Redeye Label of the Month Q&A

Learn more about our partners in our Monthly Label Spotlight!

This Issue: Responses from the whole label team, and Denny Stilwell, Head of Mack Avenue Music Group

When and where did the label begin?

Mack Avenue was founded in 1999 by business woman and philanthropist Gretchen Valade from the Detroit area and very much has historical roots there. While we had a very early office in Seattle, Washington which closed around 2005 (and where our head of A&R, Will Wakefield, is still located), we opened an office in Los Angeles in 2006 along with an admin and warehouse facility in the suburbs of Detroit.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

Certainly jazz! Although it really is a mix of genres that we consider jazz-adjacent. That said, recent ambitions and operational changes have energized our A&R outlook and we are open to a variety of artists and genres. You probably will not see any rap, traditional country or metal releases on our near future release schedule but we don’t rule out most genres.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

We wish there was a sexier answer to this question! The first office was on Mack Avenue in the Detroit area, hence the name. Pretty simple!

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

Passionate. Knowledgeable. We seem to have a lot of committed fans and repeat customers who love what we do. And as we’ve rolled out some classic jazz reissues from the Strata East label, Oscar Peterson and Erroll Garner, more collectors have become fans of the label.

Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?

That’s easy. Check these out: Zohar and Adam, and Ekep Nkwelle. Both have fantastic debut albums coming from us this year.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

Denny Stilwell: You are right, we can’t choose! That is such a hard question. Recently we’ve been honored to be the caretaker for the Strata East imprint from the ‘70’s and that series of high quality reissues has been a joy to release. So much terrific music and there are more reissues coming this year. Our ongoing relationship with the Oscar Peterson Estate is also a bright spot for the label. We have a gorgeous 6-LP / 4 CD box set coming in a few months called ‘World Tour’ to celebrate his centennial.

Adam Zelinka, General Manager: This is a really hard question… I have favorites for different reasons… so I’m going to give you three.. and these are by no means in order or definitive.. this is what comes to mind at this particular moment… I’m not even numbering this group: Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble, Jackets XL by Yellowjackets, and Be Water by Christian Sands.

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? We have several colored vinyl in the Mack Avenue catalog. When it works with the artist and the release, we partake. There are certain releases that aren’t suited for color vinyl (ie, the previously mentioned Strata East line) so we look for other unique elements to highlight those releases. Color is always an option in our back pocket, though.

The most unique package that we released was the Erroll Garner “Liberation In Swing: Centennial Collection” in 2021. Four 180 gram LP’s, twelve CD’s, five 45’s, 60-page hard bound book, a cassette…it was a fully custom package. It’s sold out (there are probably a few on Ebay) but we still have a few of the companion piece, “The Complete Symphony Hall Concert” which is contained within the 60 page hardbound book. It’s also a spectacular piece.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format? No one likes rising costs. We do what we can to keep reasonable margins so that fans find our vinyl affordable. We put a lot of love and energy into every piece of vinyl and we want them in homes not in a warehouse somewhere.

The CD market is still there! At least for our adult fans/buyers. From an audio standpoint, it’s a great format. Hi quality sound in a fairly portable format. We are continuing to make CD’s (the Oscar Peterson box that was mentioned earlier will be available in a 4-CD package with a 20 page booklet) and we will until the market tells us there is no longer demand.

How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?

It’s critical to reduce plastic from our products, for sure. That is, and has been, a challenge. Mack Avenue stopped using CD jewel cases about 12 years ago in favor of digipaks. We removed plastic from our digipaks around 2016 or ‘17 and got pushback from fans about it because the digipaks were so thin. So, we modified our digipaks to contain less plastic but haven’t yet eliminated it altogether.

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

Our policies and health plans have always contained resources for employees that have been impacted by mental health while our values statements support DEI initiatives. I think all of us at Mack Avenue have been touched personally by both of these issues. Supporting them is an important part of the employee experience here.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:

Denny: It’s no longer there but when I was in middle school there was a store called The Underground in my hometown. It was where I bought my first vinyl album which I played on a hand me down vinyl/cassette/8-track player. When I moved to LA, The Record Surplus in West LA was my go-to spot near my house. I am glad it’s still there and when I am in that neighborhood I stop in.

Will Wakefield: Daybreak Records & Jive Time Records in Seattle.

ROBYN

STREET DATE: March 27th, 2026

Sexistential is the most ecstatic record that Robyn has ever made, the sound of one of contemporary music’s most influential artists coming home. After the club music meditations of 2018’s Honey, the album features nine playful pop songs that tie back to her era-defining Body Talk trilogy, designed to feel “like a spaceship coming through the atmosphere at a really high speed and crash landing”, she says. “That’s how I felt, like I’d had all these experiences searching too far out into space, and now I’m crashing back into myself.”

Co-produced with longtime collaborator Klas Åhlund, and featuring Max Martin among the writing credits, Sexistential heralds one of the decade’s most celebrated comebacks. Featuring singles “Dopamine”, “Talk To Me” and “Sexistential”, it’s emphatic and punchy, defiant about emotional and biological pleasure, need and softness. The album’s title started as an in-joke before she realised it said everything she wanted to say. “Exploring my sensual life is the same feeling as when I make a good song,” she explains. “It’s such a beautiful kind of sensitive vibration that takes so much work to keep afloat. I feel like the purpose of my life is to stay horny - it doesn’t even have to be about sex, but it’s feeling sensual and attracted to things that I enjoy, and not letting anything take over that.”

The album news follows a run of public appearances - including performing on CNN’s NYE Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen and two sold-out Brooklyn Paramount showsthat have created huge anticipation for new music. Whether performing with David Byrne to celebrate SNL’s fiftieth, making show-stopping live appearances with Charli xcx and Gracie Abrams, collaborating with Yung Lean and Charli or soundtracking Acne Studio’s 2025 Paris show, Robyn continues her immeasurable impact on popular culture.

In the hands of Courtney Barnett, fragments of everyday life become rich and riveting A deft lyricist and virtuosic guitarist with inimitable musicianship, Barnett first found critical acclaim with 2013’s The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas and broke into the mainstream in 2015 with her debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit Garnering a coveted Best New Artist Grammy nomination and numerous other accolades, the album stands as a generational classic Barnett followed her debut with 2017’s Lotta Sea Lice, an acclaimed collaborative record with Kurt Vile, and eschewed the vignettes of her early records on 2018’s Tell Me How You Really Feel, her humid, political sophomore record In 2021, she released Things Take Time, Take Time, a remarkable artistic step forward On March 27th, 2026 Courtney will release her 4th studio album, Creature of Habit ARTIST TITLE LABEL

SNAIL MAIL

On Ricochet, the third album from Snail Mail coming March 27th 2026, Lindsey Jordan returns to assert herself as a generational songwriter, cleareyed and honest as ever. Time has passed, but she remains a sensitive soul, and here her incisive introspection is tethered to newly expansive and hypnotic melodies and ornate string arrangements. While writing Ricochet, Jordan found herself fixating on concerns she’d previously pushed out of her mind, namely death and what happens after.

Jordan’s early music largely dealt with matters of the heart, a territory that she tried to step beyond on Ricochet. “Misery feels safe to write about because I am good at it,” she says, “but I’m not bathing in my own agony anymore.” To feel the pain of everything and then nothing is a lonesome contradiction. Ricochet is a record about being caught in this whirlpool, but Jordan’s music has never been so transcendent. The luminous opener, “Tractor Beam,” is driven by jangly guitars, but is ultimately about dissociation and “feeling othered while acknowledging that you’re spending a lot of your time and energy figuring out how to float away.”

These 11 songs are colored by the anxiety of watching life slip through your fingers, as well as the vulnerability of loving deeply rather than frenetically. Ultimately, Ricochet is an album about realizing—and accepting—that the world still turns no matter what is going on in your tiny life.

NAPOLEON DEMPS

The big voice from Flint Michigan, that brought us the smash hit “Norma Jean” is back with "It's so Hard". A deeply soulful beat-ballad with a message, "It's so Hard" tells a tale that we unfortunately know too well–a couple promising kids whose lives get cut short when they inadvertently get caught up in the hustling, drugs, and guns that surround them. Fortified with a toughness that's unmistakably Detroit, the track takes you on a cross-country journey, marrying the cool, east coast swagger of T-Neck era Isleys with the laid back groove coveted by the WC lowrider soul scene. A raw expression of the violence far too many young folks have to bear.

Soft Machine

Thirteen

03/27/2026

'Thirteen' is the thirteenth studio album by classic British prog band Soft Machine. The album of superlative new material marks a fresh chapter in the group's 60-year history. Whilst the line-up of Soft Machine may have changed many times since the heady days of the late 1960s, the band's spirit of musical adventure, and the ease with which it freely avoids being pigeonholed has stayed a constant - as it moves from powerful progressive jazz rock to atmospheric psychedelia to free improvised jazz to ambient loop music.

'Thirteen' features legendary guitarist John Etheridge, who has been with the band over 50 years and is once again in superb form. Whilst all four members of the band contribute compositions, the album's main composer is saxophonist, flautist and keyboard player Theo Travis, who wrote six of the album's thirteen tracks. The newest member of the group is drummer and composer Asaf Sirkis

The album is incredibly broad in its breadth and scope. Tracks include "Open Road" a rocky track which sees the band soaring on all burners with fiery solos by both Etheridge and Travis; the ballad "Disappear", which starts with ethereal looped flutes and develops into a beautiful piano led and drum less miniature. "Turmoil", penned by bassist Fred Thelonious Baker, brims with deranged fuzz bass, manic solos and an almost unhinged clamour. "Daevid's Special Cuppa" sees a cameo by founder member Daevid Allen (his guitar part being recorded years earlier, and the track built around it).

On 'Thirteen' Soft Machine has never sounded more adventurous.

One of the best-loved UK bands of the last four decades, The Charlatans’ career spans 14 albums, three Number One UK albums and era-defining anthems like “The Only One I Know”, “North Country Boy” and “One to Another”.

Out on March 27th, this 2XLP/2XCD expanded edition of Some Friendly celebrates their landmark 1990 debut album. The 20 songs on this release include the original album plus a selection of bonus tracks curated especially for this release by Tim Burgess. The album has been newly remastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road and will be pressed on double white vinyl with a printed inner gatefold sleeve. It is also available on 2XCD.

The Charlatans formed in 1988 and released their debut single “Indian Rope” in early 1990. They began recording Some Friendly shortly after with producer Chris Nagle. The blistering lead single, “The Only One I Know” was their first top-10 hit, and is still their most popular song. The song has recently been getting even more attention for it’s use in the popular Netflix series Run Away. Two additional singles followed with “Then” and “Sproston Green”.

The band’s success comes not just from their ability to be able to ride the groove but also from their talent for writing standout songs. These were the gifts that made them among the greatest British survivors of our time, rolling through tragedy and stylistic changes to amass a terrific body of work - one that was modern enough to play in clubs but classicist enough to stand the test of time, and one that continues to grow to this day. They just released their 14th studio album We Are Love.

From Detroit’s techno resistance to Berlin’s elastic minimalism, Lusaka’s ancestral futurism to Chicago’s house communion, When There Is No Sun is a recording project curated by Ricardo Villalobos, uniting visionary electronic music producers to reimagine the universe of Sun Ra. Drawing from Omni Sound’s recordings of Living Sky by the Sun Ra Arkestra and My Words Are Music of Sun Ra’s poetry, the producers pull fragments of sound and text into their own creative orbits, passing through the portal that Sun Ra opened into a realm where the impossible is possible.

One of the most radical musical pioneers of the 20th century, Sun Ra used jazz, electronics, poetry, and performance to expand the possibilities of sound, identity, and imagination. Rooted in deep reverence for Sun Ra’s legacy, yet reaching forward as a living, generative force, When There Is No Sun is not a tribute but a continuum, balancing the pulse of electronic music with the spirit of experimentation, embodying Sun Ra’s promise that ‘there are other worlds’ if you are willing to see them.

“Big Harp has always been one of the best and most unsung bands of all of my many saddle creek-adjacent talented friends. Their music fuses true Americana with the outsider punk ethos we all grew up on. Chris and Stef are heroes in my book. Gallantly tending to those lonely little fires we all need to survive in this cold world. Even when no one is watching they never let the flame die out. They give me hope and they might for you too. I absolutely love this record. Highly recommended. It makes me feel less alone.”

“Big Harp makes it look easy on this complex album of beauty, longing and loss that has le me humbled and inspired.”

TIM KASHER (CURSIVE, THE GOOD LIFE)

“I’m so happy to have been able to make this record. There was no plan, there was no schedule, there was not even, as far as I know, a real intention to make it. I had just said something to the e ect of “why not come in sometime and we’ll lay a few of your new songs down on tape”. And so it happened. And it was great! And we did it again, and then maybe one more time, and poof! A record. I love working with Chris and Stef, just friends hanging out and making and capturing music. So easy, we do it all live, just set up and away we go. The fact that they are such incredibly talented and unique songwriters and performers doesn’t hurt.”

PIERRE DE REEDER (RILO KILEY)

BIO to California together, got married, had their first kid, and then started Big Harp. They were that couple playing hard-edged folk-rock in clubs, Senseney’s mom o en babysitting during their sets. They are lifers, and lifers make it work.

Stefanie Drootin and Chris Senseney—the married parents of two who have been the core of the band Big Harp essentially since they met two decades ago—are music lifers. At 17, Drootin sold her Volvo for a van and has spent the last quarter-century circling the world with the likes of The Good Life, Bright Eyes, Conor Oberst, Azure Ray, She & Him, and M. Ward.

Senseney’s story is one guided by sound, too. As a kid in Nebraska’s wild Sandhills, music was a centerfold of family life. When college in Omaha didn’t go as planned, he fell in with the city’s legendary scene and became an in-demand player. He met Drootin on the road in 2007. A month later, they accidentally moved

Never mind, then, the decade that has passed since the 2015 release of Waveless , Big Harp’s fourth album, Runs to Blue, does not feel overdue. With songs of wanderlust and loss, love for your children and love for your lover, accepting one’s increasing age while also lamenting that we can never be what we once were, Runs to Blue feels right on time, like visiting Drootin and Senseney at home one evening and hearing them laugh and cry their way through stories about their past and hopes for their future. Just acoustic guitar, bass, and two voices who know one another like hand

and glove, Runs to Blue is the simplest sounding Big Harp record. It is, however, the most emotionally complex, two lives long combined distilled into 10 frank and disarming songs.

Runs to Blue is a snapshot in the life of a couple whose relationship began with song and remains bound to it, no matter how long they stepped back. It sounds like folk music because it is folk music, exactly—an honest, recorded live in studio collection of experiences set to unadorned tunes you can sing and keep with you always, little reminders of the past to guide you into the unknown that’s up ahead.

Portland-based krautrock band Møtrik formed in 2013, its four members united by a pledge to modernize their beloved genre. Sharing a passion for pioneers like Can, Kraftwerk, and Träd, Gräs och Stenar, the group has demonstrated its ability to deliver over a series of EPs and albums, most recently 2020’s acclaimed Artificial Head. As they continue to experiment by incorporating additional influences—ranging from funk and jazz to psych and prog—Møtrik’s third full-length, a double LP titled MØØN: The Cosmic Electrics of MØTRIK, is a further continuation in the story of an historic genre befitting of the album’s cosmic artwork.

Møtrik boldly takes full advantage of the space that four sides of vinyl allow on this latest offering. The middle of the album features two long suites that feel typical of the group’s dynamic live performances, which frequently feature fog cannons, lasers, and other prop homages to Kraftwerk and company. The 13-minute “Stabilize” emerges from a haze of synth pulses and guitar tones, settling into a steady NEU!-like chug that swells and recedes like an ecstatic wave. On “Space Elevator”, the motorik drive from which the band take their name evolves into an insinuating and sensual disco-like throb before the perfect proggy comedown in the final minute.

MASAHIRO TAKAHASHI

IN ANOTHER RELEASE DATE: MARCH 20, 2026

On his sixth LP In Another, Toronto-based, Japaneseborn, musician and composer Masahiro Takahashi ( 髙橋 政宏 ) continues the collaborative expansion of his sonic universe that listeners witness on his 2023 release, Humid Sun.

Here he enlists a rotating ensemble of ten guest artists from Toronto’s vibrant music community, including his labelmate Joseph Shabason, who also serves as the album’s co-producer and engineer.

Spurred by his longtime admiration for chamber pop spanning the High Llamas and Free Design to the Beach Boys, Takahashi deviates from the underlying processes of his past two outings, trading Ableton sequences for lead sheets, focusing on creating robust melodic and harmonic foundations first.

This difference is audible straight away; the album opens with a dialog between upright piano and plucked double bass that’s so gentle and transparent you can hear the breath of the players.

Whole World As Vigil, the new album from Lauren Auder, opens with a proclamation. “Let greed in,” Auder declares. It’s an invitation to what can happen when you embrace life in all of its euphoria, desperation and endless possibility. While 2023 debut the infinite spine, released via True Panther, explored Auder coming to terms with her own identity, here the world is showcased by another set of fresh eyes: inspired by a romantic relationship, the songs bottle up not only the electrifying sheen of being in love, but what it then forces you to examine and consider.

London-based Lauren Auder is a British-French singer-songwriter, record producer and composer who stitches together elements of classical, experimental, emo, and rap music into her own strange and hypnotic form of orchestral pop music. With the likes of Celeste, Caroline Polachek, Mura Masa, Boris and Jeshi all on her credits list, as well as composing music for Virgil Abloh’s Louis Vuitton campaigns, and modelling for Marni, Gucci and Celine, Auder has cemented herself as an auteur across the worlds of music and fashion. For fans of: Perfume Genius, Tirzah, Vegyn, L’Rain, Geese

Tommy Peltier 's Echo Park, compiled of unheard tapes from the early/mid 1970s, brings us into contact with a long-extinct creature equal parts slinky hipster, universal soldier of the heart and snuggly loverman the light-rockin’ tinseltown troubadour, the likes of which hasn’t been served around Hollywood since 1979! Tommy ’s somewhere in the tuneful tradition of Rupert Holmes, Stephen Bishop, Andrew Gold, David Batteau and of course, Captain Fantastic and the Thin White Duke. His soulful songs and high-pitched vocals (he was once called “ Tom Rapp on helium” ) are paired with the requisite chopsy, jazz-enriched LA players, entrancing the ear with grooves and performances both tasty and sweet. Mixed and mastered with great zest by Jim O’Rourke (he brought new life to recordings of a similar vintage for Judee Sill’s posthumous Dreams Come True back in 2005), Echo Park is an encompassing trip through a whole other time and place.

A trumpet player since childhood, Tommy felt no need for pop music; he’d come of age during the west coast jazz explosion of the 1950s, hearing Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker ’s legendary performances at The Haig Club, just a mile west of MacArthur Park. Inspired by the departures of the Ornette Coleman Quartet, he founded The Jazz Corps in 1963, gigging all around around town, including a residency at Hermosa Beach’s also-legendary Lighthouse. Their sound was captured on a stellar 1967 Pacific Jazz release featuring Roland Kirk. Jazz was Tommy 's game, but when he injured his side playing lead parts in a big band, he couldn’t blow for long without aggravating it. Something had to give.

Fortunately, there was a lot of giving in those days. In ‘68, he met aspiring singer/ songwriter Judee Sill. He found her energy amazing, as she played bass in a group he was sitting in with, and it quickly became clear he and Judee were in tune! When Tommy picked up the guitar and started writing songs, she was there with help and encouragement. As the '70s dawned, Tommy was turning 35, but he was also turning the page, like so many others, to find something amazing there on the other side. Amazing music things flow freely up and down the tracklist of Echo Park. Inspired not influenced by Yes, Supertramp, ELO, Queen, Bowie, The Beatles and others, Tommy developed and honed his new music throughout the '70s. A handful of the cuts here were recorded between 1970 and ‘73, just a mile from Echo Park Lake, at an unassuming rear house set back in the hills (that Tommy ’s been a resident of since 1966!). Other tracks were recorded at sessions in Hollywood in 1975 and ‘76, at now-obscure studios like Music Grinder and Heritage. Tommy was tight with a great bunch of guys: guitarist Art Johnson, who worked with far-out jazzers like J ohn Klemmer, Paul Horn and Tim Weisburg, and was a member of the progressive jazz collective The Advancement; keyboardist Richard Thompson, whose studio rounds included The Association, John Hartford and Gábor Szabó; bassist Wolfgang Melz, who played with peaceful, easy folkies Hedge & Donna, Mark-Almond and Daniel Moore, plus Charles Lloyd, Szabó, Klemmer, and the psychedelically wigged Gravity Adjusters Expansion Band Judee Sill’s on a couple songs too, as are former Jazz Corpsmen Lynn Blessing and Bill Plummer. Tommy ’s first pop band, Jasmine, appear on “Here Today” his very first vocal composition, and the earliest recording here.

Lots of great times and great songs, but no contract.... which turns out to be our gain, as we release them today! Tommy has continued to play music, releasing new stuff with Plastic Theatre Art Band in 1996, and a number of releases under his own name, most recently in 2011. And at the ripe young age of 90 (!), he’s still playing today! Mixed and mastered by Jim O'Rourke, Echo Park is a high-flying journey through the past.

Other Drag City releases with Joshua Abrams and Lisa Alvarado:

Joshua Abrams’ Music for Pulse Meridian Foliation is the aural manifestation of an art event described as “an in-between space and access point to a pulsating experience that connects body and land.” Like the action of a slow-spiraling coil, the music information here revolves in dappling light, an evolution drawn slowly, magnetically forward, resonating there and back again. Deep-reaching in elemental movement, it leaves traces and echoes in the air and in our ears, as our own experience evolves.

Joshua originally created this music as a 4 channel installation to accompany Lisa Alvarado's Pulse Meridian Foliation exhibition at REDCAT in downtown Los Angeles. Written for two violas (both played by James Sanders), harmonium (Lisa), & electronics (Joshua), it was designed to play on a loop throughout the gallery's open hours between April 1 and August 20, 2023. And it did.

When playing with Natural Information Society, Joshua’s writing is directed toward the form of the music as uniquely occupied by the group. Here, he wrote in strict dialogue with the exhibit, responding with choices in composition, performance and production on Music for Pulse Meridian Foliation. A key interpretation of the exhibition is voiced by Josh in the hand-off of information between the two violas as they weave together from oppositional points across the sound stage.

In mixing the original surround sound down to two channels, Joshua worked toward the small details from left to right, placing former residents of triangulated speaker planes in a congenial spot on our present stereo azimuth realizing, in the careful growth of this auricular border ecosystem, an essential aspect of the Pulse Meridian Foliation exhibit.

Daniela Lieja Quintanar, REDCAT Chief Curator and Deputy Director, Programs, on Pulse Meridian Foliation:

A threshold composed of a new immersive mural, a collection of double-sided paintings, a series of photos, and a sound installation. The exhibition explores how memory can be transformed through the body’s relationship to geography and geology, as well as engaging with Chicana feminist Gloria Anzaldúa’s concept of Nepantla (in-between): "the midway point between the conscious and the unconscious, the place where transformations are enacted."

In her exhibit, Pulse Meridian Foliation, Lisa Alvarado inhabits the process of foliation, in which extreme environmental pressures upon rocks evoke a new crystallization and a changed minerality. For Alvarado personally, this is a matrix through which she can consider time and changes, specifically the politics of change, and dialogues that multiply over distinct chapters of history. A way to view her family’s intergenerational memory of “Mexican Repatriation”, a 1930s US policy that pushed millions across the border into Mexico, including many U.S. citizens.

The weight of these things shudders through the bones of the music here slowly, almost incalculably. Details come and go, light and shadow flickers as horizontal and vertical planes gently intersect… an ambient space in constant change. Constant MINIMAL change, with the recurrent events and slight returns cascading in slo-mo arcs all around.

On Music for Pulse Meridian Foliation, Lisa Alvarado asks, “How does memory transform and live within the body?” and, in collaboration with Joshua Abrams, a transformation is enacted.

The Kitchenettes are three friends from the San Francisco Bay Area's outrageously fertile indie scene who have been quietly impressing crowds for several years with their fragile homespun pop songs. Now they're following up their 2024 demos tape with the first Kitchenettes vinyl release, a delightful three song 7" that deftly updates the timeless Marine Girls/Dolly Mixture template for 2026. The three songs show an admirable range of mood, tempo and texture -- a lovely, warm vibe throughout. It’s a wonderfully cozy single destined to be filed amongst Slumberland’s other indiepop classics.

Chris Acker’s latest collection of songs, Famous Lunch, is in his words, a “growing pains album.” When writing the record, the New Orleans' based folk musician found himself hunting for a voice that wasn’t just an imitation of the one he’d been using on the last 30 songs he’d made. “At the same time, I worked hard to find a certain voice for myself over the previous 3 records and I didn’t want to abandon that.”

While the album finds him continuing to transcribe life’s fleeting and provocative banalities with refreshing grace, the songs on Famous Lunch are intentionally more absurd, stylizing his lyricism as both poetic and disarming simultaneously — commencing with “Sh*t Surprise”— an earworm with a vernacular that stays true to its title. Inspired by George Saunders and Sasha Pearl (and wanting to make a song that sounds like Eagles saying the word “sh*t” over and over), “Sh*t Surprise” is the most Chris Acker song possible, in that its earnestness arrives in spades and comes varnished with a one-of-a-kind, spectacular gnarliness. “We’d match our breath in the upstairs room and we’d hold together ‘til I smelled like you,” Acker sings, before nose-diving into that unforgettable chorus about stepping in a smelly, disgusting pile of sh*t.

More than anything else, Famous Lunch finds Chris Acker at his most sentimental and grateful, as he sings about Bunn coffee machines, gas pumps smelling like “the underside of a fingernail” in August, “10-inching” bread, stealing country club lawn-mower motors, father-son fables, impatient buffet lines, and a broom that “hasn’t been used since the last time I used it.” Acker’s eye for detail remains, and his lexicon includes phrasings that spin out like a hypnotic wash cycle. Seeing the world through his eyes, language remains something worth falling into—growing pains and all. a

“A balding, baby-faced, purveyor of nasally folk-rock, Chris Acker is one of America’s great translators of absurd mundanity.”

CLASH MAGAZINE

“Acker knows our lives are constructed of seemingly unremarkable moments. It’s why Famous Lunch makes so much sense.” NO DEPRESSION

“Caught someplace between Jerry Reed and Gram Parsons, Famous Lunch is a world ridden hard, put away wet and full of fragility, boundless, unpredictable love and one-liners that’ll make you cry, laugh and puke—in that order.”

PASTE MAGAZINE

“Acker has been touted by many critics as a ‘torch carrier for the legacy of the late John Prine’ and judging by this release that’s a pretty good assessment.”

MEMORIALS – All Clouds Bring Not Rain

MEMORIALS jump off the waterslides and head above the clouds with their stunning second album, ‘All Clouds Bring Not Rain’. The duo of Verity Susman and Matthew Simms (formerly of Electrelane and WIRE) locked themselves away in a studio in a barn secluded deep in the woods in southwestern France and re-emerged with a beautiful, unusual record that is both melodic and unconventional. For such an ambitious album it’s striking that it was written, performed, recorded and mixed solely by the two of them.

Sounding like an unearthed classic, MEMORIALS twist their influences into their own unmistakable sound. Imagine Nico singing with Can produced by David Axelrod and you’re somewhere in the right ballpark. The record draws inspiration from a wide range of music including folk, dub, post punk, experimental tape music, 60s soul, garage rock, 70s spiritual jazz and Canterbury prog.

This attention to detail in their sound meant finding several other studios to get what they needed to record with, including a harpsichord at 4AD’s studio in London and a vibraphone and vintage Leslie speaker in Stereolab drummer Andy Ramsay’s studio Press Play.

Verity’s distinctive, unadorned singing is a focal point of the record, moving from tender to wild. Her vocal melodies quickly become earworms, providing the tuneful heart around which the songs’ more unorthodox elements are arranged, which is where Matthew’s unconventional approach to recording and production comes to the fore.

With their adventurous arrangements, classic songwriting skills and innovative production techniques, MEMORIALS have created another mesmerising listen that’s accomplished and compelling in its unique approach yet remains dizzyingly immersivejust like their acclaimed live shows.

“Kaleidoscopic art-pop and adventurous psych-rock with an immersive, experimental aura.”

OVERVIEW

An inspired coming together of musical minds. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of In A Space Outta Sound, George Evelyn aka DJ E.A.S.E has handed over the tapes to dub maestro Adrian Sherwood to go on a heady version excursion with eight tracks from the original record, in the spirit of the reggae and sound system roots that informed the original album. The result is a fresh take on a much-loved classic, in the lineage of albums such as Massive Attack’s No Protection and Spoon’s Lucifer On The Moon. Features bold new re-works of iconic tracks such as “You Wish” (appearing here as “You Bliss”) and “Flip Ya Lid” (mutated into “Flippin Eck”). As well as his trademark mixing desk wizardry, Sherwood has also brought in some of the core On-U Sound players to add additional instrumentation and turn this collaboration into something which is much more than the sum of its parts.

Los Retros – Odisea

Stones Throw Records | STH2522

3 April 2026 | 2LP Vinyl | City Pop, Indie

Odisea is the highly anticipated debut album from Los Retros. Emulating the iconic City Pop sound of the 1980s, it is a more articulate musical endeavor from the singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist.

Los Retros first captured hearts with the lo-fi magic of “Someone To Spend Time With”, recorded at the age of 17 using little more than a four-track in his parents’ living room. Now 25, the Oxnard, California native has stepped into an entirely new season of life.

Through it all, he’s kept the same DIY spirit, still writing and recording every note himself, only now in a home studio of his own.

Los Retros has drawn praise from The Los Angeles Times, FADER, Dazed, and Remezcla, who described him as “one of the most exciting artists making indie today”.

His music has garnered over 450M streams across DPSs and his videos have over 100M views on YouTube.

The Devil Wears Prada’s 2013 album 8:18 once again pulled off the neat trick of topping the Pop (#6), Metal (#2), and Christian (#1) charts (the title itself is a reference to the Bible verse Romans 8:18, which says that our present-day suffering pales next to the glory that is to come). Which kinda sums up TDWP’s appeal: what other band can shift so seamlessly from moments of visceral madness to spells of spiritual grace? 8:18 marked the swan song for founding band members Chris Rubey and Daniel Williams, and they certainly went out in style; the addition of some hardcore punk (“Black & Blue,” “Number Eleven”) and straight metal (“Rumors”) ingredients to TDWP’s melodic metalcore cauldron makes for a heady brew indeed. This sea blue pressing comes inside a gatefold with beautifully austere artwork plus an insert. A real artistic statement on every level.

(REMASTERED COKE CLEAR VINYL EDITION)

STREET DATE: APRIL 3, 2026

The incandescent voice of Tim Buckley took him on a journey from fragile folk rocker to boldly experimental avant-garde icon in nine short years of recordings. Here we capture him at the beginning of his career with his sparkling 1966 debut album, which featured the Elektra label’s “A-Team” that produced the Doors: label owner and producer Jac Holzman, producer Paul Rothchild, and engineer Bruce Botnick. Not to mention such West Coast legends like arranger Jack Nitzsche, keyboardist Van Dyke Parks, and drummer Billy Mundi accompanying Buckley’s long-time collaborators Lee Underwood on guitar and Jim Fielder on bass. To label Tim Buckley a promising first effort is to give it short shrift; the only aspect arguably holding this record back from being an utter masterpiece is the tentative timbre of Buckley’s voice, but that’s only in comparison to his late career vocal acrobatics. And, in some ways, his “shyness” just lends an evanescent, vulnerable quality to the astonishingly sophisticated lyrical and melodic flights of this 19-year-old artist. Writted and recorded by OliverAckermann over a 10 year period

Rare and Deadly cracks open a decade-long vault of raw nerve and sonic chaos from A Place To Bury Strangers. Spanning 2015–2025, it gathers demos, B-sides, abandoned experiments, and forgotten fragments pulled from Oliver Ackermann’s personal archive of late-night recordings and blown-out tapes. What makes it truly unprecedented is its fractured design: every format—CD, cassette, vinyl, and digital—features a different tracklist, with no single “complete” version. Each edition reveals alternate paths and missing links, mirroring the volatility of its creation. More documentary than compilation, Rare and Deadly captures sound before it hardens, where accidents, feedback, and electricity are left dangerously alive.

“Who is the loudest and most intense live band in the world? … Depending on who you ask, that title belongs to A Place To Bury Strangers. Their shows are exhilarating and wild, bound to raise the roof.”Post-Trash

“Brooklyn’s A Place To Bury Strangers doesn’t just turn up the volume. They obliterate the decibel scale … this isn’t music designed to politely slip past you. It’s engineered to confront, to overwhelm, to challenge.” - Toni Truale

“If you’re holding a guitar, that’s a dangerous weapon.” - Oliver Ackermann

“They build up a worthy band dynamic … blowing out the speakers … shifting momentum across instruments.” - Paste Magazine

“Their self-titled debut … combines deafening distortion, industrial textures and moody post-punk … pulling beauty out of eardrum-puncturing bleakness.” - Pitchfork

“When a song comes, I make sure I don’t let it go by,” says Joe Pernice. Sunny, I Was Wrong, his first studio album of new material under his own name, was born during a period of concentrated inspiration and productivity. Songs were coming almost more quickly than he could get them down on tape, as though they’d been waiting to pounce at just the right time. With a li le help from his friends, Pernice fashioned a handful of them into a beautiful refinement of all the qualities that have distinguished him as a songwriter over the years: his facility for aching melodies, his penchant for arrangements that nod to pop’s past without ge ing mired in nostalgia, and a deep empathy for the characters who inhabit his verses.

Pernice has been catching songs for thirty years now, first with the alt-country legends Scud Mountain Boys and then with the indie-pop mainstays Pernice Brothers. In both of those groups he etched bi ersweet stories out of songs that echo Jimmy Webb, Burt Bacharach, and Paul Williams. He’s the rare artist who can record a Barry Manilow covers album that doesn’t drip with condescension or irony. With Sunny, the album gradually came into focus—or at least an idea of an album. “I knew I wanted to make a studio record, and I knew I wanted to make a record. I didn’t want just a hodgepodge of tunes. I didn’t want to make a concept record, but I wanted something that needs to be heard from start to finish. I wanted it to be a destination. An event.” Sunny, I Was Wrong tallies up all of those things that do get away from us: friends and lovers we haven’t seen in decades, old promises broken, cherished dreams forgo en, best-laid plans unrealized.

THE GERALDINE FIBBERS

Lost Somewhere Between The Earth And My Home

The Geraldine Fibbers’ Lost Somewhere Between The Earth And My Home was recorded by Steve Fisk (Nirvana, Unwound, Beat Happening) and released in 1995. It is, in turns, tempestuous and tender. Classic country warped with noise, a crack-band and Carla’s singular voice mix the music into stories and tunnels for emotions to travel and escape. The band for Lost Somewhere… was Bill Tutton (Contra-bass) Kevin Fitzgerald (drums), Daniel Keenan (Guitar), Jesse Greene (violin) and Carla Bozulich (vox, guitar). Aside from the original album this new double LP features 4 bonus tracks which include contributions from Nels Cline (participating in an alt-cover of Can’s You Doo Right) and both he and Jessica Moss (Silver Mount Zion) playing on the BRAND NEW FIBBER TRACK: Thank You For Giving Me Life. The lyrics for this track will ring bells if you are a Minutemen or Pettibon fan!!

, just about everything else), who joined the Fibbers before they recorded 1997’s Butch, recalls discovering Lost Somewhere Between the Earth and My Home through his then-bandmate Mike Watt. “In a way, all I needed to hear was ‘Lilybelle,’” he says.

“This song is one of the best songs ever — definitive Fibbers, definitive Carla, yes, but I also hear it in a universal way as one of the most personal, poetic, moving, articulate, stately, and devastating tracks I have ever heard.” Of Cline, Carla says “Imagine playing with the best guitarist in the world and being HIS favorite band. He lifted our morale beyond description.”

The tenth anniversary edition of Venetian Snares' Traditional Synthesizer Music adds ten bonus tracks and alternative versions originally available only on limited edition compact disc from the artist's Bandcamp.

Traditional Synthesizer Music is a collection of songs created and performed live exclusively on the modular synthesizer by Aaron Funk. Each sound contained within was created purely with the modular synthesizer. No overdubbing or editing techniques were utilized in the recordings on Traditional Synthesizer Music. Each song was approached from the ground up and dismantled upon the completion of its recording. The goal was to develop songs with interchangeable structures and sub structures, yet musically pleasing motifs. Many techniques were incorporated to "humanize" or vary the rhythmic results within these sub structures. An exercise in constructing surprises, patches interrupting each other to create unforeseen progressions. Multiple takes were recorded for each song resulting in vastly different versions of each piece.

Em Spel - Bird or Snake (Birdwatcher Records)

Street Date: 3/27/2026

CAT#: LP-BW-031

Format: Digital, Vinyl

UPC 781661739248

Em Spel's intricate, flute-driven alt-folk sounds like nothing else in Chicago Led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Emma Hospelhorn, Em Spel's debut album, The Carillon Towers, was hailed by the Chicago Reader as "Scintillating" and by Dusted Magazine as "a folktale turned oddly, surreally modern, a magical realist scenario set in the right now " Hospelhorn is a flutist in avant-classical group Ensemble Dal Niente, and her discography includes work on flutes, bass guitar, and keyboards for V V Lightbody, Mute Duo, and others working in a diverse array of genres including folk, drone, garage rock, post-punk, and classical In this solo endeavor, she fuses all of these influences with story-driven lyrics to create invitingly strange folk vignettes

Em Spel’s second full-length album, Bird or Snake, teeters joyfully between art-folk and intimate indie rock Recorded in Chicago by veteran Califone and Iron & Wine producer Brian Deck, Bird or Snake is an exuberant leap forward for Em Spel Hospelhorn is at her arranging best, folding dizzying vocal harmonies, elegant instrumental writing, and deftly deployed electronics into a musical tapestry that evokes the warmth and wildness of an industrial Midwestern landscape.

The album pulses with life, from the driving drums and propulsively patterned guitars of “Poet” (featuring guest Sam Wagster on soaring pedal steel) through the organ and vocal-driven road trip love song of “Fruiting Body,” which features bird songs Hospelhorn recorded on a handheld microphone at an artist residency in Maine The album is anchored by two thematically linked song pairs In "Sea Wall," a retaining wall sings its love to the ocean, punctuated by serenely fluttering, froglike flutes; in "The Tide," the ocean sings back as the harbinger of climate apocalypse, inverting Sea Wall's gently undulating guitar line into something vaster and more ominous, and twisting the instrumental lines from “Sea Wall” flutes, saxophone, synths, guitars to evoke a howling storm. “If you say that you love me,” sings Em Spel in a dangerously shifting vocal, “come and drown ”

Meanwhile, in "Bird or Snake," syncopated percussion, found sounds, and steam-whistle flutes twine around lyrics about an uncertain relationship, while in "Geographic," the same syncopated rhythm turns on its head under joyful, Vermont Counterpoint-like flutes as Em Spel sings, “I’ll run so far away from you that all your friends will say my God, that kid’s a track star ” “I started writing many of these songs in 2022, during a residency with the Eastern Frontier Foundation on Norton Island,” says Hospelhorn. “After recovering from a serious illness in 2024, I came back to these songs, and I found that their meanings had changed for me; they became more about life cycles, large and small, and maybe more about life as something strange and glorious, that exists in counterpoint to death I also decided to take a more relaxed approach to recording, bringing simple guitar-and-drum skeletons into Narwhal to work with Brian (Deck) and then feeling out what the songs needed in the studio ” All songs were written and produced by Hospelhorn, with engineering and additional production by Brian Deck (Iron & Wine, Modest Mouse, Counting Crows) and featuring Hospelhorn on flutes, guitars, electronics, keyboards, and vocals, as well as guests Mabel Kwan (synths), Eric Ridder (drums and percussion), Katie Ernst (bass), Dustin Laurenzi (saxophone), Sam Wagster (pedal steel) and Brian Deck (drums and electronics)

Jack Studer is your neighbor. He’s your buddy sitting on the porch picking tunes with a smile on his face, flipping over an old bucket for you to pull up a seat. Jack’s music is as welcoming as the man himself, but don’t let its easy-going nature fool you. Originally from Philadelphia and currently based on the outskirts of Nashville, he's been honing his singular voice and guitar playing prowess for over a decade, touring with his long time friends the West King String Band and, more recently, performing with Nick Shoulders. Yet after traveling endless miles and countless stages, he still makes time to sing a song all his own. What lies beneath the warm melodies and placid surface is the true heart of Jack Studer, a well of mischievous wit and fearless introspection. His songs stem from a place of seeking solitude in a reality of humming highways and whining airports & barrooms.

Falling Forward, Jack's second album, is 13 tracks of alt-country that binds traditional Nashville roots with contemporary indie rock sensibilities. Recorded live at his house and co-produced by Grant D’Aubin (Nick Shoulders, Willi Carlisle), the album blends folk-rock, classic country, and confessional americana with the craft of a genuine drifter and veteran sideman falling forward into his own.

The Bevis Frond – Horrorful Heights

Horrorful Heights marks a formidable new chapter in The Bevis Frond’s deep and storied catalogue, showcasing the enduring creativity of songwriter, guitarist and frontman Nick Saloman as he moves into yet another decade of recording. Long established as one of the most distinctive voices in British underground rock, Saloman continues to refine the band’s signature blend of melodic psychedelia, wiry guitar epics and sharp, emotionally attuned songwriting. Horrorful Heights offers one of the most approachable entry points to the band’s world in years: a record that gathers their core strengths into a cohesive, vivid set.

Recorded with long-time drummer Dave Pearce and guitarist Paul Simmons, alongside new bassist Louis Wiggett, the album moves fluidly between jangling psych-pop, heavylit guitar workouts and pastoral comedown reveries. Wiggett also brings a surprising new colour to the Frond palette, contributing pedal steel to “Best Laid Plans” and “Momma Bear,” recalling early-70s country-tinged British rock from Bronco or Cochise.

The album’s range is wide but sharply defined. “Draining The Bad Blood” channels the classic Bevis Frond mode of melodic guitar pop cut from the same cloth as longtime fan favourites later covered by Teenage Fanclub and The Lemonheads. “Space Age Eyes,” a concise nine-minute odyssey, nods toward the transcendental explorations of ’70s electric Miles Davis, complete with a blistering solo from Simmons and rhythmic elasticity from Pearce.

The sitar-laden title track, written off-the-cuff while Saloman half-watched a football match, drifts through incense-hazed psychedelia with layered vocals and tumbling tablas an affectionate echo of the head-shop mysticism he has toyed with throughout the band’s history. Elsewhere, “Mossback’s Dream” splices lysergic leads with the propulsive energy of ’80s American hardcore, forging a hybrid that feels both timeless and entirely its own.

Additional highlights include the Byrds-tinged “Buffaloed,” the swirling narrative freezeframe of “Silver Insects,” and “That’s Your Lot,” a rapid-moving burst of melancholic euphoria and one of the record’s most immediate songs.

Though unmistakably eclectic, Horrorful Heights presents a focused portrait of The Bevis Frond in 2025 - vital, tuneful and unburdened by nostalgia. Saloman describes the collection simply: the best songs he’d written in recent years, arriving unforced and instinctive. The result is a late-period peak from one of Britain’s most quietly influential underground bands.

MEMORIALS – Memorial Waterslides

(BLUE VINYL)

“Exciting and unpredictable” The Guardian

**RE-PRESS OF THE ACCLAIMED 2024 ALBUM**

‘Memorial Waterslides’ is the debut album from MEMORIALS, the duo consisting of Verity Susman and Matthew Simms (previously of Electrelane and Wire). This is an otherworldly, surrealist pop record that is both timeless and timely, displaying a rare mix of classic songwriting and avant-garde attitudes.

MEMORIALS create panoramic pop that draws on both the familiar and the strange, while also treading new ground. With their playful and experimental style, combined with a love of good tunes, they sit comfortably alongside Broadcast, Portishead, Arthur Russell, The Velvet Underground, Yo La Tengo and Tortoise.

The album is awash with imagery evoking a lost future, a veiled present and a daydreamed past, each song playing a role in creating a swirling, widescreen atmosphere, the listener taken along for the ride. Produced entirely by the two of them, the sound of the record was inspired by the reel-to-reel tape experiments they first played around with onstage as they began to develop their multi-layered recordings for live performances as a duo.

Following their acclaimed 2023 soundtracks ‘Women Against The Bomb’ and ‘Tramps!’, a European tour with Stereolab (they’ve been called “Stereolab’s evil twin”) and a new music commission from the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Verity and Matthew arrived at MEMORIALS in reverse, escaping their soundtracking day jobs to create cosmic journeys through the garden shed into psychedelic rock, far-out folk and wild analogue electronics.

“Everything you’d expect from a duo adept in the strange and esoteric, while also in thrall to pop music’s melodic bent.” The Quietus

Goat –

World Music Rocket Recordings

**BLACK VINYL RE-PRESS OF THE ABBEY ROAD RE-MASTER**

When the mysterious masked collective calling themselves Goat first emerged in 2012, armed with an incendiary debut album ‘World Music’ – there was, and there still isn’t, anyone else on earth quite like them. With their enticing mythology, music full of sinuous grooves and manic explosions of fuzz, Goat were outliers from the very beginning. ‘World Music’, received an avalanche of acclaim with critics, psych heads, outernational crate diggers etc, all left enraptured by its thunderous intensity, conjured from a singular mix of sounds from across the globe. ‘World Music’ is brimming with tracks now seen as ‘classic’ Goat live favourites. Tracks that have been wowing audiences all over the world; the afrobeat stomp of ‘Disco Fever’, the fuzz abuse of ‘Goathead’, the post-punk groove of ‘Let it Bleed’, the sing-along repetitive pop of ‘Run to your Mama’... From the first note to the last, ‘World Music’ oozes with a sonic confidence rarely seen on a debut album. What Goat have is unique – they’ve managed to create a sound unrestrained by genre or any other boundaries. So, if you haven’t done so already, then it is now time you joined the Goat commune.

Sky Valley Mistress–Luna Mausoleum

New Heavy Sounds

Limited Vinyl pressing, 500 copies in a silver foil laminated gatefold sleeve housing a moon dust frosted transparent white vinyl record. Full download included as well. Also available on a very limited edition CD. Along with bonus tracks and hidden features on the record itself that are not available online, every record sleeve will contain five punch card sheets with pieces to construct a 3D Luna Mausoleum card model, without the need for scissors, glue or to fold any parts. Created by Max and Kayley and with over 300+ hours of work by Eaten Alive Illustrations, the model can house the tarot cards from the game inside their limited edition vinyl of their first album and if placed over a light source in a dark room, reveal the constellations of the ‘Celestial Comedown’ above you.

Sky Valley Mistress is back. Pilot Kayley “Hell Kitten” Davies and Commander Max “Leather Messiah” Newsome launch you into the Sonic Stratosphere with an audio journey fuelled by 70’s hard rock, driven off the road to a fresh new destination.

Taking you through desert rock grooves and mountainous riffs, you are guided by Kayley’s soulfully smoked voice with her range of soaring, delicate and searing melodies, as the band ride peaks and valleys of dynamics and pace with a brand new selection of fuzzed up guitars, organs, real orchestras and a children’s choir. Twisting influences of Queens of the Stone Age with Portishead and turning from Spiritualised-sized gospel choruses to the gallow heavy swing of Black Sabbath with sound as fast as light to create a modern classic that is entirely their own.

This is a demonstration. of their refusal to wait for permission to create a record that stands in scale with some of the most monumental albums in rock. The band’s intent behind creating Luna Mausoleum was that it should be “greater and beyond all reason” It's in your hands.

Tears Before Bedtime is the sparkling new album by the Would-be-goods, Jessica Griffin’s band of pop adventurers. Since The Camera Loves Me, their cult classic 1988 debut for the legendary él Records, they have blazed a musical trail through indie guitar pop, with a garage band edge and forays into other territories - glam rock, tango, French chanson… The result is unique and timeless.

The songs on Tears Before Bedtime balance delicacy and power. Perfect pop melodies are delivered in Jessica’s gorgeous and idiosyncratic voice. Her lyrics are intelligent and wry, wistful and witty. Every song tells a story, taking us on a journey through space and time, from belle époque Paris to a 1960s London biker café, from a riverbank in ancient Greece to a 1970s teenage bedroom.

Listening to a Would-be-goods album is like wandering through a gallery of portraits. Innocence gives way to experience. Danger lurks amid the lights of the funfair in the 1950s carousel whirl of The Gallopers. The sinister Dr Love promises heaven but sends you down to hell, to the sound of a last dance in a smoky soul basement. A nymph meets a god in disguise in a garage-band take on a Greek myth (Tears for Leda). The Rose Tattoo is the tale of a doomed love in a sultry Southern state. Don't Come Crying To Me flames an ex-lover to the sound of Bollywood horns and shivery guitar. In Madame X a portrait painter vents his fury on a spoilt socialite beauty. The album closes with a sweetly jazzy lullaby (The Moon Doesn't Mind).

Formerly one third of the much-loved trio Black Box Recorder, alongside The Auteurs’ Luke Haines and Jesus and Mary Chain guitarist John Moore, the British singer-songwriter Sarah Nixey has steadily gained acclaim as a solo artist who makes savvy, sophisticated and poised pop.

Delivering vocals with a detached elegance over opulent tracks, any perceived nonchalance in Nixey’s luxe, cut glass voice belies her empathy, where social commentary serves as protest, both explicit and implied. Like Billy Bragg deepfaked as prime Julie Andrews, this strange but effective juxtaposition radiates soft power.

‘Lies of the Land’ depicts a corrupt post-Brexit and Covid-19 world where inequality and division flourish. ‘England's On Fire’ delves into the nuanced concepts of patriotism and nationalism, and ‘Pleasure Bay’ narrates the story of a love affair with a deprived yet beautiful English seaside town, written after Nixey left London, drawn back to the Dorset coast.

More than just a political record though, Nixey was drawn to the poetic elements of living too, telling stories of life and death, love and loss, conflicts and symmetry, in an intimate and close-up way, as if whispering secrets to her listeners.

The four songs on side A came about in November 2022 for a winter solstice celebration at Oslo Badstuforening. Our take on this was that the solstice invites reflections on the relationship between night and day. Does the day spring out of the darkness of the preceding night or does the night follow and swallow the light of the day? Is it Saturday Night or Sunday Morning? Are we running from the past or catching up with the future? Moving from A to B, Lidskjalv has existed as a demo since the 90s. Many versions have been made, but this is the first proper recording of the song.

The passage of time is the future becoming the present. It moves forward in circles like a rolling wheel. Balder, Osiris and Jesus are all vegetation gods emulating the turn of the seasons in their eternal return. After the death of winter, life emerges anew. But not only this; there is also the promise of each dawn bringing a Better Day. According to Snorre, after the Fimbul Winter and Ragnarok, there is a new Earth. From the ashes emerges a better place. This holds also the idea of progress. It is at the core of being a prog band; each album is an improvement on the last, an exploration of new territory, a different perspective.

And just as the new and better world with Balder’s resurrection from Hel only comes AFTER Fimbul and Ragnarok, so each album goes through this phase, in its becoming, of struggle, adversity and slowing down to imperceptible glacial movement. Maybe this is more so with this album than before, with multiple personnel changes during the process. The future, however, springs ever green; from our personal Fimbul and Ragnarok, we bring you the rebirth of Balder. The night belongs to the day, each dawn more glorious than the last, in the rerun of forever and ever until the gears shift and a different sun shines on a new horizon. (Benediktator)

The Mommyheads return with their 17th record, No Quietus—a bold, genre-blurring exploration of life’s only certainty: death. Far from morbid, this album pulses with vitality, weaving prog-rock ambition, synth-driven rebellion, and danceable grooves into a sonic tapestry that’s as thoughtprovoking as it is infectious.

From the geo-political funeral march of “Triumph and Crash” to the Bee Gees-tinged existential musings of “Heaven’s Gate,” the band dissects mortality through the lens of society, love, and self. Tracks like “Black Veins” and “I’m Your Apocalypse” reveal frailty and defiance in equal measure, while the title track grapples with the weight of final goodbyes. Side two deepens the journey with anthems of resilience (“Finally Free,” “Strong”) and a closing reminder:“It’s Only Life.”

A concept record about death that feels urgently alive, No Quietus is The Mommyheads at their most ambitious—proof that even in the face of the inevitable, there’s room for hope, groove, and a little dark humor.
