Welcome to Country

An initiative to showcase emerging and established First Nations Artists, Makers and Culture by sharing knowledge, ideas, and wellbeing through multimedia and storytelling.

Our MMEIC Elders invite you for morning tea, a bush tucker lunch and a yarn each day of the 2023 Straddie Arts Trail.

The MMEIC team lead with warm encouragement by shining a light on the importance of listening, appreciating, and understanding our individual and collective voice.

STOP 1 introduces island visitors to our island culture, values, stories, heritage, fears, and ambitions.

MMEIC Elders at Stop 1 will host various speakers and discussions throughout the trail including,

Artist Richard Bell’s | Embassy

Embassy | consists of an ongoing and mutable installation made up of a tent and protest placards that play host to political discussions, lectures, film screenings and displays of other artists’ work. Richard Bell has kindly shared his new video installation (Bulldozer Scene No Tin Shack, 2022) about the demolition of his house in 1967 when he was 14 years old. The looped projection imitates the gesture of the man who had stopped the advance of a tank in Tiananmen Square in 1989. In the video, the teenage boy stands still, and, despite his resistance, the bulldozer destroys the shack, leaving a pile of rubble.

iam: a Jewellery Maker

‘Gindi’ in my Jandai language means something good. I put a lot of love, time and effort into the making process to create a small handmade treasure for you, a memento of my beautiful island home. I use as many natural items as I can that I gather from country to enhance the design of each pendant. It is my hope that they bring you joy and connect you to Straddie’s marine life and native flora and fauna. My pendants reflect my fresh and salt water Quandamooka country - I am a Goenpul Nunukul Ngugi maker of Terrangee.

I have had the privilege of growing up on Country - Minjerribah and this is where my inspiration comes from. Quandamooka people have cared, protected and lived at one with our Country since time began. I aim to bring beautiful Bush and Sea Country onto fabric and into homes for all to enjoy and appreciate.

iam: a Potter

I’m a potter and have been working with clay for about 7 years since moving to Straddie. I love working on the wheel making large functional pieces for everyday use, and enjoy throwing pieces loosely before altering them by hand to produce an informal, imperfect effect. My style evolves continually and I aim to keep each piece unique with as much life as possible that can be used and enjoyed on a daily basis.

I fell in love with pottery after moving to the island seven years ago and joining our community pottery group. I have worked with both wheel thrown and handbuilt ceramics however my greatest love is creating beautiful and functional pieces that have been embellished using the technique of sgraffito to carve imaginative patterns or creatures that I observe in nature.

Zoë Maskell

iam: an Embroidery Artist

I use embroidery to give life back to second hand or damaged clothes. I start by finding a piece of clothing, then using the colours as inspiration to match it with a native Australian plant or animal. I will design the pattern by hand in a sketchbook, then transfer the design to the clothing, select my colours and begin stitching. Afterwards a piece of clothing is created that has many more years of life, and is a conversation starter to begin the discussion around how we can use slow fashion to build a better world for ourselves and our native creatures.

Kathy Townsend

iam: a Gyotaku Artist

I practice the ancient Japanese art of gyotaku, while giving it a distinctly modern spin. Painting non-toxic acrylic paint directly onto the fish, I gently lay imported shoji paper over the animal and gently rub. The paper is peeled back and an exact replica of the fish is created. Once dried, I paint in the eye and do line work using a combination of water colours and pen and ink. The final step is to add gold, silver or copper leaf, to replicate the metallic shine the fish have when live. It is particularly important to me that no fish were caught specifically to make this art. I consider that each print is a small commemoration to an animal who has provided the ultimate sacrifice.

Clay is the medium I use in response to the unique and varied environment of this island, Minjerribah.

Tania Budd

iam: a Visual Artist & Maker

Tania is a visual artist and maker, based in the Redlands, a part of beautiful Quandamooka Country.

“I value when the process of making art is as organic as nature itself by painting, making marks directly on the canvas laid upon on the earth, or weaving and stitching with natural found fibres from site. When art and nature converge, is where our inner and outer worlds meet. My works become a home for these felt sensory experiences as they take form through mark making, painting, canvas vessels, weaving and fibre art.”

“When I’m immersed in landscapes, with art mediums in hand, I make marks or gestures, translating my sensory experience into a tangible form. This helps me to absorb a place, make meaning and sense of it, offering a kind of “homecoming” to a picture much bigger than myself.”

For many years Tania and her family have been blessed to rest, soothe the soul, grow and heal on Minjerribah. Having facilitated women’s retreats, and making art in communion with the beautiful spirit of Quandamooka country over many years, her art making practise, along with her friendships and creative collaborations on Minjerribah and Southern bay Islands, continue to open and deepen - becoming even more sacred.

Henk Dogger

iam: a Blacksmith

Henk was apprenticed as a metalworker in 1972 and has worked as a blacksmith, fitter, welder, mechanic, technician, & engineer. Throughout his working life, Henk has facilitated the training of dozens of apprentices and can therefore legitimately call himself “master tradesperson”. Henk’s mantra is that well known Methodist verse from the Furphy water carts - “Good, better best, never let it rest, until your good is better, and your better, best” and that catchphrase has guided Henk’s working life since he first heard it while working at “Brownie’s Blacksmiths” in Bairnsdale, Victoria, back in the 1970s.

Finished with working for others, Henk built himself a workshop to house his extensive set of historic tools at Goompi (Dunwich), on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) using 19th century reclaimed building materials. The corner posts were found “jammed” under the Gateway Bridge after the 2010 floods, and no one knows exactly where they came from or how old they are.

During his fifty years of working with metals, Henk has acquired, and restored, a full set of genuine 19th century tools and equipment. This includes a lathe from the Brisbane Rope Works from 1867, two mid-1800s coke fired forges with hand operated bellows, as well as two anvils also from the mid-1800s. A couple of hundred tongs, fullers, hardies, along with dozens of specialised hammers, are scattered throughout the workshop, many of which were made by Henk for one specific job or another. Each tool has been carefully and meticulously restored to its original functionality by Henk who believes that “there is no point in having a tool that does not work”.

Henk now facilitates blacksmithing workshops and produces unique metal artisan items at “The Blacksmith Shop” using his 19th century tools and equipment, and with the traditional methods and techniques that he has learnt throughout his fifty working years.

The only change is that Henk no longer uses fossil fuels (coal or coke) and now uses renewable charcoal as his fuel. This charcoal is sourced from sustainable regrown forests in the Dalby, Queensland area which were planted exclusively for this use.

The North Stradbroke Island Arts and Pottery Group Inc. was established in 1988 to provide opportunities for our local community to participate in arts and cultural activities. Our club fosters appreciation of community by drawing together and supporting members wishing to explore and learn new creative skills within a welcoming and kind environment.

Pottery is the perfect way to integrate self-care and creativity into your daily life, maintain one’s wellbeing, and alleviate anxiety, depression and stress. Pottery connects us back to the earth. Simply playing with clay and stimulating the pressure points in our hands can have therapeutic benefits. Clay also provides a natural way to connect with body and breath – the malleability and immediacy of the material naturally integrates the mind-body connection, something much needed in our often-hectic lives. Take a moment during the Arts Trail to Play With Clay in the old pottery’s garden! It’s fun for all ages. Browse our little shop of pottery goodies.

I live on a curious island that turns its back on the city and looks out over the coral sea. My island world affords me the absolute pleasure of solitude and exists as a vast textural landscape with “me”, a single figure, surrounded by it. My work captures these moments, the grandeur and beauty of the natural world and its elements. I wake early to experience beaches, freshly swept by the sea tides, or swim late in our inland lake, watching as the day closes its eyes to find peace in the stillness of dusk. Using clay and my unique finds I create work, both decorative and utilitarian, which incorporate my curiosity, the vistas, the moments, and natural elements of this curious island. In my current work I look below the sea surface, a place of ultimate solitude and explore the complex design, form, and beauty of the underwater ecosystem.

Nestled into its beautiful bushland setting, east of Dunwich, you find The North Stradbroke Island Golf Club. Over many decades the Club has been developed and lovingly cared for by its volunteers, earning it several award nominations as one of the best small country golf courses in Australia. This year the club is hosting the inaugural Minjerribah Photography Awards which will culminate in an exhibition of the winning photos. The competition’s Open Section prize will honour Minjerribah elders and North Stradbroke Island Golf Club founding members, the late Aunty Margaret and Uncle Pat Iselin. Aunty Margaret was the first golfer to score a hole in one on the 12th Hole, just after the course opened. Margaret Iselin was a long-standing chairwoman of the Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders in Council and she and her husband Pat were instrumental in opening people’s hearts and eyes to the depth of Aboriginal knowledge and culture in the Island community. The course which is home to an abundance of wildlife including Eastern Grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, stone curlews and glossy-black cockatoos, is renowned for its majestic and ancient trees — and it is those TREES which this year form the theme for the photography competition.

We are Ang and Stu of Stradbroke Island Photography. With over ten years working as professional photographers on the island as photographers, filmmakers, artists, storytellers, and authors, we bring a diverse range of skills to our work and through the Straddie Arts Trail, we have the opportunity to unleash our creativity and celebrate the island’s natural wonders. This year, our focus is on combining art and photography, experimenting with photographicbased alternative processes and multimedia. After months of falling down the rabbit-hole of experimentation and reimagining our college days, we have decided on techniques, which combine our imagery with printmaking - Polaroid emulsion lifts and gel printing with image transfers and paint. Each piece is unique and although we are never quite certain how (or if) they will turn out, it has been fun getting there.

Jennifer Hillhouse

iam: a Potter & Photographer

Jennifer Hillhouse is a potter who enjoys making functional work to be loved in the home. Her goal when making is to consider the harmony of a piece, and how to create something that “sings”. Finding the balance between its form, weight, character & story.

Inspired by time spent at Straddie, her work resonates seaside meanderings and she often uses pumice and shells collected on beach walks. Also a photographer, Jennifer tries to capture the light, flora and textures of the rock formations at Straddie. These pictures act as reference photos for her pottery practice but also become artworks in their own right.

I love the feeling of clay. The pieces taking shape and the alchemy of glazing combine in a never ending learning journey of shapes, textures and colours! From shells, crabs and barnacles in the littoral zone, fabulous marine creatures offshore, and gnarly pandanus palms, banksias and grasstrees, source material abounds. My grandparents came to the island in the 1930’s and Mum has passed on her deep love of this place in all its beauty to me and my sisters. Experiencing the magic of clay for the first time at Dunwich school in the 1970s, and continuing to learn in ceramic arts with my husband Bernie and island friends, the beautiful adventure continues.

On most days when at home you’ll find me at the wheel, throwing cups, mugs, bowls & dishes, or handbuilding with a variety of clays. I enjoy incorporating delicately beautiful Japanese underglaze transfers or experimenting with different glaze colours & techniques. I have been at the wheel for over 30 years and love to create functional pottery wares & jewellery. I never tire of the mystery & uniqueness of glaze combinations which produce intriguing results. I’ve lived at Amity Point (Pulan Pulan) for most of my life & as an avid bushwalker, hiker & photographer, I endeavour to recreate the colours of seascapes, bushscapes & coastlines in my glazing process.

My joy comes from teaming these with amazing bases. These bases may be created from driftwood from the island, converted pots or candleholders, reclaimed timber or upcycled pieces that take my eye. I work in collaboration with my partner Dan Cassidy, the base maker.

Mandy’s birthplace Taiwan holds the world’s largest collections of traditional Chinese art and cultural pieces, saved from the destructive communist cultural revolution.

There are over 15,000 official temples in Taiwan, holding works depicting gods, folk heroes, animals, nature, and the beauty of Earth.

Visiting temples as a child awakened her cultural and artistic ancestral threads through master artworks communicating the era, people, places, and circumstance.

When practicing ceramics, through an Australian interpretation, she reflects on her encounters with the masterful beauty of Chinese art works.

Her current works embody the confluence of the ecological state of the Earth and the artisanal spirits of her ancestors; culminating in a journey of observation, expression, learning and self-discovery.

Her works have been selected as finalists for several awards and are exhibited in national and local galleries and private collections.

Jennie Truman

iam: an Artist

I am an island artist using paint and pencil to create images of my visual and sensual relationship with my island surroundings. The ever changing seascapes, rocky headlands, dunal grasses and windswept sands and inland creeks and bay mudflats are my inspirations. I use these landscapes to map the changing seasons and the birds and animals which migrate through it.

Living within the seasons on the island has always been the background of how and when I paint. Following the light and shade on the water, the cloud formations and the animal movements are really the keystones to what I see in my art, expressing the changes in colours and texture with acrylic paint in the summer and then working in pencil and ink for finer detailed work of mapping the rocks, shells and fish on paper in the winter.

The Point Lookout Headland is a sacred place.

Since 2017, local Quandamooka Elders and community have been trying to stop the proposed development of a whale centre which would display whale bones on the headland at Point Lookout.

In February 2021, in the spirit of the Aboriginal Embassy (an ongoing political action started in Canberra in 1972), the Quandamooka Truth Embassy was established as a last resort to preserve the cultural heritage of North Stradbroke Island’s Point Lookout and prevent the incoming infrastructure of a whale mall that would house the bones of one of the largest whales to wash up naturally on Stradbroke shores. Visit and gain understanding to the cultural significance of The Headland and why our community wish for this sacred area to be protected.

Discover Stradbroke is pleased and proud to partner with the Straddie Arts Trail for the next year. The organisers have a long term vision for the trail and we all see it as being a permanent year round offering in the coming years. Our supremely talented island artists provide residents and visitors with a unique window into our diverse community.

“Art” encompasses so many of the activities that island locals embrace to express ourselves be it music, painting, pottery, photography, graphics, weaving, jewellery making, cooking and the list goes on and on. Straddie “artists” originate from all corners of the island community and as such they are a glue that binds us together.

Holidays on the island have always been, and will always be, about family, and it is the ‘unpretentiousness’ that appeals and is most certainly the reason people visit again and again. Developing and supporting our artistic community will strengthen our community in the most sustainable way.

We look forward to seeing you out and about in August as we shine a light on everything that is wonderful about Straddie!
