Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 23, Issue 11 | 5 May 2023
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome back to Term 2 after what I trust was a wonderful holiday.
Our senior students and their teachers at Bondi are very excited to regain all the classrooms in the Learning Centre. We are grateful to the teams from Midson and Stephen Edwards Constructions who have delivered an exceptional end product on time. The last stage of the project now involves the landscaping and external work, which will continue this term. We look forward to showing the completed project off to the community as soon as possible.
Tours and Activities that happened in the holidays include:
The Hamilton Island Art Retreat is a retreat which is open to students who are passionate about art. Hamilton Island is one of the most magnificent destinations in Australia and Reddam House students have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with Head of Art, Laurellen Symonds engaging in art workshops on the island. The students also had a private art lesson with the artist in residence in the studio space connected to the Hamilton Island Art Gallery. The students were involved in a range of workshops such as drawing, watercolour, sculptural and photographic. This was a fantastic opportunity to be able to create artworks in such a tropical and lush landscape. The students stayed in beautiful accommodation at the Reef View Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed the many pools, beach and
water sports. This was an unparalleled experience for our incredible artists. Please see the beautiful photos further in to this Newsletter.
If you would like a registration form to join us in 2024 email: laurellen.symonds@reddamhouse.com.au
The Art Department also ran a holiday workshop for Year 6 - Year 11 students who developed a range of new skills and techniques. They learnt how to knit and make a scarf. They made 3D sculptural forms in air dry clay and magic clay and used gouache painting for the first time to create beautiful works of fish and other sea creatures. Our 4th day was photographic techniques and the students now have a full kit of skills to take professional photos as they took shots both at Bondi Beach and in the studio setting. Join us next holidays to make great art, new skills and new friends.
The Modern and Ancient History Tour to Turkey, Germany and Italy led by our senior History teachers Ms Vince and Mr Dalglish was so successful that students are already enquiring about next year. See a diary of their tour later in this newsletter.
Mrs Pelosi and Ms Knight took the tour to the Northern Territory. They reflected that “It was a great experience for all and the students who were totally immersed in indigenous culture. A fantastic trip in every regard and a treat for all of us”. Video and photographs are reflective of this experience.

I would like to thank and congratulate all the students who attended ANZAC Day Ceremonies during the holiday and those involved in the school ANZAC assembly today. The Senior Judiciary and Junior Executive students represented the school at the Bondi Dawn Service while Weston Budd represented the school as the trumpeter at Mark Moran, Vaucluse, where the Mayor of Woollahra, Susan Wynne (whose daughter, Chloe, was in the HSC Class of 2019) was also present.
Fellisha Tjen of The Women's Empowerment Portfolio, together with the Charity Portfolio, and Year 11 and Year 10 volunteers went to a Days For Girls charity event where they participated in making reusable pads for disadvantaged girls and women overseas.
Fellisha explains "we learnt that in some communities, periods are often viewed with stigma and taboo and these girls have to stay inside the house for the duration of their monthly cycle. As a result they miss school days each month, making it a struggle to complete their education and thus an uncertain future.
We spilt up into groups to work on various stations such as stitching, cutting and sewing, to help make different parts of the reusable pads collectively. On completion, the items are directly shipped to the girls and women in need. It was an enriching and profound experience to directly be a part of this process, knowing that we are using our privilege for the good of others."
The Year 11 Drama students performed the plays, Basset by James Graham, and Heritage by Daffyd James on Wednesday evening. Directed by our Drama teachers Will Hodgson and Chris Montgomery respectively these two plays were thought provoking, hard hitting and exceptionally well performed by our students. The audiences at three sold out shows were treated to performances of the highest calibre. Congratulations to all involved.
Professional photographs will be available next week.
Also on Wednesday Dr. Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services (www.enhancedlearning.net) ran a study skills evening with Year 7 parents and students. The evening helped families assess what changes could be made to help students move towards achieving their personal best efficiently and effectively. Families examined the following areas: home study environment, the way they organise and manage their resources, how to work effectively at home and deal with distractions and how to manage the workload in high school. Families also have access to a video showing the steps to studying in high school: making study notes, learning the notes by testing yourself, and doing as much practice as possible. Parents are encouraged to review the slides and handout from the session with students and discuss the main areas identified where changes need to be made. Parents can also find extra study skills tips on the following website: http://studyskillstoptipsparents.com/.
Other student achievements include:
In Dance
Giselle Kotlyar (Year 10) travelled overseas to compete in the Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) Final in Tampa, Florida. YAGP is an international Ballet competition attended by the best of the best ballet dancers aged between 9 and 20 years old and from all over the world. To qualify, Giselle competed in the Australian heats involving hundreds of applicants and was the youngest of the 7 performers in her age group to be invited to the world finals. As a result of her performances in the Australian heats, she was also the only dancer to be offered scholarships from a range of Ballet schools across the globe. A phenomenal result!
While competing in the YAGP Final in Florida, Giselle also attended a number of auditions at full time Ballet schools in Europe and the U.S. As a result of these auditions she has now been accepted into the National Ballet School of Canada. Giselle will leave Australia in September to study full time Ballet while
also completing her academic education at the school until graduation. This is truly a remarkable achievement that has required years of dedication to her craft and we are so pleased to see Giselle's hard work, commitment and gifts as a young dancer rewarded in this way. We wish her the very best as she follows her dream and embarks on this exciting new stage of her artistic journey. We are so proud of you, Giselle!
Another talented young dancer, Mia Cohen (Year 7), has also achieved outstanding success over the last few weeks. During the holidays she competed in the Alana Haines Australasian Awards in Wellington, New Zealand. There were over 140 participants in her category and, much to her delight, Mia advanced to the Semi Finals against fierce competition. She was one of only 24 competitors to reach this level, however, her achievements did not end there. Now that the eisteddfod season has officially begun, Mia has already made a stellar start to her campaign, winning a slew of awards at I'd Rather Be Dancing (IRBD) and St George Eisteddfod. To top it all off, Mia has rounded out the last few weeks with the news that she has been accepted into the Intensive Summer Course at the Royal Ballet School in London. This is such incredible news and a very exciting time for Mia as she begins to make her dreams a reality, proving that hard work and determination can make it happen. Well done, Mia!
In Public Speaking
On Wednesday evening Emily Moore and Marlena Pasvolsky competed in the Plain English Speaking Competition, where they each presented an 8-minute speech and a three-minute impromptu speech. They were both outstanding and, while did not progress to the next round, were excellent representatives for our school.

On Tuesday night two Reddam teams consisting of 3 senior students in each team competed in the first round of the knock-out debating competition. The event is sponsored by Rose Bay Rotary Club, and the winner will represent them at the Model United Nations Competition in June.
The topic was "That the environment is our most important priority".
Both Reddam teams debated on the negative side, and while Jasmine Cohen, Sally Hanley and Robbie Kaplan were outstanding, unfortunately, they did not progress to the next round, losing to Kambala. However, our team of Jade Hastings, Asher Lingham and Hugo Bendeich were victorious against Cranbrook and will debate again next week against Kambala.
On the sports field:
The CDSSA Soccer Championships were held Tuesday at the Sydney Wanderers Fields at Blacktown. Our teams all did well but the highlight was our 16s Boys winning the Championships. They dominated the competition, going through undefeated with all of our boys playing extremely well. Congratulations to the four of our students on being selected in CDSSA Teams to play at the AICES Championships next week.
These players were:
Oliver Sacks Under 16 Boys
Liam McMaster Under 16 Boys
Riley Gamertsfelder Under 16 Boys
Meisha Holzman Under 15 Girls
1 - Under 16s Boys Champions
This week has been a wonderful week for Liam McMaster. On Tuesday, he was selected into the CDSSA
Under 16 Boys Soccer Team while playing goalkeeper for the Champion Reddam Team and only conceding one goal in six matches. Today he climbed one step higher being selected into the NSWCIS Under 15 Boys AFL Team. What a week!!! Congratulations Liam.
Also this week two of our best netballers travelled to Homebush to play in the AICES Under 15 Netball Championships, representing CDSSA. The competition was of a very high standard and the girls did extremely well finishing the day in equal first position but then slipping into the Runners Up position based on a count back. Congratulations to both Claudia Hasson and Tali Gor for their success.
Alexis Vella is to be congratulated on her First Prize with Honours at the Musical Theatre International Music Competition held by IYMC of the USA held in Broadway, Disney.
Next week the Whole School Ballet, Rêverie will be performed at NIDA. Tickets will be available to purchase through the link below

Have a wonderful weekend and week ahead, rug up there is a serious cold front on the way.

SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY
MySydney Entry & Scholarship Scheme
The E12 Early Offer and Scholarship Scheme is being discontinued as the University has introduced MySydney. Similarly to E12, MySydney provides entry at a reduced ATAR, yet a more generous scholarship of $8500 per year to students residing in a low socioeconomic area*. MySydney does not require a written application and eligible students will be identified automatically via UAC.
*Residing at the time of UAC application in an area listed in the bottom 25% of the Australian Bureau of Statistics Socio-Economic Index for Areas (SEIFA), Index of Education and Occupation.
Scholarships
The decision was made to discontinue the Sydney Scholars Award. With such a large volume of applications each year, far outweighing the number of Awards available to students, it was decided it was not fair for students to be spending so much time on their applications as such a crucial time of year.
In preparation for the change, the Chancellor’s Award was recently expanded to include students who received a 99.90 ATAR (previously awarded to 99.95 only). This cohort accounted for a large number of the Sydney Scholars Awards historically given to students. Preliminary 2023 offer and enrolment numbers also show that more students who achieved an ATAR of 95.00+ received the University’s new MySydney Scholarship, than those who received the Sydney Scholars Award.
There continues to be many academic merit scholarships available at a faculty level which we encourage students to apply for. The scholarships search tool will help students discover the range of scholarships that they may be eligible for.

Sydney Future Students The University of Sydney
UAC Applications are open
Applications for study at uni in 2024 are open. Students can apply for undergraduate study as well as the Schools Recommendation Scheme, the Educational Access Scheme and Equity Scholarships.
Although not all courses for 2024 are available now, students can choose any 2024 course to complete their application and come back later to review and change their preferences as courses are added. All semester 1, 2024 courses will be available by August.
Applications for international Year 12 students will open on Wednesday 19 April.
UAC PINs
Students received their UAC PIN this week. PIN emails were sent to the email address NESA or ACT BSSS has on file. Students should register a personal email address (rather than a school one) with NESA. They can do this by logging in to Students Online. This will mean they can still be contacted by UAC in December when they have left school.
How to apply for uni
Why apply through UAC?
We know that students are unsure about whether they should apply directly to an institution or through UAC, and to increase their chances many are doing both. Not all institutions accept direct applications from Year 12 students but it’s important for students considering a direct application to remember the following:
• A UAC application gives students five course preferences to choose; they don’t have to apply five times to five different institutions.
• Having a UAC application enables students to apply for Access and early entry schemes: EAS, SRS and Equity Scholarships.
• Having a UAC application as well as a direct application will give students more chance of securing an offer, so long as they don't enter the same preferences in both applications.

Our Law Admission Test (LAT) Plus Accelerator Program is designed to help students develop essential skills required to succeed in the LAT. The LAT Plus Accelerator equips students with the tools, advice, and confidence to succeed in the LAT.
The LAT Plus Accelerator is an interactive program which helps students develop strategies for deconstructing questions, solidify critical thinking skills, and hone persuasive writing abilities. We also provide strategies to succeed in the LAT and empower students to achieve their full potential.
We offer students an immersive experience where they will have the opportunity to ask live questions, partake in interactive exercises, complete practice papers, and receive live feedback during the Program. In addition, we offer further practice papers and complementary written feedback to help students continue refining their skills following the completion of the program. If interested see Ms Jones for more details.
