This oratorio was composed by George Frideric Handel in just three weeks in 1741. Following the first performance in Dublin a year later, the response was overwhelming as the Dublin Journal suggests: “Words are wanting to express the exquisite Delight it afforded to the admiring crouded Audience. The Sublime, the Grand, and the Tender, adapted to the most elevated, majestick and moving Words, conspired to transport and charm the ravished Heart and Ear.” Since then, performances of Messiah have been literally countless, its impact incalculable. The Illawarra Choral Society performs Messiah every second year in the Wollongong Town Hall with its magnificent organ. The choir will continue this tradition in December 2019 and will, once again, attempt to raise the roof of the Town Hall with our performance of the Hallelujah Chorus. Under the baton of Musical Director Meryl Jackson-Kew, the choir will be joined by guest soloists, organ and orchestra.
