DETROIT RED WINGS Team History

HISTORY BEHIND THE NAME Detroit joined the NHL for the 1926-27 season and was known as the Cougars. After an unsuccessful four years of play, coach Jack Adams thought a name change might help spur a winning season. The name was changed to the Falcons beginning with the 1930-31 season. When James Norris, Sr. purchased the hockey franchise in 1932, he changed the name a third time to the Red Wings. Red was a part of the name because the existing uniforms were red and white.

TEAM COLORS Little is known about why red and white were chosen for the team’s color back in 1926. However, red is an emotionally charged color, demonstrating passion, strength, energy, fire and excitement. And initially, the sport of ice hockey, with roots dating back to the mid1880s, was played outdoors surrounded by snow, thus the color white. The colors of red and white do indeed seem fitting for an energetic hockey team that provides so much excitement to its fans.

THE LOGO After James Norris, Sr. changed the name from the Falcons to the Red Wings, he searched for a new logo. He was reminded of the logo worn by the Montreal Winged Wheelers – an amateur hockey team he had played for years before as member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. That logo’s wheeled center seemed quite appropriate for Detroit, a city that had put the world on wheels, and the wing would denote speed as the players soared around the rink in smooth flight.

EVOLUTION OF THE LOGO The original Red Wings logo was rather crude, but it has been refined over the years. When Mike and Marian Ilitch purchased the team in 1982, they enlarged the logo on the game jerseys to demonstrate the pride they felt for the hockey team and the franchise’s long and rich history.

HOCKEY HEIR Bloodline made game a NATURAL for Patrick Eaves BY Christy Hammond

Y

ou have probably heard of the Sutters or Staals as they have various family members that are well known for either coaching or playing in the NHL. There is another family – the Eaves family – that has made quite a mark in the college hockey world, spanning three generations with their youngest, Patrick, joining the Red Wings this season. Eaves’ grandfather, Cecil, attended the University of Denver on an athletic scholarship, winning the NCAA hockey championship in 1957. He retired from a lengthy collegiate coaching career at Ohio State and Windsor. His two boys, Mike and Murray, were at the rink every day growing up in a hockey environment.

HOCKEY HEIR Mike Eaves, Patrick’s dad, spent four years at the University of Wisconsin where he led the Badgers to a national championship in 1977. Upon graduating, he played a total of 324 NHL games before he turned to coaching. He has coached at Wisconsin over the last seven seasons, winning the NCAA title in 2006. Patrick grew-up in Minnesota, spending his free time at the hockey rink. He played at legendary Shattuck St. Mary’s from the sixth grade through his sophomore year. His father fondly remembers the enjoyment Patrick and his brother, Ben, had living in a run-down cabin just 100 yards from the rink, which helped give the Eaves boys a head start over their hockey playing peers.

“It was a dream come true living that close to a rink,” Patrick said. “We had the key to the rink so we could go whenever we wanted and then we found ways in even when we didn’t have the keys.” Patrick moved to Ann Arbor, Mich., before his junior year of high school to play for the U.S. National Team Development Program for two years. His father coached him during those seasons, winning gold at the 2002 IIHF World Under-18 Championship in Slovakia. Two years later, his dad also coached him at the 2004 World Junior Championship, helping the U.S. win its first ever WJC title. Mike always tried to avoid coaching his sons because it could make for a difficult situation. To ensure that it didn’t get awk-

ward, the pair set some ground rules. “The assistant coach would talk to him about what needed to be done,” Mike explained, “but I also said that there would be a handful of times during the course of the year that I would hold him accountable in front of the team so that his teammates knew that he wasn’t off limits.” When it came time for Patrick to decide whether he wanted to take the professional junior league route or head to college, there was no doubt in his mind. He followed his older brother, Ben, who won a national title in 2001 as captain at Boston College. “We’re pretty much best friends,” Ben said. “We talk almost every day. If one of us needs the other one then he’s the first guy there to pick him up.” Patrick turned pro after his junior year, 10

eventually making his way to the NHL as a forward with the Ottawa Senators. He scored 20 goals in his rookie season before a trade sent him to Carolina during his third season. While Patrick was on his honeymoon this summer, the Hurricanes traded him to Boston, who then bought him out to make room under the salary cap, leaving Patrick as an unrestricted free agent. “I think it’s a terrific opportunity for him,” said Cecil Eaves of his grandson. “There’s enough talent there that if he permits himself to develop as the player that he can be, the opportunity is just endless.” Outside of the obvious benefits of signing with the Wings, Patrick will also be able to have coffee and catch up with his grandfather, who lives across the river in Windsor.

UPDATE Michigan junior center Louie Caporusso is a preseason first-team All-CCHA selection and a Hobey Baker Award candidate.

CCHA Points in New Direction The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) opened this season with a new point system in place: a regulation time or overtime victory will now be worth three points in the league standings, while a shootout win is worth two points and a loss in a shootout earns a team a point. “We feel that this is a fairer system,” said CCHA Commissioner Tom Anastos. “Now, all teams will have access to the same number of points throughout the regular season and every game is worth three points whether it is decided in regulation time, overtime or a shootout. “We also feel this will give teams an added incentive to win a game in regulation time or overtime because they will gain the maximum number of points for doing so.” This season any game that goes to a shootout will see the victor credited with a tie and a shootout win in the conference standings, while the loser will receive credit for a tie.

This differs from the system utilized in 2008-09, where a regulation/overtime victory and a shootout win meant two points, a shootout loss gave a team one point, and a regulation/overtime loss was awarded no points. However, like last year, CCHA league games that are decided in a shootout will go down as a tie in the overall national rankings and have no bearing on a team’s Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) come NCAA Tournament time. Additionally, a shootout will again not be used to decide games during the CCHA Tournament, with the exception of the thirdplace game at Joe Louis Arena. Last season, the shootout proved to be both exciting for the fans and pivotal in the CCHA standings. “I think it’s a good move for our league because we are playing with the shootout and I think it is fair,” said Michigan coach Red Berenson.

Ken Holland will proudly serve as chairman of the 2009 Red Kettle campaign that includes four Red Kettle Nights at Red Wings’ home games, and a rematch of Holland and coach Mike Babcock’s competition with Red Wings’ players in a head-to-head Red Kettle contest. Coaches and players will be in their own communities on Tuesday, December 8 in a challenge to see who can raise the most money for the cause. Visit DetroitRedWings. com for dates and locations.

Annual Toast of Hockeytown The Detroit Red Wings Foundation will host its 10th annual Toast of Hockeytown wine tasting benefit on Tuesday, December 15, from 6-9 p.m. EST at Joe Louis Arena. Guests will have the opportunity to mingle with the

entire Red Wings’ team while sampling over 75 wines and enjoying live entertainment, a strolling buffet, and a great live and silent auction. A limited amount of tickets are now available at $200 per person. To purchase your tickets today, please call 313-396-7575 or visit DetroitRedWings.com.

Just Win, Baby! Howard understands his role with Red Wings By Michael Caples

T

his season Red Wings management will have their eyes fixed on the ‘other guy’ between the pipes. The Red Wings hope that rookie goalie Jimmy Howard can fill the role of back-up as successfully as Ty Conklin did last season. The 25-year-old Howard, the Wings’ second-round pick in 2003, came to Detroit with high expectations. After a standout career at the University of Maine, he spent four years cutting his teeth in Grand Rapids. Now, in the final season of his contract, Howard can call Detroit home. He has a permanent – as permanent as permanent can be – locker stall next to Osgood, and he won’t be taking cab rides across the state. The young goaltender is enjoying his newfound stability. “It feels good,” Howard said. “It’s been a long time coming, sort of. A lot of hard work has been put into this, and it feels good to finally get a legit chance.”

JUST WIN, BABY!

Yet the opportunity won’t last forever, and Howard knows it. Prior to this season, the young goaltender had played in nine NHL games over three seasons with a 1-5 record. When asked if he feels like this season is the makeor-break year, he said it is always that way for a professional athlete. “I think every season is pretty much make it or break it nowadays,” he said. “There’s always somebody gunning for your spot and there’s always someone that wants your position, so you always have to put in the hours too – once you earn your spot – to be able to keep it.” Howard’s teammates expect that he will successfully fill the back-up role. 52

“I think Jimmy has been improving every year,” captain Nicklas Lidstrom said. “He seems to be coming to camp in better and better shape, and I think he’s ready to take the next step, ready to step in and be an NHL goalie. He’s got a lot of time in the minors, so I think we all expect him to make that next step now.” The man he is splitting time with between the pipes, three-time Stanley Cup champion Osgood, said that he has noticed improvements in Howard’s game. “Every year in the AHL he got better and better, and you could tell that his game was becoming more complete,”

JUST WIN, BABY!

Osgood said. “He was always athletic, but now he’s solider, he’s more tight out there, a lot of pucks don’t go through him like they used to. “Now that he’s here, once he starts playing, he’ll be fine. He’s definitely ready, there’s no doubt in anybody’s mind. It’s just a matter of him getting comfortable and getting acclimated and getting used to the NHL more then he has before.” The Syracuse, N.Y. native is taking advantage of his practice time with the likes of Osgood and Lidstrom. “I’m feeling pretty good,” Howard

said. “I’m continuing to learn here every single day, just get better and just watch the guys and continue to learn how they prepare themselves everyday. Just when I’m called upon, just go out and perform.” Howard knows that for him to have success in Hockeytown, it really comes down to one thing: “It’s just winning,” he said. “Winning hockey games. That’s what they expect out of me, that’s what they want me to do. I have to take that upon myself, to go out there and take a lot of pride in it … and win.” RED WINGS TODAY

alumni FORMER RED WINGS CENTER

RON DUGUAY

reunion a Q&A with

Ron Duguay By Christy Hammond

Do you keep in touch with any of your former Red Wings teammates? If so, who? I don’t stay in touch on a regular basis. It’s just whenever I run into them and I’m going to be spending a lot of time with Bobby Probert and the reason is him and I are doing a reality show – “Battle of the Blades.” Which of the current Red Wings is your favorite? And why? I’m just trying to think – you pick one and then you leave some out. I can’t just name one – it was a handful of guys that I appreciated and enjoyed their friendship. That would be Steve Yzerman, Reed Larson, and John Ogrodnick. What was your favorite memory as a Red Wing? I enjoyed that whole experience of just playing on a really good line with Steve Yzerman and John Ogrodnick. We were one of the top lines in the NHL so I really enjoyed my time there for two years, playing with those two guys. Which of the guys you played with was the toughest? Physically? Joey Kocur and Bob Probert and Teddy Nolan. It was a physical toughness and a mental toughness – the willingness to not back down and not be afraid. Who was the funniest? Barry Melrose. Just his sense of humor. You’ve seen what he’s doing in his work. He’s always making some sort of little funny remark about something and laughs at his own jokes. Who had the biggest heart? [In terms of competing] That would probably be Danny Gare, our captain. For a little man, he played like a real big guy. What was your favorite restaurant in metro Detroit? I don’t remember. It’s been a long time.

How has the NHL changed since you played? It’s a lot less physical, a lot less intimidation going on. It’s more European hockey versus North American hockey. Toughest team (other than the Red Wings) when you played? Boy, we had the toughest team. I think it probably would still be the Philadelphia Flyers. Who’d you sit next to in the dressing room? I don’t remember. I’m assuming it was Johnny O., but I don’t remember that. We sat pretty close as a line – myself, Stevie, and Johnny O. – we sat pretty close together. What do you love most about the game? Well, I get an opportunity to do what I love to do when I do the best as an athlete and that’s playing hockey. Just an opportunity to play hockey plus I get to do it in front of an audience that appreciates you. I love getting a response out of just playing, scoring a goal. I love that interaction between me and the fans and me and my teammates. Who had the greatest influence on your career? Probably watching Bobby Orr because of his style and how he dominated and how he controlled the puck. I really enjoyed how he would go make these end-to-end rushes. He just stood out more than anyone else. I loved his skating style. I loved how smooth he was. What advise would you give to kids playing today? It’s something that I go through with my son now. If you are serious about wanting to be a hockey player at a high level, you’ve got to put the time in to getting bigger, stronger, and faster. A lot of that is sacrifices that you make in the summer time: doing extra, training a little harder, doing your pushups, doing your sit-ups. There are so many kids who want to do that same thing that you’ve got to find a way to get an edge on your opponent.
