LUTHERAN CHURCH OF THE REDEEMER Who are your saints? ATLANTA, GA

Who have been saints, that is, people of God, to you in your life?

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY NOVEMBER 5

In worship on All Saints Day, we name the members of Redeemer who have died over the past year. You will have the opportunity to name your loved ones in service and write their names on the chalkboard in the Sims atrium. As we say their names and give thanks for their lives, we trust in the promise of the resurrection of Jesus.

Connected via a bridge over Juniper St., Lutheran Towers has provided not just a roof over our 200+ seniors' heads but a warm and nurturing environment that fosters a sense of belonging and well-being for over fifty years. As we reflect on the past year and what we want to accomplish in the future, there is still much work to be done. Our seniors rely on your generosity for many daily services. Your donations have directly impacted our residents through ten different food programs, including the firstever free grocery store in our building, social and recreational activities, and transportation to help our residents access vital services and maintain their independence..

The Harvest Home Concert is Redeemer’s musical celebration of Thanksgiving, a quintessentially American holiday, a celebration that crosses all barriers. The diverse music of the concert is designed to appeal to a broad audience, including those who might not attend a church service. As a gift to the community, the concert is presented free of charge.

We celebrate HARVEST—deliverance from danger and the promise of a rich harvest—this year, singing specifically about those who labor to provide our food, with music and texts from John Dryden, Henry Purcell, and Woody Guthrie. We celebrate FAMILY—including blood relatives, welcomed strangers, nourishing friends, and those who live on in cherished memory—with

music from Jay Ungar's Ashokan Farewell to Elaine Hagenberg's There Was a Time with text by William Wordsworth. We sing pieces from the Shaker tradition, Simple Gifts, The Humble Heart, Gentle Words, and Give Good Gifts, inviting us to live peacefully.

We celebrate welcome and THANKSGIVING, from Come, Ye Thankful People, Come to For the Fruit of All Creation, and with new seasonal songs like the Autumn Reel and Hoe Down.

This 17th concert will be streamed live at Redeemer.org and HarvestHomeConcert.org and can be viewed after the concert. A dessert reception will follow the concert.

LCFM THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION A TIME TO SHARE

The Lutheran Community Food Ministry will host its annual “A Time to Share.” This event features a special Thanksgiving meal prepared by Chef Isaiah, with turkey and all the fixings. In addition, several

HOLIDAY SHARING For the 12th year, Redeemer members will have the opportunity to shop for the girls of Wellspring Living – children (ages 12 – 17) who have been sexually trafficked and who are on a path of restoration. On the back of each ornament on the Angel Tree in Sims Atrium will

stocking the boutique where the girls can “shop” for special items as rewards for scholastic achievement. Write the value on your gift cards and place them in the box by the tree. Thank you, Kathy Hill and family, for the creation of the ornaments.

We have resettled an unprecedented number of refugees this year. The weather is turning cold and purchasing a coat for every person in a family is a large expense. We are trying to gather coats for every client who has arrived this year. If you are able to donate even one coat, it would make a huge impact on a family of 9 or 11 who are looking at needing hundreds of dollars in warm clothing. Tags with names, gender, age and size can be found on our Hope Tree starting November 15. If you prefer to make a monetary donation to the Hope Tree Christmas fund, we will use the funds to purchase the winter coats needed.

Midtown Assistance Center (MAC) Annual Coat Drive will be held at Redeemer, beginning Sunday, December 3 through Sunday, December 31, 2023; we are looking for gently-used Men’s, Women’s, and Children’s Outerwear (coats/jackets/parkas/etc.) for the MAC Closet, to be offered to community members less-fortunate during cold winter weather. Donations can be placed in the collection barrels in Sim's Atrium.

FAITH FORMATION

Baptism at Redeemer Greetings! If you or someone you know is expecting a child or interested in baptism at Redeemer at any age, we would love to celebrate this special milestone with your family! We have several dates available. Here are some details: We are returning to our pre-pandemic practice of holding Baptism Festivals. This means certain Sundays are designated for baptisms, and there may be several families celebrating a baptism at the same time. Single-family baptisms were offered after the late service on most Sundays through the end of July. NOTE that all baptisms will take place on festival dates going forward. Please inquire for more details on how scheduling works and to get the Baptism registration form.

Upcoming Festival Dates December 31, 2023 at 10 am (New Year’s Eve Combined Worship) Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 11 am (during our Family Easter Vigil Service) Saturday, March 30, 2024 at 7pm (during the traditional Easter Vigil Service) May 26, 2024 (Memorial Day Weekend)

Why Baptism Festivals? Baptism is a sacrament celebrated in community. While we have done several baptisms after worship service for safety reasons during the pandemic, it is important that the congregation be part of the baptism liturgy as much as possible. Grouping up baptisms on certain days allows us to use a special liturgy focused on baptism and truly highlight it as a special event rather than it being a footnote to a service with a different focus. Also, it's fun! It's a great way to get to know other families, and your child will grow up with friends at Redeemer who share their baptism anniversary- a special bond that can follow them throughout life. In Christ, Deacon Mary Houck (she/her) Director of Children and Family Ministries mhouck@redeemer.org 770-778-7085

Surviving the Holidays While Grieving Helpful Tips

Celebrating the holidays after losing a loved one can be extremely difficult. Whether the loss was a parent, spouse, child, close relative, or dear friend, it may be hard to feel festive because the holidays often accentuate the void or absence of a loved one. Healing from loss takes time and grieving is different for everyone. In fact, there is no right or wrong way to grieve. The important thing is that you take care of yourself, take time to heal, do what makes you feel comfortable, and know that you’re not alone.

Holidays often accentuate the void or absence of a loved one There are several ways of coping with loss during the holidays. There may be one or two on the list (right) that may resonate with you. For more details on coping

techniques, read the article, Dealing with Grief During the Holidays: 28 Ways to Cope (Haragutchi, H., 2022, Oct. 26). The important thing to remember is, focus on the good memories and if possible, share your feelings with your children, other family members, friends, and your church community as appropriate. Sharing stories can help one get through the holidays, even if it evokes some tears. It’s all part of the healing process.

NEW MEMBERS

Welcome! Casey, Casey, and Murphy Jordan

Casey Jordan (left) grew up in Kennesaw and all around the metro Atlanta area, with a short stint in Florida with his grandma. He has worked in the Automotive, Electrical and is currently an Avionics technician at Peachtree Dekalb Airport. Casey enjoys spending quality time with my family and various hobbies, including gardening, a project car, and video gaming. Casey Jordan (right), (yes, they have the same name) grew up in Beavercreek Ohio, and was raised in the Lutheran Church at Peace Lutheran, where she always felt like the congregation accepted everyone, and that’s the same feeling she has felt here at Redeemer. She is new to Atlanta, though her parents and sister Jordan have been members at Redeemer for eight years now. Casey is a standup comedian and teaching artist at multiple theaters around town, including The Woodruff Arts Center down the street. She is also a new first-time mother to their little boy, Murphy Mark, who is somehow five months old now and was recently baptized at Redeemer last month. She loves spending time with family, taking Pilates at Barre 3 Buckhead, and thrifting and antiquing whenever she can! Sammi Watson

Sammi Watson moved from Montana to Atlanta at the beginning of August to be an intern at Georgia Tech's Grace House. She came to Redeemer since it is the nearest ELCA church to campus in terms of walking distance; however, she was welcomed with open arms and truly felt at home at Redeemer. Since the internship at Grace House is only one year, Sammi will be joining Redeemer as an Associate Member. Outside of ministry work, Sammi loves reading, music, and baking. Alexis Young

Alexis recently moved from Washington, DC to Atlanta to begin her Ph.D. in English at Emory. Her research focuses on narratives of addiction and mental health in contemporary American literature. She also works as a Consultant in Deloitte’s Government & Public Sector. Alexis is excited to find such a thriving Lutheran community in a new city! As part of her passion for learning, she teaches Confirmation classes on Sunday mornings.

NEW MEMBERS NEIL (GRANT) PFEIFER

Grant is a native of the Dakotas and was raised in the Wisconsin Synod Lutheran tradition. After graduating from the University of North Dakota, Grant completed graduate degrees in Music Theory/Composition and conducting at Sam Houston State University and has taught various music classes at public and private schools in Texas and Georgia. In 1999 he relocated to Atlanta. Grant finds it absolutely paramount to worship God through music and is completely ecstatic to finally find his musical paradise here at Redeemer! For the past seven years, Grant taught Jazz History and Introduction to Music at Georgia State University and currently resides as an adjunct professor of music. In his free time Grant enjoys researching poetry, music composition, music technology, photography, horticulture, and animal rescue. Grant and his partner Danny live in Stone Mountain with their three shelter dogs. Journee is the most recent rescue addition - she’s a shorthaired Border collie that is always up for a new adventure! Christine, Stephan and Matthew Roth

Christine, Stephan, and Matthew recently moved to Atlanta from Houston. Stephan was born in Pittsburgh and raised as a Lutheran. Christine was raised Catholic in Houston and was introduced to Lutheranism when she married Stephan. Matthew was born in Pittsburgh and baptized there as a Lutheran. When they moved to Atlanta from Houston, the Roth family was looking for a church that had a good children's program so that Matthew could meet lots of new friends. He has and is now involved in the church's children's choir. They all look forward to meeting lots of new people here in Atlanta. Joel Klaff

Joel Klaff has moved to Atlanta from Chicago with his spouse John Diekmann and dog family. As part of the ever-changing landscape of Atlanta's film industry, he hopes to have more time to participate in Redeemer's extensive reach and commitment to social justice ministry. He has created worship space in the construction site of the Lutheran School of Theology Chapel, giant community-made art installations at Wicker Park Lutheran Church; as well as moving symbols for Synod assembly in Chicago. He hopes to share his creative insights with new friends here. When not missing Lake Michigan, Joel and John explore outsider art environments in Georgia and search auctions to add to their art collection.
