AODA initiative to benefit Berlin High School by

Sadie Obrigewitch

The Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (AODA) is a program dedicated to educating people of all ages on the affects of alcohol and drug abuse. The AODA works to provide alternatives to substance abuse. A faction of the AODA, the Action Team for Partnership, is a group of parents and staff from the Berlin Area School District whose goal is to provide safe and healthy choices for students and to keep costs low for families attending district-wide events throughout the year. The committee has recently formed a new fundraising program through Clay Lamberton Elementary School that is designed to benefit many programs at Berlin High School. Clay Lamberton school counselor, Rebecca Achterberg, a member of the Action Team for Partnership, is helping the effort. “We have survived in the past from an AODA grant that supplied us with everything we needed and more. The grant ran out last year, so we had to figure out how we were going to keep the program running,” Achterberg said. “This is why we fundraise. We try to not only fundraise for our program, but also other programs in our community and area.” The first fundraiser was Feb. 17 at the

game. If they brought a stuffed animal, they had a chance to win many great prizes.” The profits from these basket raffles and teddy bear toss are both to fund projects that were once funded by the AODA grant. These include: Post Prom, community movies and STAND groups. The stuffed animals will be donated to the

All throughout the week of Jan. 30 to Feb. 3, many students were surprised with random acts of kindness. The Student Council promoted passing on kindness to get through the dull winter months. They held a first hour trivia contest. Michelle Gregor’s class won the contest and received breakfast served by the Student Council. Teachers reported to Ragus when they saw a student do a random act of kindness. That student then received a free movie pass. It was Ann Ragus’ idea to bring the random acts of kindness week to Berlin High School. “The Student Council decided to

participate, and everyone helped,” Ragus said. “However, it is a national week that everyone should be celebrating.” The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation was established in 1995. Their goal is to help everyone create a better world by spreading awareness and increasing encouragement in kind actions. “The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation inspires people to practice kindness and to pass it on to others,” www.randomactsofkindness.org said. Student Council member Celia Mueller, thinks that the week was a worthwhile idea. “It was good to spread kindness through the school,” Mueller said. “It also made people’s day better.”

Random Acts of Kindness

-Feel good notes were placed all over school.

-Students received rewards for being kind. -Doughnuts were handed out to first hour students. -Candy was found on the bottom of desks. -Ice cream sandwiches were handed out during lunch.

On Feb. 1 a group of eight students from Berlin High School along with science teacher Pat Arndt joined two other groups from West Salem and Shawano High School for the 2012 Trees For Tomorrow. The students had various classes from Live Birds of Prey to Exploring Energy, while also learning how to snowshoe and ski. After a four-day trip the group returned on Feb. 5.

Change to 2012-2013 school year calendar

After much disscusion, the School Board voted to change the 2012-2013 calendar. With 750 responses to a recent survey posted on the Berlin Area School District website, 53% voted to have a shorter spring break. Next year’s spring break will be from Good Friday to Easter Monday with the school year ending on May 31. There is no longer a five-day break before Easter.

Mascot Update The selection committee has come to the decision to change the mascot name and logo. A survey will be available early March in the high school office, the district business of-

fice and in the Berlin Journal. The survey will ask for mascot suggestions. All students and community members will be able to take the survey.
