Lutheran Church of Redeemer

731 Peachtree Street Atlanta, GA

A Note from the Ordinand Grace and peace to you. I am overjoyed that you are here, whether in person or online to witness this life-giving day. My heart overflows with gratitude to God for each of you who prayed for me, encouraged me, and walked beside me on this journey. You never doubted God’s call on my life, and your presence today is a living testimony to the power of community.

To the congregations, synod, and seminaries that formed and nurtured me, Faith and Grace Lutheran (formerly St. Stephen’s), Decatur, Living Grace Lutheran, Tucker, Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Atlanta, Faith Lutheran, Warner Robins, St. John Lutheran, Griffin, Candler School of Theology at Emory, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, WELCA, ADLA, The Circle, and LWTRS-thank you. Your prayers, care, and faithful witness have guided and sustained me. I am especially grateful to those participating in today’s service and to the mentors, pastors, professors, spiritual directors, leaders, and students whose wisdom helped me discern God’s voice along the way. Throughout this time, God’s hand was subtle but steady, gently guiding me toward this day. I stand here today because of love the steadfast love of my “Bold Courage” sisters, my mother, my daughters, my husband, and the heavenly spirit of my granny Iris.

Being ordained at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer fills me with deep joy. This community has supported my spiritual formation throughout seminary and gave me the courage to live fully into the Lutheran identity I believe God always intended for me. I am deeply grateful for your love, your support, and your partnership in faith. With God’s help and yours, I pray to uphold the Gospel: to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with the God of love and the people of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Macon. Together, may we share and be good news for the sake of the world.

Drenched in the waters of baptism and stitched together with all of you in the tapestry of the Triune God’s ever-flowing love, I stand here as Roxann Deborah Thompson, grateful for this moment and for each of you.

You are welcomed to this service of Word and Meal, which includes the rite of ordination. Because all baptized members share in Christ’s ministry of love and service, the Church equips and supports them for their ministries in the world. Within this context of ministry, the Church calls some of its baptized members for specific ministries. Within the people of God and for the sake of the gospel ministry entrusted to all believers, God has instituted the office of ministry of Word and Sacrament.

In the ordination service, the Church entrusts this office to those who have accepted the Church’s call and sends them into this ministry.

Ordination is not a celebration at the completion of seminary education, nor merely a prerequisite for becoming a pastor. Instead, in ordination, the Holy Spirit works through the Church to set apart an individual for public ministry.

We worship today using the ancient form of Word and Meal. You are invited to participate as you are able in spoken word, song, prayer, and action as we celebrate the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The participation of the congregation is indicated with bold print.

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

Chorale Prelude on "Raise Yourself Up to Your God" by Ethel Smyth Jesus Loves Me arr. by Albert L. Travis

FOR BAPTISM

Blessed be the Holy Trinity, ☩ one God, by whose hand we are given new birth, by whose speaking we are given new life. Amen.

Joined to Christ in the waters of Baptism, we are welcomed, restored, and supported as citizens of the new creation. Let us give thanks for the gift of Baptism.

Holy God, holy and merciful, holy and mighty, you are the river of life, you are the everlasting wellspring. In mercy and might you have freed us from death and raised us with Jesus, the firstborn of the dead. In baptismal waters our old life is washed away, and in them we are born anew.

Glory to you for oceans and lakes, for rivers and streams. Honor to you for waters that wash us clean, quench our thirst and nurture both crops and creatures. Praise to you for the life-giving water of Baptism, the outpouring of the Spirit of the new creation.

Wash away our sin and all that separates us from you. Empower our witness to your resurrection. Strengthen our resolve in seeking justice for all.

Satisfy the world’s need through this living water. Where drought dries the earth, bring refreshment.

Where despair prevails, grant hope. Where chaos reigns, bring peace. We ask this through Christ, who with you and the Spirit reigns forever. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

The Lord be with you. |And also with you.

Almighty and merciful God, you built your church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and you instituted the office of the ministry of word and sacrament so that the apostolic and prophetic work might continue throughout the ages. Grant that Roxann, now to be ordained, may carry out this ministry faithfully in the power of your Spirit; through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.| Amen

+ WORD +

God speaks to us in Scripture reading, preaching, and song. We sit.

FIRST READING

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners,

Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-9

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, to provide for those who mourn in Zion to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities,

For I, the Lord, love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known among the nations and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed.

Word of God. Word of Life. | Thanks be to God.

PSALM 23

A Psalm of David, read together in unison.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

SECOND READING

Romans 8:31-39

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died more than that, who was raised to life is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall

separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Word of God. Word of Life. | Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL READING

The Holy Gospel, according to John. | Glory to you, O Lord.

John 15:9-17

As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing, but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me, but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

HYMN OF THE DAY #638

Blessed Assurance

Stanzas 1 and 2: Soloist

Stanza 3: All

NICENE CREED

We now profess the faith we share, using the words of the Nicene Creed: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the ☩ resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

ORDINATION TO THE MINISTRY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT

+ God entrusts the office of Word and Sacrament to those who have accepted the Church's call and sends them into this ministry.

PRESENTATION

I present for ordination to the ministry of Word and Sacrament Roxann Thompson, who has been prepared, examined, and approved for this ministry, and who has been called by the Church to this ministry through Lutheran Church of the Redeemer of Macon, Georgia.

Thanks be to God.

We sit.

ADDRESS AND QUESTIONS

All baptized Christians are called to share in Christ’s ministry of love and service in the world, to the glory of God and for the sake of the human family and the whole creation. According to apostolic usage you are now to be entrusted with the office of word and sacrament in the one holy catholic church by the laying on of hands and by prayer.

A reading from John:

Jesus said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

(John 20:21-23)

A reading from Matthew:

Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy

Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

A reading from First Corinthians:

I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. (1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

Before almighty God, to whom you must give account, and in the presence of this assembly, I ask:

Will you assume this office, believing that the church’s call is God’s call to the ministry of word and sacrament? | I will, and I ask God to help me.

The church in which you are to be ordained confesses that the holy scriptures are the word of God and are the norm of its faith and life. We accept, teach, and confess the Apostles’, the Nicene, and the Athanasian Creeds. We also acknowledge the Lutheran confessions as true witnesses and faithful expositions of the holy scriptures.

Will you therefore preach and teach in accordance with the holy scriptures and these creeds and confessions? | I will, and I ask God to help me.

Will you be diligent in your study of the holy scriptures and faithful in your use of the means of grace?

Will you pray for God’s people, nourish them with the word and sacraments, and lead them by your own example in faithful service and holy living? | I will, and I ask God to help me.

Will you give faithful witness in the world through word and deed, that God’s love may be known in all that you do? | I will, and I ask God to help me.

Almighty God, who has given you the will to do these things, graciously give you the strength and compassion to perform them. | Amen.

We sit or kneel PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation.

For the holy catholic church, that, filled with your love, it may hunger for truth and thirst after righteousness: God of mercy, | hear our prayer.

For all members of the church, that they may serve you in true and godly lives: God of mercy, | hear our prayer.

For Roxann, called to the ministry of word and sacrament in the church, that, sustained by your Holy Spirit, she may carry out this ministry with joy and a spirit of bold trust, serve your people, build up your church, and glorify your name: God of mercy, hear our prayer. For all ministers of word and sacrament; for all ministers of word and service; for Yehiel and Kevin, our bishops; that, together with all those responsible for the care and nurture of your people, they may support one another in serving Christ: God of mercy, | hear our prayer.

For the peace of the church, that our divisions may be overcome, so that, united in Christ, we may serve the world and bear witness to the good news: God of mercy, | hear our prayer.

For the mission of the church, that in faithful witness it may proclaim the gospel and in humble love serve all in need: God of mercy, | hear our prayer.

For the nations of the world and their leaders, that they may work for justice and promote the dignity and freedom of every person: God of mercy, |hear our prayer.

For the whole creation, that everything you have made may fulfill your purpose and that we may exercise care for your diverse gifts: God of mercy, | hear our prayer.

For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, the lonely, the forgotten, and all who suffer; for refugees, prisoners, and all who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected: God of mercy, | hear our prayer.

For the petitions known only to us and to you, we lift them silently to you: God of mercy, | hear our prayer.

For the glorious company of all the saints, those who have died in faith and those who live in certain hope, we praise you. That their witness may give us courage until the day of Jesus Christ: God of mercy, | hear our prayer.

Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. | Amen.

THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. |And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. | It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal, we bless you for your infinite love in Christ our Lord, in whom we have redemption and forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace. We thank you that by his death your Son overcame death, and that, raised by your mighty power, he gives us new life. We praise you that, having ascended into heaven, Christ pours out his gifts abundantly on the church, making some apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip your people for their work of ministry for building up the body of Christ.

The Ordinand kneels at the altar rail. The bishop lays both hands on the head of the Ordinand. Other ordained pastors and deacons who are participating in the laying on of hands place one hand on the Ordinand.

Following a time of silent prayer, the bishop continues, praying for the Ordinand.

Eternal God, through your Son, Jesus Christ, pour out your Holy Spirit upon Roxann and fill Roxann with the gifts of grace for the ministry of word and sacrament. Bless your servant’s proclamation of your word and administration of your sacraments, so that your church may be gathered for praise and strengthened for service. Make Roxann a faithful pastor, patient teacher, and wise counselor. Grant that in all things Roxann may serve without reproach, that your people may be renewed and your name be glorified in the church, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. | Amen.

GIVING OF A STOLE

Receive this stole as a sign of your work, and live in obedience to the Lord Jesus, serving his people and remembering his promise: “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

Called to Be

Jonathan Nelson

The Ordinand stands. Rostered Leaders exhort the newly ordained with the following passages of Scripture.

Hear the words of the apostles: Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called. (1 Timothy 6:11-12)

And again: Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you guardians, to feed the church of God, obtained with the blood of God’s own Son. (Acts 20:28)

And again: Tend the flock of God that is in your charge, not under compulsion but willingly, not for sordid gain but eagerly. Do not lord it over those in your charge but be examples to the flock. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will win the crown of glory that never fades away. (1 Peter 5:2-4

And again: Think of us in this way, as servants of Christ and stewards of God’s mysteries. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy. (1 Corinthians 4:1-2)

The Bishop continues: Roxann, care for God’s people, bear their burdens, and do not betray their confidence. So discipline yourself in life and teaching that you preserve the truth, giving no occasion for false security or illusory hope. Witness faithfully in word and deed to all people. Give and receive comfort as you serve within the church. And be of good courage, for God has called you, and your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

BLESSING

The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, make you complete in everything good so that you may do God’s will, working in you that which is pleasing in God’s sight; through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. | Amen.

We rise ACCLAMATION BY THE ASSEMBLY

Will you, assembled as the people of God and speaking for the whole church, receive Roxann as a messenger of Jesus Christ, sent by God to serve all people with the gospel of hope and salvation? Will you regard her as a servant of Christ? | We will, and we ask God to help us.

Will you pray for her, help and honor her for her work’s sake, and in all things strive to live together in the peace and unity of Christ? | We will, and we ask God to help us.

Let it be acclaimed that Roxann Thompson is a called and ordained minister of word and sacrament in the church of Christ. Roxann has Christ’s authority to preach the word of God and administer the sacraments, serving God’s people as together we bear God’s creative and redeeming love to all the world. | Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

PREFACE

It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, Holy Father, through the great shepherd of your flock, Christ our Lord; who after his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the Gospel and teach all nations, and promised to be with them always, even to the end of the age. And so, with patriarchs and prophets, with the apostles, and with all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER

All praise to you, glorious God of grace.

Throughout the ages you have blessed us with foremothers of the faith. With Sarah, we bless you for your gift of life. With Ruth, we praise you for family and food. With Miriam, we celebrate our escape from the foe. Remembering Deborah, we honor the words of your prophets. Remembering the woman at the well, we laud you for living water. Remembering Junia, we thank you for those who minister among your people. One with the daughter of Jairus, we wake to life in you.

With Mary, we magnify your name:

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

Remembering Martha and Mary, we join Jesus at this meal. Living, he healed the bleeding woman; dying, he

cared for his mother; risen, he sent Mary Magdalene in mission.

On the night before he died, he took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

With Mary, again we magnify your name:

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

Mighty God of mercy, as you heard the prayers of Hannah, so now hear us. Send your Spirit on this bread and wine, that sharing the body and blood of Christ we become his body in the world. Send your Spirit on this assembly, that like Phoebe, we serve one another with zeal.

Send your Spirit on the church, that like Anna, we tell others of your mercy. Send your Spirit into our hearts, that like Dorcas, we care for the poor and needy.

With Mary, once more we magnify your name:

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.

All praise to you, powerful God of peace. We adore you, our God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you who mother and feed and comfort us, today, tomorrow, and forever. | Amen.

BLESSING

May God bless you with a restless discomfort about easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may seek truth boldly and love deep within your heart.

May God bless you with holy anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may tirelessly work for justice, freedom, and peace among all people.
