RED ROCK PASTEL SOCIETY 2024
Juried Member Online Exhibition
Each year I start eagerly anticipating our Red Rock Member Exhibition. This year was not an exception even though I was expecting a very special guest to join me — our daughter Laurel «Lala» Alexandra, she entered the world and altered our reality.
Between the early fog of motherhood, followed soon after by the IAPS Convention, it was still crucial to me to keep our society going and make this exhibition special. By introducing the Masters division we felt this was a step, but as I learned: you can’t contain growth, you only can adapt. The growth of our society and the mastery of individual artists left me no choice; this was needed and was wonderful!
I believe the introduction of the Masters division was timely and well received. I feel it may even encourage more emerging artists to enter the Open Division.
As you will look through the pages of this catalog, I hope you will be amazed by the versatility and brilliancy of pastel medium as I was. You will see how artists from all over the world and all across the U.S. came together to celebrate the medium in a variety of styles, subjects and artistic choices.
I truly hope you will enjoy this exhibition as much as I did. And get inspired for your own artistic endeavors!
Dasha Jamison, President RRPSNV
Congratulations to ALL whose work is featured within our 2024 Red Rock Pastel Society Juried Member Exhibition.

Lyn Asselta
Lyn Asselta has considered the landscape her muse since she was a child. Growing up on the coast of Maine, where weather often changes by the minute, the effects of atmosphere on land and water were an everyday, mesmerizing occurrence. That fascination with atmosphere has kept her occupied for decades while living along the Atlantic Ocean and intracoastal waterway in northeast Florida, in the Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina, and more recently, along the coast of Maine once again. She’s spent a lifetime reveling in the rich details of the natural world and she draws from her love of nature when creating her paintings. Her chosen medium of pastel allows her to extend her tactile sense of communicating with the world into the painting process at her easel.
Asselta’s paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States and have been included in invitational exhibitions in France, China, and the UK. As a workshop

instructor, she has taught in Canada, Curaçao, and extensively across the USA. She is an IAPS (International Association of Pastel Societies) Eminent Pastelist, a Pastel Society of America Master Pastelist, a member of the Salmagundi Club of NYC, a Master Pastelist with the Southeastern Pastel Society, an Associate Artist for Unison Colour, and is the founder and past president of the First Coast Pastel Society in northeast Florida. In 2009, Lyn was selected as an Artist in Residence at Acadia National Park in Maine. Her work has been featured over the years in art publications including Pastel Journal, Plein Air Magazine, and Pratique des Arts magazine (France). Her landscape paintings and process have been included in several books on the pastel medium and plein air painting. Lyn has published her own book, Seeing the Landscape, and writes a weekly newsletter about nature and art called “Saturdays at the Cove.”

I spent quite a long time with this painting. The more I looked, the more fascinated I was with the ability of the artist to create movement, implied action, and drama in this piece, all without “typical” visual clues, instead opting to silhouette the horse and rider on a dark background. The use of lost and found edges in this piece is superb. To me, it is imbued with a dynamic narrative that is aided by the dramatic lighting, the tension created in the space between the rider’s head, looking to his left, and the horse’s forward gaze, and the momentum suggested by the horse’s movement. All the artist’s choices in this piece are spot-on, and the execution of the piece is technically masterful — a powerful combination that has created an exquisite piece.

Sergey Pietila Cardinal
Masterful in technique and emotion, this portrait so successfully combines composition, color, and value to evoke a sense of contemplative quiet reflection in its subject. The choice of color, the subtle, shaded varieties of garnet against the luminous gold backdrop create a sense of nobility, yet one wonders about the serious, penitent posture of the subject… what emotions is he feeling? There is power in this piece, power that comes from the subject matter itself, combined with absolutely masterful use of color and strong composition.

JUDGE’S STATEMENT
Cory Goulet Organically Grown
There is a sophistication to this abstract that I feel comes in part from the artist’s choice of a square format, containing the eye and keeping the viewer involved in its rhythms, dancing around with the colors and marks. It offers nooks and crannies to delve deep into, and areas of light that seem to float forward, toward the viewer. The balance of greens and reds, blues and orange, give it an aloof, yet inviting feel. It very successfully combines color and surface texture and movement.

This painting is such an excellent example of fearless composition. The close-up view and the actual centering of the rounded coil of rope over the blue denim of the pant leg places the focal point just above dead center, yet everything else about this composition conspires to hold our interest and keep the eye roving back and forth taking in the intricacies of detail that showcase a mastery of technical ability. The fairly limited complementary palette allows the pant leg and the background to hold our attention. There is a sense that the rider and horse are comfortable together, even without a complete view of their bodies. This is a painting I would have enjoyed spending time with, taking in all it has to offer.
AWARD OF EXCELLENCE JUDGE’S STATEMENT
I am always looking for unique approaches when judging a show. This painting combines shape, surface texture, and composition to offer an intimate view of these forms. We don’t know exactly what they are, but we can feel the tension of this crowded space, adding yet another dimension to its narrative.

What caught my interest immediately with this painting was the enormous dark shape that dominates the foreground. What held my interest was the way it literally pushed my eye to the cold, airy space all around it, making the reflections and that luminous sky even more important than this very large shape. The subtle light at the bottom of it, connects my eye to the snow to its left, while the darkness at the top of it contrasts beautifully with the sky. No part of this painting remains kept from the eye, and one wanders through from foreground to background in this chilly landscape

This painting’s skillful balance of shape and color, the subtle shifts in value that led me into areas that implied a wonderfully rich narrative, all conspired to keep me wandering around happily, discovering positive and negative spaces rich with interesting surprises.

Judge Jacob Aguiar, born in Kansas in 1984, has always been inspired by the natural world. His early passion for the outdoors and art led him to a pivotal year in Sebastopol, CA, where he studied landscape masters and honed his pastel painting skills. After nearly a decade balancing naturopathic medicine and art, Jacob retired from medicine to focus solely on painting.
Now an internationally recognized pastel artist, Jacob lives in Boxford, MA, with his family. He paints both New England and Wyoming landscapes, earning numerous awards, including 3rd place in the 2017 Plein Air Salon and multiple accolades in Pastel 100 competitions. In 2023, he received honorable mention and 1st place from the American Impressionist Society. His work is exhibited in galleries across the US and will feature in a two-person show at the

BEST IN SHOW JUDGE’S STATEMENT
This piece stood out to me for its uniqueness and intrigue. I kept coming back to it, discovering something new each time. It’s like a patchwork quilt of a landscape, with fascinating elements woven into the scene. For example, in the upper left, there’s what looks like a value card—perhaps something the artist used in plein air painting— adding a connection between the process and the landscape itself.
The composition is filled with unexpected details: an easel on the left, a metal road barrier on the right, a palette, and even what seems like a second easel in the corner. It’s layered and mysterious, inviting the viewer to explore further each time they look at it. The sky shifts from an ominous thunderstorm to clear blue, creating a dynamic contrast that enhances the scene’s complexity.
What I love most is that this piece leaves room for interpretation, encouraging a conversation with the viewer. It’s like multiple paintings within one, each adding depth to the overall experience. While the artist’s other work was more traditional, this one took risks, and that boldness paid off. Initially, I placed it second, but the more I examined it, the more it captivated me. In the end, it stood out as the most intriguing and successful piece in the show. Congratulations to the artist!
I PLACE JUDGE’S STATEMENT
Sebastian Ilczuk Mountain Impression
Congratulations, Sebastian! I selected this piece because it creates such a strong sense of place and time. The way you handled the light is exceptional, with a subtle shift between light and shadow on the mountain. This delicate treatment gives the impression of a sunrise, especially with the soft pinkish hue, and it shows a deep understanding of the scene, likely from plein air work or close observation.
The light creates a cool, early morning atmosphere, almost as if there’s mist in the air. You’ve truly captured a fleeting moment, and that’s what makes the piece stand out. The landscape feels alive, and you’ve preserved that specific time of day beautifully. It’s not just a portrayal of the scenery but a reflection of how landscapes change—whether it’s the trees in the foreground or the light on the mountains, it feels like a moment that could quickly pass. Your ability to evoke not just a place, but a feeling, is what makes this piece truly remarkable. Great work!
II PLACE JUDGE’S STATEMENT
Mike Ishikawa
Convict Lake, Autumn is Here
This piece really showcases your confidence and boldness, with an energy that leaps off the canvas. I first noticed this quality in your work at IAPS when you took my one-day workshop. By the end of that day, you had already completed multiple 18 by 24 pieces, all with the same quick, confident response to the scene. That energy is here again, and it’s impressive. The design of this piece is beautifully executed, with a strong, confident palette that shows your expertise. What really stands out is the energy in your mark-making. There’s nothing tentative about it—you know exactly where to put each stroke, and it adds a dynamic feel to the piece. That level of confidence comes from your strong foundation in drawing, allowing you to make bold choices in color and composition without second-guessing. Every stroke feels deliberate and purposeful, which makes the piece come alive. From the moment I saw it, it jumped out at me as a possible award winner, and after a deeper analysis, it held its place among the top contenders. Fantastic work, Mike. Congratulations!
III PLACE JUDGE’S STATEMENT
Brigitte Charles Ode à Sarawasti
Congrats! This piece really stood out to me, especially with its confident use of color. The artist took some creative liberties in the composition, and the strong S-curve really adds depth and perspective. It’s somewhat hidden by the lily pads in the upper left, but it’s there. Not being an expert in plant anatomy, I get a sense of human anatomy from the piece— like interconnected organ systems, with vessels linking them. I loved it. Compositionally, it’s handled beautifully. Lily pads are harder to paint than they appear—artists like Jeanne Rosier Smith make it look easy, but this artist’s unique take elevates it beyond the purely representational. A truly successful piece!
DARIUS MEMORIAL AWARD JUDGE’S STATEMENT
Barbara Johnson Cape May Marsh
Congrats! This piece stood out to me for its strong application and confident execution. The artist’s intentional use of color is evident, especially the striking placement of the intense blue shadow next to the golds and grass. Notably, the gold is softened with a lighter cool blue hatching, which enhances the complementary effect without overwhelming the viewer.
The composition is particularly strong. Despite having a strong horizontal element with the background trees at midline, it is effectively camouflaged by the verticals of the trees on the left, which extend down and bridge the ground and sky. The overall energy and confidence in this piece are impressive. The artist clearly had a plan and executed it beautifully. The work reflects a decisive approach that contrasts with a more methodical style, showcasing a vibrant and dynamic execution.

STATEMENT
Kellie Jacobs
Early Light on Wagner Creek
As a landscape painter, I don’t usually gravitate toward landscapes when giving awards, partly because I’m familiar with the techniques involved. However, this piece stood out to me for its exquisite tonal quality and the soft, neutral blues and pinks used in the sky. The artist employs intriguing techniques, like a splatter effect in the background trees, which adds depth and subtlety. The classic S-curve composition guides the viewer’s eye to the light streaking through the upper right corner. Overall, this piece is a beautifully executed, moody landscape that effectively captures its essence. Congrats Kelly!
HONORABLE MENTION JUDGE’S
STATEMENT
Mélissa Losano
Château de Vallin en France
Congrats! I awarded this piece for its freshness, vitality, and beauty. It exudes the aliveness of a plein air work, though I’m not familiar with this artist’s work. Judging this show was refreshing because I wasn’t influenced by familiar styles, allowing me to appreciate each piece on its own merits.
I particularly love the sketchy quality of this work, which captures the energy and spontaneity of plein air painting. The composition is successful, focusing more on the dynamic feel of the piece than on traditional structure. The handling of the buildings and the large tree on the left, with its dark shadow areas, is especially well done. Overall, it’s a beautifully executed piece with a vibrant and engaging quality.
HONORABLE MENTION JUDGE’S STATEMENT
Douglas James Stewart
Slow Order at MP 55
I appreciate how these pieces complement each other despite their differences. While the other work focuses on energy, movement, and emotion, this piece stands out for its geometric strength. The bold shapes and simplified background, including the posterized sky and mountain, contribute to its impact. The artist’s handling of the train’s surface captures its age and weathering while maintaining a strong presence. The square composition enhances the geometric tension and highlights the asymmetry within the piece. Overall, the artist’s approach to simplification and strong geometry makes this a remarkably effective work.
HONORABLE MENTION JUDGE’S STATEMENT
Anna Dinkel Pink Dreams
I awarded this piece for its exceptional handling of figurative elements and masterful use of hatching, which creates subtle shifts in value and color temperature, particularly on the face and shoulder. The work has a photorealistic quality due to its excellent value accuracy. The composition is compelling, with a circular flow that draws the eye from the face to the foot and back, enhancing the overall engagement. The artist’s choice to include the foot was a smart decision, contributing significantly to the piece’s success. While the drawing of the hands could be more refined, the overall impact is powerful and beautiful.

“It was a great honor to serve as Senior Juror for the Open Division of the Red Rock Pastel Society NV Online Members Juried Open Exhibition 2024. I was presented with hundreds of artworks, a feast for the eyes, and faced the challenging task of selecting pieces for the exhibition and passing on my results to the final judge. What makes a good painting? All art—whether music, drama, literature, or visual—should embody three key elements: Revelation, Communication, and Celebration. Art should reveal the artist’s world and story, communicate with the audience, and celebrate the natural and human aspects of life. I am pleased to announce that the Juror’s Choice Award goes to ‘Crossing’ by Patrick Henry, a painting that beautifully incorporates all three elements. Congratulations to all artists in both divisions.”

Anita Law Beaty Beauty
What she is wearing and the elegant drapery connect so beautifully to her glowing skin tones. The portrait is simple, yet keeps me engaged. I love the shadow on her face, the reflected light and soft depiction of her features, the ear peeking through her hair, the softness of her gently cascading braids. The angles and light help to move our eye around the portrait, finally settling on her face, the lovely focal point.
I want to know this woman, to sit and listen to her talk about life, to have a cup of tea with her. She emanates dignity and natural beauty, kindness and warmth. I feel a sense of optimism, a quiet confidence, and an outreach to connect with others, despite any struggle or challenge she has faced. Her head is firmly held high.
Congratulations, Anita, on a very beautiful portrait! It spoke to me!
