FEBRUARY 2012 TESCO THE SWAN CENTRE YARDLEY, BIRMINGHAM

Brief Public art installation to be hung on a wall 8m x 3m inside the new Tesco at the Swan Centre, Yardley, Birmingham. Designs to be created in conjunction with local primary school.

Theme • Swans • Bright colours • Transformation Considerations Could not protrude more than 5cm from the wall but would ideally like some element of depth / 3D to be included.

Installation Preview

Budget included • School workshop x 1/2 day • Design time • Fabrication costs (4 x 1m2 acrylic artwork panels, 5 x acrylic interpretation plaques) • Installation Additional extras • 15 x A4 acrylic artwork reproduction for participants and stakeholders • Production of 1 x giant unveiling curtain for launch day

School workshop delivered - including ideas development with children and compositions created 5. Children’s designs transformed into 4 x draft artworks 6. Artworks amended and further drafts produced 7. Artworks signed off 8. Site vists and discussions with architect & site manager

9. Artwork prepped for fabricators - consideration for material constraints 10. Artwork sent to fabricators & draft plaque designs produced 11. Artwork samples produced by fabricators & plaque designs signed off 12. Liaise with fabricators to complete production of artworks and plaques 13. Artworks installed 14. Store launch with unveiling including school and stakeholders Timescale: December 2011 - February 2012

Jan Moss, head teacher at Yardley Primary School, said:

“The children were very excited to

produce a piece of art that will on show for all to see in the new Swan Centre. It was also really interesting for the children to work closely with real life artists at We Are Frilly to learn how to turn a simple drawing into a piece of public art.”

Jonathan Simpson, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, who commission the artwork, said: “This

scheme is hugely important to Yardley and we wanted to mark the occasion with a piece of artwork that would help demonstrate how far the Swan Centre has come and the huge transformation that has taken place here.”
