim of systematic theology is to engage not only the head but also the heart and hands. Only recently has the church compartmentalized these aspects of life—separating the academic discipline of theology from the spiritual disciplines of faith and obedience. This multi-volume work brings together rigorous historical and theological scholarship with spiritual disciplines and practical insights—characterized by a simple, accessible, comprehensive, Reformed, and experiential approach.
The first volume in the Reformed Systematic Theology set of four projected volumes that draws on the historical theology of Reformed tradition, exploring the first two of eight central points of systematic theology—the doctrines of revelation and the character of God—with an accessible and comprehensive approach that is biblical, doctrinal, experiential, and practical.
In volume two, Joel R. Beeke and Paul M. Smalley shift from the doctrine of God (theology proper) to the doctrine of humanity (anthropology) and the doctrine of Christ (Christology). This extensive Reformed theology explores the Bible’s teaching about who we are and why we were created, as well as who Jesus is and why His divinity is essential to the Christian faith.
In volume three, they unpack the work and role of the Holy Spirit (pneumatology) and salvation (soteriology). The authors examine the Holy Spirit’s role in the history of salvation, the order of salvation, and the believer’s experience of salvation. As readers consider the interrelationship between the Spirit and salvation, they are invited to explore the direct activity of the Lord in their lives for their salvation.
“We believe that the experiential application of doctrine is paramount for doing good systematic theology. Systematic Theology should minister to the whole person,” write Beeke and Smalley. “We hope that this work will help prepare God's servants to nurture spiritual knowledge and saving faith in God's people according to the riches of Christ. We aim not only to educate you as the reader, but also to edify you and to equip you to tell others the wonders of our God.”

"
Biblical and natural theology may seem like oil and water, Jerusalem and Athens, or in this case, Geerhardus Vos and Thomas Aquinas. What has one to do with the other? Vos and Aquinas might seem like an ill-matched pair, but the two actually do belong together. As much as Vos has a reputation for being the father of contemporary Reformed biblical theology, he spent his earliest academic labors teaching dogmatics at the Theological School, now Calvin Theological Seminary, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As a part of his teaching load, Vos taught a course in natural theology, whose lectures appear for the first time in English translation in this volume. Setting the context for Vos’s lectures, however, first requires establishing the framework for natural theology in the wider Reformed tradition, more specifically in the nineteenth century, and then within Vos’s own education. With Vos’s lectures properly framed, the stage is set to delve into the lectures themselves to identify their background, methodology, sources, principles, and relationship to his later thought.

Well Ordered, Living Well

Government is not what you would call popular these days. On the political right, many fear that the growth, spread, and reach of government will deprive citizens of core freedoms. On the political left, many fear that the rise of charismatic leaders across the world will shatter global norms and values. We live in a day when one of the few areas of agreement across the political spectrum is to hold government at arm’s length.
When it comes to the church, “government” often isn’t at the top of anyone’s list of priorities. The church should preach the Word, evangelize the lost, train up disciples, help the needy–on this most Christians would agree. But church government? How could something so impersonal and bureaucratic be critical to the Spirit-indwelt body of Christ? And hasn’t church government done a lot of harm? How many churches have needlessly split? How many pastors have unfairly lost their jobs? How many people have been wrong fully removed from membership? How many unbiblical decisions have been made–and all because of church government?
So, yes, we have an uphill climb ahead of us. But church government does matter. Not because of tradition (though we are not the first to think about these things). Not because of expediency (things do have to get done in the church, after all. The building’s light bill won’t pay itself). But because of the Bible. We believe that church government matters because the Bible says that it matters.

Second Timothy encourages pastors to guard, entrust, suffer for, and above all, preach the gospel. Yet it is also full of encouragement for Christians living in a hostile world. Like Timothy, we need reminding that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” We need to “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” and confident in the Scriptures, which are “given by inspiration of God.” And we need to hope in Christ’s return, when He will award the crown of righteousness “to all who have loved His appearing.” Michael G. Brown’s exposition of 2 Timothy is not only Christ-centered, redemptive-historical, and gospel-focused, but also packed with pastoral and practical application.

A Practical Theology of Family Worship
Jonathan Williams
Paperback, 152 pages
Retail Price: $18.00
RHB Price: $14.00
Richard Baxter believed that family worship is God’s will, a conviction that profoundly shaped and motivated his pastoral ministry in Kidderminster. It is said that at the beginning of his ministry, hardly one family to a street honored God in family worship; by the end of his ministry, there were streets on which every family upheld the practice.
In A Practical Theology of Family Worship, Jonathan Williams examines Baxter’s context, the encouragements he gave for family worship, and his family-equipping ministry among the congregation. This study develops our understanding of this vital spiritual discipline among the Puritans. Yet it also draws out implications for family ministry in churches today.
By combining both a historical study with practical implementation through the eyes of Baxter and then adding contemporary implications for our own day, this book makes for an informative, stirring, and hopefully life-changing read for many families. Buy, read, and implement this book, and let it transform the way you do family worship, for then it will also, by the Spirit’s grace, transform your family for good.

Through it we learn that the Lord God Almighty is the faithful, heavenly Shepherd of His sheep—not only faithfully leading His sheep in life but also through the valleyof the shadow of death and bringing them into His house, where He will dwell with them forever.
Reflecting on Psalm 23 verse by verse will help readers see how rich and privileged the believer’s life is as they learn how God is personally committed to protect and bring His people to be with Him in heaven.
