Publisher’s Note

Greetings,

This special edition of Catalyst Magazine celebrates exceptional men who have profoundly impacted their communities through dedicated service, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment. Inspired by the Biblical account of Nehemiah, who courageously led the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem, CityLight Men on the Wall embodies the spirit of unity, faith, and transformative action.

Our movement spans continents, with vibrant chapters in Africa and Asia, where dedicated men tirelessly work to rebuild schools and churches, bringing hope and renewal to their communities. Their efforts exemplify the strength and resilience of men coming together to create lasting positive change.

At this year’s Catalyst Heritage Luncheon, we are honored to welcome two distinguished leaders, E.W. Cromartie and James Felder, serving as esteemed cohosts of our ambitious recruitment initiative. Together, we aim to engage 100 dedicated men as CityLight Men on the Wall charter members here in the United States. Their leadership and vision are crucial as we build strong foundations and inspire a new generation of community leaders.

We proudly recognize outstanding men who have contributed significantly to their communities, including Thomas Fowler, Gary Becton, James McKinney, Dean Slade, Bernard Byrd, Jeffrey Williams, Sam Perry, Mickey Joyner, George Brown, JB Brown, Shelton Blue, Troy Washington, Lionel 'TK' Kennedy, Clarence Smith, and Glenn Brown.

Join us as we celebrate, empower, and recognize these remarkable men who, like Nehemiah, stand firm on the walls of progress, unity, and faith.

Lift Every Voice and Sing

Lift every voice and sing

Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;

Let our rejoicing rise

High as the listening skies,

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,

Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,

Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet

Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last

Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might

Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand.

True to our God, True to our native land.

The CityLight Men on the Wall promise to become influential agents of positive change worldwide.

Honoring the Legacy of Education: Catalyst Tribute to Historic Black Schools

In May, the Catalyst Heritage Luncheon will shine a powerful spotlight on the historically Black schools that served as beacons of knowledge, resilience, and hope during the segregation era in South Carolina. Under the leadership of preservationist and community leader Felicia Yvonne Young Trower, this year’s luncheon will honor institutions from Fairfield, Kershaw, Newberry, and Richland Counties that provide quality education in the face of adversity.

Among the recognized schools are Gethsemane School in Blair, Brainerd Institute in Chester, Liberty School, and Mather Academy in Camden—each representing a cornerstone of educational opportunity for African American students during Jim Crow segregation. These schools were more than just classrooms; they were places where futures were shaped, selfworth was cultivated, and communities were fortified.

Mrs. Trower, a seasoned advocate for preserving African American heritage, brings a deep reverence and scholarly rigor to the Catalyst Heritage Luncheon. As the Preservation of Historical Family, Institutional, and Organizational Heritage Director at Ecumenical University, she has committed to honoring the stories and structures that speak to the legacy of Black excellence and endurance.

In addition to her work with the luncheon, Mrs. Trower leads several transformative projects. She oversees restoring the historic Thompson House in Fairfield County—a property with deep ancestral and cultural significance. Through her partnership with the CityLight Community Development Corporation, she is also championing the replica reconstruction of the Gethsemane School, ensuring its legacy lives on for future generations.

Her work extends beyond bricks and mortar. Through strategic partnerships and advocacy, she is raising awareness about these schools' vital roles in uplifting generations of African Americans, often with few resources but abundant resolve. Her vision is not merely about remembrance but revival—ensuring these sacred spaces continue to inspire purpose, identity, and pride.

As we gather at the Catalyst Heritage Luncheon, we do more than look back; we recommit ourselves to telling the whole story of Black education in South Carolina —one name, one school, one legacy at a time.

JB Brown, Ph.D. From Humble Beginnings to Cinematic Success

Avisionary filmmaker, educator, and military veteran whose journey from rural South Carolina to cinematic acclaim is as compelling as the stories he brings to the screen.

Born in Barnwell, South Carolina, Dr. JB Brown was the seventh of eight siblings in a family that faced financial struggles. Raised in a crowded three-bedroom home with ten people, he grew up surrounded by adversity. From wearing oversized hand-me-downs and, at times, his sister’s clothes to facing teasing from classmates, Brown's early years were shaped by humility, resilience, and imagination.

Brown’s creative spark ignited at age 12 when he began writing poetry, plays, and short stories. Despite the challenges of a modest upbringing, he taught himself piano and composed over 30 songs, many of which were aired on the radio. Writing became his solace—a therapeutic response to a difficult childhood and the start of a lifelong passion.

After graduating from high school in 1984, Brown enlisted in the U.S. Army, beginning a military career that later expanded to the U.S. Air Force. His service introduced him to the discipline and values defining his leadership style. Yet, upon returning to civilian life, Brown learned that experience alone did not guarantee opportunity. A hiring manager once told him he was the best candidate but lacked a degree. That conversation became a turning point.

At age 40, Brown earned his associate’s degree in Applied Science, then a bachelor’s in Computer Information Management, a Master’s in Education, and ultimately a Ph.D. in Cinema Studies. Each academic

milestone marked a new chapter in his transformation—from military servicemember to scholar and filmmaker.

Today, JB Brown is the CEO and President of JBStar Productions, based in Columbia, South Carolina, where he lives with his wife. He wrote four books, including the children’s story "Poppy, The Maskless AntiBullying Guinea Pig," and the author of 17 scripts. His film "Forbidden Love" has won nine awards and solidified his voice in the indie film world. Other notable projects include "Ultimate Alibi" (2018), "Thy Will Be Done" (2024), and more. In 2021, Columbia Mayor Stephen Benjamin officially recognized November 13 as JB Brown Weekend.

Brown has written and directed nine films and five stage plays and appeared on the popular series "Walker, Texas Ranger." In recent years, he’s embraced roles as a drama teacher, university instructor, and basketball coach, finding fulfillment in mentoring youth. He believes children are easier to work with because they are more open to

learning, free from the ego-driven dynamics often found in adult environments.

Profoundly spiritual and communityminded, Brown is involved with Ecumenical University’s mission in Africa, where he helps build churches and support new pastors. This collaboration with JBStar Productions represents a fusion of faith, purpose, and social impact.

A nationally registered EMT from his time in the Air Force, Brown exemplifies a life of service and perseverance. His philosophies reflect his life lessons: "I do not believe in failure. You may fall, but as long as you don’t let the 'L' in fall become an 'I,' you haven’t failed." His self-awareness and resilience inspire others to keep striving, regardless of the setbacks.

JB Brown’s story is one of reinvention, faith, and boundless creativity. From a small Southern town to international film festivals, his life proves that even the most difficult beginnings can lead to extraordinary destinations. As he continues to write, teach, and inspire, JB Brown stands as a filmmaker and a force for change. His Journey to Success is Inside Charity’s recognition of an accomplished writer, producer, and film director committed to social impact.
