MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDING BISHOP

Greetings and best wishes in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ

Welcome to the 26th Annual Holy Convocation of the Ecumenical Church and University. We are excited to join you as we take that great leap forward into the next twenty-five years. It has been a glorious time in worship, service and mission. We have built more churches and university campuses than any of us could have imagined. We have joined hands with hundreds of men and women in licensure and ordination.

In this Convocation, we are joined in person and online with our brothers and sisters in East Africa, Central Africa, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South America, Central America and the Caribbean. It has been the Lord’s mighty and gracious hand at work in our lives. We have set ourselves to be a container of the Cross Style Message.

Dr. Stephen Manley’s vision of a message driven ministry has changed our perspective. Bishop Charles Mpagi, Asiimwe Evans, David Eyoma and the whole East African crew have made online learning a reality. Bishop Andrew Dev is building a 15,000 square foot building on the Prayer Mountain we purchased over 10 years ago. Our daughter, Jasmine continues on her quest to build 100 primary school in East Africa,

CityLight Men on the Wall chapters and Esther Women of Influence chapters have engaged their communities in entrepreneurial projects that are paying big dividends all over the world.

This year we install a new president of Ecumenical University. God is up to something BIG. Let’s join Him in winning the world to Christ.

May God’s blessings abound,

3

Joe and Gladys Grimaud

Joe and Gladys were married for 63 years with three sons. Joe was a fighter pilot during the Vietnam war and Gladys the faithful mother and housewife. Joe retired from the service, took his savings and opened a Midas Muffler shop in Alexander, La.

The Grimaud family set their life priorities: God, Family, Country, and Career. Working as a team the Grimauds applied what Joe would later call the “Grimaud’s Law of Certainty”...” Diligent effort consistently applied in a specified direction over a long period of time will bring results certain.” Gladys served as the CEO of the home and Joe grew business partnerships.

The Grimaud family believed in being fully involved in church and Community. Joe led his family in tithing 10% and saving 10% to build a solid financial foundation. The Grimaud family business grew from a Midas Muffler shop to a national network of Precision Tune franchises

In 1991 Joe was elected President of Precision Tune Inc. to save the international mother company from total bankruptcy. He turned the company around in one year and in addition adopted Frederick Douglass Jr. High Alternative School in Washington DC.

In 1996, racial tensions were high in South Carolina over the Confederate Flag. Joe and Gladys contacted Dr. Tony Evans to bring a Unity Crusade to Columbia, SC. With God’s help and direction, City Light Columbia was established to address the racial problem with all Christian churches coming together to repent and heal the community. On May 18 – 20, 1997, Christian churches responded with over 80,000 attendees (60% white 40% black).

Both Joe and Gladys were licensed and ordained as ministers in Ecumenical Church. As Joe establishing Chapin Furniture, more Precision Tunes and other businesses Gladys established CityLight as a worldwide change agent. Through her philanthropy, Christ Central, Cross Style, Windows to the World and many other organizations were greatly enhanced. She is one of the founders of Ecumenical University and has fostered Campus development on three continents, She has used the Esther Women of Influence and her wealth to empower women in Africa and Asia.

Joe died in 2020 and his three sons, David, Greg and Keith have continued his business legacy. Gladys continues the Grimaud family legacy in philanthropy.

JEAN SANDERS HOPKINS

Nurses often touch the lives of their patients with their expert knowledge, kind words, and empathetic gestures. Jean Sanders Hopkins is an example of such a nurse. She was born in Lykesland, S.C. on April 19, 1931, and grew up in the Waverly and Saxon Homes communities of Columbia.

From her youth to her devoted career in nursing, she has always been a high achiever and a firm believer in excellence and accomplishment. Hopkins has more than 30 years of professional nursing experience. She retired from her position as Assistant Chief of Nursing at Columbia’s Dorn Veterans Administration Hospital in 1993, after working at several other hospitals and healthcare facilities in South Carolina and Georgia.

Not content to rest after her retirement, she continues to share her nursing skills. Hopkins is a board member of the Palmetto Health Alliance, an at-large member of the Board of Trustees of Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, and Director of Health Services at Allen University. In addition, she serves as a substitute nurse in Richland County School District One. Her background also includes past employment as a senior public health nurse with the S. C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, and a nursing instructor at South Carolina State University. Hopkins received her registered nursing (R.N.) diploma in 1953, from the then-segregated Columbia Hospital School of Nursing, and her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of South Carolina (USC) in 1976. She also is a participant in numerous health awareness seminars, blood pressure appraisals, and Sickle Cell Anemia screenings throughout the community. Complementing her role as a nurse, Hopkins has authored and co-authored several publications on healthcare and nursing practice. These include the highly acclaimed article, “Cultural Diversity in Nursing Practice,” and “Teenage Sexuality— Risky,” co-authored with Delores Roberts. She also initiated the format for The Memoirs of Sadie F. Nickpeay, which chronicles the life of an African American nurse midwife in South Carolina of South Carolina (USC).

BISHOP STEPHEN MANLEY

After 50 years in itinerant evangelism, the Manleys felt a clear call from God to come off the road for the purpose of starting the Cross Style School of Practical Ministry. The basis for this school required a church body to partner in the lives of the students and in the ministry training. In September 2009, twenty-two years after the dream began, Cross Style Church of the Nazarene was established in Lebanon, Tennessee with Stephen as the lead pastor.

Over the last several years, Cross Style Church has aggressively ministered within the community. Whereas some churches are inward focused, Stephen has wanted from the beginning for the pastoral staff, the congregation, and ministry students to be outward focused. The church now runs an emergencyhousing program for the homeless and needy, provides food boxes and serves a daily free hot buffet dinner to the community. Cross Style is invested in nursing homes, the community little league, the local Kiwanis Club, and has recently started a transformation program for those with addictions and people coming out of prison or jail. The ministry opportunities have been expanding and opening up in ways that can only be ascribed to Jesus.

Now that a ministry foundation has been laid in the community, Stephen and the Cross Style team officially launched the Cross Style School of Practical Ministry in 2013. The outflow and ministry potential as well as the practical investment in the lives of these students cannot be overstated. Students spend between a semester to two years at the school and are grounded in the Word of God and learn how to practically live the Truth of Scripture out in practical ministry. It is the passion of everyone in Cross Style, especially Stephen, to have the opportunity to invest in and train up the next generation of leaders, pastors, evangelists, missionaries, and ministers.

“Jesus is present in every situation of my life. There is no conversation in which I do not feel His presence. He participates in all my recreation. He is everywhere I go. Who would want to be without Him? He is the protection for my life. He is the fragrance I constantly smell. He is the flow of my spiritual blood giving me life. He is my constant nutrition making me healthy. I cannot survive without Him. I am a Jesus pusher!!!!

I want to push Him on you. I want you to join me in this obsession. You do not have to work at it; it is not a discipline. It is as natural as breathing. Please let Him pull you to His heart.” I am a Jesus pusher!!!!
