DETROIT RED WINGS TEAM HISTORY

HISTORY BEHIND THE NAME Detroit joined the NHL for the 1926-27 season and was known as the Cougars. After an unsuccessful four years of play, coach Jack Adams thought a name change might help spur a winning season. The name was changed to the Falcons beginning with the 1930-31 season. When James Norris, Sr. purchased the hockey franchise in 1932, he changed the name a third time to the Red Wings. Red was a part of the name because the existing uniforms were red and white.

TEAM COLORS Little is known about why red and white were chosen for the team’s colors back in 1926. However, red is an emotionally charged color, demonstrating passion, strength, energy, fire and excitement. And initially, the sport of ice hockey, with roots dating back to the mid-1880s, was played outdoors surrounded by snow, thus the color white. The colors of red and white do indeed seem fitting for an energetic hockey team that provides so much excitement to its fans.

THE LOGO After James Norris, Sr. changed the name from the Falcons to the Red Wings, he searched for a new logo. He was reminded of the logo worn by the Montreal Winged Wheelers – an amateur hockey team he had played for years before as member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association. That logo’s wheeled center seemed quite appropriate for Detroit, a city that had put the world on wheels, and the wing would denote speed as the players soared around the rink in smooth flight.

EVOLUTION OF THE LOGO The original Red Wings logo was rather crude, but it has been refined over the years. When Mike and Marian Ilitch purchased the team in 1982, they enlarged the logo on the game jerseys to demonstrate the pride they felt for the hockey team and the franchise’s long and rich history.

THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE

HALL OF FAME CREDENTIALS: While his detractors say that Osgood’s success is a product of being part of championship-caliber teams, Red Wings general manager Ken Holland insists that Osgood’s 400 wins is the final statement for a hall-of-fame resume.

W

hat makes a hall-of-fame goaltender? Red Wings fans and critics alike have debated this for years, as they try to decide what to make of Chris Osgood’s career. Some people praise the Wings’ veteran for his on-ice success. Others question his place in hockey history. Osgood has faced his share of critics during his 17 NHL seasons, despite three Stanley Cup rings. His detractors say that Osgood’s success is a product not of his abilities, but the abilities of those skating 8

in front of him. But according to Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, Osgood’s 400-plus career wins is the final statement on a hall-of-fame resume. “The game’s been around 90-95 years, and 10 people have won 400 games,” Holland said. “People that feel he shouldn’t be in always bring up that he’s been on a good team, the nine goalies above him, they’ve all been on good teams too. To think you’re going to win 400 games in the NHL on a bad team, people don’t understand how good the

NO QUESTION: Despite being a 3-time Stanley Cup Champion, Vezina Trophy finalist, and NHL All-Star selection – members of the hockey community still question Osgood’s place among the top goaltenders in NHL history.

league is. He’s done something that only nine other people in almost 100 years have accomplished.” Osgood’s career milestones mirror or even surpass the 31 goaltenders already inducted into hockey’s shrine in the heart of downtown Toronto. Osgood’s three Stanley Cup championships are more than 19 of the current hall-of-famers. His 74 playoff wins are only topped by four inducted goalies. And Martin Brodeur, who more than likely will be a first-ballot hall-of-famer, is the only goaltender in history to reach 400 wins quicker than Osgood. Yet members of the hockey community still question Osgood’s place. Hockey writers and historians Bob Duff and Kevin Allen were criticized for placing Osgood among the top 50 goaltenders

in 2002, despite Osgood already having two Stanley Cups, a Vezina Trophy finalist selection, and an All-Star selection. Duff compared Osgood’s situation to that of Ken Dryden, who had nine hall-of-famers playing in front of him in his last season with the Montreal Canadiens. “I think it’s a problem for all goalies who have played behind good teams,” Duff said. “You look at people like Ken Dryden, to this day, there are people who will say that Ken Dryden was the benefactor of playing behind those great Montreal teams. But you still have to stop the puck. I don’t care how great the team is in front of you, you’re going to have to make some saves during the game. It’s funny, if you put Osgood’s numbers and Dryden’s numbers side by side, there’s a real parallel there.” Longtime friend and teammate Kris

THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE

JUST WIN, BABY: Long time friend and teammate Kris Draper says that Osgood’s 400 wins represent what Osgood has strived for since entering the league in 1993. “He didn’t care what the score was, as long as he made one more save than the other goalie.” - Kris Draper

Draper said that Osgood’s 400 wins represents what he has strived for since entering the league in 1993. Osgood has only one losing season, which is something only three current hall-offame goaltenders have achieved. “Really from the start of his career and all the way up to now, just the consistency – all he did, all he talked about, was winning hockey games,” Draper said. “He didn’t care what the score was, as long as he made one more save than the other goalie. That’s something that I think he 12

RED WINGS TODAY

was always proud of, just walking away and getting that win.” When asked what his sales pitch would be to earn hall-of-fame votes for Osgood, assistant general manager Jim Nill said the 400-plus wins say enough. “It’s a results-oriented business,” Nill said. “Results are results, he’s done it. That’s the bottom line. What comes first, the chicken or the egg? People are going to argue that he was on good teams, but goaltenders are a big part of those good teams. He’s been a part of that, and he’s delivered.”

RED WINGS BRING HOLIDAY CHEER TO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF MICHIGAN The Detroit Red Wings made their annual trip to Children’s Hospital of Michigan following a practice in December. After a brief welcome in the Red Wings’ Play Zone located in the hospital’s lobby, the team broke up into groups to visit various wards ranging from oncology to neurology to PICU. The players spent two hours going room-to-room passing out team wall calendars, signing autographs, and posing for pictures with patients and their families. ABOVE: Brad Stuart, Henrik Zetterberg, Brian Rafalski and Drew Miller pose for a picture with a future Red Wings fan. RIGHT: Jiri Hudler, Todd Bertuzzi, Jimmy Howard, Tomas Holmstrom and Darren Helm visit with a patient and her family members during their December visit to Chidren’s Hospital of Michigan.

PLAYERS BEAT BABCOCK AND HOLLAND IN A BELL-RINGING FIRST For the first time in five years, two Red Wings players brought in more money for The Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign in two hours of bell-ringing than coach Mike Babcock and general manager Ken Holland. In total, this year’s competition raised $6,330, which was more than the last two campaign competitions combined. Forwards Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm rang bells at Hockeytown Authentics in Troy in December. Fans lined up around the building to help the players raise nearly $2,900. Babcock and Holland’s red kettle

at Hiller’s Market in downtown Northville totaled nearly $2,400, putting them just $500 short of the total raised by the Wings forwards. Jonathan Ericsson and Drew Miller collected over $1,000 at the Kroger in Plymouth, bringing the grand total to $6,330. This year’s final total was 31 times the amount collected daily for the average red kettle. The Salvation Army also had its famous red kettles at Joe Louis Arena for four games in December, which brought in an additional $2,000 for the campaign. RED WINGS TODAY

GM COrNEr

Q&a WITH GENEral MaNaGEr

KEN HOllaND I knew I wanted to be a GM when… Jimmy Devellano and Neil Smith hired me as a western scout. I thought it was a dream to be a GM, until Neil Smith got the GM job with the New York Rangers and I became the chief scout in Detroit. For relaxation, I… love to compete on the golf course and spend time at our cottage in British Columbia. I can’t live without... the Blackberry. I’m up and at work by…10 a.m. I work 10-6 p.m. on non-game

days, and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on game days; I’m a night owl. I watch NHL games every night until midnight or 1 a.m.

My monthly cell phone bill is… $500 – $750. My favorite player growing up was… Bernie Parent of the Philadelphia Flyers.

The players I most admire in any sport are… Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom.

If I could be a GM in another league, it’d be… Major League Baseball. I love working with numbers and baseball is all about stats. Plus, I played a lot of baseball growing up.

My greatest moment as an athlete was… our playoff run to the Calder Cup finals (in 1982) with Binghamton.

The one former player I’d deal for, no matter the price, is… Bobby Orr or Wayne Gretzky. I can’t decide between the two.

The last vacation I took was to… Bandon Dunes, Oregon, on a golf trip with 15 golf buddies.

My biggest role model in my sport is… Jimmy Devellano and Scotty Bowman.

The best thing about my job is… that I love my job. It’s not work. The worst job I ever had… was one summer in Medicine Hat I worked for an oil company as a day laborer. I would sit on the back of a flatbed truck as we drove along the pipeline picking up great, big rocks. Two or three of us would jump down and pick-up rocks and plop them into the back of the truck.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

IN THE WINGS: Until Brad Stuart’s recent injury, defenseman Jakub Kindl’s main responsibility was to be patient and ready to play when called upon by the Wings coaching staff.

I

n his role as the Red Wings’ seventh defenseman, Jakub Kindl understands that it’s his responsibility to remain vigilant, and spring into action when called upon by the coaching staff. Kindl’s role went into motion shortly after Brad Stuart suffered a broken jaw courtesy of a blind-side hit to the head by Calgary’s Tom Kostopoulos in early-January. “It’s been a bit of a roller-coaster, you know, I started playing when a couple of guys got hurt, so it felt good when you’re playing,” said Kindl, who was pressed into service for 11 games following the season-opener. “Then guys were coming back and it’s been tough. But it’s a process. It’s only my first year, and I have to accept this role as the seventh defenseman, and whenever my chance comes, I have to be ready.” It’s not an easy aspect of a pro hockey player’s life: putting in the hard work – onice practices and off-ice workouts – only to watch the games from a seat in the press box, which can be a real drain. It’s often necessary 54

RED WINGS TODAY

for Kindl to workout on his own, and he stays on the ice following practices where he gets extra work with assistant coach Brad McCrimmon. “You have to do whatever you can just to stay in shape,” said Kindl, who in three-plus seasons with the Griffins had 13 goals and 75 assists in 234 games. “Sometimes we just have morning skates, so you’re only out there for 20-minutes; it’s not like you’re playing in a game when you’re out there the whole time. So it’s tough when you’re used to playing in every situation like I did for the past two and a half years in Grand Rapids.” And it didn’t help that Kindl began the season at a crossroads in his career. The Red Wings couldn’t send him to Grand Rapids without him clearing waivers, which was unlikely to occur – and he had to beat out either Jonathan Ericsson or newcomer Ruslan Salei for a top-six spot. Through mid-January, Kindl, who is the franchise’s highest draft pick (19th overall in 2005) over the last 19 years, had played in 15

HOT COMMODITY: While Kindl’s offensive skills are an added bonus, it’s his defense and ability to move the puck from end to end that make him a valuable commodity in the NHL.

games with a minus-1 rating. And though he was still seeking his first career NHL point, Kindl has all of the offensive skills to make it in the NHL. But it’s his defensive skills that make him a commodity for the Red Wings, who like his skating ability and the way he moves the puck from the back end. Still, the biggest obstacle for Kindl in his first NHL season has been the ebbs and flows of being a healthy scratch more often than not. But there’s nowhere else that the Czechoslovakian would rather be in his life. “You look around, and Detroit has the best team in the world for a long time, right?” Kindl said. “When I look at it that way, it’s like playing soccer in Barcelona. You want to be on the best team, and I’m a part of it, so I’m happy to be here, but my dream is to play for a long time.” Until then, Kindl has found solace in all 56

RED WINGS TODAY

things Czechoslovakian, like the special holiday that he spent with family and friends in metro Detroit. “My girlfriend was here and my brother (Denis) came down from Montreal, where he is playing in the (QMJHL),” Kindl said. “Plus we had Tomas Tatar and Jiri Hudler come down to spend a Czechoslovakian Christmas with us on the 24th.” But Kindl’s ultimate wish is to return to his hometown of Sumperk with the Stanley Cup – again. “My hope is to get a bigger opportunity,” he said. “But it is what it is. I just have to be ready, and go as far as we can and win the Stanley Cup. I want to raise the Cup and take it home again. … When I got called up as a Black Ace I got to take it home, but I never raised it, so it would be extra special this year.”

rEuNION a Q&a WITH

MEl BrIDGMaN By Bill roose Do you keep in touch with any of your former Red Wings teammates? If so, who? We’ve had four kids and the last one just went off to college, so we’ve been so busy out in California. But when you see guys it’s like you just saw them a week ago. Which of the current Red Wings is your favorite? And why? By osmosis, my son who was born here in Detroit is a huge Red Wings fan, so I know that he likes (Pavel) Datsyuk and (Henrik) Zetterberg, (Johan) Franzen and (Nicklas) Lidstrom. Overall, it’s just a great team and a fun team to watch. What was your favorite memory as a Red Wing? I think the playoff runs that we had in the spring of ’87 and ’88. We were very, very close in getting to the Stanley Cup. But it was a very good group of people; we worked very hard together, and it was really an enjoyable time, really. Which of the guys you played with was the toughest? Without a doubt there are two of them – Bob Probert and Joey Kocur. And the nice thing about them is they were both Jekyll and Hyde; on the ice I wouldn’t want to play against them, but off the ice they were just terrific people. Who was the funniest? Glenny Hanlon, without a doubt. And Timmy Higgins. Who had the biggest heart? That’s a tough question, but I think you have to look to your leader, and just the way that Stevie Yzerman carried himself on and off the ice, I mean, as a person and as a player, there aren’t too many who can match-up to him. How has the NHL changed since you played? I think the game has gotten a lot faster and the athletes are bigger, more skilled. The game has taken off. When you’re an older player like I was and you watch the old tapes you’re just thankful that you were born 20 years later, because I wouldn’t have made it. Toughest team (other than the Red Wings) when you played? I was telling my son that the teams here in Detroit, especially the second year, may have even been tougher than the Broad Street Bullies. You don’t get too many

guys like Probert and Kocur as heavyweights. The Flyers had Dave Schultz, but there wasn’t a second guy in that category. What do you love most about the game? When you play at a high level and you’re fortunate to play on a good team you appreciate the skill of the players and the strategy that goes into the game, and the scouting. You realize how much goes into seeing that athlete on the ice. You’re not just seeing a player, but you’re seeing the whole process that goes into see that one player at this level. Who had the greatest infl uence on your career? No doubt my father did at a young age. And a gentleman named Barry Thorndycraft, who was drafted by Montreal and coached at North Dakota for two years. And between the two of them, before I turned pro, they had a tremendous impact on me. At the pro level, I’ve had to say Bobby Clarke. You don’t get to play with too many leaders like that. What advice would you give to kids playing today? The ability to work hard is a talent in and of itself. And when people talk about talent they usually talk about skating and stick-handling skills. But at the end of the day, your ability to work hard is a talent; not everybody has that, and if you have that, I’ll tell you, the people who are watching, coaches, scouts, they really respect that.
