JURIED MEMBER ONLINE EXHIBITION

RED ROCK PASTEL SOCIETY 2025 JURIED MEMBER ONLINE EXHIBITION
The Red Rock Pastel Society of Nevada was founded in 2018 by Dasha Jamison who moved from the Smoky Mountains to the Red Rock Area of Las Vegas, Nevada.
From a small group of pastel enthusiasts Red Rock grew into a vibrant international society that is relentlessly promoting the medium of soft pastel in southern Nevada and beyond.
This is our sixth international exhibition of the Red Rock Pastel Society. As our Pastel society grows we are presenting two distinctive divisions: Masters’ and Open.
This exhibition is one of the most inclusive. We have 143 artists presenting 227 works. This year we have a melting pot of entries again from all over the US and the entire world.
To all courageous, incredibly talented artists who were brave enough to share their pastel artworks with the world.
To my husband, Jeff, and daughter, Laurel Alexandra, who endlessly inspire my journey.

BEST IN SHOW
A landscape that impresses with its freshness and clarity. A winding road leads us directly into the picture, creating a natural invitation to enter. The handling is loose in the foreground and sky, yet precise in the accents just behind the central tree. Echoes of violet across the sky and shadow hold the composition together. The atmosphere is tangible—the light, the season, the sense of day all present. Balanced, lyrical, and complete, this is a work that holds the viewer and rewards return visits.
Florence Penouty Light in March

1st PLACE
A still life with striking presence. The composition is strong, and the color is bold yet controlled. Shapes and strokes are handled with a painter’s confidence, transforming ordinary objects into something monumental. Both abstract and representational, the work stands on the strength of its design and the power of its mark-making.
Marla Baggetta Art Supplies

2nd PLACE
An energetic and confident landscape. The color is bold, the marks assured, and the sense of light immediate. Movement carries through the marsh grasses into the sky, holding the viewer’s attention and capturing the fleeting beauty of the moment.
Tony Allain Morston Marsh

Sergey Pietilä Élisabeth
3rd PLACE
A portrait that immediately commands attention. The subject is captured with intimacy and dignity, the drawing strong and the expression compelling. Sensitive color harmonies and confident handling create a powerful balance of realism and artistry. It is both personal and universal.

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
A striking subject treated with sensitivity. The glow of light and the cat’s quiet strength are captured through confident handling of edges and color. It is a painting that radiates both atmosphere and presence.
Yael Maimon Sunset Sentinel

AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
A celebration of color and energy. The field pulses with yellows that vibrate against complementary tones, while brushwork keeps the scene alive and moving. It is a joyful statement, confidently composed and beautifully executed.
Mike Ishikawa Mustards Alive

Kenneth L. Keith Grand Canyon Late Afternoon
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
A commanding view handled with restraint and power. Light shifts across the canyon walls, and the vastness of space is conveyed through careful value control and atmospheric depth. The work balances grandeur with intimacy, inviting repeated viewing.

Tanya Avchinnikova Judge of Awards for Open Division
@tanyaavchinnikovaart
Tanya Avchinnikova is a pastel artist based in the UK, a member of The Pastel Society and Signature Artist of The Pastel Society of America. Tactile sensation, direct communication with pure pigment, freedom of applying it on surface straight away, are what Avchinnikova a loves about pastel.
Avchinnikova paints seascapes and landscapes, focusing on closeups, as a reflection of her personal wish to be in those beautiful places.
“In my works I try to create the illusion of presence and deep unity with nature. I like to watch how the light travels on water, from wave to wave, how wind creates glare on the grass in a sunny day while moving it. I like to see the traces of ‘invisible’ things, catch them and paint them. “
Tanya is a recipient of multiple International awards including PSA Enduring Brilliance ‘52, McKinley / Robertson Award for the Advancement of Pastel, 2024, New York and Henry Roche Award, Pastel Society, 2025, London. Tanya has several publications in prestigious magazines and exhibits extensively in UK and US.

Julie Freeman Juror
@juliefreemanartist
Julie, a self-taught hyperrealist artist, has refined her skills over the years, specializing in pastels. Her dedication to realism is evident in her work, which has earned her significant recognition. She holds many prestigious titles including Master status with the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS), Master Pastelist with the Pastel Artists of New Zealand (MPANZ) and Australia (MPSA) and she is a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA).
Julie aims to create works that achieve realism beyond the photograph, and when not in her studio, she seeks inspiration from the environment using her own reference images. Her diverse subject matter includes animal and wildlife portraits, coastal and nautical scenes, and native flora and fauna. More recently, she has been exploring still life compositions.
Julie’s artwork has received numerous national and international awards, and her pieces are in private collections in the UK, USA, and New Zealand.

BEST IN SHOW
A complex and multi-layered composition that draws the viewer in. The interplay of abstraction and figuration creates both mystery and clarity, inviting multiple readings. The restrained palette is handled with confidence, giving the work an inner radiance. A painting that lingers in the memory.
Julia Lambright Allure

1st PLACE
A painting that captures mood with economy and elegance. The cool palette is perfectly suited to the subject, and subtle value shifts create depth and distance. It is lyrical and calm, with just enough detail to anchor the viewer while leaving room for interpretation. A work that shows restraint and confidence.
Henriet Lapshina Paris in Winter III

2nd PLACE
A playful and inventive piece that immediately engages. The concept is humorous, but the execution is refined: color harmony, balance of form, and confident mark-making make this far more than illustration. It is clever, memorable, and artistically strong.
Douglas James Stewart
Humpty Dumpty Gets a New Throne

3rd PLACE
A work of layered meaning and strong design. The composition is inventive, guiding the eye through shifting spaces. Color relationships are sensitive yet bold, and the handling reveals both confidence and curiosity. It is a painting that tells a story while leaving space for the viewer’s imagination.
Angela Parr
The Places I’ve Been

Patricia Gray
Quince Branches in a Ming Vase
HONORABLE MENTION
A still life of elegance and restraint. The arrangement is balanced, the forms clear, and the subtle use of color gives the work a timeless quality.

JUDGE’S CHOICE
A portrait full of life and theatricality. The character’s presence is undeniable, expressed through dynamic color and confident drawing. It is both entertaining and poignant.
Anna Dinkel Queen of Cabaret

JUROR’S CHOICE
Color combinations are a big draw for me, and I really enjoyed this abstract piece for its choices and balanced use of secondary and complementary colors. The arching lines and shapes create rhythm and movement, and I see fish swimming, which adds a narrative. Abstract work is often overlooked, and I wanted to highlight this piece for its design and use of color.
Jo Gray
The Flow

JUROR’S CHOICE
I loved all 4 of Kellie’s pieces, but this one just had an edge over the others for me. Confident mark making and great use of color, especially the contrast of bright lights against the dark olives and deep blues of the shadowed trees. I love the warmth of the sunlit spot that invites you in, also the use of soft violet and lights throughout that keep your interest and create a sense of balance and rhythm. The lead in the pathway was nicely broken with soft grassy edges and patches of warm light, and subtle tire tracks. A beautiful piece that I would happily have on my wall.
Kellie Jacobs Nature’s Curtain

Joanne Agostinelli
Impression Cholla
JUROR’S CHOICE
This piece stood out to me for the different handling of pastel, almost a pointillist style. I love the dark contrast of the cactus stems with the highlighted tips that almost glow in the light. Again, good use of a complementary palette with the balanced use of warm blue in the shadow work and cool blues in the reflected light and sky.
