Stevenage FC Recruitment plan

January 2025 Reece Donnelly @ReeceDSport
Welcome and thank you for reading my 2025 recruitment plan.
The 2025 season has been both challenging and encouraging forAlex Revell’s Stevenage. Sitting 14th in the table with 30 points and boasting an impressive 12 clean sheets, the team has undergone a notable play-style transformation. As we approach the transfer window, the squad has shown resilience, with only one loss in the last eight games—a testament to the season's stability at this level, which should not be underestimated.
However, areas for improvement remain clear, particularly in front of goal and in away performances. These are key focal points as we aim to continue progressing.
Stevenage finds itself at an exciting crossroads. The club is committed to lowering the average squad age, adding more goals to its arsenal, and recruiting players who align with our evolving style of play. This recruitment strategy prioritizes long-term growth and squad development over short-term promotion ambitions.
The players identified in this plan are ones I believe will bring genuine quality to the team. They are selected with a clear vision of how we want to play and to ensure consistent competitiveness in the league. While we’ve seen some "stocking fillers" in past windows, this is the time to build a cohesive, forward-thinking squad.
I hope you enjoy this recruitment plan as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together. Let’s move Stevenage forward!
Stylistic Requirements
● Must thrive in a team that utilizes width, building up play through wide-area overloads, bounce passes, and frequent switches of play.
● Players should rely on the defensive midfielder (the "6") as a key pivot for ball progression.
● Physically dominant in duels, capable of winning the ball high up the pitch through turnovers, and comfortable defending large spaces.
● Emphasis on purposeful possession football—combining physicality and technical ability.
Player Profile
● Stevenage aims to reduce reliance on ageing professionals while maintaining their identity.
● Target players who are physically dominant, highly fit, and adaptable in their game style.
● Squad-building focuses on competitive, versatile players who offer tactical and physical alternatives.
● Players must handle the high-intensity demands ofAlex Revell’s training and game philosophy.
Preferred Formations
● Primarily set up for a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, with potential exploration of a 4-4-2 diamond or a back-three system for added flexibility.
GK - Murphy Cooper, Taye Ashby-Hammond, Dean Bouzanis
LB - Dan Butler
CBs - Dan Sweeney, Carl Piergianni ©, Charlie Goode, Lewis Freestone, Nathan Thompson
RB - Luther James-Wildin, Kane Smith
Central midfielders - Eli King, Louis Thompson, Dan Phillips, Harvey White, Jake Forster Caskey
10s and Wingers - Dan Kemp, Jordan Roberts, Nick Freeman
Out and out wingers - Jake Young, Elliot List
Strikers - Jamie Reid, Tyreece Simpson, Aaron Pressley, Louis Appere
Players returning from long term injury
- Dan Sweeney
- Charlie Goode
- Jake Forster Caskey
- Louis Appere
Under the SCMP(Salary Cost Management Protocol), Stevenage can allocate only 60% of turnover to player-related expenditures. With the club on the brink of breaching this limit, adjustments are necessary. Players will need to leave to free up resources for new signings.
Youth players with potential could provide an avenue for raising funds, especially given rumored interest from Premier League clubs. Strategic sales could ease financial pressure while supporting SCMP compliance. With multiple players potentially leaving , Stevenage has various options to create financial breathing room. Balancing these moves while maintaining squad depth and quality will be crucial to achieving both immediate and long-term goals.
● Dean Bouzanis - Joined as injury cover and will likely return, freeing up a squad spot and associated costs
● Aaron Pressley - Despite opportunities, he hasn’t capitalized on his chances. For his development, finding a club where he can play regularly is ideal, opening up a striker position for Stevenage
● Ben Thompson - His loan spell has been reasonably successful, but not impactful enough to guarantee a future with Stevenage. The club could explore making his move permanent if terms are favorable
● KenAboh - Has been recalled by Norwich
● Tyreece Simpson - Despite struggles, his physical profile aligns with Stevenage’s style, and he’s likely to retain the club’s backing.
● JakeYoung - Unlikely to leave, but fitness and effort concerns have been noted. These may impact his long-term role in the squad.
● Eli King - Has not made the expected impact and may not fit the desired profile, making his future uncertain.
● Kane Smith - Nearly left last season, and limited minutes this campaign could lead to an exit. However, his departure would necessitate a direct replacement so feels unlikely
● TayeAshby-Hammond - As second-choice goalkeeper, his satisfaction with the role is uncertain. If he departs, Stevenage will need to weigh the potential of youth options like Rylee Mitchell and Max Woodford against external replacements. .
Priority 1 signings A striker A winger
A left back alternative (Ideally does both sides)
Priority 2 signing
A number six
● Preferably young purchase with the space to develop and not such an expectancy on gametime
● Not overly heavy financially as January can be the wrong time for significant outlay and tight SCMP regulations.
● Preference a permanent or a loanee with the potential to sign as whilst the player can help us this season, either coming into his prime with us or can be sold on
● League One sides are allowed 22 players registered. Goalkeepers do not count and U21 players do not have to be included so Ken Aboh’s space does not open up a spot
● Stevenage have 20 registered leaving 2 spots remaining but one will inevitably be taken up by Jake Forster Caskey returning
● Any players born in 2004 onwards do not need to be included on the squad list and those that are have had their age highlighted throughout
So Stevenage will have to be a bit more calm, a bit more calculated and it's unlikely to be a hectic one with the aim presumably to keep key squad members where they are. It will be a platform window for the summer window more than it will be a window to kick on this season, as much as the club may believe it is
So realistically we are probably looking at 2 signings and maybe an u21 signing if the profile is there unless significant departures which id rule as highly unlikely
Hours of research looking into the four positions labelled looking at those that could be available to non League One clubs varying from Scottish League, Irish, Football League and of course Non league
Then from a list of 50 in each position there was more hours of research as we whittled down by watching full games, the statistics, not matching the KPIs set out in terms of age/type of transfer to stylistic KPIs in line with what I believe this Stevenage team are
From 200 names and 50 in each position to 20 names and 5 in each position
I have for the most part have selected players that are
● 25 or under
● In the last year of their contract/Openly up for transfer/ Wouldn't command a huge fee/Gettable post-loan
● Have shown huge athletic and physical qualities that can slot into the squad
● Not hugely big names so the club are unlikely to compete hugely with others in our league or lay our any significant financial outlay
So without further ado
The onus on the left currently fallen largely to Dan Butler. Butler whilst excellent is not the proactive, surging left back perhaps Stevenage need sometimes especially when they have a lot of the ball. He can set the teams line high and tends to enjoy putting balls into areas earlier. Lewis Freestone has also played there but very much brings the defensive qualities to that role and Kane Smith has played there in emergencies previously
- Alternate option with tenacious energy and aggressive style and was a different option to what we currently have. Someone that can affect the final third
- Proactive, attacking player OR a player that is versatile enough to push the other flank up
- Still capable in a strong defensive set up, potentially versatile
6ft 2 - 23 years old - Saint Kitts and Nevis - Reading, Tranmere, Minnesota United, Stockport (Loan)
Ethan Bristow is a physically imposing and athletic left-back, known for his pace, strength, and defensive capabilities.
His agility and ability to cover ground quickly make him highly effective in recovering defensively and in one-on-one duels. Offensively, Bristow excels at overlapping runs, stretching the play, and progressing the ball up the pitch, leveraging his athleticism to support attacks.
While he thrives in defensive duties, his play style is dynamic, often looking to create width and contribute to purposeful possession systems. His ability to adapt to different tactical setups and balance defensive responsibilities with offensive support makes him a versatile and valuable option for any team prioritizing wide-area play.
Bristow’s attacking output could benefit from heavy technical refinement, particularly in delivering crosses and contributing in the final third in terms of final product as it tends to be fairly erratic
Fit
Stevenage can maximize Bristow’s effectiveness by providing forward runners who complement his overlapping runs. Though he could improve his assertiveness in challenges, his attributes are ideal for systems emphasizing balance in possession—such as setups where the right-back takes on more advanced roles. Moreover, his profile aligns seamlessly with teams like Stevenage that emphasize pushing forward and creating width in wide areas.
5ft 9 - 23 years old - England - Fulham, Oxford Ciy, Maidenhead,
Asare’s agility, athleticism, and tactical awareness allow him to adapt to different defensive roles, making him a valuable asset
Over the past few years, he has refined his ability to read the game and make crucial interventions.
Despite his strong physical capabilities, he excels at winning fouls, using his intelligence to relieve pressure on his team and help build play from the back. Additionally, his dribbling skills stand out, often driving the ball up the pitch to progress play effectively.
Asare's versatility allows him to slot into different setups, making him a flexible addition to any team. While he’s not a dominant duel winner, his natural athleticism and dribbling ability mean that he can carry the ball up the pitch, helping relieve pressure and initiate attacks.
Asare has predominantly played in teams that are less possession-focused, and his attacking contributions—especially in terms of getting crosses into the box—have been limited. Although a strong dribbler, he tends to rely on this aspect of his game rather than developing more varied offensive contributions, such as crossing and creating chances from wide positions.
His preference for simple passes makes him well-suited to a system where a midfielder, like Louie Thompson at Stevenage, drops deep to make bounce passes and support the buildup. If coached to find the right spaces higher and improve the volume of his attacking output, Asare has the potential to have a significant impact in any team.
6 ft 3 - 24 years old - England - Oxford United, Oxford City, Woking, Barnsley, Gateshead, MK Dons
Lofthouse really come onto the scene in the season in Mike Williamson’s Gateshead and MK Dons sides last season as a front footed wing back.
and style
Known for his agility, pace, and tactical awareness, he excels in making overlapping runs to support attacks and quickly retreating to fulfill defensive responsibilities. His adaptability has been a standout feature, with experience in various roles across different teams, showcasing his commitment and versatility.
Offensively, Lofthouse is proactive, using his dribbling skills and speed to challenge defenders and create opportunities from wide areas. With a high work rate and stamina, he contributes consistently at both ends of the pitch, making him a valuable asset for systems that demand dynamic and dependable wide players.
While his dribbling and forward runs are strong, he sometimes struggles with decision-making under pressure, which can limit his ability to create high-quality chances. Additionally, his defensive positioning and awareness, though generally reliable, could benefit from refinement to handle more tactically sophisticated opposition.
Lofthouse’s natural ability, adaptability and drive makes him perfect for sides like Stevenage that want to use the wide areas to threaten. He is someone who thrives in ball dominant sides, he would be perfect as a player to overload the wide areas due to his natural athleticism. A perfect bit of energy and punch to a more reserved full back/wing back
6 ft 0 - 22 years old - England - Fulham, Maidenhead, Bromley
Idris Odutayo is a versatile and composed defender, capable of operating as anywhere across a back five, although primarily a left back, offering tactical flexibility
His physicality allows him to compete effectively in duels, and his solid defensive awareness, enabling him to anticipate danger and make crucial interventions. But he still holds immense pace
Odutayo is also comfortable on the ball, with a measured approach to passing, progressing the ball and building play from the back. His athleticism and work rate support his ability to cover ground efficiently, contributing to both defensive solidity and offensive transitions.
His passing, though reliable in simple build-up play, could benefit from greater range and vision to better support offensive transitions. Odutayo’s adaptability can also work against him at times, as he may lack the specialized attributes required to dominate in a specific role, such as the offensive aggression expected of modern full-backs. Developing these areas would elevate his overall game and make him a more complete defender
In possession-heavy systems, he could act as a more conservative full-back, providing defensive stability while allowing the opposite flank to take on more attacking responsibilities.Teams that use a balanced style of play would benefit from his ability to maintain shape and make decisive defensive interventions, his comfort on the ball and measured passing make him a good fit for teams that build from the back but do not overly rely on full-backs for advanced creativity.
5 ft 10 - 22 years old - England - Manchester United, Burnley, Rochdale, Barnsley, Dundee
Dodgson's style of play is characterized by his willingness to advance up the flank, providing width and delivering crosses into the box. His defensive contributions are marked by solid positioning and the ability to make crucial interventions when required
He is a versatile left-sided player, capable of operating both as a left-back and left midfielder. he combines his physical attributes of natura pace and a good upper body frame with a strong work ethic and adaptability
While he is a dynamic player capable of advancing up the flank, his crossing accuracy and final-third contributions could benefit from greater refinement. Defensively, though solid in positioning, he occasionally struggles with physical duels against stronger or more experienced opponents. Additionally, his tendency to rely on his athleticism can sometimes lead to positional lapses when facing teams with quick transitions.
Owen Dodgson is best suited to teams that prioritize width and flexibility in their tactical setup. His ability to operate as both a left-back and a left midfielder makes him an asset in formations like a
4-2-3-1 or 3-5-2, where overlapping runs and wide support are essential. In possession-heavy systems, Dodgson's forward runs and crossing ability can provide attacking width, while his defensive discipline allows him to contribute to transitions and recovery. He fits particularly well in teams that utilize full-backs to stretch the pitch and create space for central players or that require wide players to press high and recover quickly during turnovers
It feels like the season was built up for three at the back but the evolution of wingers has appeared through the season with Revell mentioning a couple of times about how much he loved width and crosses into the box. Whilst Elliot List and Jordan Roberts have done well, their production levels have not been fantastic and their hasn't been natural rotation due to Jake Youngs struggles to settle and Nick Freeman only comfortable on the right a strong option could really aid rotation and help the team
- Productive in the final third, incredibly pro-active, Wants to isolate the full back or run inside the second they get the ball
- Athletically capable and willing to commit to the press, win the ball high and track back when necessary
- Able to stretch the game and get a cross in but still equally confident switching with the ten and striker in game
6 ft 0 - 19 years old - England - Luton, Woking, Grimsby
In terms of style, Luker is a dynamic midfielder who can operate effectively in central or wide positions. His vision and passing range enable him to create opportunities for teammates, while his dribbling skills allow him to navigate through tight spaces.
Defensively, he is diligent in tracking back and applying pressure, contributing to his team's overall solidity. Luker's versatility makes him a valuable asset for managers seeking a multifaceted player capable of adapting to various tactical demands.
His composure on the ball facilitates smooth transitions and distribution as an outlet for his teams we have seen in his current loan out at Grimsby Town
Jayden Luker’s primary weaknesses lie in his consistency and decision-making in high-pressure situations. While he has shown promise as a dynamic midfielder, he occasionally struggles with maintaining composure during transitions, which can lead to misplaced passes or over-committing defensively. Additionally, Luker’s physical presence, though solid for his age, can sometimes fall against more experienced and physically dominant opponents. Addressing these areas through focused coaching and regular first-team exposure will be crucial for him to unlock his full potential.
Luker is best suited to teams that value midfield versatility and a balance between defensive discipline and forward progression. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively makes him a good fit for box-to-box roles in systems like a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, where he can use his energy and work rate to cover ground and support transitions.
5 ft 08- 19 years old - England/Phillipines/Scotland - Watford, Waterford, Fleetwood
and style
Phoenix Patterson is a versatile forward who has lots of agility, technical proficiency, and creative playmaking abilities. He combines a low center of gravity with quick acceleration, enabling him to navigate through tight defenses effectively.
Patterson's dribbling skills and close ball control make him a constant threat in one-on-one situations, while his vision allows him to execute precise passes and create scoring opportunities for his teammates.
His versatility enables him to operate across various attacking positions, adding depth and flexibility
Despite his technical ability and creative flair, his relatively slight frame can make it difficult for him to compete effectively in physical duels, particularly against more robust defenders. This limitation can occasionally reduce his impact in tightly contested matches or when playing against high-pressing teams. Additionally, while his goal-scoring record is impressive, he can sometimes lack consistency in delivering end product against stronger opposition. He would also cost a far bit.
Patterson’s style makes him a valuable asset for teams seeking a dynamic and adaptable forward capable of influencing the game in multiple facets. His agility and close ball control make him a natural fit for systems like a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, where he can operate as an inverted winger cutting inside from the flanks or as a central attacking midfielder orchestrating play in the final third. His ability to take on defenders and create chances aligns well with teams focused on possession-based or high-pressing styles that emphasize quick transitions and exploiting spaces between the lines.
Kyle McAllister is a versatile Scottish footballer, capable of playing both as a midfielder and forward, currently with Forest Green. Renowned for his exceptional dribbling skills, quick acceleration, and ability to navigate through tight defenses, he is a constant threat in one-on-one situations.
McAllister is a significant contributor of goals and assists across various roles, making him an indispensable asset in attacking setups. His experience across different leagues and competitions has equipped him with a well-rounded skill set, adaptable to diverse tactical demands.
McAllister’s primary weaknesses center around consistency and physicality. While his technical ability is undeniable, he can struggle to maintain his impact across a full match or over a series of games, which sometimes limits his overall effectiveness. His relatively slight build can also make it challenging for him to compete against more physical opponents, especially in high-intensity situations.
McAllister thrives in scenarios that allow him to isolate defenders in one-on-one situations and provide creativity in tight spaces. While not ideal for highly physical or defensively rigid teams, his attacking flair, versatility, and ability to create goal-scoring opportunities make him a key player for sides that prioritize dynamic and unpredictable offensive strategies. With proper support in defensive transitions, McAllister could excel in teams that encourage creative expression and quick ball progression.

and style
Jack Stevens is a dynamic versatile forward who carries bundles of pace, agility, and clinical finishing. His ability to make intelligent runs behind defenses and his composure in front of goal make him a constant threat in attacking situations.
Stevens is also adept at linking up play, showcasing good vision and passing accuracy to regularly assist teammates.
His skill set complements possession-based systems that rely on technical proficiency and off-the-ball movement, as well as sides that attack with a high intensity where his pace and dribbling can exploit spaces in transition.
A big area for improvement is finding a way to compete aerial duels. He needs to find new ways to use his body he can't be outfought in duels as easily as he can be guilty of. Additionally, while his defensive contributions are commendable, increasing his work rate off the ball and positions he takes up could further benefit a more coherent pressing strategy.
Stevens thrives in systems that employ a high press and quick transitions and in a formation that enjoys width. . His pace and pressing ability make him well-suited for counter-attacking play, where he can exploit spaces left by opposing defenses. He can perform as a central striker or an attacking midfielder but for me is more of a left winger, given the freedom to attack spaces
6ft 0 - 19 years old - England/Montserrat - Chelsea
Zain Silcott-Duberry is an adaptable forward with impressive dribbling skills and quick footwork, making him a big talent in Chelsea's youth academy. His speed and agility help him break through tight defenses and create scoring chances
He is a constant danger in one-on-one situations and possesses the vision to deliver accurate crosses and passes, enhancing his team's offense
He uses his frame superby to support his natural pace to progress the ball up the pitch for his team. We have seen this from both flanks and at both wing back and as a winger
Zain Silcott-Duberry’s weaknesses are relatively tied to his development and adaptation to higher levels of competition. While he excels in dribbling and creating opportunities, his final product—particularly in terms of his finishing and decision-making in the final third—could benefit from improvement. At times, he can be inconsistent with his end deliveries but nothing that isn’t completely natural given his age and profile
Fit
In a system that values fluid, attacking play. His strengths in dribbling and quick decision-making make him well-suited to teams that emphasize wide play and fast transition. Operating as a winger, he can exploit spaces behind full-backs and link up play with central attackers. His creativity and flair lend themselves well to high-possession teams that rely on quick, incisive passing and movement to break down defensive lines. However, his ability to track back and contribute defensively might require some development in systems that demand more defensive responsibilities.
Not to go all analytical but Stevenage have lacked goals this season. Not all the strikers fault of course. Jamie Reid is being asked to do a very different job, missed pre season and a drop off was natural. Louis Appere has been injured, Tyreece Simpson not hit the ground running and offers a different profile. A new striker to help the rotation is logical.
- A strong finisher especially from cutback and crosses, wants the ball between the posts. A strong instinctive finisher. Not expecting a gleaming goal record but something to work off
- Athletically capable and willing to commit to the press, win the ball high and track back when necessary. Excellent in duels and uses their frame to do so
- Happy to enter wide areas and work in tandem with those in wide areas. Fairly comfortable dribbling and progressing the ball if received back to goal
6 ft 1 - 21 year old - Republic Of Ireland - Sligo Rovers, Celtic, Queens Park, Shamrock Rovers
Johnny Kenny is a dynamic and mobile striker whose best qualities include his ability to get into goal-scoring positions and make intelligent runs behind defensive lines. His pace and agility make him a significant threat in counter-attacking situations, and he thrives in spaces where he can use his speed to exploit opposition defenses.
Kenny's technical ability, combined with his quick thinking, allows him to finish chances efficiently and a lot of them, whether through precise shots or quick reactions in the box.
His work rate off the ball is also notable, as he constantly looks to press defenders and create turnovers, contributing to his team’s overall intensity.
Kenny perhaps does not bring the physical qualities sides would look for in terms of pace and power in their running therefore sides will have to get more comfortable in allowing him to drop into spaces that naturally attacking midfielders would do
Johnny Kenny’s tactical fit is ideal for a high-intensity, pressing system that focuses on quick transitions and attacking with pace. His ability to make intelligent runs behind the opposition's defense and stretch their backline makes him a constant threat. He thrives in systems that encourage high pressing, where his work rate and ability to win the ball back can disrupt the opposition’s play. In counter-attacking scenarios, his speed becomes a crucial asset, allowing his team to exploit defensive gaps quickly and efficiently. Kenny's off-the-ball movement and relentless work ethic make him a key asset in fast, fluid attacking styles.
5ft 9 - 19 years old - England - Stoke, MK Dons
Emre Tezgal is a dynamic forward main strength is his exceptional dribbling and close control, allowing him to glide past defenders and be a constant threat in tight spaces. His intelligent off-the-ball movement and well-timed runs enable him to get into dangerous goal-scoring positions, making him a versatile attacking option capable of playing both centrally and in wide areas
Tezgel's agility and quick footwork allow him to maneuver in tight spaces, making him a threat in and around the box usually working off the toes of any defender
As a developing player, Tezgel may benefit from gaining more experience in high-pressure match situations to enhance his decision-making under stress. Additionally, improving his physicality could help him compete more effectively against stronger defenders
Fit
Tezgel is well-suited to play in formations that emphasize fluid attacking play. His versatility allows him to operate as a central striker or as a wide forward, providing tactical flexibility. He thrives in systems that encourage quick passing and movement, allowing him to exploit spaces and create goal-scoring opportunities from either breaking a high line or from sharp movement from a cross. His ability to make intelligent runs, link up play, and exploit spaces in tight defenses makes him well-suited for teams that value versatility and quick, dynamic offensive movements.
5ft 8 - 23 years old - Portugal - Rochdale, Curzon Ashton, Coventry City
Fabio Tavares is a dynamic and physically strong forward who posses a skill for incredibly powerful running and ability to hold off defenders.
His pace and strength make him a constant threat in one-on-one situations, allowing him to break through defensive lines with ease. Tavares is also adept at linking up play, often dropping deeper to bring teammates into the attack with his vision and passing range.
His clinical finishing ability, combined with his work rate off the ball, makes him a well-rounded forward who contributes both in build-up play and in front of goal.
Fabio Tavares’ is ability to link up play under pressure or in more compact spaces can be inconsistent, sometimes leading to misplaced passes, a lack of precision or a failure to execute key actions when required
Fabio Tavares’ tactical fit is well-suited for a direct, high-pressing system that values physicality and speed. His strength and pace make him ideal for teams that look to exploit spaces on the counter-attack, as he can quickly break through defensive lines and create goal-scoring opportunities. Tavares’ ability to link up play and hold off defenders also makes him a good fit for systems that require forwards to drop deep and engage in build-up play, while his work rate off the ball aligns with high pressing tactics. His adaptability allows him to play in both central and wide attacking roles, contributing to a dynamic and versatile attacking setup.
5ft 10 - 21 years old - England - Woking, Chelsea, Leyton Orient, Reading
Jayden Wareham is a well-rounded forward who has hugely quick feet, technical ability, and intelligent movement off the ball.
He is effective in tight spaces, using his close control to navigate through defenses and create goal-scoring opportunities. Wareham’s versatility allows him to play both as a central striker and in wider positions, where he can stretch the opposition and link up play. His strong finishing ability and composed nature in front of goal make him a consistent threat in the box, while his creativity enables him to provide assists and set up teammates.
One area of improvement for Wareham is his physicality, as he can sometimes struggle when faced with more robust defenders. His ability to hold off challenges or assert himself in aerial duels can be inconsistent, which may limit his effectiveness in more physical contests. Additionally, while his creativity is a strength, his decision-making in certain situations can be improved, particularly when under pressure, leading to occasional lapses in execution during key moments. But this is all able to be coached if given the right environment
Fit
He is able to adapt to various tactical setups, whether as a central striker or a wide attacker. Wareham thrives in setups that focus on quick, intricate passing and creating space, as his movement off the ball and technical ability enable him to link play effectively and get into dangerous areas. He would also excel in teams that value pressing and high work rates, contributing defensively while making intelligent runs to break down opposition defenses.
5ft 10 - 20 years old - England - Lincoln, Gainsborough Trinity, Drogheda United, Walsall
and style
Freddie Draper is a physically robust and powerful striker with exceptional aerial ability and presence in the box. He is particularly dangerous in direct attacking play, using his strength to hold off defenders and win aerial duels, making him a key asset for crosses and set-pieces.
Draper is very much capable of converting numerous chances with both feet and his head scoring a variety of different goals both out on loan and at Lincoln
His work rate and ability to press defenders off the ball make him a constant threat, and he is effective in physical duels, often getting the better of defenders in one-on-one situations.
While Draper’s physicality is a strength, he can sometimes struggle with his technical finesse, particularly in tight spaces or when required to create his own chances. His dribbling and ability to maneuver through compact defenses can be inconsistent, and he may occasionally lack the agility needed to break away from quicker, more nimble defenders.
Draper is best suited to a direct, target-man role where his physicality can be fully utilized, particularly in systems that rely on aerial duels and wide crosses into the box. His strengths as an aerial threat and hold-up player make him a good fit for teams that use long balls, direct play, or prioritize set-pieces. Draper’s ability to press defenders and compete physically also makes him an ideal fit for high-pressing teams, where his work rate and strength can disrupt the opposition’s defense. He would thrive in setups that allow him to play centrally, occupying defenders and creating space for wingers or attacking midfielders to exploit.
Louis Thompson is a freak, a bloody good one at that. An absolute unicorn in the way he plays. There has been a significant gap whenever he is missing whether it be due to suspension or an injury. Because he is such a freak i think it is nearly impossible to replace so anyone with a fair amount of his qualities would be a huge benefit. Eli King may be able to do this but we are yet to see that come to fruition. So if they do choose to replace the profile they would look to replicate in some way would be…
● A dynamic and combative midfielder with excellent work rate and defensive capabilities
● Excels at breaking up opposition attacks, winning duels, and distributing the ball effectively to transition play
● With strong technical ability and a keen understanding of space, adept at dictating the tempo from deep positions, providing balance in midfield, and contributing both defensively and offensively.
● High energy and resilience make him a key presence in central areas, ensuring his team remains stable while pushing forward when needed
6 ft 0 - 21 year old - England/Scotland - Tottenham, Doncaster, Burnley
Matthew Craig is a composed and technically gifted central midfielder with excellent passing range and vision. He excels at dictating the tempo of the game, linking defense and attack with precision. Craig’s ability to read the game allows him to intercept passes and recover possession effectively, while his vision enables him to make key passes and create chances from deep positions. His tactical awareness and decision-making in midfield make him a reliable and creative presence.
One of Craig’s weaknesses is his physicality; he can sometimes struggle against more aggressive or powerful midfielders, especially in duels or aerial contests. Additionally, while his passing is excellent, there are moments when his decision-making under pressure can be inconsistent, leading to misplaced passes or unnecessary turnovers. He also needs to improve his shooting and threat in advanced positions when he makes a burst to become a more complete midfielder.
Matthew Craig fits well in possession-based systems that focus on ball retention and building play from the back. His passing range and ability to control the tempo make him an ideal deep-lying playmaker or box-to-box midfielder in teams that focus on controlling the game through midfield. He would thrive in systems that emphasize fluid passing, transitions, and linking up with attacking players. Craig’s ability to read the game also makes him suited for defensive roles in transition or systems that use a double pivot.
5ft 5 - 21 years old - England - Rochdale, Spennymoor Town, Brentford B
Ethan Brierley is a dynamic central midfielder who has admirers aplenty especially for his tireless work rate and box-to-box style of play.
His ability to break up opposition attacks with timely interceptions, combined with his energy to drive forward, makes him an influential figure in both defensive and attacking phases. Brierley is also comfortable on the ball, able to carry it through midfield and link play with intelligent passing. His versatility allows him to perform well in various midfield roles, whether as a holding midfielder or in a more advanced position
Brierley’s weaknesses lie is his consistency in maintaining control under pressure. At times, his desire to drive forward can leave him exposed in defensive positions, and his technical ability can sometimes suffer in tight spaces. He may also lack the final product in the final third, with his passing and decision-making in attacking situations needing refinement to be more effective.
Brierley is well-suited to a high-pressing, energetic team that focuses on winning the ball back quickly and transitioning rapidly from defense to attack. His work rate and ability to cover large areas of the pitch make him an ideal fit for systems that require midfielders to contribute both defensively and offensively. He could thrive in a box-to-box role, where his energy, movement, and ability to drive forward would be key to linking play and contributing to offensive transitions.
6ft 0 - 27 years old - England - Coventry, Wolves, Colchester, Jumilla, Forest Green Rovers, Portsmouth
Ben Stevenson is a composed midfielder with a high football IQ, best at controlling the tempo of the game with his intelligent passing and vision. His calmness under pressure and his ability to distribute the ball accurately make him a crucial figure in the middle of the park. Stevenson also excels in defensive midfield roles, where his positional awareness and tackling ability help him break up opposition attacks. His versatility allows him to adapt to different roles within midfield, whether as a deep-lying playmaker or as a more defensive option.
Stevenson’s main weaknesses is his mobility. While he is technically sound, his lack of pace and acceleration can sometimes hinder his ability to close down space quickly or track runners as effectively as other midfielders in his position
Ben Stevenson is best suited to a team that prioritizes ball retention, control, and tactical discipline in midfield. His calmness and passing ability make him ideal for systems that emphasize possession-based football, where he can help dictate play and recover the ball for transitions. He would also fit well in defensive midfield roles where he can disrupt opposition play and maintain stability in the team’s defensive shape. Stevenson’s positional awareness and ability to read the game allow him to play in deeper roles that require pure tactical discipline and defensive contributions.

Noah Kenneh is an athletic and combative midfielder who carries strong levels of physicality, strength, and ability to win tackles in midfield. His aggressive playing style and work rate allow him to break up opposition attacks and dominate in duels.
Kenneh is also a strong ball carrier, able to drive forward from midfield with pace and power. His ability to cover large areas of the pitch and contribute defensively makes him a key presence in the center of the park, where he can provide protection to his defense while offering support to the attack.
Kenneh’s weaknesses lie in his technical ability and composure on the ball. While he is strong and energetic, his passing can sometimes be erratic, and he may struggle with more technical midfielders in tight situations. His decision-making can also be inconsistent, especially when trying to release the ball under pressure or when deciding whether to pass or carry.
Kenneh is well-suited for teams that rely on a high-pressing, physical style of play. His ability to win tackles, disrupt the opposition, and cover ground quickly makes him ideal for teams that play with intensity and need a midfielder who can win the ball back quickly. He would thrive in a more defensive or box-to-box role, where his physicality and work rate could be fully utilized. Kenneh’s ability to drive forward with the ball also makes him a valuable asset for systems that focus on quick transitions from defense to attack.
Jamie McDonnell is a technically gifted midfielder known for his ability to pick out key passes and dictate the tempo of play.
He is calm and composed on the ball, with a strong passing range that allows him to create opportunities from deep positions. McDonnell is also good at making well-timed runs into the box and contributing to the attacking play.
His football intelligence and vision help him to control the midfield and link play effectively, making him a key figure in build-up play.
McDonnell’s main weaknesses are his physicality and pace, which can hinder his ability to compete in more physical battles or break away from quicker opposition. While he is technically proficient, his defensive contributions can sometimes be inconsistent, especially in duels or tracking runners. McDonnell may also struggle when facing high-pressing teams that force him into quick decisions or disrupt his passing rhythm.
Jamie McDonnell fits well into possession-based systems that focus on controlling the midfield and dictating the tempo of the game. His vision and passing ability make him an ideal candidate for teams that look to dominate possession and build from the back. He would thrive in midfield roles where his creativity and ability to link play can be maximized, though he would need to be part of a midfield setup that provides defensive support given his lack of physicality.
I wanted to pick an edgy, bargain, low risk, potentially high reward project player that you would not have heard of as its an approach id be interested in us to start taking so please allow me to present….

Ciaran Behan is a highly technical midfielder who has exceptional levels of vision and creativity for someone in those leagues, making him a key player in orchestrating play.
His ability to deliver precise passes allows him to be a central figure in the offensive strategies at University College Dublin (UCD). Behan's versatility further enhances his value, as he is capable of adapting to various wide roles, seamlessly contributing both defensively and offensively. This balance between creativity and adaptability makes him a reliable presence in the midfield, capable of influencing the game in a variety of situations.
He has an exceptional ability to win fouls and quickly advance his team up the pitch, almost freakishly so at the numbers he produces.
Behan tends to be predictable when forced down the line, often relying on a weak pass or cut-back into the box. He is also fairly one-footed, and needs to find a way to either mask this tendency or adjust his play so that full-backs won’t just anticipate his left-footed crosses.
Behan’s tactical fit would be ideal in a possession-based system where midfielders are expected to link up play and dictate the tempo. His strong vision and passing ability make him well-suited for attacking roles in those sort of teams, particularly in formations that embrace width . Behan’s creativity and technical skills allow him to orchestrate offensive movements and contribute to building attacks from deep. so a system that values quick transitions and pressing in midfield could also suit him, provided there’s support from other players in defensive roles.
