Reece Oliver Part I Architectural Assistant

A selection of works between the years of 2016 - 2019, demonstrating my architectural skills across buildings of varying scales and typologies

: cv I am a 23 year old Part I architectural assistant seeking to build on my current experience in this position. After completing more than a year of work experience, I am eager to both develop and broaden my architectural education, applying the skills I have learned from my studies at art college and university. Across this period I have designed at a multitude of scales, which has given me a refined understanding of applying a personal yet contextual design approach across varying typologies. I have a strong will to continue my study of architecture, and am always excited by any opportunity to translate my creativity into real life practice.

Involved heavily with RIBA stages 2, 3 & 4, producing a range of drawing packages to issue for planning. Took a lead role in creating a D&A statement for section 73 planning application, which featured a series of visuals I produced using Revit and Enscape as part of a comparitive study with the previously approved scheme.

The Museum of Unnatural History Walworth Road, London, UK After a fire in 2013, the Cuming Museum situated on Elephant + Castle’s Walworth Road was forced to close due to extensive damages sustained to the building. The brief for this project therefore focused on re-provisioning the displaced museum, which has been in active public use since 1906 and has served as a cultural hub for the history of Southwark. The museum contained an array of man-made artifacts such as scientific equipment, old weaponry and electrical equipment found from looking through the museums online archive, which categorised the artefacts by their material classification. ‘The Museum of Unnatural History’ therefore displays a range of carefully selected artefacts in a series of three main exhibition rooms, which each focus on celebrating the tactile qualities of man-made materials, namely: metals, ceramics, and glassware. The building plays on the idea of misperception, where the exhibition spaces can be accessed from a variety of heights and entry points to change peoples perspectives on the materials presented.

A key concept of the design was to enable people to weave in and out of the new museum and the old building. I created a wrap-around exterior walkway along the fragmented facade of the existing building which acts as threshold between new and old architectures.

interactive facade The walkway is broken up by a two-part facade system, made up of steel framed glazing which supports a series of charred timber fins. Having the timber sections rotated at varying angles from each other creates an ever changing perception of the building, as natural light penetrates through the spacings at different times.

overlapping circulation Looking at how void spaces could be used to penetrate through overlapping walkways and staircases to create a dynamic and user interactive space, where there is no direct flow of circulation.

ailsa wharf tower hamlets, london My time at Sprunt Architects has been focused on delivering a housing scheme situated in East London. Here, we inherited an approved scheme for a housing development of 832 homes, which we had the task of delivering from stage 2 onwards. Bound between the busy A12 and River Lea in Stratford, the site came with a heavy number of constraints. This has resulted in a collective of 7 buildings, each with a considered and refined building order responsive to its positioning within the site. Along the A12, ‘Block M’ acts as a site buffer, with a split building program offering a commercial and office space mix across the first two floors. The middle of the site features two courtyard buildings which are fully residential, and along the waters edge 3 high-rise towers offer views across the River towards Canary Wharf and Greenwich. berwick arts + culture museum : 2nd year project This project focused on re-provisioning an existing furniture warehouse into an arts and culture museum for the people of Berwick-upon-tweed, in North-East England. The building features a material workshop for artists in residence, as well as a top floor viewing room, which looks over the adjacent buildings out to the coast line of Berwick. The exhibition spaces are scattered in pockets in and around the building, and are connected by walkways which slice across the double-height ground floor space, with an extra opportunity for sculptures to be displayed in the open courtyard at the buildings front entrance.
