The Suit It all starts with the suit two, in fact. suit is the most important clothing investment you ll ever ma e. lean, neat and comfortable, a suit is the uniform of success that inspires confidence. oday s suits are trim not tight under the arm, hug the shoulder, fit slightly narrower through the sleeve and are paired with pants whose silhouette follow the line and proportions of the ac et.

Here’s an inside look at how you can build a professional wardrobe with just a few essentials.

If you own only one suit, choose a medium weight, all season grey suit in a high twist wrin le resistant pure wool fabric. ou can cover the full year with a mid grey, ban er s grey or charcoal grey in either a plain fabric or one with a tiny pattern. ersatile, neutral grey is less star than blac . It wor s beautifully for day and evening with a variety of shirt colours, and it pairs nicely with blac or brown shoes. lus, the ac et can be worn separately with trousers or eans. eanwhile, an elegant, well fitted navy suit lets a man ma e a statement without saying a word. owadays, the navy suit is worn with more than a white shirt. he addition of colour through your shirt, tie and poc et s uare adds energy and sophistication that will eep you in style. Shirts and Ties hirts and ties are the spice in your two suit wardrobe. hosen strategically, your shirt selection will ma imize your options for dressing each day. ith two suits, the ideal ratio is si shirts and four ties, which provides a shirt for every business day plus an e tra. tart with two white shirts, and then build your inventory around a colour theme. iversify within your colour scheme by choosing a selection of classic patterns, including a solid, a gingham or attersall chec , a engal stripe and a ban er s stripe. Ties ith ties, start with a beautiful plain in a subtle tone that coordinates with your core shirt colour, then add a stripe and one with a small medallion, all of which will wor with your shirt choices. rom there, choose a blue pattern paisley or floral or a new colour, li e a red, burgundy, pin or yellow. You’re All Set ith these basics, you ve got wee s of clothing before you ll grow tired of dressing for wor each day.

Look around you. Whether you’re at a rock concert, a park, or having dinner at an elegant restaurant, the chances are pretty good that someone around you is using their cellphone to take a photo. There seems to be a growing need for us to record our lives; perhaps for someone else to see where we were and what we are doing. Sometimes, though, it’s just to get a great picture!

I have a few suggestions to help those who wish to get a great shot with his or her smartphone. fter all, the best camera is the one in your hand at the time the picture is conceived.

Look Toward the Light elfies wor better if the bac of the phone is toward the sun and you are facing toward the light.

Clean the Lens emove the debris on the lens, which ma es your images soft, almost as if you are loo ing through a foggy window. o not reach for the nearest piece of paper towel. ently wipe the lens clean with a wipe made for eyeglasses.

Did you enjoy the unseasonably warm autumn we were blessed with this year? Yes? That’s good. Because according to the Canada Farmer’s Almanac, Old M an Winter isn’t going to be so kind. We’re talking bone-chilling, teeth-chatting temp eratures — an old-fashioned Canadian deep freez e. 55 88

“IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR BODY, EXERCISE. IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE, BECOME A RUNNER.” — UNKNOWN If you’re a runner, you might be temp ted to trade the snow-covered roads for a treadmill in a climate-controlled gym this winter. Don’t. With the right gear, nothing comp ares to an outdoor run; the fresh air and Vitamin D may be all you need to avoid the all-to-common winter blues. An added bonus? You can blast the fat that seems to easily accumulate easily during the cold winter months. We’ve rounded up a few necessities for p ounding the p avement to make sure you’ll stay safe and warm this winter. START ON THE RIGHT FOOT The right p air of shoes ensures you can take on the snowiest, iciest roads with ease. To stay safe, toasty and dry, op t for kicks with p icks on the sole, and Gore-Tex and waterp roofed up p ers. Try on several p airs to ensure they’re not only comfortable, but also lightweight, breathable and offer lots of cushion. Need some extra motivation to get out the door on a dark winter’s morning? Choose a colourful p air of runners; they may just give you the extra boost you need when you’d rather duck back under the warm blankets. With winter’s shorter days, early mornings and evenings — p op ular running times — are dar e ective ear ill ensure drivers can sp ot you in the darkest of conditions. T Look for leggings with heat-trap p ing construction to keep you warm. They’ll help you avoid that awful stinging sensation that follows during your hot p ost-run shower. Bottoms with stretch and moisture-wicking p rop erties are equally imp ortant; even though it’s cold out, you’ll still sweat. M oisture wicking will ensure you can dial up our or out even hen the sno is in For even more warmth, look for a running skirt that’s wind-resistant and will trap all the

heat where we seem to need it the most: our thighs and bum. T Look for clothing that offers breathability, aterproofin and thermal insulation t ma seem like a lot to ask of your clothing, but the trick is layering. r startin ith a fitted shirt that offers moisture wicking to keep you dry and comfortable, and toppin it off ith a eece p ullover for added warmth. Finally, add a cos , do n filled vest ou ll still have ran e of motion, but you’ll be p rotected from the harsh winter elements. ORIE ACCESSORIE o outfit is complete ithout accessories — even when it comes to your running ensemble. e in ith findin a hat, headband or balaclava to p revent heat loss. Remember that keep ing your ears covered is key; the cold temp eratures and wind can cause major discomfort and for some, even p ain. To ensure they’re well p rotected, look for hats with contoured ear coverage. M any comp anies, such as ASICS, Nike and the North Face, offer p lenty of op tions that are breathable, lightweight and can easily be tucked into a p ocket if you begin to overheat. When it comes to gloves, look for op tions that not only rep el wind, but also fend off water for added warmth. Some comp anies even offer technology-friendly thumb and forefin er tips so ou can trac our kilometres and crank up your tunes with ease ic a pair ith re ective strips if you’re p lanning to run in the dark. When it comes to wine,

its vintage is key. It’s the most salient factor in determining the quality of the product. And yet, there are many misconceptions about what, exactly, vintage wine is. To lessen the confusion, we spoke with Brian Hanna, the in-house sommelier at Huff Estates. What is a Wine’s Vintage? “ A wine’s vintage simp ly tells you which year the grap es were grown and harvested,” exp lains Hanna, exp ertly p ouring me a scrump tious merlot to samp le while we chat. Contrary to p op ular belief, Hanna tells me a wine’s vintage has nothin to do ith the ear the ine finall comes to the market. “ It is essentially the birth certificate of the ine, he clarifies So can a wine still be decent, or even ood, ithout havin a specific vinta e “ Some winemakers can make the case that p roducing non-vintage wines allow them to take what is best from every vintage and build up on their strengths,” exp lains Hanna. “ It’s not a case of making an inferior wine, but making the best p ossible wine he or she can from their grap es.” So the next time you p ick up a bottle of vintage wine, you might wonder if you should p op the cork straight away, or cellar it to enjoy later. Wonder no more. “ One can safely say 9 5 p er cent of the vintage wines offered at your LCBO are ready to be consumed that evening,” sa s anna Vastl improved vinification methods have p aved the way to instant ratification lue chip ines orth of aging account for roughly 5 p er cent of vintage wines on the worldwide market.” Ontario Vintage Wines A huge fan of Ontario wines myself, I had to know if our p rovince is suitable for p roducing vintage wines. “ In varying degrees, of course,” says Hanna. “ Ontario is home to cool-climate viticulture. It is a

uestion of findin the ri ht rape that is best nurtured given the soil and sun-units we receive.” In Prince Edward County, for examp le, ineries find cla or loam or marl over limestone. “ Limestone p rovides the key,” says Hanna, adding that certain grap e varietals do best – Chardonnay for whites, Pinot Noir for reds. However, Niagara boasts world class Rieslings and stellar cabernet francs. Common M isconcep tions M isconcep tions abound when it comes to wines, exp lains Hanna. However, one issue continues to engender controversy and discontent: the ‘ cellared in Canada’ label fiasco t is a desi nation that allo s Canadian Vintners to imp ort up to 75 p er cent of grap es from abroad to Ontario and 100 p er cent in British Columbia under the ‘ cellared in Canada’ signage,” he says. “ These ‘ cellared in Canada’ wines are often p ositioned next to VQ A wines, comp ounding the misinformation for the wine consumer, and is in fact, grossly misleading.” These p roducts, says Hanna, often in the $ 11 p er bottle p rice range, may have labels that read ‘ a blend of Canadian and International grap es.’ “ It is imp ortant to note here that a wine made with foreign juice, bottled in Canada by a Canadian winery in a Canadian cellar does not mean that the wine is Canadian,” says Hanna. His best advice? Look for the VQ A label. It tells ou the rapes are ro n and vinified entirely in Ontario or British Columbia. It’s essentially your ‘ good housekeep ing seal of ap p roval.’

If you re tac ling a itchen renovation this fall or building a new home, there s a good chance choosing and installing new countertops will be one of the items to chec off your to do list. ill it be granite, or uartz hile it all comes down to personal taste, here are few things to thin about before ma ing a purchase.

Granite

Granite, or quartz? While it all comes down to personal taste, here are few things to think about before making a purchase.

If it s properly installed, your granite countertop will be the last countertop you ever need to install in your home.

Q uartz uartz also called engineered stone is incredibly popular among today s homeowners, perhaps because it s seen so much on home renovation shows.

ranite is my personal favourite I have it in every room in my home. ecause it s a natural stone, it can withstand incredible amounts of heat and abuse which is perfect if you re a lutzy coo . It s second only to diamonds in terms of hardness in natural materials. If you somehow manage to scratch or chip granite, it s usually repairable.

It s incredibly durable and shouldn t scratch or stain it stands up well to everything from uice and oil to wine, tomato sauce and coffee, for e ample , and there are endless designs and colours to choose from. hen it comes to uartz, you ll easily be able to find something to go with any style of itchen.

ontrary to popular belief, most granites do not have to be sealed. I li e to compare it to wa ing your car wa ing isn t necessary, but it helps to protect your vehicle and eep it clean. ealing granite eeps your countertop sanitary and closes up natural pores, so it won t absorb anything li e that second glass of cabernet sauvignon that spills on its surface.

hile uartz is perfect for those who have a preference for uniform colour and a rich and lu urious loo , it s important to note it s simply not uite as durable as granite. ou have to be mindful of placing hot pots and pans directly on its surface. re you a perfectionist eep in mind that seams are sometimes less noticeable in uartz countertops.

any homeowners myself included li e that it s a natural stone that was made by nature over thousands of years. Its one of a ind, organic beauty simply cannot be recreated by any machines. ach slab is uni ue in colour and characteristics, and can have mineral inclusions and veining that contribute to its unrivaled beauty. ou can stare at some of the colours for hours. It s li e having a van ogh painting in your itchen.

efore ma ing your decision, be sure to spea with a professional to discuss your options. hey ll be able to guide you and ensure you end up with a countertop you ll love for years to come.

A Le Creuset Casserole Dish Having a quality-made casserole dish is important to me. They’re perfect for hosting large crowds; I can prepare the food in the morning, and simply pop the dish in the oven when company arrives. No more dashing back and forth to the kitchen!

A Cute Teap ot There’s not much a cup of tea can’t fix…so imagine what a whole pot can do! Working from my home office, I’ve been known to keep a teapot and a mug on my desk for a soothing drink when I’m on a tight deadline.

editor's five fall favourites Baskets ( Lots of them! ) Never underestimate the power of a decorative basket like this one in sea-grass. During the winter, they’re especially great for quickly stashing hats and mittens out of sight.

Now that the cold months are here, I'm all about creature comforts. Whether that's a warm balnket and a good book or the scent of a bubbling lasagna roasting in the oven, I love anything and everything that's considered cosy. Here are a few of my favourites.

A Soy Candle Cleaner-burning and longer-lasting than petroleum-based paraffin candles, soy candles are scented with essential oils, and emit a light scent that’s not too overpowering. They are the perfect addition to every room in the home.

A Cosy Blanket On chilly evenings, there’s nothing better than curling up in front of the fire with a glass of red wine, a good novel and a soft, warm blanket like this cashmere knit in a calming, neutral colour like oatmeal.

If you’re crossing the border to the U.S. or another destination, it is important to ensure you have the proper Out-of-Country (OOC) emergency medical insurance.

W

ith the summer behind us, kids back at school and the leav es changing colour, plans to get away from our cold winters are soon to be in full swing. If you’ re crossing the border to the U .S . or another destination, it is important to ensure you hav e the proper O ut-of-Country ( O O C) emergency medical insurance. This cov erage protects you from the high medical costs of hav ing an unex pected or unforeseen medical emergency while outside your home prov ince or country. There may also be some coordination serv ices included your cov erage ( ie: returning rental cars, childcare for children of a parent who is hospitalized, flying a loved one to be with an insured person who is hospitaliz ed for a number of days, etc.) .

Typ ically, there are two ways to secure this coverage: Group Insurance: If you are covered by an employee benefits plan with your employer, you likely hav e O O C insurance within the healthcare cov erage* . S tandard O O C cov erage within a group insurance plan will cov er the employee and their dependents year-round with a max imum per trip limitation of 6 0 days and an ov erall cov erage max imum ( generally from $ 1,0 0 0 ,0 0 0 to U nlimited) . Individual Travel Plans: If you are self-employed, do not hav e access to group insurance cov erage through your employer or are retired, you will need to

inv estigate your options for a personaliz ed emergency out of country insurance plan. These types of cov erage can be tailored to your trav el plans. D o you need cov erage for a single trip, an annual plan that allows you to take a number of trips with certain per trip duration limitations, or maybe a combination of both? M eeting with an insurance adv isor can help you determine the type of cov erage that is right for you. Pre-existing Conditions: A s mentioned at the beginning of this article, O O C insurance prov ides cov erage for ex penses arising from unex pected and unforeseen medical emergencies. If you hav e a medical condition that you are being treated for or hav e recently been treated for, a medical emergency arising from that condition may not be eligible for cov erage if it is considered unstable. G enerally, the stability clause states any new condition for which an indiv idual is treated for or a change in treatment for an ongoing condition within 9 0 days of departure would not be eligible for cov erage. Ex amples of an unstable condition could be one where you hav e receiv ed treatment from a medical professional or simply changed the dosage or freq uency of an ongoing medication. It is important to note if you hav e an unstable condition, it would only be emergencies as a result of this condition that would not be cov ered; other unrelated medical emergencies would be eligible. * D isclaimer: Ev ery insurance policy is different. If you hav e q uestions about your cov erage, talk to your insurer prior to trav eling outside of Canada
