Introducing Denis McBride C.Ss.R.

Your Sunday Missal

Designed to help anyone prepare for Sunday Mass and take an active part in its celebration, this Missal contains a short introduction to the special character of each Sunday, and the Mass text is laid out in a straightforward way. This Missal has a leatherette cover, gold-embossed lettering, colourful ribbons and high-quality Bible paper which means that it should become a treasured companion for a lifetime.

Denis McBride is a Redemptorist priest, lecturer, author and Publishing Director of Redemptorist Publications. He has studied at great universities under great teachers but he wears his learning lightly. His work is never antiquated, overly academic or built on borrowed insight: what Denis offers is fresh thinking delivered in his inimitable style; charming, down-to-earth and gentle. The library of Denis’ work majors on two themes: the Gospels and prayer, in the belief that through these a greater personal connection with God can be made. In studying and reflecting on the Jesus of the Gospels, a deeper relationship is gained with the Lord; when this is coupled with an active and personal prayer life, it is little wonder that people are enabled, through Denis’ work, to grow closer to the Redeemer.

The texts for all Sunday services in the Roman Catholic Church for the three-year cycle are included in this Missal. Alongside these are a number of additional resources, including the two Eucharistic prayers for reconciliation, and four for Masses for various occasions. The main ordinary texts of the Mass are also given in Latin. Additionally, we have provided an original prayer for each day of the week, a selection of litanies, prayers by St Alphonsus Liguori, including his Stations of the Cross.

Denis’ work is rooted in the ground of human existence – whatever flights he takes into the world of the Gospels, he always returns to the world of everyday, to the humus, the ground of humanity, forever linking everything back to people’s lives, in the mix and muddle of our daily calendar. He has always insisted we should study two books together – the Gospels and the story of our own life. Without that lively connection the Gospels remain a distant memory and our lives remain starved of the sustenance of the word of God. Always we are encouraged to see our own experience reflected in those around us, helping us to empathise and show love to those people that we might have felt we had little or nothing in common with: love and understanding bridge conflicting worlds.

Having a personal Sunday Missal is an aid to prayerful devotion to God and helps you know, understand and love the Mass. Your Sunday Missal will deepen and nurture the celebration of faith.

Denis is noted for his eloquence, his humour, his ability to open up the word of God and bring clarity to how to live in society as a Christian and a Catholic. Far from being a distant author and lecturer, living in an ivory tower, Denis has the ability to speak in the language of the marketplace, in what Pope Francis has called “the grammar of simplicity”.

“Such is Fr McBride’s reputation as a spiritual writer that any new work promises a straightforward, uncomplicated and intensely pastoral approach. He has an impressive ability to explain even the most complicated scriptural themes in a way that is accessible to those who have never had the opportunity for academic study of the Bible. He is also able to pick up on concepts which might seem “quirky” to the uninitiated and show that they are, in fact, highly relevant.” The Catholic Times

G SPEL The

Devised by Fr Denis McBride C.Ss.R. and George Allen

The Gospel Journey is an exciting and engaging board game that challenges the players’ knowledge of the New and Old Testament. It takes the form of a pilgrimage to Paradise and is aimed at ages 14 upwards. It can be enjoyed by 2-4 players.

Journey Board Game

NEW

The Gospel Journey is biblically orientated with a series of questions on: • The Birth of Jesus • Mary • Joseph • King Herod • The Wise Men • The Old Testament

• John the Baptist • The Parables • The Miracles • Women in the Gospel • Paul • The Disciples

• Peter • Judas • The Last Supper • The Passion and Death of Jesus • The Resurrection

The game is fun, educational, and stimulating – a lovely way to learn about the Gospels and also something of the Old Testament and Saint Paul. It is ideal for schools, families and parish groups. Among the question boxes that go around the circumference of the board are random Rewards and Penalty boxes and Pot Luck questions. These add to the fun and variety of the game. Rewards are given to acknowledge the kind things we do on earth, thus offering an opportunity to move closer to Paradise. Penalties are given for doing what is unpleasant or mean in our world; this is punished by delay on the journey to Paradise. Each player has a counter and a figure of the same colour: the counter for going around the outer boxes of questions and challenges; the figure for advancing on the journey to Paradise. The first player COMING to enter Paradise is the winner.

Denis McBride C.Ss.R. “I think this book is a brilliant exercise to deepen our faith not only during the period of Lent, but any time of the year. The suffering that happened 2000 years ago is still happening in the modern world and Fr Denis McBride is inviting us to reflect about the pain people are going through now. The book touches human hearts very deeply.” Fr Sunith, St Anthony of Padua Parish, Anerley, London The first station

Scripture

As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” He answered him, “You say so.” Then the chief priests accused him of many things. Pilate asked him again, “Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you.” But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed. Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked. Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. Then he answered them, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” For he realised that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. Pilate spoke to them again, “Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” They shouted back, “Crucify him!” Pilate asked them, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him!” So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified. Stations of the Cross then and now Denis McBride C.Ss.R.

NEW

In Catholic churches across the world, from the busiest cities to the most remote villages, a series of simple crosses or fourteen images - the Stations of the Cross - describe the passion and death of Jesus. They begin with Pontius Pilate condemning Jesus to death and steadily move towards the moment when his mother and a few faithful followers place Jesus’ body in a borrowed tomb. Sometimes there is a fifteenth station: the resurrection shows us that Jesus’ suffering fulfilled a purpose. Even on the cross, Jesus was not alone. Yet the way of the cross is not confined to a lonely road in Jerusalem two thousand years ago: it is a busy highway winding through every village, town and city in our modern world; the experience of millions of people who face personal agony and loss at some moment or other. Jesus’ suffering and death are, for each one of us, our reality today.

Denis McBride reflectively guides us along the way of the cross. He contrasts the beauty and solemn simplicity of the more traditional Stations by artist Curd Lessig with modern images that challenge us to link Jesus’ story to the struggle of our everyday lives. Through its rich array of scripture passages, paintings, poetry, prayers, photographs and reflections, Stations of the Cross – then and now becomes a companion not only on our Lenten journey but throughout the year: suffering is not limited to one liturgical season. Whether we walk in solitude or with others, this book translates the passion of Jesus into our own life and times. The Gospel best comes alive when the story of Jesus resonates deeply within our heart and our personal experience. Let Stations of the Cross – then and now shine new light on your own journey. Since then, his principal areas of interest and writing have been the human story and the Gospels: his work has always struggled to keep open a conversation between the drama of people’s lives and the four great narratives of Christian beginning. If that conversation ends, he argues, Christianity will be consigned to a museum.

Journeying with Jonah

the struggle to find yourself Denis McBride C.Ss.R.

In this new book Fr Denis has chosen to explore the character of Jonah – a somewhat unlikely hero. The prophet Jonah is a sympathetic partner, albeit a curious one, to help us review our lives. Although a believer in God, Jonah struggles to come to terms with the awful strangeness of God’s choices, particularly God’s mercy; he grapples to find his true self and purpose in life; he tries to flee from the presence of God; he is angry when he finds that God is not angry but all-merciful. Jonah is offered to us as an unusual teacher – awkward, reluctant, disobedient, opinionated, fearful, flighty: the prophet who remains stubborn to the end. But his story celebrates the beauty of the indiscriminate mercy of God, a message for our time. The story of Jonah is for anyone who is reflecting on their own life. Journeying with Jonah - 2 CDs Denis McBride C.Ss.R.

In 2016, Fr Denis addressed the annual meeting of the Conference of Religious of Ireland (CORI) held in Dublin. His two lectures, about an hour each, reflect on Journeying with Jonah: the struggle to find yourself. Jonah appears as someone who has emerged from among us: someone who has to struggle to find his true identity, someone who has to discover his direction in life, someone who has to allow his own outlook on life to be shaped by God’s mercy. This is an ancient narrative that speaks gently to our own stories today.

“Mirror, mirror, on the wall” For Len Kofler, the staff, and the students of the Institute of St Anselm

When we look in the mirror our critical eye comes into its own, educated from genesis for disapproval: it takes over the business of appraising what is presented to it. Standing or sitting, when we look in the mirror we submit to this eye and begin the ritual of repair, honing in on what needs fixing, adjusting to make good.

Reflecting with Paintings Volume 1 Denis McBride C.Ss.R.

The mirror is the new confessional in the age of image and appearance, the place where we are both penitent and priest. And like a good penitent we try to remedy the flaws we acknowledge to ourselves: the daily ritual begins in accusation, striving earnestly for absolution. So

Denis McBride C.Ss.R. Praying the Rosary

a journey through scripture and art Denis McBride C.Ss.R.

Fr McBride takes a fresh look at the Rosary in this beautifully illustrated book. Through the four sets of mysteries he takes us on a leisurely journey through twenty episodes in the lives of Jesus and Mary, offering us prayerful insights on the way. The format for each decade is simple: first there is a reading from scripture, which is followed by a reflection on the passage; a painting is also included which offers its own take on the subject, accompanied by a brief reflection; finally there is a prayer on some aspect of the mystery. Focusing on a scriptural understanding of the mysteries, this prayerful book will prove a sure companion for everyone who loves the Rosary. Code: 1556 Price: £12.95 ISBN: 9780852314159

“The language of Praying the Rosary is, therefore, one of companionship and friendly dialogue rather than of instruction. It is not one more of how many ‘how to’ books, but is, rather, an invitation to rest, reflect and pray.”

Six Women from the Bible Denis McBride C.Ss.R.

Fr Denis McBride, C.Ss.R. was invited to speak on Six Women from the Bible at a conference for Catholic head teachers. The two reflections were recorded before a live audience at Stratfordupon-Avon, hosted by EducareM. In the first DVD Fr Denis looks at the Five Women in the genealogy of Matthew’s Gospel. Why does Matthew include them among a list of men? Why these women? He explores the story of •

Tamar, who dresses as a prostitute to conceive a child

Rahab, who runs a house of prostitution in Jericho

Ruth, an outsider, who ensures the future of a Jewish family

The wife of Uriah, who sleeps with King David

Mary the mother of Jesus who conceives without Joseph

What do these women have in common? How do they progress the story of salvation so that the final name on the genealogy is Jesus who is called Christ?

8

In the second DVD, focusing on the Unnamed Woman at the house of Simon the Pharisee, we watch two spiritualties collide: the spirituality of Simon and the spirituality of Jesus. Both men look at the same sinful woman and see her radically differently. One sees a disease; the other sees a woman who shows great love. What shapes their outlook?

Denis McBride C.Ss.R. Journeying towards Jesus in Advent Denis McBride C.Ss.R.

Waiting on God Denis McBride C.Ss.R.

One of the enduring themes developed throughout the biblical story is waiting on God: this is an attitude of stubborn trust in the face of adversity and a way of looking at life that remains firmly anchored in hope. Most of us live in a culture of immediacy where there is little tolerance for waiting, so there is mounting rage in the face of delays and setbacks: people act out their frustration and anger when what they want is not available instantly. This book develops a counter-cultural spirituality – a way of being that is a real gift for our present time.

In a world in which our high streets begin their celebration of Christmas months earlier, Advent is a countercultural “still small voice”. In this insightful and inspiring book, lavishly illustrated with images chosen by the author, Denis McBride guides us through the Advent season as we journey towards the celebration of the birth of Christ. Suitable for private reading or for use in groups, this book invites us to journey together towards a deeper appreciation of the true meaning of what we celebrate at Christmas. The response of the people has been warm and enthusiastic, and these two lectures on John’s Gospel were filmed and recorded as a DVD. In this DVD you can catch something of Fr Denis’ passion for his subject and his genial manner of communicating and sharing the beauty and depth of the Gospels.

“What wonderful insight! I am loving this book and feel I should tell others about it. It does feel like journeying with the Lord, from the wilderness onwards. It’s not just places in the past, but moments in our own experience that are explored. Father McBride has a genius for making old scriptures talk anew, so they land in your lap, saying very personal things. I am very grateful for this lovely and loving book.” Reviewed on www.rpbooks.co.uk

eard the joke about Jesus’ transfiguration? Me neither. Odd, isn’t it? After all, jokes abound about every other episode in his life: his birth (remember that absurd opening sequence of Monty Python's Life of Brian? Not forgetting that wonderfully offmessage Christmas card: “why fuss about Christmas – is the birth of a man who believes he’s God really such a rare event?”) You name it: Cana, walking on water, feeding the five thousand, even his crucifixion: all have been sent up comically by someone, somewhere. All except the transfiguration. Which is a great pity, as a good joke can freshen our perspective on an extraordinary event, helping us squeeze the meaning out. But could the transfiguration maybe reveal something about God’s own sense of humour?

This, let’s recall, is the unique occasion in his earthly life, when Jesus radiates his divine glory as Son of God. So what amazing A-listers does he choose to share this supremely transcendent moment with? A bunch of flaky panto clowns, that’s who! Peter, his foot rarely out of his mouth; James and John – that pantomime-horse act with one beady eye ever on the main chance; Moses and Elijah? OK, not the ugly sisters, but an intensive anger-management course beckons, all the same. Basically, people like you, me and the guy on the pew next to us. Seriously, who but God would be crazy enough to share his glory with the likes of us? Who but God would become human, suffer and die to make it all happen? And yet it’s true. It IS funny in a way. But also mindblowing.

Finding hope

In pointing out their potential, we have the power to set them free. We notice how important blessing others is to Jesus. He made clear that the way we treat others is the way we treat him. Through our words and actions, do our friends and neighbours experience us as a blessing?

by Sr Thérèse Garman Abraham was blessed by God to be a blessing to others. God sends us on the same mission. But before we can bless others, we have to be living and responding to the blessings God has given us, because these are what we share. We can be a powerful blessing to others through forgiveness, restoring relationships, and using words of kindness and encouragement. Holding on to hurts has no place in our mission. Our families and friends long to hear words of approval or acceptance and affection, especially after disagreements and mistakes. With these spoken blessings, we express the value of the person.

Sr Thérèse Garman is a Sister of Our Lady of Providence.

Hope bids us live fully in the present, giving our all to the life of the family, for the best way to prepare a solid future is to live well in the present. Pope Francis

consequences than we realise. A smile, a few words of encouragement, a thank you or a compliment can make a big difference to someone else. We may never see the impact that our words and actions can have but we know what it feels like to have our day brightened by the kindness or thoughtfulness of another person. Our words and actions may be the one glimmer of hope in another person’s day – we can make all the difference.

It has been said that hope is as essential for humans as food, water or oxygen. Hope helps people to keep going when it would be easier to give up. We all find it hard to be hopeful sometimes and we need others to help us with this. The many small but positive things that we do Catherine McElhinney is a Primary without even thinking about School Headteacher and the author of My School Diary, available from Redemptorist them can have much bigger Publications.

Living in a family makes it hard for us to feign or lie; we cannot hide behind a mask. If that authenticity is inspired by love, then the Lord reigns there, with his joy and his peace. The spirituality of family love is made up of thousands of small but real gestures. In that variety of gifts and encounters which deepen communion, God has his dwelling place.

Your Sunday Missal Limited Edition

The international Catholic weekly The Tablet sent its assistant editor to Hawkstone, who reviewed Denis’ contribution to the teaching of the Gospel:

With a gold cover and gilt edges to the pages, the Limited Edition of Your Sunday Missal will make a beautiful gift to treasure.

“Denis McBride is a superb raconteur and thought-provoking scripture scholar; he breaks open the Gospel in fresh and startling ways. His lectures and writings are designed to appeal to the heart as much as the head.” 01420 88222
