FALL 2022

Blank looks. I have had more than a few, at conferences, at churches, and during visits to potential bookstore customers on behalf of Reformation Heritage Books (RHB). The blank looks suddenly appear when I show people the kind of resources we enthusiastically produce and promote.
Here’s why: out of the roughly forty-five titles RHB releases each year, half are by authors who went to be with the Lord many generations ago. Some of the remaining books are contemporary titles about that very same period.
The following questions probably lie behind those blank looks:
• Why would you print this kind of book?
• Who would possibly want to buy, and then read, them?
• What could we possibly learn from that (much older) generation?
The truth is that we at RHB are utterly convinced that this is where the gold is. The men and women of times past have so much to teach us today about what we would call “Experiential Christianity”—truths that impact the head, heart, and hand, every single aspect of life.
Thus, in different ways, our tagline for nearly thirty years has been that ALL of life must be impacted for and by God. This is the transformational truth espoused by the Puritans. In simplistic terms, the Puritans took the baton from the Reformers of the sixteenth century. They took the precious foundational truths of the Reformation, that were rediscovered and expounded at such high cost and (even ultimate) sacrifice, and made them deeply practical. The Puritans began to apply rich biblical truth to every aspect of life without leaving a stone unturned.
I can almost hear them saying, “Yes, Calvin, Luther, Knox, Beza, Latimer...we agree with the pillars of the faith you have presented, but how then shall we live? How must these truths impact the way we run the church, preach the gospel, arrange the home, manage money, bring up children, conduct our marriages, right down to the very basic and even seemingly mundane elements of life?” Ultimately, the Puritans asked the essential question “how I can submit every area of my life to the purpose of the glory of God?”
The writings are so precious because these were men (and some women) who wrote in times of threat, difficulty, and persecution, albeit imperfectly. Theirs was not a nominal Christianity, they were not writing the next Christian bestseller while sipping a latte in a trendy coffee shop. These time-tested resources come from believers on the front line, in complete dependence on their God, the very same faithful God we worship today. They were giving all of their lives to God, and while the cost was very much before their eyes, so was the beauty and glory of their dear Lord Jesus Christ and the infallible hope of heaven that he secures on behalf of his people.
Rich, deep writings from generations ago are not to be stared at blankly. They are to be treasured and absorbed, read and shared with our families, preached from the pulpit, meditated upon in quiet moments. The Puritans’ God is our God, and he is still transforming people today.
We too need to live by the mantra, “All of life for God,” and this is the reason RHB exists today.

Church History

What inspired you to write Church History ?
I have loved church history for years. The initial inspiration came when a seminary intern taught church history at our church. Then I started to write children’s biographies, articles, and a weekly blog. Now I am about to start a children’s podcast on church history under the auspices of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, so there seems to be no end. That said, I never thought I would write a survey of church history for kids and the whole family. I have read enough reviews of church history books to convince me that it’s a fool’s errand. And yet, something inside kept nagging me.
Did anything surprise you as you were doing research for Church History ?
I think what surprised me the most is the lack of resources about the growth of the church in continents like Asia and Africa. For example, the importance of the church in Africa in the first few centuries AD is rarely emphasized, I had never heard much about the growth of Christianity in Ethiopia, and I knew very little about the role of local believers, pastors, and theologians in those two continents, particularly after the foreign missionaries had left.
Is there anyone in Church History that you specifically and personally relate to?
This is a tough question because I relate to so many people! Sometimes I wish I had an eternity to read about these people (and I might just have it in the world to come). For example, although my own poetic skills are average, I am moved by poetry, especially as it reveals inner struggles and questions, so I have a few poets who are close to my heart (Gregory of Nazianzus, John Donne, and Ralph Erskine, to name a few). I naturally feel close to many women in church history, especially those who expressed their perplexities and challenges. I have written a book with 31 of these women and I am writing a second one. There’s hardly any woman in those books that I have not come to consider a good friend. In general, I feel very close to anyone in church history who had to face a perplexing situation and make a challenging decision. It’s not that my own life is full of perplexities, but I do like to think seriously about issues and situations, and I admire those who refused to take the most convenient course of action.
What do you hope the reader will walk away with?
First and foremost, a certainty that the church is God’s creation, and that Christ is building and preserving it to the end. I think there is too much pessimism about the state of the church, and I don’t want our kids to forget whose church it is. Second, I hope the readers understand what the gospel is and why so many people in church history were willing to die for it. It’s a major theme in my book. Third, I would like for my readers to widen their view of the church and realize that God is powerfully at work in other continents. Fourth, I hope they can realize that Christianity doesn’t always come wearing the same clothes or keeping the same external format, which has changed with time and from place to place, while there are issues, such as the gospel and Scriptural inerrancy, that can’t be abandoned without losing the privilege to be called a Christian.
What is your writing process like?
It depends on what I am writing. For the Church History book, I did an enormous amount of research. The local library knows me as the person who takes out piles of books. For my biographies, I typically read a few major biographies of the person I am studying, along with books on the time period. Then I write a quick rough draft so I can have some directions for the artist who is doing the illustrations. After that, I keep reading books and refining the manuscript. When I am happy with it, I read it as if I were reading it to kids (my kids are all grown now). Sometimes I stop doing research and read some well-written kids’ books for a while to shake off the scholarly tone I might have caught in all the lengthy treatises and get back into my readers’ world. This is just the writing process. Then of course I have to work with my artist and find photos (harder than you might think). When all is done, I send it to a couple of experts to check. I have learned not to send it to just one expert because on a couple of occasions they said something inaccurate or at least vague enough that I misinterpreted it. Asking two experts is always best.

Nick Thompson
Paperback, 224 pages

RHB Price: $14.00
Nick Thompson credits his minimalistic lifestyle with giving him the time and focus necessary to co-author numerous books with Dr. Joel Beeke and now his first solo work, Growing Downward: The Path of Christ-Exalting Humility. While writing books isn’t part of most pastors’ job descriptions, Nick views the act of writing as a significant part of his vocation. He explains why he writes in terms that make sense for a pastor tasked with administering Scripture to others:
“God is a speaking God who has chosen to cause his speech to be put onto paper and, ultimately, published in the form of a book. That is the primary means by which He saves and sanctifies His people and advances His purposes. Although the canon is closed, writing helps people grasp and apply the truths in His inspired Word.”
We asked Nick why he decided to write about humility for his first book. His response was telling: “I desperately needed it. Every person in my church needed it too.” He had been preaching a morning series on humility (now available as a podcast) and struggled to find a clear definition of biblical humility in the current literature on the topic. Writers differed on the meaning of humility, on how to interpret Christ’s humbling of himself, and what humility looked like in practice. Ultimately, Nick wants to propose a vision of humility that emphasizes a “clear and experiential sense of identity in God and Christ.”
Whether he’s accomplished that or not is up to the readers of Growing Downward. But at least one person thinks Nick has something fresh, and important, to say about humility. Joel Beeke recently endorsed the book to his thousands of social media followers, saying, “this is one of the top ten ‘best books’ of the some 1000 titles we have published [at RHB] over the last 28 years—and I don’t say this lightly. This very well-written and thoughtful book is a ‘must read’ due to its gripping teaching that the path of humility, though difficult, is the way to true meaning and fulfillment in Jesus Christ.”

Throughout the history of the church, indeed, the entirety of biblical history, men called by God to proclaim his mercies and his wrath have often spoken from a pulpit (or a mountain) as well as putting ink to paper, vellum, or parchment. God’s men proclaim his gospel to the ears and the eyes.
Tom’s new book, Joy in Dark Places, is the second of his books with RHB discussing individual fruits of the Spirit. Healing Contentious Relationships and Joy in Dark Places were not, however, the product of detached reflection by a perfect Christian. “I’m not a morose person, but I need joy,” Tom told me. “I’m writing these books because I have spiritual needs.” Since his early seminary days, Tom has endured difficult situations in ministry, family, and health. He is familiar with the darkness that every Christian faces daily, and he writes to bring the light of the gospel into that darkness.
The pursuit of truth anchors Tom’s work on biblical joy in a biblical relevance that outlasts present-day trends in social media, church culture, and the perennial pursuit of happiness. In contrast to those, Tom wraps his arms around Philippians 4:4 and plunges to the depths with it. Paul’s famous (and notoriously misapplied) statement in Philippians 4:4, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice,” is applied in all its profundity to situations that commonly deprive even the strongest Christian of joy. Old age, societal decay, problem people in the church, these all receive attention as “dark places” in which, Tom argues, joy can (and must!) be found.
Ultimately, Joy in Dark Places is a book about God and his gospel. As Joel Beeke stated recently of Tom’s work, “This book is the best book I’ve ever read on maintaining the principal of Nehemiah, ‘The joy of the Lord is our strength.’” The darkness, although ever present, and in many situations, especially present, must always submit to the brightness of God’s glory.
Who are you? What makes you “you?” With its identity politics, numerous gender identity options, “selfies,” and “you-do-you” mentality, society emphasizes individualism, but it seems like people are having a harder time than ever figuring out who they are. The problem is, they are looking for their identity in the wrong places. Do you know of someone whose identity is in relationships, a career, family, race, gender expression, or other circumstances—and feeling dissatisfied?
Then this book is for them. Author Jonathan Landry Cruse offers a fresh, some times witty, truly radical, freeing answer to the important question of who you are and helps you understand what the Bible has to say about everything you need for a lasting, fulfilling identity that is found outside of you and in Christ.
“Jonathan Cruse offers a rich and accessible account of the believer’s union with Christ, a vital biblical teaching. Forged on the anvil of Scripture and the day-today challenges of the Christian life, Pastor Cruse points readers to life-giving truth in very practical and real ways. This book will help people in the pews gain a greater knowledge of how God has united them to Christ, from their election to their glorification.”

Many church goers assume that worship is inherently boring, something we need to make exciting. But as Jonathan Landry Cruse shows, church going only seems monotonous and mundane because our eyes are blinded to the super natural wonder that is taking place all around us. In this book, Cruse helps us perceive the significance of worship and guides us through the spiritual actions of a worship service. Once you recognize how God is doing something to us and for us and through us in each element of the service, Lord’s Day worship will become the highlight of your week!
“Jonathan Cruse’s must-read, page-turning book on worship is masterful both in explaining what is really going on when we worship our holy and gracious triune God corporately as well as why and how we ought to engage with each part of a biblically grounded and biblically marinated worship service. One doesn’t need to wholeheartedly amen every detail this innovative book offers to have a profound appreciation for the way the author biblically and practically shows the place of priority that public worship ought to have in the life of every Christian. I wondered as I read this convicting and yet exhilarating book: If true believers embrace this high and moving view of worship, would the church soon see much greater days of repentance, reformation, and revival? May God forgive us for our paltry and backsliding view of worship and fill us with Himself and His glory and beauty (Ps. 27:4) as we strive to worship Him in Spirit and truth.”

Is your prayer life characterized by such things as sincerity, urgency, and delight? Engagement in prayer is a vital part of our communion with God, making a profound impact on our growth in grace. In this book, you will find thoughtful meditations on prayer in the life of the believer, as well as ample encouragement to cultivate this spiritual discipline in your own life. If you want to be more devoted to prayer, or simply want to assess the health of your prayer life, read this book. It provides both a helpful examination and a needed tonic for those concerned about growing in godliness.
“The ancient formula, ‘the law of praying is the law of believing’ (lex orandi, lex credendi), or, using other words, the way we pray determines what we believe, expresses an important but forgotten truth. To this adage we would add ‘the law of living’ (lex vivendi), that is, the way we pray determines the way we live. The strength of Developing a Healthy Prayer Life is that its 31 studies treat prayer not as an aspect of the Christian life, but as the Christian life itself. The Christian life is a life of humble, submissive, patient, persevering, trusting, thanking, wrestling, waiting, working, reverent, fervent, constant, dependent, contented, and thoughtful praying and living. As we pray, so we live, and as we live, so we pray. We have needed a book that comprehensively, yet simply, teaches us to pray, not by techniques (though some how-to’s are helpful), but by uniting prayer in the presence of God with life in the presence of God; that shows us how dependent and reverent living arises out of dependent and reverent praying. Developing a Healthy Prayer Life is just the book to help us to unite our praying and our living in a Christ-honoring whole.”
TERRY JOHNSON, Senior Minister of Independent Presbyterian Church Savannah, Georgia, and author of The Family Worship Book
During the seventeenth century, English Puritan pastors often encouraged their congregations in the spiritual discipline of meditating on God and His Word. Today, however, much of evangelicalism is either ignorant of or turned off to the idea of meditation. In God’s Battle Plan for the Mind, Pastor David Saxton seeks to convince God’s people of the absolute necessity for personal meditation and motivate them to begin this work themselves. But he has not done this alone. Rather, he has labored through numerous Puritan works in order to bring together the best of their insights on meditation. Standing on the shoulders of these giants, Saxton teaches us how to meditate on divine truth and gives valuable guidance about how to rightly pattern our thinking throughout the day. With the rich experiential theology of the Puritans, this book lays out a course for enjoying true meditation on God’s Word.
“The popular conception of meditation has become so badly misshapen by mysticism, New Age influences, and Eastern religious notions that some otherwise sound Christians today seem to recoil from any mention of meditation as a necessary spiritual exercise. But nothing is more vital or more beneficial for understanding the truth and growing in sanctification than quiet, careful, focused reflection on the words and the meaning of Scripture. That’s what the word meditation means in the Bible. No less than six times in Psalm 119 alone, the psalmist says‘ I will meditate’ on the precepts, promises, and principles of God’s Word. The Puritans had much to say about biblical meditation and the important role it plays in a sanctified thought life. Dave Saxton has written an extremely helpful and encouraging digest of some of the best Puritan teaching on the subject. You need to get a copy, read it, put its principles into practice, and ‘be transformed by the renewal of your mind.’”

Recently, our CEO at RHB, David Woollin, visited Kenya as the featured speaker at the Passion for Mission Conference. We asked him about the experience.
How do trips such as this one to Kenya tie in with the work of Reformation Heritage Books?
I was encouraged to see how God is working in another part of the world. Despite our large cultural and geographical differences, we had an immediate unity because of our mutual faith, even though many of us had never met before. The Kenya trip was a powerful reminder of the richness and variety of God’s people, both here on the earth and in our future existence in heaven.
In the publishing industry it is common to be invited to one event and then investigate if it is possible to tie a number of objectives together to make the whole worthwhile, as we try to be good stewards with the resources God entrusts us with as a non-profit organization. There are four specific ways that this trip both benefitted the believers in Kenya and supported the work of RHB worldwide:

Every attendee left the event with ten copies each, with the clear intent of giving them out and engaging in conversations to bring the good news to those they meet. Please pray that God will use these resources, and those distributing them, in the salvation of sinners and edification of believers.
Secondly, at the conference itself there was an excellent selection of books available for purchase. Some attendees went home with armfuls of books, even though they are relatively expensive in Kenya.

Thirdly, I was able to make some new connections in a few other English-speaking countries in Africa. My intent is to get great books into the whole of Eastern Africa through these good people who already have the channels to make that happen in-country.
I was also able to connect with the representatives for the African Pastors Conferences. I am so excited by this opportunity for partnership. This is a ministry that was formerly led by the late Erroll Hulse who lived close by me in the north of England when he wasn’t traveling back to Africa to preaching. The ministry effort has since been passed on to other men, and what they do day in and day out is amazing. While I was living in luxury in a home in a nice suburb of Nairobi, I watched these men prepare to set off for a number of remote villages to visit up to one hundred pastors attending a number of rural conferences. These men take with them hundreds of books which they sell for less than they paid for them. So for example, they might pay ten dollars for a Reformation Heritage Study Bible and then sell it for a mere two dollars, thanks to donations they receive every year to subsidize the cost, but really due to their love for spreading the message of hope that is the gospel. The African Pastors Conferences ministry hosts more than fifty conferences per

English Puritanism and Scottish Presbyterianism in the seventeenth century had many bright and shining lights. Of these, James Durham (1622–1658), ranks alongside the greatest of his generation, for his theological depth, faithful preaching, and particularly for his moderate spirit at a time when such was in scarce supply. While he could have been a professor of theology in any university, Durham instead spent a brief ten-year ministry preaching and lecturing for the most part in the Inner-Kirk of Glasgow Cathedral. It was thought that he poured so much of himself into his studies for sermons and lectures that it brought about his early death at the age of thirty-six. His works were often reprinted and left an impression that lasted for centuries.
A Commentary Upon the Book of Revelation Volume 1, Lectures on Chapters 1–3. This first of three projected volumes comprises a third of the lectures and fully half of the theological essays. The text covers chapter one in nine lectures (the most on any chapter) and the letters to the seven churches in Asia. The theological lectures contained cover such subjects as the doctrine of the Trinity, a call to the ministry and qualifications for the ministry, church government and church discipline, repentance, the difference in common and saving grace, and preaching and application in preaching.
A Commentary Upon the Book of Revelation Volume 2, Lectures on Chapters 4–11 is the second of the three projected volumes. The theological digressions interspersed throughout cover such subjects as the nature and extent of the merit of Christ’s death, Mede’s Synchronisms, Christ’s Intercession, the idolatry of the Church of Rome, Prophesying, the Waldenses, and the founding of true churches by reformation out of corrupt churches.
The text from both volumes have been collated with a 1653 manuscript which in places is significantly different from the published edition of 1658. A new biography will appear in volume 3. Volume 3 will also contain a bibliographical essay covering Durham’s works and manuscripts, as well as the indices, including an index of errata of prior editions.

Lovers of theology, and particularly of the Puritans, will welcome this English translation of John Owen’s Latin writings. In William Gould’s 24-volume edition of Owen’s works, this is the one volume that had been unavailable to English readers for years. Banner of Truth has reprinted the first 16 volumes plus the 7-volume commentary on Hebrews, but this volume has been available only in Latin until this edition was produced.
The major portion of this volume is a history of theology from Adam to Christ. Appended to this important work is Owen’s Defense of Scripture against Modern Fanatacism. The Defense is an affirmation that the Bible is the perfect, authoritative, and complete Word of God. Owen also defends proper interpretation against what was known in his day as ‘inner light’, and what is so common in our day—subjective, experience-driven interpretation.
Despite his other achievements, Owen is best famed for his writings. These cover the range of doctrinal, ecclesiastical, and practical subjects. They are characterized by profundity, thoroughness and, consequently, authority. Andrew Thomson said that Owen “makes you feel when he has reached the end of his subject, that he has also exhausted it.”

How did the world arrive at its current, disorienting state of identity politics, and how should the church respond? Historian Carl R. Trueman shows how influences ranging from traditional institutions to technology and pornography moved modern culture toward an era of “expressive individualism.” Investigating philosophies from the Romantics, Nietzsche, Marx, Wilde, Freud, and the New Left, he outlines the history of Western thought to the distinctly sexual direction of present-day identity politics and explains the modern implications of these ideas on religion, free speech, and personal identity.
Trueman examines the origins of contemporary Reformed theology in the Reformation world of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. After tracing how this heritage shaped and transformed the intervening period, he then describes some of the major challenges being faced by the evangelical church at the present time and suggests ways of responding which remain faithful to the Scriptures and the theology of the Reformers drawn from it and points towards a future that embraces and disseminates these wonderful doctrines of grace.

Arminius and the Reformed Tradition: Grace and the Doctrine of Salvation
J. V. Fesko
Paperback, 192 pages
Retail Price: $25.00

Some scholars argue that Jacob Arminius was really a Reformed theologian holding the basic tenets of Reformed soteriology. J. V. Fesko perceptively assesses the context and meaning of Arminius’s writings on predestination, effectual calling, union with Christ, justification, and perseverance and demonstrates that Arminius’s understanding of salvation presents an alternative Protestant soteriology. Including Arminius within Reformed orthodoxy not only rewrites history, but also disrespects his work.

“Puritan Reformed Theology is a title with a subtle double entendre. It certainly delivers what it promises—theology in the Reformed tradition mediated especially through the life and writings of the Puritans. But it also celebrates the quarter centenary of the Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan, by presenting in one volume the wonderful series of essays its founding president, Dr. Joel R. Beeke, has contributed to the seminary journal.
In these pages Professor Beeke handles a wide variety of subjects and turns them, one by one, into theological and pastoral gold. The range is extraordinary and yet focused on the main things. The ease of readability pleases the ordinary reader and yet there are footnotes in scholar-satisfying abundance. The sheer size of the book may seem intimidating, yet like a great cathedral it can be appreciated one stone at a time. Here then is a thesaurus of theological and spiritual riches, a veritable Aladdin’s cave of intellectual and spiritual pleasures. I feel sure that readers will find themselves frequently returning to Puritan Reformed Theology to find in it both theological treasure and spiritual pleasure.”
SINCLAIR B. FERGUSON, chancellor’s professor of systematic theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; teaching fellow, Ligonier Ministries
“Puritan Reformed Theology is a treasure trove of articles and sermons that reflect godly piety and biblical orthodoxy. Dr. Beeke has once again served us with a valuable work which I gladly recommend.”

“Dr. Beeke is one of the world’s foremost scholars on Puritanism, and in this volume we have a marvelous collection of chapters covering historical, theological, and practical subjects of substance. I can think of no one I would rather learn from about these matters than Dr. Beeke. This collection contains the highest level of pastoral wisdom and doctrinal reflection through the lens of one of the best theologians and pastors I have ever known.”
DEREK W. H. THOMAS, senior minister, First Presbyterian Church,Columbia, South Carolina; chancellor’s professor, Reformed Theological Seminary; teaching fellow, Ligonier Ministries
“As I look at the title and author of this book, Puritan Reformed Theology by Joel Beeke, each of these words—Puritan, Reformed, Theology, and Joel Beeke—fit together perfectly. Like links forged together on a chain, none can be separated from the others. So it is that Joel Beeke has become virtually synonymous with puritan reformed theology. This collection of articles written by Dr. Beeke and compiled into this one volume, is certain to be a storehouse of theological wealth for all who read it.”
STEVEN J. LAWSON, President, One Passion Ministries, Dallas, Texas
“It is all here: Puritan, and therefore magnificently Christ-centered. Reformed, and therefore established on the foundations of the Reformation. Theological, and therefore unashamedly confessional. Historical, therefore rehearsing relevantly timeless truths and freshly exposing old errors. Experiential, therefore conveying pathos, warmth, and conviction. Practical, therefore applicatory on almost every page. And finally, massively comprehensive, and therefore suitable for relaxing reading and mind-stretching awe.”

Dr. Stephen Nichols answered a few questions from us regarding R. C. Sproul and this new Signature Classics boxed set.
What is one of your favorite moments you shared together with R. C. Sproul?
Back in 2014 we led a tour through New England exploring the colonial roots of American Christianity and the Great Awakening. We visited Old South Church in Newburyport, Massachusetts, where Whitfield died in 1770. While there, R. C. preached a sermon on Matthew 16:17, speaking of the supernatural light. As he preached, he presented a short list of church history figures who preached with a burning passion for awakening. He spoke of men like, Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Knox, Edwards, Spurgeon, Lloyd-Jones. Men like Whitefield. About ten minutes into the sermon, I looked over at Chris Larson, Ligonier’s president, and CEO, and we both had an expression that said in effect “I can’t believe we are not recording this”. That sentiment only lasted for a second, though, as we were both caught up in the sermon. It was a moment. The King James word is unction. For all on the tour it was the highlight. For me personally, it remains my favorite R. C. sermon of all time.
Why should people pick up the new Signature Classics boxed set?
R. C. taught us that we do not have to sacrifice beauty as we pursue truth and goodness. I think he wrote with a beautiful simplicity. I think he wrote with drama. He told his homiletics
students: “Find the drama in the text and preach the drama.” He not only preached that way, but he wrote that way. He had style, not artifice but true artistry. As you likely do, I have my favorite places and paragraphs in his classics like The Holiness of God, Chosen by God, What Is Reformed Theology? I turn to these books and the dog-eared passages again and again. This edition brings the beauty of the package alongside the beauty of the contents.
Not only did R. C. write with great beauty, but he also wrote on topics of serious weight, true gravitas. This edition of his classic texts rises to the occasion, again matching the weighty content with a substantial package. This is the kind of set you will hand down to the next generation—after you enjoy it yourself. This is a set for bibliophiles.
Additionally, you might find a few texts in here you’ve never read before. All these books reflect R. C.’s inimitable style, blending serious theological study with doxology. As R. C. taught throughout the six decades of his ministry knowing God aright leads to loving and obeying God, and that is worshiping God with reverence and awe. That’s true of R. C.’s books. That’s why many of his books have earned the moniker of classic.
In short, deep truths bring deep joy. When those deep truths are beautifully presented, they bring even deeper pleasure.

The greatest need of the church today is the recovery of sound biblical preaching. We need preaching that faithfully explains and applies the text, courageously confronts sin, and boldly trumpets forth the sovereign majesty, law, and gospel promises of God. This type of powerful proclamation has vanished in many quarters of the evangelical church only to be replaced by that which is anemic and man-centered. Instead of doctrinally rich exposition which strengthens faith and fosters Christian maturity, the standard fare has become informal, chatty, anecdote-laden massages, devoid of instruction in the truths of the Christian faith. This approach leaves unbelievers confused, and keeps believers in a state of chronic spiritual adolescence.
There is indeed a dire need for the recovery of solid biblical preaching. Not only does reformation of this sort lead Christ’s sheep back to the verdant pastures of His soul-nourishing Word, it also provides a good example for present and future generations of ministers. For this reason, we are pleased to introduce The Lectio Continua Expository Commentary on the New Testament, a new series of expository commentaries authored by an array of seasoned pastor-scholars from various Reformed denominations on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Lives of the Puritans, 3 Volumes Benjamin Brook
Hardcover, 1576 pages
Retail Price: $120.00
RHB Price: $90.00
Brook’s work has much to commend it. Despite an occasional proneness to indulge in hagiography, Brook bases his biographies largely on reliable sources and writes judiciously. Much fascinating historical detail and many edifying anecdotes are sprinkled throughout these pages. Brook is particularly gifted in surfacing incidents in the lives of the Puritans that serve as windows through which we observe divine grace transforming the inner man to walk in the footsteps of Christ.
Brook’s work is versatile. It feeds the layman and informs the scholar. It excels in bringing to light God’s grace in the lives of numerous Puritans whose names would otherwise have been buried in oblivion. These volumes serve the role both of a devotional and an encyclopedia—something that can be attributed to few other titles!
Some may wonder at Brook’s uneven treatment of the Puritans. In some cases he provides only a paragraph or two on a Puritan; in other cases he supplies more than twenty pages. It ought to be pointed out that this great variation was not intended by Brook to reflect the historical degree of importance of each Puritan, but rather the amount of biographical information that was available to him.
Some may also be surprised by Puritan names not included by Brook; others, surprised by names included. This is not the place to take up in detail the nettlesome problem of defining the essence and boundaries of Puritanism. Notwithstanding an able opening sketch of one hundred pages on basic Puritan history of nonconformity from the Reformation to the Act of Uniformity (1662), Brook himself is obviously more interested in describing Puritan characteristics and traits rather than in a tight definition of Puritanism itself.
There is much to learn from and about the Puritans through the able hand of Brook. By emulating the Puritans, we may learn how to cultivate a closer walk with God, as well as how to endure hardness as good soldiers of Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 2:3). Moreover, Brook’s work ought to help counteract the halftruths and distortions which marked Puritan studies only a few generations ago. Though it is true that the Puritans unabashedly aimed for conversion centered preaching, wholehearted allegiance to the totality of Scripture, and a distinctive piety, anyone who reads these volumes seriously will no longer embrace the caricatures that Puritanism was to be associated with inhuman morals and religious demands, intolerance in the social and political arena, barrenness and stagnation in intellectual life, and a negative and pessimistic outlook on life in general.
It is obvious that the writing of these volumes was a labor of time-consuming love for Benjamin Brook. His background trained him well for this task. Born in 1775 near Huddersfield, Yorkshire, Brook became a member of an independent congregation at Holmfield. He completed his studies at Rotherham College in 1801, after which he became the first pastor of a congregational church at Tutbury, Staffordshire. He pastored this flock for thirty years until ill health compelled him to resign. During the middle of this pastorate, he published The Lives of the Puritans. In 1830 he moved to Birmingham where he continued to study the history of the Puritans for an additional seventeen years until his death on January 5, 1848 at the age of seventy-two. In 1820 he published The History of Religious Liberty and, in 1845, Memoirs of that Eminent Puritan, Thomas Cartwright.
Brook’s life passion was to stimulate Christians to walk in the paths of their godly Puritan forebearers. He hoped to especially influence the young people of various Protestant denominations to be prodded by Puritan biography hence his dedication to the “rising generation.” May God bless the reading of these short biographies to young and old yet today in the manner Brook intended, that is, in the vein of Hebrews 12:1-2, “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

The Glory and Fullness of Christ: In the Most Remarkable Types, Figures, and Allegories of the Old Testament
William McEwen
Hardcover, 384 pages
Retail Price: $35.00
RHB Price: $27.00
William McEwen is one of the forgotten writers of the Scottish church of the eighteenth century and one of the great popular exponents of a sound biblical typology. In this book, McEwen investigates numerous people, places, and things in the Old Testament and shows how they prefigure the Lord Jesus Christ. Each chapter exhibits a lively meditation, providing concise, conversational, and user-friendly explanations of each subject under review. If you wish to better understand how the Hebrew Scriptures point to Jesus, read McEwen on the types and prepare to delight in the glory and fullness of Christ.
“Perhaps the first question this book has made you ask is, ‘Who is this new author William McEwen who is adding to the growing number of works on the now-fashionable subject of seeing and preaching Christ from the Old Testament?’ If so, you will soon make a triple discovery. First, this book was written by a twenty-seven-year-old; second, he wrote it in the last year of his life; and third, he points us to Christ from the Old Testament in a way that refreshingly transcends the sometimes overly mechanical ways this is done today.
“Standing in the great tradition of Thomas Boston and the Erskine brothers, William McEwen expounds the fullness of Christ’s grace and the freeness of His love and shows affection for His person. All this combined with McEwen’s short ministry explains why this book was so highly valued by our Christian forefathers. We owe an enormous debt to Gordon Keddie for finding treasure that has lain hidden in one of the more remote fields of the church’s history and for reminding us that often the old wine is best.”
SINCLAIR B. FERGUSONThe Beauties of Boston
Thomas Boston
Christian Heritage
Hardcover, 448 pages
Retail Price: $39.99
RHB Price: $24.00
Thomas Boston never sought a prominent congregation or pulpit. He knew that, at the end of the day, the only thing that makes a pulpit lastingly prominent is the manner in which God’s word is preached from it in the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
The Beauties of Boston is a book that has been treasured by many Christians in past generations. It is full of rich gospel truth and health–giving spiritual prescriptions. Part of its ‘beauty’ is that while a big book it is not really a long book, but a series of smaller and manageable passages that will—as The Marrow of Modern Divinity did for Boston himself— stimulate thought, enhance understanding of the gospel, point us to Christ, and strengthen both mind and spirit in the knowledge and service of God.
Thomas Boston was born at Duns in Berwickshire in 1676. After studying in Edinburgh, he was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Duns and Chirnside in 1697. Shortly afterwards, he published his first book, A Soliloquy on The Art of Man–fishing, based on the words of Jesus in Matthew 4:19, ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.’ In 1699, he became the minister of the small congregation in a village called Simprin, located quite close to his birthplace. He was there until 1707 when he became minister in Ettrick, and he would serve there until his death in 1732.
Justification and Regeneration: Practical Writings on Saving Faith
John Witherspoon edited by Kevin DeYoungWestminster Seminary Press
Hardcover, 207 pages
Retail Price: $30.00
RHB Price: $15.00
Healthy doctrines of justification and regeneration have always been essential to the Christian’s faith and knowledge of God. In the context of 18th century Great Britain and its American Colonies, few treatments were as highly regarded as John Witherspoon’s An Essay on Justification and A Practical Treatise on Regeneration, both reprinted in this volume.
Providing a careful summary of Witherspoon’s life and thought, Kevin DeYoung’s introduction and notes are an invaluable guide to these classic works. Justification and Regeneration is both milk and solid food for the Christian—an incisive study of the converted person’s standing before God, along with a pastoral exploration of the power of that conversion.
In the Fullness of Time: An Introduction to the Biblical Theology of Acts and Paul Richard Gaffin Crossway
Hardcover, 448 pages
Retail Price: $44.99
RHB Price: $24.00
Christians often skip a crucial starting point when studying the apostle Paul: the foundations of his deeply nuanced theology. Some studies on the book of Acts attempt to touch on every major theme in Paul’s letters, making them difficult to understand or prone to leaving out important nuances. Christians need a biblical, theological, and exegetically grounded framework to thoroughly understand Paul’s theology.
In this book, Richard B. Gaffin Jr. gives readers an accessible introduction to Acts and Paul. Building on a lifetime of study, Gaffin teaches on topics including the redemptive-historical significance of Pentecost; eschatology; and the fulfillment of redemptive history in the death and resurrection of Christ. In the Fullness of Time is an exegetical “textbook” for pastors, students, and lay leaders seeking to learn more about Acts and Paul from a Reformed and evangelical perspective.
John Colquhoun
Hardcover, 352 pages
Retail Price: $30.00
RHB Price: $22.00
John Colquhoun (ka-hoon) was a minister in the Church of Scotland and a prolific writer. He was born in the parish of Luss (Dunbartonshire) in 1748 and was led to conversion as a teenager by the answer to the Shorter Catechism’s question, “What is effectual calling?” He immersed himself in the writings of Thomas Boston, then studied at the University of Glasgow. He was ordained as minister of St. John’s in South Leith in 1781, where he served for 46 years. He died in 1827.
“Colquhoun was a Reformed experiential preacher. His sermons and writings reflect those of the Marrow brethren, whose theology was more like that of the Secession churches than like that of Colquhoun’s fellow evangelicals in the Church of Scotland. Though Colquhoun was not allowed to recommend Fisher’s Marrow of Modern Divinity as a Church of Scotland minister, because the General Assembly had condemned it, he felt free to recommend Thomas Boston’s notes.
“Colquhoun’s writings are theologically astute and intensely practical. He wrote on the core doctrines of the gospel, particularly on experiential soteriology. He wrote A Treatise of Spiritual Comfort in 1813, then, three years later, A Treatise on the Law and the Gospel. He also wrote books on the covenant of grace (1818), the covenant of works (1821), saving faith (1824), the promises of the gospel (1825), and evangelical repentance (1825). Then, too, he wrote a catechism for young communicants (1821) and a volume of sermons that was published posthumously (1836) with a brief memoir.”
JOEL R. BEEKEThe Christian Pastor’s Manual: A Selection of Tracts on the Duties, Difficulties, and Encouragements of the Christian Ministry
Compiled by John Brown of Edinburgh
Hardcover, 432 pages
Retail Price: $40.00
RHB Price: $30.00
“Godly men from the past present a wealth of material for pastors as well as for those training for the ministry. The character, qualifications, and duties of the preacher are emphasized along with the difficulties and snares associated with the office. The priority of preaching Christ faithfully and experientially is held forth as the focal point of pastoral ministry. The Christian Pastor’s Manual was first published in 1826. Tested by time, it remains a relevant and formative handbook on pastoral ministry.
“Hundreds of books offer to show ministers and pastors the high road to success, but few direct them in the hard path of serving the Great Shepherd. In this book, John Brown has gathered choice pastoral wisdom from the evangelical divines of eighteenth-century Britain on the ‘duties, difficulties, and encouragements of the Christian ministry.’ Writers include Abraham Booth, Philip Doddridge, John Erskine, John Newton, Isaac Watts, and others. John Jennings’s chapters, ‘Preaching Christ’ and ‘Particular and Experimental Preaching,’ are alone worth ten times the price of the book, but the entire book is invaluable. The Christian Pastor’s Manual is the best collection of essays on the ministry that I have ever read. Its chapters are consistently rich; its thoughts are deep, practical, and vigorous. May they be like living seeds planted in the minds of a new generation of ministers and pastors, pressing the roots of truth into their innermost beliefs and affections and producing the fruits of faithfulness in all their lives.”

Petrus van Mastricht’s Theoretical-Practical Theology presents one of the most comprehensive methods of treating Christian doctrine. In it, Mastricht treats every theological topic according to a four-part approach: exegetical, dogmatic, elenctic, and practical. As a body of divinity, it combines a rigorous, scholastic treatment of doctrine with the pastoral aim of preparing people to live for God through Christ. Students and pastors will find it a valuable model for moving from the text of Scripture to doctrinal formulation that will edify the people of God.
Volume 1, Prolegomena, provides an introduction to doing systematic theology. Mastricht begins by addressing the nature of theology, wherein he lays out the proper method, subject matter, and definition of theology. He then discusses Scripture as the rule of doing theology, as itis the only infallible source and foundation for knowing God. Finally, Mastricht gives his rationale for the best distribution of theological topics. This volume also includes Mastricht’s homiletical aid “The Best Method of Preaching,” as well as a biographical sketch by Adriaan Neele to help readers understand the significance of Mastricht’s life and ministry.

Volume 2, Faith in the Triune God, delivers a thorough treatment of the doctrine of God. Mastricht begins his consideration of theology proper with a substantial chapter on saving faith, reminding readers that contemplating God apart from true faith will fall short of the salvation of their soul. Mastricht then discusses the subject of God in three main divisions. First, he treats the existence of God and our knowledge of him. Second, he discusses the divine essence as it is revealed through the names and attributes of God. Third, Mastricht carefully details the Trinitarian nature of the one God who subsists in three persons.

RHB Price: $38.00
Volume 3, The Works of God and the Fall of Man, is a book of origins—origins of the created order and of sin. Mastricht begins with a discussion of the decrees of God and how they establish His eternal purpose for everything. He then shows how the decrees are carried out in creation and in God’s continual providence. The volume concludes with Mastricht’s treatment of the apostasy of Adam from his original estate and the devastating effects of sin that followed. This is an important volume for learning how God governs all things, even the rebellious actions of those good things He created.

The Saints’
Everlasting Rest
Richard Baxter
Crossway
Hardcover, 192 pages
Retail Price: $24.99
RHB Price: $14.00
Originally written in 1656 and endorsed by generations of leading pastors as an essential book on the work of ministry, this abridged version of The Reformed Pastor presents the best of Richard Baxter’s timeless advice in simple, modern language that’s more accessible to a new generation of church leaders.
In inspiring communications to his fellow ministers, Baxter challenged them to pursue teaching and personal pastoral ministry with an exceptional degree of faithfulness. His words were grounded in the apostle Paul’s encouragement to the leaders in Ephesus to “take heed unto yourselves and all the flock.” Baxter’s advice remains relevant today as Christian leaders face both new and age-old challenges in ministry. With this updated, abridged version of The Reformed Pastor, editor Tim Cooper retains Baxter’s passionate message in a modern, simplified style that speaks clearly to today’s Christian leaders.
In the throes of a long illness and confronting the possibility of death, 17th-century theologian Richard Baxter found comfort in the reality of heaven that awaits believers of Christ. During his recovery, Baxter wrote about the afterlife in what would become his best-selling book.
The Saints’ Everlasting Rest meditates on what Scripture reveals about heaven, helping believers live an abundant, God-honoring life in anticipation of eternal rest. Baxter encourages readers not to become distracted or discouraged by the temporal as he refocuses their minds on the eternal. Confronting difficult topics including sin, suffering, and fear of death, he also emphasizes God’s sufficient grace and how the promise of heaven enriches life on earth.

The aim of systematic theology is to engage not only the head but also the heart and hands. Only recently has the church compartmentalized these aspects of life—separating the academic discipline of theology from the spiritual disciplines of faith and obedience. This multi-volume work brings together rigorous historical and theological scholarship with spiritual disciplines and practical insights—characterized by a simple, accessible, comprehensive, Reformed, and experiential approach.
D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones once said that what the church needs to do most all is “to begin herself to live the Christian life. If she did that, men and women would be crowding into our buildings. They would say, ‘What is the secret of this?’” As Christians, one of our greatest needs is for the Spirit of God to cultivate biblical godliness in us in order to put the beauty of Christ on display through us, all to the glory of the triune God. With this goal in mind, this series of booklets treats matters vital to Christian experience at a basic level. Each booklet addresses a specific question in order to inform the mind, warm the affections, and transform the whole person by the Spirit’s grace, so that the church may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

Every Christian knows the importance of a daily quiet time with the Lord. But anyone who’s been a believer long enough has likely experienced seasons that feel more mundane or routine, leading to aimlessly skimming a couple of Bible verses or praying the sameprayer over and over.
In Be Thou My Vision, Jonathan Gibson has created a 31-day liturgical guide designed to provide structure to the daily worship of individuals and families. Each daily reading includes a call to worship, adoration, confession, assurance, creed and catechism, the Gloria Patri, a prayer of illumination, Bible reading, intercessory prayer, and the Lord’s Prayer. Designed to be read in 15–20 minutes a day, this beautifully produced liturgy will give readers focus and purpose to their daily quiet time while teaching them historical prayers, creeds, and catechisms that point them to Christ.

The Poor Man’s Morning and Evening Portions
Robert Hawker
Hardcover, 944 pages
Retail Price: $40.00
RHB Price: $30.00
The Poor Man’s Morning and Evening Portions by Robert Hawker (1753–1827) is a Christian devotional classic—named because it was originally published in small “penny” portions affordable to the poor. Hawker created each of these 730 portions as complete devotions that speak directly to your soul. It is unlike most other Reformed daily devotional books that consist of fragmented extracts, you will feel the difference immediately. Hawker excels in Christ-centered practical divinity so read this volume daily and let the Word of God come close to your conscience. Then pray the Spirit will apply these short, savory devotions to your daily and eternal gain.
Leading and nurturing your family as you seek to glorify God and encourage spiritual growth in your home is both God’s command and your privilege. One of the best and most effective ways to do this is through intentional, worshipful, daily family devotions where the truths of God’s life-changing Word are openly discussed chapter by chapter.
Hand in hand with your Bible, this Family Worship Bible Guide presents rich devotional thoughts on all 1,189 chapters in the Bible, including searching questions to promote conversation, to help you with this responsibility. Use this resource every day alongside Scripture to read each chapter’s major takeaways aloud and then discuss them with your family.
With the Holy Spirit’s blessing, this book will transform you and your family!

“My favorite part of the Reformation Heritage Study Bible was the thoughts for family/personal worship at the end of each chapter. I wished there was a book that only had these, to my delight I found this book.
“I highly recommend this book, great thoughts, questions and application for every chapter of the bible. I am using it for personal devotions but look forward to using it for family worship and will use it for a lifetime.”

“In the Family Worship Bible Guide, you have a book that will help you lead your family devotions with the truth of Scripture.
“The beauty of this book is that it looks at the entirety of Scripture, providing simple sentence summaries of the main points in each chapter. Lessons are given, Scripture is cross-referenced, and questions are asked to help further the discussion. It is a simple guide that is rich in the Word. What I appreciated most about the guide was the commentary for the books of wisdom literature. Spending time in the Psalms and Proverbs is a daily devotional practice for many, and this guide will help deepen your understanding of the text. It will grow you closer to God.
“Outside of using this book as a guide for family worship, you can use this to get an overview of Scripture, use it to prepare for sermons, use it to help with small groups, and use it to enhance your personal Bible study. It’s small enough to keep at your desk, in your backpack, or at your bedside.”

“A must-have companion for daily Bible readings and devotions.”

Commentary on the Old and New Testament, 5 vols.
John TrappHardcover, 3,912 pages
Retail Price: $280.00
RHB Price: $210.00
John Trapp’s Commentary on the Old and New Testaments, a classic Puritan exposition of Scripture, combines explanation of the text, articulation of doctrine, discussions of controversies, and clarification of cases of conscience. Full of colorful paraphrases and captivating illustrations, Trapp’s pithy style makes him highly quotable and a handy resource for preachers. As a bonus, this set contains four practical books by Trapp that are appended to various volumes:
• God’s Love-Tokens and The Afflicted Man’s Lessons
• The Righteous Man’s Recompense
• Theologia Theologiae: The True Treasure; or, a Treasury of Holy Truths Touching God’s Word and God the Word
• Mellificium Theologicum: The Marrow of Many Good Authors
“Would it be possible to eulogize too much the incomparably sententious and suggestive folios of John Trapp? Trapp will be most valuable to men of discernment, to thoughtful men, to men who only want a start in a line of thought and are then able to run alone.
“Trapp excels in witty stories on the one hand and learned allusions on the other. You will not thoroughly enjoy him unless you can turn to the original, and yet a mere dunce at classics will prize him. His writings remind me of himself: he was a pastor, hence his holy practical remarks; he was the head of a public school, and everywhere we see his profound scholarship; he was for some time amid the guns and drums of a parliamentary garrison, and he gossips and tells unusual anecdotes like a man used to a soldier’s life; yet withal, he comments as if he had been nothing else but a commentator all his days. Trapp is my especial companion and treasure; I can read him when I am too weary for anything else.”

In The Testimony of the Four Gospels, O. Palmer Robertson emphasizes the eyewitness character of the four men who attest to the supernatural in-breaking of the Christ. In the rich tapestry of the Gospels, we see Christ overcome the powers of Satan, gradually unveil his identity by words and works, call and commission disciples, die on the cross, be raised, and ascend to heaven. By each witnessing distinctive aspects of the coming of the King and the establishment of his kingdom, the gospel writers boldly describe a new phase in redemptive revelation.

Contributors such as Joel Beeke, Ligon Duncan, Michael Horton, and Robert Letham write out of their experience both as pastors and theologians, providing a pattern of rich biblical-theological reflection that a vibrant ministry demands and that those engaged in ministry need in order to be sustained in their work.
