Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost September 25, 2022 The Order of Worship at 9:00 am
We continue to monitor the latest information regarding the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
At this time, the wearing of face coverings onsite is optional and left to personal preference. Knowing that individuals and families have varying needs at this time, the balcony is reserved as a mask required area.
Please use the links available on the viewing page to let us know that you are worshiping with us, to submit any prayer requests, to let us know if you need help or are available to help a neighbor, and to continue giving financially to support the ongoing ministries of Redeemer.
As always, we pray that worship at Redeemer is a blessing for you, even as your participation blesses us, whether we are gathering in the name of Christ in person or online. As you are comfortable, we encourage you to sing the hymns and to sing or speak the congregational portions of the liturgy in bold type.

2 Standing HYMN 532 Gather Us In
Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, who is eager to forgive and who loves us beyond our days. | Amen. Dear friends, together let us acknowledge our failure to love this world as Jesus does.

God of mercy and forgiveness, we confess that sin still has a hold on us. We have harmed your good creation. We have failed to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with you. Turn us in a new Showdirection.usthe
path that leads to life. Be our refuge and strength on the journey, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and friend. Amen.
Beloved of God: your sins are forgiven ☩ and you are made whole. God points the way to new life in Christ, who meets us on the road. Journey now in God’s abiding love through the power of the Holy Spirit. | Amen

THE HOLY GOSPEL
Luke 16:19-31
Jesus tells a parable in which the poor one is “lifted up” and the rich one is “sent away empty.” Jesus makes it clear that this ethic of merciful reversal is not new but is as old as Moses and the prophets.
3 CONFESSION
The Holy Gospel according... Glory to you, O Lord.
[Jesus said:] “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’ He said, ‘Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house for I have five brothers that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’ Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’ He said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”
The Gospel of the Lord. | Praise to You, O Christ.

Gracious God, in your great love you richly provide for our needs. Make of these gifts a banquet of blessing, and make us ready to share with all in need; through Jesus Christ, who sets a table for all. | Amen
GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you. | And also with you.
Lift up your hearts! | We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. | It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Honor and glory be to you, Lord God of all the ages; we give you thanks for the joy of your creation, and praise for your liberating love.
Searching and yearning God, you enter the wilderness and sweep the dark corners of our world because you hate nothing that you have made and long to draw us back to your heart. In Christ Jesus, you came into the world to save sinners, to welcome them, and to eat with them. You spread a table in our sight and invite us to join you in glory.
In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
After supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Now send down your Holy Spirit, that your people who have strayed like lost sheep may dwell in the paths of righteousness and that these gifts of

who are lost; reach any who have strayed; pursue all who seem determined to wander further and further from your fold.
Heal your earth; where the fruitful land is waste and void, where the mountains are quaking, and the birds of the air have fled, bring hope, transformation, and deliverance.
Redeem your creation in the power of your Spirit and draw all things through the free gift of your Son into the glory of your presence, now and forever. | Amen.
Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray…
LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Today, we celebrate 40 years of Love that we call the Lutheran Community Food Ministry.
“In January 1982, Redeemer was asked by St Luke Episcopal Church if we would serve as an overflow warming location for neighbors without shelter whom they welcomed into their church as a refuge from unseasonably cold temperatures. Redeemer responded by opening up Zittrouer Hall, and members began serving our guests pimento cheese sandwiches and coffee. After all, it’s rude not to offer one’s guests something to eat.
Redeemer’s Social Ministry (now called Community Engagement) recommended a one-month pilot program for 50 guests each weekday, which the Congregation Council approved. Redeemer is now 500 months into the pilot program we now call the Lutheran Community Food Ministry. Please join us in the Sims Atrium to hear and see how our 40 years of love for Lutheran Community Food Ministry has evolved to being “beyond soup” and even pimento cheese sandwiches.
The Redeemer Concert Series concert scheduled for this afternoon WILL BE RESCHEDULED FOR A LATER DATE
Master Planning Update
The creative and imaginative part of our master planning process is well underway. All nine of our Subject Area Groups have met, and our members are dreaming BIG for Redeemer! It is exciting to see the common themes that weave through the various sessions-family life center, rooftop garden, alternative worship space, theater, outdoor classroom, covered outdoor concert space, music rooms, and even a coffee shop! These are only a few of the dreams that over two hundred of our members have discussed during this important visioning phase. Our consultants continue to lead us through discerning how we can best develop our campus to enhance our ministries, strengthen our financial future, and enlarge our impact in this community and region. Anyone in the congregation who was unable to attend one of the Subject Area Group Visioning Sessions is encouraged to attend our final gathering on October 2. This two-hour visioning session will be both in person and online, and the insights and results will be posted on a special page on our website.
