2012 did not see the end of the world, as predicted by some, but the year itself ended in a terrible way for us. The young victim of a brutal gang rape died, after a valiant fight for justice and life. We may bow in reverence to her but before that, we must hang our heads in shame. Even as the shocked nation is spontaneously agitating, demanding the much-needed protection for women, more such cases are coming to light. According to the police, there is a 26% rise in the number of rape cases in Hyderabad. A silver-lining - and that should be welcome to us - is that Vizag registered 30% drop in crimes against women. Isn’t it time our policy-makers took a zero-tolerance approach to this barbarity? Stricter laws, better vigilance and 24/7 helplines - we must go for every possible measure to prevent such gruesome acts. Yes, the All(T)-party is over. It has, however, turned out to be another effort by the UPA government to buy time. Hopefully some concrete steps would be taken before the Telangana people lose their patience. The state has declared 2013 as “Telugu Language and Culture Development Year” at the recently held World Telugu Conference. The Tirupati meet, attended by a whopping 3 lakh people, displayed our culture in its pristine glory and also gave a clarion call to save it. Falling in step, we have done our bit, by reminding people of the fading Sankranti rituals (Tapering Traditions). At red, we always mull on new modes and methods to keep our readers informed and entertained. One such endeavour is to introduce a column - red Grace - wherein we can speak of women of substance. I am sure you would be delighted to read about Mrs. Promila Saraf and be inspired too. red Diva sets a new tone spotlighting Mrs. Shilpa Reddy, a beauty with purpose. This month red Life deals with Mr. A.T. Rayudu, who has significantly added value to the region with his ever flourishing businesses. TEACHING TRADITIONS Poonam Shah of Teeny Boppers School organised pre-Christmas and Sankranthi celebrations to educate the pupils of the traditions that are followed during these two festivals. CREDAI FAMILY PICNIC The city builders may be the busiest of all but they certainly took time off for their families and cooled off at the annual family picnic of CREDAI Visakhapatnam Chapter recently. Mr. Chilukuri Srinivas hosted the picnic held at Chilukuri Brundavan Estates, Kapuluppada. HELIOS GOES FOR CHIC LAUNCH The launch of Helios - The Watch Store and Titan Eye+ in Vizag was done with a lot of fanfare on 16 December 2012. A first of its kind “Wine and Cheese” party brought in sophistication in place of the mundane store inaugurations that the city has been used to. So, there were no ribbons or cakes to cut and there were no garlands or lamps to light. Instead, there were toasts to make inside the store and sky beams to light up the evening façade outside. Over 400 people attended the event in a seamless way, interacted with each other and browsed many international brands of watches and eyewear while sipping and savoring the delicacies. The guest list included the who’s who and the true connoisseurs in town. The franchisees of the store were present to wish and thank the guest for their presence. RACING ENTHUSIASM Autocross, first of its kind event to be held in the city, offered an ideal platform for many automobile racing lovers to exhibit the level of skill, focus and responsibility required for the sport. SECRET SANTA SCINTILLATES Kakatiya Ladies Club lives up to its tradition of celebrating important events. The members came together for an evening of Christmas revelry which was tied with the game of Secret Santa. Few lighted up the evening by singing Christmas carols while others joined them to cheer them. The Secret Santa was Sashi Nahata who was the centre of the attraction. f late there has been a steep mushrooming of hotels in the city. Debuting into this bracket is Jukaso. After making its presence felt in Delhi, Gurgaon, Dharamshala, Pune and Varanasi, it is the 6th hotel from this Group with a clear goal of offering 4 star services at an affordable cost in Vizag. Sprang up in one of the main arteries, Dwarakanagar (opposite VIP Lounge), the hotel is well-placed amidst business establishments. It’s an apt place for business meetings, leisure stay and to host small gatherings without burning a hole in your pocket. Besides 82 rooms, the hotel has a fitness centre and a small conference room. The guests can enjoy the complimentary wi-fi anywhere in the hotel. Yet another conference room with a 70 people-capacity is coming up in a month or two. The rooms are quite comfortable, with no compromise on quality and ambience. Though the hotel doesn’t give room service, it has complimentary tea and coffee makers installed in every room. The mini conference room is complimentary to the business groups that stay in the hotel.
Affordable stay, good food.
Jukaso specializes in South Indian, North Indian, Mughlai and Continental cuisines. The food is reasonably priced and buffet is worth every penny you pay. It does not provide a bar though. You can comfortably mix business and leisure at Jukaso!

The a la carte menu is simple Punjabi, yet quite impressive. Each menu carries the history of this glorious culinary brand. Other than the fresh raw materials (vegetables, meat), everything - from spices, flours, ghee and the pastes and even chefs are imported from Punjab. “For each of the dishes (curries and starters), there is a pre-processed gravy (plate-wise), just to carry the authentic aroma and taste of Punjab,” explains Brig. With each passing year we are moving away from our traditions. In fact, we are neglecting them to the extent that some of them went into oblivion. Are we so urbanized and modernized that we fail to hold on to our rich heritage and culture? Why do we adopt western culture with such fervour that poses a threat to the very roots we were brought up in? Anoohya B finds out why we evince more interest in organizing a Halloween party and slack, in stark contrast, when it comes to holding a parantam (haldi-kumkum).

Tell(y) Tales The scenario at hand is a complete contrast to what it was with the previous generation. Weeks before Sankranthi, you knew the festival was just around the corner due to the Muggulu (Rangoli) adorning every inch of available space in the front yard. There were ‘gobbillu’ (made of cow dung) which were a must accessory to the Rangoli. Bhogi manta - the bonfire represented the burning away of old items in your life, paving way for new changes and transformations. Apart from a few boisterous youngsters, no one seems game for a bonfire of late. The streets adorned a festive look with a combination of huge Rangolis, Haridaasus, Gangireddulu, Basavannas and cinders of bonfires. The sky used to be a riot of colours with numerous kites which is hardly an occurrence nowadays. Kids would rather play on their systems, gadgets or watch Sankranthi
related movies on TV than actually enjoy the festival. They say that the second day of Sankranthi is a time for family, which implies all kith and kin (not just the core) converge at one spot and celebrate the festival as it’s meant to be celebrated. The tiny tots of today, perhaps, don’t even know the joy in competitively snatching the Regi pallu (berries) and little coins from their siblings that go with the ceremony of Bhogi pallu (a shower of goodies). Where is the elaborate Bommala Koluvu (dolls display), the annual ritual in which families used to vie with each other for the best collection and display? The Clueless Class This scenario is not just pertaining to Sankranthi, but it holds good for all the festivals. No one is taking pains to actually go through all the elaborate

traditions that go with the festivals. The excuse, that we are caught up so badly in the race of urban corporate life and are left with little time for upkeep of the traditions, is inadequate because we Indians are a celebrating lot. While the north Indians import some western traits, we in the south get a mixed bag of both western and north Indian. What can be done? It has to start somewhere. It’s quite simple. Revive them! Every tradition has its significance. Gather the little kids, tell them the prominence and every little detail surrounding the festival. Conduct family re-unions and visit your villages that still hold a mirror to the traditions. Unless children are told of these valuable customs and taught to enjoy each and every nuance of a festival, nothing can be passed on to the next generation.

It is no big task to grow pastures in a fertile land but to scratch a desert and produce a garden is something only a very few can accomplish. That is what Promila Saraf has done. Moved by the prevailing penury and ignorance in a remote village Sriram Nagar, Garividi - 80 km away from Visakhapatnam - where destiny took her after marriage more than four decades ago, Promila began her life’s mission of creating a world for the deprived and the destitute on an unfamiliar ground.

The starting point… Married to Mr. R. K. Saraf, Chairman and Managing Director of FACOR, young Promila had everything going great for her - money, education, good upbringing and conjugal bliss. Yet she stepped out of her comfort zone to work for the vulnerable. Ground reality… Promila realized that mere doling out money was of little help and uplift of the have-nots could be achieved only by working alongside them. This ‘concern’ made her establish Women & Child Welfare Centre in 1975.
HER THOUGHTS
All in the family... The philanthropic gene runs in her family. It was her father the late Mr. Gujarmal Modi, a visionary and the architect of Modi Nagar in UP, who set her off on this path.
Initial hiccups… Her very first step of setting up a nursery school faced stiff resistance from the local people who looked askance at English as the medium of instruction. Yet an undaunted Promila went ahead, winning them over through protracted coaxing and cajoling. The effort was well worth the trial as today, it has grown into a well-known CBSE school with 1,200 students. It was followed up with a degree college. Creating awareness… While the children were lured into education by various sops including free uniforms and snacks, their mothers were encouraged to learn needle work and embroidery. Under the microcredit finance scheme, her centre helps women to set up selfsupporting enterprises. For the disadvantaged… Lack of schools for children with special needs further motivated Promila to start schools for hearing and visually impaired (Sabdam-1980; Drishti-1985) and mentally challenged (Mano Vikas-1988). And she does it with such great dexterity and aplomb that today she is the happy matriarch of a closely-knit household and a down-to-earth leader of a huge extended family as well.

Seeds sown Love for clothes since her childhood landed her in the lap of the fashion world. Besides herself being up to date, Shilpa has grown to give that ‘stylish’ look to others. She was in the eighth standard when she started designing clothes for herself, later for her friends, by using their moms’ saris. Buoyed by the response, young Shilpa did a course in fashion designing from JD Institute and later from Toronto, Canada. Made model Standing 5-foot-7 inch and blessed with a slim body, Shilpa was born to win. A casual trial at Miss Andhra Pradesh contest fetched her a tiara. The success journey did not stop there, as laurels kept pouring in from every quarter. Her marriage too never came in the way of her ‘elegant’ journey. Married to Mr. Preetham Reddy, a businessman, Shilpa found herself closer to her chosen destination. With Mr. Reddy’s encouragement, she not only contested but also earned Gladrags Mrs. India 2004 title. That in turn, opened the door to the fashion world.
She sashayed the ramp for several events and top designers including Lakme Fashion Week and Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Manish Malhotra and Rajesh Pratap Singh and established herself as a top model.
Learning phase With a number of titles in her kitty, Shilpa could have easily chosen a career in modelling. But Shilpa evinced a keen interest in designing that helped her become a creative fashion designer.
Family support She stepped into the glamour world with her parents’ support. Post marriage, she climbed new heights with her husband’s backing. In fact, her dear hubby became her guide, mentor and pillar of strength. She has an added advantage as her motherin-law herself is a fashion designer and sister-in-law Keerthi Reddy, an actress.
Shilpa as a brand Her hometown Hyderabad has her first flagship boutique named after her. Applying innovative techniques to traditional formats and reinventing cultural embellishment and embroideries, the label brings a new dimension to Indian bridal trousseau wear. Sophisticated cuts, clean structure, premium fabrics, impeccable fit and finish are the specialties of her designs. She likes power dressing rather than a very feminine profile. There is a diligent use of zippers and gold buttons and the structured outfits are complemented with collars and pockets. Each of her collection reflects the DNA of her creation. Right now, her brand is available across the country and will soon hit overseas.
Breaking the myth She turned a role model for those who aspire to be in the glamour world. Hailing from a conservative, traditional Telugu (Reddy) family, she proved that marriage is not an obstacle to a woman’s career. No matter how acclaimed your last creation was; a ‘silly’ mistake can spoil the reputation, says Shilpa and adds that one has to always deliver the best to remain on the top slot. Social service She is not confined to the glamour world or pursuing her career in designing only. She involves herself in cancer awareness workshops. She is also closely associated with an NGO called ‘Roshni’ run by her aunt, which deals with people suffering from mental disabilities. Healthy and hearty Owner of an hour-glass figure, she believes in low-fat, high-fibre and complex carb diet. She follows the rule - eat by keeping some space for the next meal without overfeeding at one go. She is inspired by her dad Jeevith Reddy, a champion swimmer and gives him the credit for her ‘robust’ health. She has made a five-days-a-week workout, a part of her lifestyle.

Excerpts How did 2012 treat you? Perfect, though it just flew by. I still can recall the first day of the year and look we are already through with it. God speed! A lot of work, but it was well planned and comfortably spread over the year. Any New Year resolutions? Not really. The year ended on a tragic note. So I want to start the New Year with a lot of positivity which I hope gets rubbed off on my family, friends and loved ones. How was your journey so far? When I look back, it appears like a dream as it was very smooth and I have got more than I ever expected. I’m grateful to the Almighty. What is your driving force? I don’t know what always propels me but I guess it’s my passion for acting. That precisely was the reason why I started so early. I love my job and it is my strength. Happy Days launched seven others along with you. But none of them has reached super stardom like you did. What role did glamour play in your success? It’s very important to understand that Happy Days was an unconventional film with specific role demands. So I got recognized. Yes, it’s basically a very offbeat film, which did very well. Earlier too I did do some roles but obviously they did not fetch me laurels. It was after the Happy Days, the commercial offers started pouring in. Your efforts to learn Telugu is commendable. Will you dub for yourself in future? I am very comfortable with Telugu and also it’s time I started dubbing. I am just waiting for the right role. Though you are the reigning queen of Tollywood, you are rarely dragged into link-ups and controversies. How do you manage that? It’s important for an actor to understand that she/he has a private life too besides being a celebrity. I like to keep my life as private as possible. Moreover, I am not very social. What do you do to de-stress yourself? I spend time with my family and friends to unwind. How do you react when you see yourself on the screen? I just can’t recognize myself on the screen. We heard you are a poetess too. Who are your favourite poets? Share your love for poetry with our readers. William Wordsworth is my favourite. When I was in school, I really used to enjoy reading his poetry. I used to write, as much as I read. However, of late I am not in touch with poetry though it still excites me. How do you manage to shuttle from Telugu to Tamil and now Hindi films? It has been pretty much a part of my life right from the beginning. So, I don’t find it stressful. How are things with you at Bollywood? Compare it with Tollywood. Though the people are culturally different, I have been welcomed with open arms at both the places. Your preference to work with Allu Aravind's production house is much talked about. What do you say? They are the ones who gave me a good break after Happy Days. They gave me 100% Love and Badrinath. I think Aravind garu has reposed great faith in me. It’s a fantastic production house and they churn out really good films. Though you have had a lot of flops in Tollywood, you are still the number one option for the producers. How come? I believe that an actress has a shelf life especially in the commercial line. I think you have to give your job your best. I like to be involved in the film right from the word go, giving it my unflinching support. That perhaps is the reason why producers feel comfortable with me. How different are you from your on-screen image? On screen you are playing different characters. But sometimes your natural traits get reflected on the screen. How do you handle criticism? Criticism is vital to improve one’s performance. How else do you know where you are going wrong?
How do you maintain your physique? I have been working out for the last 3 years. But of late I’ve restricted myself to yoga. I used to be careful with my diet, but now I am eating pretty much everything. I have a tendency to put on weight, hence have to be careful. Tamannah, a dancer, gives a tough time to heroes like Bunny, Tarak and Charan. What is the secret? I have been fortunate enough to train myself and dance. I also seek advice from my colleagues like Bunny, Tarak and Charan. When I’ve been working with them, they used to keep talking to me about how I can improve my dance. Dance has a lot to do with your mind and emotions. It is not about speed or precision. I think loving and enjoying it are the crucial ingredients. Your forthcoming ventures. I am working on a film with Naga Chaitanya, it’s a remake of the Tamil film Vettai. I am also working in Himmatwala with Ajay Devgn and Sajid Khan and I signed a film with Ajith and Shiva, a Tamil film.
Personal Diary If not an actor what would you have been? I would have been in the medical field because many of my family members are in it. Best compliment you’ve ever received. After Vana Vana song was done, Chiranjeevi sir complimented me. His compliments meant a lot to me. He is utterly sweet and such a down to earth person. He’s a huge inspiration to the next generation actors. You dominated Charan in ‘Vana Vana’. How did you manage that? I don’t know, there’s sometimes no logic involved [chuckles].

An oldest form of tradition has now become a source of inspiration for many a trendsetting designer! Be it art or utility, one metal - brass - has been evergreen and versatile! Traditionally, it has always been about beautiful artifacts, mostly religious, 'diyas' or lamps for a 'puja mandir’ or just display pieces like the traditional 'dogra' art! Brass inlay in wall panels and in furniture has always been a hit!
TO ILLUMINATE For last two years warm-toned metals such as copper, gold and brass are making a strong comeback in interiors. Mellow and brushed brass especially for lighting is quite in vogue. Brass reflects warmth and coziness in designing. One style I adopted widely is the brass beaten bowls of different sizes mounted on a textured wall and offset with some great spot lighting or back lighting; it looks great! Brass lights for walls, ceilings and table in different and funky designs are making their way into the market in a big way! On individual preference, one can go with brass floor or table lamps, pendant lighting or even a contemporary fashioned chandelier.
Most owners of handicraft stores swear by the brass products and say that till date, it is the highest selling item at their stores, be it statues for the home or for gifts as well. Everyone appreciates a well finished piece of brass and gives value to the same! Since last year, it has been hitting the market in a big way with designers developing a fetish for the metal and with a need to reinvent its usage. The trend is going to witness a boom this year. A host of designers have started manufacturing things more contemporary like funky candle stands, hardware and accessories. The list is endless! “Personally, I have used brass in many different ways off late,” says ace interior designer Ameet Mirpuri, sharing his expertise on this gorgeous metal. Let’s get a brass appeal to your home décor this time.
OUT-OF-THE-BOX Brass sheets can also be used to make cut work patterns and create a jaali (net) effect that can be mounted onto walls or onto paneling. We have used them in front of glass wall fountains so you actually see the water flowing through the cut work and in between wooden panels as well. Brass inlay panels of different sizes can be made in the form of strips or plates and embedded into doors for an oriental touch! Even the design of the carving or cut work can be customised to whatever design we make and give the worker, as there are even very precise machines that have taken over from traditional handwork nowadays! Artisticks (company dealing with brass and white metal carvings) in Hyderabad and Vizag are pioneers in any kind of brass work. ARTY TOUCH The traditional brass work has always been more about hand done work and always used to take forever to manufacture. But then again, that was the beauty of it! Apart from the traditional pieces, you can even inlay slim brass pieces into furniture! To give an ethnic touch to your doors, you can use traditional brass studs. To go rustic, you can use brass in a pewter finish which is greenish and is a great look for the outdoors! To go contemporary, use a Mukund Goyal designer handle or curtain hardware for accessories! So like I said, brass is one material that can be molded into any look, any form and will remain with you forever. But of course, good things come at a price!
ACCESSORIES For an economical yet evident brass makeover, the small little artifacts in this metal come handy. A brass bell hung at the entry of the living room, or a set of brass figurines kept on one corner of the sitting space looks awesome. A huge brass framed mirror fixed on a side wall of the living space or an urli with floating flowers at the entry can be an easy way to infuse a brass feel in any interior. The market flaunts such several other options, from candle stands, clock, key holder to nameplates etc., the choices are endless.
Care and Cautions There may be a few problems with using brass in cities that have humid conditions like Vizag though, so using the oxidised version of the same is always advisable! Special brass cleaning liquids are available at stores that sell brass artifacts that can help you maintain your pieces! In the places with dry climate like Hyderabad, you would never really have a problem! Three Hills Displaying the secularism at its best are the three hills. From Sri Venkateswara Konda one can view the port channel. The Mount Ross Hill is the central one. The north hillock has a mosque and the mausoleum of the Muslim saint, Baba Ishaq Madina and known as Darga Konda.

Tyda Nature Camp Tyda is a small tribal village nestled in the Eastern Ghats, 75 km away from the city on the Araku Road. Osman Sagar Lake Osman Sagar or Gandipet Lake, with lush gardens nearby is an ideal picnic spot. The heritage building Sagar Mahal overlooking the lake has been converted into a lake resort by the AP Tourism.

Shamirpet Also known as Pedda Cheruvu, Shamirpet with its beautiful lake and a deer park is a great picnic spot. The AP Tourism provides comfortable cottages and the AP Forest Department arranges forest lodges.

Indira Park Situated near the Lower Tank Bund Road and lying alongside the Hussain Sagar, the Park is spread over 76 acres of lush green area. This pleasant entertainment park is a much favoured place for many political and social meets.

Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy Botanical Gardens Spread across a sprawling area of 130 acres, these gardens are located at Kondapur. Housing different varieties of herbs, plants and trees, these gardens provide a visual treat to the eyes with water bodies, meadows and rich grasslands.

Keesara Located on east of the city, it was once the capital of Vishnukundin dynasty. One can see the ruins on the hill and in the museum located here. It also houses a famous Siva Temple.
