to our Third Annual Red-Land Cattle Company Bull and Female Sale.
We are so grateful to be on year three of the Red-Land sale! The sale is growing; our operations are growing; our blessings are growing. Thank YOU for helping us achieve that growth! We demand that our cattle produce beef efficiently and repeatedly under the same conditions our customers have. We know that by demanding more from our cattle, they will go home with you and go to work. We believe you will find animals offered in this sale that will meet your needs. Red cattle are exploding in popularity, and this offering can really help your herd by producing cattle that are in demand. Are you looking for heat tolerance, hybrid vigor, and performance? Maybe your program is more focused on carcass merit and producing high value feeder cattle that will fit today’s industry. We think these Red Brangus and Red Angus cattle can help you meet those goals or maybe you want to shoot the middle and capture some of all these value added qualities with an Ultrared. Regardless of the goals you have for your program, we are humbled by your choice to look at our genetics and we take that responsibility very seriously. If we can help you in any way feel free to let us know.
Sincerely,
Woodland Ag is a commercial and registered Red Angus cattle operation that came into being when owners Chris and Jason Sylte purchased Woodland Farms on the banks of the Red River in 2013 and hired Manager John Purviance to oversee daily operations of the ranch. John is a 1992 graduate of Texas A&M University and has extensive experience ranching on cow/calf, yearling, and commercial feedlot operations. From his previous experience, John had come to love the Red Angus female so it was a perfect fit that the ranch came stocked with a resident 500 head commercial Red Angus cow herd, this was the beginning of and the genetic base for the 1500 head commercial herd that we still operate here on three ranches in Red River County Texas.
This commercial herd and its productivity drives every decision we make as seedstock producers. We are our own largest customer, we breed, raise, and develop bulls and females that are functional and work in our area to produce high quality beef animals that function well in our high rainfall and extreme heat environment. 7 years ago we purchased 5 registered Red Angus heifers and 3 registered Red Angus cows from Jones ranch in Telephone, Texas. Later that year, at the RA Brown Ranch dispersal we purchased 28 more registered Red Angus cows. Through IVF embryo transfer technology these 34 females became the genetic base of registered herd. With nearly 500 registered females now in production, we have the opportunity to share these genetics with you, the general public. We believe the Red Angus female is the best vehicle to get us to our end goal and this is only enhanced by bringing in some Red Brangus genetics that add heat tolerance and growth, just a touch of ear yet without sacrificing carcass merit or maternal traits. We are excited about our partnership with RedBud Farms and the High Quality Hybrid Vigor that this partnership is producing. Bulls and females that function well in our environment with minimal inputs and produce outstanding carcasses are the ultimate goal of this operation and we hope that it is evident when you see the cattle we are producing.
Red Bud Farms is a family operation located in Southwest Arkansas, owned by Josh and Jennifer Walker. Josh’s dream to become a professional rancher began in 1992 with the purchase of two commercial Brangus females. By the time he graduated high school, his herd had grown to 15 head. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from the University of Arkansas, then continued his education at Colorado State University, receiving a Master’s and Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences. Continuously focusing on genetics and performance, by 2016, Red Bud Farms had grown to over 400 registered females. Our cattle are required to produce in fescue-based pastures and to do so efficiently year after year.
Red Brangus cattle provide our customers with genetics that are functional and productive in a hot and humid fescue environment. To improve our herd and increase our footprint in the beef industry, Red Bud Farms relies on the Ultra program offered by the International Brangus Breeders Association to bring some of the best Angus and Red Angus genetics in the country into our Red Brangus herd. Our partnership with Woodland Ag will add carcass value into our Red Brangus cattle, enhancing their value to commercial cattlemen in the Southern United States and throughout the fescue belt.
Red-Land Cattle is a product driven genetic partnership between Woodland Ag and Red Bud Farms. With the combined genetics from these two operations from Red River County, Texas, and Sevier County, Arkansas, we are producing high quality Red Bulls and Females that fit in this extreme heat and high rainfall environment, and we believe they will fit well in your environment as well. If you are from Eastern Oklahoma, all the way down to the Texas coast and east to Florida, these cattle have already proven they can make it in 100 degree temps and with 60 inches of rain per year falling on their backs. If you are from North or West of these lines, these cattle that originated in our high-humidity, high-rainfall area, will thrive when you get them home like never before.
We hope and believe that you will find the animals offered to you in this sale to be functional and value producing wherever you take them. Maybe you need the extra ear and heat tolerance that the Red Brangus offers, maybe you already have enough Brahman influence in your cow herd and a Red Angus bull will fill your needs, knocking off some of the extra leather in your calf crop and enhancing the carcass merit as our industry demands, or maybe the UltraRed is the best of both worlds that you are looking for. Whatever your situation we are glad that you are considering us as a source for your seedstock genetics. We see the influence of Red-hided cattle only growing in the future, especially across the south. We are so thankful for your consideration of Red-Land Cattle as part of your operation. To serve you in this way and to have a chance to gain your trust is truly a blessing from above.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW) predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of Red Angus’ Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD.
CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM) predicts the probability of a given animal’s daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Replacement heifers should be able to calve on their own.
12TH RIB FAT THICKNESS (FAT) predicts differences for carcass fat depth over the 12th rib, as expressed in inches. Increases in fat thickness has a detrimental effect on Yield Grade.
MILK EPD (MILK) predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal’s daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves.
RIB EYE AREA (REA) predicts differences of carcass Rib Eye Area between the 12th and 13th rib. Increased Rib Eye Area has a beneficial effect on Yield Grade which also includes Carcass Weight and Fat Thickness.
STAYABILITY (STAY) predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters remaining productive until at least six years of age. Why six? That’s how long it takes a female to breakeven given all the expenses of development.
YEARLING WEIGHT (YW) predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
WEANING WEIGHT (WW) predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.
U.S. INTRAMUSCULAR FAT (IMF) is reported in decimal terms representing percentage of intramuscular fat, which is highly correlated with USDA marbling score, a major determinant of USDA quality grade. As with all EPDs, the absolute value has no inherent relevance, but is used to compare one sire to another.
TOTAL MATERNAL (TM) is reported in pounds as a reflection of a sire’s daughters milking ability and growth potential of their calves when compared to other sire’s daughters. It is equal to the Milk EPD plus one half of the WW
SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE (SC) is reported in centimeters and predicts the difference in yearling scrotal circumference of a bull’s male progeny compared to sons of other sires.
COW WEIGHT (COW WT), or Mature Cow Weight (MCW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature cow weight of a sire’s daughters when compared to daughters of other sires.
TERMINAL INDEX (TI) is a bioeconomic index which considers six growth and carcass-related traits, each trait weighted according to its heritability and economic importance in a feedlot situation with carcasses valued by weight, yield, and quality grade. The value is expressed in standard deviation terms, which can be difficult to comprehend. IBBA advises breeders to evaluate the percentile rank rather than the actual index value.
FERTILITY INDEX (FI) is a bioeconomic index which considers six traits, each trait weighted according to its heritability and economic importance in a cow-calf enterprise. The value is expressed in standard deviation terms, which can be difficult to comprehend. IBBA advises breeders to evaluate the percentile rank rather than the actual index value.
BREED BACK (BB) is the probability that a cow will have a second calf at 3 years old given she had a calf as a 2 year old.
NUMBER OF CALVES (NC) measures the number of calves an animal has to 7 ½ years of age.
CARCASS WEIGHT (CW) predicts differences in hot carcass weight and is expressed in pounds. Because Red Angus’ CW EPD is a multi-trait model which includes birth, weaning and yearling weight data, the prediction is not subject to culling bias. Thus, it provides a more reliable EPD as compared to only using actual carcass weights. This computation allows for the use of weights taken on ~57,000 animals per year as compared to only ~1,500 animals per year with actual carcass weight observations. Increased Carcass Weight tends to detrimentally affect Yield Grade; the calculation of which also includes Rib Eye Area and Fat Thickness.
CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED) predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of 2-year-old heifers. Producers want live calves born unassisted. Selecting on actual birth weight is flawed; it is influenced by non-genetic factors such as nutrition and weather (ambient temperature). While BW EPD removes these non-genetic fators, Red Angus CED has the best predictor of calving ease. The CED EPD includes variation in BW plus other influential genetic factors such as gestation length, calf shape, etc.
HEIFER PREGNANCY (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. While puberty is a prerequisite, many factors influence pregnancy rate. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers a tool which selects for what is economically relevant to ranchers — pregnant heifers.
MARBLING SCORE (MARB) predicts differences for carcass marbling score as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades.
MAINTENANCE ENERGY (ME) predicts differences in daughters’ maintenance energy requirements and is expressed in Mcal/Month. Recognizing that 70% of cowherd feed costs are burned up in maintaining weight and condition, Red Angus’ ME EPD allows for the selection of bulls whose daughters will require less feed; thus, reducing cowherd expenses. Include selection pressure for ME EPD to ensure feed costs don’t get out of line when selection is made for greater performance and production.
YIELD GRADE (YG) predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units. YG EPD is calculated using the genetic predictions of CW, REA and FAT EPDs. The reliability of Red Angus’ YG EPD is enhanced by using both ultrasound and actual carcass data in the calculation of REA and FAT EPDs.
Producers selecting bulls to develop profitable replacement females and maximize the value of non-replacement marketed progeny should incorporate the HERDBUILDER INDEX into their selection decisions. The HerdBuilder Index is built using the following scenario:
• Red Angus bulls mated to cows and heifers
• Replacement heifers retained from within the herd
• All remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid
Given that replacement heifers are retained, significant influence is placed on the obvious maternal ERTs of Stayability, Heifer Pregnancy and Calving Ease. Additionally, with all remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid, Marbling, Yield Grade and growth EPDs also impact the HerdBuilder Index.
Use the GRIDMASTER INDEX if your operation’s primary goal is maximizing profitability of feeders in the feedyard and on the rail. The GridMaster Index is built using the following scenario:
• Red Angus bulls mated to cows
• All progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid
Marbling, Yield Grade and growth EPDs are the traits of primary importance in the GridMaster Index.
The Profitability and Sustainability index, or ProS, is an all-purpose index that covers economically relevant traits across all aspects of the beef supply chain from conception to carcass. ProS works as a combination of the already existing HerdBuilder and GridMaster indexes, which include traits from conception to weaning, and postweaning through harvest, respectively. The ProS index is expressed in dollars per head born.
