EDITOR-IN-CHIEF’S FIRST WORD I can’t begin to express how excited I am to be launching this inaugural issue of ReFINEd Kingston Magazine. What you’re holding in your hands is the end result of months of hard work on behalf of an amazing team; a team that has become more like a family since we began working together for Fine Lifestyles Magazine in 2013. When I took some time off earlier this year for maternity leave after the birth of my daughter Chloe, I couldn’t have dreamed I’d have the chance to work on a new-andimproved version of what we once were. We’ve happily re-branded, and are excited to share with you all the changes we’ve made. This magazine truly belongs to you, Kingston. It’s all about our city’s amazing people, businesses and events that make the Limestone City the true delight that it is to live in. We’re so lucky to call this place home. “Satin is making a comeback,” says Michelle Pilon, owner of Lovebird Bridal Boutique. “Satin will adorn simple and timeless gowns with clean, sleek lines this season,” she explains. Meanwhile, overskirts offer versatility with the ability to have two gowns in one. Such separates allow you to mix and match your favourite top and bottom to create a look that is truly you. For added interest and dimension, consider layered skirts. For an overall softness, flowing fabrics are the way to go.

Sleek and slim cuts are in, says Stephen Murano, owner of Murano’s Formalwear. “The lapels on the jackets are more of a slimmer width, which extenuates a more slim-fit,” he explains, adding that now more than ever, suits are becoming customized to their wearer, with the sides of the jackets brought in for an added customized look. A one-button jacket is also in fashion now, because the style always hits the wearer at his more flattering areas. As for the length, consider a shorter jacket. The style shows more leg and makes you look taller. What about colour? The grey suit is still trendy, says Murano, however, various shades of blue are growing more popular. Consider a shade of navy or midnight blue for stunning visual impact.

Hair “Soft, effortless styles and updos became popular in 2015 and they aren’t going anywhere,” says Ceilidh Mcleod, senior stylist at Diva Salon and Day Spa. “By stepping away from super sleek and structured updos, it enables the bride to have that special look they want while still feeling like themselves. Braids mixed into buns, and curls pulled away from the face are a great look for texture and an individual look.”

Flowers A trend that has been around for a couple of years is the use of burlap and babies’ breath in bouquets, as well as the use of mason jars for table arrangements, says Helene Tohill, owner of Plants and Pots - Flowers and Fine Gifts. “People are embracing the simple country look,” she explains. Very soft colours of blush that include hydrangeas, roses and Queen Anne’s lace hand-tied with delicate greens are extremely popular and will continue to be in 2016.

wo-year-old Reid McCallan (affectionately known as ‘Pip’) loves music. According to her adoring mom Tara, if there’s a beat happening anywhere, she’s dancing. A middle child, she also adores her two brothers, a good, old-fashioned slice of peanut butter toast and her puppy, Deacon. She’s also an avid cuddler, and has a laugh that starts in her toes and bubbles up and out of her body. What doesn’t define this wondrous little girl who rocks pink eyeglasses like no one else can? She has Down syndrome.

Born with congenital heart defects, congenital cataracts, hypotonia, hypothyroidism and Down syndrome, Pip — whose smile has the ability to light up a room — has had eight

operations throughout her short life, including heart surgery. “When you have a baby, it’s supposed to be this joyous time when people are telling you ‘congratulations, and ‘she’s beautiful’ and all this kind of stuff. And for us, it was kind of bogged down in Pip’s diagnosis,” says her mom. People were saying, ‘I’m sorry’, or ‘You’ve been chosen,’ or all these things that have negative aspects to it, and it really shook me how some doctors and others handled it.” For this spirited mother of three, it just wasn’t the tone she wanted set for her daughter, and her blog, Happy Soul Project, was born. It was her own way of sharing Pip’s diagnosis — and her ever-present optimism, hope and happiness with others. “Pip has rocked my world, changed my perspectives and

She says she’s thankful fate decided to paint their lives a little outside the lines — and wants to encourage others to see the beauty in living a life that may not be seen as ordinary. “I live my life that way, and I lived my life that way before, but then having this kind of situation where you’re forced to see outside of expectations of what it means to have a child…I think it has changed me….it really makes me live day-by-day, and I hope to inspire others to really see their lives outside of the lines — to see the beauty in something a little out of the ordinary, and try to be grateful with all the ups and downs.” True to its word, the blog has successfully broken down stigmas, changed perspectives and celebrated differences — not only with McCallan’s beautiful musings on her family, but with various initiatives, as well. Kick-It-Capes, sewn by anyone willing to donate time and fabric to the initiative, have been sent to more than 3,000 kids around the world fighting cancer or other serious illnesses. Happy Soul Project’s #differentisbeautiful Campaign celebrates the beauty in difference by featuring children in their annual calendar. The 2016 calendar has already been launched. “This year, it features 48 children with exceptionalities, rare disorders, cancer and vast syndromes, all proud to celebrate who they are,” says McCallan. Thirdly, the Awesome Eh Act encourages readers to complete a random act of kindness once a month, leaving people with nothing left to say but “Awesome Eh?”.

am often asked, “Can I do more than yoga for fitness during pregnancy?” Yes, most definitely! However, knowing what is safe, what can be done and how it should be done matters. General cookie cutter training programs are not applicable to this special demographic and each pregnancy should be assessed individually. The optimal scenario is to work on your fitness before becoming pregnant, but you can certainly start a training program safely during pregnancy. The PARQ Med X for Pregnancy form can be found under ‘training forms’ at www.conquertraning.guru. Created by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, this physical readiness questionnaire is a great tool to use as a launching pad. This form includes prenatal exercise guidelines, signs and symptoms to watch for, risk factors, a self-assessment and an authorization form to be completed by your doctor or caregiver eight to 12 weeks into the pregnancy. The key fitness priorities for pregnancy are: • Postural strength and endurance • Core stability • Flexibility and symmetry • Main mover muscular strength • Cardiovascular stamina • Relaxation

As a pregnancy progresses, the increased forward load at the abdomen and chest can result in poor posture and cause a multitude of problems such as back pain, headaches, sciatica, calf cramps and knee discomfort. Training for postural strength and endurance is critical to minimizing these discomforts. Core stability and core awareness will help to maintain neutral pelvic position as the pregnancy progresses. Strong core stability can usually reduce or eliminate prenatal and postpartum back

discomfort, so it is well worth the effort. When fitness training, everyone should evaluate their body symmetry. Poor symmetry equals poor mechanics. Strength and flexibility symmetry differences are exaggerated during pregnancy, often significantly affecting moving mechanics. Functionality is important. Can daily tasks and activities be performed pain free with good technique, strength and stamina? That is the goal of functional training. Most women work during their pregnancy and if they already have a young child at home they are still working when they get home at the end of the day. Muscular and cardiovascular strength and endurance training can be a game changer in eliminating exhaustion, decreasing discomforts and preventing injuries. Sleeping can be difficult for many people and pregnancy only further complicates sleep. Practicing breathing, visualization and progressive relaxation techniques early in your first pregnancy is incredibly helpful and very useful during birthing and the postpartum period. It is also a good idea to consider sleep ergonomics as the pregnancy progresses. See a trainer, physiotherapist or occupational therapist for tips and solutions for sleep positioning. If you are pregnant, thinking about pregnancy or know someone who is pregnant, seek information and guidance to make the most of the pregnancy. It is very tricky to start fitness training after the baby arrives, so don’t delay. Pregnancy is no time for excuses. The key is to make the most of that time and be powerful! They are particularly noisy pieces of equipment but provide the specialized breathing assistance that these babies need while their lungs develop. “One parent told me how soothing they felt the sound of the ventilator was,” said Dr. Robert Connelly, medical director of Pediatrics at KGH. “When they walked into the nursery and heard the ventilator, they knew their baby was always better.” “After you’ve been there for so long you hear things like ‘Callie is intubated again’ and you realize it’s probably for the best so she can be more relaxed,” explained Stephanie, “but at first, I was in tears thinking about how she was struggling.” Stephanie and Joe grew accustomed to life in the NICU. After a few weeks, their daughters had stabilized to a point where the new parents could participate in their care. Kingston is home to one of only eight NICU departments in the province of Ontario that is outfitted with the equipment that Cayden and Callie needed to survive. Stephanie and Joe, who live in Napanee, were able to visit their children at the hospital every day for four months— something that might not have been possible had they needed to travel far from home.

nder normal circumstances, giving birth to twin girls on Dec. 24 would be the perfect early Christmas gift for first-time parents. But Callie and Cayden Reid were born prematurely at 27 weeks. They spent their first four months fighting for their precious little lives in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Kingston General Hospital (KGH).

On Dec. 24, 2014, Stephanie Montroy was preparing for the holidays and shopping for some last-minute Christmas baking supplies. She was 27 weeks pregnant, and had seen her doctor the day before. “I was experiencing a lot of cramping,” she said, but her doctor reassured her it was “just pregnancy.” But Stephanie knew that something wasn’t right. She followed her intuition and some advice from her mother and called KGH, and was advised to make her way to the hospital for an exam.

“They checked me out, and then I felt this huge burst,” explained Stephanie. “The doctor just said, ‘You better get your family in here. Something’s happened.’” That burst was Stephanie’s water breaking, 17 weeks ahead of schedule. “I don’t even think it dawned on me that I was going to be in NICU,” said Stephanie, “I was just thinking about being a mom.” Stephanie was immediately given medication to try to postpone the delivery as long as possible, but her baby girls, Cayden and Callie, were born on Christmas Eve, Cayden weighing 1lb. 8oz. and Callie at 2lb. 1oz.

“Their hands looked just like adult hands, scaled down,” said Stephanie’s partner, Joe Reid. “They had wrinkles on their knuckles and everything, but the whole thing was the size of a thumbnail.” After a few precious moments with their mother in the delivery room, Cayden and Callie were whisked to the NICU where they were hooked up to special life-giving technology to help them breathe and to measure their vital signs. For new parents, the sights and sounds of the NICU were stressful. “When you’ve got a pound and a half baby that looks like it’s living off a computer, and then that computer starts to siren, you immediately think your baby is dying,” explained Joe. “It’s scary at first, but what we learned after a week or two is that it’s normal.” Lungs are the last organ to develop in newborns, which means that Callie and Cayden needed the assistance of

The Tenors: Soulful Voices Join Together Under One Sky

Some of the music is not what one would expect from a tenor group – which is precisely why The Tenors have seen the success they have with this album. “It’s just more of us trying

to reinvent what a tenor group is and can be,” says Murray. “We see ourselves more of a band and allowing the music to come from us individually and as a group to make sure it stands on its own. These decisions on these songs really come from the four of us. We really listen to our audience and follow our hearts and it seems to be working for us so far.” Doing covers of some of the world’s most beloved songs was at times intimidating, says Murray, but the group did it with passion, and they did it well. “These are songs that stand the test of time and are loved the world over,” says Murray. “When you take a song on like that, you make sure that you do the song justice but also make it different on your own. We’re trying to make it significant for this day and age that we’re in now.” Having such a magical combination of voices doesn’t hurt, either. “All four boys are committed to their craft and devoted to their fans, and desperately wanting to create something that will last, that will leave a legacy,” says Murray. “We’re all very different singers all coming together to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts. We are pop, we are classical, we are rock, we are folk, we are old world and new world. We are all different stylistically, but we come together to create something unique. And I think that really is the crux of what has kept us going is being able to make something so different work so well and be unique at the same time.” RK

How do you grow great grapes? Well, to begin with, you choose a favourable site; ideally with warm, dry summers and poor, stony, well-drained soils. If you have to irrigate, do so cautiously. Ration the water source. If you give a vine rich soil and plenty of moisture, it will put all of its efforts into giving you bountiful layers of leaves. Pruning is essential to shaping and disciplining the vine and to keep it from producing too much fruit. Then what? At harvest time, the onus is on the vineyard manager and his crew to pick gently, by hand, into small baskets or trays and deliver the grapes — immaculately, lying whole and attached to their bunches — to the winery promptly. You’ve got my attention. What happens next? Before I go on, let me stress the importance of promptness. However brilliant the technical skills the winemaker possesses, barely adequate wines will result from bashed-about, hot, throbbing grape bunches sitting in an open-trailer in the midday sun for four hours. How do you know when the grapes have reached ripeness? Well, with wine grapes, winemakers know that ‘sugar’ ripeness is different from what is called ‘phenolic’ ripeness, which means the ripeness of the skins and the other components in the grape. For example, in hot wine-growing regions, if you’re vinifying a grape varietal whose habitual home is a cooler location, sugar ripeness reaches quickly but the phenolic ripeness lags behind. What happens when the grapes have made it to the winery? Let’s talk about red and white wine production. What colour do you think the juice of a Pinot Noir grape is?

grapes; colourless. All of the colour in red grapes lie in their skins. White wines need to have the skins removed as soon as possible. Red wines, by contrast, will spend the next two to three weeks fully dressed, soaked in the colourless juice with the grapes. Red wine is made from fermented grapes while whites are made from fermented grape juice. The trick with white wine production is pressing the grapes gently, keeping the juice cool and protected from oxygen. Where does the alcohol come from? In a sense, it’s excrement. The yeasts gobble up the sugar from the grapes and excrete alcohol from one sluice, figuratively speaking, and carbon dioxide from the back side. When there’s no more sugar, or when the alcohol level reaches above 16-17 per cent, the yeasts give up and fall to the bottom of the vat. No more excrement. So that’s it. Do dead yeasts mean the end of the trail? In the case of fresh, lively and austere whites, yes. All red wines, however, and the fuller-bodied whites will pass through a final stage, known as malolactic fermentation or MLF. MLF is a bacteriological transformation, whereas bacteria takes over where yeast left off; the difference being instead of converting sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide, they convert malic acid into lactic acid. And why does this matter? The result is to soften and round out the wine. Lactic acid tastes ‘milkier’ than malic acid, which is what you get in apples. For crisp, tangy whites with a gush of acidity, the MLF gets blocked. You might even, for instance, choose to blend barrels that have gone through MLF with those that haven’t to craft a particular style. After that, it’s on to cool cellars and restful dark places.

Determine the right quantity of cheese If you’re serving it as an hors d’oeuvre, plan for 1 to 1.5 ounces of each cheese type per person. If it’s for a light meal, plan for 2 to 3 ounces per person.

“It’s exciting to have the opportunity to pick out anything you like, unlike in a corporate office,” says Peggy Reid of Reid & Siemenson Design Group. “While it’s fun to pour through magazines and websites for ideas, you also need to think carefully about how you will be using the space. For example, an upholstered dining room chair in a fabulous print may look great but may not support your back properly for 40 hours a week. The same is true for desks; while a clean modern glass and lacquered finish may look amazing, it may not be the most practical when you have to lay out all your project files.” Reid says that too much visual stimulation in an office can actually create distraction, and suggests a colour consultation by an interior designer to find something that will work well in the space. “The most important thing when choosing a colour is to find something that inspires and energizes you,” explains Reid. “To determine the best colour it is important to find which colour works best in your situation. Blue tends to influence the most productivity, while yellows

promote creativity.” Using more vibrant colours in artwork, rugs and accessories can be a great way to bring more colours into the room that isn’t distracting while you are working. Your home office will reflect the work that you do; for example, it may be different for someone who sees clients in their office compared to someone who works alone. Reid points out that a psychologist may want subdued colours, a more formal desk and comfortable seating, while a graphic artist may showcase an edgier style to demonstrate their creative side to potential clients. “In both cases, it is important to evoke a professional setting,” says Reid. “If you are sharing the space with family members, everything needs to be properly put away.” When sharing an office with family, it’s important to set up a separate space for your work and another area for homework and crafts. At the end of the day, it makes all the difference to spend 15-20 minutes cleaning up your workstation, putting away loose papers and closing the

computer, just like you would if you weren’t at home. Having proper storage is vital for productivity. If you have a bookcase, don’t overstuff it with messy binders and papers. Reid suggests mixing in books and great accessories, so when you are holding a Skype meeting you have a nice backdrop. If you’re lucky enough to have an extra bedroom for your office, utilize the closet to maximize shelving and ensure everything has a home. “It’s important to have everything you need in your office, so you aren’t running out every time you need a stapler or an envelope,” Reid points out. “You may consider putting in a mini fridge to keep cold water and snacks on hand.” Practical concerns, such as lighting, should be foremost in your mind. There should be sufficient task lighting over your desk, and placing your desk next to a window will provide natural light. “A good quality blind such as a roller shade with at least three per cent opacity is important so that you can

view your screen during the sun’s peak times,” Reid says. “To soften the look, consider adding soft drapery panels in a fun colour or print.” Working from home provides more flexible hours, but that often translates into longer workdays. Health and wellness can be designed into your space, and a treadmill desk or standing desk is worth considering. Using an exercise ball to sit on is also a great idea to help with core strength and posture, and can be put away when you need to buckle down on a deadline. Having a yoga mat on hand is also a great idea, so you can stretch out and relax while taking a break to breathe. “With today’s technology and work share programs, more and more people are working from home and creating an optimal work/life balance,” Reid concludes. “If you are one of the lucky ones to do this, it’s worth it to spend the time to create the best environment for your office space.” RK

My wallet already has a lot of cards in it, and I wouldn’t have space for them.” Additionally, Basit identified a number of problems with other social advertising platforms. Social media advertising is increasingly difficult, he says, noting that the organic reach of Facebook posts has dropped significantly. “Say, for example, you have 1,000 likes on your business Facebook page,” he explains. “If you do an organic post, it will only reach 10 per cent or less of those followers. That’s why businesses have to buy posts or continually boost their posts.” As well, many online email-based deals and coupons are valid only for first-time customers. While this may increase traffic through business doors initially, the concept doesn’t help businesses to

In two recent studies – The Value of Financial Planning1 and The Value of Advice: Report2 - a majority of Canadians agreed that by choosing financial advice, they accumulated more assets and were better prepared, financially, for retirement. Over 50 per cent reported they were on track to reach their desired lifestyle in retirement, compared to just 18 per cent of those who don’t receive any financial advice. Most also felt integrated financial planning improved their ability to save, made them less concerned about their financial situation and feel better about having the discretionary income to lead the life they want – and very importantly, it gave them greater peace of mind. Do you need a financial plan? Yes – if you have an income, a family or hopes of one in the future, retirement lifestyle dreams, and for many other financially-rooted reasons that are unique to you. In general, your financial plan should include investment planning, cash flow planning, education planning, estate planning, insurance planning, retirement planning and income tax planning. But the key to a successful financial plan is tailoring each of those elements to you and your needs. To achieve that, a competent professional advisor will take you through this six-step planning process:

1. Goal setting – to define and prioritize your goals and concerns.

2. Data gathering – bringing together pertinent financial

arlier this year the Conservative government increased the Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) annual contribution limit to $10,000 from $5,500, and therefore made the cumulative limit for TFSAs now $41,000. This now means that an individual could open a TFSA and as long as they have not contributed before could deposit up to $41,000 into the plan and enjoy tax free income from the plan. Money that is made inside a TFSA, or that is withdrawn from a TFSA is not taxable, and mainly because of higher contribution limits and cumulative amounts, TFSAs are now competing with other savings plan like Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), and non-registered plans as the savings plan of choice for individuals. TFSAs can hold nearly all the same investments as RRSPs which include stocks, bonds, mutual funds, preferred shares, exchange traded funds, guaranteed investment certificates, and cash. When faced with these possibilities, the individual is offered more variety, and therefore more investment choices and along with proper prudence and due diligence, better planning strategies could be created. So for example, an individual with high interest income, or an individual that has high growth assets could shelter the income tax from these assets by simply placing these assets into a TFSA. (High growth assets could still be transferred to a TFSA provided the capital gain is low when transferring). When withdrawing from a TFSA, the income is not taxed as opposed to an RRSP where the full amount of the withdrawal is taxable and claimed on the individual’s tax return. This would prove to be advantageous for high income retirees who are facing the Old Age Security (OAS) clawback if the individual’s

net income is over $72,809 for 2015. The government imposes a clawback on OAS payments if the individual’s net income is over the above amount, and the amount of the clawback is equal to the individual’s OAS payments or 15% of the amount by which the net income exceeds the threshold whichever is less. For 2015, the full amount of the OAS benefit will be eliminated when net income (including OAS benefit) is over $117,000. (May be wise to split income with spouse if not already doing so). When withdrawing from an RRSP or RRIF it may be advantageous to withdraw more and then deposit excess funds into an TFSA providing the individual is using proper tax planning, and the individual is within his/her limits for the TFSA. If the individual is in the lowest tax bracket and lowest marginal tax rate this procedure would result in paying the lowest amount of tax on the RRSP withdrawal, and gives the individual the opportunity to deposit the maximum amount to their TFSA. Future withdrawals would eventually be withdrawn from the TFSA which would result in no tax being paid. Withdrawing more from the RRSP would result in drawing down the balance faster which may result in less of a future tax burden for the individual’s estate. Individuals should also take advantage of the TFSA’s current rules before the new Liberal government takes place and perhaps makes changes to the TFSA rules. As always when individual’s make decisions that involve tax planning, estate planning, and retirement planning they should seek out the proper planning professional to help them with proper guidance and advice.

A 19th-century building, the four-storey, red brick structure was constructed in 1882, once serving as a cotton mill for the Kingston Cotton Manufacturing Company. The City of Kingston purchased the property 50 years later, intending for it to run as a woolen mill instead, under lease of the Hield Bros. of England. The mill thrived during and beyond the Great Depression and the war. It wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until 1966, when synthetic fabrics gained momentum, that the mill closed. Three years later, St. Francis Developments took over and the building began undergoing renovations to section the open-concept building into office space for multiple businesses. During its first century, the building was maintained through a continual refurbishing program, allowing the ancient structure to survive and become the historic building it is today. The major additions and renovations began in 1993, all the while keeping the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s natural character in mind. The wooden floors have been well-preserved with many coats of oil. During restoration, the brick was only sandblasted and pointed, and no treatment was needed whatsoever on the

Most of the time searchers never navigate away from the 1st results page so it is ultimately important that we show up somewhere on the 1st page for the keywords of our businesses. How to get “Ranked” Breaking it down to the essentials getting on the first page takes good SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and that is the process of setting up your website and offsite marketing to accurately show search engines what you are all about. It all starts with Keywords Google is essentially looking at the content of your page from the top down for who you are and what you do. They look in the Title, the Headings, the ALT descriptions of images, URLS and so much more. The content is the most important aspect of your website and by using your keywords everywhere you can

tell search engines what they need to know. Utilize headings, titles, bolds, and emphases to support your keywords in your content. elcome to your mid-50s, a time when you notice your world has begun to shift. Children are often grown and your mortgage and other debts have shrunk or are all together gone. By age 55, many business owners have a strong, successful business that affords them a lifestyle they worked hard to achieve. With few of the traditional needs for life insurance, why do so many people in this situation continue their coverage? The answer is simple. They own life insurance because it helps them protect against the concerns that exist at this stage of life including tax, estate and succession planning. Let’s look at an example of how life insurance can play an important role in achieving succession and estate planning objectives. Stella is a healthy and vibrant 65-year-old widow. Since her husband died, she has owned 100 per cent of the shares of her family’s successful small business corporation. Her other assets include her home, the family cottage and a significant sum of registered and non-registered investments. Stella is now retired and her son Jack works in the business. Since his father’s passing, Jack is leading the business. He is talented and hard-working and Stella wants to ensure he assumes full ownership of the business upon her death. Stella’s daughter Jillian has moved to Toronto to pursue a different path. Stella plans to leave Jillian the remaining value of her investments, her primary residence and the family cottage Jillian loves dearly. Stella has recently begun estate planning with a goal of reducing taxes due at death, helping ensure her estate is distributed fairly between her two adult children, and safeguarding cash to cover her final tax bill. Stella has worked with her trusted accountant and lawyers to achieve these goals. She also wants to work with a financial security advisor

to investigate what role life insurance can play in her planning. As part of her tax-reduction planning, Stella will complete an estate freeze and move forward with strategies to purify her corporation. Let’s assume that after implementing these measures Stella’s final tax bill (at death) on the deemed disposition of her shares, her cottage and her remaining registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) is approximately $570,000 today and $500,000 at age 89. Stella considers the options her children will have to pay her final tax bill. The options include: • Setting aside some of her investments today to provide funds to cover her final tax bill • Hope her house sells quickly after her death (although the investments and the proceeds of the sale of the house are intended for Jillian not Canada Revenue Agency) • Take the required funds out of the company (although this is not a tax-friendly option and this option could negatively impact business operations) • Borrow the money (but her children will need to pay it back plus interest) • Purchase a level cost permanent life insurance policy that pays out a tax free death benefit After considering these options Stella decides to purchase a permanent life insurance policy. Ultimately, Stella moved ahead with the life insurance option because it made sense for her situation and her budget. She also appreciates knowing that upon her passing, the final pieces of her estate plan will move into action — including her children receiving a tax-free life insurance death benefit to pay her final tax bill. The information provided is based on current laws, regulations and other rules applicable to Canadian residents. Switch engine oil: Oil lubricates the engine so it can function properly, but not all automobile oil is the same. We live in a cold climate, consider switching to a thinner, less viscous oil. For example, a 10W-30 might be ideal for hot summer weather, but a thicker 5W-30 is better for when temperatures dip below freezing. Maintain a car wash routine: Due to the presence of ice, salt and sand on the roads, washing your vehicle in the winter is even more important than the summer. Getting a car wash and a fresh coat of wax before the temperature begins to drop can be your first line of defense against winter elements. Vehicular corrosion occurs most quickly when the temperature rises and falls below freezing. The International Carwash Association recommends finding a car wash that is part of the WaterSavers program. There are more than 1,500 environmentally friendly car washes worldwide enrolled in the program that meet water quality and usage standards. Check the battery: Cold weather can take a toll on your car’s battery. Before you get stranded, give your battery a once-over to make sure it’s in tip-top shape. Check the cables, terminals and fluid and look

for anything abnormal. Some battery retailers will conduct a complementary car battery assessment if you’d prefer an expert analysis. 4. Update engine coolant: Just because it’s chilly doesn’t mean your engine can’t overheat. To protect your engine against corrosion and to help ensure it doesn’t overheat, ask your car technician to change to a coolant with ethylene glycol, which has antifreeze properties. While replacing coolants, ask the technician to make sure all fluids are topped off, including window washer solution. 5. Get a grip on tire safety: It’s critical to check your tires to keep you and your passengers safe. Each tire should have an adequate amount of tread to properly grip the road, aso be sure to your tires are properly inflated to ensure optimum handling, safety, and fuel efficiency. (BPT)

one are the days when staircases served only a utilitarian function in the home — functional, yes, but certainly not pretty. Today, that’s all changed; stairs have become freestanding sculptural structures that no longer blend into the background of today’s open-concept homes. An industrial-style combination of metal, glass and wood is immensely popular these days, with many homeowners opting for staircases that seem to float within a space. Steel, which is the most durable of all materials, provides non-imposing strength and can handle plenty of wear and tear. Because it’s so malleable, this material also allows designers and homeowners to achieve a look that is unique to their own home. Meanwhile, glass allows the home’s design to remain open and airy. For a more organic appearance, some homeowners opt to add some wood to the design of their stairs. Cherry, mahogany, maple and oak are homeowners’ top picks for stair treads. Bearing safety in mind, many homeowners feel more comfortable with carpeted stairs — especially if they have young children. Start with a high-quality under-pad, says Mark Rodrigues, sales manager at Kingston Carpetworld.

This cost saving feature can save you money on the legal fees that are normally associated with a traditional mortgage refinance. “I’ve got some advice: check out your builder,” says Holmes, noting that people who buy based solely on what they see can run into problems. “If your builder’s not working right, you’re going to buy that home and it’s yours forever... if there are problems with it, it’s your problem.” Holmes suggests asking your potential builder a number of things, such as: How long have you been in the business? Do you have any complaints? Where are the areas you’ve built? He also suggests visiting the homes of a builders past clients, and asking them if they’ve encountered any problems – a good builder will have satisfied clients. For this contractor, “It isn’t done until it’s done right,” – which is why it’s so important to do things right the first time, he says, and doing your homework on your builder is the best way to ensure that happens.

While you get yourself prepared to move we came up with a few tips to keep in mind. Have a Clean Walkway As the weather grows crisp, leaves begin to fall and gather on walkways, driveways and stairs. Before moving day, make sure your lawn is raked and all pathways to your home are clear and free of leaves, twigs, stones or any other debris. Fallen leaves can create a hazard especially when wet and will increase the chance of falls or injuries. You don’t want this to happen to the crew or yourself while moving heavy furniture or boxes. Keep a broom at the front of the

house so either you or the movers can clear the paths before walking through them. Make sure to bring or buy a broom when you have reached the destination of your new home.

Transferring Schools It may be difficult for children to move in the fall season. Prepare your child before moving, view the new school and talk to their new teacher and ask them to send you new schoolwork. Check the weather The mornings can be cold and the afternoons can be mild. Dress in layers and have rain gear handy, as the weather can be unpredictable. If it does rain or snow, make sure your furniture and boxes are protected. You may use tarps and blankets to cover the furniture and make sure to protect your floors. If you have a garage, use it to place furniture in before you move it inside. Wipe everything before you move it inside.
