News from your local councillor Cr Wendy Boglary

Dear

Residents,

Thank you to everyone for your contributions towards making Redlands Redlands!

Where else can you find such a beautiful natural environment with bush, bay and beach, and with such a passionate, energetic community.

We have volunteers who donate thousands of hours valued at millions across our city: bushcarers, wildlife carers, drivers for transportation, Meals on Wheels, business chambers of commerce, people who collect rubbish on their walks, a most active arts community, groups for social isolation, Night Ninjas and others for the homeless.

Then there are our Scouting and Guide groups, surf lifesavers, sporting clubs, community groups, numerous charities, churches and school P&Cs, and heritage groups including our Redlands Coast Museum.

Peace and goodwill

And these are just the ones I can presently think of that I work with within our area! No doubt many more deserve a huge shout out.

You all put the heart in Redlands and we are so grateful.

Congratulations also to all our school leavers. I wish you all the best and lots of adventures on the pathways you chose.

And also best wishes to all the school leaders (pictured are the leaders for

A very Merry Christmas to everyone and thank you again for everything. Have a happy season and a safe 2026.

In August this year we celebrated ‘Victory in the Pacific’ and the intriguing story of the part locals and the former WWII Radio Receiving Station at Birkdale Community Precinct played in relaying this long-awaited message – “the war has ended”.

To commemorate this 80-year anniversary, the Rotary Clubs of Wellington Point and Capalaba are installing a Peace Pole in the Wellington Point Village Green during a Christmas Carol afternoon on Saturday 6 December from 4pm to 7pm.

Night Ninjas regularly join with Rotary for a pancake morning with Birkdale Men’s Shed. To celebrate community, peace and Christmas, please join us for a fun community event on 6 December with music, pancakes, face painting, messy play, free picture books for young children, and wonderful community carol singing.

Wellington Point Village traders will have their Christmas lights up, so please have a stroll and help judge which business has the best ‘Village Christmas Lights’ for 2025.

Working together for our community’s safety

As a community we need to assist police by reporting hooning, anti-social behaviour or any suspicious activity. The police rely on community reporting and crime data to support police responses. If the activity is not reported then the police do not know and there is no record. That means it is not added to the area’s crime statistics, which they can then use to assist them to see where and when activities are occurring – and also, importantly, to advocate for resources for our area.

When police have a QP Report number they can work with Council to access our cameras, such as the ones at Wellington Point Reserve.

There also is a very constructive initiative called the Community Camera Alliance, which is an opportunity for residents and businesses to register their CCTV systems with the police, particularly if the cameras face the road. Find more information online at www.police.qld.gov.au

I remain committed to supporting a safe community through a range of crime reduction and community safety initiatives, which includes our regular meetings with police.

Our ‘Coffee with a Cop’ morning in Wellington Point in September was a great success. Local residents, as well as myself, State Member for Oodgeroo Amanda Stoker and Mayor Jos Mitchell, took the opportunity to chat with police officers. Crime Stoppers Volunteers were also there with some very valuable information.

How to help

The most powerful tool to support our police is YOU. Report crime here:

• 000 - life threatening or urgent matters

• Policelink 131 444 or 13HOON. For all non-urgent matters or you can report online via Policelink

• Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 to remain anonymous.

It’s all in the pipeline

Portfolios were introduced for Councillors this term and I am pleased to be Portfolio Councillor for Finance and also Water and Waste Infrastructure.

Water and waste infrastructure is Council’s largest asset and the most important as the health of the city depends on this asset.

With 1325 km of water reticulation pipes, 1223 km of underground wastewater pipes, 137 sewerage pump stations and seven wastewater treatment plants, these assets are valued at approximately $896 million, which is why I have always kept a keen eye on this area.

For more than a decade and at each annual budget, I have mentioned my concerns regarding our city’s aging infrastructure from a health and

safety perspective, plus the enormous financial implications.

Other major citywide projects that have commenced are the revising of our Corporate Plan and the City Plan.

The City Plan is the blueprint for what is allowed where in the city, such as high density, residential, commercial, protection of valuable areas etc. It is an extremely important planning document and I encourage everyone to have their feedback included in the community consultation.

Please keep up to date with these engagement opportunities through my Facebook page so you know how you can have your say. Given the importance of getting the City Plan right, please feel free to contact me direct as I am happy to talk to groups.

Lighting the way for local sport

There are some exciting sporting projects happening locally.

New lighting will be installed at the EGW Wood cricket grounds and at the Redlands Softball Park, Ormiston.

Both clubs will be able to hold larger competitions, such as nationals and international games, which will bring larger crowds and more visitors to Redlands Coast – a win for sport and a win for the local economy.

There also is a possibility grounds could be used as Olympic training facilities in 2032, which would be a wonderful coup for our clubs.

At the cricket ground, the work will involve four new 30m light towers using 18 lights on each pole to adequately light the playing field.

Also at EGW Wood Sporting Fields, the existing netball courts will be resurfaced to support both netball and pickleball. Works also include renewing eight netball goal posts and the installation of a drinking fountain.

The clubs there have been working together and have seen increased user numbers, as well as a huge diversity in ages now among the pickleball users.
