The past two years have shown us that Red Cross services are needed more than ever. Each day our dedicated team of volunteers delivers help and hope to families who have lost everything to a home fire. They also provide support and training to the heroes who serve in our military. They teach life-saving skills and emergency preparedness to children and adults. And these dedicated individuals train to be able to deploy and support our neighbors in need across the country, whether responding to the tragic flood in Kentucky or the relentless wildfires out west.

As the co-chairs of the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross on Long Island, we are proud to serve this organization that touches so many lives on the island and beyond.

Over the years, the American Red Cross has become one of NYCBS’s community pillar partners. We’ve proudly sponsored American Red Cross Events, including the 2019 NYC Gala, Women Who Lead Luncheon, the Home Fire, and Biomed: Fighting Cancer campaigns. And our staff participated in the Sound the Alarm campaign, which reduces home ﬁre deaths by providing ﬁre safety education and free smoke alarm installation in communities of need.

Sheriff Toulon has been recognized by countless distinguished organizations for his work in law enforcement. His accolades include awards from Corrections USA, Long Island NAACP, ASIS International, Touro Law Center, Times Beacon Record, City & State Magazine and NOBLE NY.

Dr. Errol D. Toulon, Jr.

In 2020, Sheriff Toulon created The Sheriff’s Transition and Reentry Team (START Resource Center). The program is a national model for rehabilitation and reentry, assisting with services including employment, mental health and addiction support, and housing to immediately help put them on a better path upon finishing their sentence. His work in the community goes beyond rehabilitation, hosting backpack giveaways, food drives, and cell phone collection drives to help victims of domestic violence.

Prior to serving as Suffolk County Sheriff, Toulon worked for 25 years with the New York City Department of Correction, culminating as the Deputy Commissioner of Operations. He received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Monroe College, a master’s degree in Business Administration and a doctorate in Educational Administration from Dowling College; an advanced certificate in Homeland Security Management from Long Island University, and he attended leadership courses at the JFK School of Government at Harvard University.

Sheriff Toulon launched the Sandy Hook Promise School Safety Initiative and since the program began more than 30,000 students, faculty, and community members have been taught to recognize signs of distress and how to report to a trusted adult. Simultaneously, he expanded correctional rehabilitation programming aimed to reduce recidivism and keep communities safe. He also launched the nation’s first jail-based Human Trafficking Initiative, which assesses inmates for signs of trafficking.

Humanitarian Honoree

Dr. Errol D. Toulon, Jr. is Suffolk County, New York’s 67th Sheriff and the County’s first African American to be elected to a non-judicial countywide office. Now in his second term as Suffolk’s highest-ranking law enforcement official, he continues to serve and protect the county’s 1.5 million residents through innovative programs to reduce crime and recidivism. Early in his first term, he reorganized departments into multi-disciplinary teams focused on corrections intelligence gathering, gang activity, and human trafficking.

He is an active member of several renowned organizations including the Major County Sheriffs of America where he was recently appointed to their Intelligence Commanders Committee. Toulon also serves on several boards including the Sandy Hook Promise Advisory Board, National Association of Counties, New York State Municipal Police Training Council, Stony Brook University Council and the Center for Criminal Justice Studies at Farmingdale State College.

Just as everyone was evacuated safely, they heard a loud bang: the backyard propane tank exploded. The entire house was consumed in flames. Antonina’s home also suffered severe damage, resulting in her family being displaced for over a year.

Antonina and Daniel’s quick and selfless actions saved the lives of her neighbors. For their bravery and concern for others, we award them this year’s Good Samaritan Heroes Award.

While evacuating the family, Antonina asked Daniel to rescue the neighbor’s dog, who was scared to come out of the house.

Antonina immediately rushed over to warn the family, screaming “Fire! Fire! Leave immediately!”

Antonina Barry is an aspiring oral and maxillofacial surgeon studying at Binghamton University. Daniel Shea is a pre-med student at Farmingdale State College who hopes to become an endocrinologist.

The high school sweethearts were preparing for Antonina’s sister’s graduation party when tragedy struck a neighbor ’s house burst into flames.

Previously, Anthony served on the Board of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Long Island Chapter where he was Chair of the Governance Committee. During the 2014 U.S. Open, Anthony received the City Parks Foundation’s Vitas Geruliatis Community Service Award from tennis legend, Billie Jean King.

Anthony is not simply the attorney to whom clients turn when they need representation he is their primary resource when making critical business and personal decisions.

During the last 39 years, his practice has steadily expanded to include a wide variety of businesses and business owners across every market sector. Anthony has represented and advised business clients in virtually every type of commercial transaction and dispute. He has enabled clients to realize results that other attorneys have deemed to be unattainable.

He previously served in the administration of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone as Chief of Staff and as Commissioner of the county’s Department of Labor, Licensing & Consumer Affairs. He was the lead county official in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, tasked with coordinating response and recovery. A staunch advocate of inclusive, sustainable economic development, he was instrumental in creating workforce opportunities for traditionally underserved individuals during the planning of the transformative Wyandanch Rising development, one of the seminal LEED ND projects.

Sammy currently serves in various volunteer leadership positions including chairman of the Long Island chapter of the US Green Building Council, Vice Chairman of the Suffolk County Planning Commission, chair of the LGBT Network, board member of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, board member of the Child Care Council of Suffolk, board member of the American Red Cross on Long Island, board member of EAC Long Island, trustee of Molloy College, chair of the Suffolk County Workforce Development Board and previously has served as a board member of the National Home Performance

A proven leader in promoting market adoption of energy efficiency, Sammy was the founding director of the Town of Babylon’s Long Island Green Homes Program, the first operationalized property assessed clean energy (PACE) program in the country.

Deborah Kerr has been volunteering with the Long Island Chapter of the American Red Cross for the past 22 years. Over those years she has served as a Mass Care associate, Disaster Action Team (DAT) responder, DAT Captain, Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) driver, Logistics volunteer, Shelter Manager, SOLER team associate and HAM Radio Operator. Deborah’s volunteer career history in Disaster Response includes the World Trade Center ground zero response, providing Mass Care as well as providing assistance during Hurricane Irene, Superstorm Sandy and Tropical Storm Henri as a Shelter Manager. She has logged countless hours of responses as a member of DAT, both day and night, providing assistance to those that needed our help. Most recently, Deborah has received recognition from Nassau Office of Emergency Management for her outstanding service during Tropical Storm Henri.

Since 2014, Home Fire Campaign volunteers have joined fire departments and community groups at Sound the Alarm events all over the U.S., visiting homes to provide free smoke alarms, conduct fire prevention and safety education, and help families make an escape plan.
