Location. Location. Location.
Deep in the South Island at 46.0988° S, 168.9458° E sits Gore, home to Mataura Valley Milk. This Southland dairy region gives us an extraordinary advantage. It is well established, rich in farming expertise, supported by strong rural services, and equipped with technologies that help us produce exceptional nutrition for a growing world.
Southland is home to a significant share of New Zealand’s largest dairy herds and the source of our milk. Its landscape, long-term clean water supply, and ideal conditions for pasture growth make it one of the finest grass-producing regions anywhere.
This premium pasture, combined with investment in herd homes, standoff feed pads, and supplementary feeding, means many farms in the region supply milk right through the year. Around 18,000 cows are on year-round supply, giving us consistency, quality, and confidence in every drop.
We source our milk from a small group of farmers. Some have farmed this land across generations for over 100 years
Our farmers are part of our Mataura Valley Milk family. They are key stakeholders who drive our success and support our ambition to be the world’s best nutrition business.
Because our supply chain is local, we can trace every drop of milk. This gives us full transparency from pasture to market and ensures we consistently deliver premium nutritional products for our global clients.
Our farmers typically farm an average of three cows per hectare. This allows herds to thrive on high-quality pasture, ensuring they are well nourished and able to produce exceptional milk.

Our purpose-built nutrition plant is one of the most technologically advanced in the world and is unique in many of its specifications.
Our nutritional plant has been built with a clear objective to be the world’s best, applying rigorous supply, process, and product control protocols at every stage
PATHOGEN MANAGEMENT
• Raw milk is chilled on-farm, transported, and stored onsite in raw milk silos, where it is held below 4.4°C to meet USFDA standards. This temperature control minimises bacterial growth, particularly pathogens.
• Milk reception and separation take place in a fully segregated processing area to prevent cross-contamination.
• A bactofuge is installed to remove bacteria from liquid milk, reduce cell counts, lower heat-resistant spores, and improve overall keeping quality..
WAREHOUSING
• Our specially designed warehouse operates under positive pressure to mitigate the ingress of foreign matter and other contaminants.
• Electric forklifts reduce the risk of emission contamination of finished product and ingredients, improve operator safety, and allow for better ventilation to minimise foreign particle contamination.
• Access to the warehouse is restricted and monitored around the clock. Only authorised personnel are permitted entry, ensuring controlled and secure operations.
• A fully automated de-palletiser enables efficient and hygienic de-palletisation of ingredients onto the conveyor system in preparation for processing.
HIGH SHEAR VACUUM MIXER ensures full homogeneity of ingredients and complete dissolution as the blend moves to the batch storage silos.
OIL FREE COMPRESSION eliminates oil contamination into the process.
WATER CONSERVATION
A significant volume of process water is recovered and recycled through our water treatment facility, which includes:
• Reverse Osmosis plants
• UV in-line units
• Chlorine Dioxide in-line units
Our fully integrated Ingredient Management Systems provide complete track and trace of every ingredient and every process.
A WELL-DOCUMENTED TRACEABILITY SYSTEM identifies the source of all inputs, including raw milk, functional ingredients, and packaging, throughout every stage of production, packaging, and distribution.
DE-HUMIDIFICATION OF AMBIENT AIR reduces environmental variation and enhances the stability of the functional attributes of finished infant formula powders..
DUAL EVAPORATORS provide the flexibility to manufacture a wider range of functional infant formulas, improve equipment efficiency, and deliver excellent quality control.
THE FINAL HEAT TREAT STEP is applied just before converting the liquid concentrate into powder, supporting our philosophy of delivering outstanding infant formula nutrition throughout the entire supply chain.
Fines from the bag house are not reprocessed.
INGREDIENT MIXING WITHIN THE SILO ensures consistent blending and minimises batch variability.
Mataura Valley Milk has a state-of-the-art R & D laboratory integrated into our manufacturing plant, staffed by a highly qualified team focused on continuous innovation and customised formulations for our global clients.
The laboratory is fully equipped with advanced technology and is currently undergoing accreditation to ISO 17025 standards, along with registration as an MPI Recognised Laboratory.
Once approved, the laboratory will have the capability to conduct functional, chemical, and organoleptic testing of milk, intermediate products, and finished goods.
We also partner with world-class, MPI registered and approved laboratories to undertake independent routine testing. These laboratories operate at a scale that gives them access to the latest analytical technologies and global networks for technical support. They are independently audited to international standards, ensuring the testing of our products is independent, reliable, and accurate.
