The recruitment businesses that succeed in the long-term are those that have the most capable, resourceful and creative people. So, tonight is not just about individuals but about the businesses that have invested in them. As an industry we need to do more to develop our human capital, the people who win business, build relationships and assist individuals in finding their dream job.

2010 has been another challenging year for the industry, both our Report on Jobs and JobsOutlook continue to highlight the fragility of the UK labour market, but the fact that we are here continuing to recognise and celebrate excellence means that our industry continues to improve.

Congratulations to everyone who entered. The standard of entries was exceptional. For those who were shortlisted, bask in the glory of your achievements, the bar was set high.

The number of entries exceeded expectations and our judges had a difficult time shortlisting and then choosing the winners. I thank our judges for investing their valuable time.

Individual Winners Best Newcomer Award Winner: Nina Wong, Advanced Resource Managers Nina was seeking a new challenge and an opportunity to have an impact on individuals when she decided to pursue a career in recruitment. She joined the Automotive Engineering team at ARM in October 2009 in the midst of the recession when many companies had imposed recruitment freezes. Nina focused on the longterm vision and persevered despite the economic gloom. She is one of three in a team who have generated turnover of £0.5million this year. The Judges recognised Nina’s innovative ideas and fresh approach to recruiting while building strong relationships with clients based on trust.

Best Client And Candidate Experience Of The Year Winner: David Tait, Keillar Resourcing The Judges were impressed by David’s step-by-step approach to moving multiple candidates from the UK to Dubai and Qatar and in attracting and moving a sales manager from a competitor company in Hong Kong to Bahrain for the largest independent financial advisor in the Middle East. David overcome many of the challenges associated with this assignment, such as cultural differences, managing client and candidate expectations, relocation issues for candidates and coordinating interviews across three time zones. David’s level of genuine interest to both company and the candidates has resulted in some exceptional matches.

Best Contribution To The Community Winner: Louise Hewett, Louise Hewett Recruitment The Judges were impressed by Louise’s commitment to use her position as a leading businesswoman in Worcestershire to make a difference to the lives of people in the county. She created the ‘Walk like a Warrior’ project, which aims to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour by involving young people aged 12-14 years who are at risk of making negative life choices, by involving them in sport. To date some 150 young people from the most challenging backgrounds have benefited and the project’s future is now secure into its 5th year.

Resourcing Manager Of The Year Winner: Laura Perkins, Meridian Business Support Laura joined Meridian Business Support in August 2007 and since joining them she has executed innovative candidate attraction strategies, introduced a PSL of Rec2Rec’s and reduced the department’s reliance on agencies dramatically resulting in a major business saving. The judges were impressed that Laura sources candidates ethically and proactively and has implemented a robust internal recruitment selection process by working in partnership with the hiring managers. This, amongst other achievements, has contributed significantly to the reduction of staff turnover and has improved staff retention from 46% to 77%. With an increased level of calibre joining the business and an improved retention rate, Laura has ultimately enhanced the productivity of her workforce and had a direct impact on the company’s revenue and profit.

Business Leader Of The Year Award Winner: Cathy McCorry, Grafton Employment Group From October 2008 till the end of 2009, Grafton witnessed the most difficult trading period. With the market becoming characterised by recruitment freezes and redundancies, they experienced a huge reduction in business. Through driving the necessary changes and improvements in the business, Cathy improved profitability from a loss of £350,000 in 2008/9 to a profit of £1.875m in 2009/10. The Judges were impressed by Cathy’s personal and inclusive management style and her knowledge of the company from the ground up.

Interim Recruiter Of The Year 2009 Winner: Dafydd Wright, RSA Interims By getting to know each Interim Manager as an individual - by knowing them personally and professionally - Dafydd has been able to ensure that he introduces the right person into the vacant project, even when he is delivering under extreme circumstances and with impossible deadlines. Despite the challenging times the Interim management sector has faced over the last 12 months, Dafydd has maintained impressive levels of new and repeat business. The Judges were impressed by Dafydd’s commitment to providing clients and Interims with a personal service rather than simply knowing who, where and how to use a database.

Permanent Consultant Of The Year Award Winner: Mike Butler, Staffline Group In the ten years Mike has worked for Staffline, he has been the company’s highest permanent revenue generator for eight consecutive years. The Judges recognised Mike’s many achievements of the last year, which include making 89 placements, recruiting 60 Manufacturing Managers to deliver a UK restructuring for Nestle UK and executing a Research & Development Recruitment Campaign for 60 technical and management staff into Reckitt Benckiser, Hull. The Judges were particularly impressed by Mike’s outstanding record of client retention.

Temporary Consultant Of The Year Award Winner: Simon Gardiner, Matchtech Group Simon has been become one of Matchtech’s biggest billers in just three years, receiving various internal awards and promotions. He specialises in the recruitment of transportation design specialists dealing with clients from the both the private and public sectors as well as Central Government Agencies. Despite dealing with a very niche industry where placement volume is extremely low, Simon has placed 52 contractors in the past 12 months. The Judges recognised Simon’s excellent care and diligence as resulting in high contractor retention.

Executive Recruiter Of The Year Winner: Simon Bell, Michael Page International The winning entrant in this category has made 30 permanent placements at the Executive Search candidate level this year alone, with a hit rate of 90% of roles filled.

Simon puts this success down to ‘sheer graft’. He is often on the road from 5am and covers over 40,000 miles every year. The fact that Simon started the Regional Executive Search operation from scratch and has grown it to a business which bills over £2m of revenue a year really impressed the Judges. He is described by colleagues as highly personable while clients see him as determined and focused. This entry was also supported by strong testimonials.

Business Manager Of The Year Award Winner: Catriona Drysdale, FreshMinds Talent Catriona believes that the best way to motivate a team to exceed targets is to have a clear strategy, a simple purpose and a strong team culture that everyone understands and believes in. It is this belief that resulted in her team beating all previous ‘best ever’ records since the business began six years ago. In an industry with average fill rates of 30-50%, Catriona caught the Judges’ attention as her team fills a staggering 85% of its clients’ mandates. Furthermore, 20% of candidates are extended and placed onto additional projects with the same clients and 75% of projects are for repeat clients.

Company Winners Best People Development Business Award Winner: Abacus Professional Recruitment Abacus is an independent recruitment agency based in Belfast, who has recently started to place people in London, Dublin and Middle East. Abacus provides staff in response to a scope of contingency recruitment in various commercial markets, alongside high-volume exclusive contracts with Top 100/PLC firms or the delivery of public sector tenders and contracts. Abacus take a disciplined approach to people development, believing that staff lead the company in achieving the competitive advantage. In the past 12 recessionary months, Abacus has invested over £30k in training at team and at individual level.

Best Small Recruitment Company To Work For Winner: FreshMinds Talent FreshMinds understands that everyone’s development needs are different, so they allocate a minimum £500 Personal Training Budget. Already this year, they have spent 81% more than the whole of 2009 on learning and development. New starters receive a structured three-month induction, where people work with their Line Manager, Mentor and two Buddies to get advice and address their individual needs. Regardless of seniority, each staff member is given ownership of specific projects and small groups meet with the MD, CEO or both and discuss topical, strategic issues. FreshMinds even has a HR Manager devoted to employee engagement.

Best Medium Recruitment Company To Work For Winner: SRG SRG has grown to become the largest and most respected provider of contract scientific laboratory staff within the UK. Despite the recession in 2009, SRG increased its year on year sales revenue by 9%, winning and securing new business in a competitive sector.

SRG’s focus on people development has led to a dramatic decrease in staff turnover from 45% in 2009 to 25% in 2010 and an increase in productivity. SRG pays upper-quartile market rates to all staff, including commission systems that are linked to both company and personal financial performance.

Best Large Recruitment Company To Work For Winner: Tate Tate has evolved to a national business of 27 branches through service excellence, passion and a strong belief in their vision, ‘To be the best, everywhere, all the time’. New starters work through a blended learning induction programme and receive an average of 15 days of training in their first 12 months. Staff are supported in non-work related training and qualifications, for example CPP or CIPD. Tate has developed a ‘Reward and Recognition’ scheme which rewards contribution both individually and as part of a team.

Rewards vary from lunch in a top London restaurant to a cash reward of £2,000.

Winners The Eileen Simpson Award For Outstanding Contribution Winner: Les Berridge, Matchtech Group Les has been in recruitment for 28 years and holds the Diploma in Recruitment Practice. For the last 18 years, Les has been with Matchtech Group PLC, during which time they have grown by 20% per annum. Les is the highest individual performer in Matchtech’s IT Division, bringing in more than twice the revenue of the next highest consultant. During the worst part of the current recession, he equalled his own record for the most contract placements. The Judges were impressed by his mentoring of new recruits and the popular jobs clinic he runs in his local community centre on Saturday mornings, where he offers his time for free.

Lifetime Achievement Award Winner: Peter Searle, Adecco Group In presenting this lifetime achievement award the judges wanted to celebrate the vital role that active members can play in being champions for the recruitment industry.

Peter is one such vital member.

Peter has spent his whole career in the recruitment and staffing profession and has combined this with being one of the industry’s strongest advocates for raising standards and lobbying government from the collectives perspective.

Peter fits his commitment to advancing the Recruitment profession around another lifelong passion, Chelsea football club. Like his heroes it looks like Peter’s dedication and hard work have made him top of the League this year. A worthy champion.

Recruiter Of The Year – Judges’ Choice Winner: David Tait, Keillar Resourcing This year David was a clear winner in the Best Client and Candidate Experience category, and is also a worthy winner of this evening’s Judge’s choice award, Recruiter of the Year. What impressed the judges most about David’s entry was his genuine interest in both the client company and his candidates. This interest resulted in some exceptional matches. He is truly an example of going the extra mile. The judges wanted to congratulate David who they believe will be a future ambassador, not just for his company but for the industry as a whole.
