his month’s issue is inclusive of so many great and varied topics that I am spoilt for choice as to what I should highlight in this letter. First, let me explain our pick for the Campaign article. Whilst last month we worked as a nation to raise awareness for breast cancer, this month it’s time to focus on the men in our lives. November is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and we’ve looked at the most popular — and hilarious — hair-raising way that guys can raise money for the cause. Also in this issue, our coverage of the new season’s trends has continued with a look at what make-up you should be wearing now, and how you should be wearing it in the 20 Tips article. For our Wellbeing feature, I put on a brave face and scouted the island for three alternative therapies available in Bahrain. Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed all three and would thoroughly recommend them to anyone bored of the same old massage. Plus, we’ve considered the fast-approaching festive season and interviewed two ladies who are able to make any event you have planned a roaring success. Check out the People section to see which two business-minded women made the cut. Finally, if you are currently experiencing island fever — as so many of us do — then use November’s holidays to escape to a faraway land. We’ve unearthed some secluded destinations in the Travel article. Whatever this month brings for you, I advise you to enjoy the peace before the madness of the festive season which sets in soon! In fact, why not lock yourself in for an evening with a copy of Woman This Month. Perfection.

STAR LETTER Awareness is the Key Well done to the Woman This Month team for the awareness article on cancer prevention in ‘The Fight of a Lifetime’. It was very heartwarming to know that Bahrainis and expats, individuals and companies alike are all joining hands to The Fight support this well-meaning of a Lifetime: cause. I have seen cases of different women who succumbed to this terrifying and life-threatening disease. Three of my neighbours No woman wants to were diagnosed; sadly two cancer” doesn’t alwareceive a breast cancer diagnosis, but getting the facts and ys mean an end. It can be the beginninhearing the words “breast finding hope. g of learning how to fight, of them died and the other D one survived due to early intervention. One of my old college friends constantly takes medications and fights very hard each day for her survival, but luckily things appear to be looking up. Additionally, my late grandmother had a breast removal procedure and I was so amazed by her strength in facing the consequences. October is cancer prevention month and the ongoing awareness campaign programme ‘Think Pink Bahrain’ has given it new meaning because cancer is not something we need to fear anymore. Your article has provided the right information on how to deal with the big C even before it happens. Awareness about the disease is the key that every woman needs to know to prevent it. Facing our fears is next and then doing what we’ve got to do, such as seeking professional help and undergoing examinations based on what type of cancer one has. The loving support of our families and friends will make the burden a little bit easier. Being healthy is one of our main priorities in living a full life. Nobody ever wants it. But we don't have the answer on why certain bad things happen even to good people. So, being aware about the disease is the first big step. Keep it up, WTM! Mira, by email. Wellbeing

Your article ‘Through the Through the Ages Ages’ featured in A September’s magazine was very interesting. I found the dresses and the displays mentioned very alluring and an example of the strength of Parisian fashion. The exhibition seems to be a perfect archive of a woman’s dream wardrobe that marks the six decades of Chloe designs. I think it’s a nice way of giving fans some style inspiration and a history of the brand. Visitors to the exhibition will also get a feel for the brand’s iconic style and a sense of the soft and elegant designs that embody the spirit of Chloe. Anonymous, by email. Feature

By Alison Coldridge

This month, the most fashionable exhibition of them all is launching in Paris. French fashion house Chloé is marking its 60th anniversary by displaying a range of archive pieces at the Palais de Tokyo.

celebration of its heritage, the exhibition is titled ‘Chloé. Attitudes’ will run from September 28 until November 20. Included will be 70 pieces displaying the different styles, trends and fabrics that Chloé has contributed to fashion culture over the years. Since 1952, its legacy of luxury prêt-à-porter clothing has consistently defined how modern women live. Also on display will be a contemporary capsule collection including 16 iconic pieces from each of Chloé’s nine designers. Signature pieces will be featured — from the Maison’s progressive founder Gaby Aghion, to its present creative director Clare Waight Keller. The show aims to be neither nostalgic nor chronological; instead it takes a thematic path through the very best of Chloé’s creativity, pausing at key moments within its history. Iconic looks are presented alongside lesser-known yet equally influential designs. Most importantly, all are on display to the public for the very first time. The exhibition is presented as part of the autumn 2012 season of the Palais de Tokyo “imagine the imaginary,” which explores the artist’s creative process from thought to creation. This theme is at the very heart of the Chloé. Attitudes concept. The exhibition presents the way in which la Maison Chloé has created an identifiable aesthetic and allure that has influenced women’s fashion. The programme is a fitting context for a 60th anniversary of Chloé that celebrates modern femininity. The gallery’s rough, concrete walls are the perfect foil for the sensual showcase inside. One not to be missed!

A Passion for India

Mala Kumar and Shaikha Huda Abdulaziz Al Khalifa

During November a few more lights will shine, candles will glow and intricate patterns of coloured sand will grace the homes of many. Not only will the Kingdom witness the annual Diwali festival but the second instalment of the ‘Irresistible India’ series will continue to showcase the many wonders of India. 14

T

he longstanding relationship between Bahrain and India never ceases to offer up intriguing stories as Mala Kumar, the wife of the Indian ambassador, discovered at a recent Indian concert. Taken aback by how much Shaikha Huda Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, the owner of the Lavender shop, enjoyed the classical music from South India, Mala was determined to speak further with her new friend. While it was clear from their initial conversation that Shaikha Huda had secured an in-depth knowledge of India, as they chatted at Lavender a raft of treasures was revealed. Shaikha Huda acquired her fondness for India through extensive reading of its culture before her first trip to the country 15 years ago. She was amazed not only by the hustle and bustle of Mumbai but also the work ethics of its people. “I then started reading more about Indian history as I wanted to get closer and deeper into the culture by visiting other states,” she says. So, off she went to Kashmir, Delhi and Rajasthan, where she met the late Maharaja. She then moved on to visit Hyderabad and Kerala to experience the bountiful land filled with fruit-bearing trees, tea plantations and exotic flowers. “The land is so fertile that if a seed falls from the fruit you are eating, another fruit will grow,” she jokes. It is this endearing attitude about her that makes you want to learn more about both the woman who radiates a passion for India and about the country itself. It was equally apparent that Mala was both delighted and surprised at the extent of Shaikha Huda’s fascination for her homeland.

wool and make threads. They are so talented,” she says. Working closely with them, Shaikha Huda ensures a high level of quality in the textiles, jewellery and furniture she sells at Lavender. A green thumb in the desert sand There is a sweet story behind the appearance of Bahrain’s first-ever home-grown magnolia. Common in the Himalayan region, this flower usually thrives in the cold conditions of mountainous land. In the hands of a capable grower, a magnolia made its way to Bahrain, grew and finally blossomed after eight long years of careful attention and nurturing. The green thumb behind this story is Shaikha Huda, who brought the flower back from one of her visits to the region. “I was determined for it to grow and I was so happy when it bloomed,” she gleefully recalls. A member of the Bahrain Gardening Society, Shaikha Huda adds this claim to fame along with many awards she has garnered at the Bahrain International Garden Show where she is a committee member as well. It is this passion for gardening that attracted her to India in the first place. “I have been to nurseries all over, enjoyed several garden shows and visited the most beautiful botanical gardens,” she explains to Mala. On another occasion, Shaikha Huda was

reading about a gladiola bulb exporter in a small town close to Darjeeling. Always on the hunt to brighten her own exotic garden at home, she set off to bring some of these bulbs home and, even more importantly, make them grow. Blossom they did along with some gardenia cuts she found in Kerala that she painstakingly nursed until they finally bloomed into fragrant flowers three years later. She also worked her magic with a variety of vegetables, herbs, mangoes, lemons and even avocado trees despite Bahrain’s severe desert climate. Irresistible India Earlier this year, the Indian community held a well-attended spectacle of traditional and contemporary dance as the Kingdom was introduced to the ‘Irresistible India’ series, a programme initiated by Mala. With the expectation of a similar success, the second event on November 15 will feature a renowned Indian dance troupe, who will perform Kathak, a traditional dance form with a contemporary touch. Although she admits she has much more to see and do in India, Shaikha Huda is always inspired by the glittering lights of the Festival of Diwali here in Bahrain, and she looks forward to another cultural evening courtesy of Mala and her ‘Irresistible India’ series.

Lavender

Bringing India to Bahrain With the exciting prospect of finding new treasures on her journeys, Shaikha Huda endeavours to bring a piece of India back home every time she visits. She continues to bring many new artefacts to her boutique in Adliya. Step into Lavender, her warmly decorated home accessories and interior décor store and you will discover handcrafted goods from various countries, primarily India. Boxes and chests of drawers made of hammered metal with skilfully drawn patterns, elaborately framed mirrors, crystal lights and dazzling chandeliers are examples of some of the treasures Shaikha Huda handpicks on her trips. Covering India north to south and east to west, she found that every state produced different styles of work. Going deep into the villages and into the homes of the craftspeople and seeing how the pieces are produced deepened her appreciation for their work. “I watched them shear the sheep, produce www.womanthismonth.com

Lasting Memories By Elma Bartholomew

One year after the launch of her business, Mariam Turki talks to us about the ups and downs of managing the only photo booth in town.

A

few questions hovered over the 26-yearold’s head, much like the props used in her trade, when she and her fiancé brainstormed about starting something different in Bahrain. Once Mariam Turki suggested the introduction of a photo booth, she hasn’t looked back. Issam Kerriou, now her husband, offered his creative skills as a designer and took up the initiative of building this box from scratch. For a device so small, it has travelled to countries like Greece and Qatar for weddings. Today, it has improved several corporate events,

16

| November 2012

birthday parties and bridal showers. “Prior to the launch, I was afraid of how people might receive the concept as it was new to the Kingdom. I didn’t know what to expect,” Mariam admits. “At the end of the very first gig, a wedding to be precise, the photo booth had taken nearly 700 pictures. It was an instant hit.” Aptly christened Elephant photo booth, the name is a play on the saying “elephants never forget”. People love pictures and it is that hankering which Mariam Turki targets. However, she has more things planned for this equipment

apart from being a part of big bashes. “Initially, my idea was to use this as a marketing tool to promote new products and advertise them in a unique way. Unfortunately, corporate clients don’t accept or just don’t understand the concept”, she says. “I wish they would know how to use it to their advantage. Even if it is a new shampoo or any other product, there is always a creative way to apply the photo booth for a campaign.” The beauty of this machine is that it is all about you. Click your own photo after prepping up with a choice of props from those available; see it instantly, on a 50-inch TV screen or an iPad. It advocates spontaneity and pure madness. This results in unforgettable, hilarious moments in life that you can treasure forever. “There is no room for embarrassment as you’re the photographer. A box will not judge you or make you feel uncomfortable,” Mariam says. “People are at ease. They’re lively and often crazy. The idea is not to be striking usual poses.” She takes up all kinds of events. However, she advises against being a part of birthday parties for children below the age of four as they will not understand, remember or enjoy the concept. Mariam is constantly updating her collection of props by either shopping online or fetching unusual pieces while travelling overseas. She even introduces customised props based on the event. For instance, she had “UniF1ed”-themed tyres and flags as part of the Formula One Grand Prix. Business officer at BNP Paribas by day, this go-getter is also a part of The Dreams Society, a non-profitable organisation formed to help young patients who need urgent support. According to Mariam, this venture has only begun. The team has only recently launched the video booth where people can record a few words during an event, which will be compiled as a complete video at the end. In a year’s time, you can expect to see the Elephant brand expand to accommodate fullfledged photography and videography branches as well. www.womanthismonth.com

Find YourStyle By Maryam Toorani

The island’s nightlife is picking up as the party season approaches. Solve your ‘what to wear’ dilemmas by choosing a styling service that comes straight to your home.

I

t’s clear to see that the women in Bahrain are very style conscious. For many of us girls every day is a runway show here in Bahrain; unfortunately spotting someone else with the same outfit is a frequent, and tiresome, problem. This is where Stella Reuter comes to the rescue. Her ‘Fashion Must Have’ (FMH) boutique has created quite a stir since opening in August and adds a unique flavour to the retail scene in the Kingdom. “I’m a stylist, so I’m accustomed to using all sorts of brands that are not available here in Bahrain. With FMH, I wanted to offer fashionconscious women something different to the www.womanthismonth.com

average shopping experience,” explains Dutch/ British owner Stella. “I also help women who are unsure how to style themselves — which is not something to be ashamed of!” This is perhaps the most exciting element of the company as the team provides personal shopping and styling services. They will come to your home with a collection of clothing customised to your needs, likes and requirements. The fashion experts will help dress you for an event or occasion in a complete look that both fits and suits you. “If a client wants advice on how to add a certain item to their wardrobe, we pay a visit and show her how to use the item with the

things she already has,” adds Stella. Diversity is obvious within the company’s collection. Among the many brands available are celebrity favourites, Camilla and Marc, and arty Swedish label, House of Dagmar. The store’s bestseller so far has been the eccentric jewellery line by Mercedes Salazar. “I try to get a mix of eclectic and simple pieces within different price ranges. The store offers something I would like, my mother would like or even a 13-year-old would like,” says Stella. Aside from being the owner and a stylist, Stella has recently launched her own line of jewellery that is available at FHM. Call 17 003-004. November 2012 |

Autumn arrives to prepare us for cooler weather. The latest trends for the new season invite us to shake out our wardrobes and add some warmth to go alongside the colours designed to brighten up our days and nights.

Cool Nights If you are looking for a change to your usual party nights or work outfits, then consider a long-sleeve dress. It offers a fancy look without much effort, and you can add a nice bracelet, a pair of earrings and some heels and you are ready to impress! Carolina Herrera is spot on with this outfit.

Fur For All This material is a perennial favourite of the fashion designers and oozes ‘warmth’. For this reason it is often found in autumn and winter collections; nowadays, though, it is more about the texture, volume and softness. It’s best worn as an addition to your look, as you can see from the BCBG Max Azria catwalk fashion show.

What the

are Wearing

From festivals to simply street style, actresses love to dress up when they are ‘on show’. Take a look at their choices to see if you can find some of the trends for the season.

Lady Gaga and Donatella Versace The singer, who goes from minimal to maximal in a blink, chose to wear a red vintage Gianni Versace dress from the Versace Spring/Summer 2013 runway. The occasion was a private dinner at the Palazzo Versace held in her honour by Donatella Versace.

Jessica Alba For daily routine in LA, the Fantastic Four actress carried a Tod’s grey handbag to match her pastel colour selection. The striped jacket adds a male touch to her pinkish outfit. 20

Lucy Liu For the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, Lucy Liu vaunted a Versace strapless gown. The white dress has fitted metal that contrasts the delicate fabric, an unusual but striking combination.

Susan Sarandon This talented actress graced the opening ceremony of San Sebastian Film Festival wearing the newest Jaeger-LeCoultre ladies’ timepiece. The pink-gold watch adds even more elegance to her appearance.

Penelope Cruz Salvatore Ferragamo was the Spanish actress’ choice for footwear to complete her look at the San Sebastian Film Festival. The black and white outfit is elevated by the black Salvatore high heels.

This ladylike texture is the most feminine and romantic trend for autumn; it adds all the necessary drama for a love story and fashion designers have definitely fallen for lace. Even with the delicacy of its appearance, new lace collections exhibit stronger and heavier cuts combined with sharp colours, proving that fragile can be turned into bold. It’s time to embrace a total lace look, or pick one piece to tell everyone you are ‘on style’ this season.

Galore Fragrances

There seems to be an abundance of new scents landing in shops this month. Whether you are partial to a musky, floral, seductive or fresh fragrance you will find something that suits you.

Spot the Difference

Following the success of sister perfumes ‘Daisy’ and ‘Lola’, Marc Jacob has released the equally incredibly-packaged scent ‘Dot’, inspired by his love of polka dots. Lush and juicy, the floral scent is designed to be happy and vivacious with blends of berries, honeysuckle, vanilla and sensual musks.

The Perfect Harmony

Ajmal Perfume has launched a delicate new fragrance: ‘Tanaaghom’. Meaning harmony, the scent is an amorous blend of flowers and spices with ingredients including rose, carnation, pepper, amber and sandalwood.

Young Love

A continuation to 2010’s ‘Love Chloe’ scent, ‘Love Chloe Eau Florale’ is sophisticated and fresh; perfect for the fans of the brand. Created to be a bohemian scent with an overdose of floral oxygen, the perfume is enriched with maté leaves, for freshness, and a sweet pea accord.

Lady in Red

Armand Basi ‘Sensual Red’ is a sensual and incredibly feminine scent, ideal for an independent woman. Intensely floral, the scent is combined with a woody base that will linger on the skin for hours.

Tangy Notes

The cult classic DKNY ‘Be Delicious’ scent has been given a makeover; desirable and intoxicating, ‘Be Delicious Eau so Intense’ is a magnified version of the existing scent with an accentuated key apple accord. It resembles the first mouthwatering bite of a freshly picked apple.

Campaign

Who is the Hairiest of Them All? By Alison Coldridge

It’s no secret that the majority of women cannot stand facial fuzz. However, this month we will grin and bear it in support of a crucial fundraising endeavour.

F

or the last eight years, the month of November has been dedicated to raising awareness and vital funds for prostate cancer. Men worldwide have shown their support by taking part in ‘Movember’; a moustachegrowing campaign. The participants start the month cleanshaven and don’t shave again for the remainder of November. Supported by the women in their lives, each moustache-clad man is encouraged to seek sponsorship from his hairy growth through the campaign’s official online organisation. Friends, family, colleagues and anyone are asked to donate as much as possible towards the Movember participant, in aid of their challenge. The campaign is helping to change the face of men’s health by effectively becoming walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Prostate cancer is not as widely discussed as other forms of cancer and leading to many men falling ill. www.womanthismonth.com

Not every prostate cancer sufferer experiences symptoms, which primarily include abnormalities during urination or sexual function, and Movember enables more doctors to provide men with check-ups. Here in Bahrain we hope to see lots of suave men sporting moustaches this month, recognising this as a signal of support. The vision Movember moustaches were first grown in Australia in 2003 and since then the charitable scheme has spread worldwide. Today, the Movember Campaign runs official operations across Europe, South Africa, America and Australia; however men from all over the globe are taking part through the campaign’s website. The vision is to have an everlasting impact on the state of men’s health. To this end Movember has established the Global Action Plan (GAP), which aims to accelerate prostate

cancer outcomes through global research collaboration. Funds raised will be allocated to research that supports the GAP. The programme currently includes two sections: the Annual Global Collaborative Research Project and Promoveo. The best researchers around the world are gathered to work together on key challenges that will speed up breakthroughs and ultimately benefit men with prostate cancer. Promoveo is a global, online community for prostate cancer researchers, clinicians and organisations. Similar to LinkedIn, but tailored specifically for the prostate cancer research community, Promoveo members can share ideas, find out what key research resources are available in other countries, post information to foster discussion, and connect with other researchers from across the globe to derive outcomes. 20 Tips Showcase

How to do

AW12 Beauty By Maryam Toorani

With the new season in full swing, it’s time to complement your autumn/winter wardrobe with the beauty looks seen on catwalks. Woman This Month shows you how it’s done. 34

| November 2012

www.womanthismonth.com

Make Yourself Up

1. Grunge it. Go for the gothic look with ladylike accents. Master a dark pout with a plum coloured lipstick or if you want to go full throttle, go for black kohl rimmed eyes and pile on the mascara.

2.

Go blue. There is a new hue in town; cobalt blue was all over the catwalks during the autumn/winter fashion shows. Opt for eye shadow with a metallic hint to it, add a little bronzer for a winter glow and keep everything else simple.

3. Get catty. Have you always been a fan of the flick? Well, the

runways proved that this feline trend is here to stay. For a symmetrical look, have your liner mirror your brow line.

4. Be flawless. The ‘au naturale’ look is big this year. Create a

naturally flushed complexion by using rosy cream blusher on your cheeks and keep your lips nude.

Tame Your Tresses

11.

5. All about the brow. Bold, statement brows are a prominent winter

Swing it like the 60s. 1960s inspired ponytails were huge on the catwalks. To get the effortless look, try a low ponytail that rests at the nap of your neck. Make sure to tease the hair at your crown for a va-va-voom effect.

6. Brighten up. Many designers chose to add a pop of colour to

Take it to the side. Update your side-swept hair with a textured braid. This look also allows you to keep your hairstyle sleek and smooth through the windy weather.

trend but make sure you keep them groomed and neat. For a less dramatic look, enhance your eyebrows with a shadow instead of a pencil liner.

their models. If a flashy eye shadow is not for you, a more subtle approach to the trend is to use colourful mascara.

7. Try burgundy. Rock the berry trend in your choice of cosmetics. For your lips, try the season’s ‘it’ colour burgundy and keep the rest of your make-up simple.

8. Futurise. This year designers have been very experimental, but

are alien inspired looks a little too extreme? If you answer ‘yes’ try out a metallic green nail varnish or glittered shimmer for a more subtle approach.

9. Make it matte. Lips were centre stage on the catwalks and if

you want to opt for brightness, the matte finish is the trend to try. The trick is to fill your entire mouth with lip liner before applying lipstick

10. Nail it. There is a lot that you can do with your nails, to present

your more artistic side. Not all of us will want spikes on our nails, but another on-trend look is a neutral manicure with black tips.

12.

13. et it down. Going natural was a big hit this season. So ladies, take your hair pins down, add a dab of styling cream to your freshly washed hair and head out. Simple!

14.

Try it textured. Looking for a ladylike look with an edge? The plaited bun was spotted on many models at fashion week. Simply braid your hair and twist into a side bun.

15. Forever fringed. Bangs are back in a bold way. For a

Hollywood inspired look a la Jessica Biel and Taylor Swift, ask your stylist to give you a thick, blunt fringe.

Care For Your Complexion

16. Modify your regime. Don’t forget to reorganise your

bathroom cabinet too. Choose cream based cleansers to protect from the harsh winter weather and look for products that contain little or no alcohol.

17.

Moisturise. This goes without saying. Blot skin dry after a wash and apply tons of moisturiser to seal in the water and to ensure no dry, flaky skin appears.

18 Remember sunscreen. Many of us tend to shy away from sun screen during the winter months. But the sun’s UV rays can still be harmful even if it isn’t very hot.

19. Consider your diet. Don’t let the lazy winter days have you drinking hot chocolate every night. Stock up on foods that contain omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids like fish oil or flaxseed oil to help keep your skin clear.

20.

Be gentle. If your skin is uncomfortably dry, avoid harsh peels and masks. Instead, use a cleansing milk or toner without alcohol. www.womanthismonth.com

A

utumn is here, but that doesn’t mean you have to pack it in. This time of the year is perfect to prepare your outdoor furniture for the upcoming cooler months. After all, the happier you are with it, the more likely you are to use your open-air space for entertaining. While the season is a little too chilly to sit on the grass or bare outdoor furniture, it’s often still warm enough to gather outside. You can stack and stash poufs in a corner for casual dining. We love the futons available at Freedom, Lifestyle and Home Centre. They’re comfy enough for sitting on the floor and sturdy enough to be used on a deck or patio when the weather is fair. Outdoor cushions have become bargain items at home décor outlets. Consider picking up a half-dozen graphic ones to keep on hand. The ones at Marks & Spencer win our affection with owl and fox prints in typical colours of the season. Opt for a few long lounge cushions for group seating around a low Japanese-style indoor-outdoor table. The right material Of all the woods available for deck and patio ideas, many consider teak to be the ultimate choice. Luxurious in look and feel, the hardwood is naturally weather-resistant. We’re eyeing the teak stool from BoConcept. Wrought-iron furniture has always been a great option for the outdoors. A very traditional material that has retained its popularity for good reason, it offers a classic look that adds instant style to even the most casual settings.

Glow in the dark To add a quirky touch, you could introduce bright blow-up fitness balls which make fun outdoor patio seating; they also work great on damp grass. It’s a win-win. If that doesn’t float your boat, the contemporary and unique illuminated LED tables and chairs from Litecraft, available at Debenhams, are a stylish alternative. Durable, weatherproof and made from recyclable materials, this decorative and functional piece features seven different colours that can be controlled by a small pocket-sized remote control. They are rechargeable directly from the mains and have a battery life of eight hours, meaning no unsightly wires when in use. The stunning illuminated table is ideal for adding ambience to any outdoor area.

Green with envy Showcase your garden with tasteful and atmospheric lighting. In the case of landscape illumination, less is more. Just a few effective choices can make pathways safe and your yard appealing even after sunset. Lanterns from outlets like The White Company are perfect. We often head to nurseries looking for inspiration, but vintage and home décor shops also showcase heaps of fresh and exciting pieces. On our hunt for a beguiling collection of patio wares, we spotted a ton of lovely new garden jewels in Sia Home Fashion. The Urban Nature collection boasts gorgeous Vanda orchids. The faux flowers bring the woods of foreign lands to your backyard; why bother with gardening when these beauties look so real?

Tried and Tested:

Alternative Therapies

By Alison Coldridge

We are all sceptical about obscure therapies, whether they work and what they achieve. So I’ve done the leg work for you and undergone some of the more unusual treatments available in Bahrain.

T

here is no denying that facials, massages and scrubs are fabulous. They do what they are supposed to and always manage to send you off into a utopian world of relaxation. However, there are so many more options out there besides a classic massage or a Vitamin C scrub. Over the last few years, an abundance of new, some slightly bizarre, therapies have

38

| November 2012

emerged enticing you to soothe your body in different ways. There are many categories, inclusive of many treatments, at the top of which seems to be energy healing. Designed to help calm the mind, body and soul, this is typically linked to reiki, theta, acupuncture and crystal healing. But there are additionally many ‘hands on’

treatments that arguably achieve the same results. For example, certain types of massages will calm both the body and mind, while leaving you centred and soothed. Although not all of these are available in the Kingdom yet, we have unearthed some of the less-known therapies to see what all the fuss is about. www.womanthismonth.com

The treatment: Bamboo Draining Massage

Our expert: Suphavidree Nasomchai (Eit), spa manager at Dessange At Dessange, I was advised by the spa manager to try a massage which uses smooth bamboo sticks. It did feel slightly like the therapist was using a rolling pin to flatten me out, but once I became accustomed to the motion, I could feel my muscles succumb. Eliminating toxins “This deep relaxing body treatment is a combination of sensuality of the woods and

hand movements,” explained Eit. “This treatment uses bamboo as it moves along and covers the body better than hands,” she explains. Plus the dry oil used, Dessange’s own, has benefits. “The dry oil contains orange and lemon fruits, both which are natural healers. This product helps boost the immune system, balances the pH level, clears skin and hydrates the lymph system. Additionally, it has an anti-orange peel benefit and works to relieve muscular tension. This activates the blood circulation, as well as

increases drainage, accelerating the elimination of toxins,” she outlines. Why it’s alternative This treatment, which originates from ancient Malaysian traditions, is considered to be alternative because it is the only one of its kind that helps rid cellulite and lymphatic problems. “We recommend this treatment to those who have bad circulation, water retention and who want to prevent orange-peel skin due to bad lymphatic system,” says Eit.

The treatment: Hot Stone Therapy Our expert: Sapana Munikr, senior therapist at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa If you are after a vigorous massage, the hot stone therapy should be at the top of your list. Ideal for those who suffer from insomnia and muscular pain, this treatment uses heated volcanic stones to prompt relaxation and healing. Targeting key points with heat “The flat stones are placed on key body points to penetrate deep heat into the muscles,” explains Sapana. “This achieves complete muscle relaxation after one 80-minute session. However, if your aches and pains return then we suggest multiple sessions,” she advises. The treatment begins with a full-body massage completed with aromatic minty oil. As normal, you can state areas of your body which are particularly tense and the therapist will focus there. “I use the hot stones to thoroughly relax the muscles and to improve the blood circulation,” she says. The incorporation of the hot stones with the oil forced every muscle to relent and I further relaxed when Sapana placed the stones in a vertical line down my spine to let the heat penetrate into the skin layers. Why it’s alternative The use of the stones meant that the massage was more intense than usual, nevertheless it was completely enjoyable. “The hot stone therapy is still relatively new and not many people are aware of it,” adds Sapana. “Using stones in a treatment can seem a bit strange, but the beneficial qualities received from the direct source of heat are tremendous.” www.womanthismonth.com

Wellbeing

The treatment: Acupuncture Our expert: Dr Yang, Chinese medicine doctor at Bahrain Wellness Resort Acupuncture is a treatment I have always been unwilling to test, but it is the most recognised form of energy healing and so I had to give it a try. The idea of having little needles imbedded all over my body wasn’t appealing. However, surprisingly, I felt incredibly light throughout the process. Increasing energy “This ancient form of natural Chinese medicine has been available to patients at the Bahrain Wellness Resort for four years now,” says Dr Yang, one of the resort’s three Chinese medicine doctors. “Primarily, it increases energy levels and improves blood circulation and we recommend it to people who have difficulty sleeping,” he continues. The treatment is very simple; Dr Yang first consults with you and asks where you have aches and pains. He then takes your pulse and decides on which areas to concentrate. In the treatment room, he will place the necessary amount of needles on various body points, each which assists certain ailments. You are then left with your own thoughts for half an hour whilst the needles do their magic. Why it’s alternative Sticking pins in a person isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but there is a reason that so many people frequently return to acupuncture. Nevertheless, there are other options that achieve the same end result. “If a patient doesn’t wish to choose acupuncture, there are many similar therapies I recommend,” offers Dr Yang. “Try acupressure or reflexology to target certain trigger points that will promote relaxation,” he explains.

Pearly Whites BAHRAIN SPECIALIST HOSPITAL

Dr Aravind Viswambharan

Give your children the best start in life by keeping their dental health in check. Ensure they visit the dentist regularly to keep any irregularities or problems at bay.

I

t’s not uncommon for parents to require advice as to when their little ones need dental care. The typical age to start any orthodontic treatment is between nine and 14 years, however the experts at Bahrain Specialist Hospital (BSH) suggest that it is normal for children to be examined at an even younger age. “An early examination helps detect any severe teeth or jaw problems quickly. It is much better to see a child early to observe the situation than to see them later and miss an opportunity to provide the best solution,” advises Dr Aravind Viswambharan, orthodontist at BSH. Studies show that the age of a patient has a vital role in the effectiveness and efficiency of results. “This is a factor that we always keep www.womanthismonth.com

in mind. Starting treatment in growing patients at the right time has proved significant effect in correction of disharmonies in different planes of facial growth,” says Dr Aravind. Examining the skeletal maturity of a person is also important to determine when to apply any clinical practice. A number of biological indicators can be used to determine skeletal maturity, including hand-wrist radiograph, cervical vertebral maturation and even the canine tooth’s root completion. In some cases though, treatment is purposely delayed by the doctor. For example, this can happen with patients who have a bigger lower jaw than upper jaw. “In these kinds of situations, children need to be treated only after their growth is completed.

The goal of each orthodontist is to provide each person the most appropriate action at the most appropriate time,” Dr Aravind explains. When braces are required Your child could need braces for a number of different reasons. Even if your child has straight teeth, it is still recommended to get a professional opinion. “An overcrowded mouth and an uneven bite can go unnoticed by parents, but they are usually the main reason that children need braces, says Dr Aravind. “Starting the process early doesn’t mean your child will wear braces right away, it means we get a chance to determine any existing problems,” he concludes. Parenting

Are You Over-parenting?

By Dr Clare Beckett-McInroy

Persistent, prying, panic or pandemonium — how are you overdoing your role as a parent?

W

hile culturally and ethically there is an underlying and unwritten consensus about appropriate and inappropriate parenting, many are confused about what is the right amount and type required to ensure their children become confident, socialised, talented and productive for their future life. With this in mind, is over-parenting really a fair term or concept? Parental involvement has been studied for many years. Optimal parenting, referred to as a 42

| November 2012

parent who is involved and responsive, who sets high expectations but respects their child’s autonomy, was a word used by Diana Baumrind, a clinical and developmental psychologist at the University of California in the ‘50s and ‘60s. What is important here is having boundaries while also listening to your child. As Madeline Levine, clinician, consultant and author asserted in the New York Times in August, such parents are seen to have a perfect balance of involvement and independence. Plus, they generally raise

children who do better academically, psychologically and socially, compared to those whose parents are permissive and less involved, or controlling and more involved. So, what makes this balancing act so successful and what can we learn from it? It is clear that these parents work on cultivating motivation. The term “authoritative parenting”, seen by many as the optimum mentoring style, is referred to as democratic, involving a childcentric approach in which parents hold high expectations for their children. www.womanthismonth.com

Carol Dweck, a social and developmental psychologist at Stanford University, conducted a research that indicated that such parents raise more motivated, and in turn, more successful children. Her experiments involve, for example, young children solving simple puzzles. Most did these tasks with little difficulty. The next part of the experiment involved Dr Dweck telling some of the children how clever, bright or capable they were. The result was that those children who were not told they’re smart were more motivated to tackle increasingly difficult puzzles. They also exhibited higher levels of confidence and showed greater overall progress in puzzle-solving. This may seem counterintuitive, but praising children’s talents and abilities seems to throw their confidence. Attempting more tricky puzzles carries the risk of losing their status as “amazing” and it deprives them from the thrill of choosing to work simply for its own sake, regardless of end result. The consequence is that reasonably supporting a child’s autonomy, and limiting interference, leads to better academic and emotional outcomes. In short, don’t over-praise. Let them grow up At a very practical level, this means that parents must not do things for children that they are capable or almost able of doing themselves. It should always be about the child’s needs. Some parents help their children or do tasks for them to satisfy their own needs, consciously or inadvertently. The main goal during ‘growing up’ is to develop a sense of self that is independent, confident and generally in accord with reality. If a baby is always carried even though it can actually walk, a carer diminishes their confidence and distorts reality. This is also the case when a child may, for example, be working on a creative project for their homework and a parent steps in to ‘help’ which involves re-writing or even re-designing the whole thing. Remember, it’s good to congratulate yourself when your child does something for themselves. You have done your job well. At times, the final result may not be quite what you wanted or expected. Yet, pointless intervention diminishes your child’s self-esteem and they can also feel angry at your prying. Finding the limit Isn’t it a parent’s job to help with those things that are just beyond your child’s reach? What defines over-parenting? In the early 1900s, following research and observation, Lev Vygotsky, an educational theorist, developed the concept of the zone of proximal development (ZPD) defined as the most www.womanthismonth.com

difficult task a child can do independently and the most difficult task the child can do with help. In short, interaction with a teacher, more able classmate, parent or helper can benefit a child on the edge of learning a new concept. They provide a standing ground in the same way that a scaffold enables a decorator to reach the highest parts of a room that would otherwise be out of reach. To help understand what a child needs help with, it’s important to observe them and to tap into how they are feeling. Are they confused, inquisitive or frustrated? Asking open-ended questions are useful here. The difficult part is

to know when you can step in with questions and ideas and when to leave your child to figure things out for themselves.

How to be an authoritative parent:

Express warmth and nurturance Listen to your children l Encourage independence l Place limits, consequences and expectations on their behaviour l Allow them to express opinions l Administer fair and consistent discipline l Encourage them to discuss options l l

Parenting Fall to rise The theory also involves accepting that it is fine to get things wrong and learn from mistakes. To get messy and to spill things in practical activities and to know that mistakes are normal, even for adults, is common sense after all. Standing back and allowing your child to make mistakes is one of the greatest challenges. It’s easier when they’re young — tolerating a stumbling toddler, reaching out your hand to ensure their safety, is far different from dealing with an upset pre-teen that made a wrong decision about, for example, trusting a friend. Of course, part of being a parent is minimising risk for your child emotionally and physically. Many say that they cannot “be with” seeing their child unhappy. Think back to sleepless nights when you refrained from running at their first whimpering. It’s hard and yet to rush in too quickly is detrimental all around. They need to develop coping strategies so that they can handle the inevitable challenging circumstances of life. Drawing the line There is a vital distinction between good and bad parental involvement. For example, a young child doesn’t want to sit and do their homework. There are some things that just

44

| November 2012

have to be done and they need to understand that they just have to conform on occasions. Good parents insist on compliance when necessary, not because they need their child to be a perfect student, but because it is important to learn the fundamentals of life which include developing a good work ethic, in this case. Ask yourself on occasions where you use scaffolding and when you do their homework for them. Are you happy for your child to turn in their work with some errors or is it about you and how you feel about having mistakes on the page that the teacher will see? Remember what the theories above say. Children thrive with reliable, consistent and noninterfering help. To conclude, be clear about your own values while making sure their own life is fulfilling. Studies show that parents are more vulnerable to the excesses of over-parenting if they are unhappy themselves. It is important for children to be presented with a version of adult life that is attractive and worth striving for. As a parent, you must know your child well enough to make the distinction — can they manage a situation alone or do they need help? You also need to be brave enough to step back and let them make mistakes.

Signs of over-parenting: Watch-dogged kids: Unless your child is a spy of sorts, there is no reason to be tracking his/her every move. Excessive monitoring can cause feelings of hostility. l Extra extra-curricular activities: If you’re child looks like he/she could use a personal assistant to manage weekly schedules, there is a good chance there is a hovering “helicopter” parent to blame. l Piling on the praise: Continually claiming they’re smart makes kids avoid activities they don’t excel at in the fear of failure. Don’t cultivate narcissism. l Parental temper tantrums: Intra-parental competition is highly embarrassing for yourself and your children. Avoid ranting about their teachers and classmates on social media. Let them resolve their own conflicts. l Stubborn children: Nothing beats pampering that boomerangs. If you’re in your 50s and supporting your child, it’s time to cut the cord. l

Staggering statistics

Fit to Kill It is something of a contemporary paradox: although 21st century children seem wiser to the ways of the world, their bodies are unhealthier than ever.

T

he amenities and innovation of the modern world seem to have paralysed children’s instincts for good old-fashioned recreation and stress release through movement. Without these basic connections of the body and mind to the world around them, how can they possibly grow into cognisant, healthy participants in society? Children look up to adults and, in some ways, want to be like them. However, adult disease onset in childhood was never supposed to be part of the deal. Idleness and a meagre diet have led to an increase in weight gain, hypertension, cholesterol levels and diabetes amongst children. Part of the challenge in treating these formerly ‘grown-up’ diseases in juveniles is that putting youngsters on prescriptive medications poses risks. On a

positive note, there are alternative methods to nipping these issues in the bud. Just breathe Barnes et al found that simple breathing meditation lowered the blood pressure and heart rate in a group of children with normal levels. Those who practised meditation exhibited a greater decrease in the numbers than those who participated in health education. This study suggests that meditation may be a valuable practice for improving children’s health. The technique is easy to learn, costs virtually nothing and can be effectively led by teachers in a classroom. Moreover, other studies have shown that school-based meditation improves classroom conduct.

• Genetic and hormonal causes of obesity are rare. • Among children who are obese at six years of age, the probability that it will persist exceeds 50 per cent; 70-80 per cent of adolescents who are obese will remain so as adults. • One in three children born in 2000 has a lifetime risk of developing diabetes. • Since the 1970s, obesity rates have more than doubled in pre-school children aged two-five years and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and more than tripled in children aged six -11 years. • Despite pounding publicity and considerable public health efforts to battle childhood obesity, 0.5 per cent of children are added to these sad statistics every year. • While most children spend at least 180 days in school each year, only 8 per cent of elementary schools, 6.4 per cent of middle schools and 5.8 per cent of high schools provide daily physical education.

Focus on yoga According to a research published in the Journal of Attention Disorders, children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and stabilised with medication showed fewer symptoms and great improvement in attention and behaviour when they practised yoga regularly. Thus, the discipline may be a useful complementary activity for children who already take medication to manage their ADHD. Kick it! Tai chi has proven to have multiple therapeutic benefits. It is said that a growing body of knowledge supports the health benefits of regular practice of the internal Chinese martialart form. Evidence from a comprehensive review of more than 200 studies confirms the remedial value of tai chi for improving quality of life, pain management and physical function (including activity tolerance and cardiovascular function). It also reduces the risk of falls, enhances immune response, and increases flexibility, strength, balance and kinaesthetic awareness.

Travel

Lose Yourself By Elma Bartholomew

Leave your watch at home, switch off your phone, tear up your itinerary and forget your bucket list. Surrender to the meandering spirit of exploration and just… get lost!

Varanasi, India

The Low-down: Considered one of the holiest places on the sub-continent, Varanasi is where Hindu pilgrims come to wash a lifetime of sins in the Ganges, the river of salvation. It is named after the two rivers, Varuna and Asi, which meet here. Previously known as Benares and Kashi, this is the city of Lord Shiva, the most powerful god in Hinduism. Expiring here is thought to be the greatest blessing as it offers liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Believed to be the crossing ground between the physical and spiritual worlds, the city of light is home to intimate rituals conducted publicly on the ‘ghats’. Varanasi has an eerie yet bewitching aura which makes it an unforgettable experience because of the collective sense of rebirth and the sacred acts of cremation. X-Factor: Once you’re done taking in the magical side of this overwhelming city, walking along the intricate stairways and passages or taking a boat ride, you can take a trip back to the present day by visiting the markets. Varanasi is popular for its Banarasi saris made from silk, adorned with intricate designs and zari embellishments (threads of gold or silver). Shopaholics can find much more than brocaded fabrics here. Fetch the best of handmade brassware, jewellery, woodcraft, carpets, wall hangings, lampshades and masks of deities which make the perfect souvenirs. Foodies shouldn’t leave without trying out the langra mangoes and khoa, a dairy product. The daring epicurean can have a go at the Banarasi paan. Best For: Culturologists will go crazy in the labyrinthine ‘Old City’. Varanasi boasts a unique culture of fine arts and literature. Watch an all-night open-air music concert and visit the various forts and museums within the area. Indulge in authentic ayurvedic treatments to relax muscles that have spent enthralling hours weaving through crowds of people. 54

Kyoto, Japan

The Low-down: There are many places that anyone bitten by the travel bug ought to visit. Japan ranks on top of our list of favourite destinations. Just as travellers can’t call themselves so without having been to Paris, London and Rome, it’s much the same if you haven’t experienced Kyoto. The treasure house of the country’s rich culture and much of its history, this city plays host to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, over 1,600 Buddhist temples and more than 400 Shinto shrines. Kyoto is the Japan of your imagination, what you have read in books, heard of in conversation and seen in the movies. X-Factor: Like other tourist destinations, Kyoto has its share of amazing museums and parks. Nevertheless, this is a temple city and it would be silly to leave without visiting Fushimi-Inari Taisha. This shrine could be dubbed the poster boy of Kyoto. The bathhouses, shrines and temples are great for the typical tourist. The Kyoto International Manga Museum caught our attention. Located in an old elementary school building, it is the perfect introduction to the manga form of art. It features a fair share of English-translated copies amidst a growing collection of over 300,000 Japanese comic books. Best For: For those with itchy feet, we recommend a walk around Kyoto’s neighbourhoods, especially the Gion district and Tetsugaku-noMichi (Path of Philosophy). Avid readers can find themselves immersed in the tales narrated through Memoirs of a Geisha and Norwegian Wood. Beauty is scattered generously across Kyoto. All it takes to enjoy it is setting a little time aside to explore and discover hidden jewels.

Havana, Cuba

The Low-down: It is safe to say that Havana is the Caribbean equivalent to Goa, because of its romantic atmosphere and infectious energy. This city thrives on all things vintage. In every corner, you can find hints of its roller-coaster history and influences of various countries, especially Latin American. The warm crystalline waters are as captivating as its culturally unique societies. Do not expect to see the jaw-dropping glory of popular European cities. Havana is as laid-back as it gets. You need to get out there and find the true essence of this Cuban paradise; there’s only one way to do it. Walk! X-Factor: It’s easy to ‘get lost’ in the city of columns; the opportunities are endless. From the neighbourhoods of Centro Habana or Vedado and a mysterious Santería ritual to a guided tour around Habana Vieja’s enchanting colonial monuments and a stroll along the Malecón (Av de Maceo), you will be lured so far in to its lifestyle that you will fail to tell apart the thorn from the flower. Take a tour in a classic ‘50s car. Must-visits include The National Museum of Fine Arts, the monuments at Plaza de la Revolución and the white sandy beaches of Playas del Este. Experience a late-night cabaret show, roll a fat one at the cigar museum and catch Che’s mausoleum while you’re there. Quit being a tourist for just a day and dare to walk aimlessly, preferably a couple of blocks north of Parque Central, to find the time warp you pictured Havana to be. Best For: Photographers. To familiarise yourself with the raw essence of this city, you need to shack up with a local, find your rumba rhythm (on the street), witness the evolution of Cuban music at historic music halls and clubs, and keep an eye out for urban graffiti and murals (Banksy included). Finish off your cultural osmosis with a taste of authentic cuisine and drop in for a pint at the traditional bars — typical Hemingway haunts.

Food

Multicultural By James Claire

Blend

As the year ebbs towards its penultimate month, we tend to visit others more than usual to say our hellos and appreciation for a year almost completed in safety and for the love and sake of friends.

W

hile November is the time to give thanks in America, it is also a time to show our gratitude to all of those close to us before 2012 becomes yet another page in our collective history books. It is also a time to say “bon voyage” as some depart for their vacation. If Bahrain has taught me anything, it is the diversity of food and the wonder of opening your heart to the cuisine of distant lands and that of your friends. Having travelled among other GCC nations and within the Middle East region as a greater entity, I find that it is this multicultural mix that is the glue that binds this nation together. We are an eclectic blend of nationalities, but

we have all made this tiny island our home. The longer we remain, the harder it is to ever consider a departure and the more we learn about one another and the influences our cooking has upon the greater whole of the nation. With franchise eateries from Britain, America, South Africa, Australia, Asia and India, our culinary marketplace is immeasurable to say the least. For this month’s recipes, I have chosen dishes from Thailand, India, Philippines and Korea as a “thank you” to those who have given us all so much to be grateful for. So far from their homelands, these recipes would make a fine addition to any farewell or end of year feast.

Chicken Adobo (Philippines) 1kg 80ml 2 60ml 500ml 3 40ml 10g to taste to taste

Kimchi (Korea) 2 large Chinese cabbages 160g rock salt 1l cold water 100ml fish sauce 1tspn paprika 1 white onion, finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, chopped finely 1 apple sliced, peeled and chopped finely 1tbspn salt 20g sugar 30g spring onion, finely sliced

Chop the cabbage in small chunks and place into a large bowl. Cover with the water and rock salt. Combat the Cold

With the advent of winter, the appearance of dry skin will soon be noticeable. Treat this with products that target the problem areas to help reduce discomfort.

S

pecialist skincare brand Flexitol features a range of products recommended by dermatologists. Each is designed to provide relief to affected skin areas, in particular dry patches. Often we care for our face and body but forget that our lips also require attention. Since our mouth has thin skin and no sweat glands, it tends to dehydrate faster than any other part of us. Flexitol lip balm is an effective moisturiser that locks water in and protects you from dry weather conditions. The balm consists of a blend of ingredients including urea and cocoa butter. By applying to the affected area three to four times a day, you will feel instant relief and will be left with a soft and supple feel. Continue this for a few weeks for long-lasting results. The cooler weather will have a negative effect all over your body. Try the Flexitol hand balm to reduce itchiness and irritation; the nourishing formulation is developed by dermatologists to protect hands from the damaging agents that can cause excessive moisture loss. The formula has been fortified with Vitamin E for replenishment from the first application. Unlike other lotions and creams, it is richly formulated, so a little goes a long way! Cutting-Edge Cooking V YAQUBY STORES

A good knife can make all the difference when it comes to cooking. Invest in a set that will keep your creations exceptional and keep your fingers safe!

ictorinox manufactures a wide choice of knives to suit any culinary situation. The range includes all factors: size, function, style and preference. The most important feature is function, as different knives have different uses. It’s important to use the proper knife for a specific task as this ensures precise and safe cutting. A paring knife is the most common. Generally used for small jobs such as peeling fruits and vegetables, the blade size is three to four inches long. Other knife styles by Victorinox include the chef’s, the slicer, the fillet, the utility, the shaping, the Santoku and the boning knife. On the whole, the knives come with a straight or fine edge. This means each style has a perfect taper along the blade and no serrations, designed to cut without tearing or shredding. Proper post-use care is imperative. You shouldn’t soak your knives in water, instead, hand wash and dry them immediately after use. Do this especially if they have been used on fruit or salty foods, which may cause some staining, even on stainless steel. Though Victorinox knives are dishwasher safe, the brand strongly discourages this as the dishwasher’s agitation may cause damage. Harsh detergents and intense heat can also be harmful and cause pitting and spotting on the blades. Call 17210-959.

The Perfect Steak THE BUTCHER SHOP & GRILL

The Middle East is heaven for food lovers. Whether it is Mexican, Italian, South African or traditional Arabic dishes, the region is bursting with aromatic food varieties.

O

ne cuisine style that Bahrain seems it can’t get enough of, is steak. There are plenty of steakhouses but one hot-spot is undeniably The Butcher Shop & GRILL. A highend South African steakhouse, the restaurant offers delicious meals for the entire family. It specialises in top quality steaks and boasts a comprehensive in-house retail butchery service that allows customers to select the size and cut of their own steak. Along with grills, the menu also offers a range of burgers, seafood and poultry. The Butcher Shop & GRILL’s reputation for quality food has been developed by ensuring that all products used are of the best quality available. These high standards are visibly present from the procuring and handling of beef, poultry and lamb products to the knowledgeable staff that have been specially www.womanthismonth.com

trained to provide premium service and enhance the dining experience. Perfecting your steak at home "If you want to cook a good steak, make sure you buy a good steak," advises Peter Sass, The Butcher Shop & GRILL's master butcher. "Visit your supermarket or indeed the Butcher Shop & GRILL’s retail butchery, and ask important questions such as the origin of the meat, if it was grass or grain fed and which cut is the best for the function you are planning. Build up some knowledge about steaks to ensure you always get the best cut available," he explains. You should know your cut of meat; whether it is a fillet, rump, sirloin, T-bone, prime rib or ribeye. With the main difference being the fat content, the cut of beef you choose has a direct impact on the flavour and taste.

A few people like their steaks near raw, but many tend to prefer their steaks from medium rare to well done. "If you decide in advance, you’re more likely to pay attention and remove the meat in time," Peter suggests. Ideally, you should only turn the steak once; twice at most. "The steak needs to be intact with all the juices and spices when served. Don’t stab the meat with a sharp object like a fork, instead leave it to cook with minimal turning," he continues. You can tell if your steak is done by making a small incision. If you see the steak secretes natural juices then it is ready. "Once done, it should rest for as long as it was cooked for to allow the juices to return to their natural places. Just before serving, brush the steak with melted butter to give it that added sheen," Peter concludes. Call 17 172-323. November 2012 |

WoMentality

Date

A Blind

By Hard-headed Woman

Some say being in love makes you blind; a Canadian beau would have me agreeing wholeheartedly.

B

eing my age and single, I have endured much. A recent tug of the heart strings, however, had me jumping through hoops and got me thinking if any of this is worth the angst at all. I think I just attract these guys. Some call it pheromones, the scent of love. While he may wear eau de toilette, I’m starting to think mine is really ‘eau de toilet’.

64

| November 2012

Canadian and amazing, my blindness for his physique made me miss certain things on our first night out. Not until days later did I realise his dress sense was stuck in retro overdrive. When Bill and Ted had their amazing adventure, tennis shoes and a backward ball cap were fun, even trendy. Twenty years since, it’s a little out of date and extremely ‘unchic’. My blindness continued. Gorgeous “hunk of the month” worked across the causeway. We aligned our days off so that we could spend time together. When the day arrived, he turned up, dropped his luggage at the door and went to bed. That’s right. He slept for 18 hours out of the 24 that we had together. I had waited a week to see my heartthrob. Instead of hanging out with me, he lay beside me, snoring, in dirty socks et al. Apparently, I run a hotel now. My guest awoke, ate and left back across the border. I can hear you all saying it right now — enough! Unfortunately, I had thought each event was a one-off. I would forgive him for being male and show compassion and understanding. I assumed that it would never happen again. The next week, it did! In a land where BD2 cleans your car, BD5 inside and out, there is no excuse for any automobile looking like a South American bordello. His vehicle needed a housekeeper to spend a week in there. “Clutter is the dirty desk of a confused mind,” stated someone famous. I was starting to see things about my gorgeously figured man that really worried me. But he adored me, he missed me and he needed me. And I fell blindly for it. His vacation arrived. He left the night it started. I sent him a dozen texts and two dozen emails. None returned. At vacation’s end, he showed up with familiar words — “Miss, Love, Adore.” I scoffed at his advances. If he had been far too busy to reply to my messages, why must I accept his? Most of you, I know, are quicker on the uptake. Thankfully, I’ve heard of both sexes being this foolish. I do know that despite my trials, I am not alone. The final straw involved cold hard cash. First, there was a dinner date. The bill totalled BD12 of which he made me pay half and then kept the change. Romantic and fiscal! Then, there was a request that I help collect a gift for his grandmother at the Souq. I paid the taxi fare, collected the gift and paid its cost. He awoke, kissed me, took the gift and left for the border. I don’t mind not being taken care of. I am, after all, a modern alpha female, strong and independent. Nevertheless, I will not stand for being used as a hotel, cook and cleaner. I will certainly not stand for being ripped off or taken advantage of. If there is no equity, then there is no relationship. I hope his grandmother liked her gift. It cost me BD20; it cost him a lot more — the best woman he could ever have found. All the same, I doubt he will ever realise the error of his ways. Love may be blind, but so is stupidity and he will just never see that. www.womanthismonth.com
