The National 4H Conference in Montreal, Canada based their theme around leadership this year. Senior Jessica Schruck was accepted to take part in this conference. She took on the challenge of learning new leadership skills and putting them to use. “In order to take part in the conference you send in an essay-based application to get accepted,” Schruck said. Schruck sent in her application for the Washington conference originally. The application was then sent on and reviewed for the national conference in Montreal. “They told me that my application was very good. They felt it exceeded the expections of Washington and sent it to nationals,” Schruck said. Schruck was then informed that she was accepted to nationals and would begin her journey on Sept. 19. “I was very nervous about not being able to understand everyone,” Schruck said. “In Montreal, they speak French Canadian and I have been trying to learn the language the best I can.” While learning a new language may have been hard for her, she also had

Senior Jessica Schruck was one of only two people to represent Wisconsin at the National 4H Conference in Montreal. “My favorite part of the conference was just getting to meet new people,” Schruck said. “My facebook is going crazy with friend requests.” to prepare to talk in front of a large crowd. “At the end of the conference, we had to present what we learned at the conference to over 100 kids,” Schruck said. Schruck was excited to see what the conference would have in store for her and if it would meet her expectations. “I think the conference was challenging in a fun way,” Schruck said. “I was able to meet a lot of new people and be a representative of Wisconsin and the United States.” The conference ended up being a great learn-
ing experience filled with memorable moments for Schruck. “I was asked to sing the National Anthem at the banquet. I was very nervous singing for everyone,” Schruck said. Singing at the banquet will be something unforgettable for Schruck, but what she has learned from the conference is something she feels everyone should know. “Learn by doing. Follow your dreams and reach for the limit,” Schruck said. “If you make a mistake you will learn from it.”

Newsbriefs Berlin High School enforces stricter rules Mascot situation on hold, Mukwonago sets precedence All of last year, no one really knew what the fate of the Indian mascot would be. Some thought it would change before the 2012 school year began. For right now, the mascot is the Indian. The case is technically still in court and waiting on the judgement from the Mukwonago trial, which is taking place at an upper level court in Madison. “When the Mukwonago case is heard and decided on, that will set precedence for ours,” Principal Lynn Mork said. “We are on a hold until the Mukwonago case is decided.”
Hot lunch menu changes due to obesity, prices go up
The lunch menu has recently undergone some changes. There are new hot lunch federal regulations that have limited bread, meat and calories, as well as saturated and trans fats. “I do believe this change was driven by Michelle Obama on childhood obesity and trying to combat it,” Food Service Director Peggy Seaman said. The price of hot lunch has gone up as well. The school is under federal regulation as far as the price of hot lunch. “We are forced to increase the price of lunch every year,” Seaman said. “They set the amount at which we have to set the price.”

No cell phones... “Wait what? We have detention?!”

There have always been rules to keep students from skipping class, using cell phones during class and wearing hats in the building but this year, the plan is to enforce them more consistently. “Last year these things became bigger problems at the end of the school year, so we are enforcing it right away,” Assistant Principal Joe Brandl said. Skipping class is an issue for some students, but administrators hope that enforcing the truancy law more will help cut down on the problem. “If a student skips two or more class periods, they can become tru-
ant and receive a fine,” Brandl said. “Anything more than five class periods could be a habitual truant, which increases the amount of the fine.” Skipping class is not the only issue. Using cell phones during class has also become a big problem. The cell phone policy is the same as it was last year. On the first offense, students may pick up confiscated phones in the office at the end of the day. The second time, parents of the student have to come pick it up in the office. The third time a student is caught, the phone is not allowed in school. The main goal is to stop students from skipping class and using their cell phones. The whole district is trying to enforce these rules from kinder-

garten to senior year. “By enforcing it young, hopefully we can catch it before it gets to the high school, so those things won’t be an issue,” Brandl said. Wearing hats in the building has also been a problem throughout the years. “We are trying to have students keep their hats off in the school so they don’t cause a problem during class and throughout the whole school day,” Brandl said. Similar to the cell phone policy, students caught wearing hats will have them confiscated. Students then have to pick up their hats in the office at the end of the day. By enforcing these rules early in the school year, the high school hopes to decrease the occurrence of any future problems.
