When I’m chatting with people from our community, one of the questions I’m most frequently asked is, “Why did you start your magazine in Kingston?” The truth is, Kingston chose us — and we’ve never looked back.

It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since my husband Gerry and I moved to the city with our three children Eric, Breanna and Ashlynn after Gerry was posted to CFB Kingston. It wasn’t only a chance for Gerry to further his now 23-year military career, but an opportunity for me to put a plan in motion to bring a new magazine to this amazing city.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF’S FIRST WORD I can’t begin to express how excited I am to be launching this inaugural issue of ReFINEd Kingston Magazine. What you’re holding in your hands is the end result of months of hard work on behalf of an amazing team; a team that has become more like a family since we began working together for Fine Lifestyles Magazine in 2013. When I took some time off earlier this year for maternity leave after the birth of my daughter Chloe, I couldn’t have dreamed I’d have the chance to work on a new-andimproved version of what we once were. We’ve happily re-branded, and are excited to share with you all the changes we’ve made. This magazine truly belongs to you, Kingston. It’s all about our city’s amazing people, businesses and events that make the Limestone City the true delight that it is to live in. We’re so lucky to call this place home. While you may be welcoming old man winter somewhat begrudgingly, I hope you welcome the first issue of ReFINEd Kingston Magazine with open arms. We’re so excited to start anew and share our passion for the city of Kingston with you. Happy reading!

STYLE & BEAUTY INSTANTLY REVIVE YOUR HAIR AND SENSES

Party-Perfect Looks For The

HOLIDAY SEASON

W

ith all the parties and get-togethers that take place during the holidays, it can be difficult to pull together a cocktail-worthy look every time. But with a few style staples, you’ll be lighting up the room and making a style statement all your own during the festive season.

Style With Sequins

Nothing screams “fabulous” quite like sequins. Lending a sparkling allure to any outfit, the style staple seems to make a triumphant return during the holidays year after year. Avoid looking like a disco ball by keeping your accessories subtle; you don’t want to overwhelm other party guests.

Luxurious Lace

Pretty and utterly feminine, lace remains a style staple in many women’s wardrobes — and for good reason. Want to shake it up? While it’s timeless 8

and pretty, forego the typical little black dress and opt for something colourful. If there’s ever a time to rock a little red number, it’s now.

Fabulous Fur

Whether real or faux, there’s a timeless and elegant quality about fur. Wrap yourself up in a luxurious shawl to fend off the cold or button up in an anklelength coat; either way, you’re sure to turn some heads this holiday season.

Astonishing Accessories

Be ready for holiday parties for years to come by investing in well-made and timeless accessories. Diamonds, as we all know, are a girl’s best friend, so deck the halls by investing in something seriously sparkly. Are you traditional? Opt for something clear and colourless with simple, clean lines. Are you more of a trendsetter? Coloured diamonds will lend an exquisite, unique look to any holiday outfit. RK

Dita Von Teese once said, “Lingerie is not about seducing men, it’s about embracing womanhood.” Joanne Angelis, style maven at House of Angelis, couldn’t agree more.

Simone Pérèle’s designs feature intricate lace that is first hand drawn by designers, and then manually sewn to perfection. Not only are the finished products beautiful – they are well constructed. “They do what they’re supposed to do,” says Angelis. “They give women the support and the shape they need.” Many women who require hard-to-buy-for sizes are always surprised at how they can find something that is beautiful also does the job, she adds. “That’s the most important thing I’ve been trying to offer,” she says.” Prima Donna carries sizes many women have trouble finding; they carry up to an “I” cup size. “What’s amazing is how these women are able to put something on and feel good about themselves. That’s really the best part about it for me,” says Angelis.

Luxury Lingerie

This December, House of Angelis will amaze customers with a selection of stunning sleep and loungewear. “It’s just incredible,” says Angelis. Perfect for lazing by the fire on a cold winter’s day, “It’s the softest, most luxurious fabric you have ever felt,” says Angelis. “It’s beautiful but comfortable. It’s crossing over from the sexy stuff, which we all like to wear from time to time, but this is nice and soft, and it still looks really, really good.” Bamboo, she says, is one of the most popular fabrics. There will also be a selection of sleepwear items for men, making it easy to both give and get during the holiday season. RK

ingerie may not be visible to the naked eye, but when a woman has on something that’s both comfortable and sexy beneath her clothing, she carries herself confidently, says Angelis. “It’s not just about the fashion,” she says, rearranging a display of beautiful, lacy bras from Belgium. “It’s about you feeling good. Even though nobody else sees it, you feel good about yourself.” One of Brock Street’s signature stores, House of Angelis has become more than a fashion emporium for women seeking

size differently, it’s not an exact science, but I can see when a women feels good in something. If you can put your clothing back on and feel and look good, we’ve done the job.”

Having recently undergone an expansion, the lingerie department at House of Angelis offers women a spectacular selection of luxurious lingerie designed to hug women’s curves in all the right ways. “It’s so important,” stresses Angelis. “You shouldn’t be struggling with a bra every day. It should not be the first thing you whip off your body at the end of the day. Shops

With a varied selection of lingerie from well-established and respected companies like Belgium’s Prima Donna and Paris’ Simone Pérèle, the girls at House of Angelis understand a woman’s love of beautiful things and fine fabrics. “The right lingerie makes a woman feel good, sexy and beautiful,” says Angelis.

Periods of transition present themselves at every stage of life, and navigating these successfully should lead to answering some important questions: Would my family still be okay financially if something happened to me? How much do I need to retire comfortably and how do I protect what I’ve saved? How can I reduce tax on my retirement income? Can I live well and still leave an inheritance? here’s always excitement at the thought of seeing loved ones during the Christmas season (and if you’re lucky, a few days off of work), but the holidays can also bring with them a sense of anxiety and pressure. The selfless act of gift giving can become a huge source of holiday angst, but there is a way to approach holiday shopping in an organized fashion.

Stress-Free Holiday Shopping the holidays and try to get your family involved. Buy in bulk You can give the same thing to a group of people. For example, the teachers at your children’s school can get a gift card from a local coffee shop, while the members of your book club could receive a pretty bookmark.

Plan ahead Take control of the season and own it. Do you want to finish your shopping early, or slide into the finish line just before the big guy arrives? Everything is within your control — you just have to create a plan. It’s best to make a list of whom you’re shopping for, along with an idea of what you’d like to give them. Your plan may change during your venture, but your list will serve as a handy guide.

Wrap gifts ahead of time Check out local gift-wrapping centres, which often support a local charity through your donation. Although there is a cost involved, consider the time you’ve saved and the charity you supported. If you love wrapping gifts, wrap them immediately after purchasing them.

In addition to planning your shopping list, it’s best to set a budget ahead of time. Be realistic about what is feasible and avoid relying on your credit card to pay for items.

Be ready for next Christmas Don’t wait until the last minute. Don’t even wait until the start of the holiday season; begin your shopping trips in January when everything is on sale. It means less stress for you, and you can save some serious cash.

Remember shopping is just one part of the puzzle Although we are focusing on an organized approach to holiday shopping, it is important to note the other tasks you must accomplish for the big day. You would not want to get your shopping list written, but forget to clean the house for company. Make a list of important tasks you must complete leading up to

It is so easy to feel pressured by all of the commercials advertising the latest and greatest toys and gadgets, but it is important to remember the true meaning of the season. As Calvin Coolidge once said, “Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.” Spiral Into Control Kingston 613.985.4674 www.spiralintocontrol.org

ersonalizing menswear has finally become popular. Whether it’s a pocket square; a set of cuff links; a tie; a lapel pin; belt; fedora or a pair of shoes, there are endless options for guys who want to express their own sense of style. It’s hard to go wrong, but here are some simple steps to navigate the task of accessorizing for upcoming festivities: Pocket Squares - Once a functional and practical item, pocket squares are now a fashionable mainstay of the jacket pocket. Whether your jacket has a built-in one or not, there are now an array of fabrics, colours and patterns to choose from. The key thing to remember is that it should never be the crucial statement that defines the look. If in doubt, match it to your shirt. Think of it more as an afterthought that completes — like sauce on a steak. It should add to the overall look, not detract or become the focus.

Cuff Links – An indispensable item in any gentlemen’s wardrobe, cuff links are often reserved for special occasions or formal events. And yet, more shirts are being designed these days with a convertible cuff — allowing cufflinks to get more playtime.

Although they aren’t necessarily the star of the show, when you reach to shake a hand or adjust your sleeve, they offer a flash that says to those in-the-know that you’re a guy who gets it, and is cool down to the details. From cuff links with classic, sophisticated lines to cuff links reading the breed of your canine BFF, they should reflect your individuality. Ties - Ties are the best supporting actor in an outfit. These days, shapes are narrower than before, and there are more fabrics in play with the return of the knit tie. It’s one of the first things that catches someone’s eye, and can be the smallest detail that takes your well-executed outfit from 2015 back to 1999. When in doubt, go for something classic like a solid, a timeless stripe or a small, sophisticated pattern. Some knit ties tend to be better for a more casual look. Just make sure it doesn’t have reindeers or a hula girl on it — unless it’s that kind of party. Lapel Pins - Not sure what a lapel pin is? Originally designed to replace boutonnieres, lapel pins are worn on the left lapel of your suit, blazer, sport coat or overcoat. The design varies depending on the wearer. Just remember it isn’t meant to distract — keep it simple and cool.

tep into the largest Canadianowned jewellery store and you’ll quickly see that bridal rings are their specialty. Charm Diamond Centres carries many lines of top quality bridal rings to suit every taste and style. They also make it easy for customers to confidently shop within their budget by visibly pricing everything and by creating a welcoming environment where getting good value and service are of paramount importance. Charm Diamond Centres, founded by Richard Calder, offers several stunning lines of diamond rings including Glacier Fire Canadian Diamonds, Victor Diamonds of Ontario, LeVian and now his Signature Collection, Charmed by Richard Calder. Launched last November, Charmed by Richard Calder is a unique designer bridal line. It’s the first designer line for Canadians by a Canadian.

From the moment you say, “Yes” your engagement ring becomes a beautiful symbol of the one you promise to love forever. It’s a token of the memories you have and the memories you’ll make together. For more than 40 years, Charm Diamond Centres has helped Canadians through this process to help celebrate and commemorate all of life’s biggest moments. 20

ReFINEdKINGSTON

“Although I’ve been designing rings for years, I’ve never put my name to a collection,” says Calder. “These designs are influenced by styles from all around the world, though I prefer to keep the collection close to Canadian trends and stay true to the use of Canadian materials.” Calder designed rings for years before introducing Canadians to the Charmed Collection. Each ring is born from

Calder’s vision and personal sketch, and then transferred to wax, and finally the completed ring is created where every detail is considered. Calder designed all the rings in Charmed with precision and strict attention to detail. Each centre stone is a hand selected, high quality Canadian diamond, which is then set in 100 per cent Canadian gold. There is also a small Canadian diamond embedded on the inside of the band to caress the skin. The collection itself is truly one of a kind. From the beginning, Calder’s mission has been to, “Win the Customer for Life.” He believes providing excellent customer service and the best price is key to making that happen. “Our buying power gives us the ability to have an unbeatable pricing policy and we’re very competitively priced for value. We like to think of ourselves as an affordable luxury jeweller.” The Company has grown from its humble beginnings. The first store opened in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and the Company grew quickly and expanded throughout Atlantic Canada, later moving into Ontario and the Western provinces. Charm Diamond Centres is now in every Canadian province except British Columbia and Quebec. Most recently, Charm Diamond Centres opened its 74th

store in Oshawa, Ont., and the company now employs more than 700 people across the country. Charm Diamond Centres has invested heavily in continuous learning, leading and coaching. Their sales associates have been well trained to manage all your jewellery needs. In fact, each store has designated ‘diamontologists’ who

are certified diamond experts. “We have always really cared about how our people were treated,” says Calder. “We are proud to have many long term, experienced employees, in fact, a few have been with us well over 30 years!” Calder’s commitment to both his employees and customers led to Charm Diamond Centres being bestowed with

the prestigious Canada’s Best Managed Companies designation in 2008, and now have been named a platinum member of the distinctive program. Calder was also awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2007 and is an inductee into the Nova Scotia Business Hall of Fame. After many years in the jewellery business, Calder’s passion for beautiful jewellery

has not diminished. “It’s very fulfilling to see customers appreciate the designs and styles we’ve chosen,” he says, “and it’s exciting to see customers wearing our products and loving them.” Whether you’re looking for something from their Glacier Fire Canadian Diamond line, which is a premium brand of Canadian diamonds, or LeVian, featuring the rich chocolate diamonds that are so often seen on the Red Carpet at high profile events, or perhaps Chamilia charm bracelets, men’s wedding bands, or watches by Michael Kors, Guess, Citizen and Bulova, the staff at Charm Diamond Centres will be prepared to help you. WEDDINGS

Plan Your Happily Ever After In Style:

While you may want your big day to be timelessly elegant, you might also wish to incorporate some of the year’s hottest trends to give it an of-the-moment feel. We spoke to some of Kingston’s in-the-know wedding experts who were able to give us some insight into what 2016 will hold for brides and grooms as they head down the aisle, and how to plan the perfect honeymoon for afterwards.

Bridal Trends For 2016 To Inspire Your Big Day Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

Wedding Gowns

Tuxedos

“Satin is making a comeback,” says Michelle Pilon, owner of Lovebird Bridal Boutique. “Satin will adorn simple and timeless gowns with clean, sleek lines this season,” she explains. Meanwhile, overskirts offer versatility with the ability to have two gowns in one. Such separates allow you to mix and match your favourite top and bottom to create a look that is truly you. For added interest and dimension, consider layered skirts. For an overall softness, flowing fabrics are the way to go.

Sleek and slim cuts are in, says Stephen Murano, owner of Murano’s Formalwear. “The lapels on the jackets are more of a slimmer width, which extenuates a more slim-fit,” he explains, adding that now more than ever, suits are becoming customized to their wearer, with the sides of the jackets brought in for an added customized look. A one-button jacket is also in fashion now, because the style always hits the wearer at his more flattering areas. As for the length, consider a shorter jacket. The style shows more leg and makes you look taller. What about colour? The grey suit is still trendy, says Murano, however, various shades of blue are growing more popular. Consider a shade of navy or midnight blue for stunning visual impact.

Hair “Soft, effortless styles and updos became popular in 2015 and they aren’t going anywhere,” says Ceilidh Mcleod, senior stylist at Diva Salon and Day Spa. “By stepping away from super sleek and structured updos, it enables the bride to have that special look they want while still feeling like themselves. Braids mixed into buns, and curls pulled away from the face are a great look for texture and an individual look.”

Flowers A trend that has been around for a couple of years is the use of burlap and babies’ breath in bouquets, as well as the use of mason jars for table arrangements, says Helene Tohill, owner of Plants and Pots - Flowers and Fine Gifts. “People are embracing the simple country look,” she explains. Very soft colours of blush that include hydrangeas, roses and Queen Anne’s lace hand-tied with delicate greens are extremely popular and will continue to be in 2016.

t’s that time of year again. Parties, get-togethers, work functions, luncheons and familial obligations creep up to compete with the small amount of time not dedicated a seemingly endless list of seasonal chores. Amidst all this, you also need to figure out what to wear to all these events without appearing to be wearing the same ‘tried and true’ outfit to them all. Now is the time to pull your outfits out of the closet and make sure they are clean and ready to wear as needed. Work and other professional events can be hard to navigate. Go for a look that is business appropriate, but dressed up. Depending on your workplace culture, you may be mingling at an upscale restaurant or going bowling. However, there are some simple rules to bear in mind when it comes to dressing for workplace gatherings. Watch the alcohol intake, and don’t wear anything more risqué than you would feel comfortable wearing at the office. It may be a denim-friendly get-together, but it’s not the place for seduction and it certainly isn’t the place to ruin your well-

theme. According to many wedding experts, a theme is what ties your wedding together and can help guide your decisions for the big day.

ReFINEd Kingston is here to help kickstart your bridal busyness. Now, get ready to say, “I do!” to planning the best day of your life.

crafted professional image. Rock those tights and high boots, or add some bling with a statement necklace. Just remember to keep the cleavage moderate and hemlines appropriate. If your hemline is shorter than your fingertips with your arms by your side, it’s too short for this type of get-together. If the party calls for nothing more specific than festive attire, don’t dig out grandma’s Christmas sweater just yet. Think ‘razzle dazzle’— not Christmas tree earrings. Spiff it up by adding a little colour and stepping away from uniform black. If you don’t have a dazzling holiday dress, add a colourful or glitzy scarf. Brighten up that LBD with a vibrant cardigan or novelty jacket. Accessorize with interesting shoes or a fun fascinator for your hair. Pair a great staple item from your closet with a piece that may be too much for everyday wear. If after all this you’re still not sure, ask around. Call the host, ask others who are going, find out where the party is and what the dress code dictates. My easy go-to is a sparkly skirt, black cashmere sweater and a novelty jacket. It’s appropriate for work events, and for the party afterwards.

Rustic Charm

arn weddings have never been more popular. One might even go so far as to call it a “rustic revolution”. The charming country setting appeals to many brides and grooms because it allows wedding guests to enjoy a casual vibe from the walk down the aisle to the first delicious sip of champagne. Bare wooden tables topped with Mason jars, flickering candles and burlap are always in keeping with such a theme, but there’s nothing wrong with taking it one step further. Perhaps add a touch of vintage lace to that ever-popular burlap for a classier, elegant feel while still maintaining your overall vision. You may even wish to replace the somewhat overdone Mason jars with antique crystal-cut vases. What about the dress? Lace, lace and more lace. Eternally

ARRIVE in Style By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

As the saying goes, “Getting there is half the fun.” Refined Kingston is here to help you arrive in style to your wedding and ensure bridal bliss en route. Consider Your Options

“The right transportation should give your day a relaxed flow, helping you keep to your itinerary and adding elegance to the overall wedding experience,” says Tammy Turcotte, coowner of ExecuTrans Corporate Transportation. A specialty vehicle, like a vintage car, horse and carriage or a trolley, is a statement piece, adds her partner, co-owner Trevor Turcotte. “It’s a reflection of the bride and groom’s personalities [and highlights their] theme,” he explains.

Vintage Vibes

With the ever-increasing popularity of vintage-themed weddings, there’s no shortage of choices for brides and grooms. Feel the wind in your veil as you zoom to the church in a vintage convertible. If you’re concerned about a meticulously coiffed updo, opt for a hardtop ride instead. A Rolls-Royce is a timeless choice, while an Aston Martin promises to be equally elegant.

Luxury Limos

Forget the staid limos of days-gone-by. Today’s limos cater to wedding parties in endlessly wonderful ways. Super-stretch limos feature flatscreen televisions, surround-sound audio systems and even fibre optic lighting — they’re the ultimate in comfort. Pop the cork on a bottle of wine from the mini-bar, and relish in the unbeatable luxury.

Party Bus

These most certainly are not the yellow busses you might remember from your childhood. Today’s party busses not only accommodate large groups of people, they cater to wedding parties with one thing on their minds: fun. From ‘disco-esque’ lighting to surround sound speakers, the party can go on long after the reception ends when you’re aboard one of these tricked out rides.

A Few Things to Consider

Your wedding day should be all about romance, so consider hiring a car for just you and your sweetie. “Your wedding is a day of being in the spotlight and hosting a large group of people,” says Trevor. “When [couples have their own] vehicle to take them from the ceremony to photos and then to dinner, it gives the newlyweds a few minutes of private time to reflect on their first minutes as husband and wife or just breathe,” says Trevor. And don’t forget about a vehicle to get home in after you’ve danced the night away with a glass of champagne in your hand. “Often, the end of the evening is forgotten about,” says Tammy. “Couples have had drivers all day but don’t have a vehicle at the reception. You don’t want to be left having to catch a ride or call a cab. An ‘end of the evening’ service will ensure you, along with your gifts, flowers and decorations arrive home safely.

And don’t forget about your guests. “Having a shuttle for out of town guests staying at hotels is an easy and convenient way for them to enjoy your wedding to the fullest,” says Trevor. “This gives the bride and groom piece of mind that everyone is taken home safely.” Before you reserve a vehicle, keep in mind that it’s important to book with a reputable and insured transportation company. “They have the experience to make your day relaxed, allowing you to enjoy all the amazing moments,” says Tammy. Before you call, she adds, consider how many people you are looking to move, and how much time you might need the vehicle for. A single venue wedding will require less time of the driver, while a traditional church wedding will require more. RK

If running in the great outdoors during the chilly winter months isn’t your thing, a treadmill might be a good place to start. This stationary machine — which gives you no excuse to avoid a run or a brisk walk — puts you in control by allowing you to control both the effort you want to output and the speed. Incline for more of a challenge, or try a decline to whip those legs into shape. Many treadmills are shockabsorbent to some degree, reducing stress on joints that may prove too tender for hitting the pavement. Another benefit? They allow users to easily track steps, the amount of calories burned and heart rate, making workouts both safer and more effective. If you’re a multitasker, catch up on your favourite television show or read a book while blasting fat at the same time.

Y O U R H E A LT H

Are you more of a pedal-pusher? Easy on the hips and knees, stationary bikes have been a go-to for many home gym owners — and for good reason. Available in a wide variety of sizes, price ranges and styles, they’re a great way to get a super cardio workout without stressing joints. Like any other piece of equipment, start small and work your way up to a more intense workout by adding tension.

Build a BeTTer Home Gym

Like stationary bikes, rowing machines are also easy on joints, and are a great way to safely build and tone muscles. In fact, rowing machines work nearly every major muscle in your body. If weight loss is your goal, rowing is a highly effective way to do it — rowing rapidly torches calories.

and a Better Body

If you want to climb your way to a skinnier self, try a stair climber. Great for all fitness levels, climbers are easy to use, and like the machines mentioned above, allow users to easily control speed and resistance. A non-impact workout, stair climbing is great for both cardiovascular health and weight loss because it increases heart rate.

hen the temperatures plummet during Canadian winters, it’s easy to let fitness habits go into hibernation. Don’t let the chill-inducing weather get the best of your fitness goals — build a better body with a home gym and be summer-ready in just a few short months.

Start With the Basics Whether you’re a gym novice or an experienced pro, start with the basics. All you need is a Swiss ball, a resistance band, a set of dumbbells and a medicine ball to kick start your workout regime.

40

ReFINEdKINGSTON

Swiss balls, also known as stability balls, are one of the most versatile pieces of equipment for a home gym. Portable, lightweight and easy to store, stability balls have proven to be a highly effective tool in helping users develop a solid core — and who doesn’t want that? Tackle basic moves like pushups, squats and planks on this uneven surface and you’ll be well on your way to a better body in no time at all. Resistance bands — which are great for all fitness levels — are not only inexpensive; they’re a fantastic way to build muscle and blast fat. Try a lunge with a bicep curl. You’ll quickly notice how the band forces you to use muscles you might miss with weights alone. Dumbbells, which are equally versatile and easy to use, have proven to be a staple in many home gyms because

they promise an inexpensive way to strengthen and shape muscles. If you want to take your routine to the next level, consider purchasing a Bosu balance trainer. It’s a multi-use piece of equipment that allows you to make your workout regime a little more challenging. If you’re really feeling motivated, try standing on it for a lower body workout while you do upper body exercises such as bicep curls.

Stationary Cardio machines Once you’ve mastered the fundamentals of your get-fit routine, you might wish to make more of an investment in your health and home gym. So where do you start?

Time to Get Started

RK

With dedication and hard work, time spent in your home gym promises stellar results once summer arrives — don’t let Old Man Winter get the best of your health. To avoid injury, start small. Consult a professional before beginning to ensure proper technique. Skipping this important step can result in ripped, strained or pulled muscles.

oesn’t it seem like every year there’s the announcement of a new iPhone, or an incredible new television that hits the market? It’s amazing how quickly new technological advancements drive industry and increase the quality of our lives. The future does seem upon us. The eye care industry is no different. New research and development are continually leading to new technologies that improve the standard of how we, as optometrists, practice and improve both the health and vision of you, the patient.

How we gather, store and analyze data has changed dramatically. For example, electronic medical records are the new standard in maintaining and protecting your patient record. Cutting-edge diagnostic imaging and analysis software allow for earlier diagnosis and detection of ocular disease. This leads to earlier ocular treatment and protection from potential vision loss. A third example is the advent of new computerized refractive techniques that provide you with accurate vision testing and a more precise determination of your glasses prescription.

Even after the exam, there are a host of new products to help you to look and see your best. New ophthalmic lens designs such as anti-fatigue lenses can relieve ocular strain and stress for those with increased visual demands, such as computer users and students. Aspheric lenses and new progressive lens designs reduce peripheral distortion and provide a wider range of clearer vision. Computer-specific anti-reflective coatings protect the eyes from damaging light emitted from digital screens. UV coatings can protect from accumulative damage from the sun that can contribute to the formation of cataracts and macular degeneration. Advancements in contact lenses, particularly in dailies, have improved health and comfort of wear — even for those with mild dry eye. There are more options than ever before – including multifocal lenses, which allow for multiple prescriptions all in one lens, and toric lenses, which are shaped for astigmatism. An increased emphasis on ocular health combined with these new technologies has transformed the eye exam. More than just a visual assessment, regular eye examinations have become an integral part of maintaining your overall health — both for now and with an eye toward the future. or the first time, Canada has more seniors than children making up our population. Our seniors are not just living longer, they are maintaining healthy and independent lifestyles. Good oral health is an integral part of overall well-being and regular visits to the dentist can help maintain this. Our seniors long ago figured out that while a great smile will take you many places, it’s important to be able to eat when you get there! Keeping your mouth healthy for a lifetime is not only possible, it’s an essential part of maintaining your quality of life. Individuals with healthy teeth and gums are able to enjoy a much better diet, which in turn provides the nutrients for better overall health. Regular examinations can help detect problems like cancer, osteoporosis, adverse medication reactions and malnutrition. Early detection and treatment are the keys to minimizing the impact of these diseases. Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a common infection affecting many seniors. Your dental professional can help you control or even eliminate this infection. Controlling gum disease has a positive effect on many other health problems, including diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and heart disease. While none of these problems are unique to seniors, the impact on overall health is perhaps greater. Many older people believe that tooth loss is inevitable as we age. In fact, with proper care, both at home and from your dental professional, your teeth should last a lifetime.

The 2016 Kingston Kids Triathlon is Saturday, June 25th. Registration opens in January 44 ReFINEdKINGSTON

Sometimes though, a tooth is lost in spite of our best efforts. Nowadays, we have several great options for replacing missing teeth. Dental implants have become one of the most common and predictable ways to replace missing teeth. People who have worn dentures for many years are often able to have implants placed to stabilize their dentures, so they’re not loose anymore. More and more seniors are choosing implants over dentures or conventional bridgework. Implants are often possible even if you have one or more medical conditions and are taking multiple medications. Not everyone is a good candidate for implants, but most are, so have a frank discussion with your dentist about this type of treatment if you are missing any teeth. Many seniors worry about the cost of dentistry on a fixed or limited income. Your dentist will understand that you may not be able to invest in a really big treatment plan to replace teeth that may have been missing for many years. However, you can still benefit from regular visits to maintain the teeth you have. Seniors should be seen by a dentist at least once a year for a check-up, oral cancer screening, teeth cleaning and any necessary fillings. Some dental offices, like Cataraqui Dental Centre, have dentists who focus their practice on seniors. Dentists are all individuals, just like their patients, and some prefer working with older clients and understand their unique concerns.

New Path Spa by Magda-Sosin - Relax, Renew & Revive Photos by Steven Wild

“Women often have this misconception of treating themselves only on certain occasions. Esthetics defines relaxation, rejuvenation and reviving one’s senses”

In European history as well as modern day Europe, it is common practice for women to maintain their well-being through treatments such as manicures, facials and body treatments. While some may consider this concept of beauty as a mere luxury or a frivolous expense, Magda Sosin-Tran of New Path Spa feels differently. “I am eastern European and for us, it’s not a luxury to see an esthetician, but it is a part of grooming yourself. Women often have this misconception of treating themselves only on certain occasions. Esthetics defines relaxation, rejuvenation and reviving one’s senses,” she says.

Magda Sosin-Tran With a passion and drive to carve her own niche amongst Kingstonians, Magda was determined to bring her dedication and hard work of the past two decades to another level by opening a spa with a great vision of beauty, high quality services and a dedicated and professional staff. “I found that the love and passion grew with the graph of my career, and I believe estheticians are gifted with the art of beauty,” she says. “At New Path Spa, our approach is Ayurveda,” continues Magda. “We believe that one must feel the tranquility inside to see it reflect on the outside.” With an array of eco-friendly and organic services, New Path Spa

believes in natural treatments, and strongly believes in giving back to society by using bio-degradable and economic products. Different from its contemporaries, Magda brings Organic skincare lines, oxygenated Luzern facials, threading, and eco-fin treatments (which provide an eco-friendly paraffin alternative) to the table with a variety of personalized services. “I believe that I bring diversity at New Path spa through my multicultured staff, and this enhances and redefines your experience as a client,” says Magda. “I assure you that your experience will be world class.” Educated as an esthetician in Poland, Magda continues to advance her career with further training and courses. “My aim is to deliver the best in a service, it should be an experience for my clients,” she says. “I am certified in Ayurveda, Reflexology, Reiki, eyelash extensions, and micro-pigmentation to name a few.” In January, Magda intends to travel to Poland to train in microblading, which is the art of creating three-dimensional, semipermanent hair strokes to give the appearance of perfectly defined brows. New Path Spa uses natural and organic products for most of its services. Specializing in all waxing services, they use Rica, one of the highest regarded products in the waxing industry.

Also taking the experience to another level, Magda is supported by a team of highly qualified professionals, which includes Nida Butt, Chelsea Weatherdon and Brooke MacDonald. Each woman brings their own specialty to the table, says Magda. Nida is well-known for her art of eyebrow threading, oxygen facials and her love for makeup application. She also brings in a house specialty known as Nida’s Organic Tea, which is famous amongst clients for its calming and detoxification benefits. Brooke, a certified registered massage therapist, is amongst the best RMTs in town, and continues to advance her remarkable skills over the years with extensive training to treat acute and chronic conditions through massage therapy. For Magda Sosin-Tran, the emphasis has always been ‘clients first.’ Located at 729 Gardiners Rd., New Path Spa by MagdaSosin looks forward to welcoming each one of you with the same dedication, high-quality services, professionalism and a unique experience, “because you deserve it,” says Magda. It’s about finding joy unexpectedly, becoming a kinder person and continuing to always have an open mind.” She couldn’t have dreamed of the success the blog would experience, and so while Pip is certainly changing lives in her own special way, so is her mother. Since its inception, the blog has touched millions worldwide, and continues to draw new readers in every day with its honest and touching posts. McCallan finds her fame rather amusing. “We’re just sharing our lives,” she says with a laugh.

Despite her humble musings on notoriety, McCallan— who has a background in journalism — recognizes the impact the blog has on its readers. “Some of the most important messages I get are from families that got a pre-diagnosis of Down syndrome and it was very negative and they were on their way to terminate…and then they Google Down syndrome and find Pip and they change their mind because of her,” she says, her emotions getting the best of her. “So when I get messages like that, or messages from families that want to adopt children with Down syndrome because of Pip…that really resonates with me, and gives the whole thing purpose.” FACING PAGE and TOP RIGHT : Pip McCallan ABOVE: Tara and Pip

T

wo-year-old Reid McCallan (affectionately known as ‘Pip’) loves music. According to her adoring mom Tara, if there’s a beat happening anywhere, she’s dancing. A middle child, she also adores her two brothers, a good, old-fashioned slice of peanut butter toast and her puppy, Deacon. She’s also an avid cuddler, and has a laugh that starts in her toes and bubbles up and out of her body. What doesn’t define this wondrous little girl who rocks pink eyeglasses like no one else can? She has Down syndrome.

operations throughout her short life, including heart surgery. “When you have a baby, it’s supposed to be this joyous time when people are telling you ‘congratulations, and ‘she’s beautiful’ and all this kind of stuff. And for us, it was kind of bogged down in Pip’s diagnosis,” says her mom. People were saying, ‘I’m sorry’, or ‘You’ve been chosen,’ or all these things that have negative aspects to it, and it really shook me how some doctors and others handled it.” For this spirited mother of three, it just wasn’t the tone she wanted set for her daughter, and her blog, Happy Soul Project, was born. It was her own way of sharing Pip’s diagnosis — and her ever-present optimism, hope and happiness with others. “Pip has rocked my world, changed my perspectives and

She says she’s thankful fate decided to paint their lives a little outside the lines — and wants to encourage others to see the beauty in living a life that may not be seen as ordinary. “I live my life that way, and I lived my life that way before, but then having this kind of situation where you’re forced to see outside of expectations of what it means to have a child…I think it has changed me….it really makes me live day-by-day, and I hope to inspire others to really see their lives outside of the lines — to see the beauty in something a little out of the ordinary, and try to be grateful with all the ups and downs.” True to its word, the blog has successfully broken down stigmas, changed perspectives and celebrated differences — not only with McCallan’s beautiful musings on her family, but with various initiatives, as well. Kick-It-Capes, sewn by anyone willing to donate time and fabric to the initiative, have been sent to more than 3,000 kids around the world fighting cancer or other serious illnesses. Happy Soul Project’s #differentisbeautiful Campaign celebrates the beauty in difference by featuring children in their annual calendar. The 2016 calendar has already been launched. “This year, it features 48 children with exceptionalities, rare disorders, cancer and vast syndromes, all proud to celebrate who they are,” says McCallan. Thirdly, the Awesome Eh Act encourages readers to complete a random act of kindness once a month, leaving people with nothing left to say but “Awesome Eh?”.

am often asked, “Can I do more than yoga for fitness during pregnancy?” Yes, most definitely! However, knowing what is safe, what can be done and how it should be done matters. General cookie cutter training programs are not applicable to this special demographic and each pregnancy should be assessed individually. The optimal scenario is to work on your fitness before becoming pregnant, but you can certainly start a training program safely during pregnancy. The PARQ Med X for Pregnancy form can be found under ‘training forms’ at www.conquertraning.guru. Created by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, this physical readiness questionnaire is a great tool to use as a launching pad. This form includes prenatal exercise guidelines, signs and symptoms to watch for, risk factors, a self-assessment and an authorization form to be completed by your doctor or caregiver eight to 12 weeks into the pregnancy. The key fitness priorities for pregnancy are: • Postural strength and endurance • Core stability • Flexibility and symmetry • Main mover muscular strength • Cardiovascular stamina • Relaxation

Change...It’s all around us, it’s bound to happen & it is those in it that actually help change who we are.

As a pregnancy progresses, the increased forward load at the abdomen and chest can result in poor posture and cause a multitude of problems such as back pain, headaches, sciatica, calf cramps and knee discomfort. Training for postural strength and endurance is critical to minimizing these discomforts. Core stability and core awareness will help to maintain neutral pelvic position as the pregnancy progresses. Strong core stability can usually reduce or eliminate prenatal and postpartum back

discomfort, so it is well worth the effort. When fitness training, everyone should evaluate their body symmetry. Poor symmetry equals poor mechanics. Strength and flexibility symmetry differences are exaggerated during pregnancy, often significantly affecting moving mechanics. Functionality is important. Can daily tasks and activities be performed pain free with good technique, strength and stamina? That is the goal of functional training. Most women work during their pregnancy and if they already have a young child at home they are still working when they get home at the end of the day. Muscular and cardiovascular strength and endurance training can be a game changer in eliminating exhaustion, decreasing discomforts and preventing injuries. Sleeping can be difficult for many people and pregnancy only further complicates sleep. Practicing breathing, visualization and progressive relaxation techniques early in your first pregnancy is incredibly helpful and very useful during birthing and the postpartum period. It is also a good idea to consider sleep ergonomics as the pregnancy progresses. See a trainer, physiotherapist or occupational therapist for tips and solutions for sleep positioning. If you are pregnant, thinking about pregnancy or know someone who is pregnant, seek information and guidance to make the most of the pregnancy. It is very tricky to start fitness training after the baby arrives, so don’t delay. Pregnancy is no time for excuses. The key is to make the most of that time and be powerful! What will your conquer today? Make a plan and be unstoppable!

ventilators to help them breathe. They are particularly noisy pieces of equipment but provide the specialized breathing assistance that these babies need while their lungs develop. “One parent told me how soothing they felt the sound of the ventilator was,” said Dr. Robert Connelly, medical director of Pediatrics at KGH. “When they walked into the nursery and heard the ventilator, they knew their baby was always better.” “After you’ve been there for so long you hear things like ‘Callie is intubated again’ and you realize it’s probably for the best so she can be more relaxed,” explained Stephanie, “but at first, I was in tears thinking about how she was struggling.” Stephanie and Joe grew accustomed to life in the NICU. After a few weeks, their daughters had stabilized to a point where the new parents could participate in their care. Kingston is home to one of only eight NICU departments in the province of Ontario that is outfitted with the equipment that Cayden and Callie needed to survive. Stephanie and Joe, who live in Napanee, were able to visit their children at the hospital every day for four months— something that might not have been possible had they needed to travel far from home.

U

nder normal circumstances, giving birth to twin girls on Dec. 24 would be the perfect early Christmas gift for first-time parents. But Callie and Cayden Reid were born prematurely at 27 weeks. They spent their first four months fighting for their precious little lives in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Kingston General Hospital (KGH).

On Dec. 24, 2014, Stephanie Montroy was preparing for the holidays and shopping for some last-minute Christmas baking supplies. She was 27 weeks pregnant, and had seen her doctor the day before. “I was experiencing a lot of cramping,” she said, but her doctor reassured her it was “just pregnancy.” But Stephanie knew that something wasn’t right. She followed her intuition and some advice from her mother and called KGH, and was advised to make her way to the hospital for an exam.

“They checked me out, and then I felt this huge burst,” explained Stephanie. “The doctor just said, ‘You better get your family in here. Something’s happened.’” That burst was Stephanie’s water breaking, 17 weeks ahead of schedule. “I don’t even think it dawned on me that I was going to be in NICU,” said Stephanie, “I was just thinking about being a mom.” Stephanie was immediately given medication to try to postpone the delivery as long as possible, but her baby girls, Cayden and Callie, were born on Christmas Eve, Cayden weighing 1lb. 8oz. and Callie at 2lb. 1oz.

“Their hands looked just like adult hands, scaled down,” said Stephanie’s partner, Joe Reid. “They had wrinkles on their knuckles and everything, but the whole thing was the size of a thumbnail.” After a few precious moments with their mother in the delivery room, Cayden and Callie were whisked to the NICU where they were hooked up to special life-giving technology to help them breathe and to measure their vital signs. For new parents, the sights and sounds of the NICU were stressful. “When you’ve got a pound and a half baby that looks like it’s living off a computer, and then that computer starts to siren, you immediately think your baby is dying,” explained Joe. “It’s scary at first, but what we learned after a week or two is that it’s normal.” Lungs are the last organ to develop in newborns, which means that Callie and Cayden needed the assistance of

“Imagine the trauma of having not only an unanticipated unwell infant but then to be told that they are going to Ottawa or Toronto to be cared for,” said Dr. Connelly. “Because we have this ability with some very important pieces of equipment, we can keep those families in our community.” Government funding alone cannot supply all the equipment needed, so the NICU also depends on the generosity of community donors to fund lifesaving equipment. “[Donations] buy lifesaving equipment that keeps up with growing technology improvements,” said Stephanie. “And without that equipment, our babies may not have survived.” For more information on how you can help babies like Callie and Cayden, visit uhkf.ca/miracles. Five Ways To Make Sure Your Pet Has A Safe Holiday The holidays are an exciting time for families everywhere and with just a little extra planning on your part, you can make this season enjoyable for all the people and pets in your family.

W

hether you’re traveling across the country to visit inlaws or staying close to home, it’s important not to forget about your pets. To ensure a safe, enjoyable season for your four-legged friends, keep these five pet safety tips in mind from the experts at DogVacay. 1. Be smart about stocking stuffers. Filling up your pet’s stocking can be fun, but it’s important not to get carried away. When buying special treats for the occasion, remember to check for any recalls. When shopping for toys, avoid items that have stuffing or fuzz that pups can get into and eat. If you live in a city or have neighbors, you should also be careful when buying anything that makes a lot of noise in case your pet gets carried away with the holiday spirit. Finally, remember your pet can overeat, too - keep treats in moderation to avoid an upset tummy. 2. Don’t celebrate with a bang. New Year’s Eve is a popular time for fireworks, and as pretty as they are, many animals are frightened by the loud noises. Shield your pet from these outside distractions by closing the curtains and playing some familiar background noises - like the stereo or television - to dampen the fireworks outside and soothe your pet’s anxiety.

54

3. Research your boarding options. When it comes time to travel, many pet owners have no choice but to leave their pets at home. Kennels can be expensive and a poor fit for your pet, while family and friends may not be dogand-cat people. DogVacay is a convenient and inexpensive alternative that helps pet owners find local, qualified and insured caretakers near them so their pet can get the love and attention it deserves. No matter what option you choose, be sure to read online reviews and talk to other pet owners that have used the service. 4. Decorate without the dangerous decor. Decorations in homes with pets must be planned with care. Poinsettias, for example, are a holiday staple, but unfortunately they are highly toxic for cats and dogs alike. Tinsel can also be harmful if swallowed, and causes digestion problems in both dogs and cats. Before hanging any decoration, make sure other pet owners haven’t experienced complications. If you do find poinsettias and other holiday ephemera irresistable, make sure it’s placed high and out-of-reach. Same goes for holiday sweets and things like chocolate. No one wants to spend Christmas dinner at the vet. 5. Keep an eye on doggie-doors. When guests arrive at your home, doors will be opening and closing constantly. If you’re worried about a potential jail break, it may be helpful to download a pet tracking app like Tagg, which attaches to your pet’s collar and lets you track them. That way you can find your pet at any point in the festivities, even if they do manage to get loose outdoors.

omplete with bubbly champagne, delicious hors-d’oeuvres and a DJ to keep the party going all evening, A Night in New York — inspired by glamorous Hollywood icons like Elizabeth Taylor — promises to be unforgettable, says Amanda M.D., CEO of Gold Club Events. “We are excited because it’s big, bold and over the top and a different type of event Kingston has probably never had before,” she says. “[Attendees] will enjoy the atmosphere, as it will be different and fun, feature great music, great food, and fantastic flow of energy throughout the venue. Who doesn’t want to dress up and have fun, especially at this type of event?” Hosted at BLU Martini Bar & Grill, A Night in New York is being hosted by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs. It’s a fantastic opportunity for businesspeople in the Limestone City to connect with one another in a fashionable and eloquent social setting, says M.D. “With a New York-inspired setting, we really wanted to hone in on the style and impeccable [way that] New York presents its events, showcases fashion trends and its love for music — ultimately creating a zenith in adult entertainment. We wanted to bring a touch of class, liveliness and sophistication [to an event] for people in Kingston to enjoy around the Christmas Holidays.”

A Night In New York — which organizers hope will become an annual affair — will raise funds for the Partners In Mission Food Bank, which nourishes local families by providing groceries through their food hamper program, and by donating surplus provisions to more than 20 local hot meal and shelter programs in the Kingston area. The event promises to be unlike any other the city has seen, says M.D. “It’s big, bold and over the top. We strongly encourage Kingstonians to attend this event, because they will meet lots of new and different people.” It’s no accident the event was planned so close to the holidays. “This is the perfect time for this event,” says M.D. “There’s staff Christmas parties, groups of friends and family usually love to get out and let loose before the holiday starts. Everyone is coming home to spend time with family and there’s no real good place or event of this calibre in Kingston, it just makes sense.” Tickets for A Night in New York, which are available online, are $100. Beginning Dec. 3, Domino Theatre presents a Christmas classic to audiences when Miracle on 34th Street takes the stage. This comedy-drama has been a favourite since the film’s release in 1947. Dec. 5, the Rogers K-Rock Centre will play host to an impressive cast of Olympic champions and world competitors — including Olympic gold medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, four-time world champion Kurt Browning, as well as Olympic medalists Joannie Rochette and Jeffrey Buttle — for the Holiday Festival On Ice.

The following evening, Canada’s multi-platinum, JUNO Awardwinning vocal group The Tenors will return to the Limestone City as part of their Under One Sky North American Tour. “It was an awesome experience,” says Port McNeill’s Clifton Murray of the group’s last performance in Kingston two years ago. “We are looking forward to coming back. We already have the fans in Kingston sending us notes about how they are looking forward to the show.”

Candlelight Christmas takes place Dec. 15 and 16 at St. George’s Cathedral. A yuletide tradition for many families, this holiday performance — presented by the Kingston Symphony and Kingston Choral Society — never fails to disappoint with its rousing renditions of Christmas classics. If you’re in need of some holiday cheer, St. George’s Cathedral is the place to be for this pleasing performance. Designed by Kingston’s first practicing architect Thomas Rogers and built in 1825, the venue lends itself beautifully to this musical Kingston tradition. Whether you’re a fan of Christmas classics or enjoy a rousing

rendition of something a little bit different, this performance delivers on all fronts. From Dec. 17-19, Bottle Tree Productions presents Charles Dickens’ Christmas cult classic, A Christmas Carol. Featuring the ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come, this tale never fails to warm the heart. If seeing a fantastically fun performance is on your list of must-dos this Christmas, consider taking a drive to the village of Stirling for The Stirling Festival Theatre’s annual naughty Christmas pantomime. (There’s also a family version for wee ones.) This year’s production, Treasure Island, promises to be an “uncomplicated comedy with lots of local and relatable jokes,” says David Vanderlip, managing director of the Stirling Festival Theatre. The small but mighty theatre, which has 419 seats, is often filled, speaking to the immense popularity of the shows. RK

The Tenors: Soulful Voices Join Together Under One Sky

O

n Dec. 6, the multi-platinum, Juno Award-winning group, which includes Clifton Murray, Victor Micallef, Remigio Pereira and Fraser Walters, will once again grace the stage at the Rogers K-Rock Centre with their jawdropping, soulful voices and amiable onstage presence. “We are looking forward to coming back to Kingston,” said Port McNeill’s Clifton Murray during his interview with ReFINEd Kingston Magazine. “We already have the fans in Kingston sending us notes about how they are looking forward to the show.” The Tenors’ Under One Sky Tour – which kicked off in September to a sold-out crowd – is proving to be a hit with audiences so far. It’s no surprise the affable Canadian group loves every minute of it. “For me, I love being onstage and seeing the response from the audience,” said Murray, on his way with the group to wow fans in Austin, Texas. “You never know what the response is going to be like until you get on stage and put all the money into the big production… but at the end of the day, it’s about the songs and the music and the response so far has been great.”

Equal parts talented and charming, The Tenors — Canada’s very own sweet-singing quartet — are making waves once again with their new album, Under One Sky. Rich and poignant, the new album is every bit as powerful as previous albums released by this dapper-looking foursome. Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

Under One Sky – which includes covers of beloved songs like “Lean On Me,” “Who Wants to Live Forever” and “You Are So Beautiful” is decidedly bolder than previous albums. And yet, by combining classical music with pop, each and every song on the album leaves listeners in awe of the group’s remarkable voices.

Some of the music is not what one would expect from a tenor group – which is precisely why The Tenors have seen the success they have with this album. “It’s just more of us trying

62 ReFINEdKINGSTON

to reinvent what a tenor group is and can be,” says Murray. “We see ourselves more of a band and allowing the music to come from us individually and as a group to make sure it stands on its own. These decisions on these songs really come from the four of us. We really listen to our audience and follow our hearts and it seems to be working for us so far.” Doing covers of some of the world’s most beloved songs was at times intimidating, says Murray, but the group did it with passion, and they did it well. “These are songs that stand the test of time and are loved the world over,” says Murray. “When you take a song on like that, you make sure that you do the song justice but also make it different on your own. We’re trying to make it significant for this day and age that we’re in now.” Having such a magical combination of voices doesn’t hurt, either. “All four boys are committed to their craft and devoted to their fans, and desperately wanting to create something that will last, that will leave a legacy,” says Murray. “We’re all very different singers all coming together to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. We are pop, we are classical, we are rock, we are folk, we are old world and new world. We are all different stylistically, but we come together to create something unique. And I think that really is the crux of what has kept us going is being able to make something so different work so well and be unique at the same time.” RK

FOOD & DRINK

For Grape’s Sake Overheard in conversation at a winery Article courtesy of Huff Esates, Prince Edward County

How do you grow great grapes? Well, to begin with, you choose a favourable site; ideally with warm, dry summers and poor, stony, well-drained soils. If you have to irrigate, do so cautiously. Ration the water source. If you give a vine rich soil and plenty of moisture, it will put all of its efforts into giving you bountiful layers of leaves. Pruning is essential to shaping and disciplining the vine and to keep it from producing too much fruit. Then what? At harvest time, the onus is on the vineyard manager and his crew to pick gently, by hand, into small baskets or trays and deliver the grapes — immaculately, lying whole and attached to their bunches — to the winery promptly. You’ve got my attention. What happens next? Before I go on, let me stress the importance of promptness. However brilliant the technical skills the winemaker possesses, barely adequate wines will result from bashed-about, hot, throbbing grape bunches sitting in an open-trailer in the midday sun for four hours. How do you know when the grapes have reached ripeness? Well, with wine grapes, winemakers know that ‘sugar’ ripeness is different from what is called ‘phenolic’ ripeness, which means the ripeness of the skins and the other components in the grape. For example, in hot wine-growing regions, if you’re vinifying a grape varietal whose habitual home is a cooler location, sugar ripeness reaches quickly but the phenolic ripeness lags behind. What happens when the grapes have made it to the winery? Let’s talk about red and white wine production. What colour do you think the juice of a Pinot Noir grape is?

grapes; colourless. All of the colour in red grapes lie in their skins. White wines need to have the skins removed as soon as possible. Red wines, by contrast, will spend the next two to three weeks fully dressed, soaked in the colourless juice with the grapes. Red wine is made from fermented grapes while whites are made from fermented grape juice. The trick with white wine production is pressing the grapes gently, keeping the juice cool and protected from oxygen. Where does the alcohol come from? In a sense, it’s excrement. The yeasts gobble up the sugar from the grapes and excrete alcohol from one sluice, figuratively speaking, and carbon dioxide from the back side. When there’s no more sugar, or when the alcohol level reaches above 16-17 per cent, the yeasts give up and fall to the bottom of the vat. No more excrement. So that’s it. Do dead yeasts mean the end of the trail? In the case of fresh, lively and austere whites, yes. All red wines, however, and the fuller-bodied whites will pass through a final stage, known as malolactic fermentation or MLF. MLF is a bacteriological transformation, whereas bacteria takes over where yeast left off; the difference being instead of converting sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide, they convert malic acid into lactic acid. And why does this matter? The result is to soften and round out the wine. Lactic acid tastes ‘milkier’ than malic acid, which is what you get in apples. For crisp, tangy whites with a gush of acidity, the MLF gets blocked. You might even, for instance, choose to blend barrels that have gone through MLF with those that haven’t to craft a particular style. After that, it’s on to cool cellars and restful dark places.

Red, of course. No, it isn’t. It’s more or less the same colour as the juice in Sauvignon Blanc

d e l i c i o u s assortment of cheeses, paired with the right foods, is a feast for the eyes and the palate. You don’t have to be a professional chef to create a cheese board that looks and tastes like a culinary masterpiece.

Purchase multiple cheese styles For visual appeal, select an odd number of cheeses, such as three or five, depending on the number of people. Try a variety of cheeses in flavors that complement one another, such as: Aged Havarti: Mild and buttery, this specialty

of the cheeses. The best boards have four pairings: A bread item, charcuterie, something sweet and something savory or salty. Breads to consider are flatbread, grilled crostini or baguettes, while great charcuterie options include prosciutto or a pork pâté.

Say Cheese! Create the Perfect Cheese Board

“For entertaining or just a quiet night at home, you can’t go wrong with a gourmet cheese board,” says Chef Michael Symon, co-host of ABC’s “The Chew,” author of three bestselling cookbooks and owner of several restaurants. “It’s a fast-and-easy appetizer that can make even a novice cook look like a culinary mastermind.”

cheese from Castello has a delicate, crystalline structure that forms during its long maturation period, creating a flavorful, crunchy surprise.

For sweets, figs, honey or berry preserves are delicious additions. And for savory and salty pairings, include Marcona almonds, cornichon pickles or Kalamata olives.

Brie: Extremely spreadable and creamy, Brie is easy on the palate and pairs with a wide variety of foods.

Consider the following as you prepare your next cheese board:

Blue: A full-flavor variety, such as Castello Traditional Danish Blue, has a wonderful “bite,” with characteristically tangy notes of blue balanced by sweet and salty undertones.

Keep your presentation simple Arrange your cheeses from mildest to strongest, in a clockwise pattern on the board. Be sure to leave space for pairings. Precut half of each cheese on the board, to make it easy for guests to dive in. Set out the cheeses 30 minutes before serving so the flavors fully come to life.

Determine the right quantity of cheese If you’re serving it as an hors d’oeuvre, plan for 1 to 1.5 ounces of each cheese type per person. If it’s for a light meal, plan for 2 to 3 ounces per person.

Select gourmet pairings The perfect cheese board includes foods that complement and enhance the taste

Before serving, place pairings on the board in small groups. Lastly, set out one knife per cheese to keep the flavors from mixing together. (BPT)

Fortunately over the past 15 years, clients of Cumberland have benefited from both our skill and our experience. And that’s one reason why their portfolios have seen an average annual return of 4% more than the market since 1999, with significantly less volatility.*

“It’s exciting to have the opportunity to pick out anything you like, unlike in a corporate office,” says Peggy Reid of Reid & Siemenson Design Group. “While it’s fun to pour through magazines and websites for ideas, you also need to think carefully about how you will be using the space. For example, an upholstered dining room chair in a fabulous print may look great but may not support your back properly for 40 hours a week. The same is true for desks; while a clean modern glass and lacquered finish may look amazing, it may not be the most practical when you have to lay out all your project files.” Reid says that too much visual stimulation in an office can actually create distraction, and suggests a colour consultation by an interior designer to find something that will work well in the space. “The most important thing when choosing a colour is to find something that inspires and energizes you,” explains Reid. “To determine the best colour it is important to find which colour works best in your situation. Blue tends to influence the most productivity, while yellows

promote creativity.” Using more vibrant colours in artwork, rugs and accessories can be a great way to bring more colours into the room that isn’t distracting while you are working. Your home office will reflect the work that you do; for example, it may be different for someone who sees clients in their office compared to someone who works alone. Reid points out that a psychologist may want subdued colours, a more formal desk and comfortable seating, while a graphic artist may showcase an edgier style to demonstrate their creative side to potential clients. “In both cases, it is important to evoke a professional setting,” says Reid. “If you are sharing the space with family members, everything needs to be properly put away.” When sharing an office with family, it’s important to set up a separate space for your work and another area for homework and crafts. At the end of the day, it makes all the difference to spend 15-20 minutes cleaning up your workstation, putting away loose papers and closing the

computer, just like you would if you weren’t at home. Having proper storage is vital for productivity. If you have a bookcase, don’t overstuff it with messy binders and papers. Reid suggests mixing in books and great accessories, so when you are holding a Skype meeting you have a nice backdrop. If you’re lucky enough to have an extra bedroom for your office, utilize the closet to maximize shelving and ensure everything has a home. “It’s important to have everything you need in your office, so you aren’t running out every time you need a stapler or an envelope,” Reid points out. “You may consider putting in a mini fridge to keep cold water and snacks on hand.” Practical concerns, such as lighting, should be foremost in your mind. There should be sufficient task lighting over your desk, and placing your desk next to a window will provide natural light. “A good quality blind such as a roller shade with at least three per cent opacity is important so that you can

view your screen during the sun’s peak times,” Reid says. “To soften the look, consider adding soft drapery panels in a fun colour or print.” Working from home provides more flexible hours, but that often translates into longer workdays. Health and wellness can be designed into your space, and a treadmill desk or standing desk is worth considering. Using an exercise ball to sit on is also a great idea to help with core strength and posture, and can be put away when you need to buckle down on a deadline. Having a yoga mat on hand is also a great idea, so you can stretch out and relax while taking a break to breathe. “With today’s technology and work share programs, more and more people are working from home and creating an optimal work/life balance,” Reid concludes. “If you are one of the lucky ones to do this, it’s worth it to spend the time to create the best environment for your office space.” RK

Discover the Confidence of Putting Your Best Face Forward

Opprox:

Connecting and Rewarding Local Businesses and Consumers by Tori Stafford

C

reating a connection between local businesses and the consumers that love them should be two things: Simple and rewarding.

This is the concept behind Opprox – ‘Opportunities in Proximity.’ This new social marketing platform allows customers to collect points for frequenting their favourite businesses, as well as allowing merchants the opportunity to reward loyal clientele while attracting new business. Born and developed here in Kingston, the concept arose from a gripe founder Ahsen Basit had with customer rewards programs – a pet peeve for many consumers in today’s world. “It all started with a problem that I would face myself, as a student,” says Basit, who is currently in his final year of commerce at Queen’s University. “I would go to a lot of restaurants and stores in Kingston, but I hated carrying around all of these one-off coupons and points cards from businesses. My wallet already has a lot of cards in it, and I wouldn’t have space for them.” Additionally, Basit identified a number of problems with other social advertising platforms. Social media advertising is increasingly difficult, he says, noting that the organic reach of Facebook posts has dropped significantly. “Say, for example, you have 1,000 likes on your business Facebook page,” he explains. “If you do an organic post, it will only reach 10 per cent or less of those followers. That’s why businesses have to buy posts or continually boost their posts.” As well, many online email-based deals and coupons are valid only for first-time customers. While this may increase traffic through business doors initially, the concept doesn’t help businesses to

74

Opprox solves all of these problems in one simple program. For consumers, it is as simple as downloading the app and signing up – no cards to carry or constant email updates. From there, the app offers a variety of discounts, sales and rewards programs. At the same time, Opprox users earn points for spending money in a business that’s partnered with Opprox, and the points can be exchanged for goods and services. There are an array of businesses partnered with Opprox, including restaurants, clothing stores, spas, and health and well-being services, all offering special discounts and sales, and each with their own unique rewards programs. A number of iconic Kingston businesses have already joined Opprox, including Pan Chanco and Chez Piggy, K-Town Kups, Ali Baba Kabab, House of Angelis, and The Toucan Pub. The best thing about Opprox is how the program benefits everyone, Basit explains. “It’s easy to use for businesses and for consumers,” he says, noting that feedback since Opprox launched in September has been incredibly positive. “The businesses tell me that their customers love the rewards and are coming in more often, so it’s win-win for everybody.” An app and a network that connects consumers and local businesses, allowing them to both benefit mutually: Simple and rewarding.

Why You Want A Financial Plan – And How To Get One

Discovering the TFSA Advantage and Their Potential

anadians agree that financial planning pays off by delivering real value. In two recent studies – The Value of Financial Planning1 and The Value of Advice: Report2 - a majority of Canadians agreed that by choosing financial advice, they accumulated more assets and were better prepared, financially, for retirement. Over 50 per cent reported they were on track to reach their desired lifestyle in retirement, compared to just 18 per cent of those who don’t receive any financial advice. Most also felt integrated financial planning improved their ability to save, made them less concerned about their financial situation and feel better about having the discretionary income to lead the life they want – and very importantly, it gave them greater peace of mind. Do you need a financial plan? Yes – if you have an income, a family or hopes of one in the future, retirement lifestyle dreams, and for many other financially-rooted reasons that are unique to you. In general, your financial plan should include investment planning, cash flow planning, education planning, estate planning, insurance planning, retirement planning and income tax planning. But the key to a successful financial plan is tailoring each of those elements to you and your needs. To achieve that, a competent professional advisor will take you through this six-step planning process:

1. Goal setting – to define and prioritize your goals and concerns.

2. Data gathering – bringing together pertinent financial

to cover your retirement expenses and ways to ensure you will; what you can do to better meet your income needs; and strategies for protecting your family and income should you become disabled or die unexpectedly.

4. Plan formulation and recommendations – reviewing and agreeing on solutions for achieving your financial goals and improving your overall financial life. 5. Plan implementation – a written report that summarizes the steps you need to take to make your plan work. 6. Monitoring and plan review – staying on track by reviewing your plan at least annually and when major life events occur. Comprehensive financial planning is necessary. It’s also complex. It should be precisely tailored to your life as it is today and easily adaptable to the constant changes life brings your way. When you add a professional advisor to your financial team with the qualifications, tools and track record you can count on, you can rest assured your personalized plan will do the job for your life. 1 Study conducted by The Strategic Council for the Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC), August 2009 to January 2010, 7,300 Canadians surveyed. 2 2010 Value of Advice: Report, Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC), July 2010 including third party data from Statistics Canada, Ipso Reid and others.

arlier this year the Conservative government increased the Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) annual contribution limit to $10,000 from $5,500, and therefore made the cumulative limit for TFSAs now $41,000. This now means that an individual could open a TFSA and as long as they have not contributed before could deposit up to $41,000 into the plan and enjoy tax free income from the plan. Money that is made inside a TFSA, or that is withdrawn from a TFSA is not taxable, and mainly because of higher contribution limits and cumulative amounts, TFSAs are now competing with other savings plan like Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), and non-registered plans as the savings plan of choice for individuals. TFSAs can hold nearly all the same investments as RRSPs which include stocks, bonds, mutual funds, preferred shares, exchange traded funds, guaranteed investment certificates, and cash. When faced with these possibilities, the individual is offered more variety, and therefore more investment choices and along with proper prudence and due diligence, better planning strategies could be created. So for example, an individual with high interest income, or an individual that has high growth assets could shelter the income tax from these assets by simply placing these assets into a TFSA. (High growth assets could still be transferred to a TFSA provided the capital gain is low when transferring). When withdrawing from a TFSA, the income is not taxed as opposed to an RRSP where the full amount of the withdrawal is taxable and claimed on the individual’s tax return. This would prove to be advantageous for high income retirees who are facing the Old Age Security (OAS) clawback if the individual’s

net income is over $72,809 for 2015. The government imposes a clawback on OAS payments if the individual’s net income is over the above amount, and the amount of the clawback is equal to the individual’s OAS payments or 15% of the amount by which the net income exceeds the threshold whichever is less. For 2015, the full amount of the OAS benefit will be eliminated when net income (including OAS benefit) is over $117,000. (May be wise to split income with spouse if not already doing so). When withdrawing from an RRSP or RRIF it may be advantageous to withdraw more and then deposit excess funds into an TFSA providing the individual is using proper tax planning, and the individual is within his/her limits for the TFSA. If the individual is in the lowest tax bracket and lowest marginal tax rate this procedure would result in paying the lowest amount of tax on the RRSP withdrawal, and gives the individual the opportunity to deposit the maximum amount to their TFSA. Future withdrawals would eventually be withdrawn from the TFSA which would result in no tax being paid. Withdrawing more from the RRSP would result in drawing down the balance faster which may result in less of a future tax burden for the individual’s estate. Individuals should also take advantage of the TFSA’s current rules before the new Liberal government takes place and perhaps makes changes to the TFSA rules. As always when individual’s make decisions that involve tax planning, estate planning, and retirement planning they should seek out the proper planning professional to help them with proper guidance and advice.

estled along the serene banks of the Cataraqui River, The Woolen Mill is an integral feature of Kingston’s historical identity.

The Woolen Mill :

Maintaining History While Pursuing the Future

A 19th-century building, the four-storey, red brick structure was constructed in 1882, once serving as a cotton mill for the Kingston Cotton Manufacturing Company. The City of Kingston purchased the property 50 years later, intending for it to run as a woolen mill instead, under lease of the Hield Bros. of England. The mill thrived during and beyond the Great Depression and the war. It wasn’t until 1966, when synthetic fabrics gained momentum, that the mill closed. Three years later, St. Francis Developments took over and the building began undergoing renovations to section the open-concept building into office space for multiple businesses. During its first century, the building was maintained through a continual refurbishing program, allowing the ancient structure to survive and become the historic building it is today. The major additions and renovations began in 1993, all the while keeping the building’s natural character in mind. The wooden floors have been well-preserved with many coats of oil. etting on ‘The Google’ is something of a mystery for many, but the reason to be on the first page of Google typically isn’t. As most of us know, when someone is looking for a product or service, whether from their phone, or their home or office computer, they are using the Google Search Engine. Google currently holds 67% of the market share on PC searches, and a whopping 83% on Mobile. Most of the time searchers never navigate away from the 1st results page so it is ultimately important that we show up somewhere on the 1st page for the keywords of our businesses. How to get “Ranked” Breaking it down to the essentials getting on the first page takes good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and that is the process of setting up your website and offsite marketing to accurately show search engines what you are all about. It all starts with Keywords Google is essentially looking at the content of your page from the top down for who you are and what you do. They look in the Title, the Headings, the ALT descriptions of images, URLS and so much more. The content is the most important aspect of your website and by using your keywords everywhere you can

tell search engines what they need to know. Utilize headings, titles, bolds, and emphases to support your keywords in your content. Use the FREE Tools Google Provides I always say SUBMIT to Google and I don’t mean in a 50 Shades of Grey kind of way, I mean use the Google Webmaster Tools to submit your sitemap and tell them who you are, where they can find you and what you have to offer. Using the Webmaster Tools they provide go a long way to getting you indexed and showing Google that you are working to get noticed. Put Yourself on ‘The Google’ The last point I’ll stress is taking control of your Google for Business and Google+ pages. These pages are directly linked to Google and the information is top notch when it comes to getting noticed and placed on maps, Google business listings and more. Be as descriptive and explanatory as you can as it’s ALL in the details. Following these steps will help get you noticed; tweaking them will take you to the top.

Business Owner Life Insurance After Age 55

Top Five Tips to Maintain Your Car This Winter

Ice, rain, snow and freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on your car. To keep your family safe on the slippery roads this winter, it’s important to take a few simple winterization steps.

elcome to your mid-50s, a time when you notice your world has begun to shift. Children are often grown and your mortgage and other debts have shrunk or are all together gone. By age 55, many business owners have a strong, successful business that affords them a lifestyle they worked hard to achieve. With few of the traditional needs for life insurance, why do so many people in this situation continue their coverage? The answer is simple. They own life insurance because it helps them protect against the concerns that exist at this stage of life including tax, estate and succession planning. Let’s look at an example of how life insurance can play an important role in achieving succession and estate planning objectives. Stella is a healthy and vibrant 65-year-old widow. Since her husband died, she has owned 100 per cent of the shares of her family’s successful small business corporation. Her other assets include her home, the family cottage and a significant sum of registered and non-registered investments. Stella is now retired and her son Jack works in the business. Since his father’s passing, Jack is leading the business. He is talented and hard-working and Stella wants to ensure he assumes full ownership of the business upon her death. Stella’s daughter Jillian has moved to Toronto to pursue a different path. Stella plans to leave Jillian the remaining value of her investments, her primary residence and the family cottage Jillian loves dearly. Stella has recently begun estate planning with a goal of reducing taxes due at death, helping ensure her estate is distributed fairly between her two adult children, and safeguarding cash to cover her final tax bill. Stella has worked with her trusted accountant and lawyers to achieve these goals. She also wants to work with a financial security advisor

to investigate what role life insurance can play in her planning. As part of her tax-reduction planning, Stella will complete an estate freeze and move forward with strategies to purify her corporation. Let’s assume that after implementing these measures Stella’s final tax bill (at death) on the deemed disposition of her shares, her cottage and her remaining registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) is approximately $570,000 today and $500,000 at age 89. Stella considers the options her children will have to pay her final tax bill. The options include: • Setting aside some of her investments today to provide funds to cover her final tax bill • Hope her house sells quickly after her death (although the investments and the proceeds of the sale of the house are intended for Jillian not Canada Revenue Agency) • Take the required funds out of the company (although this is not a tax-friendly option and this option could negatively impact business operations) • Borrow the money (but her children will need to pay it back plus interest) • Purchase a level cost permanent life insurance policy that pays out a tax free death benefit After considering these options Stella decides to purchase a permanent life insurance policy. Ultimately, Stella moved ahead with the life insurance option because it made sense for her situation and her budget. She also appreciates knowing that upon her passing, the final pieces of her estate plan will move into action — including her children receiving a tax-free life insurance death benefit to pay her final tax bill. The information provided is based on current laws, regulations and other rules applicable to Canadian residents. It is accurate to the best of the writer’s knowledge as of the date submitted for publication.

P

roper maintenance can go a long way in helping preserve the investment in your vehicle. Follow these five tips to keep your vehicle in top shape throughout the winter weather: 1. Switch engine oil: Oil lubricates the engine so it can function properly, but not all automobile oil is the same. We live in a cold climate, consider switching to a thinner, less viscous oil. For example, a 10W-30 might be ideal for hot summer weather, but a thicker 5W-30 is better for when temperatures dip below freezing. Ask your auto mechanic what is recommended and refer to the manufacturer’s manual for more insight. 2. Maintain a car wash routine: Due to the presence of ice, salt and sand on the roads, washing your vehicle in the winter is even more important than the summer. Getting a car wash and a fresh coat of wax before the temperature begins to drop can be your first line of defense against winter elements. Vehicular corrosion occurs most quickly when the temperature rises and falls below freezing. The International Carwash Association recommends finding a car wash that is part of the WaterSavers program. There are more than 1,500 environmentally friendly car washes worldwide enrolled in the program that meet water quality and usage standards. These car washes use 151.5 litres (40 gallons) or less of fresh water per car. Find a participating car wash near you by visiting www.washwithwatersavers.com. 3. Check the battery: Cold weather can take a toll on your car’s battery. Before you get stranded, give your battery a once-over to make sure it’s in tip-top shape. Check the cables, terminals and fluid and look

for anything abnormal. Some battery retailers will conduct a complementary car battery assessment if you’d prefer an expert analysis. 4. Update engine coolant: Just because it’s chilly doesn’t mean your engine can’t overheat. To protect your engine against corrosion and to help ensure it doesn’t overheat, ask your car technician to change to a coolant with ethylene glycol, which has antifreeze properties. While replacing coolants, ask the technician to make sure all fluids are topped off, including window washer solution. 5. Get a grip on tire safety: It’s critical to check your tires to keep you and your passengers safe. Each tire should have an adequate amount of tread to properly grip the road, aso be sure to your tires are properly inflated to ensure optimum handling, safety, and fuel efficiency. (BPT)

Taking the time to properly winterize your car not only ensures the comfort and safety of you and your family but also helps you maintain the value of your car for many winters to come.

Take Your STairS to the Next Level Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

G

one are the days when staircases served only a utilitarian function in the home — functional, yes, but certainly not pretty. Today, that’s all changed; stairs have become freestanding sculptural structures that no longer blend into the background of today’s open-concept homes. An industrial-style combination of metal, glass and wood is immensely popular these days, with many homeowners opting for staircases that seem to float within a space. Steel, which is the most durable of all materials, provides non-imposing strength and can handle plenty of wear and tear. Because it’s so malleable, this material also allows designers and homeowners to achieve a look that is unique to their own home. Meanwhile, glass allows the home’s design to remain open and airy. For a more organic appearance, some homeowners opt to add some wood to the design of their stairs. Cherry, mahogany, maple and oak are homeowners’ top picks for stair treads. Bearing safety in mind, many homeowners feel more comfortable with carpeted stairs — especially if they have young children. Start with a high-quality under-pad, says Mark Rodrigues, sales manager at Kingston Carpetworld.

“This is what gives the carpet the resiliency to stand up to the type of wear the carpet goes through on stairs.” When it comes to the type of carpet, a low-loop construction is best in a multi-tone cut pile, assures Rodrigues. “This multicolour style is great for hiding stains and simply not showing wear as quickly as a solid colour.” While stairs serve an obviously primary function, there’s no reason they can’t be multipurpose. If the design you’ve chosen allows it, consider installing a custom-built storage unit beneath the stairs. The often-neglected space provides the perfect opportunity for built-in drawers and cabinets that make for some stealthy storage solutions. If you want to really maximize the space, consider the installation of a half-bath. The perfectly-proportioned space provides just enough room for the basics. Just make sure there’s enough headroom; check local building codes. If you’re more of a wine connoisseur, the space under your stairs can double its ‘wow factor’ when it also serves as a wine cellar. With the ability to fit hundreds of bottles in this tiny space, there’s no need to go thirsty again. An added bonus? It’ll look like a work of art when it’s complete, and serve as a great conversation starter, too. RK

Kingston’s Best Source for Luxury Homes

www.KingstonLuxuryHomes.ca Choosing the Perfect Area Rug By Mark Rodgriues, Kingston Carpet World

W

ith the popularity of hard surface flooring in modern décor area rugs have also become a decorating must. Choosing the right area rug can be intimidating; too small and the room will look unfinished, the wrong colour, style or pattern can make your décor seem awkward. So what should you consider when shopping for the perfect area rug? Colour is usually the first thing we think about when choosing a rug. If you already have a lot of colour and pattern in your room you may want to choose a rug in a single colour that compliments your existing décor or a neutral shade. If your décor is predominantly neutral this is an opportunity to add some ‘flair’ - choose a bold rug or one with pattern.

Live Life In

Texture is often overlooked when making a decision; love your neutral décor? It can be enhanced with an area rug that has lots of texture, the options are endless, and area rugs are available in everything from rough sisal to something with a fluffy, soft pile. When choosing texture consider how

much wear and tear the rug will need to endure, or the level of comfort you are looking to achieve. A hard sisal rug may not be comfortable on bare feet in a family room yet a fluffypile or shag rug might be more difficult to keep clean. Size is often the most difficult choice. For seating areas the rug should be large enough to define the space with the front feet of your furniture on the rug. In a bedroom the rug can be positioned either at the end of the bed with the foot of the bed on the rug or place two smaller area rugs on each side to warm your toes in the morning. If you are placing a rug in your dining room be sure the table and all the chairs are on the surface. Cost is a factor as well; a hand-knotted silk rug may be as beautiful as it is expensive but is it suitable for a high traffic room? Area rugs are available in every price range – for every style and every need; the options are as endless as your imagination. Area rugs are the perfect finishing touch or the first inspiration for any room in your home. Kingston Carpet World 2452 Princess Street, Kingston, 613-549.7847 • kingstoncarpetworld.ca

If so, knowing what’s what with mortgages can save you money now and in the future. To get you going, here are some of the mortgage basics you should know.

Collateral vs. Conventional Mortgages:

• Collateral mortgages usually have the ability to diversify a traditional mortgage into several terms, as well as a line of credit. In certain circumstances, that can be quite advantageous, and “inflation- proof” your mortgage. In other circumstances it can cost you large penalties to terminate the plan. • Conventional mortgages are the most commonly used loan registered on a property for no more than 80% of the appraised value or purchase price of the property. Government regulations require mortgage default insurance added if less than 20% down payment is being made on a purchase.

The interest rate for a variable rate mortgage is usually lower than that for a fixed rate mortgage but: • A fixed-rate mortgage locks in your interest rate for the full term so you have the security of knowing your monthly payment will remain the same. • The interest rate of a variable rate mortgage is tied to various fluid market conditions that can increase your interest rate and mortgage payments at any time.

Flexibility:

A flexible mortgage usually includes the ability to change your payment frequency, increase the amount of your regular payments, or apply an additional lump-sum payment each year without a

fee – meaning you can pay off your mortgage faster and save on interest costs.

Portability:

Mortgages usually have an amortization period of 25 years and a locked-in term of five years - however life is not always that “typical”. A new job, new family member or any of life’s other unexpected events can lead to the need to move to a new home. A portable mortgage gives you the option of moving your current mortgage from one property to another (generally subject to a property appraisal).

Assumability:

Another mortgage feature to consider if you intend to ‘move on’. In the event that you need to sell your property before your mortgage maturity date, an assumable mortgage allows you to transfer your mortgage term to the new property owner (subject to standard credit approval) – thus saving on prepayment charges.

Re-advance-ability:

A re-advancable mortgage allows you to re-borrow, or ‘readvance’, the paid-down portion of your mortgage, up to the original registered mortgage amount. This cost saving feature can save you money on the legal fees that are normally associated with a traditional mortgage refinance. There is never a bad time to look closely at your mortgage options – especially when you work through them with your professional advisor to ensure you’re getting the best mortgage for your unique situation. BUILD IT B et ter Mike Holmes Offers Advice On How to Build Smart by Refined Kingston Staff “I’m tired of fixing brand new houses,” says Mike Holmes, star of the hit show, Holmes Makes it Right. So what’s his advice for homeowners? “Spend your money right, understand what you’re buying, and do it right the first time. Simple.”

Holmes, who has been a contractor for more than 30 years, was in Kingston this fall during a meet-andgreet for CaraCo Homes, and gave attendees sound advice when it comes to choosing a builder. Homeowners’ biggest mistake? Not doing their homework on the builder before breaking ground.

“I’ve got some advice: check out your builder,” says Holmes, noting that people who buy based solely on what they see can run into problems. “If your builder’s not working right, you’re going to buy that home and it’s yours forever... if there are problems with it, it’s your problem.” Holmes suggests asking your potential builder a number of things, such as: How long have you been in the business? Do you have any complaints? Where are the areas you’ve built? He also suggests visiting the homes of a builders past clients, and asking them if they’ve encountered any problems – a good builder will have satisfied clients. For this contractor, “It isn’t done until it’s done right,” – which is why it’s so important to do things right the first time, he says, and doing your homework on your builder is the best way to ensure that happens.

FALL & WINTER MOVING

eaves are changing colours and the weather is starting to cool off each day. You are not the only one who is transitioning. Fall and early winter can be considered the best time of year to move.

The Cooler Temperatures - The air is crisp, clear and is much easier to move in compared to the hot and sticky weather summer brings. You or the movers will no longer be sweating while moving. Moving Prices - We all know that the summer is the busiest time of the year to move. The prices won’t be as high as they are in the summer and you will be able to choose the exact time and date of your move. We usually will have plenty of moving supplies such as recycled moving boxes and paper ready for you to use. Also, moving companies are not in high demand as they are in summer season. Travelling – Take advantage of the beautiful scenery fall brings us. Around Kingston and the northern areas there are many trees and bushes changing colour, enjoy the scenery while you are onto your next destination. While you get yourself prepared to move we came up with a few tips to keep in mind. Have a Clean Walkway As the weather grows crisp, leaves begin to fall and gather on walkways, driveways and stairs. Before moving day, make sure your lawn is raked and all pathways to your home are clear and free of leaves, twigs, stones or any other debris. Fallen leaves can create a hazard especially when wet and will increase the chance of falls or injuries. You don’t want this to happen to the crew or yourself while moving heavy furniture or boxes. Keep a broom at the front of the

house so either you or the movers can clear the paths before walking through them. Make sure to bring or buy a broom when you have reached the destination of your new home.

Transferring Schools It may be difficult for children to move in the fall season. Prepare your child before moving, view the new school and talk to their new teacher and ask them to send you new schoolwork. Check the weather The mornings can be cold and the afternoons can be mild. Dress in layers and have rain gear handy, as the weather can be unpredictable. If it does rain or snow, make sure your furniture and boxes are protected. You may use tarps and blankets to cover the furniture and make sure to protect your floors. If you have a garage, use it to place furniture in before you move it inside. Wipe everything before you move it inside.

Opportunity Awaits for Limestone City Investors By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough Photos supplied by IN8 Developments Inc.

It’s an unbeatable opportunity for those seeking investment opportunities within the city, explains Firsten – and not only because of the investor incentives. he Limestone City has long been touted as a great place to work and live. Now, thanks to the Capitol Condo project, it’s also a great place to invest your hard-earned money. Slated to break ground next summer, the Capitol Condo project will be downtown Kingston’s first and only luxury condominium. Located at 223 Princess St., the site of the former Capitol Theatre, the condo boasts an unbeatable Walkscore of 98; it’s an exciting opportunity for investors seeking brand new luxury properties situated conveniently within downtown Kingston’s vibrant core. “Everyone is looking for real estate investment properties, and this one has got it all,” says Darryl Firsten, president of IN8 Developments Inc. “There is value for future owners or occupiers, there is value in it going up in [worth] over time, and there is value in the deep rental market. There is also value in the services that we offer for the investor; there is nowhere else you can get this.” It’s also important to note that The Capitol Condos are filling a void in a niche market; “There’s a lack of this kind of product in the market,” he says. “There are no new luxury condos in downtown Kingston and there is an incredible demand for [this type of living.] The Capitol Condo project offers investors a one-of-a-kind package designed to make peace of mind a top priority. It’s aptly named The Worry-Free Investor Package. “If you don’t plan on living in the unit, we will lease it out for you at a prescribed rental rate for the first year,” explains Firsten. “We will also offer free property management services for the first year so you don’t have to do anything.” Additionally, investors are offered a completely free furniture package. “The unit is furnished entirely, from head to toe,” says Philip Kuperhause, sales and marketing Manager for IN8 Developments. “And on top of that, you get a finishing package that includes all stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, an ensuite washer and dryer, and 9 ft. ceilings. Most units also have balconies with really beautiful views.”

place to live, a safe place to live. It brings people out of homes, and allows them to walk more and integrate more into the city.” The Capitol Condo project is also close to Queen’s University – which means it has great investment quality, says Cohen. “… there is always the potential to rent it to someone; a university student, a graduate, a member of the faculty. It’s close enough to the school that its easy access, but it’s far enough from the school that it’s not right on campus.” This means the condo has a built-in safety factor from an investment standpoint, he explains, because there’s always the possibility to rent the condo to someone. “This project is multidimensional,” he says, “and will attract a lot of different people.” The first release of the project — which was strictly marketed locally — was wildly successful, and sold out quickly. In midNovember, a new release is being offered locally. Investors are encouraged to take advantage of the entry-level pricing. “Pricing will be much higher when the building is actually done, so get in now before prices go up,” warns Firsten. Situated in the heart of downtown Kingston, The Capitol Condos are poised to change the landscape of downtown Kingston forever. For IN8 Developments, it’s exciting to be leading such positive change. “We have been looking for over two years for a location in Kingston,” says Kuperhause. “We are really excited to have this property. It’s really unique…and we’re excited to rejuvenate the space and make it a centrepiece of Kingston.”

Passion Meets Experience With Legacy Fine Homes By Katrina Geenevasen-Garlough

F

or Ruslan Yakoviychuk, quality is not a compromise — it’s a promise.

Born in Ukraine — the third in a successful line of carpenters — Yakoviychuk began prosperous businesses in both Ukraine and Portugal, but harboured dreams of bringing a European flair to construction in Canada. In 2009, those dreams became reality, and Legacy Fine Homes was born. The company’s mission is simple: to provide quality products and services at competitive rates. “I’ll work with any budget,” says Yakoviychuk. “I don’t care if you’re a lawyer or a doctor, or this or that. I treat everybody the same. You get the same quality no matter who you are.”

While some companies favour business models that force upgrades on their clients, Yakoviychuk is proud to do things differently. “What other builders consider to be upgrades, those things come standard in the homes I build,” he says, noting that features like granite countertops, hardwood flooring and ceramic tile can be featured in the homes he builds. “We’re going to put in 100 per cent,” says Yakoviychuk. “You get the full package. With us, everything is included. If there are any small changes, I will take care of them. I want customers to be happy.” Yakoviychuk devotes the same time and attention to each and every home he builds as though he is constructing it for himself. After all, he takes pride in the relationships he builds with his customers, and wants to ensure those connections endure in the future. “I want to build these homes in a way that I would be happy to live in them myself,” he says. Legacy Fine Homes guarantees your home will not disappoint — and that it will be done right the first time. Customer satisfaction certainly speaks for itself. “This is not our first new home, but it is the best quality,” say former clients Judy and Jim. “We moved into our new home January, 2015. When we took possession of our home, there were zero deficiencies. We think that says a lot about Legacy Fine Homes’ quality and their trades and how they take the time to get it right.” Mike G, who built his home in Glenburnie, says Yakoviychuk’s reputation and years of experience sold him. “I was happy with the progress of the construction,” he says. “[Yakoviychuk] made me feel confident that the project was well in hand and that the quality of work was meeting, and in many cases, surpassing expectations. He was flexible in working with me and my wife, understood our intent, and took a personal interest in the project.” Mike says not only was the project completed ahead of schedule and on budget, it was exactly what he was looking for. “The result was a beautiful 2600 sq. ft. bungalow that has since captured the attention of many others. I highly recommend this company to anyone seeking a custom home in the Kingston area.” Yakoviychuk is dedicated not only to building quality homes, but a solid reputation as well. He promises not only to work within any client’s budget, but also to build them a dream home they can be proud of. “I like to give my clients all I can,” he says. “I want to know they will be happy.”

company cannot remain one of the leading homebuilders in the area for nearly 30 years by resting on its laurels. In order to maintain this reputation, a builder must keep abreast of the latest trends, demands and needs of the market. This is precisely why CaraCo Development Corporation is constantly updating the materials, building specifications and designs they employ. Maintaining the trust they’ve earned from their loyal clients who return to them time and again while attracting and satisfying new homebuyers and those arriving in the area demands constant evolution. That evolution means listening to the wants and needs of current clients and keeping a finger on the pulse of the latest developments and trends in the industry. “We’re starting to blend a little bit of a contemporary design with more of a heritage design. We like to think of it as ‘one

Photos Stephen Wild foot in the past, one foot in the future,’” explains Andrew Snelling, residential designer with CaraCo Development Corporation. “We’re taking the clean lines, simplified floorplans and the idea that form should follow function, and we’re really trying to blend that in with more of the traditionally-styled homes. This gives homebuyers a fresh look, a fresh floorplan — something new.” The open-concept designs with updated finishes and upgrade packages are attracting attention from many different types of homebuyers. They can meet the needs and dreams of many clients, from first time homeowners, to those looking to downsize in their retirement, he says. By offering these innovative designs in all four of their current developments, CaraCo Development Corporation is trying to offer something for every potential buyer, in areas all around the city.

Greenwood Park West in Kingston’s east end offers lush green space and a peaceful neighbourhood setting, just minutes away from CFB Kingston and the downtown core. In the city’s west end, Woodhaven and Woodhaven West are part of CaraCo’s master-planned community that features walking trails, parks, close proximity to schools and the local commercial district. In the popular Lyndenwood area, CaraCo’s Trails Edge subdivision offers a central location that is close to major commercial outlets and the Cataraqui Centre, all while feeling removed from the buzz and traffic of the city. In all four developments, CaraCo offers a wide variety of home styles. What’s more, says Snelling, is that no matter what the style or location, homebuyers becoming homeowners with CaraCo Development Corporation all share the benefits of the company’s dedication to high standards in building quality homes. “We like the idea of building the best home possible no matter what the budget is,” he says, noting that CaraCo is Kingston’s only homebuilder partnered with the Holmes Approved Homes Program, which means CaraCo was chosen for the program by Mike Holmes and his company based on their dedication to sustainability and quality construction. “The amount of attention that we pay to the way we build a house may not speak to every homebuyer, but every homebuyer will reap the benefits,” Snelling continues. “We’re building our houses beyond the building code minimums. Customers don’t always see that, but they’re going to feel the difference when they’re living in the home.” CaraCo Development Corporation Suite 101, 234 Concession St. 613-542-8400 inquiry@caraco.net www.caraco.net

With Concord Homes managing both the design and construction phases of a project, clients aren’t faced with piecing the process together and only need to deal with one point of contact the entire time. In the end, the client experience isn’t so much a time-consuming burden, but rather an enjoyable experience with as much or as little involvement as they desire, Mack explains. In short, the client saves time, aggravation and money by avoiding any miscommunications or unforeseen issues, and is left with a home they love which is built to discerning standards.

o one knows what you want better than you do – and this is particularly true when it comes to your home. It’s this sentiment that is at the very core of the designto-build services offered by Concord Homes. With owner Martin Mack at the helm, Concord Homes works closely with clients to ensure each project runs smoothly and results in a home that is everything the client wants – while hopefully exceeding those expectations in more ways than one. Working with Concord Homes through the design-to-build process can start as early as the moment a client begins to look at properties. With the client’s needs and complete vision in mind, Mack will view properties alongside his clients, offering insight and experience – this allows both the client and the Concord team the foresight to ensure a property will work for what the client has in mind, and to avoid any issues or frustrations later on. Additionally, Mack takes into account what his clients have planned for the future, adding another layer of foresight to the designing and building process, and avoiding the need for any invasive or costly projects down the road.

“What’s more important is being able to communicate with clients in order to bring their dreams to fruition.” - Martin Mack, Concord Homes

“The process for a truly custom home is one where the builder and the homeowner work together,” he says, noting that building a relationship with his clients is as important as building the actual house itself. “We find out how they are going to live in their house, how long they are going to live there… they have design input and flexibility – we work with them to choose materials, concepts and all the finishing touches – so the more information we have from the homeowner, the better we can build for them.” Founded in 1999, Concord Homes is a qualified R-2000 ENERGY STAR and GREEN HOUSE builder, and Mack brings his extensive experience in carpentry, construction and contractor management to each project from start to finish. Concord Homes constantly strives to incorporate innovative technologies and materials that benefit their clients, all while keeping the homeowner’s experience as smooth and seamless as possible. Whether you come to Concord Homes with preexisting designs, an idea to transform a property, or simply the vision of the home you’ve always dreamed of, Mack and his team offer one company dedicated to just that: delivering what you want. “We always tell people that the building part is the easy part,” Mack says. “What’s more important is being able to communicate with clients in order to bring their dreams to fruition.” RK
