CITYLIGHT | CROSS STYLE | ECUMENICAL CHURCH & UNIVERSITY

Dear friends, Over the last 20 years, I have served in a leadership position in the Ecumenical Church, CityLight, Cross Style School of Practical Ministry and the Ecumenical University. We have experienced the blessings of God in each endeavor as we sought the manifestation of the will of God. We have grown from local ministries to be used for worldwide impact in the plan of God. The Ecumenical Church has grown from a house church to having worship worldwide. Citylight has grown from an event at Williams Brice Stadium to prayer groups meeting, praying and working in their communities around the globe. Itinerant evangelist, Stephen Manley, has preached and taught on the move for fifty years and now God has responded with Cross Style Schools in over 40 countries. The Ecumenical University has incorporated the Cross Style Message into a school of Cross Style Theology with Dr. Manley as it’s dean. It curates the academic records of 1500 students. These are great examples of what God can do when a man allows himself to be sourced by God. As certain as the hand of God has been ever present in all these endeavors, so has the faithful-

ness of Joe and Gladys Grimaud. Quiet and steadfast they have poured their all into the mission and plan of God. The have led teams of donors, supporters, missionaries, pastors and students to plant seeds of faith in the will and plan of God as expressed by these ministries. From this legacy, we, now, prepare for the next 25 years. The future is filled with the hope we have in Christ Jesus. There is only the Hope in Christ for the next generation, young people who are hungry for the truth. As we prepare to pass the baton, it is our intention to allow God to use us to lay a firm foundation in His body, in prayer, in practical Ministry and in the hearts of Cross Style students. Come and join us in this great adventure of Faith. We are seeking $21 million to build the institutions and infrastructure for the next twenty five years. In Christ, BISHOP REDFERN II PRESIDING BISHOP Ecumenical Church DIRECTOR CityLight International DIRECTOR Cross Style International CHAIRMAN Ecumenical University

Ecumenical Church Local/Worldwide

T

he Ecumenical Church of Christ was founded by Bishop Redfern II in 1995 in response to God’s call to minister to those mentioned in Matthew 25:34-36 ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ For twenty years, the Ecumenical Church has ministered to people who suffered with broken families and relationships, people who were homeless, drug addicted, assaulted by life and who had lost hope. We were interested in people who fell out of church between the cracks and those who never knew church. We didn’t own a church building but held services in homeless shelters, community centers and other churches. There were weekly Bible studies for adults and children with meals served daily. We volunteered daily to help with meeting the needs of these disparate families. We purchased The Little Prayer Chapel in 2015 and started the process of training our members in the Cross Style Message and Life. We offered the homeless, drug addicted, poor and broken an opportunity to be the church, to hold positions in the fami-

6

ly of God. We firmly believe that each of us is worthy to serve because of the redemption and restoration that’s found in Christ. Instead of the least of these being spectators in the House of God, we believe that by the blood of Jesus we are all saved and extended grace that’s sufficient for total and complete restoration. In 2017, we organized 15 separate independent churches with services held in the Little Prayer Chapel. Several members who been with the Ecumenical Church enrolled in the Ecumenical University College of Cross style School of Practical Ministry and studied to become ministers of the Gospel. These students have been ordained and have become pastors of the new Ecumenical Churches. They are responsible for organizing the church body for each church. They first have to organize a Citylight prayer group of twelve and take on the responsibility of discipling them. These disciples become the leadership of the church taking on the positions of deacons, trustees, ushers, committee members, secretary, treasurer and chairman of the lay leadership. Each of these members is studying to live the Cross Style life. As these congregations grow they leave the Little Prayer Chapel and establish the mission and ministry of Jesus Christ with new families and a new building or location as a stand alone worship and community center. The hope of this ministry is to not have church as usual but to awaken a rad-

ical desperate desire to allow God to use us to change a generation. It is not that our methods are radical but rather it is our purpose and intent that are radical. We want to cultivate the “bleed, suffer and die” kingdom mentality. All across the world we are seeing religious groups emerge who are bent on killing and destroying people who are not willing to bow down to their gods. We are the extension of God’s love. We are the antithesis of these groups. It is not by might that we shall overcome but rather by our commitment to bring joy to the world, peace on earth and good will toward all men through Jesus Christ.

Using The Little Prayer Chapel as our prototype, our ministers are broadcasting 15 services live on radio, television and digital media using the Cross Style Theology in the context of the common revised lectionary readings which are used worldwide. The Ecumenical Churches worldwide have started the process of instituting multiple church bodies with multiple pastors following the model of the Little Prayer Chapel 2017 has been a good year and the report from the Ecumenical Church is good.

THE ECUMENICAL UNIVERSITY

T

he Ecumenical University was chartered by Redfern II, Presiding Bishop and General Overseer of the Ecumenical Church of Christ Worldwide, April 11, 2012. The Ecumenical University was chartered in the state of South Carolina as a church under the auspices of the Ecumenical Church of Christ Worldwide to create a formal internal process for training pastors and lay persons, who have had limited access to seminary training. The idea for the University began when Bishop Redfern II was then serving as the International Director of Dr. Stephen Manley’s Cross Style School of Practical ministry. Dr. Manley had developed a system of training pastors and lay ministers with over 300 hours of course materials. Pastors and Lay ministers from over 40 countries were trained with materials that were provided with a television, DVD player and a generator. These training kits were provided to rural churches and groups in undeveloped countries throughout the world. Over the years, the students wanted their studies to be authenticated and their completion of the course materials recognized. We started with a certificate of completion which later became a degree and then to the diploma level. In 2006 we started having graduation ceremonies with cap and gowns. When the students started using their certificates and diplomas as references in their local churches, with the government and as a prerequisite for ordination and ministry work, it

10

became clear that a central worldwide facility was needed to curate their educational accomplishments. With the formation of the Ecumenical University, a worldwide system is being created to standardize training, grading of course work, recording students’ certificate, degree and diploma achievements. The method of delivery of course materials has also evolved into a smaller digital footprint. We’ve moved from 160 DVD’s to a single jump drive and from there to a complete online educational experience. We are now using tablets, e-readers, computers and smart phones. There are still teachers who still visit small rural communities that are off the grid. The University adopted the curriculum of the Cross Style School of Practical Ministry and instituted the Cross Style College with Dr. Stephen Manley as it’s Dean and Chief Academic Officer. The College awards degrees in Cross Style theology. The University is pursuing other opportunities to develop other colleges within it’s system to meet the educational needs of the modern missionary minister/pastor for this season and the age to come. We plan to build 30 campuses in 14 countries to train the new missionaries and community development agents for the next generation. Each campus will cost us roughly $150,000 to complete. It will have a Welcome Center/ Admin Block, a Main Hall/Auditorium, Health Center, Classroom Block, facilities for nursery and primary school,

Dormitory, Cafeteria, La maison de l’évêque and a technology package. In East Africa, there will be 6 Ecumenical University campuses in Uganda, 2 in Kenya, 2 in Tanzania, 2 in Malawi, 2 in Burundi, 2 in Rwanda and 1 in D.R. Congo. In central/west Africa, there 1 campus in Cameroon, 1 in Ivory Coast, 1 in Ghana, 1 in Liberia and 1 in Sierra Leone. Ecumenical University will have 2 campuses in Jamaica and 6 in India for a total of 30 campuses in all at $150,000 each. The Ecumenical University is also serving the Ecumenical Church, Cross Style students and CityLight Prayer groups in India. Over 10 years ago we joined with Jesus Mission to purchase a prayer mountain in Southern India. From that beginning over 3,000

CityLight Prayer groups have been established. Some of those Prayer Groups have become churches and others continue their training through Jesus Mission Bible Calls College. The Jesus Mission has established a cable television station for gospel out reach and Training. Our plans are to build 100 campuses throughout India. In addition to Seminary and College training, the facilities are also being used to teach pastors and others trades to support themselves and their families. Masonry, Beauty and Barbering, Sewing, Nursing, Midwifery are a part of the vocational curriculum. The campuses will also be used as medical centers, distribution centers for food and clothing as well other needed supplies.

ECUMENICAL UNIVERSITY

In the 2017 the University initiated 5 new colleges providing sources of study to impact the world through Jesus Christ: The College of Cross Style Theology formed the cornerstone of the curriculum. Stephen Manley was appointed Bishop and Dean of the Cross Style College. The College of Nonprofit Leadership and Development was established. Nonprofit organizations, Non Government Organizations, and foundations ofter pursue the work of compassionate ministry but not with Jesus as its focus or primary mission. We want to prepare our students to be compassionate minded but never lose focus of the impetus of the love of Christ and His mission of reconciling lost souls to the Father. Rev. James P. LaRose will serve as Dean of this endeavor. Greg Gunn is noted for his work with the family worldwide. He has consented to serve as our dean as we develop the College of Human Development

12

and Family Studies. With the cultural assault on family and the need for Bible clarity for ministers Gunn offers the baseline declaration needed for Cross Style families. The College of Peace and Conflict Studies and the College of Community Health and Intervention were established to begin the great work of instilling Christ in third world countries where tribal and civil conflict along with health issues and disease create havoc in the lives of their citizens. In 2017, we completed the multipurpose center and started work on the Classroom block and dormitory on the prototype campus of the Ecumenical University in Magamaga, Uganda. In Masindi, we completed the Multipurpose building on the second Ecumenical University Campus. In 2017, we had 180 students to graduate with certificates or diplomas in East Africa.

Community Leaders from the seven pillars of society were speakers for the event. Each breakfast is accompanied by the publishing of the Catalyst Magazine highlighting programs and projects of the month. New prayer group were organized locally and internationally. The CityLight Prayer Groups are started by a leaders who organized at least 12 friends to come together in discipleship training. These groups meet at least once a month to study, pray and to work on some community project. In East Africa several groups building churches, widows’ homes and doing micro lending and financing projects. There are four designated prayer

group for men, women, teen girl and pre-teen girls. Men on the Wall groups are based on the exploits of Nehemiah in the Bible. The men work together in prayer to build up their communities. The Esther Women of Influence prayer group based their group on the courage of the biblical character Esther and her efforts to save her people. The Esther Teens and Daughters of Ruth are groups for young girls who are being discipled in the Cross Style message and Lifestyle. There is also group organized in like manner to Save the Mustang wild horses. A group of Christian horse lovers were praying about the conditions under which these horses were brutally rounded up and put in pens for slaughter. They organized their prayer groups to respond to this issue. CityLight has its annual planning and development retreat for all groups in January.

n February 1996, Joe and Gladys Grimaud, along with a group of Columbia area Christians began meeting and seeking God’s direction for our city. The group included Pastors, community leaders, and lay people from different racial, cultural and denominational backgrounds with different talents and gifts. Each member of the group was concerned about the problems and needs of the community, many of which are the result of the breakdown of the family unity. The group knew that there is a wealth of available talent and resources, and that if mobilized, could be used to address the spiritual and physical needs of individuals, families, and the community. CityLight Columbia organized as a non-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation in

We believe that Churches and the body of Christ should be the focal point of love and compassion in our community and should work together in addressing the needs of the community. June 1996 to bring churches and the body of Christ together to make a positive impact in our community. Our Mission is “to unify the Christian community by lifting up Christ, evangelizing, disciplining, and impacting the community through the local Church”. We believe that Churches and the body of Christ should be the focal point of love and compassion in our community and should work together in addressing

the needs of the community. CityLight serves as a liaison and a facilitator between Churches, the public and private sectors, and the community atlarge to help identify needs and match those needs with available resources. We help Churches and the community to become more vibrant by encouraging them to become actively involved in community outreach and to experience the rewards of helping the less fortunate and those in need. CityLight Columbia sponsored the Tony Evans Crusade at Williams-Brice Stadium in May 1997 which served as a catalyst for bringing God’s people together in a spirit of revival to empower us to begin the process of bringing moral, spiritual, and economic change to our community. Dr. Evans’ messages during the three nights of the crusade addressed racial reconciliation, one’s personal responsibility in helping to bring about change, family renewal, and the role of the local Church in reaching out to help meet the needs of the community. The vision that God has given to CityLight is unlimited. Every day, we are seeking new opportunities to reach out into the community, to mobilize the body of Christ, and to match available resources with the needs of the community. As we grow and the opportunities to serve Him increase, we need more volunteers and workers to help fulfill the Mission of CityLight. If you would like to join the efforts of CityLight, you can begin by praying for us. You can become a contact person in your own church body to help us form a spiritually powerful and effec-

ABOUT CROSS STYLE

H

ave you ever wondered what it would have been like to have lived in the first century? Imagine if you had the opportunity to walk with Jesus like the New Testament disciples. What would it have been like to sit a few feet from Jesus and listen to the Sermon on the Mount; ask questions about the parables you heard; daily walk with Jesus. Cross Style and the School of Practical Ministry have embraced the roots of Biblical Christianity: combining the teaching of God’s Word with the movement of God to touch a hurt and lost world. Our typical methods of Christian education have failed to produce New Testament disciples. Isn’t it time we approached discipleship like Jesus did? Take a few believers, immerse them in the Word and lead them out into the world. Light shining in darkness; not light sealed within the walls of a college campus. Three years with Jesus, that is what we need. Believers who walk away from the normal life proclaimed as the American dream and embrace the dream of Jesus. “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). HAVE YOU HEARD THE CALL OF JESUS? Do you read your Bible and say, “Why don’t I look like the disciples of the first century?” Do you desire to be a Stephen, Philip, Timothy, Silas, Barnabas, Theophilus, or Cornelius? Then

study the same way the early Church did: men of God mentoring and training you while living the life of a disciple before you. This is the vision of the School of Practical Ministry. We are not teaching a philosophy. We are living the Cross. You will bleed, suffer and die while God changes the world through you. If you are seeking comfort, ease, and a prosperous future, then the School of Practical Ministry is not for you. If you want to know what it really means to be Christ-like—a living Sacrifice and a true disciple—then perhaps you found a home. CROSS STYLE: WHERE CHRIST IS ALL Cross Style is intensely focused upon Jesus Christ and the Word of God. We believe that He should be our focus, our delight, and our all. The wonder of Christianity is the fact that the outside God has come to be inside our personal lives—He is the resource which enables us to live far beyond ourselves. This intimate relationship with the indwelling Christ is at the heart of Cross Style. We believe the Bible reveals Jesus as a bleeding-suffering Messiah who came with a lifestyle of continually pouring His life out to the world around Him, which culminated at the cross. This lifestyle of the cross—never think about oneself, pour your life out, bleed, suffer, and die—was the

flow and tone of the life of Jesus. We believe in order for this to take place, one must be sourced (indwelt) with the Spirit of God (as seen at Pentecost) as we live in constant dependency upon and absolute surrender to Him. Simply, it is allowing the life of Jesus to capture us so that He lives and produces His life through us as we abide in Him. Simply, it is allowing the life of Jesus to capture us so that He lives and produces His life through us as we abide in Him. HISTORY OF CROSS STYLE Dr. Stephen Manley began full-time itinerant evangelism in 1968 under the name Crusade Evangelism, later becoming Stephen Manley Evangelistic

Association. In 1987, Stephen began taking interns each summer to train them in the study the Word and provide a Biblical and practical theology of ministry. Cross Style Global Ministries developed out of the summer internships as several interns wanted to link together in the ministry of the Word. Beginning in the 1990s with a desire to connect, train, and facilitate the reproduction of the Cross Style message around the world, Cross Style has grown to include several evangelists, ministry partners, over 180 international training centers, the School of Practical Ministry, the Cross Style Church, and the Cross Style Center. WHAT IS THE “CROSS STYLE”? We have discovered through the study

CROSS STYLE

of God’s Word and our personal relationship with Christ an attitude which is the basis of the Kingdom of God. It is the attitude of the cross. Christ did not live His own life but surrendered His life to the Father. This surrender was so complete it could be called “death.” Thus the death of Christ on the cross was a physical display of the style of His life. Jesus did not operate on His own or out of His own resource but lived in the continual flow of what the Father would do through Him. In other words, the cross was more than an event one day in the life of Jesus; it was and is His continual lifestyle. This style was manifested in His constant response to the will and leading of the indwelling presence of the Father, through the Spirit. Jesus did not operate out of His own resource but lived in the continual flow of what the Father would do and say through Him (see John 5:19, 30). This lifestyle of the Cross—the “cross style”—is still the lifestyle of Jesus, which He now desires to reproduce as He comes to indwell us through His Spirit. As Jesus lived in this world, so we live in constant response to His will and leading in us—not operating out of our own resources—but in the continual flow of what He would do through us for a time such as this. If we produce a Christianity which is a product of our own discipline and action, we have not produced Christianity but a religion. Through the indwelling of the Spirit of Christ, He will live His life through us. The wonder of Christianity is the outside God who has come to be inside our personal lives. He is sourcing us which enables us to live far beyond

our own ability. This intimate relationship with the indwelling Christ is the heart of Cross Style. CROSS STYLE IS MESSAGE-DRIVEN The facilitation of this message takes place through a variety of means, including: Preaching and teaching from our faculty, pastors, and itinerant evangelists Cross Style Church in Lebanon, Tennessee – which is our base for ministry for students within the School of Practical Ministry International Training Centers – we are dedicated to the reproduction of the Biblical message around the world for informal pastoral training and education School of Practical Ministry – a Jesus and Biblically focused school that facilitates growth, learning, transformation, and ministry. While academic education is important, the Cross Style School of Practical Ministry moves beyond academics to emphasize intimacy with Jesus, sourcing of the Spirit, saturation within the Word of God, the radical transformation of one’s life lived in response to Jesus, and the practical outflow of ministry on a dayto-day basis. Online classes and resources, in conjunction with the School of Practical Ministry, to facilitate growth, transformation, and intimacy with Jesus for those who cannot attend the school in person. Resources and materials, including books, CD’s, DVD’s, and video courses/curriculum for training in saturation Bible study, theology, and the Cross Style message.

ABOUT STEPHEN MANLEY

S

tephen has found through the saturation of the Word the message of the cross. It is beyond an event; it is a style. Thus, the cross is not a piece of wood or an emblem, but it is the heart of the person of Christ. Cross style is the Christ style. He must be central. As an international evangelist, he has taken this message to the world. Expositional preaching is cross-cultural and meets the need on every level.

dicted and obsessed Jesus pusher. There seems to be no way to quit. But who would want to?

Note: the following article/biography was written for the Nazarene Evangelist Perspective Magazine, published in Winter/Spring 2012. Used by permission.

THE FOUNDATION Stephen Manley, born July 18, 1942, grew up in the home of an Indiana Methodist pastor, which provided the basis for his early spiritual growth. Stephen received his call to ministry at the age of seven and began filling his father’s pulpit at the age of eleven. But as a young man entering high school, he was conflicted and torn with the reality of his spiritual life.

BIOGRAPHY OF STEPHEN MANLEY Stephen Manley is a Jesus Pusher. It sounds a bit odd perhaps; some people “push” drugs or alcohol, sex or entertainment, and I guess in our own ways we all have something we “push.” But I have met few individuals with such an intense focus on one thing. For Stephen Manley, his one thing, his only passion, his single desire is Jesus. In his own words: I am a Jesus pusher!!!! I am an undaunted, courageous, stouthearted, bold, adventuresome, brave, fearless, gallant, heroic, lionhearted, unafraid, unflinching, valiant Jesus pusher. I cannot help myself. He is startling and He has overwhelmed me. I do not speak of ideas about Jesus or historical information concerning Him. I speak about Him. I am a Jesus pusher!!!! I am a mastered, possessed, ad-

26

And Stephen does everything he can to “push” Jesus on everyone. No, Stephen is not aggressive, mean, or harsh, but he is intense, focused, and dedicated. Perhaps that’s because of the foundation God laid in his life at a young age.

There must be something more. During the lunch hour one afternoon, Stephen stole away from the high school and walked across the street to his dad’s church, hiding in a classroom to think and pray. There was no emotional surge, no lights in the sky, no booming voices, but Stephen left the church radically altered in heart and mind; Christianity is about intimacy with Jesus! Stephen concluded if the essence of Christianity is oneness with Jesus – the outside God getting to be inside, living and sourcing one’s life – then it is critical to keep one’s focus upon Jesus throughout the day, not

STEPHEN MANLEY

STEPHEN MANLEY merely a few minutes each morning in devotions and prayer. As a way to develop such a habit of focus, Stephen decided every time the school bell rang he would pray: “Thank you Jesus for living inside of my life.” This became so much fun he decided every problem he had, he would bring to Jesus and allow Him to be a part of the solution. Soon, he involved Jesus in every good thing; desiring His involvement and activity moment-by-moment throughout the day. During these formative high school years, Stephen devoured every book he could get his hands on about the depths of intimacy with Christ. It was then he discovered he did not invent the concept of “practicing God’s presence,” but found great encouragement by those who had written about such a life long before his own. This concept became a growing aspect in young Stephen’s life. He was constantly growing in intimacy and oneness with Jesus in an attitude of surrender and dependency. None of his reading compared to his desire for the Word of God, which became the bedrock and platform for Stephen’s life. Stephen found that as he dove into the written Word (Bible) he was diving into the Living Word (Jesus). The Bible was not a drea-

ry book to study in order to prepare sermons, it was an exciting avenue through which he could experience the living Person of Jesus, develop deep intimacy with Him, and be continuously pressed and transformed by Truth (Jesus). As he is so fond of saying, “We do not handle the Word of God; it handles us.” Even now, some fifty years later, the Word continues to become more precious and important in his life. At age seventeen, now attending Taylor University and pastoring a local Methodist church, Stephen met, and two years later, married Delphine Oliver. For the next five years, Stephen and Delphine ministered in the pastorate of both the Methodist and United Missionary Church Denominations. While in the pastorate, the Manley’s adopted their first child, Stephen Christopher Manley, in March 1967. The following year, July 1968, they adopted their second child, Evangeline Faith Manley (Vangie). The expansion of the Manley family came at a critical time in Stephen and Delphine’s call to ministry. After pastoring for seven years, Stephen, now twenty-four, made the leap into full-time itinerant evangelism, which became his call for the next forty-one years. For his first four years in evangelism,

Stephen traveled alone. In 1971 he moved his ministry under the umbrella of the Church of the Nazarene; and in 1972, Stephen brought his wife and children onto the road, where they ministering together for the next ten years. Again in 1982, Stephen found himself traveling alone as the two children, now in their high school years, stayed at home with Delphine. As young Steve and Vangie attended high school, Delphine established and administered the office for Stephen Manley Evangelistic Association (SMEA), based out of their home in Upland, Indiana. It was only after Steve joined the army and Vangie graduated high school that Delphine joined Stephen back on the road.

For the next twenty years over 65 interns experienced life on the road with Stephen and Delphine Manley – seeing holiness, a servant-hearted lifestyle, and evangelism lived out in day-to-day living. Since the program’s inception in 1987, Stephen had a desire to begin a one-year school of practical ministry that would invest, train, and mentor a new generation of people called to ministry. His desire was to give individuals an opportunity to learn how to study the Word, experience growth and transformation, and provide practical ministry training

The international arm of SMEA began in February 1985, continuing for the next fifteen years. Stephen and Delphine dedicated nearly three months of every year to international evangelism, traveling throughout Africa, Central and South America, and Europe. In 1989 they spent six months within nine different countries in Africa. These trips often consisted of pastoral training during the day and evangelistic meetings in the evenings. In addition, the Manley’s began an evangelist intern program, taking young men and women on the road with them during the summer months. The emphasis of the intern program was on practical ministry as well as Biblical training and transformation. The interns would minister to the children and teens at the summer camps and church meetings Stephen preached at, while attending a daily one-hour training with Stephen that included sessions on: theology, evangelism, saturation Bible study, practical ministry, and sermon preparation.

within a needy community. However, the desire for the school would have to percolate for a few years. In 1986, Nazarene Bible College invited the Manleys to teach at the school, even with their busy preaching schedule. During winter semesters, Stephen and Delphine would live in their RV in Colorado Springs so Stephen could teach Monday night through Wednesday morning and then catch a flight to preach at a revival meeting Wednesday night through Sunday. was also an adjunct professor teaching under Verla Lambert in the Women’s Study Series during several of those NBC years between 1986 and 1992. The Lord soon pointed Stephen and Delphine toward Tennessee. In December of 1998, they responded to the Lord’s leading and moved SMEA’s ministry headquarters from Upland, Indiana to Lebanon, Tennessee; not realizing at the time that this would become the location of the practical ministry school Stephen had long felt

a divine stirring over. THE FUTURE After 41 years in itinerant evangelism, the Manleys felt a clear call from God to come off the road for the purpose of starting the Cross Style School of Practical Ministry. The basis for this school required a church body to partner in the lives of the students and in the ministry training. In September 2009, twenty-two years after the dream began, Cross Style Church

of the Nazarene was established in Lebanon, Tennessee with Stephen as the lead pastor. Over the last several years, Cross Style Church has aggressively ministered within the community. Whereas some churches are inward focused, Stephen has wanted from the beginning for the pastoral staff, the congregation, and ministry students to be outward focused. The church now runs an emergency-housing program for the homeless and needy, provides food boxes and serves a daily free hot buffet dinner to the community. Cross Style is invested in nursing homes, the community little league, the local Kiwanis Club, and has recently started a transformation program for those with addictions and people coming out of prison or jail. The ministry opportunities have been expanding and opening up in ways that can only be ascribed to Jesus. Now that a ministry foundation has been laid in the community, Stephen and the Cross Style team officially launched the Cross Style School of Practical Ministry in 2013. The outflow and ministry potential as well as the practical investment in the lives of these students cannot be overstated. Students spend between a semester to two years at the school and are grounded in the Word of God and learn how to practically live the Truth of Scripture out in practical ministry. It is the passion of everyone in Cross Style, especially Stephen, to have the opportunity to invest in and train up the next generation of leaders, pastors, evangelists, missionaries, and ministers. As such, the Cross Style School of Practical Ministry is focused on three types of individuals: high school grad-

uates who want to spend a summer, semester, or year grounding themselves in the Word to have a Biblical filter before entering college; individuals called to ministry and want practical ministry training; and laymen who want to take their depth and intimacy with Jesus and their Biblical understanding to another level. Summer internships, much like the original evangelist intern program Stephen began, are still available for those who desire to spend a summer immersing themselves in the Word of God and learning servant-hearted ministry through practical hands-on experience. Stephen, now in his 70s, has joked that he has been doing things backwards. Often pastors retire into evangelism but he has been slowly moving out of evangelism to become a full-time pastor. Stephen still travels in evangelism, averaging one meeting a month and several camps throughout the summer, but his focus has become the church, school, and community within Lebanon, Tennessee. If you were to ask him when he might consider retiring for good, he would respond with a smirk and tell you it will never happen. And after a lifetime of full-time ministry, you might think burnout might become an issue, but long ago Stephen found the solution for burnout: getting into the Word of God. As he says, you never hear a pastor or leader express how exhausted he/she is, and follow that with “let me tell you of the riches I’ve been discovering in the Word, how Jesus has been transforming my life, and the intimacy I’ve been experiencing with Him.” Burnout is impossible when one’s life is built upon the foundation of the Word and intimacy with Jesus. For Stephen, his life is wrapped up in a total saturation of Jesus and the Word

30

of God. Time in the Word is more than an activity or duty to schedule in his day. It is the delight of his heart and the focus throughout his day because it draws him deeper into intimacy with Jesus Christ. He wants his “moment-by-moments” saturated with the Person of Jesus and the Word. He longs for Jesus to ever increase and expand in and through His life. Stephen’s life, testimony, and preaching has been used throughout the last six decades to touch, influence, and transform the lives of countless people around the world. But in honest humility, Stephen downplays himself in order to lift up and “push” Jesus. His life is not his own; it is the stage upon which Christ acts, the glove Jesus wears, the voice through which Jesus proclaims Himself to the world, the hands Jesus uses to touch, minister, and love a hurting and needy world. Stephen is a Jesus pusher. He has no other focus than Christ. “Jesus is present in every situation of my life. There is no conversation in which I do not feel His presence. He participates in all my recreation. He is everywhere I go. Who would want to be without Him? He is the protection for my life. He is the fragrance I constantly smell. He is the flow of my spiritual blood giving me life. He is my constant nutrition making me healthy. I cannot survive without Him. I am a Jesus pusher!!!! I want to push Him on you. I want you to join me in this obsession. You do not have to work at it; it is not a discipline. It is as natural as breathing. Please let Him pull you to His heart.” –Stephen Manley *Article written by Nathan Johnson and Jeremiah Bolich *

VISION FOR THE ECUMENICAL CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES

T

he vision for the U.S. Ecumenical Churches is to raise a generation of disciples who live the Cross Style life of bleeding, suffering and even dying to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our vision is the purchase 20 churches in 13 states modeled after the Little Prayer Chapel we have established in Columbia, SC. The Little Prayer Chapel (LPC) is a small church building seating less than a hundred. It serves as a community center, hosting programs and activities, a place to serve the poor, the homeless, latch key children, and senior citizens. The Little Prayer Chapel is home to 15 separate incorporated churches who meet, worship and serve from the one church building. The churches are the First Ecumenical Church, Nehemiah Ecumenical Church, Epiphany Ecumenical Church, Victory Ecumenical Church, Sacred Word Ecumenical Church, Crucible Ecumenical Church, Esther Ecumenical Church, Abundant Life Ecumenical Church, Citylight Ecumenical Church, Cross Style Ecumenical Church, Cross Over Ecumenical Church, Catalyst Ecumenical Church, Evangelical Ecumenical Church, Citadel of Hope and Community Ecumenical Church. The building serves as a church incubator to disciple, teach and train pastors, lay leaders and church members to fulfill the call of the Great Commission. Each church is started from a prayer group of a leader and 12 members modeled after Jesus and the 12 disci-

32

ples. This group receives training from the Ecumenical University on how to be the church in the 21st century. By having more than one congregation sharing the building it shifts the focus from the notion of ‘our church” to being a part of the whole body of Christ “where the disciples held all things in common.” The plan is for each congregation to grow in service to their neighbors, membership, finances and maturity where they can leave the little Prayer Chapel and established themselves in another location in the city. Each congregation will broadcast their services on radio, television and on digital media. The weekly messages will be taken from the annual scripture outline of the common revised lectionary. Each Little Prayer Chapel will produce 15 broadcasts of ministers preaching from the 4 scriptures assigned for that week. All of these broadcast are archived at the Ecumenical University and made available worldwide for pastors, students, lay members, church officers, ministers and unbelievers. Our plan is to purchase a Little Prayer chapels in a major city in 13 states; West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. The original Little Prayer Chapel is in Columbia, the capital of our home state of South Carolina. We will establish a Little Prayer in the other 7 metropolitan areas of the state; Greenville, Aiken, Rock Hill, Florence, Myrtle Beach, Orangeburg and

Charleston. This brings the total number of Little Prayer Chapels to 20 with 15 congregations each. The total number of Ecumenical church congregations in the south east will be 300. It is our expectation that in ten years each of these congregations will have matured in leadership to have relocated to their own location. Some will replicate the Little Prayer Chapel while others will go on to be standing congregations.

The Little Prayer Chapels will provide intern opportunities for our international Pastors to come to the U.S.and learn to live a servant leader’s life as missionaries to the local communities we serve. The Ecumenical University will serve as an intercity, interstate and even an international exchange for teaching, training and deploying church leaders to the mission field worldwide.

The cost of buying a small church is about $50-150,000. We have averaged it to $100,000 each. We have budgeted $25,000 for repairs and renovations. We have set aside $25,000 for kitchen upgrades and electronics and a simple sound systems. This brings the total for each location to $150,000.

VISION FOR AGAPE TRAINING CAMP

T

he vision for an Ecumenical Training Camp is centered in the idea of a rural residential training facility for local and international ministers. The camp is an extension of the Ecumenical Church worldwide and the Ecumenical University. The camp supports residential training for leaders of the 300 expectant congregations in the Little Prayer Chapels across the southeastern United States. In addition, it is to serve as a bridge community for ministers coming over 80 countries where we have prayer groups, Ecumenical churches and students from our Ecumenical campuses in other countries. The campus is on 43 acres of land in the Batesburg-Leesville community of South Carolina. There is housing for three hundred in camp style barracks, family accommodations for twenty five families, a cafeteria, church worship center, classrooms, multipurpose building, gymnasium, staff housing, faculty housing, swimming pool and a lake. On the property we will established a production studio for audio

and video recording of ministers in the local language. With so many languages and cultures, it will be an educational experience for Americans to become acquainted Christians from different languages and cultures from other regions of the world. While providing week end training and educational experiences for U.S. based Ecumenical pastors, ministers, church officers, members, the camps promises to be to be a refuge and a retreat for members of the Body of Christ. The camp is being sold by the Church of God in Prophecy. The sale price of the Camp was 2.5 million dollars. Someone donated the land and money for construction of the church’s new larger camp. As a result of this donation, the church has reduced the property to 1.5 million dollars. It is our plan to raise the funds to purchase the camp by the end of first quarter of the year. We want to prepare for the summer youth programs and camp revival meetings being held this year.

The Camp is for sale at $1,500,000

I

n east Africa, there is a considerable amount conflict around religion. We have heard about the rise Islamic terrorism and the persecution of Christians but to better understand this, a brief glance at history would help. From the deal that Idi Amin made with Muammar Gaddafi, declaring Uganda an Islamic state to receive military and financial support, muslims were empowered in the government and by the government destroy churches and take all the possessions of Christians because Christians were declared enemies of the state. With this alliance Gaddafi sent millions of dollars to Uganda and other East African countries to build mosques and schools to educate muslims. Christians were not given free access to government, business, education, travel or financial resources. It was not until nearly 30 years later under the government of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the NRM that born again Christians were recognised by the Ugandan Constitution. This opened the door to freedom to worship and be recognised as a religious entity but the lack of resources and education has kept Christian poor and suffering. Many denominations have sent missionaries and resources for their upkeep but only a few have invested financial resources to building churches and schools. Muslims ridicule Christians for having papyrus churches and a God no stronger than paper. Usually donations sent to East Africa end up in National of-

There is a remnant that has remained faithful and true to the mission and message of Christ. We have joined with these believers to first train and educate ministerial leadership by making Bible training available in the rural areas. We are building Ecumenical University’s Cross Style Bible College campuses and churches throughout the region. We are building Christian primary and secondary school with job training skills. We are using bricks instead of mud and straw. The response has been amazing. These campuses become the hub of these communities and spark development. Electricity and water resources soon follow the building of a church, college and primary school. The people experienced the Hope that we have in Christ. The scenario we have described is one most familiar in most of the countries that we serve. The importance of establishing an institutional presence and the resources to empower local Christians with the ability to educate themselves, provide healthcare, and job skills become crucial to the growth of the church and ministry. We plan to build 30 campuses in 14 countries to train the new missionaries and community development agents for the next generation. Each campus will cost us roughly $150,000 to com-

VISION OF CROSS STYLE INTERNATIONAL HEADQUARTERS & SCHOOL OF PRACTICAL MINISTRY IN LEBANON, TENNESSEE

“At the Cross Style School of Practical Ministry we have embraced the roots of Biblical Christianity: combining the teaching of God’s Word with the movement of God in touching a hurt and lost world. We are not teaching a philosophy. We are living the Cross Style. You will bleed, suffer and die while God changes your world through you.”

D

r. Stephen Manley has traveled from church to church week to week for more than 40 years. The Cross Style message has been more than a sermon, it has been his lifestyle. His 50 years of ministry has been for the development of the Cross Style School of Practical Ministry, where his message has reached believers in 80 countries, translating his messages in hundreds of languages. Dr. Manley firmly believes that ministry and teaching can and should not exist separate and apart from the church. Over the last 40 years he has discipled many new itinerant evangelists and welcome many new students to the Cross Style school. He ventured into ministry with the poor, the homeless, the addicted and even with the sex offenders. This new idea of a school of practical ministry had to be redefined in light of his real world encounters. Establishing two churches in Lebanon, Tennessee to serve the needs of a diverse population who desperately desired a closer, more intimate relationship with God and change in their lives.

Starting with audio tapes, moving to cd’s and then dvd’s he shared the message with Christians worldwide. With the advent of the internet, computers, smart phone, podcasts, flash drives and a host of other innovations, ad hoc classes were organized by local ministers overseas. Schools were built and graduations were held. What started out as one man responding to the call of God on his life became a mammoth international undertaking. In planning for the next twenty five years, a more intentional approach is to be taken. To curate the instructional materials, students, graduates , interns and evangelists of the last fifty years, new institutional methods are needed for the Cross Style Headquarters and the Cross Style School of Practical Ministry. With this in mind, the plan is to purchase the campus of a mega-church to facilitate a Cross Style Church of 1100 members, hundreds of student interns from all over the United states, a radio and television studio, classroom and conference space with housing for students and faculty. We have identified a property in Lebanon, Tennessee that meets all of our ministerial requirements for the next twenty five years. We plan to purchase this property and transition into bigger, better and greater things.

The cost of the property is $3,500,000 with a 1,500,000 transition cost for a total of:

$5,000,000 38

VISION THE VISION OF A CROSS STYLE FARM

T

he dream of a School of Practical Ministry required the planting of a church. Lebanon, TN became the location of this church plant. One of the first aspects of practical ministry became the “homeless.” These individuals became a part of the church family. When we moved to the present church location, the arrangement for securing the building was to provide construction remodeling. This remodeling was conducted and organized by the “homeless.” This free labor and insight was crucial in the completion of the project. For two years this ministry took place. We began to provide housing and meals for them at the church. In the course of time, it became evident that organization and structured was need. For safety it became evident we must house the “homeless” in another structure, if we were going to start the School of Practical Ministry in the church structure. An old church became available in another section of time. This gave us the opportunity of not only expanding this ministry but also ministering to another community in our town. Out of this the Cross Style Center was established and additional houses were purchased and

remodeled in the area. Upon becoming assistant Chaplain in Wilson County Jail contact with men and women needing assistance in housing, jobs, food, and etc expanded. This began to supply a steady stream of people for the “transitional center.” As this project began to take shape, Kenny Kleeman from Hoyleton, IL. became involved in the Cross Style Ministry. He desired to establish his farm as an additional location for the Cross Style Center to create a safe environment and work. He owns 210 acres he wants to donate to the ministry. These acres will be placed in an “Irrevocable Trust” with the ministry as the beneficiary. Kenny will continue to farm the land and train leaders interested in farming. He is going to donate a large majority of the crop to the ministry for the purpose of constructing buildings for housing on the farm. In addition to the acres he owns, he is renting and farming 200 acres. These acres need to be purchased at approximately $5000 per acre. This would be purposed by the ministry and the crop from this property would be used for providing additional construction and housing for the program.

The Total cost of this project is $1,000,000

VISION OF LA MAISON DE L’ÉVÊQUE ET LES ENFANTS

I

n all the countries we serve there are so many children who are suffering through no fault of their own. In Africa many children are left with no parents because of the AIDS virus, or Ebola. There are areas of tribal conflict and even efforts at mass genocide leaving children fleeing for their lives. In India there are so many children who are cast aside like rubbish. Not to mention the children of Costa Rica who are a tourist attraction for the sex industry. It has always been my desire to bring some of these children home with me. My own personal experiences of being a child with adult responsibilities causes my heart to be open and full of love and compassion for these children who suffer daily. I want to do more than send a check and get a picture once a month. I want to be a part of their lives. What if, we could raise young missionaries who come out of these circumstances, given a home, family and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What if, they were with an intentional life mission to serve the suffering children of the world. I have sponsored, worked with children who have grown up and done amazing things in their local communities. How much more could be done when they are equipped with a loving family, a supportive environment, given a world class education, access to technology and the leadership model of Jesus Christ. Other groups and religions are taking these children and strapping bombs to their bodies, armies are taking young

girls and boys and making them sex slaves. In Asia, children are a cheap labor engine driving an economy that only supports the tyrants who exploit them. I want to be a part of a Christian response that will reverberate across the nations for generations. Let us be the first to recognize the call of Jesus in our relationship to young children. Suffer the children, let them come unto us. Let the love of Christ that’s planted in them change a generation. Let us buy a house and make it a home and a school for refugee children as professor Xavier did for mutants in the X men. Let us teach the Word of God through the text and our life example. Let us be the truth, the answer to the question everyone is afraid to ask. Let us arrange for 10 -15 children to leave the pits of hell. Let us bring the children home. Let us buy a mansion with 20 bedrooms and ample space for homeschooling. Let’s give two retired couples an opportunity to live the rest of their lives sharing the love of Christ with these children and world. Let’s open the door to some amazing Christian young people who want to give a year or two of their lives teaching and mentoring these world leaders. Let us decide this day to commit to raising the Christian Catalysts of tomorrow. La maison de l’évêque et les enfants is french for “the home of the Bishop and the Children. On every Ecumenical Church and University Campus that we build there will be La maison de l’évêque et les enfants.
