Relief for a Weary Soul

By Tony Evans “I will put My Spirit within you and you will come to life, and I will place you on your own land. Then you will know that I, the Lord, have spoken and done it,” declares the Lord.

H

ow has our nation become so dry in its devotion to God? The answer is simple—we have turned to other things for refreshment. We have tried to encourage ourselves without God. We have turned and walked in the opposite direction, searching for something new and thinking it will satisfy our needs. We fill the emptiness in our lives with people instead of God, and immediately they become like gods to us.

Then, before we know it, they do something to disappoint us, and we immediately feel betrayed and defeated.

In a nation that has the greatest material advantages, we want more and expect to get it.

We’re no longer satisfied with simple things.

We have to have the latest flat-screen television. We have the newest computer, and it does more than we will ever use, and still we cry out for more. We have flashier cars and larger homes with walk-in closets and shelves filled with clothing we can’t even

remember buying. We repaint rooms in our houses and purchase new furniture, and still we feel empty, alone, and in debt.

Only God has can satisfy the deepest longing in our hearts.

Only God has can satisfy the deepest longing in our hearts. Sure, it’s fun to wear a new shirt and feel as though you are looking your best. God isn’t against this. In fact, He wants us to do well in this life. However, He wants us to love Him above all things. He gives good things to His children, but when the good things become objects of worship, we’re headed for trouble.

God will allow us to drift until we wake up and realize that our needs can’t be satisfied by anything or anyone other than God Himself. A new marriage or a new baby won’t relieve the pressure. Many times it only makes it worse.

You can stop the dryness in your life by telling the Lord what you’re facing and how you feel. He understands your needs, but He also knows that you will find true and lasting refreshment and hope only when you live your life for Him

Joseph's

Conspiracy

T

he tremendous effort and painstaking deliberation with which God deals with an individual to prepare him for achieving God’s purpose in his or her life; has certainly been true of Joseph.

his identity from his brothers, Joseph was about to determine whether their actions were genuine or not. He needed to make sure they weren’t simply trying to impress him with their changed ways.

God took Joseph through a myriad of circumstances in order to teach him about the providence of God and to put him in the place where he would be able to accomplish God’s plan for Jacob’s family. It involved many years and many events, not all of which were pleasant. And then what

THE CONSPIRACY In contrast to the conspiracy of hate that

God did in Joseph’s life, He began to do in Joseph’s brothers’ lives. Joseph became an instrument of testing in their lives in order to help them see the reality of their own sins and bring them to a place of humility.

In the banquet hall of Joseph’s house where he has just fed the brothers a generous feast and in the process, he learned that the brothers had gotten over their tendency toward jealousy----they don’t react when Joseph purposely showed favoritism toward Benjamin. By concealing 8

his brothers exercised against him, Joseph’s conspiracy was one of love. It was a conspiracy to bring them closer and closer to a confrontation with their own sin. To this point the brothers don’t know that Joseph is alive and that they are going to have to acknowledge their sin.

As Joseph and his steward had done before, they put the money the brothers paid for the grain back in their grains sacks.

But this time they put Joseph’s own silver cup in the mouth of Benjamin’s sack. The december 2017

test was two-fold; first, how would the brothers respond to having gotten all that grain for free? These were the same men who had sold their own brother years before for twenty shekels of silver.

Second, by putting the silver cup in Benjamin’s sack, how would they treat this youngest of the brothers? Would they attack him for stealing from the Egyptian official and possibly getting them all in trouble, or would they continue to treat him kindly as they did at the banquet?

CONFRONTATION After the brothers had been gone for a while, Joseph sent his steward in pursuit of them and confronted them over the missing silver cup. They responded by reminding him that when they found their money in their grain sacks the first time, they had returned it. If the cup is found in any of the brothers’ grain sacks, that brother shall be put to death and the rest will become the steward’s slaves! But the steward said that only the one who stolen the cup would be his slave, and the rest would go free.

The steward searched the sacks from the oldest to the youngest, Benjamin. And there the cup was found----in the sack of Jacob’s beloved Benjamin.

Then brothers had been cocky in their confidence that no cup would be found in their possession. By the time the steward got to Benjamin’s sack, they were probably already repacking their donkeys with the grains sacks and preparing to leave. Their cocksure attitudes changed immediately to terror as the silver cup came rolling out of Benjamin sack onto the ground.

Genesis 44:13 says the brothers tore their clothes in grief and mourning as they prepared to return to Egypt and face Joseph.

As previously mentioned, Joseph’s goal was to discern whether the brothers were going to stand with him apart from Benjamin and blame him or whether they would stand with him as one family. When december 2017

Benjamin was given the five portions of food at the banquet, they could have been masking their true feelings. The steward had said that all but the guilty party would be set free to return to Canaan, so it would have been a perfect opportunity for the brothers to cut and run----to leave Benjamin to face the music alone. Joseph wanted to find out if their collective character had changed. They had ganged up on him decades ago in Canaan.

CONFESSION Joseph played his role to the hilt: “Did you not know that such a man as I can certainly practice divination?” (Genesis 44:15). Judah spoke up and said what Joseph wanted to hear: “Here we are my lord’s slaves, both we and he also with whom the cup was found” (Genesis 44:16). The brothers were not abandoning Benjamin; they were going to stand together and share his guilt and his punishment.

The brothers know that Joseph and the steward had played a trick on them once before by putting their money back in the sacks. Judah didn’t know the Egyptian ruler is Joseph, but he believes that somehow God is using “the ruler” to toy with them and to bring them to confess their guilt of selling Joseph into slavery years before. Judah was saying, “God is punishing us for what we did to our brother Joseph. We sinned. We are guilty.”

Judah told Joseph the entire story of how their father did not want to release Benjamin to travel to Egypt with them, how their father would die if anything happened to him. So Judah asked Joseph to allow him to become the slave of the steward in Benjamin’s place so that Benjamin might return to their father. I believe it is Judah’s sacrificial spirit here that resulted in his being named by Jacob as the son through whom the Messiah would eventually come (Genesis 49:10).

Lew Wayburn Hope of Israel Columbia

L

ew was born and raised in a Jewish home in Columbia, SC. He was confirmed at Tree of Life Congregation. In his early 20’s, Lew fell in love with and married the angle God sent to protect him, Debe. They have been married now for 35 years. In 1987, Lew was introduced to and came to faith in the Jewish Messiah, and his life has never been the same.

He and his bride have 3 children (plus 1 essentially adopted child) and 10 grandchildren. In addition to being an engineer and inventor by trade, he has served in and led various ministries over the years.

In May of 2014, the Lord led Lew and Debe to dedicate themselves to a new work for Him. That is to see a Messianic congregation established in the Greater Columbia area. Hope of Israel Columbia seeks to be a testimony of God’s faithfulness, ‘to Israel’ and ‘of Israel’.

‘To Israel’, we help Jewish people understand that Yeshua (Jesus) is the Messiah.

As we bring the Good News of Yeshua “to the Jew first, and equally to the Gentile,” it is our aim to see each new believer discipled in their faith and established in a healthy congregation. We plant Messianic congregations with the belief that the most effective long-term testimony of the Good News is a healthy, local congregation.

‘Of Israel’, we desire to work alongside the greater Body of Messiah, bringing the burden of God’s heart for the lost sheep of the house of Israel to the hearts of people in churches. As we are invited to speak at churches, we seek to edify and equip our fellow believers to move forward on the calling of all believers to point Jewish people to their Messiah.

(Romans 11:11) Through sound biblical teaching, we desire to see communities of believers everywhere testifying of the Jewishness of our faith, and the faithfulness of God to His people.

Taking time to seek the face of God and experience His presence from the very depths of your soul. It is by the will of God and only by the will of God that you can be an instrument of this work.

City Light and it’s leaders. Share your passion and love for the Lord Jesus and this mission of prayer with your fellow believers. Allow the call of II Chronicles 7:14 to resonate in your community and the spirit.

Examine your life, the lives of those in your community and the spirit and values by which you live. As you discover the will of God for this generation, we pray that you will join us as we join with Him in complete obedience and submission.

Knock on the door to your heart and the heart of this generation to live The Great Commission. Allow the door of prayer to open the hearts of a dying generation and give hope anew to those who have not heard the Good news.

“The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity.”

These fruits are the result of growth in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These fruits are tendencies rather than mere willingness, because “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” In the person who possesses a Fruit of the Spirit, this willingness bears fruit in the life and behavior of the person.

Charity is love, both of God and of neighbor. It is our love for God above all things for his own sake and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God. Joy is the happiness found in union with the Lord. It is a glimpse of the perfect happiness of heaven that leads us to desire heaven.

Peace refers to dealing justly with the world, as well as remaining in good conscience before God. Patience, also known as long-suffering, refers to the tendency to endure both temptation and suffering without it leading to sin.

Kindness, also known as Benignity, is the tendency toward acting kindly and doing good.

Goodness is the tendency to avoid sin and do good.

Generosity is an openness to sharing one’s own gifts and goods with others. It is the opposite of both gluttony and envy.

Gentleness, also known as mildness, is the tendency to allow provocations to go unanswered.

Faithfulness is standing strong in faith, and strength against diversion away from faith and virtue.

Modesty refers to purity in appearance and self-image.

Self-Control, also known as continence, refers to purity in words as well as the tendency to avoid temptations.

Chastity refers to purity in actions, especially sexual purity. Chastity should not be confused with celibacy, which is the avoidance of marriage and marital acts.

1. Use “You”: One of the most interesting words in any presentation is the word “you.” It grabs attention and helps the listener internalize your comments. Make sure that your comments are presented from the perspective of the audience as much as possible. And remember, that “you” singular has much more punch than the plurals “you all” or “y’all.”

4. Demystify Data: Nothing can make eyes glaze over quicker than lots of statistics or complicated research findings. Put your data in terms that the listener can easily relate to and embrace. At a recent business event, the speaker didn’t do a complicated analysis of earning disparities. Instead, he said: “If we can raise the earnings of South Carolinians just to the national average, that would bring an extra $35 billion in revenue to our state.”

2. R ecommend First, R eason Second: This one tip will double your effectiveness as a presenter. Make your recommendation first, then provide reasons your listener should take your advice, especially when presenting to executives. Instead of, "In March we convened a task force to study employee retention. The task force met every third Thursday...." Begin with something like: “To increase retention, improve employee satisfaction and enhance profitability, the employee retention task force recommends….”

3. Acknowledge A pathy: If your audience is apathetic (or worse, hostile) about your topic, acknowledge that in advance to gain buy-in and perhaps poke fun at 18

5. Sell with Stories: Nothing engages your listener like a good story, well told.

No matter what your topic, your audience will lean forward in their seats when you start a story. Use names and specific details to personalize your story and make it more interesting. Use a case study if possible or create a character to illustrate your points if you’re talking about a general topic. Try something like: “Bob Smith is our typical client. He’s married with two children and he lives in the suburbs. But when he needed immediate help with an insurance claim, our automated system saved him hundreds of dollars and hours of hassle.” december 2017

6. Create Comparisons: Comparisons, analogies and metaphors can take an abstract concept and make it concrete and meaningful. Brainstorm ways to help your audience relate to your points and interest them in your ideas. The best example recently is from the Center for Disease Control’s most recent public service announcement to encourage disaster preparedness: “There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for. Take a zombie apocalypse for example. That’s right, I said z-o-m-b-i-e a-p-o-c-a-l-y-p-s-e. You may laugh now, but when it happens you’ll be happy you read this, and hey, maybe you’ll even learn a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency.”

7. Close with a Call to Action: You have an objective every time you open your mouth to speak. Make sure the audience knows what it is. This is especially true if the audience may be inclined to “gloss over” parts of your talk. Clearly tell the listener what they need to do or think differently: “The next time you receive a sales lead, remember to ….”

Good communicators can find a way to make their audience interested in almost any topic, but it does take work. Add these seven techniques to your arsenal of presentation skills and you can take a boring talk and make it brilliant.

Christ Central’s # 1 Commitment is serving everyone in a spirit of love and respect.

Our devoted volunteers are dedicated to serve in excellence, regardless of how great or small the need.

We are inviting churches, community organizations, and families to join us in showing the impact that love, caring, and sharing can have in the lives of the underprivileged. You can help by simply volunteering your time or resources to bring hope to enhance the lives of others.

Some of the ways to volunteer are: Your organizations can sponsor a day during the month to come out to Christ Central Columbia and provide the lunch meal to our patrons. Providing the lunch meal includes any or all of the following: Providing the volunteers to cook and serve the meal for the day Providing and/or preparing the meal and/ or groceries Providing the entertainment and inspirational message for our patrons to enjoy during the meal.

Sponsoring a Paper Drive to collect items we use on a daily basis in the center.

Sponsor a Winter Coat/Blanket Drive.

Supply baby items such as pampers, wipes, clothes etc.

Monetary donations and contributions toward a cause that will change someone’s life in a positive way. All donations are tax deductible.

Those are just some ways to volunteer toward a good cause. Any other means or methods of volunteering your time and services are greatly appreciated.

Clear Choices

Many are minor with little consequence. “Shall we have pizza or roast beef sandwiches for lunch?” Some are major. We visual a young man, thoroughly in love getting on bended knee and asking his girlfriend to become his wife.

And if it seems evil unto you to serve Jehovah, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve Jehovah. Joshua 24:15

In the Bible we are repeatedly told that God has made significant choices. He chose the children of Abraham to become His special people. He chose to send His Son, Jesus, to be born of Mary and to be raised in that “backwoods” town of Nazareth. He chose for Jesus to die on that cruel cross to pay for our sins.

Today, many years later, we are called both as individuals and families, as well as nationally, to make choices. Will we continue to acknowledge the heritage embedded in the Mayflower Compact, our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution? If not, what choice will we make?

That we are endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights is a fact. Our choice is not about the fact, but will we accept the implications of the fact? If human life is sacredly endowed by God, we should choose to accept His will.

When the liberator, Moses, gave the leadership of Israel to Joshua, it became necessary for Joshua to challenge them about their allegiance to the Lord or to the gods that were worshipped by the pagan inhabitants of the land. Please read what Joshua said.

The Story of Two Brothers - Written by Dennis Henderson

O

ver the years when Daniel and I have spoken together at prayer gatherings or conferences, I mention that we are the modern day version of Mary and Martha, the familiar story of the two sisters found in Luke 10:38-42. Let me take the suspense out – Daniel is in the role of Mary and of course, I am Martha.

Daniel has been given many titles. I remember a couple years back when the students at Liberty University had T-shirts made with a sketch of Daniel and the caption “Prayer Guy.” I have never been described as the “Prayer Guy.” I could easily walk into an AA meeting and say, “Hello, my name is Dennis and I am a workaholic.” I remember actually saying to Daniel, “I’ll work, you pray.” Thus, over the years when it came to prayer, I walked in the shadow of Daniel, learning as I walked.

Back to the biblical story, Martha opened her home for a visit from Jesus.

Wishing to show her love and appreciation for Jesus, it appears that Martha wanted everything to be perfect. Clean house, good food, and a beautiful table setting were the things I am sure Martha desired. It was for Jesus. He was the guest of all guests. He was becoming her Lord and Savior. I cannot see her heart, so I cannot make a lot of judgments on what drove Martha that day. I am sure she was thinking, “I want to do my best for Him.” She could have just been geared differently than Mary; maybe by nature her motor ran faster.

Service may have been the only expression of love with which she was familiar.

Whatever the case, there she was, busy, feeling the pressure of the moment, and growing isolated from the moment. Her work was drawing her focus to herself rather than to Jesus.

Luke gives us a couple of observations.

He mentions in verse 40, “She was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.” What seemed to be important to her, the preparations, became the center of her energy rather than Jesus, the special guest. Feeling the pressure of preparation and performance, she finally bursts out with, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself?” Her busyness had resulted in a self focus of “I am the only one doing anything.” When busyness moves time with Jesus to the side and time working for Jesus moves to the center, it always ends up back to self. Martha was feeling isolated. She felt everything depended on her. Thus, her busy heart moved around the room to criticize Mary, who Jesus noted had found the right thing.

In over fifty years of following Jesus, I have had to keep coming back to this story, because it is my story in so many ways. I love ministry. I love the Gospel. I love the work of seeing people changed from lives of darkness to light. Yet, I have found the Mary and Martha story the tension of my life. I feel secure in my busyness of work.

It is measurable; it is visible. I get a sense december 2017

of accomplishment when I can see the work of my hands. In contrast, the work of my heart with Jesus often times is not immediately visible. It is hard to measure what He is doing as I cannot control it or see it. With dependence on Him through mere expressions of adoration, worship, and cries for help, the focus moves to Him and not me. I continually have to remind myself that Jesus is the focus, not the details of the work. I am no longer in control. He is. I must move to trust in a God that I do not see. This is not natural. For one who has a motor with RPMs that are geared high, this is hard. Thus, Martha and I can walk together often.

Let me quote a passage from Paul Miller’s book, A Praying Life, which describes me and the professing American church: “American culture is probably the hardest place in the world to learn to pray. We are so busy that when we slow down to pray, we find it uncomfortable. We prize accomplishments, production. But prayer is nothing but talking to God. It feels useless, as if we are wasting time. Every bone in our bodies screams, ‘Get to work.’

ing entertained. Television, the Internet, video games, and cell phones make free time as busy as work. When we do slow down, we slip into a stupor. Exhausted by the pace of life, we veg. out in front of a screen or with earplugs.

If we try to be quiet, we are assaulted by what C. S. Lewis called the ‘Kingdom of Noise.’ Everywhere we go we hear background noise. If the noise isn’t provided for us, we can bring our own via iPod. Even our church services can have the same restless energy. There is little space to be still before God.” Possibly you need to hear the soft invitation of Jesus as I do: “Come, sit.” For years I have repeated, “Busyness is not godliness.” The best is at Jesus’ feet. The work will get done.

The project will be completed. Our energy has to be harnessed to be in front of Jesus so that He truly does the work He wants done in our long list of ministry.

I invite you to come along with me today and just sit with Jesus. Just listen. Just worship. Choose the best rather than the busy.

In February 1996, Joe and Gladys Grimaud, along with a group of Columbia area Christians began meeting and seeking God’s direction for our city. The group included Pastors, community leaders, and lay people from different racial, cultural and denominational backgrounds with different talents and gifts. Each member of the group was concerned about the problems and needs of the community, many of which are the result of the breakdown of the family unity. The group knew that there is a wealth of available talent and resources, and that if mobilized, could be used to address the spiritual and physical needs of individuals, families, and the community.

We believe that Churches and the body of Christ should be the focal point of love and compassion in our community and should work together in addressing the needs of the community.

CityLight Columbia organized as a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) corporation in June 1996 to bring churches and the body of Christ together to make a positive impact in our community. Our Mission is “to unify the Christian community by lifting up Christ, evangelizing, disciplining, and impacting the community through the local Church”.

We believe that Churches and the body of Christ should be the focal point of love and compassion in our community and should 24

work together in addressing the needs of the community. CityLight serves as a liaison and a facilitator between Churches, the public and private sectors, and the community at-large to help identify needs and match those needs with available resources. We help Churches and the community to become more vibrant by encouraging them to become actively involved in community outreach and to experience the rewards of helping the less fortunate and those in need.

CityLight Columbia sponsored the Tony Evans Crusade at Williams-Brice Stadium in May 1997 which served as a catalyst for bringing God’s people together in a spirit of revival to empower us to begin the process of bringing moral, spiritual, and economic change to our community. Dr. Evans’ messages during the three nights of the crusade addressed racial reconciliation, one’s personal responsibility in helping to bring about change, family renewal, and the role of the local Church in reaching out to help meet the needs of the community.

The vision that God has given to CityLight is unlimited. Every day, we are seeking new opportunities to reach out into the community, to mobilize the body of Christ, and to match available resources with the needs of the community. As we grow and the opportunities to serve Him increase, we need more volunteers and workers to help fulfill the Mission of CityLight.

TRUE FRIENDSHIP by: Luella Redfern

S

ometimes in life, we are so preoccupied on having true friends, perhaps we should focus on being a true friend. Recently I was feeling kinda lonely. I looked around and there was no one I could call.

Everyone was busy living their life. I asked myself, what makes a true friend? I thought, “A friend in need is a friend in deed,” Then I thought, yes that’s right, 'someone who needs your help becomes especially friendly in order to obtain it'. I was full of my self-centeredness.

These days in the context of social media, the term ‘friend” is often used to describe contacts on facebook and/or twitter, rather than relationships. You may have the ability to send your friend a message, but this is not

ferred communication methods. Society seems to have embraced the increased role technology now plays in our everyday life.

There’s less personal contact with more businesses and educational institutions now days. It seems that we communicate with our doctor, friends, family, colleagues and even complete strangers the same way.

Sometimes, whenever a true friend is around we feel more secure, safe and happy because he or she has become so close to us. It’s really great to have that kind of friend. One thing I know is they can never carry all of our burdens, because they also have theirs to carry. Your best friend today can be your worst enemy tomorrow, and you need to know that they can and

There are some friends that stick closer than a sister, they occupy a large space in your heart so much that you can almost never do without them. I don’t think I have ever experienced that kind of friendship.

Over the years, modern day technology has significantly changed the way we communicate. Originally, the telephone replaced the telegraph. Now cell phones have replaced the home phone, and email is replacing the handwritten letter. The Internet and cellphones top the list as pre26

will fail you. Jesus is the only true friend who will never leave you or forsake you.

He cares for all our needs. He remains the same yesterday, today and forever till eternity (Hebrews 13:8).

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 says "Two are better than one, because they have a good [more satisfying] reward for their labor; For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow.

But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie down together, then they have warmth; but how can one be warm alone? december 2017

And though a man might prevail against him who is alone, two will withstand him.

It’s awesome when you link up with a true friend. Someone who will lift you up not beat you down. I remember when I was in 7th grade, some girls, whom I thought were my friends, were not. I found this out the hard hurtful way. There was a boy name Fred who liked me. I wouldn’t give him the time of day. One of these girls was his neighbor. He told her he liked me. One day after school three girls stopped by my house. They ask if I could go with them to another friend’s house. I ask my mom she said yes and off we went. Little did I know, they had a trick for me.

We took a detour to the Dillon Supply Company because they wanted to show me the neat cotton bins they played in. We climbed up on what appear to be a storage container of some sort. The Dillon Supply Company stored cotton in these bins that locked from the outside. They looked in first, giggled, then told me to look in. I looked in and they pushed me in. It seemed like a long fall but because it was some cotton in it, I wasn’t hurt. But there was Fred waiting and grinning. I was scared to death. He grabbed me and we end up rolling around the cotton. It didn’t take me long to realize what he had on his mind.

I fought him like I was fighting for dear life. Boy, you should have seen him trying to get out of that bin. The girls had locked it and we could not get our. Finally after I had beat him up. The girls open the door.

I never saw him move so fast to get out. I took my time getting out because I knew when I got home, I was going to have to explain to my mom how I got cotton all over myself.

I felt hurt and betrayed. I manage to get most of the cotton out of my hair and off my clothes. My three fair weathered friends left me to walk home alone. I cried all the way. Thank God my mom was not december 2017

home when I arrived, which gave me a chance to clean up. The worst thing about this incident is when I got to school the next morning everyone was pointing and laughing at me. Fred and the girls had told everyone that we did something that we definitely did not do. I was the talk of the school. It was so bad my sister who was in high school several miles away heard about it. And, she was very angry with me.

It really hurt that she believed the gossip.

It was years, as a matter of fact, we were both grown women before we finally talked about this again. Fred moved away shortly after this. I think his mom died and he went to live with his grandmother.

I never saw him again. Two of the girls have passed away now and the third one I see her from time to time when I visit my mom in Dillon. Forty-Eight years later, I still feel a little hurt everytime I talk to her. I wonder how many other girls did those bullies do that too. Some things in life are hard to get over especially when you are hurt by friends.

As women and men of God, there are some important things to consider before making, keeping, or ending certain friendships.

As a hurt little 7th grade girl, I realized that these girls could never be my friends. As they grew to teenagers and adults, their life choices demonstrated that they were unable to be a good friend to anyone.

I believe, we all want to have true friends.

The quality of our friends depend on us. If we want to have true friends, we should be a true friend. If you are a true friend, people will love to be around you and many of them will eventually become your true friends.

It’s almost impossible to change other people. Sometimes it takes a lifetime to change yourself. I believe we change by responding to God’s seeking. There is always a chance of relationship problems. If you are a true friend, you will be there no matter what happens. You will be dependCityLight.org

There are two qualities a good friend must have, trust and loyalty. If you can’t trust your good friend, who can you trust. Good friends don’t talk about each other behind their back. A good friend will not share conversations shared in confidence.

I attended my 41st high school reunion.

I am ashamed to say that, that was the first reunion I ever attended. First I was amazed by the fact that this was the segregated reunion of an integrated school. Dillon High class of 1975 was very diverse.

However, five years after black and white high schools were combined under a Federal court order, integration died at graduation. I asked the questions, why can't there be one reunion? As far as I know, I had lots of white friends. I was quickly told, we we stop inviting them years ago because they never came. A young lady walked up to me and said hi Luella do you remember me. We use to be best friends in high school. I had no idea who she was and I didn’t ask. I waited until someone called her name. I don’t remember being her friend. I guess we had a different concept about being a friend, especially, best friends. I would think if we were best friends in high school, we would have kept in touch. Forty-one years later, I should have remembered her name.

Jesus is the only true friend we can ever have, because he’s ever dependable and reliable, he never sleeps, he never slumbers, he never disappoint, he doesn’t forgets us and he is ever present in time of need.

When you make Jesus your friend, you are no more a servant neither are you a slave, you are now a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a peculiar people called out of darkness into his marvelous light.

It’s wonderful to have great friends! Some days when you are feeling down, they provide lots of laughter and entertainment bringing you joy. You comfort and advise each other when you are sorrowful or in a painful situation. Now there are some who are fair weather friends, we call those associates. Then there are those friends who should be their for you through thick or thin, no matter what, we call those our sister and brothers. Your brother and sisters don't have to be just biological to be considered your sisters and brothers. I call these types of friends the Esther Women of Influence, "siblings by heart".

It took a lot of growing in Christ these last few years for me to realize who my true friends are. However, I am still learning how to be a true friend daily. Some people say, if you find one good, true friend, you've found a treasure for which most people spend their whole lives looking. I am so blessed, I’ve found a few of them. They are the types of ladies who are not afraid to tell me the truth, whether I want to hear it or not. They also hold me accountable. They are also the type that, no matter how many mistakes I make (sometimes the same mistake) they are always there to pray with me, console me and pick up my broken pieces.

I feel very fortunate to have the the Esther Women of Influence to be my friends and my "sisters by faith".
