Greetings,
It’s hard to believe this is our 19th “Genetic Progress” production sale. It’s always a pleasure to invite both new and repeat customers to this event.
What a difference a year makes. Last year our bulls came off the toughest drought we have had in a hundred years. Mother nature stretched our management practices to the limits. Compare that to this year’s set of bulls blessed with an adequate amount of grass, this is the strongest and most complete set of bulls and heifers we have offered to date.
Our goals continue to revolve around customer profitability…even in tough years. This means we need:
• A great maternal factory…smaller cows weaning bigger calves. We continue to put downward pressure on mature cow size as resources in drought years can be challenging if cows are too big.
• A live calf – the number #1 profit contributor
• Calves excel at growth – acceptable birth weight combined with a big growth curve
• Calves must be efficient – convert resources to red meat for heavy weaning weights
• Carcasses need to be industry acceptable (guarantees buyer competition for your calves) – our goal is to provide genetics that are improving faster than the industry average
Using these goals to drive genetic improvement decisions is our belief in keeping all customers on a progressive path forward. We continue to use embryo transplant, artificial insemination and natural service sires to accomplish these goals. In fact, keep an eye on the calves sired by the Woodhill Merit bull…they are not only driving genetic improvement, but they are leading the way in carcass improvement categories.
For those of you using EPDs to drive your decisions, which we strongly recommend, we continue to invest in DNA testing for every animal in our sale. This is a way to validate and improve accuracy of the existing EPDs for every animal and to confirm animals’ parentages. Without doing this, all ET flushmates would have the same EPDs.
We do everything we can to make our cattle work for you. We pay strict attention to all the convenience traits that make the cattle business easier to include disposition, structural soundness, feet and udder quality. We are extremely proud of the fact that our cattle have gone into different environments across the U.S. and performed very effectively.
As always, in the event something does happen, we guarantee our animals through the first breeding season (from turnout to the time they have completed breeding).
Again, thank you for your confidence and your continued support of our program. Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
Sincerely,
Rob, Bill and Noah ArnoldSALE CRANVIEW GELBVIEH Genetic Progress

GENOMIC ENHANCED EPDS
THE MAJOR BENEFITS OF GE EPDS ARE: risk reduction through improved accuracies, value of time to assess breeding stock at a younger age, increased rate of genetic progress, and getting data on economically important traits which are expensive or difficult to measure. Many of the bulls and females selling have GE EPDs and it is denoted to the right of the lot number using this symbol:
SALE BOOK EPD EXPLANATIONS
CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.
BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
MILK (MILK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.
TOTAL MATERNAL (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + 1⁄2 WW EPD.
CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic predisposition to calve unassisted as heifers.
YIELD GRADE (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.
RIBEYE AREA (CREA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable. MARBLING (MARB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
$COW: Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow.
FEEDER PROFIT INDEX (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.
EFFICIENCY PROFIT INDEX (EPI): Efficiency profit index (EPI): An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less.

BIRTH WEIGHT IN EMBRYO TRANSPLANT (ET) BULLS SELLING
The bulls selling as a result of ET all have Genomic EPDs listed in the sale book to increase the accuracy. ET calves do not have ratios for birth and performance weights as they are raised by a recipient cow that will not give you the true accuracy for birth and performance as will the genetics. The birth weight in ET calves is completely irrelevant and has no indication as to the expected birth weights of their calves. Please use the EPDs for calving ease and birth weight to help with the selection of the bulls in the sale offering.

Calving and performance traits here! Definitely a great fit on young cows and small cows but could also be used on some heifers too. Have to appreciate the depth of body this calf displays at 9 months of age which he gets from his big broody
S A V Resource momma. She is pictured here as an open female prior to our 2017 sale. If you are looking to add some volume to your cattle, this calf will help. Extremely easy going kind of calf.

These two bulls will definitely attract attention from many cattlemen on sale day. If you are trying to find an Angus bull with performance without giving away the farm, here you go! They’ve got just enough Continental Blood (Gelbvieh) to give you that little extra punch you are looking for, which is usually never found in a purebred Angus. These calves get their volume from their S A V Resource mother pictured next to Lot 1.

I bought these embryos from JJ Boehler in Nebraska based solely on my confidence in the dam, as we have owned a few other Julia females. As expected, they did not disappoint me. Once you see these calves, they won’t disappoint you either. They are moderate, they are thick and they are beginning to show that pop in the rear quarter. Sired by EGL Game Changer D136, sire of the 2019 AGF Scale and Rail steers with high individual in average daily gain and high individual carcass. They rank in the top 10% for growth and maternal EPDs, so if you are thinking about retaining some of your own females, these bulls could help; otherwise knowing that your calves will excel when they hit the ground might be all you are looking for.

Possible heifer bulls! If you want to make some serious change on your next set of heifer calves or if you are just looking to increase carcass merit on a set of feeders, look no further. These Merit calves are at the top of the ladder when it comes to marbling, all while being true heifer bulls with adequate performance. The docility is incredibly good with this lineage of cattle. Check out the heifer mates if you are looking to add some breeding pieces to your program. Their sire scored a 10 for Tenderness and DNA results will be available prior to sale day on these 3 calves.

A more moderate kind of bull but very sound. His grand sire was both a National Champion bull in the U.S. and in Canada. His mom worked her way to a Reserve Division winner when we had her in Denver too. This calf is sired by our Lot 1 bull from our 2021 sale that sold to our good customers, the Aaseths. If you are wondering where all the capacity comes from in this calf, it comes from the grand dam (CRAN D642) who is the same dam to K53ET and K60ET in the bull offering and K160ET and K163ET in the heifer offering. She is the biggest-barreled cow we own and comes by it naturally; she seems to pass that along. Scurs will keep the seedstock producers away from this bull but should be lots of commercial interest on a deep-sided calf like this.

Consider the pounds of calf on display with the two calves (Lot 17 and 28) this cow raised on her own and brought to the pen. A313 has made a huge impact in our program and we’ve sold a number of embryos to other breeders. A313 raised two bull calves finding their way to the top of our bull pen with an 18 EPD on Milk (50th percentile) and then bred back yet. Goes to show how productive and efficient these Balancer females are and speaks to why popularity continues to grow. Maternal, Carcass and Performance!

I really could write the same foot note for a many of these calves. If anything, reading these notes should give you confidence that the focus on our program has been performance and carcass which may sound boring to some, but if I can equate it to grain farming…yield and quality is the name of the game. This calf excels at every carcass trait and is in the top 3% for WW and 5% for YW. Top 10% on 4 carcass traits!

Great heifer would be an understatement! This heifer is flat out good on paper and on the hoof. We bought a flush on the Betty Grable cow and decided to flush her this way… and it did not disappoint us.173K is in the top 25% for CED and BW while being in the top 40% for growth, top 10% for marbling and top 20% for Feeder Profit Index! This would be an outstanding foundation heifer to start a herd with or a great opportunity for a Junior project. Will retain the right to flush this heifer at my expense.

If you are in the market for good red heifers…look no further! The dam (Zula C557) stems from the great Zula Z133 cow that has had a huge impact in our herd and has placed many bulls and females in other herds. This cow was the dam to the high-selling Powerbuilt female in our 2022 sale, selling to Jason and Sadie Morris in Mississippi. Casey Martin purchased an Overdrive heifer out of this dam in 2019 that was Grand Champion in Louisville. You should have a lot of confidence in purchasing these heifers...like their mother, they will make GREAT cows. These heifers would be very competitive on the big stage too. Retaining the right to a flush on these heifers at my expense.

It’s hard to find heifers with the volume these two heifers exhibit. If you are wondering where they get it from...the dam has exactly the same phenotype. It’s easy to take females like this and mate with PB Gelbvieh bulls to gain that capacity in a breed up program... plus you get the benefit of the carcass traits to work with as well. Their donor dam, D642 was retained in our program as a feature donor that has produced many of the top bulls and heifers through our production sales through the years. This cow family ranks near the top in production here at Cranview Gelbvieh.

Almost off the charts for performance and an extremely attractive carcass profile as well. This cow family needs no introduction to the Gelbvieh breed, the Miss Julia 2417J family has had as much influence in progress of the breed as any cow in history.
