THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 14:22-33
Matthew’s gospel typically portrays Jesus’ disciples as people of “little faith,” who fail despite their best intentions. In this story, Matthew shows how Jesus comes to the disciples when they are in trouble and sustains them in their time of fear and doubt.
Before the reading: The Holy Gospel according... | Glory to you, O Lord.
[Jesus] made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side [of the Sea of Galilee], while he dismissed the crowds.And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Confident that God receives our joys and concerns, let us offer our prayers for the church, those in need, and all of creation.
God of grace and faith, your faithfulness is never-ending, and your righteousness becomes ours through Christ Jesus. Send the church to proclaim the gospel both near and far, in church buildings and on street corners, in person and through digital means. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.
God of sky and sea, the plants, animals, mountains, and plains proclaim your glory. Prosper the work of ecologists as they teach us new ways to care for the environment. Bring relief to areas recovering from natural disasters. Hear us, O God.
Your mercy is great.
God of peace and justice, you call us to live as your beloved community throughout the world. Instill in local, regional, national, and global political and civic leaders a desire to work for the well-being of all people. Hear us, O God.

God of care and compassion, you bring assurance when we are afraid. Bring calm to any who are anxious or fearful. Bless the work of therapists, nurses, and other health care providers. Comfort all who grieve and soothe any who are sick especially... Hear us, O God.

God of wonder, you accompany us in both joys and sorrows. We pray for children and teachers preparing for a new school year. Make your presence known in our work and play, in lively conversation and in quiet rest. Hear us, O God.

God of new life, you send people to renew both church and society. We give you thanks for their lives of faithful service especially nursing pioneers Florence Nightingale and Clara Maass, whom the church remembers today as examples of following your call. Hear us, O God.

Into your hands, O God, we commend all for whom we pray, in the name of the one who reconciled all creation to himself, Jesus Christ our Savior.

Seated MISSION MOMENT
Our High School Youth went to Arecibo, Puerto Rico for their Mission Trip on June 1117 with YouthWorks and learned about the theme of “You Are Here”. We participated in multiple service projects (painting a school and helping out with a church’s summer camp). It was great to be there serving and getting to know people in the Arecibo community.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory.

Rejoicing Spirits is Back!
Join us in Rudisill Hall from 10:15-10:45 today to worship and rejoice together! Rejoicing Spirits is a worship service for people of all abilities. It’s a space where those with a variety of abilities are affirmed as participants and leaders, and where everyone comes away with a better appreciation of each other’s gifts and contributions. RS is meant to add to your worship experience, and can be combined with other worship services you are attending today.
COMMUNITY
Lutheran Community Food Ministry (LCFM) needs you! We’re in search of volunteers to pick up and help with the sorting of food from our partner agencies Tuesday and Thursday (occasionally Sunday) mornings at 8AM as well as sorting donated food that is delivered to us the 1st Thursday of the month. YOUTH
Youth Activity: TreeTop Quest (Save the Date)! Our Middle School Youth and High School Youth will head to TreeTop Quest in Dunwoody, GA on Saturday, August 19. Cost: $40 per person. If your youth can attend, please let Hillary know by Saturday, August 12. We can figure out carpooling too. A great opportunity for our youth as we zip into a new school year!
Our Middle School Parents will be meeting on Sunday, August 13 from 10:00 AM10:45 AM in the Library. A great opportunity to get together and catch up with parents after summer time! If you have any questions, please contact Karen Cramer.
Our Middle School and High School Youth are invited to come join us on Sunday, August 27 from 10:00 AM-10:45 AM as we celebrate the end of summer with some fun and bonding activities. Please join us in worship at either service today for a blessing of the backpacks! We welcome students of all ages along with teachers and other school staff to receive a
blessing as they embark on another school year. (Having a literal backpack with you is fun but not required; all worshippers can feel free to take a backpack blessing tag to students you know and love). All are welcome!
Sunday School Registration is Open!!
We are very excited about starting our ‘normalest’ year of SS yet since the pandemic! . Sunday school will be in-person, in classrooms this year. We kick things off with Sing and Play on August 27, and our first day in classrooms will be September 10. You can register at this link, scan the code, or speak to Deacon Mary with any questions. Celebrated performer Richard Elliott, Principal Tabernacle Organist at Temple Square, is a former assistant organist at the famous Wanamaker organ in Philadelphia. This rare Atlanta concert will benefit the Raymond Martin Organ Fund at Redeemer for the preservation of the church’s 59stop Létourneau pipe organ.
