eard the joke about Jesus’ transfiguration? Me neither. Odd, isn’t it? After all, jokes abound about every other episode in his life: his birth (remember that absurd opening sequence of Monty Python's Life of Brian? Not forgetting that wonderfully offmessage Christmas card: “why fuss about Christmas – is the birth of a man who believes he’s God really such a rare event?”) You name it: Cana, walking on water, feeding the five thousand, even his crucifixion: all have been sent up comically by someone, somewhere. All except the transfiguration. Which is a great pity, as a good joke can freshen our perspective on an extraordinary event, helping us squeeze the meaning out. But could the transfiguration maybe reveal something about God’s own sense of humour?

This, let’s recall, is the unique occasion in his earthly life, when Jesus radiates his divine glory as Son of God. So what amazing A-listers does he choose to share this supremely transcendent moment with? A bunch of flaky panto clowns, that’s who! Peter, his foot rarely out of his mouth; James and John – that pantomime-horse act with one beady eye ever on the main chance; Moses and Elijah? OK, not the ugly sisters, but an intensive anger-management course beckons, all the same. Basically, people like you, me and the guy on the pew next to us. Seriously, who but God would be crazy enough to share his glory with the likes of us? Who but God would become human, suffer and die to make it all happen? And yet it’s true. It IS funny in a way. But also mindblowing.

Finding hope

In pointing out their potential, we have the power to set them free. We notice how important blessing others is to Jesus. He made clear that the way we treat others is the way we treat him. Through our words and actions, do our friends and neighbours experience us as a blessing?

by Sr Thérèse Garman Abraham was blessed by God to be a blessing to others. God sends us on the same mission. But before we can bless others, we have to be living and responding to the blessings God has given us, because these are what we share. We can be a powerful blessing to others through forgiveness, restoring relationships, and using words of kindness and encouragement. Holding on to hurts has no place in our mission. Our families and friends long to hear words of approval or acceptance and affection, especially after disagreements and mistakes. With these spoken blessings, we express the value of the person.

Sr Thérèse Garman is a Sister of Our Lady of Providence.

Hope bids us live fully in the present, giving our all to the life of the family, for the best way to prepare a solid future is to live well in the present. Pope Francis

consequences than we realise. A smile, a few words of encouragement, a thank you or a compliment can make a big difference to someone else. We may never see the impact that our words and actions can have but we know what it feels like to have our day brightened by the kindness or thoughtfulness of another person. Our words and actions may be the one glimmer of hope in another person’s day – we can make all the difference.

It has been said that hope is as essential for humans as food, water or oxygen. Hope helps people to keep going when it would be easier to give up. We all find it hard to be hopeful sometimes and we need others to help us with this. The many small but positive things that we do Catherine McElhinney is a Primary without even thinking about School Headteacher and the author of My School Diary, available from Redemptorist them can have much bigger Publications.

Living in a family makes it hard for us to feign or lie; we cannot hide behind a mask. If that authenticity is inspired by love, then the Lord reigns there, with his joy and his peace. The spirituality of family love is made up of thousands of small but real gestures. In that variety of gifts and encounters which deepen communion, God has his dwelling place.
