We are on the cusp of winter and summer. Neither it is too warm nor is it cold; it is just the right time for a reveller to freak out. But unfortunately even our educationists think that it is the right time to put our students to test. Perhaps that was the reason for the party scene in both the cities being a little on the dull note. Yet festivals like Maha Sivaratri and Holi can neither be by passed nor ignored. If the Bay City had come alive with the biggest Sivaratri event being hosted here, Hyderabad has witnessed the most happening Holi party. In this issue we record both the celebrations.

Taapsee, the model-turned-actress adorns the cover and in a no-holds barred chat, spills many beans. I hope the readers will find them quite palatable.

We could rope in Mrs. Suchitra Ella, who handles two crucial tasks as the Chairperson of CII Andhra Pradesh State Council and Jt. Managing Director of Bharat Biotech, for our Eve segment. To be frank, it was no mean task to pin down this hi-fi celebrity for an interview. But once we got her, she was all cooperation. Sharing the space with her is Dr. Rekha Dutt, the charming doctor who is known for her style and elegance, besides her philanthropy. She reads the minds and sets them at peace. Such experts are the need of the hour in these days of tensions and turmoil.

I personally owe a lot to Mr. Vasu Prakash, Director - Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan, which happens to be my alma mater. It is a privilege to cover him in our Life segment. Since it is the Ugadi festival edition, a special endeavour has been made to cover a dignitary from Hyderabad too. Dr. Gurava Reddy, Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon and CEO of Sunshine Hospitals, appears to be at his humorous best and we could capture him in this most delightful mood.

Our new column Spice seems to have grabbed quite a few eyeballs. We strive to make it tangier and more peppery.

Now I wish all our readers, advertisers and patrons a very happy Ugadi.

GOA TO VIZAG The Park brought in Goa’s trademark cuisine a unique combination of Portugese and Konkan culinary splendour christened ‘Goa to Vizag’.

An array of Goan dishes spread across the tables at the Shack Beach Garden included Vindalho De Carneiro, Xacuti Galinha (Chicken Xacuti), Peix Ambot Tik (Shark spicy and sour), Carfreal De Galinha, Sungta Chi Kodi, Goan Dal curry and others. The buffet consisted of a few starters and desserts like Bebinca. Chefs Carmo Peter and H. Saldanha from Goa presented the cuisine.

GAYATRI HOLDS EKATHRA Gayatri Vidya Parishad College of Engineering (A) held a two-day national level technical symposium Ekathra ’13. As many as 1,500 students from different parts of the state participated in the events like Unplugged, Pitch Perfect, Rock Blend and Stomp the Stage. K. Sudhakar, Principal Associate Director of NSTL was the chief guest and P. Sumanth, alumnus of GVPCOE and GM of Condura, Hyderabad was the guest of honour on the inaugural day. S.V. POLLOCKS FAREWELL DAY A Farewell Day was organised at Pollocks School for its outgoing students. Students remembered their relation with the juniors and the team spirit which had brought them together in various activities.

SANKETIKA YOUTH FEST The two-day youth festival of Sanketika Vidya Parishad Engineering College was held on a grand note at P. M. Palem.

HUMOUR UNLEASHED It was an evening of elite and entertainment, jokes and jibes, pun and punches, laugher and lucky draws. Maheswari Sabha, Visakhapatnam hosted a very unique evening, a Hasya Kavi Sammelan to mark the upcoming festival Holi in the beautifully decked Novotel hall. Ms. Sangita Rathi introduced the guest satirists Navneetji Hullad, Sandeepji Sharma, Pratapji Faujdar, Ghanshyamji, Agarwal, Pradeepji Chaubey and Surendraji Yadvendar, who regaled the audience with non-stop wordplay for more than two hours. The fitting finale was the scrumptious dinner. Office bearers of the Sabha, Ramesh Bangur, Sushil Somani, Rakesh Rathi, Ashok K. Mandhani and Nitesh Pasari worked hard to make the occasion a thumping success.

To add a local flavour, the surprise element was a medley of Tollywood songs! The event took place at Shilpakala Vedika with a packed auditorium, classic stage decoration and amazing costumes.

V I Z A G GANTA VS BOTSA Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao had his way and got Sukumar Varma, son of Yelamanchali MLA, Kannababu, unanimously elected to the post of Chairman for DCCB. DCC president Karanam Dharma Sri’s nomination was rejected as the PACS he was representing announced a default issue raised by Ganta. The polls turned into a turf war between Ganta and PCC chief Botsa, the strongman from Vizianagaram, who threw in his lot with Karanam.

However, Ganta emerged as a power centre with the backing of the Chief Minister, the bête noire of the PCC chief. However, Ganta has to face a disgraceful situation in another incident. Despite knowing that the party would not consider more than five tickets, he made a futile attempt to recommend youth leader Kasi Viswanath of the erstwhile PRP as an MLC candidate. Botsa got his way with getting his candidate Veerabhadra Swamy. Botsa and Ganta row is turning out to be very interesting.

PURANDESWARI-AVANTI COLD WAR Fissures in the Cong party in the region seem to be widening with leaders openly throwing verbal missiles at one another. Bheemili Congress MLA Avanti Srinivas gave a big shock to CM Kiran Kumar Reddy during his visit to the district, complaining against Minister Purandeswari and openly stated that the ruling party would have disappeared in Jagan’s wave, had not Praja Rajyam party lent its support. It is said that this was all stage manipulated by none other than Minister Ganta, who earlier asked district collector to convince Purandeswari to change her plans in view of Chief Minister’s visit on the same day.

While Ganta feigns ignorance of the incident, Purandeswari went on air at once denying rifts and also hinting at them stating that even if there were any problems within the ‘family’, they would be sorted out among the members. Meanwhile, this seems to have brought a smile on the face of Minister P. Balaraju, who nurses a grievance against Ganta.

OH GOD! THAT’S POLITICS It has been an annual ritual. MP Dr. T. Subbarami Reddy has been holding mega events on the city beach to mark Maha Sivaratri for the past many years now. MERCHANTS WANT MAVURI IN POLITICS Only the other day, the otherwise shy and self-effacing Mavuri Venkata Ramana, CMD, CMR Group, was seen leading the cloth merchants in the city who were protesting against the delay in abolition of Value Added Tax. In fact, it was the second such event in which Mr. Ramana took part, displaying total solidarity with his merchant brethren. Going by the fact that he contributes his mite to many social and cultural causes and his popularity, the merchants wish a man of his stature and calibre should take to politics to better the lot of society.

YET THE AWARD GOES TO… Lack of adequate check-in counters, ATMs, duty-free shops and railway reservation facility are a few of the many problems plaguing the Visakhapatnam Airport. HPCL funds failed to help the airport develop the promised greenery around.

Yet, it bagged the ‘best airport’ award as part of the National Tourism Awards 2011-12. The initiatives taken by local leaders and the airport’s contribution to tourism promotion must have helped it in getting this honour. The award may inspire and motivate officials and staff of the Airports Authority of India to work harder in improving the existing amenities.

CM PITCHING FOR SUPPORT Former cricketer Azharuddin and CM Kiran Kumar Reddy enjoy bonhomie is no news as both of them play on two common grounds - cricket and politics.

Whether Azhar is Kiran’s new ray of hope, is the question on minds of many people now. Dubbing the CM as communal, Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) recently withdrew its support to his government.

Under these circumstances Kiran may field Azharuddin, who right now represents Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) in Lok Sabha, against Owaisi from the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency, which has been an MIM stronghold for the past three decades.

However, neither of them has confirmed nor denied the possibility. While the CM said he would use his ‘good friend’ Azhar’s services, the latter stated that it was purely the High Command’s prerogative. However, it is reliably learnt that Azhar wants to play his political game on his home pitch.

HOTEL WITH NO HOT TALE GMR, obviously, doesn’t want to go the Vijaya Mallya way. He has put the 305-room and Rs. 300 cr Novotel Hotel at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport up for sale to realign his assets. It may fetch him anywhere between Rs. 400 cr and 450 cr. Adopting an asset-light strategy, infrastructure builder GMR Group has been on a propertyselling spree and this is its third property to be put on sale this year.

Though GMR has resorted to this measure to save himself from bank interest, he intends to keep his present projects going. Only last month we reported a similar news of a seven star hotel being put up for sale. Unfortunately, this month too we got a similar story about one more big name in the hospitality industry.

RACQUET TO ITEM After rising to fame in badminton, Indian shuttler Jwala Gutta is now trying her luck at reel world. Often spotted at launch shows, inaugurals of exhibitions and shopping malls, Jwala had already given a hint that she was fascinated by the glamour world. t was a lone woman scribe struggling to get her question across to the panelists and it was again a lone woman on the dais strongly goading the moderator to pay attention to the lady with a question. Well, our attempts met with success only after all the male voices were heard on priority. That was the moment Ms. Suchitra K. Ella, Chairperson of CII Andhra Pradesh State Council and I struck a chord and shared a highly feminine empathy, which turned out to be the preamble to a long conversation in which she emerged as a woman not only of power, but also of positive influence and substance. Partnering with her husband Dr. Krishna M. Ella, she co-founded Bharat Biotech and is the Joint Managing Director of the globally acknowledged vaccines and bio-therapeutics enterprise, the largest of its kind in Asia-Pacific that has dispensed above 1.6 billion doses of affordable vaccines to more than 65 countries.

The state scenario and CII… Our CII AP Chapter is the second largest in the south, touching 500 membership of which Visakha region itself accounts for more than 100 and we have also inaugurated a zonal office in Vijayawada recently to serve the Krishna, Godavari, Prakasam and Guntur corridor.

Though it is not a traditional industrial hub like Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, the state is witnessing a tremendous growth in new and sunrise sectors. It is into pharmaceutical or bulk drug industry for the past 30 years, I-T industry for 20 years and bio-tech industry for 10-15 years. Cement, steel, ports and mining activities are also looking up. The state has great potential, thanks to its long coastline and natural resources.

Her work at CII… We focus on rural urbanization.

Till now we have clusters of industrialization. Uprooting workforce from semi-urban and rural areas, we move them to mega cities leading to unmanageable migration and overcrowded cities. We want all those one million plus towns to have micro, small and medium scale industries, sustaining on local resources, to distribute the economic growth evenly across the country.

Basically Indian women are not financially independent. They have to be mentored and hand-held to become self-reliant. We still have to infuse soft skills and technical training in them.

Difference between the US and India…

In the US the approach is more professional. Your contribution, not you as an individual, is looked at.

An entrepreneur’s journey is not easy there either, as the regulator guidelines are more stringent. But if you have a good idea and can translate it into a product or service, there is no looking back. Here an entrepreneur has to work twice as hard and have a work-life balance.

Success mantra…

Hard work, pure and simple. There are no remote controls. It is real time - no time to pause or rewind.

You have to be with your enterprise 24x7. Courage, sacrifice, learning, teamwork, goal-setting and importantly passion are the ingredients.

I have been associated with CII as its State Council member since 2005 and served as a convener of CSR and Healthcare Panels. My sincere approach and commitment are well rewarded with the privilege of this chair. I could bring in at least four women of high calibre to lead CII panels this year. One of the major contributions I can recall is the support we extended to the Crafts Council of AP in building a working shed for the flood-ravaged weavers.

This effort was partnered with United Way of Hyderabad.

Untapped potential…

We are a country of 500 m. women.

This is a great depository of human resource. Why give it a gender connotation? Even if we can turn one fourth of this strength into a prolific workforce, we can do wonders.

We have moved away from an agrarian economy and only industry can provide jobs for the youth.

Enhancing the family income is not only desirable but also imperative.

Given a chance, blessed with a holistic vision, a woman can perform as good as a man.

The divide between women and men entrepreneurs…

None whatsoever. There is no male or female entrepreneur per se.

I have gone through the same grind and steps like any of my male counterparts. I come from a knowledge and skill-based industry.

So my challenges are similar to those of any man. However, I do agree that a woman has to face a lot more bottlenecks to establish herself in

Our women suffer in silence.

The Nirbhaya incident has jolted the nation awake. This inhuman and barbaric incident should not have happened in a country that has been the seat of many religions and none

Andhra women…

They need to catch up and grow.

Education alone doesn’t help. They have to take those extra steps to climb, learn, adapt and contribute.

Our women are brilliant and smart.

If only they could think out of the box…

Her own philosophy…

I climbed the ladder the hard way.

No short cuts. I am what I am and I let people be what they are without being judgmental. I take only positives from any system I come across. The best I imbibed from my stints in the US is to empower myself and become a better professional and keep up high standards in whatever I do. No job is small for me as I was taught dignity of labour from my childhood. I am not rigid and ready to adapt and learn. I may be casual but am extremely picky about quality.

Work culture…

Passion for work is what I stress on.

In today’s world of competition and commercially-driven education, the youth thinks that job means a pay cheque. They should understand that it is a long career span of two to three decades and there is a vast gap between what you pick up in an educational institution and what you learn at work.

Memorable event…

Which one should I pull out of that huge pile? The launch of our first product REVAC-B (recombinant vaccine) for Hepatitis-B by Bharat Ratna, Dr. A. P.J.Abdul Kalam on 27 Oct 1998 in Hyderabad is the most cherished moment.

The most challenging one was our decision to return from the US that too with two children and with no jobs. We both are risk-takers and first generation entrepreneurs, treading an unknown ground. We pooled in our core competence- his scientific knowledge and passion for technology and my administrative and marketing skills. It clicked despite innumerable hurdles.

Message to the freshers…

Don’t run after success. Give your best. Be consistent and don’t give up.

There are several failures one has to deal with. Get the basic education, work on your own special skills and be cross-functional. Understand the business and its dynamics.

Remember that we may contribute as an individual, but can achieve a goal only as a team.

Personal front I am good at time management and multi-tasking. No running after unproductive activities. I am a very spiritual person though not overtly religious, guided by strong principles and family values. I am a big fan of Carnatic and classical music, travelling around the world and reading. That is how I unwind. I enjoy the company of friends and family.

Not much of partying for me.

My daughter Jalacheri, son-in-law Aditya and son Raches are studying to become medical doctors.

Delightful Doc he personifies versatility. Behind her well known image of a psychiatrist and socialite, lies a creative being. Her acumen extends to the details of batik painting, stitching and Bonsai tending. That’s just not all, she is a trained classical dancer who has given over 30 stage performances and is also involved with Vizag’s first English theatre group called Alter Ego and staged four plays. Not lagging behind in academics, she was a ranked student throughout her studies and bagged gold medals in anatomy, gynaecology and physiology. Ranita Ray discovers similar other interesting facts and facets of this dynamic lady whom the city knows as Dr. Rekha Dutt.

Foundation: Hailing from a business family settled in Bangalore for many generations, Rekha chose to deviate into a different stream. Her first exposure to the field of medicine came through her maternal aunts, who were doctors. During her final year in Bishop Cotton Girls School, she came under the influence of the books ‘The Passions of the Mind’ on Sigmund Freud by Irving Stone and ‘The Interpretation of Dreams’ by Freud himself. It was her first encounter with the world of psychiatry. Later she pursued medicine from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum, Karnataka. Her interest in psychology, however, was re-stirred after marriage with Mr. Anand Dutt of Kancharla family. She pursued higher studies in her desired subject in Visakhapatnam. red | april 2013 | 72

Facts file The theory and practical application of her profession are poles apart, admits Rekha.

Hence her first experience in the real world of psychiatry was bewildering, she adds. “It’s a completely diverse science.

While in other streams one needs to monitor certain signs and symptoms; here one has to bring out the symptoms by making the patient comfortable and observe him/her.”

Psychiatry and Woman - better combination?

“If I say so I would upset my male colleagues,” laughs Rekha.

But she also stresses that in certain aspects like patience, sensitivity and empathy, women have an edge over men. Thus a woman psychiatrist is more popular as patients always are happy with the doctor who dedicates more time to them.”

Limitations as a woman “Doctors are always respected, there is no gender bias,” says Rekha. She herself has never faced any disparity.

Current changes With over two decades of experience, she explains that the practice has become more and more challenging. One needs to know that there are a number of factors acting on man’s mind working in IT firms, corporate and public sectors and facing the problems like anxiety to keep up with colleagues or pressure from the boss or even lack of time for personal life. Even students are under a lot of stress to excel in every field. The rising trend of nuclear family has its own sets of issues.

Backup: She gives credit to her parents who supported her throughout, even to the extent of allowing her stay in a hostel, when letting daughters go for higher studies itself was a taboo. She was also given exposure to art forms like Bharatnatyam and sports like tennis. Equally encouraging was her husband. She also enjoys the support of her two understanding children Malvika and Sashank.

Society towards Women Majority of women these days are working and going out.

There is a welcoming change in parents’ approach towards their daughters, their education and subsequently letting them to become self-reliant. However,

similar broadmindedness is still missing when it comes to husbands and in-laws. While the husbands want their better-halves to be typical homemakers; ‘traditional bahu’ is what many in-laws expect their highly educated daughters-inlaw to be. Rekha also adds that such expectations are wrong.

However, she believes the things are changing for the better.

Leisure is for I don’t consider exercising in a gym as a leisure activity, rather it’s must, she says. She loves to cook and meditate. A lot of time goes for bonsai-tending which she says she inherited from her mother. Being a woman, she believes, one needs to be fashionable and up-to-date with latest trends.

Hence browsing shopping malls also fits into her spare time activities.

Parallel processing Like most working women, she says, she plays multiple roles.

She, however, accepts that it is a daunting task; while one role requires a soft approach, the other might require a strict assertion. To deal with such challenging tasks, she allows a little buffer time between different roles and that perhaps is the secret of her success.

Her strength She cannot stand manipulation, unjust behaviour and slackness.

She tries to be honest to herself.

She is also humble enough to admit her mistakes with grace if someone points them out.

Idolize “I idolize any woman who works even after the age of 70,”shares Rekha. She says such women are always inspiring, as they are physically active, mentally strong and keep up with time. That’s what success means to her.

Her definition of social work It should be a joint effort by everyone. It can be financial assistance in the form of donation, charity or helping the needy by active participation. She feels both are equally important. Akin to the Western countries, the procedures of charity in India need to be a bit more streamlined and organized.

She is associated with the Ramakrishna Mission and works for the welfare of children suffering from cerebral palsy. Being a Rotarian, she is also involved in many philanthropic activities.

Advice to women Never ignore your talents and abilities. Don’t hesitate to go out, if the skills require an exposure to the outer world. Strike a balance between your responsibilities at home and your dreams which can be nurtured beyond the four walls; she says no family would raise any objection. Learn to be soft spoken and still get your way.

Bucket list “Thanks to you, I realized I haven't made one yet,” confesses Rekha.

She discovers there is a list of things to learn on her mind, which she hopes to take up one by one.

She wishes to continue her private practice. Teaching is what she plans next. She has a strong urge to write and someday she would like to author a book or at least a manual on small little tips on daily activities or how to deal with certain persons/characters.

She used to be a table tennis champion in her college and she would like to revive it.

Her Thoughts Anything you learn adds to your mind, space-orientation, concepts, and approach towards life.

I am very grateful to my parents who encouraged me to pick up different hobbies; dabbling in different sciences and arts helped me win even the unknown.

Bharatnatyam helped me perceive the dramatic aspect of life and my theatre training helped me look at things with humour.

I have broken the clichéd image that doctors don’t have a social life. I have a very happy personal life, successful professional life and vibrant social life.

But the task at my hand is to make a soft-spoken and overly modest Mr. Vasu Prakash, Director, Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan, to speak of his accomplishments and it was daunting.

The best way is to get another person to illustrate him. That is how Jayshree Hatangadi, Trainer-Consultant and former Director (Indian operations) of School Year Abroad came into the picture. She has been associated with him and his endeavours through the years and instantly bursts out, “Amazing-is what I can say when I think of Vasu. But over a pause I can go on. He is a consummate professional and great leader whose approach to training and detail is astounding. He firmly believes that by building a school you are building an entire generation. He is so open to suggestions that he has replaced bouquets (given as gifts) with saplings and seeds as suggested by a student.

Realising the varied scales of grasping power of the pupils, he prefers to offer them tiny and easily absorbable sops of knowledge. The rapport he enjoys with people who are even remotely connected with the school is incredible.

Foundation...

Sri Prakash was founded by my father Sri. Ch. V. K. Narasimha Rao at Tuni in 1977 and following his footsteps and duly getting trained under him, I established the Vizag school in 2001.

Now I run four schools, including three with hostel facilities.

Goal...

Every student is unique and it is our duty to help him identify his latent talents and hone them. My efforts are directed towards every single child in my institution. I may have big buildings and hundreds of teachers. Thousands of students may pass through my portals but I feel incomplete, even if a single student doesn’t accomplish his set target. I have to find out how I can help him reach his goal and there is no compromise on that front.

These are the ethics and moral values I inherited from my father, who is my friend, philosopher and guide.

Corporate Social Responsibility We launched a mobile classroom initially intended to be a computer education van. However, when a student with a handicapped sibling asked me if good education was only for the healthy, I understood the requirement. I converted it into an AC-fitted mobile classroom for the physically challenged. Our team went from village to village and collected the data of the handicapped children.

We went one step ahead and assessed the type of disability they suffer through a medical camp. We could motivate them to join the classes and ultimately we could integrate some of them into the mainstream. We also interact with municipal schools so that the students can mingle with one another and share their knowledge.

This is what we believe in and make our students realize.

It has to be sound, clear and focused so that these traits trickle down to the bottom of the pyramid.

We strive for an all round development of our students. Primarily they should excel in academics. We have dedicated teachers who are with us right from the inception. Their contribution to build this edifice of repute is worth a mention.

Examination, a spontaneous test or a project- a mode has to be developed to meet this end.

Mr. Prakash is a man of few words.

Yet Ranita Ray gets some interesting glimpses of his personal life.

Family I am married to Madhavi, who right now manages home. Eventually she may join me in running the school. My son Krishna Prakash is studying in 2nd class and also a proud Prakashite.

One thing you like to change in your life I want to improve my time management skills. As the head of this school, I get embroiled in work and lose track of time.

It results in a chain delay.

How were you as a student?

An average performer, interested in sports, especially shuttle and athletics.

What were your most loved and hated subjects?

I was never scared of any subject and hated none. Literature was my favourite.

Any mischief as a student?

No scope! Studying in the school run by my father, we were under constant vigil.

Hence there was little chance to think of any mischief.

Being an educationist, do you have high expectations from your son?

None at all! This is another thing I have learnt from my father, who never set any targets for me and my two brothers.

My son is very young. But I am sure I shall give him absolute liberty.

One teacher/educationalist you idolize?

Dr. C. V. Narasimham, Principal of NSTL School. He is not only my mentor, but my idol too. Till date I seek his advice on all important matters.

If not an educationist, what would you have been?

model-turned-film actress who has endorsed brands like Reliance Trends, Red FM, Coca-Cola, Motorola, Pantaloons, Airtel and PVR Cinemas, was the winner of "Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face” and "Safi Femina Miss Beautiful Skin" in 2008. She has worked in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi films. Launched by Sri K. Raghavendra Rao in a Tollywood romantic musical 'Jhummandi Nadam', Taapsee Pannu made her cinematic debut in 2010. Three years down the line, she has won accolades for her performances in Aadukalam (Tamil), Mr. Perfect and Gundello Godari. Soon to be seen in Chashme Baddoor, her Bollywood debut film, she has portrayed different roles from an Anglo-Indian girl to a traditional Telugu girl and a girl in the neighbourhood. Modelling to films...How was the transition?

It was the usual. I started modelling right from the college days. Later, I went in for the Miss India contest and got a lot of offers to do television commercials. I did some ads down South.

Does modelling boost a star’s image?

It grooms you a little and teaches you how to face a camera and be a public personality.

Something that you would like to share with aspiring actors...

Groom yourself well enough before you enter into this industry. Be mentally prepared to face the world and be a public figure as you and your personal life become the talk at the dining table.

K. Raghavendra Rao, who launched you, is known to have catapulted Sridevi and Jayaprada to fame. Are you poised to reach similar heights?

Both the actresses took a while to reach great heights. Everyone has his/her own USP, and I cannot do what they do or probably they can’t do what I can. I cannot compare my career graph with that of anyone.

A Bollywood debut with ‘Chashme Baddoor’. So has working in Bollywood changed your equations with Tollywood?

Nothing really changed here. I have been working simultaneously in Bollywood and down south also. A lot depends on the response to my Hindi movie. If I get a good response, I will start working in Bollywood as well. But that doesn’t mean that I will uproot myself from the south.

I am already an established star here and obviously don’t want to give up on that and move to something new totally.

Do tell us something about the working style of directors up north.

I just worked with one of them, so I can’t really comment. David Dhawan was as quick as directors down south. The working pattern was not really much different from the south.

Who are your favourite directors in the south?

There are so many. But one director I want to work with, at least once in my life is Mani Rathnam Sir. red | april 2013 | 88

How do you see your career graph after ‘Shadow’?

I don’t keep any expectations. You never know what is going to work. So, I just take it as it comes.

On Chashme Baddoor Your Bollywood debut is a remake of a successful 80’s film. How do you feel?

I feel really good about it. I am working on a script that is already tried and tested.

Any words of wisdom from Rishi Kapoor?

Just by looking at him and observing, we can learn a lot. He does a lot of character preparation for his role and plenty of homework.

A funny experience on the sets....

It is a fun movie and from the first to the last frame, we are just laughing. Every day of the shoot was like a party.

PERSONAL DIARY What attracts you first when you want to sign on the dotted line...the story, hero, or anything else?

The first thing that attracts me is the character I am expected to play - what am I doing in the movie, how much difference can I make in the script.

You shot some real steamy scenes.

How was the experience?

In the beginning when I heard my part, I was apprehensive. It was very comfortable on the set, with only a limited number of people there at that time. My co-star Aadhi was really a big support.

Your toughest competitors in the industry.

I don’t see anyone as my competitor right now.

Directors come to me with roles and tell me that I alone can do it. I don’t want to be 1, 2, 3...I don’t consider anyone apart from myself as competition.

How was working with Lakshmi Manchu?

We were together just for a few shots.

She is one of the best actresses I have known.

She is even more brilliant as a producer. She is like a one-woman army and I learnt a lot of things from her, including the fact that even if you are there for five scenes in the movie, they should be so powerful that people don’t forget you.

On Gundello Godari Your role as Sarala has created a lot of buzz. How do you feel?

Obviously, I am feeling really good. I was actually scared before the movie released as the Telugu audience is sensitive to how a heroine is portrayed. I have been seen as an angel-like heroine and suddenly I am doing something that is not mainstream.

You portrayed a radically different personality, a character with negative shades. What is going on in your mind?

I am going to be more than happy if I get another character as strong as Sarala. If I get something that is really interesting, I will do it again. red | april 2013 | 89

On Shadow You are working with Venkatesh for the first time. Any memorable moments.

He is a thorough gentleman. He takes care of the whole unit. You can learn so much from him in each and every shot. People don’t know that he has a witty side to him. He has amazing one-liners to say.

How has the movie shaped up?

I have watched the songs and I can say that it is the biggest treat; fantastic styling, stunning locations and amazing choreography.

What is your most memorable moment in the industry?

There are so many. The most recent one was when I was at a junction in my car and a shopkeeper ran up to me and banged on the window. He kept on saying that my performance in the movie Gundello Godari was super. That day I felt that I had touched people with my performance.

How was your first audition?

I really did not know whether I did that well or not. I was selected but was not able to do the movie due to some reasons.

How did you feel on your first take?

I don’t know about myself. But my unit people made me feel very good and welcomed and they all clapped.

Mum’s darling or dad’s pet?

I am not an over-pampered kid. They are confident that I can handle my life on my own.

It was from a journalist in the industry. He met me just once and spoke for about 10 minutes.

Volvo, known for its high quality safety and luxury comfort in its range of cars, is pinning its hopes on this car to bring in the maximum number of volumes. The five-door, five-seat premium car sports SUV-enthused design details with a rugged look such as anodized, black high-gloss frame around the greenhouse, the black rear-view mirror housings and the sleek rails floating over the roof. The Sony group has described the PlayStation 4 Eye (Ps4) as a supercharged PC and the foundation of their next generation platform. is gigantic stature of the Managing Director of the most sought after Hospital in the city notwithstanding, Dr. Gurava Reddy is down-to-earth and puts you at ease with his humour. You just cannot help being mesmerized by this uber cool doctor, wearing a boho-chic bandana with funny quotes printed on it.

An MD, a chief surgeon, faculty, founder-member of many organizations, a radio jockey, a writer - he just keeps adding more and more feathers to his hat.

It is interesting to see this much sought after person pass joy to all, including his patients.

He is also the most talked about writer of humour books, with Guravayanam being the popular of them all. Humour is probably the essence of his life.

The founder of KIMS Hospital and the Indian Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons, he certainly has a planned life and with a single mantra Be Happy!

Did you always want to be in this field?

Yes, I always wanted to be in the field of medicine and to be precise I had a set goal of becoming a doctor. The white coat that the doctors don is the classiest dress ever and I always wanted to wear one. It was not a cakewalk though; I had tried almost four times to get a seat in a medical college.

How did you zero in on joint replacement?

I had no dramatic history of becoming a joint replacement doctor. It is just that I eliminated the branches of medicine that I did not like and I ended up becoming an Orthopaedician! In my childhood days, my father always told me that my brain was in my knees and here I am a knee replacement surgeon. Moreover in England this field is the most glamorous one; so that added a little bit of glamour quotient as well.

What are the best aspects of your job?

To put it in a single sentence I make people stand on their feet. That I think is the highest degree of satisfaction any doctor or for that matter any human can get. Getting people rid of the wheelchair and making them walk is very heartening and I experience a tangible feeling of satisfaction. Lastly, I am always blessed by my patients for having brought back their quality of life.

How many have you treated till now?

Randomly, I think the count would be more than 10,000 surgeries.

What are the challenges you faced?

Doctors are always fighting against odds. In India, especially the medical field is like a tightrope walk. Firstly the patients come to you late and they have limited resources to fulfill their requirements. But they expect cent percent results. That is a challenge.

The most rewarding experience.

Hmmm‌ the most rewarding experience is definitely the happiness I saw in the eyes of a girl who had been on the wheelchair for about 15 years and was able to walk on her own post surgery. She got married and settled down.

How does it feel being the MD of one of the most prestigious hospitals in the city?

Well...it is a mixture of emotions. Of course it feels great to be the Managing Director, but at the same time, it is very challenging with the daily hurdles that I have to face. It is depressing at times when things go wrong and sad at times as death still disturbs me. But most of the time, it is a very good feeling that I am able to bring about a difference in people’s lives. red | april 2013 | 98

Advice is like castor oil - easy to give but difficult to take! The only thing I can advise anyone is to be happy always.

Your future aspirations.

If it would be possible I want to look like Hrithik Roshan! Jokes apart, I would want Sunshine to touch the sky and make people realize that we are not here just for money but to serve them. Financial benefit is an obvious byproduct of success.

Tell us a little bit about your background I come from a middle class family and we are a very closely knit value based family. My wife is a gynaecologist, son Adarsh is pursuing his MS and daughter Kavya is also into medicine.

How is the field of knee and joint replacement evolving?

This field is evolving by leaps and bounds and I am sure a day will come when a joint could be fixed into your body for a lifetime. It is improving manifold with new surgical techniques and improved materials.

Difficulties or limitations?

Cost. This kind of treatment is expensive for a common man. Secondly the psyche of the patient plays a very vital role as they do not realize the importance of their health and wait for the problem to turn worse till they practically become immobile that makes the treatment procedure even more complicated.

What is the degree of job satisfaction here?

Always on the peak; I enjoy every minute of it.

Where do you differ from other surgeons?

I am not a run-of-the mill surgeon. I must connect with my patient. Humour is one of my best friends and always helps me break the ice.

I am a human being first and then a doctor unlike a few people.

Cherished moments The most cherished moments of my life are the birth of my kids and the affair I had with my wife.

What is major difference in UK and India on a medical basis?

Abroad they follow a very holistic practice and treat the patient as a person, unlike India where the patient is treated like a case.

What made you shift from the United Kingdom to Hyderabad?

Why not? India is a challenging place throwing new challenges at me every single day. I love India and wanted to be here because of the job satisfaction. In UK I would just be another nut in the whole system. red | april 2013 | 99

I am a Radio Jockey and a writer as well. I have my priorities set and follow them religiously and that is how I juggle all these. I am a workaholic from Monday to Friday. Saturday is a ‘me and myself’ day where I do things that I like and want to do and Sunday of course is a family day.

What do you do to appease an upset partner?

The super hit, tried and tested formula of going on your knees is what I do. But I don’t get a chance to do so because my wife is a very balanced person and we know our spaces professionally and personally.

How do you manage time for each other?

Sunday is our day and we spend great quality time together mostly watching humour shows and sitcoms and talking to our children.

Tell us something about the “Little Soldier” Kavya.

Kavya acted in the movie Little Soldier when she was 3 years and won the national best child artiste award from the President of India and made me proud.

Life partners should never be sailing in the same boat, what is your take on it?

I do not subscribe to that. We have made our consensus decision and are perfectly fine with it.

What is the idea of an ideal vacation for you?

Switzerland, Switzerland, Switzerland and nowhere else in the world. God surely is from that country and that is why it is blessed with peace, tranquility, scenic beauty, Alps and what not.

Tell us a few unknown traits of your multi-faceted personality.

I always wanted to direct a movie.

What is your interpretation of luxury?

Nice breeze, no mosquitoes, greenery everywhere around you, a beautiful lake in front of you, birds chirping, instrumental music in the background, a humour book in your hand and something to munch on - PRICELESS! On a romantic date.

It would surely not be a candlelight dinner!

It would be an outing to a place she likes, buying her a brownie icecream from Melting Moments (her favourite) or buying her a sari.

Do you blame the modern lifestyle for medical issues in youngsters?

Yes, every action has a reaction - like excess texting causes arthritis of fingers, talking on phone in a slant position causes spondylitis, wearing heels causes heel pain; the list just doesn’t get over. Most important is that you become unsocial to such an extent that you SMS a person sitting right beside you!

What is your mantra in life?

Be happy! When you do not have enough time to love, where do you have time to hate anyone?

Ugadi Pachchadi Ingredients Raw fresh mango (cleaned, dried, finely chopped along with skin) - 1 cup Margosa flowers (Neem flowers) - 1 tbsp Grated jaggery - 1 cup Fresh finely chopped coconut pieces (optional) - 1 tbsp Tamarind paste 3/4 tbsp Red chilli powder and salt to taste

Method Mix all ingredients to form a sauce like consistency. For thinner chutney, add very little water (2/3 tbsps). You can also add small pieces of sugarcane, ripe banana, putanaala pappu (roasted channa dal) along with the above ingredients.

Boorelu Ingredients Channa dal - 1 cup Cardamom powder to taste Oil to fry Rice - 2 cups Sugar - 1 cup Urad dal - 1 cup

Method Soak the Urad Dal and rice overnight. Grind it and add a pinch of salt.

Cook the channa dal. If any excess water is there drain it out and then mash it.

Transfer it to a wok, put it on heat, add sugar or jaggery with cardamom powder.

Stir continuously till it thickens. Remove it from the heat and keep it aside to cool.

Apply little ghee on your fingers and make small balls of the batter and keep it aside. Heat oil for deep frying. Dip the dal balls in the batter and with a tablespoon put the dipped balls into the oil and fry until they are light golden brown. It’s ready to serve.

GIM has MoU with HDFC Bank, Pantaloon and National Stock Exchange to offer joint certification programmes for the students of MBA. Recently, the institute became the first B-School in South India to sign an MoU with India’s leading Stock Exchange, National Stock Exchange (NSE) to offer Financial Markets as specialization for MBA and BBM students.

The institute accepts scores of CAT, XAT, MAT. CMAT, and GMAT for admissions of the students into PG programmes. The institute accepts UGAT or GAT for admission into Undergraduate Programmes. For those who do not have any of these test scores, the institute conducts its own entrance test namely GIM Online Test (GOT).

Candidates having minimum of 50% aggregate marks in the qualifying exam are eligible to apply online at www.gitam.edu/gim.

Since GIM follows rolling admissions, candidates should apply well in advance to secure admission in the allotted seats.
