Reece Oliver Part I Architectural Assistant

A selection of works between the years of 2015 - 2018, demonstrating my architectural skills across buildings of varying scales and typologies

// cv I am a 22 year old graduate from Newcastle University seeking a Part I architectural assistant position. After completing my undergraduate studies, I am eager to progress onto a work placement in order to apply the skills and techniques I have learned during my time at both art college and university, designing at a multitude of scales: from social housing, to art museums and open public spaces. I have a strong will to further the study of architecture, and am excited to translate my creativity into real life practice.

museum of unnatural history // graduation project

Southwark, London, UK After a fire in 2013, the Cuming Museum situated on Elephant + Castle’s Walworth Road was forced to close due to damages sustained to the buildings roof. The brief for this project therefore focused on re-provisioning the displaced museum, which has been in active public use since 1906 and has served as a cultural hub for the history of Southwark. The museum contained artefacts such as scientific equipment, old weaponry and electrical systems found from looking through the museums online archive, which categorised the artefacts by their material classification. ‘The Museum of Unnatural History’ displays a range of carefully selected artefacts in a series of three exhibition rooms, which each focus on celebrating the tactile qualities of man made materials namely: metals, ceramics, and glassware. The building plays on the idea of misperception, where the exhibition spaces can be accessed in a variety of ways to change peoples perspectives on the materials presented.

museum of unnatural history // graduation project

A key concept of the design was to enable people to ‘weave’ in and out of the new museum and the old building. I created a wrap-around exterior walkway along the fragmented facade of the existing building which acts as threshold between new and old architectures.

03 / 14

interactive facade The walkway is broken up by a two-part facade system, made up of steel framed glazing which supports a series of charred timber fins. Having the timber sections rotated at varying angles from each other creates an ever-changing perception of the building, as natural light penetrates through the spacings at different times.

overlapping circulation Looking at how void spaces could be used to penetrate through overlapping walkways and staircases to create a dynamic and user interactive space, where there is no direct flow of circulation.

lighting + materiality (left) Shows a lighting experiment I conducted to explore how using overlapping timber fins as a facade could create an ever-changing atmosphere of the interior space. The shadows cast by the gaps between the strips of timber would distort throughout the day, changing peoples experienece of the museum.

housing scheme in context with public walkway

aerial walkway The proposed walkway sits above a one-screen cinema and a set of public toilets, offering activities for people of all ages with a cafe, tree climbing and seating featuring along the way.

co-operative living The geometry of the dwelling was taken from the neghbouring row of apartments, with exaggerations made to the protruding building angles. The building as a whole is split into two seperate family houses, with a shared roof garden which acts as a privatised viewing deck to the public green space below.

berwick arts + culture museum // 2nd year project This project focused on re-provisioning an existing furniture warehouse into an arts and culture museum for the people of Berwick-upon-tweed, in North-East England. The building features a material workshop for artists in residence, as well as a top floor viewing room, which looks over the adjacent buildings out to the coast line of Berwick. The exhibition spaces are scattered in pockets in and around the building, and are connected by walkways which slice across the double-height ground floor space, with an extra opportunity for sculptures to be displayed in the open courtyard at the buildings front entrance.
