Senior Spotlight: Josh Zahren

Zahren plans to teach English in Germany upon his graduation from W&J College.

Josh Zahren ‘17 is a German major and triple minor in Gender and Women’s Studies, English and Math at Washington & Jefferson College. He is a part of the German club. When Zahren

graduates from W&J, he is planning to get a Fulbright scholarship to teach English in Germany.

Concerning the application process, he said, “It was a very long application; there were a lot of revisions to make.

Basically, if I get it, I would get transportation to and from Germany, housing and an English teaching position.

After a year of teaching English, Zahren wants to attend graduate school for German literature. He hopes to one day become a professor.

Zahren is currently 21-years old and in five years, he sees himself still in school, probably in Germany.

Zahren found his love for Germany when he studied abroad there for one year.

The thing Zahren will miss the most about W&J is his professors. “I’ve become really close to a lot of the professors and the community itself.

You know that there is a lot of people here that care about you,” he said.

Zahren aspires to visit Germany again for Oktoberfest.

He said, “Oktoberfest is not really

celebrated in the United States. There are a few tiny celebrations, but nothing like Germany.” Besides focusing on his studies, Zahren also works.

He has a job as a Resident Assistant in Cleveland Hall.

He is also a LINK mentor to freshmen students and works as a PAL tutor for German.

Healthier Food Choices on Campus

Since fall semester kicked off in September, the Barista Cafe has amazed students with the offering of several healthy foods.

This change includes foods such as ham and cheese sandwiches, yogurt cups, egg sandwiches, turkey and cheese sandwiches and pepperoni and cheese to-go boxes. Of all the tasty foods they newly re-

leased, I adore the homemade yogurt cups the most -- especially the dried pear and mango/coconut flavors.

Though with one meal swipe I can buy two more yogurt cups at G&T’s than in Barista, I no longer hoard yogurt cups at G&T’s like I used to last semester.

Rather, I use my meal swipe for a large mocha and a yogurt cup, even if that means I would now have to pay out of pocket for snacks whenever I feel hungry at night.

Xiuzhen Tan ‘17 expressed her liking for the Barista’s yogurt cups as well. She said,

“Though G&T’s sells yogurt cups, I still love the yogurt cups in Barista. It [the one in the Barista] is homemade!”

Debra, a lovely lady working in the Barista, said, “Since the launch of healthier foods, the counter [in the Barista] needs to be filled three times a day.”

Yet the speed of refilling these healthy foods still could not keep up with the speeds of exhausting them.

Though the counter was just refilled a couple of minutes before I interviewed Debra at around 6:30 p.m., the egg salads were again sold out within the time period.

The Barista Cafe offers several healthy choices.

Being a zealous fan of the Barista’s wild berry smoothie, I then inquired Debra about the possibility of purchasing a smoothie or milkshake on meal swipes.

Debra immediately rejected it and said, “Adding smoothies or milkshakes onto a meal swipe option would mean more people buying them, which also means another full-time staff is needed [in the Barista] to operate the smoothie machine."

However, Debra did provide another more probable alternative. She said that she had pushed for a self-serve

smoothie machine for two years, and hopefully someone in Parkhurst management level could soon approve this.

In short, the staff of the Barista hope to offer W&J students healthier options that would also be available using their meal plans.

Limits in budgets can be a major obstacle that stops those in food services from providing healthy foods, as food service operations must be self-supporting.

I hope the Barista may again amaze me next semester for adding more, and healthier, varieties on their menu.

Operation Christmas Child Donation Drive

It’s beginning to be the most wonderful time of the year.

The time to give not only to family, friends and significant others, but to those who are less fortunate in the world.

The students of Washington & Jefferson College had the opportunity to give back by volunteering to do the Operation Christmas Child Donation Drive.

This event happened on Nov. 15, 2016 outside

of George & Toms and the Commons. This donation drive is nationwide and is run by a company called Samaritan’s Purse.

Students who participated were given an average-size cardboard or plastic shoebox and were asked to pack a box for either a girl or a boy in the following age categories: 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14.

The students were then asked to fill the box with gifts.

These gifts can contain anything from toys, school supplies, hygiene items, clothes and more. Samaritan’s Purse encourages students to also pray for the children who will eventually receive their

box. They also encourage leaving a personal note for the child, but that is optional.

After all the shoeboxes are collected, they are shipped all over the world to children who are affected by diseases, war and those who are less fortunate than us.

Rachel Marx ’17 shared her experience with the donation drive.

She said, “I think the project is an awesome thing to get into and very rewarding.

I do as many boxes as I can each year, but I love knowing I helped out even just one child at Christmas time. You do not have to be religious to do this -- just have a kind heart. It’s

very easy and affordable to do to give a child something that could last them year round.”

Similarly, Autumn Trembow ’17 shared her experience with the donation drive, as well.

She said, “Growing up, my church had a drive that is very similar to Operation Christmas Child, and my family participated in it every year. So when a classmate [Joe Goltz] gave me the opportunity to donate, I was more than happy to do so. I love buying Christmas presents for my loved ones every year, and the holidays in general, so buying presents for a little girl who really needs them was even more exciting.”

It is evident that many W&J students like Marx and Trembow enjoy giving back to children who have a harder, less fortunate life that is out of their control.

However, though life did not give these children the best deck of cards, receiving shoeboxes from Samaritan’s Purse program, Operation Christmas Child Donation Drive, fills them up with happiness, joy and appreciation.

Please Help Us To Help Them Fifteen students and myself (Cathy Petchel, Psychology Faculty) will be traveling to Athens and serving under-served populations. We will work with and support refugees and migrants seeking asylum and residing in camps outside of Athens through Caritas Hellas, and rescued sea turtles rehabilitating within Archelon. In 2015, almost a million refugees and migrants have crossed the Mediterranean from the Middle East and North Africa to Europe (most of them to Greece). In response to global economic crisis, Caritas Hellas provides food, clothing, tents, water, personal hygiene items and psychosocial support to those who reach Greece. Since 1983, the primary objective of Archelon, the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece, has been to protect and rehabilitate sea turtles throughout Greece. They rely heavily on volunteer efforts. The following items have been earmarked as needs: Refugee Families - Primary Needs: -Hats and gloves (one size fits all) -Socks (different sizes for children, teenagers, young adults) -Underwear for children, teenagers (various sizes) -Underwear for women (full brief- not bikini) Secondary Needs Preschool supplies: Books: small children’s picture books (focusing on animals and numbers) Art: -Crayons -Magic markers -Colored pencils –Water color paints and brushes Archelon: Rescued Sea Turtles - Primary Needs: Wiffle balls We will be conducting a drive on campus to collect these items staring the Monday after Thanksgiving. The drive will run Nov. 28 through Dec. 7.

Please place items for the donation in specifically marked bins located in the Commons, outside G&T’s, the first floor of Dieter Porter and Old Main.

Avoiding Politics Sarah Peterson Red & Black Staff

The election is finally over, and the end of political conversation is in sight.

With the controversy surrounding the election, however, the media still seems to be going strong and opinions on social media are inescapable.

Here are a few ways to avoid seeing political arguments until everything calms down.

Unfollow people: If the news on Facebook’s feed is upsetting, go to the person’s individual profile and hit unfollow. It is right beside the unfriend button.

In extreme cases, use the latter to get away from the news that is distressing.

Stay off social media or the internet: This one may be obvious, but it is hard in today’s world of constant news updates.

So, get a head’s start on final projects and papers, go shopping, take a long shower or take a walk instead

of staying on the phone all day.

Google how to unfollow news updates: It depends on the browser, but there is a way to not see political updates on phones and laptops.

This way, when the news is displayed, there is no political information.

Read a book: Instead of reading about politics, read about a fantasy land which has nothing to do with reality.

So, read a favorite book or a classic, and learn something new to escape the media and the news.

Also, possibly read a book that has a movie based off of it so it will lead nicely to an afternoon movie.

Spend time with friends: Instead of being on the phone, hang out with friends doing fun stuff. This way, there is nothing hurtful online to see.

So go watch a movie or eat out. Do whatever fun thing that is available.

Hopefully in a few weeks this election will be old news, and something more exciting will be going on.

Remember not everyone thinks the same, but knowing what is going on in the world is better than being oblivious.

Students Prepare: Snow is Coming Shannon Adams Red&Black Editor

Right now, it is hard to remember that students are in the middle of fall with all the high temperatures they have been seeing over the past couple of weeks.

Every year, students are gifted with snow early into the fall season, sometimes even on Halloween.

This year, however, students have steered clear of the white fluffy stuff.

I am not a meteorologist by any means, but I am predicting a light snowfall this weekend.

My sources come straight from “The Weather Channel.”

Breakout winter coats and fuzzy boots because winter is coming, or at least the snow is coming.

I know the high for Fri., Nov. 18 is 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but here in Washington, Pa., that does not matter.

Weather changes very quickly around here, and this weekend will be proof of that.

I predict that students will see some flakes falling from the sky Saturday night into Sunday.

I do not anticipate a lot of snowfall, and what snow we do get probably will not stick

to the ground until it gets colder on Saturday night and the ground has time to cool off.

The snow that does stick will most likely be gone by Sunday morning.

However, the snow will return Sunday night.

For those who are night owls and weekend enthusiasts, students might be able to sneak in some cute Instagram snow pictures before the snow is gone this weekend.

When student Joe Sarsfield ‘17 found out about the potential snowfall this weekend he said, “I feel it’s about time for snow to come,

break do not have to worry about snowfall affecting their travels.

However, students will see some more snow once they all get back on campus for the final week of November.

For those who are not fond of the cold weather nor the snow, make sure to bring winter clothes back to campus, because winter will be here very shortly.

Some students may be wishing for a white Christmas,and they may wish no longer.

Warmer clothes will definitely be needed this weekend considering the low for the weekend is 22 degrees Fahrenheit.

Thankfully, students will not see snow over Thanksgiving break or on Thanksgiving day. Students traveling home for winter

Manager Leah Segal ‘19 said, “I want it to snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas, but on 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 26 all the snow has to be gone.”

Santa Claus is going to have to polish Rudolph’s nose to be able to make it into Washington.

Remember, if this does not happen, I am not a meteorologist, just a college level journalist and an English major.

DubJay Cribs: Kris Amundson ‘19 Shannon Adams Red & Black Editor

Hey DubJay! Welcome to Kris Amundson’s crib!

Amundson lives in BicaRoss in a suite with Jake Beabout and Alex Franco.

Bica-Ross, or more commonly referred to as Bica, is right next to New Res and across the street from the Hub. While Bica may seem a little bit out of the way, it is worth staying here because of the suite layouts.

Amundson and his other suitemates each have a bedroom all to themselves.

This way Amundson has plenty of room to make the room his own. “Having a bedroom all to myself is probably the best part of living in a suite in Bica,” said Amundson about the setup of the suite. “As a musician I have turned it into my own little practice room where I can play keyboard, trombone or banjo.

I also use it to compose music for the W&J jazz combo,” said Amundson. The music that Amundson produces is very well put together and is amazing to listen to. His two suitemates do not seem to mind that he practices in their suite. Aside from using his room as a practice room, it is also thoughtfully decorated. Amundson said, “All around my room I have Big Bang Theory posters that my girlfriend gave me to remind me of home and Dali prints to challenge me to think creatively and openly.”

Amundson’s room is a very creative space. The living

room in Amundson’s suite is very welcoming and a great place for his suitemates and friends to hang out. Jake Beabout ‘19 brings us into the living room to show us their extensive entertainment area.

“Our room is set up in a way that allows us to have multiple computers and gaming systems on one side of the room allowing our chairs and couch to make a circle around it,” said Beabout.

When asked what they use this room for Beabout said, “We can play video games, watch movies on Netflix, listen to music and watch YouTube videos. There is plenty of room for our friends to come hang out with us.”

There really is a lot of seating and entertainment placed into the living area of Amundson’s suite. At first glance, one may think that the suite looks small. After further inspection you notice all the little details that they took to make it exactly how they want it. The end result makes their room look extremely homey and inviting. Beabout directs attention to the ceiling of the living area and said, “We also have flags of each of our suitemates’ home state and the United State’s flag.” When asked what improvements Beabout and Amundson want to make to the living room, Beabout said, “We intend to hang Christmas lights up to liven up the room even further.” Luckily for them, Christmas lights will be going on sale in a few months so they can make their room complete.

Is It Too Early For ‘A Pentatonix Christmas’?

It is never too early to start listening to Christmas music.

“A Pentatonix’s Christmas” is Pentatonix’s third annual Christmas album, which followed the immensely popular “That’s Christmas to Me.” Pentatonix was formed from a group of talented singers from Arlington, TX. The group performs popstyle covers of popular songs, and they also write original pieces.

The album cover itself has a very pristine and pure look.

The main theme is set around the colors gold and white.

When the album starts to play the audience’s ears are immediately greeted with two classic Christmas tracks.

“O Come, All Ye Faithful” and “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” both provide a warming introduction to the group’s musicality, evident in their additional embellishments to the favored Christmas clas-

sics. The album then quickly changes pace with “White Christmas,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and “Up on the Housetop.”

These three pieces will make someone envision a time by the fireplace where there could not be a care in the world.

When listening to “Christmas Sing-Along,” it is immediately realized that this is an original composition.

The bouncy beat makes it very easy to sing along and learn the lyrics.

“Christmas Sing-Along” is a song that will make oneself embrace the joys of Christmas.

Afterwards the album once again returns to traditional roots with “Coventry Carol.”

This piece is written in a minor chord, which gives the listener a feeling of disparity and loneliness.

Right before the last song on the album, the audience listens to “Hallelujah” and “Coldest Winter.” These two pieces provide a return from the previous despair and cold feeling. Finally, the last two tracks are entitled “Good to

Be Bad” and “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.”

“Good to Be Bad” is an original composition written contrastingly to the idea that people have to be good for Christmas. The final track is Pentatonix’s way of wishing their audience a warm and merry Christmas. The early

release of Christmas albums has become ritual in the United States.

Some people embrace early celebration of the winter holidays, but others find it annoying and premature to listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving. However, holiday-lovers have started

pushing all things Christmas before Thanksgiving.

However, this album is not something to complain about.

Pentaonix’s ability to tweak songs so that they have a more modern twist while retaining the classicism of the piece itself, will ensure that all can enjoy the album.

Crítica de cine: Eternal Sunshine Emilia Zamora Red&Black Staff

"The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" fue dirigifo por Michel Gondry con el guión de Charlie Kaufman.

La película fue estrenada en 2004. A lo largo del largometraje, la idea de la memoria se evalúa como un bien agotable, la tecnología de alguna forma se ha encargado de obstruir los recuerdos.

En esta película la efímera memoria está plasmada de una forma muy evidente, Lacuna es una empresa que se dedica a borrar recuerdos de los cerebros de la gente, mediante un procedimiento “científico” partes del cerebro son estimuladas de tal forma que recuerdos específicos se

eliminan del hipocampo, la amígdala y la consciencia.

Aquello sugiere una materialización de la memoria, un correlato objetivo que en este caso es el cerebro.

En los primeros minutos de la película se genera la duda sobre la cordura del personaje principal, Joel Barish, protagonizado por Jim Carrey.

Con una trama confusa y bastante surrealista se aterriza sobre aquello que no es surreal, el uso de la tecnología.

Desde una óptica muy humanista Joel Barish, sueña y es participe de sus sueños mientras le realizan el procedimiento de eliminación literal de Clementine, su ex novia.

Después de enterarse a través de una equivocación que Clementine, protagonizado por Kate Winslet, decidió eliminarlo de sus recuerdos,

Joel asiste a Lacuna con el fin de practicarse un ligero daño cerebral que la borrara de su mente.

Aquello podría contrastarse con la idea de la tecnología como medio para el procedimiento, aquello que es manipulado en la mente del protagonista se convierte en literal, de manera que la idea de la materialización de la mente y la memoria se ve confirmada nuevamente.

Despues de imágenes confusas y playstis musicales que valen la pena escuchar, Joel y Clementine se reecuentran y deciden aventurarse a una nueva etapa de su relación. ¿Qué tan probable es tomar una decisión sobre lo que recordamos? A pesar del procedimiento, ninguno de los dos había eliminado el recuerdo del otro por completo.

En esta película los recursos tecnológicos se cuestionan una vez más como equipos que generan un distanciamiento con la humanidad. ¿Qué tan humanos dejaríamos de ser si tuviésemos tal control sobre lo que nuestro cerebro recuerda?

'The Selection': Catty Castes Sarah Peterson Red&Black Staff

Kiera Cass’s “The Selection” is a mash-up of popular TV show “The Bachelor” and the old classic “Cinderella.”

Cass is a #1 New York Times Bestseller, and she is well known for "The Selection"

series. The book is about a girl, America, who is a singer living in a world divided into castes. Her particular caste is five, which means she is an artista.

In her world, people can marry into a caste or try to work their way upwards.

America is different as she is in love with Aspen in caste six, a boy who is forbidden to love her. America makes a pact with her mother in which she will enter into the Selection, the prince’s way of selecting

his future wife, in exchange for her parents accepting her relationship with Aspen. All girls picked for the Selection are immediately elevated to celebrity status and their families receive large amounts of money.

America’s problem is the unexpected politics of the Selection that she faces.

She is also figuring out her relationship with Aspen as she begins to feel a sense of intimacy with the prince.

Could she actually win the

competition when she is the odd girl out?

This is a really fun book series to read and one of my favorites. I like America’s story about the follow-up on her children in the “The Heir.”

The book is literally like watching an episode of "The Bachelor" with all the catfights and fun involved.

America is thrown into a world which she never knew existed. She feels overwhelmed when she has to one day plan a meeting for

foreign ambassadors the next day on television. She begins to feel alone and like she is losing herself. What America begins to realize is that her country has a problem with rebels, and America wants to know why they want to attack the capital.

It is addicting to see all the catfights, tears and friendships that are formed.

Which guy will America choose? Read to find out if the prince will make her his princess.

Una Entrevista con Carlos Monsalve Emilia Zamora Red&Black Staff No voltees, sigue recto y cuando llegues a la esquina, es ahí, la casa está a la derechaMe dice Carlos Monsalve en el teléfono. Cuando llegué a la esquina, escuché a lo lejos un grito animoso.

-¡¡¡Emilia!!!

Era Carlos, traía unas gafas, un sombrero, una facha pintoresca. Me hizo señas para que parquee el auto y de inmediato me sentí bienvenida. Después de un recibimiento acogedor y el saludo de Kafka, su perro pastor alemán, nos sentamos en una pequeña salita dentro de su enorme estudio.

“Está un poco desorganizado,” me dice.

Para entonces, estaba muy nerviosa para responder.

Con un acento entre caleño, bogotano y quiteño, Carlos me responde una a una todas las preguntas. Habla de filosofía, arte, literatura, psicología…Se extiende, se da vueltas y se da el trabajo de hilar muy fino para que todo quede comprendido.

“Bueno, para no extenderme mucho,” me dice, pero siempre se extiende.

Se sentó cómodamente en el sillón, me agradeció por haber venido. No podía dejar de admirar la belleza de su estudio: Dos pisos, el primero lleno de arte, cuadros, grabados, litografías, óleos, esculturas. El segundo tenía una colección de libros, donde

se destacaban: Kafka, Cortázar, Octavio Paz, Mario Mendoza, Vásquez, Varo, Historia del arte 1,2,3,4,5,6……

Con un fondo musical que fue alternándose desde clásica hasta salsa, la entrevista fluyó de maravilla. Para empezar, discutimos el tema de las licencias artísticas.

Carlos sugirió que los artistas, en efecto, se roban una cantidad de licencias; de licencias creativas y hasta licencias vivenciales y existenciales. En la medida en que el artista se siente un creador y se adjudica licencias para su creación, va encontrando las formas de violentar las barreras.

Los artistas precisamente lo primero que cuestionan es la forma en que fueron educados, las creencias que les quieren imponer.

Aunque le han rendido tanto culto a la irreverencia y al mito de la originalidad que todos han abandonado esa originalidad por pertenecer al grupo de los rebeldes. Cuando era joven Carlos utilizó muchas de estas licencias, se dejaba el pelo largo y se sentía un irreverente.

La forma en la que muestra su arte es sin lugar a dudas especial y desobedece los parámetros convencionales.

En sus pinturas se observan ciertos simbolismos y arquetipos que suelen gustar a la gente, como los árboles en colores rosas y las facciones mágicas de sus personajes.

toca con mucho de nuestra historia. Él tiene la sensación de que hay algo en sus obras que se mueve más allá del nivel de percepción consciente y en el nivel de existencia cotidiano. Me intriga mucho saber qué es lo que lo motivo a seguir el camino del arte.

Generalmente cuando somos pequeños solemos estar muy cercanos a la expresión artística en varias de sus formas; sin embargo, cuando queremos hacer de esto nuestro futuro empiezan a surgir inconvenientes para quienes nos rodean.

“Yo he hecho de la vida una cosa que para mi generación era compleja, yo sacrifiqué todo por esto,” me dice Carlos mientras me muestra una de sus obras. Una boa se extiende a lo largo de tres cuadros,

montándola hay indios, afros y españoles. Las obras que suelen llamarme más la atención son los desnudos.

Le pregunto sobre su esencia y que significa para él imitar el cuerpo humano de formas tan sutiles.

Para Carlos, la pintura de desnudos significa un tiempo de relajación; él pinta sus fantasías, generalmente está metido en su propio mundo y muy eventualmente pinta un cuadro por encargo.

Sin embargo, de joven aprendió que pintar desnudos era fascinante por la reacción de las muchachas y las personas que lo conocían, además de que el cuerpo humano tiene unas características distintas.

La piel, es completísima, tiene absolutamente todas las formas geométricas,

esferas, volúmenes, tubos absolutamente todo. Después de una larga conversación con el artista danos fin a la entrevista con muchas preguntas aun por contestar.

Su perro Kafka se acercó a saludar, restregó sus orejas en el sofá y se fue satisfecho.

Hablar con Carlos resultó encantador, su conocimiento se extiende desde arte hasta piscología.

Al terminar la entrevista me obsequió dos libros, un video, afiches y una infinidad de títulos que investigar.

Recorrimos el segundo piso de su estudio, salimos al balcón, hice unas fotografías y me despedí. Sin lugar a dudas, Carlos Monsalve es una de las mentes más lúcidas que he tenido la oportunidad de escuchar.

Urban decay and a blue sigh lost in ripped taxi seats Or on billboards too high in yellow light, weak.

Soulless eyes, stacking high, ghosts in tombs restlessly lie.

In Los Angeles, pets have been known to lead lives that are often no less posh and glitzy than that of their stylish owners.

They go from being chauffeured about in designer handbags to being permitted to eat off of the plates of their owners.

The people of Los Angeles sure do keep a special place in their hearts for their furry friends.

Now, some of these glamorous animal lovers have apparently decided to take this display of affection up a few notches by setting up a museum entirely devoted to pets.

One of the establishment’s exhibits is specifically devoted to one of society’s most infamous animal lovers: crazy cat ladies.

“One in four Americans feed stray cats, so many of us have crazy cat lady tendencies . . . Being a crazy cat lady can be immensely rewarding, but it can also be very stressful.”

These bits of information can be read from the plaques that can be found in the exhibit. The exhibit is essentially a huge mash up of made-up artistic, literary and cinematic pieces, and they are all devoted to cats. Among the

pieces is an entire rendition of a cat lady’s living room.

It relates the history of cat companionship, from catfaced effigies, to cat calendars and curios.

In addition to this weird, yet interesting, exhibit, the museum has other features to present to its guests.

There is a gallery known as “Fashion Tails.” It consists of a series of photographs depicting actors as they bond with their beloved animals.

There are images of celebrities in their living rooms with their four-legged friends doing everything from eating pizza to playing cards.

Ellen Lavinthal, an animal welfare activist and cofounder of the Animal Museum, states that the reasoning behind setting up the museum is to show “a historical perspective

of the animal protection movement."

Shannon Adams '17, a selfproclaimed cat enthusiast, loves the idea of the Crazy Cat Lady exhibit.

"I think that more museums about cats need to be opened," she said."This one is great because it's not just for entertainment. It's actually for a cause."

The museum is also meant to show the importance of the bond that humans and animals share with one another, hoping to “empower people and encourage change” by sparking people’s interest in animal rescue and adoption.

If you are ever in the Los Angeles area and want to support an animal-loving cause, stop by the Animal Museum for your favorite furry friends.

W&J Begins New Start-up Incubator

Washington & Jefferson College has recently taken into consideration the opportunity to help turn an older building in the heart of downtown Washington into a start-up incubator.

The school would need to cover 80 percent of the funding before the project could be started.

What experience does the college have with business start-up?

W & J started an entrepreneurial

studies program in 1984 with the generosity of Joseph Hardy III, the founder of 84 Lumber.

Classes ranged from sports management, art of negotiation, start-up blueprinting and business plan development.

These classes gave students the opportunity to delve into a potential career in selfemployment. However, in the recent years, things took a downward turn.

This past year, the College cut the program entirely and now only offers a concentration and emphasis in entrepreneurial studies,

which consists of a mix of certain business classes.

The school essentially cut the program, but still offers the title that comes with taking a few extra business courses.

With the recent retraction from this field of study, it’s interesting to see that the school wants to put all this effort into an incubator without offering the previous course material that helps spark the ability and thinking that differs from traditional business.

I came to W&J because it offered a strong entrepreneurial studies

program and to have that taken from me was extremely discouraging.

To now offer this incubation possibility is a great step back in the right direction.

The College estimates the project would be complete in the fall semester of 2018.

No terms have been set as to how people would be selected for it or what the priority would be with regard to students and local Washington residents.

One W&J student, who wished to be unnamed, is currently taking a new business class offered

for the entrepreneurship concentration.

The student said, “It has nothing to do with starting a business; it’s about everything but that. These classes have not helped me at all.”

A student who previously took entrepreneurial studies classes said, “The school took away some great classes and a great professor who was doing an exceptional job teaching said classes.”

I hope the college takes the initiative with the incubation opportunity and potentially reinstates some of the special topic entrepreneurial studies classes.

Trump’s Path to Change

President-elect Donald Trump released his first 100-day plan, angering some and pacifying others.

Many emotions, both good and bad, are still flying from this past presidential election.

However, at the end of the day, Donald Trump will still be our country’s new president.

Recently releasing his first 100-day plan, Trump has seemed to quiet some doubters, if only to further enrage others.

I was very satisfied with the things he has put priority on to accomplish right off the bat.

Ranging from immigration to health care, Trump’s first 100 days in office seem to show hope of legitimate change in the country.

It was not any secret that, if elected, Donald Trump would do his best to repeal the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare.

He seems to be keeping his word, proposing a new seven-point healthcare system

that will open up the market to create competition among healthcare businesses.

This competition will lead to cheaper prices for patients.

Trump also plans to block grant Medicaid funds to states, giving more power to the state government to allocate funding where each states’ residents need it most.

Most importantly, Trump’s healthcare plan is not mandatory.

People are free to enroll in Medicaid, purchase insurance or not have insurance.

This new system will also allow for healthcare premium payments to be taxdeductible.

Trump sees many problems with our own federal government, and he wants to start with perhaps the toughest one to fix: Congress.

Trump’s plans to establish term limits on Congress members within his first 100 days is one that will be difficult.

However, having the support of both the House

and the Senate may help him get the job done.

He also plans to enact a hiring freeze on federal government employees, with the exception of military, public safety and public health.

Trump is also pushing to place bans on foreign lobbyists raising money for American elections. This will help keep foreign interests from swaying elections.

Trump is a businessman; he understands that workers that are satisfied will work harder and create more success within a company.

He can see this concept carried over into our country as a whole.

He plans to renegotiate NAFTA and withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a deal that will drastically hurt American jobs and allow foreign companies to bypass US laws.

Trump is also planning to lift restrictions that have deteriorated industries that employ many Americans.

Industries such as coal,

natural gas and oil will begin to thrive again. He also will attempt to move funding from global, United-Nations-run environmental studies and allocate that money to our environmental needs here at home.

This will also be helping with things such as fixing our water sources in areas like Flint, Michigan.

Since the beginning of his campaign, Trump has shown passion in discussion of our country’s border security and problem with illegal immigrants.

He plans to cut funding from cities that proclaim themselves as “sanctuary cities,” as well as deport over two million illegal immigrants.

Should said illegal immigrants’ home countries refuse to take them back, those countries’ visas will be canceled and immigration from those countries will cease until they comply.

He also plans to introduce and convince Congress to pass

the “End Illegal Immigration Act.” This act mandates a twoyear prison sentence for illegal immigrants who illegally reenter the country and a fiveyear prison sentence to illegal immigrants who re-enter the country and have felonies on their records.

Trump also plans to add consequences to visa holders who overstay their allowed time, thus planning to open up some more employment opportunities for Americans.

These are just some of the things that Donald Trump plans to do in his first 100 days in office.

I encourage everybody to read his 100-day plan in full and form his or her own educated opinion.

Regardless of your opinion of president-elect Trump, there is no arguing he will bring change to this country, and possibly in the first 100 days.

From the look of his first 100 days, he will hold true to his word and make America great again.

PA Votes Republican This Election

Many counties in Pennsylvania voted Republican this past Election Day, Nov. 8, 2016.

For the first time since 1988, Pennsylvania voted red in the presidential election, throwing its support in for Donald Trump and his controversial campaign.

He beat Hillary Clinton for the state by about 68,000 votes.

In recent presidential elections, Democrats have won in Pennsylvania by

relying on strong support in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, as well as the state’s suburban counties, while the more rural areas showed support for Republicans. However, this year, Trump’s win in Pennsylvania shows the change in the overall political climate.

Pennsylvanian voters had many common complaints this election year, regardless of whether they were Democrats or Republicans. They were not happy with the way Obamacare is working. The high prices burden many.

Voters wanted blue-collar jobs, protection and a stronger focus on manufacturing.

They also expressed a distaste for the standard politician, wanting an outsider to change things up. Many felt the need to rebel against the media and elites, feeling their control and influence more than usual during this election.

Trump proved able to take advantage of blue collar base in Pennsylvania, doing what Romney could not in 2012.

He connected with voters who felt left behind or overlooked in the recent

political climate.

His persona, so different from the smooth, practiced image of the majority of politicians, caught the attentions of these working class voters who were sick of the norm.

Trump’s win came as a surprise to many, as Hillary Clinton was favored to win in Pennsylvania. Monica Park ’19 said, “Pennsylvania voting republican after a long history of being democratic is something important to remember for future elections.” Most took the outcome of the election in

Pennsylvania to be a sure win for Clinton. “No matter what the history, the outcome of the future in politics can and will surprise you,” said Park.

Trump made many promises during his campaign that served to increase and strengthen his voter base. However, as years of presidential disappointments and failures have shown, the simple act of making claims does not equal their success.

Whether or not Trump will be capable of fulfilling the expectations of his supporters remains to be seen.

Coach Spotlight: Cassie Wyckoff

Coach Wyckoff brings her talent and experience to W&J. She had a successful first season with the men and looks to build on that with the women's team.

After a year of transitional leadership, the men’s and women’s water polo teams have finally found a steady force in Cassie Wyckoff.

This July, Director of Athletics Scott McGuinness announced that Wyckoff was to be the new head coach of both programs.

While coaching for the Presidents is her first collegiate varsity head-coaching position, Wyckoff came to

Washington more than prepared for the role. She spent a season on the coaching staff at Stanford University during the same season that the Cardinal reached the Division I NCAA Championship game -- an 8-7 loss against University of Southern California.

Wyckoff was a two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Division I All-American at Indiana University.

She finished her college career as the top goalkeeper in Hoosier history with more than 1,100 saves in just four years.

During the 2011 season, she set a school record with 348 saves, which she topped the following year as a se-

nior with 356 blocked shots.

While at IU she was named to the All-Eastern Championship First Team in 2010 and 2011 and tournament MVP in 2011. In her senior season, she also led Indiana to its second Collegiate Water Polo Association title and second NCAA Championship appearance.

She has also competed on the international level when she traveled with Stanford to the 2015 World University Games in Gwanhju, South Korea.

She won a silver with Team USA at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China.

After graduation from IU, she played professionally for three seasons in Dunaujvros,

Hungary and Eger, Hungary.

After hiring her in July, McGuinness said, “Cassie brings energy and passion for the sport of water polo to the W&J campus. She has played the sport at the highest levels and is eager to now make her mark as a coach. We are thrilled to have Cassie as our head water polo coach.”

Coach Wyckoff said, "It is with honor and privilege to be a part of the Washington & Jefferson College athletic community. I look forward to being an instrument among an orchestra of many quality members and I'm beyond excited to get started." Wyckoff has already made history for the Presidents and for United States water polo. At Bucknell

University in September she and female referee Tiffany Urbanski are believed to be the first female head coach and female referee to work at the same varsity men’s tournament.

The W&J men’s team ended their season this fall with a record of 8-12 and a fifth place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Western Division Championship.

The women concluded their 2016 spring season with a perfect 14-0 record in CWPA play before falling to Connecticut College in the CWPA Division III championship game.

They will return a full starting line in the spring with seven seniors.

W&J Swimming & Diving Team off to Great Start

Both the men's and women's diving team are off to successful 2016-2017 seasons.

As the winter varsity sports teams commence its seasons, both men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams at Washington & Jefferson College have laid the groundwork for a very successful year.

The Presidents opened their 2016-17 season with a non-conference tri-meet against Alderson Broaddus and Frostburg State, where both W&J teams came out victorious, giving them a 2-0 start to the season. Alexis Glenn ’18, a co-captain for

the women, lead the team with a first-place finish in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:34.89 and in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:36.11.

Owen Hanna ‘18 commanded the lead for the men when he won two individual events, the 200-meter freestyle, in which he finished in 2:08.23, and the 100-meter freestyle, in which his time was 56.70.

The W&J women were also successful in their meets against Chatham and West Virginia Wesleyan.

They held their opponents 138-97 and 155-115 respectively, with tremendous help from Glenn, Chloe Magyari

‘20, Laura Travers ’17, Ann O’Connor ‘17, Madison Babicka ‘18 and Rachel Nye ‘18.

Glenn said, “This is a very exciting swim season so far.

The girls are 3-0 [in the conference] with a big meet coming up this Wednesday. We have a very strong women’s team this year with many outstanding freshmen who have stepped up to fill the shoes of some key seniors we lost last season. We look forward to seeing what we can do as a team throughout the rest of the season and PACs.” After the men’s match-up against Chatham was cancelled, the team fell to West Virginia Wesleyan 108-161.

Zach Lauer ‘19 led the men's

team with two wins in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke and was a part of the triumphant 200-yard medley relay team of Jeremy Glasner ‘19, Matt Noel ’18 and Tim Kudrav ‘20.

Lauer said, “Men’s swimming has gotten off to a really strong start this year.

With the addition of the water polo players [who cannot compete for the team during their own season], the team is in great shape going into a tough meet against Westminster on Wednesday. Everyone’s excited to see what they can do, and we all look forward to seeing what we’re capable of once PACs rolls around.” On Saturday, Nov. 12, both teams

faced York College in their fourth and fifth meets of the season.

Glenn yet again led the women’s team to a victory, while Lauer had great individual wins for the men’s team, who eventually lost the meet 117.5-166.5.

The list of women who contributed to the win is lengthy, but divers Kaitlyn Pawcio ’19 and Haley Ashner ’17 came up big with wins in the onemeter and three-meter diving.

Theo Skoric ‘19 dominated diving for the men, sweeping both the one- and three-meter dives.

Both teams will compete at the Carnegie Mellon Diving Invitational on Nov. 18, 2016.

Health and Fitness: Treatments For Joint and Muscle Pain

Joint and muscle pain is very common among all ages of people, especially athletes; yet, there are many ways to alleviate the pain.

Joint and muscle pain is common in athletes after enduring long, tough workouts.

Athletes often turn to overthe-counter pain killers, such as aspirin, Tylenol or Aleve.

Others utilize ice baths, electrical stimulation, heating pads or ice packs.

Some athletes swear by their pain-killing methods, but which is the most effec-

tive? Joint pain is often caused by repeated use of the joint.

This can be observed in knees and ankles after running long distances, or in other cases of excessive use and demand from a joint.

This pain is often caused by inflammation and swelling in and around the joint.

The extra pressure on the joint causes the pain.

In this case, over-thecounter medicines such as Aleve, ibuprofen, aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be used to reduce inflammation and fluid pressure from the area.

Tylenol, on the other hand,

contains acetaminophen, which has no anti-inflammatory properties. Taking this drug in response to joint pain will aid in no way.

A non-drug alternative to joint pain is the use of a heating pad. Applying heat to the affected area stimulates blood flow and therefore accelerates healing.

The heat will also help to reduce stiffness in the joint.

Muscle pain, can be relieved with the use of Tylenol.

How does Tylenol affect the central nervous system to reduce pain? Other treatments for muscle pain include ice baths immediately follow-

ing exercise, with heat applied later to help relax muscles and promote blood flow.

Electrical stimulation can be used as well; this ultimately works by electrically stimulating muscles to twitch and therefore increase blood flow to the area.

Beginner athletes or athletes trying out a new workout or exercising a new muscle group may notice they feel more pain.

For example, knee pain is often experienced in beginner runners.

This is because of the joints not being used at such a high intensity of impact for long

durations of time. Runners often find that if they can run through the pain for the first few weeks, it will taper off and eventually go away.

This article should not be used in place of a professional.

In the case of muscle or joint pain following exercise, please contact a licensed physician for care.

Muscle or joint pain can be signs of a larger, underlying problem.

Also, it is important to take all drugs according to their correct dosage; overmedicating often leads to a multitude of other problems and complications.
