This Issue: Responses from the whole label team, and Denny Stilwell, Head of Mack Avenue Music Group

When and where did the label begin?

Mack Avenue was founded in 1999 by business woman and philanthropist Gretchen Valade from the Detroit area and very much has historical roots there. While we had a very early office in Seattle, Washington which closed around 2005 (and where our head of A&R, Will Wakefield, is still located), we opened an office in Los Angeles in 2006 along with an admin and warehouse facility in the suburbs of Detroit.

Is there a genre that you would consider to be the label’s “signature style,” or is it a mix?

Certainly jazz! Although it really is a mix of genres that we consider jazz-adjacent. That said, recent ambitions and operational changes have energized our A&R outlook and we are open to a variety of artists and genres. You probably will not see any rap, traditional country or metal releases on our near future release schedule but we don’t rule out most genres.

What is the meaning behind the name for the label?

We wish there was a sexier answer to this question! The first office was on Mack Avenue in the Detroit area, hence the name. Pretty simple!

How would you describe the average fan of the label?

Passionate. Knowledgeable. We seem to have a lot of committed fans and repeat customers who love what we do. And as we’ve rolled out some classic jazz reissues from the Strata East label, Oscar Peterson and Erroll Garner, more collectors have become fans of the label.

Who or what has been a new find (on the label or otherwise) you’d like to rave about?

That’s easy. Check these out: Zohar and Adam, and Ekep Nkwelle. Both have fantastic debut albums coming from us this year.

We know you can’t choose, but what’s been your favorite label release, and why?

Denny Stilwell: You are right, we can’t choose! That is such a hard question. Recently we’ve been honored to be the caretaker for the Strata East imprint from the ‘70’s and that series of high quality reissues has been a joy to release. So much terrific music and there are more reissues coming this year. Our ongoing relationship with the Oscar Peterson Estate is also a bright spot for the label. We have a gorgeous 6-LP / 4 CD box set coming in a few months called ‘World Tour’ to celebrate his centennial.

Adam Zelinka, General Manager: This is a really hard question… I have favorites for different reasons… so I’m going to give you three.. and these are by no means in order or definitive.. this is what comes to mind at this particular moment… I’m not even numbering this group: Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble, Jackets XL by Yellowjackets, and Be Water by Christian Sands.

What is your stance on color vinyl? What’s the most unique color LP or overall packaging you’ve ever seen or released? We have several colored vinyl in the Mack Avenue catalog. When it works with the artist and the release, we partake. There are certain releases that aren’t suited for color vinyl (ie, the previously mentioned Strata East line) so we look for other unique elements to highlight those releases. Color is always an option in our back pocket, though.

The most unique package that we released was the Erroll Garner “Liberation In Swing: Centennial Collection” in 2021. Four 180 gram LP’s, twelve CD’s, five 45’s, 60-page hard bound book, a cassette…it was a fully custom package. It’s sold out (there are probably a few on Ebay) but we still have a few of the companion piece, “The Complete Symphony Hall Concert” which is contained within the 60 page hardbound book. It’s also a spectacular piece.

How do you feel about the rising costs of vinyl records? And what about the continued popularity of the CD format? No one likes rising costs. We do what we can to keep reasonable margins so that fans find our vinyl affordable. We put a lot of love and energy into every piece of vinyl and we want them in homes not in a warehouse somewhere.

The CD market is still there! At least for our adult fans/buyers. From an audio standpoint, it’s a great format. Hi quality sound in a fairly portable format. We are continuing to make CD’s (the Oscar Peterson box that was mentioned earlier will be available in a 4-CD package with a 20 page booklet) and we will until the market tells us there is no longer demand.

How do you view the issue of being environmentally sustainable within the music industry?

It’s critical to reduce plastic from our products, for sure. That is, and has been, a challenge. Mack Avenue stopped using CD jewel cases about 12 years ago in favor of digipaks. We removed plastic from our digipaks around 2016 or ‘17 and got pushback from fans about it because the digipaks were so thin. So, we modified our digipaks to contain less plastic but haven’t yet eliminated it altogether.

How important are issues like mental health and social justice to you and the label?

Our policies and health plans have always contained resources for employees that have been impacted by mental health while our values statements support DEI initiatives. I think all of us at Mack Avenue have been touched personally by both of these issues. Supporting them is an important part of the employee experience here.

Want to shout out a personal favorite record store or retail establishment? Now’s your chance:

Denny: It’s no longer there but when I was in middle school there was a store called The Underground in my hometown. It was where I bought my first vinyl album which I played on a hand me down vinyl/cassette/8-track player. When I moved to LA, The Record Surplus in West LA was my go-to spot near my house. I am glad it’s still there and when I am in that neighborhood I stop in.

WARCHILD HELP(2)

HELP(2) is a brand new collaborative album, inspired by the landmark 1995 release HELP, which brings music lovers together in support of War Child’s vital work delivering immediate aid, education, specialist mental health support, and protection to children affected by conflict around the world. Blistering and hypnotic, Ilana (The Creator) (2019) marked the beginning of a new chapter for Mdou Moctar. The Sophs’ honesty, flamingly intrusive thoughts, and genre-spreading caught the attention of Rough Trade founders Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee immediately. When Ramon sent a demo reel out to his favorite indies, he wasn’t expecting any replies. But Travis and Lee were in his inbox the next day, asking if he’d hop on a call.

Rough Trade heard the sort of creativity and variety — and “don’t expect me to act pretty” sentiment — that could get The Sophs — including Ramon, Sam Yuh (keyboards), Austin Parker Jones (electric guitar), Seth Smades (acoustic guitar), Devin Russ (drums), and Cole Bobbitt (bass) — a slot on nearly any stage.They heard a five-song seed of their debut record GOLDSTAR, out March 13th, 2026

At any moment, The Sophs are entering pop-punk; blazing through funk; talk-singing to the audience. Their enthusiasm for every iteration is evident, and Ramon’s rich, full voice deftly nestles into endless categories, utterly chameleonic.

“We never try to be as versatile as we end up being,” Ramon said. GOLDSTAR has a Delta Blues-style song; it has a ZZ Top-inspired tune. To some degree, The Sophs see song creation like pop art: they’re focused on the idea of reproducing something over and over again until it’s meaningless.

The genre mix comes on the heels of sparks of inspiration: Ramon will bring Yuh a song and pull out a piece (e.g., “I want drums like that”) and they’ll create something altogether new. Take the vaudevillian “THE DOG DIES IN THE END.” In an aughts pop-punk croon, Ramon takes listeners through a laundry list of intrusive, cruel thoughts, cresting over Yuh’s accordion. On sunny-rock “DEATH IN THE FAMILY,” he’s similarly disaffected, with the tongue-in-cheek refrain “I need a death in the family” seeking pity and attention that covers up any misdeeds.

Spirituality remains the heartbeat of Anjmile’s work.

“Songwriting feels like a prayer, a plea, or a question,” he says. Across the album, sacredness feels alive and imperfect — a practice of breathing, wondering, forgiving. The album hums with that same sacred energy: messy and full of grace.

You’re Free to Go is a portrait of transformation — not as a wound, but as an opening. Richly textured, this collection of songs is an honest reflection of life’s fluctuations. It holds space for contradiction and finds liberation in tenderness. The twin trombone frontline is an esoteric but noble tradition in jazz, harking back to the famed 1950s recordings of Kai Windings and JJ Johnson.Whilerespectingthetradition,theinternationallyrenowned trombonists Paul Dunlea (from Cork) and Trevor Mires (from London) are not traditionalists, and their collaborative project Silfra showcases their thoroughly contemporary skills as composers and arrangers to create a fascinatingly diverse set of trombone led music. Silfra is the name of a place in Iceland where the tectonic plates of Europe and America meet and rub together. "I scuba-dived between the two plates and touched them both at the same time," says Dunlea, and the album presents a true transatlantic meeting of talent. The project was conceived after Paul and Trevor worked together on a project at London's famous Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, and the music was recorded at the legendary New York studio of RudyVanGelderwithaspeciallyassembledbandoftheirfavorite US musicians.

For the drum chair, Trevor chose Billy Kilson, famed for his long associationwithDaveHolland,whilePaulselectedbassistIkeSturm (Donny McCaslin) and pianist Jim Ridl (Kurt Elling, Joe Locke). Ryan Keberle contributes a third trombone to some of the sections to create a full, lush sound. The result is a stunning album that combines influences from both the leaders' multi-faceted careers, Paul's Irish heritage, and their deep love of the jazz tradition.

Silfra is a beautifully realised album from two master musicians completely at ease in their surroundings.

Each of Colleen’s albums are shaped by her predetermined distinct instrumentation and parameters, including works composed entirely of music boxes, pocket synthesizers, and antiquated stringed instruments. The connective essence of Schott’s music is in her ability to create pieces within this transcendent specificity that are both expansive and imbued with profound emotions. Libres antes del final is an album that reaches for the hope and desire to be truly freed from unnecessary suffering and harmful thoughts before reaching the end of one’s life cycle.

“In April 2024, I decided that deeply impacted me, one on which I had procrastinated for years: learning to swim again, in the sea, after 30 years of water phobia. I came to see and live the journey of learning to swim again as an adult, with each successive step feeling like a personal victory and milestone, in the unstable environment of the sea, with the discomfort it can bring, and the reality of facing your own limitations with the body and mind you have right now, a powerful metaphor for what it’s like to have to learn to live and go through life every single day. I was especially blown away by the fact that it took me way longer to start to swim 5 cm away from where my feet still touched the ground, than it subsequently took me to swim 250 meters away from the shore. Could this mean that everything in life works this way, that the first small step really is the hardest to take?” - Colleen

Schott composed and performed Libres on the Moog Matriarch, centering the record on a pulse-driven, bubbling energy with constant momentum. She then reamped the music in one of her favorite spaces in Barcelona, Casa Montjuic, accentuating the album’s sense of movement. The reamping process adds a literal physicality to the album, as carefully chosen and placed microphones (including the famous Neumann KU100 binaural head) capture both the venue’s PA sound itself and the venue’s acoustics.

Colleen’s music translates snapshots of Schott’s life into singular pieces, often instrumentally transmuting a dense web of sensations into wondrous sonic terrain. Schott’s deft manipulation of the Moog Matriarch makes each subtle adjustment feel monumental. The tender “Mis armas se habían caído al suelo” skitters sonar-like echoes across a warm pool of organ chords before giving in to a gentle wash of oceanic feedback. The bounce of “Puertas de mi cuerpo” is transformed by every textural shift where the steady arpeggio of “Antídoto” is broken apart by dizzying shifts in pulse. “Aguas abiertas” (or, “Open Waters”) stands as the cinematic centerpiece to the album as each movement dives deeper beneath the surface and reflects the magic of discovering microcosms on every level one plunges further down. Title track “Libres antes del final” harnesses the album’s sense of urgency as the intensity swells and undulates into a climactic conclusion unlike any piece Schott has made before.

Colleen’s music ruminates on central existential questions: To what extent are we responsible for our thinking, feelings and actions? Can we ever be freed from the endlessly spinning twin wheels of our own brain and heart? Libres antes del final answers them with an exuberant release, a work of rejuvenation and revitalization, of finding light in facing the unknown.

more eaze is the moniker of Brooklyn-based composer, orchestrator, and multiinstrumentalist, mari maurice. A renowned collaborator both in performance and on recordings, maurice’s own work is a fantasia, a reflection of her curious and explorative musical mind, encompassing entire spectrums of sound from a wide sonic pallet of electro-acoustic textures, folk traditions, and pop forms that pirouette into fully realized ecosystems. sentence structure in the country is a definitive statement of the matchless quality of more eaze’s skill as player and musical thinker. The album relishes the ecstatic in performance and collaboration with an inviting wit and incisive compositions, imbuing tenderness, frustration, and joy into each passage.

The title is an acknowledgement of the vernacular that shaped maurice’s musical production. As Coltrane said, “It all has to do with it.” maurice grew up playing fiddle in traditional folk and country tunes, and while playing on her album is entirely different, her reverence for the evolution of folk forms and her playing remain integral to those performances. Informing her production choices were maurice’s well- chosen collaborators: Wendy Eisenberg on electric guitar, piano and voice, Henry Earnest on electric guitar, Alice Gerlach on cello, Jade Guterman on acoustic guitar, and Ryan Sawyer on drums. maurice explains how her collaborators helped sculpt the album’s sound: “There are ways Jade or Wendy choose to voice chords that are not how I’d play them in this context, but that’s kind of the point. Their voices redefine what I’m making but also help me define my own.”

Playing with these different combos helped me determine what the very core elements of the pieces were and then the songs also took on a life of their own this way. It’s like a feedback loop: as we continue to perform them, there’s this precedent that is set with what the piece could be.”

Released in 2000, Alan Braxe and Fred Falke's “Intro” is five minutes of faultlessly melancholy, perfectly elegant, dance music that nudged French House into the future.

“Intro” is now being re-released for its 25th birthday, using the remastered version of the song from the 2023 re-issue of Alan Braxe, Fred Falke & Friends - The Upper Cuts album, with Braxe and Falke also making new remixes of their golden child. Given that “Intro” was pretty much perfect the first time around, the results are astoundingly strong.

Falke’s remix takes “Intro” into new dimensions, cosmic and suspiciously dubby, a newly-recorded bass line sending the mix on its psychedelic way. Braxe’s remix is raw and dirty, a “hotel room edit” as he calls it, that nods to the history of French House as it sparkles up the spine.

Both tunes are evidence that - actually - you can remix the un-remixable, so long as it is done with infinite love and incredible skill.

One of the clearest examples of an album that crafts a strange and beautiful world not quite like any other is Rocketship’s 1996 full-length debut A Certain Smile, A Certain Sadness. Tough Love

Almost a year to the day from the release of their debut EP, Cardiff-based quintet Midding return on 6th February with a new five song collection entitled .44, an oblique reference to Son of Sam serial killer David Berkowitz and his connection to The Process Church of the Final Judgment cult. The Process Church carries a damaged reputation (in part by association), but in its infancy its spiritual radicalism, aesthetic manipulations and commitment to a burgeoning counterculture make good source material for future inspirations. Like Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV and Skinny Puppy before them, Midding understand there's equal fascination to be found in their dark as the light.

Made between Rat Trap Studios and Fairoak, their own home-built recording set-up, these new songs represent the first time they've set live drums to record. The results are marked, shifting from the linear pulse of that first EP to something more dynamic and agile. A bedroom project has now become a fully functioning group. As with the previous EP, all five songs were recorded to tape, which gives .44 its in-room feel, imbuing a sense of claustrophobia that neatly matches the subject matter of the lyrics, referencing cultdom, serial killer fanaticism, depression and, ultimately, ecstatic release. Tracks like 'All For You' and 'Nuisance' flex with a melodic confidence that's both accessible and off-kilter, though the greatest transgression can be heard on 'For A Little While', a churning spacerock blast overlaid with indecipherable, automatic writing-derived lyrics that suggest some kind of Lovecraftian portal may have been opened up in Wales this past year. Into that portal we might follow...

Luka Kuplowsky’s voice is a paradox at times too hushed to be captured, as if it’s going to disappear like smoke, then it's as big as the sky It is a voice that bends the ear to listen and whose music carves out a unique space for poetic language and improvisatory playfulness In the last half-decade his songwriting has blossomed into a kaleidoscope of sounds that hinge on the interval between genres; somewhere between folk, jazz, ambient, blues, avant-pop and electronic

The Grass Grows, Antonych Grows adapts Ukrainian poet Bohdan Ihor Antonych (1909-37) to song, placing his words into a world of surreal and sensuous sonics Kuplowsky wrote the record in what he described as a trance state, simultaneously writing and tracking over six days, arranging and collaging Antonych’s poetry into music. Months later, with his band, the record opened into a wide scope of jazz, new age and cosmic balladry

While Kuplowsky’s 2024 album How Can I Possibly Sleep When There Is Music embraced process in the web of poetic connection that arose in interpreting the poems of Zen Buddhist poet Ryōkan Taigu, The Grass Grows... narrows its focus, drawing upon Antonych’s poetry to explore his philosophical preoccupations with Lemko paganism, modernist poetry, and a search for eternity If How Can I Possibly Sleep stretched out from Ryōkan towards a millenia of poets, Antonych’s poems are a vehicle for stretching out towards everything, taking in plants, bugs, and the cosmos, offering a song of transcendence, earthly and spiritual. And Kuplowsky, a century later, enters the cyclical stream of Antonych’s mythopoetic travels.

Xylitol, aka producer and DJ Catherine Backhouse, shifts up the refinement and musical breadth for her second album Blumenfantasie, the follow-up to her Planet Mu debut Anemones.

With Blumenfantasie, Xylitol wanted “to make space and for the music to float and propel at once”, finding routes through the pointillistic figures, cascading synths and the meditative stillness of kosmische musik and bolder breakbeat programming. She reaches this delicate balance through careful subtraction, hoping “to convey a sense of intimacy and sadness but without sentimentality” which she manages with a feel and sound that's raw and intuitive.

Blumenfantasie rolls through detailed jungle workouts that flutter and bleep, through beatless ambience, taking a rare dip below 160 bpm for the elegiac Mirjana, the album’s most explicit nod to Krautrock with a drum break chopped up from Amon Duul II’s anthemic ‘Archangel’s Thunderbird’, through to Halo, a bare bones grime rhythm that calls to mind the missing link between industrial pioneers Nurse With Wound and Wiley's Eskibeat.

Catherine cast her net to draw in experimental audiovisual duo Sculpture and Reading based post-rock band The Leaf Library as collaborators, pulling the former’s whirling eddies of musique concrète into a slice of sublime aquatic jungle, and the latter’s radiophonic folksong into a dark and disorientating breakbeat workout equally indebted to Source Direct as to Broadcast.

Blumenfantasie moves with a confident, self-effacing fluidity which has been informed by DJ Bunnyhausen’s more regular DJ gigs. She speculates ‘if this album feels more cohesive than its predecessor it's likely because I've been DJing a lot more, with Worthing Techno Militia, with central and eastern european electronica collective Slav to the Rhythm, as well as being part of Italo Disco crew Flex. Moving between these zones seemed to open up hidden pathways between the disparate musical trajectories they represent.'

While Anemones contrasted the rough and the delicate, its successor is an album built for the head, hips and heart, with painterly sounds and a sense of intimacy that encourages deep listening while keeping its eyes on the strobelight and its feet on the dancefloor.
