Sermon December 21, 2014 Philippians 4: 4-7 Grace be with you and Peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen. Dear Congregation, I am reading the text for today’s sermon in Philippians 4: 4-7. Paul writes to one of his favorite church communities in Philippi, while being locked up in prison: 4
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Rejoice! This command may stir some resistance among some of us: Happiness, I don’t think you can command somebody to feel happiness! I remember when I was a student and one of my theology professors was preaching on the 4th of Advent. He stood high up on the chancel and with a strict face thundered “rejoice” with a loud voice down to us students. Even when he called us at least ten times during his sermon to “rejoice”, we, his listeners did not feel even a bit more joyful. I only got frustrated. You cannot command happiness as if pushing a button.
