Natural Wonders

As the gateway to the beautiful North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, and internationally significant wetlands and conservation areas, Redlands Coast will open your eyes to a world of awe right on Brisbane’s doorstep.

Uncover our top seven natural wonders, and experience nature at its finest on Redlands Coast.

MORETON BAY MARINE PARK

Stretching from Bribie Island in the north to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands of Redlands Coast, Moreton Bay Marine Park is one of the largest estuarine bays in Australia. Famous for its rugged coastlines, abundant wetlands, and array of outdoor activities, as well as six of the world’s seven sea turtle species, three species of dolphin and the shy dugong, this dazzling tapestry is a must-do experience for nature enthusiasts. From sailing and kayaking to snorkelling and diving, it’s up to you how you want to explore.

MINJERRIBAH BEACHES

The long stretches of golden sands on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), the world’s second-largest sand island, are some of the best beaches in Australia. In fact, the spectacular north-facing Cylinder Beach has been placed at No.6 on the list of Top 10 Beaches in Australia for 2024, as announced by Tourism Australia. The patrolled beach is popular with families and as a pictureperfect location for weddings. Keen surfers also love Cylinder, as well as Main Beach, and kids will love to search in the hidden rockpools on Deadmans and Frenchmans beaches.

FRENCHMANS BEACH POINT LOOKOUT

GORGE WALK

Another joy on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) is the impressive coastal boardwalk and must-do Gorge Walk at Point Lookout (Mulumba). This picturesque trail (one of the most postcard-worthy destinations on Redlands Coast) features ocean views where it’s common to spot dolphins, dugongs, turtles, manta rays and other marine life frolicking in the ocean. In the winter, this headland destination where the gorgeous 1.2km Gorge Walk twists its way around the rocky outcrops, offers some of the best land-based whale watching in Australia. As you wander, keep an eye out for a few of the 40,000 humpback whales that annually pass by from May to November.

BROWN LAKE (BUMMIERA)

Also on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) is Brown Lake which takes its name from the tannin in leaves of the surrounding paperbarks and tea trees. It has a compelling cultural history spanning generations and is a favourite among visitors looking for the optimal spot to swim, picnic, or kick back and relax.

PEEL ISLAND (TEERK ROO RA

NATIONAL PARK)

Find your wild side on the uninhabited, heritage-listed Peel Island with invigorating waters, pristine beaches, and shady camp sites. There is no ferry service to the island so you will need to charter a boat and take everything you need to swim, snorkel, fish and stay, or book a luxury sailing experience.

KING ISLAND (EROBIN)

‘Walk on water’ across the spectacular low-tide sand bridge from Wellington Point (Cullen Cullen) to the tiny uninhabited King Island. A Redlands Coast signature experience, King Island is full of natural wonder, history and one of the most unique walks in southeast Queensland. It’s an easy 2km return walk – ideal for kids as they can paddle along the way and spot a variety of wildlife. Be sure to return before the tide comes in.

COOCHIEMUDLO ISLAND (GOOCHIE MUDLO)

Surrounded by calm waters, shallow beaches and mangroves, with bushland and protected wetlands in the middle, Coochiemudlo (meaning ‘red rock’) is an incredibly diverse island. It is a small treasure waiting to be explored. Spend a whole day here, stopping for lunch at an island eatery or pack a picnic.

Coastal Adventures

RANGER STACEY

My five fave Straddie sea creatures

Stacey Thomson joined Redland City Council’s Environment and Education team in April 2021 as Principal Adviser (Community Education). The former host of the long-running, naturethemed TV show Totally Wild, is a long-time local and has a passion for championing conservation and inspiring people to connect with nature. As a regular visitor to North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), Ranger Stacey has a special fondness for the amazing sea life that exists in Moreton Bay and its surrounding waterways. These are her five favourite sea creatures to look out for when you’re on the bay heading to Minjerribah, or when looking out to sea from one of the island’s glorious vantage points.

1. MARINE TURTLES

Did you know that all but one of the seven species of marine turtles in the world can be found off Straddie in Moreton Bay? The most common are green turtles – who can hold their breath underwater for as long as five hours – and loggerhead turtles, both of which are often spotted frolicking around the western coast of Straddie. But we also have leatherbacks, flatbacks, Hawksbills, and Pacific (or olive) ridley turtles. You’ll need to go to the Atlantic Ocean to find the other type of turtle – the Kemp’s ridley turtle – but, hey, six out of seven is “tur-tally” awesome by me.

Taste of Straddie

Taste of Straddie provides delicious and personalised catering options for all types of groups and events on stunning North Stradbroke Island. Their chefs are dedicated to preparing freshly cooked meals to excite your guests or help power you through a full day of exploring all the wonders the island has to offer.

2. WHALES

Straddie really has become synonymous with whalewatching. The most commonly spotted are the majestic humpback whales as they migrate to and from their southern feeding grounds from May/June to September/October. I am always in awe of the way they can breach so much of their body out of the water, and how they twist and twirl.

3. DOLPHINS

Much smaller than whales, of course, but oh so much cuter, dolphins are an absolute favourite of mine! It is such fun watching from the North Gorge boardwalk as the bottlenose and Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins play, surf and feed in the waves off Main Beach.

4. DUGONGS

These placid, shy mammals live and feed in the seagrass beds in Moreton Bay, but you can occasionally spot them off Point Lookout or around Amity Point. They are plump creatures about the size of a dolphin and with a dolphin fluke-like tail, but small front flippers and large snouts, which give them a cartoonish appearance.

5. MANTA RAYS

Divers and snorkellers can get up close and personal with manta rays at the Manta Bommie dive site, a rocky reef just off Point Lookout. These amazing fish get their name from the Spanish word for cloak or blanket. They visit Manta Bommie to be cleaned by wrasse and can happily wait around for an hour while these smaller fish clean away parasites and dead skin. You can often see them in the clear waters off the southern side of North Gorge. And here’s something you might not know, manta rays are highly intelligent and have long-term memories just like dolphins.

Whale Tail

GELATI AND COFFEE BAR

Whale Tail Gelati & Coffee Bar at Point Lookout has one of the tastiest views on the island. While sitting in the shade under the umbrellas out the front of Whale Tail, you can watch the dolphins and the annual migration of whales as they frolic in Frenchmans’ Bay. Even better, you could also be enjoying a homemade Italian ice cream, or perhaps an espresso coffee, fresh juice or smoothie. Whale Tail Gelati & Coffee Bar has refreshing dairy-free fruit sorbets, and luscious milk-based gelato flavours like iced vovo, dragonfruit and lychee, rosewater meringue and rich chocolate. Locally owned and operated, it is the place to go for a friendly smile and cheery Point Lookout welcome.
